Abstract
1- O-Alkylglycerol ether lipids were investigated in two holothurian species, Cucumaria japonica and C. okhotensis. Species specific differences in the content of 1- O-alkylglycerol ether lipids were found. Some alkyl radicals of the 1- O-alkylglycerol ether lipid molecules contained branched hydrocarbon chains. The ratio between the content of linear and branched saturated 1- O-alkylglycerol ether lipids was 1.53 in C. okhotensis and 0.55 in C. japonica.

Abstract
The distribution of cis-4,7,10,trans-13-docosatetraenoic (c4,7,10,t13-22:4), a peculiar FA previously isolated in the glycerophospholipids of some pectinid bivalves, was investigated in glycerophospholipid classes and subclasses of separated organs (gills, mantle, gonads, and muscle) of the queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis and the king scallop Pecten maximus. Plasmalogen (Pls) and diacyl + alkyl (Ptd) forms of serine, ethanolamine, and choline glycerophospholipids were isolated by HPLC and their FA compositions analyzed by GC-FID. PIs and Ptd forms of serine glycerophospholipids (PlsSer and PtdSer), and to a lesser extend the Pls form of ethanolamine glycerophospholipids (PlsEtn), were found to be specifically enriched with c4,7,10,t13-22:4. This specificity was found to decrease in the tested organs in the following order: gills, mantle, gonad, and muscle. In gills, c4,7,10,t13-22:4 was shown to be the main unsaturated FA of serine glycerophospholipids in both Pls and Ptd forms (23.8 and 19.4 mol%, respectively, for A. opercularis, and 21.0 and 26.2 mol% for P. maximus). These results represent the first comprehensive report on the FA composition of plasmalogen serine subclass isolated from pectinid bivalves. The specific association of the PlsSer with the c4,7,10,t13-22:4 for the two pectinid species can be paralleled to the specific association of the PlsSer with the non-methylene interrupted (NMI) FA and 20:1 (n-11) observed in mussels, clams, and oysters (Kraffe, E., Soudant, P., and Marty, Y. (2004) Fatty Acids of Serine, Ethanolamine and Choline Plasmalogens in Some Marine Bivalves, Lipids 39, 59-66.) This, led us to hypothesize a similar functional significance for c4,7,10,t13-22:4, NMI FA, and 20:1 (n-11) associated with PlsSer subclass of bivalves.

Abstract
The FA composition of glycerophospholipid (GPL) classes and subclasses was investigated in whole animals of three marine bivalve mollusks: the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, and the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Individual organs (gills, mantle, foot, siphon, and muscle) of the Manila clam also were examined. The PS plasmalogen (PSplsm), PE plasmalogen (PEplsm), and PC plasmalogen (PCplsm) subclasses were isolated by HPLC, and their individual FA compositions were examined using GC. Plasmalogen forms of PS and PE, when compared to their respective diacyl forms, were found to be specifically enriched with non-methylene-interrupted (NMI) FA (7,15-22:2, 7,13-22:2, and their precursors) and 20:1 n-11 FA. Such a clear specific association was not found for PCplsm. Interestingly, this trend was most apparent in PSplsm, and the above FA were found to be, respectively, the predominant PUFA and monounsaturated FA in the PSplsm isolated from the three species. This specificity was maintained in all the analyzed organs of the Manila clam but varied in proportions: The highest level of plasmalogens, NMI FA, and 20:1 n-11 was measured in gills and the lowest was in muscle. These results represent the first comprehensive report on a FA composition of the PSplsm subclass isolated from mollusks. The fact that NMI FA and 20:1 n-11, which are thought to be biosynthesized FA, were mainly associated with aminophospholipid plasmalogens (PE and PS) is likely to have a functional significance in bivalve membranes.

Abstract
The effect of dietary lipid on the fatty acid composition of muscle, testis and ovary of cultured sweet smelt, Plecoglossus altivelis, was investigated and compared with that of wild sweet smelt. Cultured fish were fed three different diets for 12 weeks: a control diet rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) (CO group); a diet deficient in DHA and EPA (DP group); and a diet rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3), but deficient in DHA and EPA (LP group). The fatty acid composition of muscle and gonad lipids was related with dietary fatty acids. Despite the difference in DHA and EPA content in the diets, muscles and gonads, respectively, contained almost equal levels of DHA and EPA in each CO and DP group. However, the muscle and gonad of the LP group showed a lower level of DHA than other groups, due to having the highest level of ALA. In the wild fish muscle, the DHA content was similar to that of CO and DP groups, but the EPA content showed the highest level in all groups. There was no difference in the muscle fatty acid proportions between male and female. On the other hand, the testes of cultured and wild fish were rich in DHA, EPA, docosapentaenoic acid and arachidonic acid, while ovaries were rich in oleic, palmitoleic, linoleic acids and ALA. Moreover, of all the groups, the fish fatty acid composition of the LP group was closest to that of wild fish. These results indicate that in the sweet smelt, tissue n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) greater than C20 can be synthesized from dietary precursors and special fatty acids are preferentially accumulated to the testis or ovary, respectively, to play different physiological functions.

Abstract
Gonadal and foot tissues of the green abalone, Haliotis fulgens, farm-raised on macroalgal [corrected] diets, were analyzed for lipids using thin-layer chromatography/flame-ionization detection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Diacylglyceryl ether (DAGE) was 0.7% of total lipids in the gonad. The major alkyl constituents of the glyceryl ether diols in the gonad (as % of total diols) were 16:0 (38%) and 18:1 (36%). While levels of DAGE in the abalone foot were below flame-ionization detection limits, glyceryl ether diols from them were detected using the more sensitive GC-MS procedure. The major diol components in the foot were 18:0 (39%) and 18:1 (32%). To our knowledge, this is the first report of DAGE in abalone tissues. Although the precise role of DAGE in abalone remains to be determined, a possible structural role may exist.

Abstract
The contents and compositions of the 1-O-alk-1'-enyl-2-acyl, 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl, and 1,2-diacyl glycerophospholipids in the muscle and viscera of the ascidian Halocynthia roretzi, and of the gonad of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius, which are eaten to some extent in Alaska and in Asia, were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. 1-O-Alk-1'-enyl-2-acyl glycerophospholipids were found in all of the samples, accounting for 64.4-69.0% of the ethanolamine glycerophospholipid (EPL). By contrast, the levels of the 1-O-Alk-1'-enyl-2-acyl choline glycerophospholipids (CPL) were low (3.1-5.7%). CPL was rich in the 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl subclass amounting to 12.5-23.9% in the ascidian sample. The level of CPL in the sea urchin gonad was extremely high, amounting to 46.1%. The most prominent alkyl chains in the sn-1 position of CPL from the ascidian muscle were 16:0 (44.6%), 18:1 (26.5%), and 18:0 (10.7%), and of CPL from the sea urchin gonad were 18:0 (36.2%), 16:0 (33.0%), and 18:1 (17.8%). Unusually high levels of odd-numbered alkyl chains, e.g., 19:0 and anteiso 17:0, were detected in the CPL of all samples. The prominent alkenyl chains of EPL were 18:0 (69.4%), 16:0 (10.0%), and 18:1 (8.54%) (not counting the vinyl double bond) for the sea urchin gonad. Relatively high levels of 20:1 alkenyl chains were also present. The glycerol sn-2 positions contained high proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Thus, 20:5n-3 (43.6%) and 22:6n-3 (20.1%) were most abundant in the alkylacyl CPL from the ascidian muscle and 20:5n-3 (54.9%) and 20:4n-6 (30.1%) in alkylacyl CPL from the sea urchin gonad. Despite a possible interconversion of the alkyl and alkenyl chains of each class of the ether phospholipids, they showed few features in common.

Abstract
An easy method for the separation of major polar lipid classes by HPLC is described. Maximum resolution was achieved by an automated combination of a silica gel column and a diol column. Polar lipid analysis of the larvae and gonads of Pecten maximus showed the presence of a particular glycolipid especially rich in 22:6(n - 3) and the predominance of 20:4(n - 6) in the phosphatidylinositol. The phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine (diacyl form + alkenylacyl) were the major fractions. The plasmalogen form (25% in larvae, 34% in gonads) was essentially composed of polyunsaturated fatty acids of 20 and 22 carbons in the sn-2 position.

Abstract
1. The relative content of 16:0, 17:0 and 18:0 fatty aldehydes in the lipids of eight species of the far-eastern Bryozoa was studied. 2. Heptadecanoic aldehyde is one of the main aldehydes in the seven species investigated comprising about 30% of the sum of these main bryozoan aldehydes. 3. We suggest the unusually high relative heptadecanoic aldehyde content in the lipids of Bryozoa may be helpful in settling some problems concerning their system.

Abstract
The levels of alkenylacyl, alkylacyl and diacyl subclasses of choline glycerophospholipid (CGP) and ethanolamine glycerophospholipid (EGP) fractions in 28 species of various invertebrates were studied. We found that only small amounts of either 1-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (alkylacyl-GPC) or 1-alkenyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (alkenylacyl-GPE) are present in most species of insects. On the other hand, almost all species examined in various phyla other than Arthropoda were shown to contain large amounts of both alkylacyl-GPC and alkenylacyl-GPE. The highest proportion of alkylacyl subclass in CGP was noted in sponge, Halichondria japonica (81.8% of CGP) and the highest proportion of alkenylacyl subclass in EGP was found in clam worm, Marphysa sanguinea (88.7% of EGP). We next surveyed the presence of platelet-activating factor (PAF)-like lipid in 45 species of invertebrates. PAF-like lipid was widely distributed among various lower animals. The highest value was obtained for sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus, in which PAF-like lipid was present throughout the body. We also confirmed the presence of acetyltransferase activity in several lower animals. These results suggest that alkyl and alkenyl ether-linked phospholipids including PAF are physiologically important molecules particularly for invertebrates belonging to lower phyla.
