Air-Stable Polyphosphazene-Functionalized Few-Layer Black Phosphorene for Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resins

Synchronous modification of ZIF-67 with cyclomatrix polyphosphazene coating for efficient flame retardancy and mechanical reinforcement of epoxy resin

Cyclomatrix polyphosphazenes have attracted widespread attention in the field of polymer flame retardancy. Nevertheless, the optimal manifestation of their distinctive structural attributes and flame-retardant properties necessitates a judicious selection of condensation monomers and synergistic templates during the fabrication of polyphosphazene flame retardants. In our previous studies, it was discovered that when ZIF-67 is functionalized with polyphosphazene, the by-product HCl from phosphazene polycondensation causes etching on ZIF-67. Based on this "synchronous etching" effect, a series of hybrid materials comprising cyclomatrix polyphosphazene and ZIF-67, denoted as ZIF-67@PDS (PDS, poly-(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone)), ZIF-67@PBS (PBS, poly-(cyclotriphosphazene-co-Bisphenol A)), and ZIF-67@PZS (PZS, poly-(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol)), was synthesized utilizing DDS (4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone), BPA (Bisphenol A), and BPS (4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol) monomers as precursors, respectively. Upon the incorporation of 2.0 wt.% of ZIF-67@PDS, ZIF-67@PBS, and ZIF-67@PZS, the flame retardant and mechanical characteristics of EP composites exhibited marked enhancement. The unique structural characteristics of hybrid and the synergistic effects of Co-P-N contribute to the improvement of comprehensive properties. Compared with pure EP, EP/ZIF-67@PZS has the best enhancement effect, and its pHRR, THR, and TSP decreased by 34.0%, 30.0%, and 40.5%, respectively. In terms of mechanical strength, ZIF-67@PZS also increases the flexural strength of EP by 37.42%. Relying on the "synchronous etching" effect, this study explores and verifies the effective combination of ZIF-67 and different types of polyphosphazenes, and obtains a series of ZIF-67-derived cyclomatrix polyphosphazene hybrids with different morphologies and properties in one step. It provides a new idea and strategy for the simultaneous modification of polyphosphazene materials and the preparation of multifunctional flame retardants in the future.

Research Progress on the Preparation Methods for and Flame Retardant Mechanism of Black Phosphorus and Black Phosphorus Nanosheets

Black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets are widely used in the flame retardant field because of their excellent properties, but the immature preparation methods have resulted in extremely high preparation cost, which greatly limits their development and application. In this paper, various preparation methods of black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets are described in detail, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed in depth, the flame-retardant mechanism and application of black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets in flame retardants are discussed, and the subsequent development direction of black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets is proposed.

Accelerating the environmental applications of black phosphorus: A review

Since its rediscovery in 2014, layered black phosphorus (BP) has received extensive attention as a new two-dimensional semiconductor. BP is a promising material with properties of a large surface-to-volume ratio, wide light absorption range, tunable band gap, and high charge carrier mobility. These unique characteristics of BP make it a promising contender for various applications, particularly in the realm of environmental applications. This literature review provides a comprehensive discussion and overview of the latest developments in utilizing BP for environmental purposes. The review starts with the applications of BP in photocatalysis including photodegradation of refractory pollutants, H2 evolution reaction (HER), and reduction of CO2 and N2. In the following section, Environmental electrocatalysis of HER and N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is discussed. In addition, BP-based environmental sensing (detection of heavy metal ions, antibiotics, mycotoxins, NOx) and eco-friendly halogen-free flame retardant are summarized as well. Finally, a thorough comprehension of the current state and potential future trends of BP-based nanomaterials for various environmental applications are presented.

Synthesis and up-to-date applications of 2D microporous g-C3N4 nanomaterials for sustainable development

In recent years, with the development of industrial technology and the increase of people's environmental awareness, the research on sustainable materials and their applications has become a hot topic. Among two-dimensional (2D) materials that have been selected for sustainable research, graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has become a hot research topic because of its many outstanding advantages such as simple preparation, good electrochemical properties, excellent photochemical properties, and better thermal stability. Nevertheless, the inherent limitations of g-C3N4 due to its relatively poor specific surface area, rapid charge recombination, limited light absorption range, and inferior dispersion in aqueous and organic media have limited its practical application. In the review, we summarize and analyze the unique structure of the 2D microporous nanomaterial g-C3N4, its synthesis method, chemical modification method, and the latest application examples in various fields in recent years, highlighting its advantages and shortcomings, with a view to providing ideas for overcoming the difficulties in its application. Furthermore, the pressing challenges faced by g-C3N4 are briefly discussed, as well as an outlook on the application prospects of g-C3N4 materials. It is expected that the review in this paper will provide more theoretical strategies for the future practical application of g-C3N4-based materials, as well as contributing to nanomaterials in sustainable applications.

A Superior Two-Dimensional Phosphorus Flame Retardant: Few-Layer Black Phosphorus

The usage of flame retardants in flammable polymers has been an effective way to protect both lives and material goods from accidental fires. Phosphorus flame retardants have the potential to be follow-on flame retardants after halogenated variants, because of their low toxicity, high efficiency and compatibility. Recently, the emerging allotrope of phosphorus, two-dimensional black phosphorus, as a flame retardant has been developed. To further understand its performance in flame-retardant efficiency among phosphorus flame retardants, in this work, we built model materials to compare the flame-retardant performances of few-layer black phosphorus, red phosphorus nanoparticles, and triphenyl phosphate as flame-retardant additives in cellulose and polyacrylonitrile. Aside from the superior flame retardancy in polyacrylonitrile, few-layer black phosphorus in cellulose showed the superior flame-retardant efficiency in self-extinguishing, ~1.8 and ~4.4 times that of red phosphorus nanoparticles and triphenyl phosphate with similar lateral size and mass load (2.5~4.8 wt%), respectively. The char layer in cellulose coated with the few-layer black phosphorus after combustion was more continuous and smoother than that with red phosphorus nanoparticles, triphenyl phosphate and blank, and the amount of residues of cellulose coated with the few-layer black phosphorus in thermogravimetric analysis were 10 wt%, 14 wt% and 14 wt% more than that with red phosphorus nanoparticles, triphenyl phosphate and blank, respectively. In addition, although exothermic reactions, the combustion enthalpy changes in the few-layer black phosphorus (-127.1 kJ mol^-1) are one third of that of red phosphorus nanoparticles (-381.3 kJ mol^-1). Based on a joint thermodynamic, spectroscopic, and microscopic analysis, the superior flame retardancy of the few-layer black phosphorus was attributed to superior combustion reaction suppression from the two-dimensional structure and thermal nature of the few-layer black phosphorus.

Black phosphorus quantum dots induce autophagy and apoptosis of human bronchial epithelial cells via endoplasmic reticulum stress

PURPOSE

The board application of black phosphorus quantum dots (BP-QDs) increases the risk of inhalation exposure in the manufacturing process. The aim of this study is to explore the toxic effect of BP-QDs on human bronchial epithelial cells (Beas-2B) and lung tissue of Balb/c mice.

METHODS

The BP-QDs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a Malvern laser particle size analyzer. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and TEM were used to detect cytotoxicity and organelle injury. Damage to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) was detected by using the ER-Tracker molecular probe. Rates of apoptosis were detected by AnnexinV/PI staining. Phagocytic acid vesicles were detected using AO staining. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry were used to examine the molecular mechanisms.

RESULTS

After treatment with different concentrations of BP-QDs for 24 h, the cell viability decreased, as well as activation of the ER stress and autophagy. Furthermore, the rate of apoptosis was increased. Inhibition of ER stress caused by 4-phenyl butyric acid (4-PBA) was shown to significantly inhibit both apoptosis and autophagy, suggesting that ER stress could be an upstream mediator of both autophagy and apoptosis. BP-QD-induced autophagy can also inhibit the occurrence of apoptosis using molecules related to autophagy including rapamycin (Rapa), 3-methyladenine (3-MA), and bafilomycin A1 (Bafi A1). In general, BP-QDs activate ER stress in Beas-2B cells, which further induces autophagy and apoptosis, and autophagy may be activated as a factor that protects against apoptosis. We also observed strong staining of related proteins of ER stress, autophagy, and apoptosis proteins in mouse lung tissue following intracheal instillation over the course of a week.

CONCLUSION

BP-QD-induced ER stress facilitates autophagy and apoptosis in Beas-2B cells and autophagy may be activated as a protective factor against apoptosis. Under conditions of ER stress induced by BP-QDs, The interplay between autophagy and apoptosis determines cell fate.

LDH@Boronate Polymer Core-Shell Nanoparticles: Nanostructure Design for Synergistically Enhancing the Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resin

As a promising nanofiller, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can advance the fire safety of epoxy resin (EP), but so far, due to the problems of dispersion and low efficiency, it has still been a challenge to incorporate the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EP nanocomposites effectively under the circumstance of a low additive amount. In this work, we take LDHs as the template, via the adsorption of a catechol group and the condensation polymerization between catechol groups and phenylboric acid groups, to prepare a core-shell structured nanoparticle LDH@BP, which contains rich flame-retardant elements. EP/LDH@BP nanocomposites were prepared by introducing LDH@BP into EP. The experimental results indicate that, compared with the original LDH, LDH@BP disperses uniformly in the EP matrix, and the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EP/LDH@BP are significantly improved. At a relatively low content (5 wt%), EP/LDH@BP reached the rating of V-0 in the UL-94 test, LOI was increased to 29.1%, and peak heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 35.9% in cone calorimeter tests, which effectively inhibited the release of heat and toxic smoke during the combustion process of EP. Simultaneously, the mechanical properties of EP/LDH@BP have been improved satisfactorily. The above results derive from the reasonable architectural design of organic-inorganic nano-hybrid flame retardants and provide a novel method for the construction of efficient and balanced EP nanocomposite system with LDHs.

Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resins Modified with Few-Layer Black Phosphorus

Few-layer black phosphorus (BP)- and red phosphorus (RP)-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A-based epoxy resins (EP) was prepared with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone as a curing agent. The thermal stability and flame-retardant properties of the modified EPs were compared. Both BP and RP were able to improve the flame-retardant properties of EPs, while the BP showed higher flame-retardant efficiency than RP. As a two-dimensional nanomaterial, BP exhibited good compatibility, high flame-retardant efficiency, and negligible impact on the mechanical and thermal stability of EP. Pyrolysis-gas Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis of EP showed that the addition of BP significantly inhibited the release of pyrolysis products in the gas phase. The modes of action for flame-retardant BPs in gas phase and condensed phase were proposed.

Separator with Nitrogen-Phosphorus Flame-Retardant for LiNix Coy Mn1- x - y O2 Cathode-Based Lithium-Ion Batteries

With the pursuit of high-energy-density for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the hidden safety problems of batteries have gradually emerged. LiNi_x Co_y Mn_{1- x - y} O₂ (NCM) is considered as an ideal cathode material to meet the urgent needs of high-energy-density batteries. However, the oxygen precipitation reaction of NCM cathode at high temperature brings serious safety concerns. In order to promote high-safety lithium-ion batteries, herein, a new type of flame-retardant separator is prepared using flame-retardant (melamine pyrophosphate, MPP) and thermal stable Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). MPP takes the advantage of nitrogen-phosphorus synergistic effect upon the increased internal temperature of LIBs, including the dilution effect of noncombustible gas and the rapidly suppression of undesirable thermal runaway. The developed flame-retardant separators show negligible shrinkage over 200 °C and it takes only 0.54 s to extinguish the flame in the ignition test, which are much superior to commercial polyolefin separators. Moreover, pouch cells are assembled to demonstrate the application potential of PVDF-HFP/MPP separators and further verify the safety performance. It is anticipated that the separator with nitrogen-phosphorus flame-retardant can be extensively applied to various high-energy-density devices owing to simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

Towards the Future of Polymeric Hybrids of Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus or Phosphorene: From Energy to Biological Applications

With the advent of a new 2D nanomaterial, namely, black phosphorus (BP) or phosphorene, the scientific community is now dedicated to focusing on and exploring this 2D material offering elusive properties such as a higher carrier mobility, biocompatibility, thickness-dependent band gap, and optoelectronic characteristics that can be harnessed for multiple applications, e.g., nanofillers, energy storage devices, field effect transistors, in water disinfection, and in biomedical sciences. The hexagonal ring of phosphorus atoms in phosphorene is twisted slightly, unlike how it is in graphene. Its unique characteristics, such as a high carrier mobility, anisotropic nature, and biocompatibility, have attracted much attention and generated further scientific curiosity. However, despite these interesting features, the phosphorene or BP poses challenges and causes frustrations when it comes to its stability under ambient conditions and processability, and thus in order to overcome these hurdles, it must be conjugated or linked with the suitable and functional organic counter macromolecule in such a way that its properties are not compromised while providing a protection from air/water that can otherwise degrade it to oxides and acid. The resulting composites/hybrid system of phosphorene and a macromolecule, e.g., a polymer, can outperform and be exploited for the aforementioned applications. These assemblies of a polymer and phosphorene have the potential for shifting the paradigm from exhaustively used graphene to new commercialized products offering multiple applications.

A rational design of functionalized black phosphorus cooperates with piperazine pyrophosphate to significantly suppress the fire hazards of polypropylene

The flammability of polypropylene (PP) not only has negative effects on human health but also causes environmental pollution. Herein, from the molecular polarity point of view, rationally designed hyperbranched charring foaming agents (HCFA) modified black phosphorus nanosheets by in situ polymerization to solve the fire hazards of PP. Based on the UL-94 test V-0 rating, the conventional flame retardant of piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP) is substituted partly by the BP@PPC. Surprisingly, compared with 27 wt% of PAPP/PP, composites consisting of only 2 wt% of BP@PPC and 20 wt% PAPP/PP also passes the V-0 rating. The results of the cone calorimeter test confirmed that adding BP@PPC decreases the total heat release (THR) and peak heat release (PHRR) by a large amount, which are decreased by 23.4%, 85.8% respectively compared with PP. Moreover, it is uncommon for the fire growth index of BP@PPC composites to be 66.7% lower than that of PAPP/PP composites. In addition, the incorporation of BP@PPC has almost no impact on the mechanical characteristics of PP composites. This study offers a reference for combining established flame retardants with novel compounds to modify the burning behaviors of PP.

ROS Generative Black Phosphorus-Tamoxifen Nanosheets for Targeted Endocrine-Sonodynamic Synergistic Breast Cancer Therapy

Introduction

Tamoxifen (TAM) has proven to be a therapeutic breakthrough to reduce mortality and recurrence in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer patients. However, the application of TAM exhibits low bioavailability, off-target toxicity, instinct and acquired TAM resistance.

Methods

We utilized black phosphorus (BP) as a drug carrier and sonosensitizer, integrated with TAM and tumor-targeting ligand folic acid (FA) to construct TAM@BP-FA for synergistic endocrine and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) of breast cancer. The exfoliated BP nanosheets were modified through in situ polymerization of dopamine, followed by electrostatic adsorption of TAM and FA. The anticancer effect of TAM@BP-FA was evaluated through in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo antitumor model. RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot analysis, flow cytometry analysis and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) analysis were performed for mechanism investigation.

Results

TAM@BP-FA had satisfactory drug loading capacity, the TAM release behavior can be controlled through pH microenvironment and ultrasonic stimulation. An amount of hydroxyl radical (∙OH) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) were as expected generated under ultrasound stimulation. TAM@BP-FA nanoplatform showed excellent internalization in both TAM-sensitive MCF7 and TAM-resistant (TMR) cells. Using TMR cells, TAM@BP-FA displayed significantly enhanced antitumor ability in comparison with TAM (7.7% vs 69.6% viability at 5μg/mL), the additional SDT further caused 15% more cell death. RNA-seq unraveled the TAM@BP-FA antitumor mechanisms including effects on cell cycle, apoptosis and cell proliferation. Further analysis showed additional SDT successfully triggering reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) reduction. Moreover, PBMCs exposed to TAM@BP-FA induced an antitumor immune response by natural killer (NK) cell upregulation and immunosuppression macrophage reduction.

Conclusion

The novel BP-based strategy not only delivers TAM specifically to tumor cells but also exhibits satisfactory antitumor effects through targeted therapy, SDT, and immune cell modulation. The nanoplatform may provide a superior synergistic strategy for breast cancer therapy.

Long-Term Antifogging Coating Based on Black Phosphorus Hybrid Super-Hydrophilic Polymer Hetero-Network

The antifogging coating based on super-hydrophilic polymer is regarded as the most promising strategy to avoid fogging but suffers from short-term effectiveness due to antifogging failure induced by water invasion. In this study, a black phosphorus nanosheets (BPs) hybrid polymer hetero-network coating (PUA/PAHS/BPs HN) was prepared by UV curing for the first time to achieve long-term antifogging performance. The polymer hetero-network (HN) structure was composed of two novel cross-linked acrylic resin and polyurethane acrylate. Different from physical blending, a covalent P-C bond between BPs and polymer is generated by UV initiated free radical reaction, resulting in BPs firmly embedded in the polymer HN structure. The BPs enriched on the coating surface by UV regulating migration prevent permeation of water towards the inside of the coating through its own good water-based lubricity and water absorption capacity. Compared with the nonhybrid polymer HN, PUA/PAHS/BPs HN not only has higher hardness and better friction resistance properties, but also exhibits superior water resistance and longer antifogging duration. Since water invasion was greatly reduced by BPs, the PUA/PAHS/BPs HN coating maintained antifogging duration for 60 min under a 60 °C water vapor test and still maintained long-term antifogging performance after being immersed in water for 5 days.

Preparation, Properties, and Mechanism of Flame-Retardant Poly(vinyl alcohol) Aerogels Based on the Multi-Directional Freezing Method

In this work, exfoliated α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) and phosphated cellulose (PCF) were employed to synthesize poly(vinyl alcohol) composite aerogels (PVA/PCF/α-ZrP) with excellent flame retardancy through the multi-directional freezing method. The peak heat release rate (PHRR), total smoke release (TSR), and CO production (COP) of the (PVA/PCF₁₀/α-ZrP₁₀-3) composite aerogel were considerably decreased by 42.3%, 41.4%, and 34.7%, as compared to the pure PVA aerogel, respectively. Simultaneously, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value was improved from 18.1% to 28.4%. The mechanistic study of flame retardancy showed evidence that PCF and α-ZrP promoted the crosslinking and carbonization of PVA chains to form a barrier, which not only served as insulation between the material and the air, but also significantly reduced the emissions of combustible toxic gases (CO₂, CO). In addition, the multi-directional freezing method further improved the catalytic carbonization process. This mutually advantageous strategy offers a new strategy for the preparation of composite aerogels with enhanced fire resistance.

Deciphering the Effects of 2D Black Phosphorus on Disrupted Hematopoiesis and Pulmonary Immune Homeostasis Using a Developed Flow Cytometry Method

As an emerging two-dimensional nanomaterial with promising prospects, mono- or few-layer black phosphorus (BP) is potentially toxic to humans. We investigated the effects of two types of BPs on adult male mice through intratracheal instillation. Using the flow cytometry method, the generation, migration, and recruitment of immune cells in different organs have been characterized on days 1, 7, 14, and 21 post-exposure. Compared with small BP (S-BP, lateral size at ∼188 nm), large BP (L-BP, lateral size at ∼326 nm) induced a stronger stress lymphopoiesis and B cell infiltration into the alveolar sac. More importantly, L-BP dramatically increased peripheral neutrophil (NE) counts up to 1.9-fold on day 21 post-exposure. Decreased expression of the CXCR4 on NEs, an important regulator of NE retention in the bone marrow, explained the increased NE release into the circulation induced by L-BP. Therefore, BP triggers systemic inflammation via the disruption of both the generation and migration of inflammatory immune cells.

Nanohybrid of Co3O4 Nanoparticles and Polyphosphazene-Decorated Ultra-Thin Boron Nitride Nanosheets for Simultaneous Enhancement in Fire Safety and Smoke Suppression of Thermoplastic Polyurethane

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is widely used in daily life due to its characteristics of light weight, high impact strength, and compression resistance. However, TPU products are extremely flammable and will generate toxic fumes under fire attack, threatening human life and safety. In this article, a nanohybrid flame retardant was designed for the fire safety of TPU. Herein, Co₃O₄ was anchored on the surface of exfoliated ultra-thin boron nitride nanosheets (BNNO@Co₃O₄) via coprecipitation and subsequent calcination. Then, a polyphosphazene (PPZ) layer was coated onto BNNO@Co₃O₄ by high temperature polymerization to generate a nanohybrid flame retardant named BNNO@Co₃O₄@PPZ. The cone calorimeter results exhibited that the heat release and smoke production during TPU combustion were remarkably restrained after the incorporation of the nanohybrid flame retardant. Compared with pure TPU, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) decreased by 44.1%, the peak smoke production rate (PSPR) decreased by 51.2%, and the peak CO production rate (PCOPR) decreased by 72.5%. Based on the analysis of carbon residues after combustion, the significant improvement in fire resistance of TPU by BNNO@Co3O4@PPZ was attributed to the combination of quenching effect, catalytic carbonization effect, and barrier effect. In addition, the intrinsic mechanical properties of TPU were well maintained due to the existence of the PPZ organic layer.

Covalent grafting diazotized black phosphorus with ferrocene oligomer towards smoke suppression and toxicity reduction

In comparison with the thermal hazard of polymers, noxious smoke and gas produced by the combustion of polymers make the environment self-purification a huge challenge. As a new type of a highly effective flame retardant, black phosphorus (BP) can effectively decrease the thermal hazard of polymers, but its performances in smoke suppression and toxicity reduction are unsatisfactory. In this article, a method of covalently grafting diazotized BP with a ferrocene oligomer was applied to promote the smoke suppression and toxicity reduction efficiency of BP. In our work, the BP-NH nanomaterials with a mass of amino groups on the surface were acquired by diazotizing the BP. Then, the BP-Fe was obtained by covalently grafting the ferrocene chloride salt and nitrogen-containing heterocycles on the surface of BP. The smoke production rate (SPR) and total smoke production (TSP) values of the epoxy resin (EP) decreased by 49.8% and 52.5% with the addition of 2 wt% BP-Fe, respectively. In comparison with previous studies, this work was far more effective than the previous work in smoke suppression and flame retardant. The release of toxic gases (CO and HCN) and volatile organic compounds in the EP was also effectively inhibited at the same time. In addition, the storage modulus and tensile strength of nanocomposites increased by 35.1% and 27.2% with the addition of 1 wt% BP-Fe. This work also provides a new idea on how to simultaneously strengthen the toxic smoke suppression, mechanical properties, and flame retardant of polymer materials.

Fabrication and evaluation of bone morphogenetic protein-2 microspheres coated black phosphorus nanosheets@polylactic-glycolic acid copolymers scaffold: A multifunctional antibacterial photothermal scaffold for bone regeneration

Clinical bone defects are often caused by high energy injury and are easily complicated by bacterial infection. An ideal bone repair material should promote bone regeneration and prevent bacterial infection. In this study, a multifunctional photothermal scaffold was developed: bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)/polylactic-glycolic acid copolymers (PLGA) microspheres were prepared by a double emulsion method and then coated on the scaffolds prepared using a mixture of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPs) and PLGA, to form BMP-2@BPs scaffolds. The structural and photothermal properties of the composite scaffolds were characterized. The BMP-2@BPs scaffolds demonstrated good biocompatibility in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. The BMP-2@BPs scaffolds promoted osteogenic differentiation through a combination of BMP-2 release and upregulation of the expression of heat shock proteins by the radiation of near-infrared (NIR) light, which further upregulated the expression of osteogenesis-related genes. In addition, BPs demonstrated antibacterial effects under the mediation of NIR, which is beneficial for the prevention of clinical bacterial infections. In summary, the BMP-2@BPs scaffold was a multifunctional photothermal scaffold that could accelerate bone regeneration and act against bacteria. This study provides a new perspective for the treatment of bone defects and infectious bone defects.

Oxygen-deficient titanium dioxide-loaded black phosphorus nanosheets for synergistic photothermal and sonodynamic cancer therapy

Malignant tumors, particularly those located in deep tissues, have always been a grievous threat to human health. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has recently attracted great attention due to deep tissue penetration. However, the lack of effective sonosensitizers and the poor therapeutic efficacy severely limit their wider use. Herein, dual-functionalized black phosphorus nanosheets (BP@PEI-PEG, i.e., PPBP) integrating black oxygen-deficient titanium dioxide particles (B-TiO₂) were successfully constructed (PPBP-B-TiO₂) for synergistic photothermal (PTT)/sonodynamic therapy. In these nanocomposites, black titanium dioxide can enhance the separation of electrons (e^-) and holes (h⁺) due to the oxygen-deficient structure and significantly improves the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for SDT, while the BP nanosheets endow the nanocomposites with a higher photothermal conversion capability for photothermal therapy (η = 44.1%) which can prolong the blood circulation and improve the O₂ supply. In vivo experiments prove that PPBP-B-TiO₂ nanocomposites exhibited outstanding tumor inhibition efficacy and excellent biocompatibility. This work provides a prospective platform for combined photothermal/sonodynamic cancer therapy.

A novel flame retardant consisting of functionalized Salen-Ni based polyphosphazene microspheres

A functionalized cross-linked polyphosphazenes microsphere (Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS) was prepared by wrapping Salen-Ni basis polyphosphazenes (Salen-PZN-Ni) with a kind of hybrid flame retardant (DHPP-PTS) to improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of epoxy (EP) composites. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS greatly improved the thermal stability of the EP composites. The addition of 5 wt% Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS remarkably improved the fire safety of EP, which was illustrated by the results of the cone calorimeter. For example, the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate of the EP composites were reduced by 44.2% and 33.1%, respectively. The limiting oxygen index value of 5% Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS/EP composite reached 29.8% and UL-94 achieved V-1 rating. In addition, the introduction of Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS effectively suppressed the production of toxic CO and other volatiles. Meantime, the synergistic effect between Salen-PZN-Ni and DHPP-PTS was found. The potential flame retardant mechanism of Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS is regarded as the synergistic catalytic carbonization effect and the extremely thermally stable components forming. Enhanced fire safety of EP composites by synergistic interaction of various components (nickel and DHPP-PTS) with polyphosphazenes microspheres.

Size-dependent flame retardancy of black phosphorus nanosheets

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets are potential flame-retardant nano-additives. Herein, the effects of the size of BP nanosheets embedded in epoxy resin (EP) on flame retardancy are studied. BP nanosheets with four different sizes are synthesized from bulk BP by different exfoliation methods including solid ball milling, liquid ball milling, ultrasonic liquid exfoliation, and electrochemical exfoliation (samples are designated as sb-BP, lb-BP, us-BP, and ec-BP, respectively). lb-BP exhibits the best dispersion in the EP matrix, and the lb-BP/EP composite shows the best flame-retardancy properties among the four BP/EP composites. Compared to bare EP, lb-BP/EP shows obvious improvements including the reduction in the heat release peak rate by 34.4%, total heat release by 27.0%, peak of smoke production rate by 69.2%, and total production of carbon monoxide by 50.8%. The mechanistic study reveals that lb-BP serves as a barrier and carbonization catalyst to delay combustion. These results confirm the size dependence of flame-retardancy properties of BP nanosheets and the new knowledge provides insights into the size dependent effects of other two-dimensional materials.

Fabrication of thermoplastic polyurethane with functionalized MXene towards high mechanical strength, flame-retardant, and smoke suppression properties

Recently, two-dimensional MXene demonstrated promising advantages to improve the flame-retardant performance of composites; however, its compatibility with polymer matrix is a great concern. In this study, MXene was first functionalized with phosphorylated chitosan (PCS) to obtain the PCS-MXene nanohybrid. The resulting nanohybrid was introduced into the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix via solution mixing followed by the hot-pressing method, affording TPU/PCS-MXene nanocomposite. The resulting nanohybrid exhibited superior compatibility with the TPU matrix, enhancing mechanical performance of the TPU/PCS-MXene nanocomposite compared to the pristine TPU and TPU/MXene nanocomposite. Besides, the flame-retardant performance of TPU/PCS-MXene nanocomposite was greatly enhanced, while the smoke emission was effectively suppressed. As only 3 wt% PCS-MXene was introduced, peak heat release rate, total heat release, and total smoke production of the composite decreased by 66.7%, 21.0%, and 27.7%, respectively, compared to the pristine TPU. Systematical characterization was then carried out to investigate the enhancement mechanism of PCS-MXene, highlighting the crucial role of PCS combined with the catalytic effect of MXene. In brief, the compatibility issues of MXene were effectively addressed, and its flame-retardancy enhanced greatly via the PCS modification, the bio-based characteristic of which, in turn greatly benefits the further development of MXene-polymer composite.

Hindered phenolic antioxidant passivation of black phosphorus affords air stability and free radical quenching

As an antioxidant, hindered phenol scavenges free radicals. Due to the oxidative degradation of black phosphorus (BP) in the presence of water and oxygen, free radical quenching of hindered phenol antioxidants can solve this issue and improve the environmental stability and flame retardant efficiency of BP. Herein, hydroxyl-modified BP (BP-OH) with active groups on the surface was obtained by hydroxylation, and then the hindered phenol antioxidant was grafted onto the surface of BP-OH through an isophorone diisocyanate bridging covalent reaction to obtain hindered phenol-modified BP (BP-HPL). The fire hazard of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) can be significantly reduced by introducing BP-HPL into TPU. Adding 2 wt% BP-HPL can reduce the heat release rate and total heat release values of TPU by 49.9% and 49.0%, respectively. In addition, the reductions in smoke volume and carbon monoxide production were also significant. Compared with BP-OH, the environmental stability of BP-HPL is significantly improved. This work provides a reference for the application of BP in the field of fire safety and simultaneously achieves the improvement of the environmental stability and flame retardant performance of BP.

ICG-Loaded PEG-Modified Black Phosphorus Nanosheets for Fluorescence Imaging-Guided Breast Cancer Therapy

Indocyanine green (ICG) has been used in various surgical navigation systems and plays an important role in intraoperative imaging diagnosis. However, the poor photostability and unsatisfactory tumor-targeting ability have limited its broad application prospects. In the decades, the construction of a nanodrug delivery system for tumor-targeting diagnosis and therapy has become a research hotspot. Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS), as a new kind of biodegradable nanomaterials, have the advantages of high loading capacity, good biocompatibility, tumor targeting, and photothermal effect over other two-dimensional (2D) reported nanomaterials. Herein, ICG-loaded poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-modified BPNS (ICG@BPNS-PEG) nanocomposites are constructed to improve the tumor-targeting capacity and guide photothermal therapy through real-time fluorescence imaging. In this study, ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites with a suitable size (240 ± 28 nm) have been successfully constructed. The photostability of ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites surpassed that of free ICG after four on-off cycles of near laser irradiation (NIR). Moreover, ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites have enhanced photothermal conversion ability. The cellular uptake result through flow cytometry showed that ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites could be swallowed easily owing to the suitable size and passive cellular uptake. In addition, the cytotoxicity evaluation of MCF-7, 4T1 breast cancer cells, and healthy RPE cells through the MTT assay demonstrated that ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites have lower cytotoxicity and good cellular compatibility without irradiation. However, the cytotoxicity and live/dead staining proved that ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites have satisfactory photothermal therapeutic effects when irradiated. In the 4T1-bearing mice model, the fluorescence imaging after intravenous injection of nanocomposites showed that ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites have superior passive tumor targeting accumulation through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect compared with that of free ICG. Also, changes in tumor volume showed a remarkable tumor growth inhibition effect compared with other groups. Moreover, the results of hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining of major organs in 4T1-bearing mice also demonstrated that the nanocomposites have good biocompatibility. Therefore, the constructed ICG@BPNS-PEG nanocomposites have substantial potential in breast cancer therapy.

Biodegradable L-lysine-modified amino black phosphorus/poly(l-lactide-coε-caprolactone) nanofibers with enhancements in hydrophilicity, shape recovery and osteodifferentiation properties

Biodegradable poly-(lactide-coε-caprolactone) (PLCL) scaffolds have opened new perspectives for tissue engineering due to their nontoxic and fascinating functionality. Herein, a black phosphorus-based biodegradable material with a combination of promising enhanced hydrophilicity, shape recovery and osteodifferentiation properties was proposed. First, amino black phosphorous (BP-NH₂) was prepared by a simple ball milling method. Then, L-lysine-modified black phosphorous (L-NH-BP) was formed by hydrogen bonding between L-lysine and amino BP and integrated into PLCL to form PLCL/L-NH-BP composite fibers. The scaffolds had excellent shape recovery and shape fixity properties. Moreover, based on gene expression and protein level assessment, the scaffolds could enhance the expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2), simultaneously improving the mineralization ability of bone mesenchymal stem cells. Specifically, this new composite material was experimentally verified to be degradable under mild conditions. This strategy provided new insight into the design of multifunctional materials for diverse applications.

Peanut Shell Derived Carbon Combined with Nano Cobalt: An Effective Flame Retardant for Epoxy Resin

Biomass-derived carbon has been recognised as a green, economic and promising flame retardant (FR) for polymer matrix. In this paper, it is considered that the two-dimensional (2D) structure of carbonised peanut shells (PS) can lead to a physical barrier effect on polymers. The carbonised sample was prepared by the three facile methods, and firstly adopted as flame retardants for epoxy resin. The results of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter tests indicate that the carbon combined with nano Cobalt provides the most outstanding thermal stability in the current study. With 3 wt.% addition of the FR, both peak heat release rate (pHRR) and peak smoke production rate (PSPR) decrease by 37.9% and 33.3%, correspondingly. The flame retardancy mechanisms of the FR are further explored by XPS and TG-FTIR. The effectiveness of carbonised PS can be mainly attributed to the physical barrier effect derived by PS's 2D structure and the catalysis effect from Cobalt, which contribute to form a dense char layer.

Surface Functionalization of Black Phosphorus via Amine Compounds and Its Impacts on the Flame Retardancy and Thermal Decomposition Behaviors of Epoxy Resin

Recently, lots of effort has been placed into stabilizing black phosphorus (BP) in the air to improve its compatibility with polymers. Herein, BP was chemically functionalized by aliphatic amine (DETA), aromatic amine (PPDA) and cyclamine (Pid) via a nucleophilic substitution reaction, aiming to develop an intensively reactive BP flame retardant for epoxy resin (EP). The -NH₂ group on BP-DETA, BP-PPDA and BP-Pid reacted with the epoxide group at different temperatures. The lowest temperature was about 150 °C for BP-DETA. The impacts of three BP-NH₂ were compared on the flame retardancy and thermal decomposition of EP. At 5 wt% loading, EP/BP-NH₂ all passed UL 94 V 0 rating. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of EP/BP-PPDA was as high as 32.3%. The heat release rate (HRR) of EP/BP-DETA greatly decreased by 46% and char residue increased by 73.8%, whereas HRR of EP/BP-Pid decreased by 11.5% and char residue increased by 50.8%, compared with EP. Average effective heat of combustion (av-EHC) of EP/BP-Pid was lower than that of EP/BP-DETA and EP/BP-PPDA. In view of the flame-retardant mechanism, BP nanosheets functionalized with aliphatic amine and aromatic amine played a dominant role in the condensed phase, while BP functionalized with cyclamine was more effective in the gas phase.

Recyclable, Self-Healing, and Flame-Retardant Solid-Solid Phase Change Materials Based on Thermally Reversible Cross-Links for Sustainable Thermal Energy Storage

Conventional polymeric phase change materials (PCMs) exhibit good shape stability, large energy storage density, and satisfactory chemical stability, but they cannot be recycled and self-healed due to their permanent cross-linking structure. Additionally, the high flammability of organic PCMs seriously restricts their applications for thermal energy storage (TES). Therefore, it is urgently required to explore PCM composites exhibiting superior recyclability, good self-healing capability, and excellent flame retardancy simultaneously. Herein, tri-maleimide end-capped cyclotriphosphazene flame retardant (TMCTP) was synthesized via the nucleophilic substitution between 1,3,5,2,4,6-triazatriphosphorine-2,2,4,4,6,6-hexachloride and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)maleimide. Then, novel dynamically cross-linked PCM composites (FPCMs) with superior recyclability, good self-healing capability, and excellent flame retardancy were fabricated by bonding PEG and TMCTP to polymeric skeleton via reversible furan/maleimide Diels-Alder (DA) reaction. TMCTP, which covalently and dynamically binding in the polymeric FPCMs, acted not only as an efficient flame retardant for reducing the flammability of PCM composites but also as dynamic cross-linking skeletons for thermally induced self-healing and recycling. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis confirmed the reversible energy storage and release ability of FPCMs. Due to its reversible DA covalent bonds, the introduction of TMCTP endowed the FPCMs with considerably increased self-healing efficiency (up to 93.1%) and recyclability efficiency (94.6%). Moreover, with the introduction of TMCTP into FPCMs, the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) significantly decreased, while the char residue and limiting oxygen index (LOI) value increased, confirming that the flame retardancy of FPCMs greatly improved. Hence, the synthesized FPCMs show enormous potential in TES applications.

Black Phosphorus/Polymers: Status and Challenges

As a newly emerged mono-elemental nanomaterial, black phosphorus (BP) has been widely investigated for its fascinating physical properties, including layer-dependent tunable band gap (0.3-1.5 eV), high ON/OFF ratio (10⁴ ), high carrier mobility (10³ cm² V^-1 s^-1 ), excellent mechanical resistance, as well as special in-plane anisotropic optical, thermal, and vibrational characteristics. However, the instability caused by chemical degradation of its surface has posed a severe challenge for its further applications. A focused BP/polymer strategy has more recently been developed and implemented to hurdle this issue, so at present BP/polymers have been developed that exhibit enhanced stability, as well as outstanding optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. This has promoted researchers to further explore the potential applications of black phosphorous. In this review, the preparation processes and the key properties of BP/polymers are reviewed, followed by a detailed account of their diversified applications, including areas like optoelectronics, bio-medicine, and energy storage. Finally, in accordance with the current progress, the prospective challenges and future directions are highlighted and discussed.

Emerging two-dimensional monoelemental materials (Xenes): Fabrication, modification, and applications thereof in the field of bioimaging as nanocarriers

In recent years, more and more research enthusiasm has been devoted to the development of emerging two-dimensional (2D) monoelement materials (Xenes) and explored potential applications in various fields, especially biomedicine and bioimaging. The inspiring results attribute to their excellent physicochemical properties, including adjustable band gap, surface electronic layout characteristics, and so on, making it easier for surface modification in order to meet designated needs. As a popular interdisciplinary research frontier, a variety of methods for fabricating 2D Xenes have recently been adopted for pre-preparing future practical bioimaging applications, which implies that these materials will have broad clinical application prospects in the future. In this review, we will concentrate on the family of 2D Xenes and summarize their fabrication and modification methods firstly. Then, their applications in bioimaging as nanocarriers will be described according to the Periodic Table of Elements. In addition, current challenges and prospects for further clinical applications will be under discussion and use black phosphorus as a typical example. At last, general conclusion will be made that it is worth expecting that 2D Xenes will play a key role in the next generation of oncologic bioimaging in the future.
