Quality control materials for the determination of trace elements in airborne particulate matter

Bioavailability of arsenic, cadmium, iron and zinc in leafy vegetables amended with urban particulate matter suspension

BACKGROUND

Urban particulate matter (PM) can affect green plants either via deposition on the above-ground biomass, where the contaminants can penetrate the leaf surface, or indirectly via soil-root interaction. This experiment assessed the potential risk of PM-derived risk elements contained in vegetables. The bioavailable portions of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) in leafy vegetables amended by PM via soil and/or foliar application were investigated in a model pot experiment, in which lettuce and chard were cultivated.

RESULTS

By using the physiologically based extraction test simulating in vitro human digestive processes in the stomach and small intestine, the bioavailable portions of toxic elements from PM-amended plant biomass were extracted. Extractable portions of elements by a simulated gastric solution from biomass decreased for lettuce in the order Zn > Cd > As > Fe; while for chard, the order was As > Zn > Cd > Fe. No significant effects of PM physical fractions or soil were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the bioavailable element portions in the PM samples were lower compared to plants, the bioavailable element contents in foliar PM-amended plant leaves exceeded the control and soil PM amendment levels, even after biomass washing.

Toxicologically important trace elements and organic compounds investigated in size-fractionated urban particulate matter collected near the Prague highway

Urban particulate matter was collected in the most exposed area of Prague, near a busy highway, in order to provide petrographic and chemical characterization useful for health impact assessment in that locality or other applications. Samples were collected from filters of the air conditioning system in two years, 2009 and 2010, and sieved into four grain-size fractions: 0.507-0.119 mm, 0.119-0.063 mm, <0.063 mm and sub-fraction <0.025 mm. Methods of destructive and non-destructive analyses were used for the determination of total analyte (As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) contents. Labile forms of some toxicologically important analytes were tested in 2 M HNO(3) extracted solutions. A composition of inorganic and carbonaceous particles of natural and anthropogenic origin and their morphology were studied by optical and electron microscopy. Organic solvent extracts of the samples were analyzed using gas chromatography to compare the organic compound distribution in fractions. Only slight differences between 2009 and 2010 years are visible. The relatively high extractable part of most investigated elements confirms mobility and potential availability to organisms. The changes can be recognized in the petrographic and organic composition in samples from both years, which were likely the result of various inputs of source materials. Specific organic marker compounds indicate contribution from fossil fuels, plant materials and bacteria.

Factors influencing uptake of contaminated particulate matter in leafy vegetables

The contents of cadmium, iron, lead and zinc in the biomass of two species of leafy vegetables after urban particulate matter (PM) application was investigated in lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) and chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla). The experimental design consisted of four variables: i) two different soil types, ii) two vegetables, iii) two size fractions of contaminated particulate matter (PM) (0.063–0.119 mm, and <0.063 mm), and iv) foliar and soil application of the PM. The aliquots of the PM samples were applied to the soil before the experiment and as a foliar suspension during plant growth. The element uptake by plant biomass was significantly higher via foliar application, simulating the atmospheric deposition, than via the roots from the soil application treatment. The content in plants increased rapidly compared to the control treatment for the elements iron, lead and zinc. Gently washing the leaves only slightly reduced the amounts of Fe and Zn. However, the majority of Pb was removed by washing with the concentration dropping from 3000% to 500%. The effect of PM application on Cd contents in plant leaves was negligible, in most cases. Lettuce exhibited higher element uptake compared to chard. No adverse effects of PM application on growth parameters of the vegetables were observed. No significant differences were reported for particle size fractions of PM. Fluvisol soils had a higher element uptake via roots than Chernozem soils. Moreover, the addition of PM into the Fluvisol altered the sorption properties of the soil resulting in a lower Cd uptake by plants growing in PM amended Fluvisols.

Methodological study of extraction procedures applied to urban particulate matter

The modified BCR three-step sequential extraction procedure has been applied to two different samples of urban particulate matters (PM). The distribution of selected trace elements As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn was investigated and, in a comparative study, the presence of common organic air filters in extraction procedures was evaluated. Analytes in separate fractions were determined by ICP-OES and GFAAS, respectively, depending on concentration levels. While, due to air filters, a significant increase of some analytes mobility in individual fractions has been observed in case of the jet-milled PM (tunnel Letna), but in case of the PKC sample such effect was not found. The analyte impurities built in some filters has been tested, and the impact on the reliability of analyte results has been discussed. The arsenic species occurrence and their stability in presence of air filters (size 47 mm) were investigated in both urban PM samples as well, using HPLC-ICP-MS technique. Water soluble and by three-step BCR procedure extractable arsenic forms are shown in chromatograms

Mobility of important toxic analytes in urban dust and simulated air filters determined by sequential extraction and GFAAS/ICP-OES methods

The modified BCR three-step sequential extraction procedure has been applied to homogenized urban dust samples and to simulated air filters loaded with the prepared urban dust via the wet deposition procedure. This work has been focused on comparative study of the distribution of trace elements in both samples and evaluation of the factors influencing the reliability of results with respect to the proposed extraction procedure. Extracted chemical fractions were analyzed by ICP-OES and GFAAS depending on the concentration levels of investigated trace elements As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Pb, selected according to their adverse effect on the human health. Statistically evaluated results indicate significant differences between the extracted portions of analytes in urban dust and simulated air filters, where the mobility of some analytes in simulated air filters was higher than that in urban dust samples. The impact of surfactant Triton X-100 (0.05 vol. %) on the extraction procedure was also investigated.

Mobility assessment and validation of toxic elements in tunnel dust samples--subway and road using sequential chemical extraction and ICP-OES/GF AAS measurements

The modified BCR three step sequential extraction procedure has been applied to homogenized urban dust samples collected in sedimentation chambers of two Prague tunnels (road, Letna, subway, and station Museum), and to SRM 1648 urban particulate matter (NIST) to validate the applicability of the procedure. Analyte concentrations in the fourth step were calculated from the total content of analytes determined and verified before, in case of the SRM 1648 certified values have been utilized. Concentrations of chosen elements As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn (Cu, Fe) in each fraction were measured by ICP-OES and GF AAS (arsenic determination) methods. The work has been focused on (i) levels investigation of toxic elements in dust samples and their distribution following a three-stage sequential extraction procedure, (ii) finding differences between two tunnel samples utilizing the estimation of mobility of trace elements, some macro-component comparisons and main mineralogical phases determinations by XRD analysis, (iii) validation of the proposed procedure using SRM 1648 Urban Particulate Matter (NIST) and comparative data obtained by a capillary electrophoresis (CE) method.
