On a new method to study drastic change in ecosystems

We describe a novel method to study drastic change in ecosystems, based on generic functions used in the study of phase transitions and related physical phenomena. We illustrate its use by applying it to the problem of shallow lake eutrophication, and express our results in terms of an interplay between phosphorus content in the water column and fluxes of this substance between the lake and both its biological community and its surroundings. We contrast our solution to this problem with a previous one based on the concept of resilience, and on bifurcation analysis of a dynamical equation that also involves phosphorus concentration and fluxes. We then suggest a generalized dynamical scheme incorporating the generic functions above, that reduces to our original method in the stationary condition, and allows in addition dealing with cyclic and chaotic regimes, as illustrated through a particular example.

Experimental allometry: effect of size manipulation on metabolic rate of colonial ascidians

The allometric scaling of metabolic rate of organisms, the three-quarters power rule, has led to a questioning of the basis for the relation. We attacked this problem experimentally for the first time by employing the modular organism, the ascidian that forms a single layered flat colony, as a model system. The metabolic rate and colony size followed the three-quarters power relation, which held even after the colony size was experimentally manipulated. Our results established that the three-quarters power relation is a real continuous function, not an imaginary statistical regression. The fact that all the hypotheses failed to explain why the two-dimensional organism adhered to the three-quarters power relation led us to propose a new hypothesis, in which the allometric relation derives from the self-organized criticality based on local interaction between modulus-comprising organisms.

Are We Close to a Theory of Energy Medicine?

Critical phenomena offer an attractive new theoretical resource for biophysics. Physical instabilities result in fluctuations, the quantum properties of which can be applied to regulatory control mechanisms in living organisms with promising results. Many aspects of energy medicine can be scientifically modeled, in agreement with previous theoretical ideas and speculation, such as the existence of macroscopic quantum coherence in living systems. Light is shed on areas of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) such as Ayurveda, naturopathy, and the nature and action of potentized medicines in homeopathy and other aspects of vibrational medicine.

Allometric scaling law in a simple oxygen exchanging network: possible implications on the biological allometric scaling laws

A simple model of an oxygen exchanging network is presented and studied. This network's task is to transfer a given oxygen rate from a source to an oxygen consuming system. It consists of a pipeline, that interconnects the oxygen consuming system and the reservoir and of a fluid, the active oxygen transporting element, moving through the pipeline. The network optimal design (total pipeline surface) and dynamics (volumetric flow of the oxygen transporting fluid), which minimize the energy rate expended in moving the fluid, are calculated in terms of the oxygen exchange rate, the pipeline length, and the pipeline cross-section. After the oxygen exchanging network is optimized, the energy converting system is shown to satisfy a 3/4-like allometric scaling law, based upon the assumption that its performance regime is scale invariant as well as on some feasible geometric scaling assumptions. Finally, the possible implications of this result on the allometric scaling properties observed elsewhere in living beings are discussed.

Switching of metabolic-rate scaling between allometry and isometry in colonial ascidians

The metabolic rate and its scaling relationship to colony size were studied in the colonial ascidian Botrylloides simodensis. The colonial metabolic rate, measured by the oxygen consumption rate (V(O2) in millilitres of O(2) per hour) and the colony mass (wet weight M(w) in grams) showed the allometric relationship (V(O2) = 0.0412 M(w)(0.799). The power coefficient was statistically not different from 0.75, the value for unitary organisms. The size of the zooids and the tunic volume fraction in a colony were kept constant irrespective of the colonial size. These results, together with the two-dimensional colonial shape, excluded shape factors and colonial composition as possible causes of allometry. Botryllid ascidians show a takeover state in which all the zooids of the parent generation in a colony degenerate and zooids of a new generation develop in unison. The media for connection between zooids such as a common drainage system and connecting vessels to the common vascular system experienced reconstruction. The metabolic rate during the takeover state was halved and was directly proportional to the colonial mass. The scaling thus changed from being allometric to isometric. The alteration in the scaling that was associated with the loss of the connection between the zooids strongly support the hypothesis that the allometry was derived from mutual interaction among the zooids. The applicability of this hypothesis to unitary organisms is discussed.

Homeopathic effect: a network perspective

There are two aspects to the problem of describing the homeopathic effect in physical terms: the nature of the therapeutic agent, and the system on which it acts. The latter can be considered as a network, which provides a conceptual framework that throws new light on long-standing questions, based on generic results such as the enhanced susceptibility of networks near critical states. It suggests a characterisation of health and disease in terms of distance from a critical state. The Internet provides a concrete analogy. This predicts a limiting condition on the acceptable loss of highly connected nodes in the system, and suggests a procedure to measure its connectivity and related parameters.
