Abstract
Vitreoretinal adhesive strength is thought to play a mechanical role in various retinal diseases; however, collagen fibril properties and inner limiting membrane (ILM) thickness have not been quantitatively correlated to adhesive strength. In this work, we quantified the relationship between collagen fibril density, angle, length, and ILM thickness with vitreoretinal adhesive strength to advance our understanding of structure-function relationships in vitreoretinal adhesion. Following mechanical peel tests, human retinal sections from the equator and posterior pole of donors 42-89 years of age were extracted and processed for transmission electron microscopy. Collagen fibrils at the vitreoretinal interface were segmented and fibril density, angle, length, and ILM thickness quantified. Morphological measurements were correlated with vitreoretinal adhesion measured in the same location. We found that collagen fibril density was 1.6 times greater in the equator compared to the posterior pole across all ages (p=0.0305). Steady-state peel force showed a slight positive correlation with increasing density in both the equator and posterior pole, but was only statistically significant in the equator (p<0.05). Collagen fibril angle and length did not significantly vary with age or region. ILM thickness was 3.8 times thicker in the posterior pole compared to the equator (p<0.0001). ILM thickness was 1.8 times greater in eyes ≤60 years of age compared to eyes >60 of age (p=0.0136). Maximum peel force was significantly correlated with increasing ILM thickness in the equator (p=0.015). A similar trend was seen in the posterior pole, but this was not significant. These data suggest that collagen contributes to adhesion at the vitreoretinal interface, but the structure of the ILM is more influential on the initiation of separation between the vitreous and retina.

Abstract
Introduction Hyalocytes have been recognized as resident tissue macrophages of the vitreous body since the mid-19th century. Despite this, knowledge about their origin, turnover, and dynamics is limited. Areas covered Historically, initial studies on the origin of hyalocytes used light and electron microscopy. Modern investigations across species including rodents and humans will be described. Novel imaging is now available to study human hyalocytes in vivo. The shared ontogeny with retinal microglia and their eventual interdependence as well as differences will be discussed. Expert opinion Owing to a common origin as myeloid cells, hyalocytes and retinal microglia have similarities, but hyalocytes appear to be distinct as resident macrophages of the vitreous body.

Abstract
There is a very wide spread Müller glial response to focal laser photocoagulation lesions in the rabbit retina. In this study we have described the microglial response to similar lesions and compared this with the Müller and retinal ganglion cell responses. Microglia were labelled using nucleoside di-phosphatase histochemistry in adult rabbit retinal wholemounts and compared with axonal and Müller cell responses as shown respectively by neurofilament and GFAP immunohistochemistry. In the normal retina, microglia were located in the nerve fibre layer (NFL), inner plexiform layer (IPL), and sparsely in the outer plexiform layer (OPL). Following laser photocoagulation each layer reacted differently. The NFL reaction was exclusively associated with axonal degeneration, as shown by abnormal neurofilament label, and therefore only started several days after injury. In the IPL, neighbouring microglial cells directed their processes towards the lesion by 2 h and had migrated into the lesion by 6 h, but the reaction did not extend more than 2-3 cell diameters from the lesion and was over by 7 days. In the OPL the cell density increased by 1-2 days over a few millimeters from the lesion. The Müller cells expressed GFAP for several millimeters from the lesion starting at 24 h and persisting for over one month and therefore the correlation with the microglial reaction was poor. The different reaction in each retinal layer is evidence that microglial responses are modulated by local factors, probably mainly by contact with injured retinal elements as well as diffusable factors.

Abstract
A total of 30 eyes of 19 patients with type I diabetes, varying severity of retinopathy, and no posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) were studied clinically, and vitreous examination was performed by preset lens biomicroscopy. Follow-up was 4.0-7.5 years. A total of 15 eyes underwent panretinal laser photocoagulation (PRP) and 15 eyes were left untreated. The incidence of PVD was 8 of 15 353%) after PRP and 1 of 15 (7%) in untreated eyes (P less than 0.02). Minimal vitreous hemorrhage occurred in 4 of 7 treated eyes (57%) that did not develop PVD and in only 2 of 8 (25%) that did. In treated eyes with no history of vitreous hemorrhage, the incidence of PVD was 6/9 (67%); in treated eyes with minimal vitreous hemorrhage at any time, it was 2/6 (33%). In treated eyes, the presence of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (DRS) high-risk characteristics was equally frequent in eyes that developed PVD as in those that did not. These data suggest that PVD occurs following PRP, independent of the severity of diabetic retinopathy or prior vitreous hemorrhage.

Abstract
Six pathological human retinas were studied in order to establish changes, migration, and other reactions of retinal microglia. The different morphological features of other retinal macrophages are also described. Hortega silver carbonate stain was used for this study. This investigation aided in answering some questions on the active movements of microglia elements and other details under discussion.
