Increasing Response Diversity to Intraverbals in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of intraverbal prompts on response diversity and novelty in intraverbals posed to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The intraverbal prompts involving function, feature, and class (FFC) of an item were used in the training of three questions requiring multiple responses. Two Chinese boys with ASD (aged 5-6 years) served as participants. A multiple-probe across three behaviors design was employed. The results indicated that the intraverbal prompts effectively increased the number of divergent responses to all three questions. Novel responses emerged at a low level while generalization to similar questions was not observed following the training.

The basic importance of applied behavior analysis

We argue that applied behavior analysis is relevant to basic research. Modification studies, and a broad range of investigations that focus on the precipitating and maintaining conditions of socially significant human behavior, have basic importance. Applied behavior analysis may aid basic researchers in the design of externally valid experiments and thereby enhance the theoretical significance of basic research for understanding human behavior. Applied research with humans, directed at culturally-important problems, will help to propagate the science of human behavior. Such a science will also be furthered by analogue experiments that model socially important behavior. Analytical-applied studies and analogue experiments are forms of applied behavior analysis that could suggest new environment-behavior relationships. These relationships could lead to basic research and principles that further the prediction, control, and understanding of behavior.

Relating in executive coaching: a behavioural systems approach

Purpose

In recent research the strength and nature of the relationship between coaches and executives appears as a critical success factor in successful coaching outcomes. However, little theory has as yet been devoted to an analysis of how relationships are used in executive coaching. Such an analysis requires going from the monadic, individual level of analysis to the dyadic, relational level. The purpose of this paper is to develop a theory of relating in executive coaching at this dyadic level of analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual analysis of relating in executive coaching is presented, drawing on a combination of the behavioural approach (Skinner and others) and the systems approach (Bateson and others). A verbatim of a coaching conversation serves as an illustration.

Findings

It is found that the behavioural and systems approaches may be fruitfully combined in one behavioural systems approach. Following this, relating in executive coaching is characterised as systemic, behavioural, communicational, and patterned.

Originality/value

The paper is among the first to study executive coaching at the dyadic level of analysis, and to develop a combined behavioural systems approach towards that purpose. This approach and its outcomes add to and can be clearly distinguished from the more common humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive approaches to executive coaching.

Operant variability: evidence, functions, and theory

Although responses are sometimes easy to predict, at other times responding seems highly variable, unpredictable, or even random. The inability to predict is generally attributed to ignorance of controlling variables, but this article is a review of research showing that the highest levels of behavioral variability may result from identifiable reinforcers contingent on such variability. That is, variability is an operant. Discriminative stimuli and reinforcers control it, resulting in low or high variability, depending on the contingencies. Schedule-of-reinforcement effects are orderly, and choosing to vary or repeat is lawfully governed by relative reinforcement frequencies. The operant nature of variability has important implications. For example, learning, exploring, creating, and problem solving may partly depend on it. Abnormal levels of variability, including those found in psychopathologies such as autism, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, may be modified through reinforcement. Operant variability may also help to explain some of the unique attributes of voluntary action.
