Abstract
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are known to interact with microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments, with substances such as the antimicrobial triclosan (TCS) and the synthetic hormone 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) being prevalent. These persistent contaminants are linked to toxic effects in aquatic organisms. This study aimed to investigate histological and morphometric changes in the gills of Ucides cordatus exposed to microplastics alone and microplastics contaminated with PPCPs. The experimental design included four treatment groups: 1) control (C), 2) virgin microplastics (MP), 3) microplastics fortified with triclosan (MPT), and 4) microplastics fortified with 17α-ethinylestradiol (MPE), with exposure durations of 3 or 7 days. Significant differences were observed in the histopathological indices for treatments with PPCP-fortified microplastics at 3 days (MPT and MPE) and 7 days (MPT). Notable pathologies included necrosis, fibrosis, and circulatory disorders. Exposure duration was significantly associated with morphometric changes, including secondary lamellar width in MPT and secondary lamellar length in MPE. These findings indicate that exposure to microplastics contaminated with PPCPs may impair the osmoregulatory and respiratory functions of Ucides cordatus.

Abstract
This study aimed to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract, skin, and muscles of Sciades herzbergii; detect histopathological changes in the gill and liver; and use these biomarkers for the assessment of potential risks to human health. Fish were sampled during the rainy and dry seasons at two points in São Marcos Bay, Maranhão, Brazil: Ilha dos Caranguejos (IC) and Porto Grande (PG). Isolation and quantification were carried out using COLItest®. Colonies were subjected to identification and phenotypic investigation of antimicrobial resistance using Vitek®. Gill and liver samples were subjected to routine histological examination. The results indicated the presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli, the latter of which showed phenotypic resistance to norfloxacin and gentamicin. Fish caught at PG exhibited more extensive gill and liver damage than fish caught at IC. The findings suggest that histological changes in target organs of S. herzbergii may be influenced by infection with pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate, through changes in the gills and livers of Sciades herzbergii, the environmental contamination to which estuarine organisms are exposed in two areas in São Marcos Bay - MA. Two collection areas located in São Marcos Bay were selected for this study: A1, an area close to the Port Complex, and A2, an area on Caranguejos Island (included in the Environmental Protection Area of Baixada Maranhense). Collections were carried out during rainy and dry periods. Sediments (for trace element analyses), surface water (for physico-chemical analyses), and specimens of S. herzbergii (for biometric measurements and identification of branchial and hepatic histopathology) were collected. Physico-chemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature and salinity) were within limits established by Brazilian legislation. Arsenic (in A1) and nickel (in A1 and A2) were above the legal standards in both periods. The highest percentage of histological alterations in the gills (aneurysms, lamellar fusion and detachment of the epithelium) occurred in the port area, in the rainy (93%) and dry (74%) periods. Liver alterations (melanomacrophage centers and necrosis) occurred only in specimens from the same area, in the rainy (41%) and dry (36%) periods. The highest histological indices of gill and liver changes were recorded in A1. This result was further supported by the total HI value of the lesions, which was higher in the port area compared to A2 (less impacted area), suggesting that the environmental conditions in that location are less favorable for the well-being of these organisms. Permanent environmental monitoring of the area is necessary to control environmental impacts efficiently.

Abstract
Enzymatic (glutathione S-transferase, GST and catalase, CAT) and histological biomarkers in S. herzbergii are important for the analysis of impacted estuaries in port regions of the Brazilian Amazon coast. Fish specimens were collected in two areas in the rainy and dry seasons: Porto Grande (potentially impacted region) and Ilha dos Caranguejos (less impacted region). Sediment samples were collected for chemical analysis. Morphometric, histological, and enzymatic biomarker analyzes were performed. The analysis of the sediments collected in the potentially impacted region showed levels of iron, aluminum and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons above the limits allowed by CONAMA legislation. Histological changes in the gills and liver, as well as GST and CAT activities, were high in fish collected at the port. Analyzes suggest that fish in the potentially impacted region are subject to pollutants that compromise their health.

Abstract
Domestic sewage is an important source of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems and includes both microplastics (MPs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). This study sought to assess the biological effects of the interaction between plastic particles and the antibacterial agent triclosan (TCS). The study relied on the swamp ghost crab Ucides cordatus as a model. Herein polyethylene particles were contaminated with triclosan solution. Triclosan concentrations in the particles were then chemically analyzed. Swamp ghost crab specimens were exposed to experimental compounds (a control, microplastics, and microplastics with triclosan) for 7 days. Samplings were performed on days 3 (T3) and 7 (T7). Gill, hepatopancreas, muscle and hemolymph tissue samples were collected from the animals to evaluate the biomarkers ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), dibenzylfluorescein dealkylase (DBF), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LPO), DNA strands break (DNA damage), cholinesterase (ChE) through protein levels and neutral red retention time (NRRT). Water, organism, and microplastic samples were collected at the end of the assay for post-exposure chemical analyses. Triclosan was detected in the water and crab tissue samples, results which indicate that microplastics serve as triclosan carriers. Effects on the gills of organisms exposed to triclosan-spiked microplastics were observed as altered biomarker results (EROD, GST, GPx, GSH, LPO, DNA damage and NRRT). The effects were more closely associated with microplastic contaminated with triclosan exposure than with microplastic exposure, since animals exposed only to microplastics did not experience significant effects. Our results show that microplastics may be important carriers of substances of emerging interest in marine environments in that they contaminate environmental matrices and have adverse effects on organisms exposed to these stressors.

Abstract
In this study, we analyzed biomarkers and heavy metals in Ucides cordatus specimens caught in mangrove areas [A1 = reference (low impact area); A2, A3 and A4 = port complex (potentially impacted area)] of the Amazonian northern coast of Brazil. Sediments and crab muscles sampled from the potentially impacted mangroves showed high levels of metals. Additionally, catalase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes in the gills and hepatopancreas of the collected crabs were elevated in crabs from A2, A3 and A4 relative to those from A1. The histological characteristics of the gills and hepatopancreas differed in crabs collected from A2, A3 and A4 compared with those collected from A1. The crabs were larger and heavier in the rainy season in A1 and A3 and heavier in the dry season in A4. Heavy metal analyses of sediments, crab muscles and biological responses indicated that the animals are subjected to stress levels differentiated in the mangroves due to a gradient (A4>A3>A2>A1) of anthropogenic pressure in São Marcos Bay. In conclusion, the analyses of metals in the sediment and in the muscles of crabs, as well as the biochemical biomarker and histological analyses, suggest that crabs from mangroves in the port complex region are subject to pollutants that compromise their health.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare biochemical and histological biomarkers in oysters to identify impacted areas in a Brazilian port region. Oysters belonging to the Crassostrea genus were collected in two points in São José Bay (Brazil): (A1) Curupu Island (control area) and (A2) Braga Port (impacted area). Digestive glands from oysters were used to analyze the enzymatic activity of glutathione S-transferase and Catalase. The gills were used for standard histology analyses. Water samples were collected for metal analyses. Our results indicated that there was a change in the activity of oyster GST and CAT enzymes, especially in A2. Histological gill analysis indicated more frequent changes in A2. The analyzed metals presented higher values in A2. The results of this study suggest that enzymatic alterations, histological changes and higher metal values are indicative of initial stress caused by contaminants in São José Bay, especially in the port region.

Abstract
The current study combined chemical data on trace elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from sediment and used a multibiomarker approach in the catfish Sciades herzbergii to evaluate two different sites in São Marcos Bay, Brazil. Higher diffuse contaminations by trace elements and PAH were detected in the sediment of Porto Grande (PG) harbor than in the Ilha dos Caranguejos (IC) reference area. A multibiomarker was used in catfish to evaluate the bioavailability of PAH in bile and the effects of pollutants in target tissues. The parameters considered were oxidative stress biomarkers (SOD, CAT, GSH, GST and LPO) and histopathological alterations and were compared between two seasons. The biological responses revealed adverse effects on the population, as indicated by the presence of trace elements and PAH as stressors. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the biomarkers corroborated these results and indicated that fish from the PG site during the rainy season in 2019 exhibited many biological effects compared to 2018. Overall, the present study showed that environmental contamination increased over the years and provides information on the contamination of sediments in the São Marcos Bay, Brazil. The results showed that the presence of contaminants was correlated with the health status of the catfish S. herzbergii.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to evaluate biomarkers (glutathione S-transferase and catalase) and microorganisms in soft tissues of Crassostrea rhizophorae to assess possible contamination of seafood in Brazil. The oysters were sampled from a reference area (Ports 1 and 2) and an impacted area (Ports 3 and 4) in Brazil (São Luís Island, Maranhão). Six attributes were examined in sampled oysters: glutathione S-transferase activity, catalase activity, concentrations of total coliforms and thermotolerant coliforms, and levels of Escherichia coli and Aeromonas hydrophila. Water samples were analysed for aluminium, cadmium, iron, manganese, lead, mercury, phenolics, and polychlorinated biphenyls. We found that Ports 3 and 4 are impacted by several contaminants (mercury, phenolics, and polychlorinated biphenyls), while Ports 1 and 2 are still relatively free of these contaminants. Changes in enzymes activity as well as the highest tissue bacterial concentrations were recorded in oysters from Ports 3 and 4 during the rainy season.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivou-se neste estudo analisar biomarcadores histológicos e bioquímicos em brânquias de U. cordatus indicativos de impactos na Baía de São Marcos. Caranguejos foram coletados em quatro áreas na Baía de São Marcos: A1= Ilha dos Caranguejos (com baixo impacto); A2= Coqueiro, A3= Porto Grande, A4= Cajueiro (áreas potencialmente impactadas). Mediram-se os dados biométricos de cada exemplar de caranguejo. Amostras de brânquias foram submetidas à técnica histológica padrão e homogeneizadas em tampão fosfato, e o sobrenadante foi utilizado para análise das enzimas glutationa-S-transferase (GST) e catalase (CAT). A biometria indicou que os caranguejos de A1 são significativamente (P<0,05) maiores e mais pesados do que os caranguejos das áreas A2, A3 e A4. As alterações branquiais (rompimento das células pilastras, deformação do canal marginal, deslocamento da cutícula e necrose) foram significativamente (P˂0,05) mais frequentes em caranguejos de A2, A3 e A4 do que nos caranguejos de A1. As atividades enzimáticas da GST e CAT nos caranguejos apresentaram diferença significativa (P<0,05) entre as áreas de coletas, com padrão similar ao observado para as alterações branquiais. Os biomarcadores analisados mostraram que os caranguejos estão sob diferentes níveis de impactos (A4>A3>A2>A1) ao longo da Baía de São Marcos.
