Abstract
Sublethal exposure to pesticides can alter the survival and reproduction of a wide range of non-target organisms. However, it remains unclear whether this exposure can alter behaviours that are often essential for long-term population dynamics and maintenance, such as parental care. In this study, we tested the effect of pyriproxyfen exposure (an insect growth regulator) on maternal care in the European earwig, an insect that is both used in pest control in pip-fruit orchards and considered a pest in stone fruit orchards. We exposed 424 females at doses either 10 times lower, equivalent or 10 times higher than normal application rates in French orchards. As maternal care can change over the weeks of family life, we exposed the earwig mothers at five different days before and after egg hatching. We then measured the expression of ten forms of maternal care towards eggs and juveniles, six non-caring behaviours, eggs and juvenile development, metabolic reserves in mothers at egg hatching and females' production of a terminal clutch. First, our results revealed that the three tested doses of pyriproxyfen were non-lethal and confirmed that maternal care decreased throughout both pre- and post-hatching family life. However, we did not detect any effect of pyriproxyfen on maternal care and non-care behaviours, eggs and juvenile development, quantities of lipids, proteins and glycogen in mothers at egg hatching, and on the production of a future clutch. Overall, these findings suggest that the maximal doses of pyriproxyfen authorized in French orchards is likely to have limited effects on the short- and long-term maintenance of populations of the European earwig and raises fundamental questions about the nature of the link between juvenile hormone and parental care in insects.

Abstract
The aim of this work is to describe corpora allata (CA) of several castes of the termite Reticulitermes flavipes that have different rates of juvenile hormone (JH) synthesis, with respect to differences in fine structure, volume, and intensity of allatostatin immunoreactivity in their innervation. The castes chosen are workers and their potential derivatives, apterous secondary reproductives and pre-soldiers (the precursors of soldiers). These castes, at the stages chosen, produce JH at low, high and intermediate rates respectively. Hormone production is positively correlated with volume and negatively correlated with intensity of allatostatin immunoreactivity in axons within the glands. Characteristics of fine structure that correlate with increased activity are increase in abundance and width of mitochondria, decrease in ability to fix and visualize smooth endoplasmic reticulum. These features have previously been described for CA of cockroaches and other insects. Glycogen in the CA of all of the castes studied, especially the large amounts in highly active glands of physogastric apterous reproductive females, is the most striking difference between the CA cells of R. flavipes and previously described CA of cockroaches, in which glycogen is absent throughout the reproductive cycles. This suggests that glycogen is an important source of energy for hormone production by termite CA.

Abstract
Nutrition, hormones and the allocation of physiological resources are intricately related. To investigate these inter-relationships in female burying beetles (Nicrophorus spp.), we examined the effect of diet quality on juvenile hormone (JH) levels and reproduction, and the effect of JH supplementation on reproduction and resistance to starvation. Nicrophorus orbicollis adult females fed a less preferred mealworm larvae diet gained less body mass, had smaller ovaries and had lower titers of JH in their hemolymph than females fed a preferred blowfly diet. When presented a carcass for breeding, females on a less preferred diet oviposited 33% fewer eggs, and eggs were of 18% less mass. Females on the less preferred diet also took longer to begin oviposition as indicated indirectly by the time when their eggs hatched. To investigate the effects of JH, independent of nutrition, JH was topically applied to single and paired females of Nicrophorus tomentosus. When presented a carcass, JH-treated paired females oviposited more eggs (28%-year 1, 44%-year 2) than control females, and also showed a trend toward faster oviposition. JH supplementation had a greater effect on single females. JH treatment increased the proportion of single females attempting reproduction (at least one viable larva), increased the number of eggs (69%-year 1, 123%-year 2), and increased the proportion of females ovipositing early. In separate experiments, treatment with JH or a JH analog negatively affected resistance to starvation in three species. Treatment with JH reduced starvation survival by 10.3% days in N. tomentosus females. Treatment with the JH analog methoprene reduced starvation survival 17.8% in N. orbicollis females and by 18% in Ptomascopus morio females. These results suggest that JH has positive and negative effects on different components of life history.

Abstract
In previous reports, we have shown that the injection of azadirachtin (AZA) as well as 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) into vitellogenic females of Labidura riparia induces inhibition of vitellogenin synthesis and ovarian development. Juvenile hormone (JH) treatment rescues vitellogenin synthesis and ovarian growth (Sayah et al., 1995, 1996). In this work, we have studied ultrastructural changes of corpus allatum (CA) after injection of 200, 400, and 600 ng of 20E or 1, 3, and 5 microg of AZA. CA cells exhibit signs of inactivity in both AZA and females treated with 20E at doses of 3 microg and 400 ng, respectively. Conspicuous cytological effects consisting of multivesicular bodies with dense contents, abnormally large intercellular spaces comprising myelinic structures, and rare smooth endoplasmic reticula occurred in cytoplasm of CA glandular cells in both experimental females. However, the CA ultrastructure of females injected with 20E differs from CA cells of females injected with AZA in having a cytoplasm containing numerous electron-lucent intracellular areas and marked glycogen zones. They also differ in having abundant microtubules and well-developed junctional membranes. At a dose of 600 ng of 20E or 5 microg of AZA, the intensity of the cytotoxic effects is more apparent. CA cells display pycnotic nuclei, spherical mitochondria, large multivesicular bodies, and vacuolization of the cytoplasm. These results are discussed and compared with observations made on other insect species.

Abstract
In previous studies we have shown that injection of the insect growth regulator Azadirachtin (AZA) into young vitellogenic females induces inhibition of vitellogenesis in a dose-dependent manner. Juvenile hormone treatment rescues vitellogenin synthesis and ovarian growth. The cytopathological effects on ovaries and fat body are not linked to an inhibition of feeding. In this work we investigated the effects of AZA on the endocrine and neuroendocrine system. Enzyme immunoassay reveals that ovarian ecdysteroid levels are drastically reduced, in a dose-dependent fashion, by AZA. Ultrastructural study indicates that corpus allatum cells exhibit signs of inactivity and degenerative changes after AZA exposure. Using an antibody against allastostatin-3 of Blatella germanica (BLAST-3), we show the appearance of strong immunoreactivity of numerous cells and axons in the brain of AZA-injected females. We conclude that vitellogenesis inhibition by AZA consists of a direct cytotoxic effect as well as a generalized disruption of endocrine and neuroendocrine functions.

Abstract
The reproductive cycle of Labidura riparia includes two distinct phases of behavior: a feeding and sexual phase followed by a parental and fasting phase. These phases correspond to two contrasting physiological phases (vitellogenesis, followed by ovarian inactivity). These correlations have been verified by correlating radioimmunoassay (RIA) measurements of the levels of circulating juvenile hormones (JH) and ecdysteroids with ovarian state during the first reproductive cycle. Similar studies were also made after experimentally suppressing parental activity (care of eggs) either by depriving females of their eggs or by force-feeding during the egg-care phase. Taking eggs away without feeding caused the disappearance of parental behavior and a short lived period of vitellogenesis. Likewise, feeding in the presence of eggs resulted in vitellogenesis and disappearance of egg-care behavior. Thus, it appears that in order for the parental phase to develop normally it is necessary to preserve the proper external conditions (the presence of eggs) and physiological conditions (fasting).

Abstract
Using in vitro methods, juvenile hormone (JH) esterase activity and alpha-naphthylacetate esterase activity were determined in the hemolymph during the first reproductive cycle of the house cricket, Acheta domesticus. Biochemical properties of the hemolymph JH esterase were studied. alpha-Naphthylacetate esterases increased during the first gonotrophic cycle: peaks of their activity could be observed concomitant with peaks of JH esterase activity. The fluctuations in JH esterase activity correlated with those of hemolymph JH titers. The results are discussed.
