Antagonistic effects of temperature and dissolved organic carbon on fish growth in California mountain lakes

Larval fish body growth responses to simultaneous browning and warming

Organisms are facing global climate change and other anthropogenic pressures, but most research on responses to such changes only considers effects of single drivers. Observational studies and physiological experiments suggest temperature increases will lead to faster growth of small fish. Whether this effect of warming holds in more natural food web settings with concurrent changes in other drivers, such as darkening water color ("browning") is, however, unknown. Here, we set up a pelagic mesocosm experiment with large bags in the Baltic Sea archipelago, inoculated with larval Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) and zooplankton prey and varying in temperature and color, to answer the question how simultaneous warming and browning of coastal food webs impact body growth and survival of larval perch. We found that browning decreased body growth and survival of larval perch, whereas warming increased body growth but had no effect on survival. Based on daily fish body growth estimates based on otolith microstructure analysis, and size composition and abundance of available prey, we explain how these results may come about through a combination of physiological responses to warming and lower foraging efficiency in brown waters. We conclude that larval fish responses to climate change thus may depend on the relative rate and extent of both warming and browning, as they may even cancel each other out.

Regional Networks of Biological Field Stations to Study Climate Change

Field stations are platforms for documenting patterns and processes in ecosystems and are critical for understanding how anthropogenic climate change reshapes nature. Although networks of field stations have been used to identify patterns at continental to global scales, these broad, sparsely distributed networks miss variation in climate change at local and regional scales. We propose that regional-scale research networks are essential for addressing the myriad of ecological and evolutionary challenges—including management and mitigation options—that cannot be answered by more broadly distributed networks or by individual field sites. We discuss our experiences leveraging natural areas throughout California at the Institute for the Study of Ecological and Evolutionary Climate Impacts. We then explore benefits and challenges of networking research at spatial scales congruent with regional patterns of climate variation and climate change, the challenges of sustained infrastructure and research support, and opportunities for future regional-scale research networks.

Bacteriome depiction and the trophic status of the largest Northern highland lake from Andes system: Lago de Tota, Boyacá, Colombia

Lago de Tota is the largest highland lake in Colombia and one of the most remarkable of Northern Andean Mountain range. This lake is under an anthropogenic-based eutrophication process as a consequence of non-sustainable agriculture practices developing nearby. Notable relationship between the trophic status and Bacteriome loop dynamics has been increasingly disclosed in lakes worldwide. We performed a 16S sequencing analysis to depict the bacterial community present and we inferred its potential gene function in Lago de Tota. Parameters for determining current trophic condition such as total nitrogen (TN), dissolved carbon (DOC), particulate organic matter (POM), and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) were measured. A total of 440 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) arranged into 50 classes were identified based on V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene, harboring high-frequent likely found environmental classes such as Actinobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, Acidimicrobia, and Verrucomicrobiae. A total of 26 bacterial classes configure most abundant predicted functional processes involved in organic matter decomposition (i.e., carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, xenobiotic biodegradation, and energy metabolism). In general, Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria show the highest potential gene functional contributors, although other low-frequent classes OTUs are also relevant in processes of carbohydrate metabolism, xenobiotic biodegradation, and energy metabolism. The Trophic State Index indicates an oligo-mesotrophic status, and additional variables measured (i.e., POM, DOC) suggest the increasing carbon accumulation. Results provide preliminary evidence for several bacteria groups related to eutrophication of Lago de Tota. Under this picture, we suggest that further studies for Bacteriome loop spatial-temporal description are essential to inform local water quality monitoring strategies.

Legacy effects of fish but not elevation influence lake ecosystem response to environmental change

How communities reorganize during climate change depends on the distribution of diversity within ecosystems and across landscapes. Understanding how environmental and evolutionary history constrain community resilience is critical to predicting shifts in future ecosystem function. The goal of our study was to understand how communities with different histories respond to environmental change with regard to shifts in elevation (temperature, nutrients) and introduced predators. We hypothesized that community responses to the environment would differ in ways consistent with local adaptation and initial trait structure. We transplanted plankton communities from lakes at different elevations with and without fish in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California to mesocosms at different elevations with and without fish. We examined the relative importance of the historical and experimental environment on functional (size structure, effects on lower trophic levels), community (zooplankton composition, abundance and biomass) and population (individual species abundance and biomass) responses. Communities originating from different elevations produced similar biomass at each elevation despite differences in species composition; that is, the experimental elevation, but not the elevation of origin, had a strong effect on biomass. Conversely, we detected a legacy effect of predators on plankton in the fishless environment. Daphnia pulicaria that historically coexisted with fish reached greater biomass under fishless conditions than those from fishless lakes, resulting in greater zooplankton community biomass and larger average size. Therefore, trait variation among lake populations determined the top-down effects of fish predators. In contrast, phenotypic plasticity and local diversity were sufficient to maintain food web structure in response to changing environmental conditions associated with elevation.
