Abstract
Mental ill health has complex and interrelated underlying causes, with wider determinants of health often overlooked as risk factors. The 'commercial determinants of health' are gradually receiving more attention and recognition but there is a relative lack of awareness of the commercial determinants of mental health. This aim of this umbrella review was to synthesise systematic review level evidence for the association between commercial determinants and mental health outcomes. This umbrella review included evidence from high, middle, and low-income countries. We included terms related to broader commercial activities and terms focused on six key unhealthy commodities (tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, gambling, social media, fossil fuels) and the impacts of fossil fuel consumption (climate change, air pollution, wider pollution). We included 65 reviews and found evidence from high quality reviews for associations between alcohol, tobacco, gambling, social media, ultra-processed foods and air pollution and depression; alcohol, tobacco, gambling, social media, climate change and air pollution with suicide; climate change and air pollution with anxiety; and social media with self-harm. There was a lack of evidence examining wider practices of commercial industries. Our umbrella review demonstrates that by broadening the focus on commercial determinants, the influence of commercial products and activities on mental ill health can be better understood. The lack of research examining broader commercial practices on mental ill health is an area that should be addressed. Our review highlights the existing base of high-quality evidence for many of these unhealthy commodities' impacts on mental ill health and indicates that commercial determinants is a valuable framework for understanding the drivers of mental ill health.

Abstract
Background Second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure appears to be more common among individuals with depression. However, self-report of SHS exposure is an inaccurate classification compared to confirming SHS exposure using urinary cotinine (UC). Additionally, the dose-response relationship between depression and UC is controversial. Methods The severe stress rate and depression prevalence was estimated among 14530 Korean participants aged ≥19 years using data patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and on UC from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Measured UCs were divided into four categories: UC- (≤0.3 μg/L), UC± (0.4 μg/L-0.9 μg/L), UC+ (1.0 μg/L-11.9 μg/L), and UC++ (≥12.0 μg/L). Results About 55.0 % participants were female and participants' mean age was 51.1 years. Non-smokers were 80.3 %. Among non-smokers, non-SHS exposure participants (SR-) and SHS exposure participants (SR+) were 83.0 % and 17.0 %, respectively. When UC- was used as the reference subgroup, the UC++ subgroup showed a higher depression prevalence, whereas the UC ± subgroup showed a lower prevalence. In the same UC categories, the depression prevalence and severe stress rate were higher among females than among males. Furthermore, the SR + subgroup had a higher severe stress rate than the SR- subgroup. Conclusions Our study showed a paradoxical reduction in the depression prevalence and severe stress rate in the UC ± subgroup compared to the UC- subgroup. Additionally, the dose-response relationship between the SHS exposure biomarker and the depression prevalence was not linear. Our study indicates that an emotional stress-based model may be more appropriate for explaining the relationship between depression and SHS exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are limited data on the association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure across the life course and depressive symptoms among older adults. We aimed to investigate the association of childhood household SHS exposure, adulthood household SHS exposure, lifetime social SHS exposure, and their coexistence with depressive symptoms in older adults. METHODS Data were from the 2011-2012 and 2014 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. About 4000 participants (aged 60 years or older) were recruited in a randomly selected half of the counties and cities in China. Data on SHS exposure, past-year depressive symptoms, and covariates were collected using a questionnaire. The chi-square test (for categorical variables) and t-test (for continuous variables) were used to assess differences in the participant characteristics across groups of SHS exposures. We estimated the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of depressive symptom according to different types of SHS exposure. RESULTS Childhood household SHS exposure (OR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.22-1.66), adulthood household SHS exposure (OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 1.21-1.63) and lifetime social SHS exposure (OR = 1.35, 95%CI = 1.14-1.58) were associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms. Additionally, those with a higher SHS exposure score had higher odds of depressive symptoms (1 point: OR = 1.56, 95%CI = 1.22-2.00; 2 points: OR = 1.77, 95%CI = 1.39-2.25; 3 points: OR = 1.83, 95%CI = 1.45-2.31). The results were similar when stratified by lifetime nonsmoking, former smoking, and current smoking. LIMITATIONS Retrospective design may introduce recall bias. CONCLUSIONS SHS exposure was associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms in older adults, with the effect seeming to be addictive.

Abstract
Background There are well-established literatures documenting the associations between mental disorders and unhealthy behaviors such as poor diet quality, sedentary behavior, and cannabis and tobacco use. Few studies have attempted to understand the respective findings in light of each other, however. Objective The purpose of this review was to assemble comparable data for each behavior-disorder association and assess the associations in terms of their overall strength. The review aimed to include a representative, but not exhaustive, range of studies that would allow for explorative comparisons. Methods Eligible studies were identified via Pubmed searches and citation searching, restricted to publications no older than 2015 written in English. To obtain comparable data, only studies that reported findings as odds ratios were included, and risk of bias related to study samples, behavioral measurement disparities, and control variables was assessed via sensitivity analyses. Findings for each disorder were compared on the basis of different measures of central tendency. Results From 3,682 records, 294 studies were included. The review found evidence of associations between each of the four unhealthy behaviors and psychosis, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while personality disorder was only investigated in relation to cannabis and tobacco use. In overall comparison, the associations were generally of similar strength, and only the association between cannabis use and personality disorder was exceptional in terms of being significantly stronger than its counterparts across disorders and across behaviors. Analyses of bias risk identified some influence from behavioral measurement disparities and lack of adequate statistical control, but findings were generally robust across a range of sensitivity analyses. Conclusion This explorative and comparative review found that poor diet quality, sedentary behavior, and cannabis and tobacco use are about equally strongly associated with a range of different mental disorders. Given the general nature of these associations, we should probably understand them to reflect a general and shared etiology. However, the findings in this review should be regarded as tentative until confirmed by more comprehensive investigations.

Abstract
Secondhand smoke (SHS) is a well-established cause of lung cancer, respiratory disease, heart disease and developmental issues in children, with an overwhelming evidence base spanning over four decades. In this narrative review, we describe studies which have also linked self-reported or cotinine-assessed SHS exposure in the home, workplace and other settings to mental health disorders including depression, suicide, anxiety, and psychological distress in children and adults, sleeping disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and behavioural issues in children, and dementia in older adults. In general, evidence indicates that SHS exposure is associated with these disorders in a dose-response manner, with higher odds reported in people who are exposed to SHS at high levels, frequently, and in the home environment. Most studies so far are cross-sectional albeit in large, nationally representative samples from various countries with a smaller number of longitudinal studies. More research is needed in this area to determine whether SHS is a direct cause of adverse mental health outcomes, and whether creating smokefree environments leads to improved mental wellbeing. In particular, more research is needed on the impact of smokefree home environments, an area which has received relatively little focus in smokefree interventions which generally target public places.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoking. Adolescence is a stage of rapid psychological development and is highly susceptible to various factors that can cause some mental health problems. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of secondhand smoking exposure in never-smoking school adolescents and evaluate whether there is an association between secondhand smoking exposure and mental health. METHODS 70 nationally representative data sets from the Global School-based Student Health Survey, conducted between 2003 and 2017, were used to estimate the prevalence of secondhand smoking exposure and evaluate whether there is an association between secondhand smoking exposure and loneliness, sleeplessness, and suicidal ideation. RESULTS Total 191, 613 no-smoking school adolescents (43.0% boys) were included in this analysis. The prevalence of secondhand smoking exposure ranged from 15.1% in Tajikistan to 79.6% in Timor-Leste. There was no difference in the prevalence of secondhand smoking exposure between boys and girls in most countries. After adjusted, secondhand smoking exposure was positively associated with loneliness (odds ratio 1.39, 95% CI 1.30-1.49), sleeplessness (odds ratio 1.37, 95% CI 1.28-1.47), and suicidal ideation (odds ratio 1.22, 95% CI 1.15-1.30) in never-smoking school adolescents in overall samples. LIMITATIONS Use of self-report measures and potentially limited generalizability. CONCLUSIONS Secondhand smoking exposure remains a serious public health issue among never-smoking school adolescents and its impact on adolescent mental health cannot be ignored. Stricter and more comprehensive policies and bans on secondhand smoking should be implemented, and adolescents' mental health should receive more attention.

Abstract
Background People remain exposed to secondhand smoke, a serious health hazard, inside their home as households face challenges in setting no-smoking rules or are exposed to secondhand smoke drifting in from neighbouring homes. This study explores the psychosocial impacts, views, and experiences with residential secondhand smoke in a densely populated urban setting. Methods In-depth online or face to face interviews with 18 key informants who had been involved in public discourse, policy, advocacy or handling complaints related to residential secondhand smoke, 14 smokers, and 16 non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke inside their home. All participants were residents of Singapore, a densely populated, multi-ethnic city-state. Interview transcripts were coded in NVivo using a deductive and inductive coding process. Findings Secondhand smoke has wide-reaching impacts on physical and psychosocial wellbeing, even if smokers tried to minimise secondhand smoke. Feelings of anxiety and stress are generally tied to feeling discomfort in one’s personal space, a perceived lack of control over the situation, resentment towards smokers, and concerns over the health effects. Family, community, and cultural dynamics add complexities to tackling the issue, especially in patriarchal households. Secondhand smoke exposure from neighbours is considered a widespread issue, exacerbated by structural factors such as building layout and the COVID-19 pandemic. Resolving the issue amicably is considered challenging due to the absence of regulations and a reluctance to stir up conflict with neighbours. While smokers took measures to reduce secondhand smoke, these were described as ineffective by other participants. Smokers appeared to have contrasting views from other participants on what it means to smoke in a socially responsible manner. Conclusion Given the wide-reaching psychosocial impacts of residential secondhand smoke, there is a case for stronger interventions, especially in densely populated urban settings where it is more difficult to avoid. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction and heavy substance use (alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis) play an important role in the development of depression, while frequent substance use affects sexual dysfunction. AIM This study aimed to investigate the association between sexual dysfunction and depression among German adults in a nationally representative sample and the effect of alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use on this association using moderator analysis. METHODS Data come from the German Health and Sexuality Survey (GeSiD) with N = 4,955 men and women aged between 18 and 75 years. We used multiple logistic regression analysis to examine the moderation effect of substance use between sexual dysfunction and depression by including an interaction term. OUTCOMES Self-reported diagnosed and treated depression within the last 12 months and the moderation effect of substance use on the association between sexual dysfunction and depression. RESULTS Men and women with at least 1 sexual dysfunction were more likely to be affected by depression as compared to those without sexual dysfunction. A moderation effect of frequent cannabis use was found between sexual dysfunction and depression among women. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Clinicians and therapists addressing addiction, depression, and dysfunction should keep the complex interactions in mind. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS This study provides new data on the association between sexual dysfunction and depression among German adults in a nationally representative sample and the moderation effect of substance use on this association. Further studies should disentangle the pathways between sexual dysfunction, cannabis use, and depression through moderated mediation analyses. Abstract
Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure patterns of children and adolescents are different from those of adults because children and adolescents spend a majority of their time in the home and school. It was aimed to conduct a systematic review of the published literature regarding the association between depression and the place of SHS exposure among children and adolescents. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases were used for the literature review. The studies were screened and selected by two independent reviewers based on the inclusion criteria. All eight studies included in the systematic review measured SHS exposure in participants' own homes. Two studies measured SHS exposure at school and one study in cars. The majority of the studies showed a positive association between depression and SHS exposure in both private and public places among nonsmoking children and adolescents. Also, they concluded a dose-response relationship between SHS exposure and depression. Health practitioners would be encouraged to work with stakeholders to create smoke-free policies in both private and public places to avoid the adverse effects of SHS exposure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to determine the factors that influence individuals' exposure to tobacco smoke in Turkey according to their education level. DESIGN Secondary data analysis. PARTICIPANTS Altogether, 17 084 individuals aged 15 and over were included in this study. SETTINGS Data set of the Turkey Health Survey in 2019. METHODS Binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with individuals' exposure to tobacco smoke. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The variables age, gender, marital status, general health status, employment status, receipt of psychosocial support and tobacco use were found to be correlated with exposure to tobacco smoke. RESULTS The study determined that individuals who are illiterate/unschooled were exposed to tobacco smoke at a rate of 32.61%, primary school graduates at a rate of 34.32%, primary education graduates at a rate of 41.75%, high school graduates at a rate of 41.04% and university graduates at a rate of 40.34%. CONCLUSION As a result of the study, it is emphasised that men, young individuals, individuals with moderate and very good general health status, those who use tobacco, those who are unemployed and those who receive psychosocial support should be targeted. In addition, appropriate strategies for reducing secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure should be developed, taking into account public health strategies for increasing awareness of the adverse health effects of SHS exposure and the determinants of tobacco exposure according to the study.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association between passive smoking and physical and psychological health in Chinese nurses. Participants of this cross-sectional study comprised 2,484 non-smoking nurses. Passive smoking and demographic information were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Physical, psychological, and overall health status of nurses were measured using the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) health questionnaire. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for nurses' health were estimated by exposure to passive smoking using unconditional logistic regression models. A total of 1,219 nurses (49.07%) were exposed to passive smoking. Of these, 609 (24.52%), 160 (6.44%), and 587 (23.63%) nurses had poorer physical, mental, and overall health, respectively. After adjusting for other confounding factors, compared with the non-passive smoking group, passive smoking was associated with poor physical (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.25–1.83), mental (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.07–2.07), and overall (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.30–1.93) health of nurses, respectively. We also carried out subgroup analyses stratified by age, department, and professional title, which showed that most findings supported the main results. This study demonstrated that exposure to passive smoking was a risk factor for overall decreased physical and mental health status among Chinese nurses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and sleep quality in never-smokers of Northwest China. METHODS Never-smoking adults (≥ 15 years) from Xinjiang, Northwest China, were included in this cross-sectional survey between April and October 2019. SHS exposure in never-smokers was estimated using a structured questionnaire. Sleep quality was evaluated by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), with PSQI score > 5 classified as poor sleep quality. Association of SHS exposure and frequency and duration of SHS exposure with poor sleep quality were analyzed by using a multivariate logistic regression after adjusting for potential confounding factors, including stratification by sex. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 48.0 years, and 77% were females. Of 21,198 never-smokers, 13% (n = 2703) reported SHS exposure and 35% (n = 7390) reported poor sleep quality. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, a significant association was observed between SHS exposure and poor sleep quality (adjusted odds ratio (OR), 1.36; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.24-1.48). Subgroup analysis showed a negative association of SHS exposure with sleep quality in both sexes. However, a significant dose-response relationship of frequency and duration of SHS exposure per week with poor sleep quality was observed only in females. Consistent results were also observed in the aged ≥ 18 years. CONCLUSION Exposure to SHS is associated with poor sleep quality in never-smoking adults of Northwest China. A dose-response relationship between SHS exposure and poor sleep quality is found in women. Avoiding SHS exposure may have beneficial effects on sleep quality, especially for females.

Abstract
This study examined the link between home SHS exposure and psychological distress among college students in China. Between July and September of 2020, 18-25-year-old students in three Chinese universities were invited to complete an online survey. Data from 872 respondents (mean age = 20.28) were analyzed. Psychological distress was assessed by the 10-item Kessler Scale. Home SHS exposure was assessed by the presence of smoking household members, hours of exposure, and exposure to the number of cigarettes smoked. Maternal and paternal attachment were assessed by the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment. Pairwise comparisons of sample characteristics were performed across never-smokers, triers (smoked one or two puffs), and smokers. Generalized linear regression models were constructed to assess the association. More smokers were exposed to home SHS or engaged in ever alcohol and other drug use than never-smokers. In never-smokers, exposure for <1 h/day or ≥3 h/day, or to 6-10 cigarettes/day was associated with increased psychological distress, but they were nullified after adjusting for parental attachment. In smokers, exposure to 6-10 cigarettes/day was associated with decreased psychological distress even after adjusting for parental attachment. Home SHS exposure is a risk factor for psychological wellbeing in never-smokers, the association with smokers warrants further study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is evidence to suggest that tobacco use is associated with suicide attempts. However, it is unclear whether such an association can be extended to include secondhand smoke exposure. Using nationally representative data of school-attending adolescents from 33 countries, we examined the association of tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke with suicide attempts. METHODS We used data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey, a cross-sectional survey conducted among adolescents 12-15 years of age. We used logistic regression to estimate the country-specific associations. We then conducted random effect meta-analyses to obtain overall and country-income level pooled estimates. Lastly, we used logistic regression analyses to investigate a dose-response association of cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke with suicide attempts. RESULTS A positive association between tobacco use and suicide attempts among adolescents was present regardless of country-income level (low income: odds ratio 4.98, 95% CI: 3.11-7.96; lower middle income: 3.47, 2.91-4.15; upper middle income: 3.09, 2.75-3.47; and high income: 3.18, 2.63-3.84) and gender (boys: 3.28, 2.86-3.76; girls: 3.86, 3.30-4.51). Exposure to secondhand smoke was associated with suicide attempts, albeit weakly, among girls only (1.26, 1.14-1.39; boys: 1.00, 0.87-1.15). There was some evidence that a dose-response association of cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke with suicide attempts may only exist among girls. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents who use tobacco, and adolescent girls exposed to secondhand smoke were found to be more likely to attempt suicide; however, future longitudinal studies are warranted to assess causality. IMPLICATIONS Our findings indicate that routine screening of adolescents for tobacco use should be implemented globally, especially when assessing suicidal behaviors and risk. Future longitudinal and intervention studies are warranted to assess causality and whether prevention efforts such as tobacco control interventions and programmes targeting tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke among adolescents could ultimately lead to a reduction in the occurrence of suicide attempts.

Abstract
Background Findings on the association between exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) and depression are contradictory. Comparability of existing research is limited due to varied methods and measures. This study examines the potential association between exposure to SHS and depression and a potential moderation by sex using representative data from Germany. Methods For our study, we used data from the German Health Update (GEDA) 2014/2015 on n = 10,274 never-smokers. We calculated a logistic regression model with an interaction term for potential sex-exposure interactions. We used the self-reported duration of exposure to predict current depression of any type as defined by the Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-8 (score ≥ 10), accounting for a large number of confounders. Results In our sample, prevalence of depression was 8.8% in women and 5.3% in men. 90.4% were never or almost never exposed to SHS, while 7.1% were exposed < 1 h per day and around 2.5% reported being exposed for ≥1 h per day. While SHS exposure for < 1 h per day was not associated with current depression (OR = 1.54; 95%-CI: 0.93–1.61), SHS exposure for at least 1 h per day was associated with increased odds for current depression (OR = 1.59; 95%-CI: 1.08–2.35). No sex-specific differences were found. Conclusions Higher levels of SHS exposure are associated with current depression, although the nature and direction of the association are still unclear. We identified no differences in the association between men and women. More studies, particularly using longitudinal data, are needed to determine the nature of the association.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the effects of changes in smoking behaviour on the presence of depression in participants aged 65 years and over. METHODS Data from the 1st to 6th Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging were used in this study. The participants comprised 374 older adults aged 65 years and over, who had smoked in the past. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the effects of smoking behaviour change on the presence of depression. RESULTS Changes in smoking behaviour were categorised into three groups: (1) dramatically reduced (66.8%), (2) slightly reduced (19.8%), and (3) increased (13.4%). Those participants who showed significantly reduced smoking were more likely to have depression than those who increased smoking. CONCLUSION It is necessary to develop practical protocols and educational programs aimed at preventing and managing depression in older adults aged 65 years and above.

Abstract
Compassion satisfaction (CS) among healthcare professionals is a sense of gratification derived from caring for their suffering patients. In contrast, compassion fatigue, often a consequence of burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS), is detrimental to healthcare professionals' productivity and patient care. While several studies have examined CS, BO, and STS among healthcare professionals, the majority have assessed samples in specific disciplines. However, the comparative differences in these factors by discipline or work setting are not well known. The aims of this study were to examine the differences in CS, BO, and STS by discipline and work setting, and to assess demographic, work-related, and behavioural factors associated with these outcomes. An electronic survey was administered (N = 764) at a large academic medical centre in the southeast United States. Questions elicited demographic variables, work-related factors, behavioural/lifestyle factors, experience with workplace violence, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Findings of the study determined that the rates of CS, BO, and STS vary across healthcare disciplines and work settings. Demographic, work-related, behavioural, and work setting (i.e., experience of workplace violence) factors were differentially associated with experiences of CS, BO, and STS. The results of the study suggest two potential areas for research, specifically workplace violence and sleep quality as a means of further understanding reduced CS and increased BO and STS among healthcare workers. These findings have important implications for future research and policy interventions to enhance healthcare workers' health and safety.

Abstract
Background Second-hand smoke exposure has been associated with poor mental health. However, among Japanese adults, little is known about the association between second-hand smoking and depressive symptoms. We examined this association in a cross-sectional study among a Japanese general adult population sample. Methods Japanese adults were recruited from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study in the Okazaki area between 2012 and 2017. Second-hand smoke exposure and smoking status were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Based on their frequency of exposure to second-hand smoke, non-smokers and smokers were categorized as “almost never,” “sometimes,” and “almost every day”. Depressive symptoms were defined by a Kessler 6 score ≥5 points. We performed a multivariable Poisson regression analysis to obtain adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for depressive symptoms. Results Overall, 5,121 participants (4,547 non-smokers and 574 smokers) were included whose mean age was 63.6 (standard deviation [SD], 10.3) years for non-smokers and 59.33 (SD, 10.2) years for smokers. The association between second-hand smoking and depressive symptoms was significant among non-smokers, but not among smokers. Among non-smokers, PRs compared with “almost never” were 1.25 (95% CI, 1.09–1.42) for “sometimes” and 1.41 (95% CI, 1.09–1.84) for “almost every day” (P for trend <0.001); among smokers, PRs compared with “almost never” were 1.30 (95% CI, 0.82–2.06) for “sometimes” and 1.44 (95% CI, 0.90–2.33) for “almost every day” (P for trend = 0.144). Conclusions Second-hand smoking and depressive symptoms were associated among non-smokers. Our findings indicate the importance of tobacco smoke control for mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Findings on the association between exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) and depression are ambiguous. Similarly, results concerning sex-specific associations are contradictory. Using large and representative survey data from Germany, we examined whether SHS exposure is associated with depressive symptoms/major depression (MDD) and whether this association differs by sex. METHODS We pooled data from three waves of the German Health Update telephone surveys from 2009-2012 on 28,670 never-smokers. Information on SHS exposure was based on self-reports. The outcome was a reported diagnosis of a depressive episode/MDD in the last 12 months before the survey. Logistic regression with a sex-by-SHS interaction term adjusted for socioeconomic and health-related confounders was conducted. Interaction effects were evaluated based on average marginal effects (AME). RESULTS No significant association between SHS exposure and depressive episodes/MDD could be observed (adjusted OR=1.01; 95%-CI=0.86, 1.15). Male never-smokers exposed to SHS were at a significantly lower likelihood of depression than unexposed men (AME= -0.009; 95%-CI= -0.018, -0.0001). No significant differences were observed for women (AME= 0.007; 95%-CI= -0.003, 0.017). LIMITATIONS The association between SHS exposure and depression is prone to residual confounding. Furthermore, all information were cross-sectional and based on self-report. CONCLUSIONS No association between SHS exposure and depression was observed in the combined sample. Among men, the association was counterintuitive. Never-smokers exposed to SHS are presumably more frequently involved in social interactions than those not exposed which may be protective for the development of depressive symptoms. Additional research accounting for residual confounding is necessary to allow further insights into the relationship between SHS exposure and depression.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested an association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and risk of depressive symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether there is a dose-response relationship. The effect estimates were pooled using fixed-effect or random-effect models based on homogeneity analysis. The dose-response meta-analysis was performed by linear and non-linear regression. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the possible sources of heterogeneity. Twenty-four studies were included in this meta-analysis. SHS exposure was significantly associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms (odds ratio (OR) = 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25-1.39). For SHS exposure expressed as an ordinal variable, the dose-response meta-analysis revealed a monotonically increasing relationship between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms. A similar dose-response relationship was observed for SHS exposure expressed as a continuous variable (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.26-1.87). Our findings suggest that SHS exposure is associated with increasing odds of depressive symptoms in a dose-response manner.

Abstract
Few studies have focused on the potential relationship between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and depressive symptoms. This study aimed to explore the potential association between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms and differentiate this association in setting-specific exposure and symptom-specific outcomes. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Guangdong province of China from September to December 2010 using a multistage sampling method to randomly sample adults aged 18 years and older. SHS exposure was defined as inhalation by non-smokers of the smoke exhaled from smokers for at least 1 day a week in the past 30 days. Depressive symptoms were measured using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire. The zero-inflate negative binomial regression models were used to explore the associations between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms. A total of 2771 non-smokers were included in this study, with mean age of 49.6 ± 14.0 years and 70.3% of females. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was significantly higher in participants with SHS exposure than in those without exposure (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.16⁻1.51), and there were similar positive associations for SHS exposure in medical facilities (IRR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.17⁻1.61) and in schools (IRR = 1.46, 95% CI 1.20⁻1.77). Notably, there was a monotonically increasing dose-response relationship between frequency of SHS exposure and depressive symptoms. When differentiating this relationship by the dimensions of depressive symptoms, there were similar dose-response relationships for cognitive-affective and somatic symptoms. When differentiating this relationship by sex, only females showed a significant dose-response relationship. Our findings suggest dose-response relationships between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms in sex-specific and symptom-specific manners. Future longitudinal studies are needed to establish the biological mechanisms of the impact of SHS exposure.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to identify the directionality of the causal relationship and interaction between depression and amount of smoking over time in hardcore smokers using longitudinal descriptive analysis. METHODS Secondary data from the Korean Welfare Panel Study were analyzed using autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. Participants included 342 hardcore smokers who participated in the 8th to 11th waves of the panel study. RESULTS Analyses revealed that change(s) in depression levels according to time had a significant positive relationship with the total amount of smoking per day (β=.29, β=.19, β=.17, p<.001), while change(s) in total amount of smoking per day according to time had a significant positive relationship with depression (β=.43, β=.50, β=.38, p<.001). Analysis of the cross-lagged effect between depression and total amount of smoking per day showed that depression at one time point had a significantly positive relationship with the total amount of smoking per day at the next time point (β=.14, β=.13, β=.13, p=.021), and that the total amount of smoking per day at one time point had a significant positive relationship with depression at the next time point (β=.04, β=.04, β=.03, p=.044). CONCLUSION The findings in the present study confirmed a cross-interaction between depression and total amount of smoking per day in hardcore smokers. The present findings could be used to develop appropriate smoking-related interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) would be positively associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) in perimenopausal women from a population-based perspective, after adjustment for all potential confounders. METHODS This study used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database, 2005-2012, to report on MDD in perimenopausal women. RESULTS The odds ratio (OR) for MDD increased when there was a smoker was in the home, as compared to not having a smoker in the home (aOR = 2.97, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.15-7.67); however, in the non-poor group, the OR for MDD showed no difference between those who had or did not have a smoker in their home. For participants who self-rated their health condition as excellent, very good or good, the OR for MDD increased; it also increased if there were smokers in the home, as compared to those without smokers in the home (aOR = 2.58, 95% CI = 1.08-6.14). CONCLUSIONS The present study results augment our understanding of the clinical and public health significance of SHS, as well as the role of various socioeconomic and self-rated health conditions, in perimenopausal women. Key messages An increasing OR for MDD was demonstrated with regard to health status such as CVD, chronic respiratory tract disease, arthritis, thyroid problems, lower eGFR, fair or poor self-rated health condition, and elevated CRP level. Participants who self-rated their health condition as excellent, very good or good had an increased OR for MDD. The OR also increased if the women had smokers in their home versus women who did not have smokers in the home.

Abstract
The development of depression may involve a complex interplay of environmental and genetic risk factors. PubMed and PsycInfo databases were searched from inception through August 3, 2017, to identify meta-analyses and Mendelian randomization (MR) studies of environmental risk factors associated with depression. For each eligible meta-analysis, we estimated the summary effect size and its 95% confidence interval (CI) by random-effects modeling, the 95% prediction interval, heterogeneity with I2, and evidence of small-study effects and excess significance bias. Seventy meta-analytic reviews met the eligibility criteria and provided 134 meta-analyses for associations from 1283 primary studies. While 109 associations were nominally significant (P < 0.05), only 8 met the criteria for convincing evidence and, when limited to prospective studies, convincing evidence was found in 6 (widowhood, physical abuse during childhood, obesity, having 4-5 metabolic risk factors, sexual dysfunction, job strain). In studies in which depression was assessed through a structured diagnostic interview, only associations with widowhood, job strain, and being a Gulf War veteran were supported by convincing evidence. Additionally, 8 MR studies were included and provided no consistent evidence for the causal effects of obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. The proportion of variance explained by genetic risk factors was extremely small (0.1-0.4%), which limited the evidence provided by the MR studies. Our findings suggest that despite the large number of putative risk factors investigated in the literature, few associations were supported by robust evidence. The current findings may have clinical and research implications for the early identification of individuals at risk for depression.

Abstract
There has been little focus on the possible association between second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure and depressive symptoms among adolescents. Thus, this study aimed to explore the dose–response relationships between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms among adolescents and differentiate these associations in setting-specific exposure and severity-specific outcomes. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a stratified cluster sampling method to obtain a representative sample of high school students in Guangzhou, China. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the potential associations between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms. Among 3575 nonsmoking students, 29.6% were classified as having probable depressive symptoms and 9.6% had severe depressive symptoms. There were monotonically increasing dose–response relationships between setting-specific (public places, homes, or indoor/outdoor campuses) SHS exposure and severity-specific (probable or severe) depressive symptoms. When examining these relations by source of exposure, we also observed similar dose–response relationships for SHS exposure in campuses from smoking teachers and from smoking classmates. Our findings suggest that regular SHS exposure is associated with a significant, dose-dependent increase in risk of depressive symptoms among adolescents, and highlight the need for smoke-free environments to protect the health of adolescents.
