Abstract
Homozygous transgenic mice from line A4 have an early-onset progressive neuromuscular disorder characterized by paralysis of the rear limbs, muscle atrophy, and lethality by 4 weeks of age. The transgene insertion site was mapped to distal chromosome 15 close to the locus motor endplate disease (med). The sequence of mouse DNA flanking the insertion site junctions was determined. A small (< 20 kb) deletion was detected at the insertion site, with no evidence of additional rearrangement of the chromosomal DNA. Noncomplementation of the transgene-induced mutation and med was demonstrated in a cross with medJ/+mice. The new allele is designated medTgNA4Bs (medtg). The homologous human locus MED was assigned to chromosome 12. Synaptotagmin 1 and contactin 1 were eliminated as candidate genes for the med mutation. The transgene-induced allele provides molecular access to the med gene, whose function is required for synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction and long-term survival of cerebellar Purkinje cells.

Abstract
Rat microsatellite primers were used for detection of homologous DNA segments in the mouse species (Mus laboratorius, Mus musculus musculus, and Mus spretus). Twenty five (16.3%) of 153 rat primer pairs amplified specific DNA segments, when genomic DNA of mice was used as a template in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Size variation among inbred strains of mice was found for 13 DNA segments (8.5%). Eight out of the 13 polymorphic DNA segments were mapped to a particular chromosome with two sets of recombinant inbred strains, AKXL or BXD. Similarly, mouse microsatellite primers were used for detection of homologous DNA segments in rats (Rattus norvegicus). Twenty (12.0%) of 166 primer pairs amplified specific DNA segments from rat genome. Size variation among inbred strains of rats was found for seven DNA segments (4.2%). Eleven of these 20 DNA segments were mapped with a rat x mouse somatic cell hybrid clone panel and/or linkage analysis by use of backcross progeny. Our results suggest that the mapped DNA segments are really homologs between mouse and rat. These polymorphic DNA segments are useful genetic markers.

Abstract
Restriction endonuclease fragment length variations (RFLV) on mouse chromosome 10 were detected in four genes, namely, the Myb protooncogene (Myb) and the genes for S100 beta protein (S100b), phenylalanine hydroxylase (Pah), and interferon-gamma (Ifg). RFLV were found in restriction patterns generated with BamHI for Myb, in those generated with BglII for S100b, in those generated with EcoRV for Pah, and in those generated with TaqI for Ifg. A multipoint backcross was carried out by the mating (129/Sv-Sl/+ x MOL-MIT)F1 x 129/SvJ(-)+/+. The Sl mutation has phenotypic effects which include deficiencies in pigment cells, germ cells, and blood cells. The following order of genes was derived from the results of the multipoint backcross, with distances between genes in parentheses: centromere--Myb--(34.9 cM)--S100b--(8.5 cM)--Pah--(8.5 cM)--Sl--(12.3 cM)--Ifg--telomere. Most laboratory strains and two strains of Mus musculus domesticus of wild origin carry the Myba, S100a, Paha, and Ifga alleles. In contrast, a strain of M. m. musculus, two strains of M. m. yamashinai, and two strains of M. m. molossinus carry the Mybb, S100b, Pahb, and Ifgb alleles. Other strains of wild origin carry various combinations of these alleles.

Abstract
Thirteen genetic loci spanning murine chromosome 15 from 15A2 (Mlvi-2) to 15F2-3 (Gdc-1) have been mapped. The genetic distance extends to 55.4 cM. Among 151 animals, only 1 animal with a double cross-over was found. The linear order is unambiguous, with the exception of the distal end on 15F1-3. Our analysis favors the order cen-Ela-1/Hox-3-Wnt-1-Gdc-1-ter. This ordering makes necessary the introduction of three tightly spaced double recombination events around and within the Hox-3 locus. Alternatively, Hox-3 may be most distal, and several double recombinations at the telomere lead to map expansion. Despite the unequal distribution along chromosome 15 of G-versus R-bands, a comparison of distances determined by physical and genetic mapping does not indicate an overt difference in distance between both mapping techniques.

Abstract
The mouse lpr gene, which is an autosomal recessive gene causing autoimmune disease with features of human systemic lupus erythematosus and eventually death from severe immune-complex glomerulonephritis, has been mapped on chromosome 19. To determine its exact chromosomal location, a three-point backcross was carried out by mating (MRL/MpJ-lpr/lpr x MOL-MIT)F1 x MRL/MpJ-lpr/lpr using the genes Ly-44 (lymphocyte differentiation antigen-44) and Tdt (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase) as markers. The following order of genes is proposed, with the distances between genes given in parentheses: centromere-Ly-44 (19.3 cM)-lpr (6.1 cM)-Tdt-telomere. The Ly-44a and Tdta alleles are found in all laboratory strains and in the wild Western European subspecies, domesticus and brevirostris. In contrast, the Ly-44b and Tdtb alleles are found in some Asian subspecies, Chinese mice of wild origin, yamashinai and molossinus. Furthermore the third Tdt allele, Tdtc, is detected in castaneus.

Abstract
Restriction endonuclease fragment length variations (RFLV) were detected in mice with DNA probes for myelin basic protein (Mbp), glucocorticoid receptor-1 (Grl-1), and Friend MuLV integration site-2 (Fim-2). RFLV of the Mbp gene were found in SacI restriction patterns, RFLV of the Grl-1 gene were found in EcoRV patterns, and RFLV of the Fim-2 were found in BglII patterns. A three-point backcross was carried out by the backcross mating (C57BL/KsJ-spm/spm x MOL-MIT)F1 males x C57BL/KsJ-spm/spm; spm is an autosomal recessive gene causing sphingomyelinosis. From the results, spm, Grl-1, Fim-2, and Mbp loci were mapped on chromosome 18, and the following order of genes is proposed, with distances between genes in parentheses: centromere--spm--(7.8 cM)--Grl-1--(7.8 cM)--Fim-2--(39.1 cM)--Mbp--telomere. All laboratory strains and two European subspecies (Mus mus domesticus and M. m. brevirostris) carry the Grl-1a, Fim-2a, and Mbpa alleles. In contrast, another wild subspecies from Europe (M. m. musculus) and some Asian subspecies (M. m. molossinus, Chinese mice of wild origin, and M. m. yamashinai) carry the Grl-1b, Fim-2b, and Mbpb alleles. Only castaneus strains carry the intermediate combination of the Grl-1b, Fim-2a, and Mbpb alleles.
