Edge-oriented N-Doped WS2 Nanoparticles on Porous Co3 N Nanosheets for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution and Nitrogenous Nucleophile Electrooxidation

Coordinated d-p hybridized hcp@fcc NiRu alloy doped by interstitial atoms for boosting urea-assisted simulated seawater electrolysis at industrial current densities

The production of hydrogen through seawater electrolysis has recently garnered increasing concern. However, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by alkaline seawater electrocatalysis is severely impeded by the slow H2O adsorption and H* binding kinetics at industrial current densities. Herein, a face-centered cubic/hexagonal close packed (fcc/hcp) NiRu alloy heterojunction was fabricated on Ni foam (N doped NiRu-inf/NF) by a low-temperature nitrogen plasma activation. Simultaneously, nitrogen atoms are introduced into the alloy to facilitate d-p hybridization. When N doped NiRu-inf/NF is integrated into a dual-electrode cell for urea-assisted seawater electrolysis, it achieves 100 mA cm-2 with an ultra-low voltage of 1.36 V and excellent stability. Density functional theory (DFT) verifies that the robust d-p hybridization among Ni, Ru and N exhibits more energy level matching for H2O molecule adsorption at the Ru sites, while simultaneously reducing the interaction between H* and Ni sites in N-doped NiRu-inf.

Cobalt-Based Nanoscale Material: An Emerging Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Production

Modern civilization has been highly suffering from energy crisis and environmental pollutions. These two burning issues are directly and indirectly created from fossil fuel consumption and uncontrolled industrialization. The above critical issue can be solved through the proper utilization of green energy sources where no greenhouse gases will be generated upon burning of such materials. Hydrogen is the most eligible candidate for this purpose. Among various methods of hydrogen generation, electrocatalytic process is one of the most efficient methods because of easy handling and high efficiency. In these aspects Co-based nanomaterials are considered to be extremely significant as they can be utilized as efficient, recyclable and ideal catalytic system. In this article a series of Co-based nano-electrocatalysts has been discussed with proper structure-property relationship and their medium dependency. Therefore, such type of stimulating summary on recently reported electrocatalysts and their activity may be helpful for scientists of the corresponding field as well as for broader research communities. This can be inspiration for materials researchers to fabricate active catalysts for the production of hydrogen gas in room temperature.

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall and Hybrid Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable electricity has been recognized as a promising approach for green hydrogen production. Different from conventional strategies in developing electrocatalysts for the two half-reactions of water splitting (e.g., the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, HER and OER) separately, there has been a growing interest in designing and developing bifunctional electrocatalysts, which are able to catalyze both the HER and OER. In addition, considering the high overpotentials required for OER while limited value of the produced oxygen, there is another rapidly growing interest in exploring alternative oxidation reactions to replace OER for hybrid water splitting toward energy-efficient hydrogen generation. This Review begins with an introduction on the fundamental aspects of water splitting, followed by a thorough discussion on various physicochemical characterization techniques that are frequently employed in probing the active sites, with an emphasis on the reconstruction of bifunctional electrocatalysts during redox electrolysis. The design, synthesis, and performance of diverse bifunctional electrocatalysts based on noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal-free nanocarbons, for overall water splitting in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are thoroughly summarized and compared. Next, their application toward hybrid water splitting is also presented, wherein the alternative anodic reactions include sacrificing agents oxidation, pollutants oxidative degradation, and organics oxidative upgrading. Finally, a concise statement on the current challenges and future opportunities of bifunctional electrocatalysts for both overall and hybrid water splitting is presented in the hope of guiding future endeavors in the quest for energy-efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production.

Co─Mn Bimetallic Nanowires by Interfacial Modulation with/without Vacancy Filling as Active and Durable Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Active and stable nonnoble electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are required for water splitting by sustainable electricity. Here, Mn bonded with O and P is incorporated to modulate Co3S4 and Co2P respectively to enhance the catalytic activity and extend the catalyst lifetime. Mn3O4 adjusts the electronic structure of Co3S4 and Co atom fills the oxygen vacancy in Mn3O4. The interfacial interaction endows Co3S4/Mn3O4 to a lower reaction barrier due to ideal binding energies for OER intermediates. Structure stability of active sites and enhanced Co─S bonds by Operando Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reduce the dissolution of Co3S4/Mn3O4, resulting in a lifetime of 500 h at 50 mA cm-2 for OER. The modulation of Co2P by MnP weakens the interaction between Co sites and adsorbed H*, achieving a high activity under a large current for HER. The assembled electrolyzer affords 50 mA cm-2 at 1.58 V and exhibits a lifetime of 350 h at 50 mA cm-2. The calculations disclose the electron interaction for the activity and stability, as well as the enhanced conductivity. The findings develop new avenues toward promoting catalytic activity and stability, making Co─Mn bimetallic nanowires efficient electrocatalysts for nonnoble water electrolyzers.

Interfacial and Electronic Modulation of W Bridging Heterostructure Between WS2 and Cobalt-Based Compounds for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

The development of high performance electrocatalysts for effective hydrogen production is urgently needed. Herein, three hybrid catalysts formed by WS2 and Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives are constructed, in which the small amount of W in the MOFs derivatives acts as a bridge to provide the charge transfer channel and enhance the stability. In addition, the effects of the surface charge distribution on the catalytic performance are fully investigated. Due to the optimal interfacial electron coupling and rearrangement as well as its unique porous morphology, WS2 @W-CoPx exhibits superior bifunctional performance in alkaline media with low overpotentials in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (62 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (278 mV at 100 mA cm-2 ). For overall water splitting (OWS), WS2 @W-CoPx only requires a cell voltage of 1.78 V at 50 mA cm-2 and maintains good stability within 72 h. Density functional theory calculations verify that the combination of W-CoPx with WS2 can effectively enhance the activity of OER and HER with weakened OH (or O) adsorption and enhanced H atom adsorption. This work provides a feasible idea for the design and practical application of WS2 or phosphide-based catalysts in OWS.

Rapid construction of Co/CoO/CoCH nanowire core/shell arrays for highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

The Co/CoO/CoCH (P-CoCH) nanowire core/shell arrays were prepared by a one step hydrothermal method and rapid reduction of cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CoCH) in Ar/H2 plasma for the first time. The rapid reduction process endows the P-CoCH with a unique porous structure, larger electrochemical active surface area and abundant activity sites. Therefore, the as-prepared P-CoCH nanowire core/shell arrays show superior HER performance with a low overpotential of 69 mV and a small Tafel slope of 47 mV dec-1 at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In addition, the P-CoCH electrocatalyst demonstrates an excellent cycling stability without any obvious decay after 24 h continuous operation at 100 mA cm-2 current density. This study might provide a new insight into the rapidly construction of efficient HER Co-based electrocatalysts and beyond.

Modulation Strategies for the Preparation of High-Performance Catalysts for Urea Oxidation Reaction and Their Applications

Compared with the traditional electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen, urea-assisted electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen has significant advantages and has received extensive attention from researchers. Unfortunately, urea oxidation reaction (UOR) involves a complex six-electron transfer process leading to high overpotential, which forces researchers to develop high-performance UOR catalysts to drive the development of urea-assisted water splitting. Based on the UOR mechanism and extensive literature research, this review summarizes the strategies for preparing highly efficient UOR catalysts. First, the UOR mechanism is introduced and the characteristics of excellent UOR catalysts are pointed out. Aiming at this, the following modulation strategies are proposed to improve the catalytic performance based on summarizing various literature: 1) Accelerating the active phase formation to reduce initial potential; 2) Creating double active sites to trigger a new UOR mechanism; 3) Accelerating urea adsorption and promoting C─N bond cleavage to ensure the effective conduct of UOR; 4) Promoting the desorption of CO2 to improve stability and prevent catalyst poisoning; 5) Promoting electron transfer to overcome the inherent slow dynamics of UOR; 6) Increasing active sites or active surface area. Then, the application of UOR in electrochemical devices is summarized. Finally, the current deficiencies and future directions are discussed.

Rational Design of Molybdenum-Doped Cobalt Nitride Nanowire Arrays for Robust Overall Water Splitting

Rational design of efficient electrocatalysts is highly imperative but still a challenge for overall water splitting. Herein, we construct self-supported Co₃ N nanowire arrays with different Mo doping contents by hydrothermal and nitridation processes that serve as robust electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. The optimal Co₃ N-Mo_0.2 /Ni foam (NF) electrode delivers a low overpotential of 97 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 as well as a highly stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations prove that Mo doping can effectively modulate the electronic structure and surface adsorption energies of H₂ O and hydrogen intermediates on Co₃ N, leading to improved reaction kinetics with high catalytic activity. Further modification with FeOOH species on the surface of Co₃ N-Mo_0.2 /NF improves the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance benefiting from the synergistic effect of dual Co-Fe catalytic centers. As a result, the Co₃ N-Mo_0.2 @FeOOH/NF catalysts display outstanding OER catalytic performance with a low overpotential of 250 mV at 50 1 mA cm^-2 . The constructed Co₃ N-Mo_0.2 /NF||Co₃ N-Mo_0.2 @FeOOH/NF water electrolyzer exhibits a small voltage of 1.48 V to achieve a high current density of 50 mA cm^-2 at 80 °C, which is superior to most of the reported electrocatalysts. This work provides a new approach to developing robust electrode materials for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Phase Segregation in Cu0.5 Ni0.5 Alloy Boosting Urea-Assisted Hydrogen Production in Alkaline Media

Coupling urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is promising for energy-efficient hydrogen production. However, developing cheap and highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall urea electrolysis remains challenging. In this work, a metastable Cu_0.5 Ni_0.5 alloy is synthesized by a one-step electrodeposition method. It only requires the potentials of 1.33 and -28 mV to obtain the current density of ±10 mA cm^-2 for UOR and HER, respectively. The metastable alloy is considered to be the main reason causing the above excellent performances. In the alkaline medium, the as-prepared Cu_0.5 Ni_0.5 alloy exhibits good stability for HER; and conversely, NiOOH species can be rapidly formed during the UOR due to the phase segregation of Cu_0.5 Ni_0.5 alloy. In particular, for the energy-saving hydrogen generation system coupled with HER and UOR, only 1.38 V of voltage is needed at 10 mA cm^-2 ; and at 100 mA cm^-2 , the voltage decreases by ≈305 mV compared with that of the routine water electrolysis system (HER || OER). Compared with some catalysts reported recently, the Cu_0.5 Ni_0.5 catalyst owns superior electrocatalytic activity and durability. Furthermore, this work provides a simple, mild, and rapid method for designing highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts toward urea-supporting overall water splitting.
