Abstract
PURPOSE Chemotherapy-induced taste alterations (CiTA) are significant predictors of gastrointestinal symptoms, malnutrition, and poor prognosis. However, the prevalence and risk factors of CiTA vary substantially between studies. This study aimed to synthesize the prevalence and risk factors of CiTA among cancer patients. METHODS Eight databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, ScienceDirect, Sinomed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and Weipu database) were retrieved to collect observational studies regarding the prevalence or risk factors of CiTA published before June 1, 2024. The random effects meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled prevalence. Subgroup analysis was conducted to identify heterogeneity across studies. For the same risk factor, the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were calculated. RESULTS In total, 30 studies with 15,722 participants were included. The pooled prevalence of CiTA was 70.0% (95% CI: 59.1%-79.9%, I2 = 99.4%), ranging from 21.0% to 100.0%. Female (OR = 2.59, 95% CI: 1.59 to 4.22), patients with xerostomia (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.48 to 2.81), oral mucositis/ulcers (OR = 3.72, 95% CI: 1.46 to 9.47), receiving not less than 2 chemotherapy cycles (OR = 3.95, 95% CI: 3.20 to 4.88) were more likely to develop CiTA. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of CiTA among cancer patients was alarmingly high. Female, xerostomia, oral mucositis/ulcers, receiving not less than 2 chemotherapy cycles were significant risk factors of CiTA. Healthcare practitioners should identify high-risk patients and develop targeted interventions to manage CiTA based on identified risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the awareness among United States (US) oncologists about oral medicine (OM) as a specialty of dentistry, and their collaboration with OM providers. METHODS An online survey was conducted, inviting 1350 US oncologists, with data collected on demographics, practice background, comfort level with diagnosing and treating oral conditions, referral practices for oral conditions, and more. RESULTS Of the invited 1350 oncologists, 192 responded (14% response rate). Among respondents, 46% were familiar with the OM specialty. Of these, 73% had previously sought consultation from OM specialists. The primary reasons for referral included dental clearance before initiating chemotherapy (38.5%), dental clearance before initiating radiotherapy (37%), and managing oral ulcers and oral potentially malignant disorders equally (32.2%). Regarding referrals to providers outside of OM, oncologists primarily referred patients with oral lesions to otolaryngologists (64.6%), followed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons (55.2%) and general dentists (45.3%). CONCLUSION Our study showed that over half of US oncologists were unfamiliar with the OM specialty. However, the referral rate to OM providers was high among oncologists who had prior OM knowledge. It is advisable to enhance the collaboration between OM and oncology specialists to ensure optimal care for patients with cancer.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of taste alterations (TAs) during chemotherapy and their association with nutritional status and malnutrition. In addition to the associated factors with TA, including sociodemographic health-related factors and clinical status, and to investigate coping strategies to manage TA. A multicenter cross-sectional design study was conducted on 120 cancer patients aged at least 18 who had been undergoing at least one round of chemotherapy. TAs were evaluated using the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS), the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST) was used for nutritional screening, the antineoplastic side effects scale (ASES) was used for subjective assessment of chemotherapy side effects, and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was used for comorbidity assessment. SPSS21 software was used to analyze the data, and the independent T-test and one-way ANOVA test were used to determine the association between TAs and a variety of related variables. The prevalence of TAs was 98.3%. Among participants, 48.3% were at low risk of malnutrition, 20% at medium risk, and 31.7% at high risk. Malnutrition risk was associated with taste disorders (p<0.05). Patients' age, gender, educational level, and physical status were associated with TAs (p<0.05). Type of cancer, chemotherapy regimen, and number of chemotherapy cycles were also associated with TAs (p<0.05). A variety of antineoplastic side effects were associated with TAs (p<0.05), including nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, sore mouth and throat, excessive thirst, swallowing difficulty, appetite changes, weight loss, dizziness, lack of energy, disturbed sleep, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. TAs were associated with an increased number of comorbidities, and individuals with diabetes, pulmonary diseases, and hypertension were associated with TAs (P<0.05). Patients in this study rarely practice self-management strategies to cope with TAs. A high prevalence (98.3%) of TAs in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy was found, and it was linked to a variety of negative outcomes. Chemotherapy-induced TAs are an underestimated side effect that requires more attention from patients and health care providers.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the associations of gustatory dysfunction as measured by validated taste strips with demographics and co-morbidities. This cross-sectional study retrospectively analyzed records of patients who attended the Orofacial Chemosensory Center of Hadassah Medical Center between 2017 and 2020. Taste strips were used as a validated method to determine taste dysfunction. A total of 272 subjects were included, 137 (50.4%) women and 135 (49.6%) men, with a mean age of 53.5 ± 19.3 years and age range of 18-98 years. The total taste score among the study population was 8.53 ± 4.03 (scale range 0-16). Age had a significant negative correlation with the total taste score (p = 0.001), and men exhibited worse total (p < 0.001), salty (p = 0.003), and bitter (p < 0.001) scores. Major trauma was associated with worse total (p < 0.001) and specialized taste assessments (sweet (p = 0.001), sour (p = 0.002), salty (p = 0.016), and bitter (p < 0.001)). Chemotherapy was associated with reduced total (p < 0.001), salty (p = 0.003), and bitter (p = 0.001) taste scores. Zinc deficiency exhibited worse salty (p = 0.027) and total (p = 0.038) taste scores. Patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) showed higher salty scores (p = 0.017). Patients who experienced exposure to toxic chemicals exhibited worse salty scores (p = 0.024). We conclude that gustatory dysfunction is associated with older age, male sex, and co-morbidities of major trauma, current chemotherapy, zinc deficiency, BMS, and exposure to toxins. The study highlights the importance of systemic evaluation and quantitive gustatory dysfunction assessment as part of the diagnostic process of patients with subjective complaints of taste disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE Irrespective of the development of acupuncture-based interventions, clinical evidence regarding their efficacy remains controversial owing to issues with the study design and an unclear risk of bias. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of auricular acupuncture in managing taste alterations in patients with cancer undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy. METHODS We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial involving 73 patients randomly assigned to an auricular acupuncture or a control group. The primary outcome was the severity of chemotherapy-induced taste alterations, and the secondary outcomes included quality of life and negative emotions of the patients. RESULTS A total of 49 participants completed the study. Compared to the control group, patients in the auricular acupuncture group showed significant reductions in discomfort, general taste alterations, and total scores on the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, we observed significant improvements in quality of life, including physical function (p = 0.007), role function (p = 0.006), emotional function (p = 0.016), nausea and vomiting (p = 0.021), appetite loss (p = 0.046), and significant improvements in anxiety and depression (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that auricular acupuncture may be a beneficial intervention for managing chemotherapy-induced taste alterations in patients with cancer receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. It may also contribute to improvements in quality of life and negative emotions. However, these results are preliminary, and further evaluation with larger randomized controlled trials is necessary.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are at high risk of malnutrition due to eating difficulties partly mediated by sensory alterations and salivary dysfunction. Clinical studies have mostly focused on taste and smell alterations, while changes in oral somatosensory perception are largely understudied. The study aimed to investigate oral somatosensory (tactile, texture, chemesthetic, and thermal) responses and salivary functions of HNC patients in comparison to healthy controls. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using psychophysical tests in HNC patients (n = 30) and in age- and gender-matched control subjects (n = 30). The tests included measurements of point-pressure tactile sensitivity, whole-mouth chemesthetic stimulation, food texture discrimination, and temperature discrimination. Salivary functions, including hydration, saliva consistency, pH, volume, and buffering capacity, were also evaluated. RESULTS HNC patients demonstrated significantly lower chemesthetic sensitivity (for medium and high concentrations, p < 0.05), thermal sensitivity (p = 0.038), and salivary functions (p = 0.001). There were indications of lower tactile sensitivity in the patient group (p = 0.101). Patients were also less sensitive to differences in food roughness (p = 0.003) and firmness (p = 0.025). CONCLUSION This study provided evidence that sensory alterations in HNC patients extend beyond their taste and smell. The measurements demonstrated lower somatosensory responses, in part associated with their reduced salivary function. Oral somatosensory alterations and salivary dysfunction may consequently impart the eating experience of HNC patients. Thus, further investigations on food adjustments for this patient group seem warranted.

Abstract
Post-oropharyngeal cancer treatment complications include a multitude of oral side effects that impact overall survival and quality of life. These include acute and chronic conditions affecting the oral cavity and head and neck, such as mucositis, infection, xerostomia, dysgeusia, radiation caries, osteonecrosis, and trismus. This review will summarize the most common oral complications from oropharyngeal cancer therapy. The authors would like to point out that the literature cited frequently combines oropharyngeal and head and neck cancer results. If recommendations are made strictly related to oropharyngeal cancers, this will be highlighted.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer therapy is essential and lifesaving; however, it can have short- and long-term consequences on patients' health. Up to 87% of cancer patients report changes in taste function, yet patients report a lack of support from clinicians regarding their experience with taste loss during and following treatment. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess clinicians' knowledge and experience with managing patients with taste loss and identify potential gaps in the availability of educational materials and diagnostic tools. METHOD In an online survey, sixty-seven participants who identify as clinicians and practice in the United States and work with cancer patients that complain of taste problems answered questions on their knowledge and experience supporting cancer patients experiencing changes in taste function and provided their opinion on access to educational materials. RESULTS The current study reports gaps in participants' knowledge of taste and taste disorder terminology, with 15.4% correctly defining both taste and flavor and roughly half were familiar with specific taste disorder classifications. Over half of the participants reported not having access to adequate information to help their patients manage taste alterations. Only two-thirds of participants reported routinely asking patients if they are experiencing changes in taste function. CONCLUSION Clinicians' responses emphasized the need to improve access to educational materials regarding taste changes and increase the availability of information regarding management strategies. Addressing these inequities in education and improving the standard of care is the first step in improving the care for cancer patients suffering from altered taste function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES COVID-19, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a severe threat to human health and the economy globally. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of taste and/or smell dysfunction and associated risk factors in mild and asymptomatic patients with Omicron infection in Shanghai, China.DesignThis was a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study. SETTING COVID-19 patients at the makeshift hospital in the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre were recruited from March to April 2022. PARTICIPANTS In total, 686 COVID-19-infected patients who were defined as mild or asymptomatic cases according to the diagnostic criteria of New Coronavirus Pneumonia Prevention and Control Programme ninth edition (National Health Commission of China, 2022) were enrolled. MEASURES Data to investigate taste and smell loss and to characterise other symptoms were collected by the modified Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale and Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 questionnaires. The risk factors for the severity of taste/smell dysfunction were analysed by binary logistic regression models. RESULTS 379 males (379/686, 55.2%) and 307 females (307/686, 44.8%) completed the questionnaires to record recent changes in taste and smell ability. A total of 302 patients (44%) had chemosensory dysfunction with Omicron infection, of which 22.7% (156/686) suffered from both taste and smell dysfunction. In addition, cough (60.2%), expectoration (40.5%), fever (33.2%) and sore throat (32.5%) were common symptoms during Omicron infection. The quality-of-life-related indicators were negatively associated with participants' self-reported taste and smell dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of taste or/and smell dysfunction in patients with Omicron infections was 44%. Individuals with chemosensory dysfunction had significantly higher rates of various upper respiratory influenza-like symptoms, xerostomia and bad breath. Moreover, smell dysfunction was a risk factor for the prevalence of taste dysfunction in patients with Omicron infection. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ChiCTR 2200059097.

Abstract
Cancer is currently a significant therapeutic challenge and is frequently connected with numerous adverse effects. Despite many improvements in chemotherapy, oral complications are common, leading to poor quality of life and chemotherapeutic dose reduction, which impair survival. This review summarizes the most common dental complications in patients receiving chemotherapy. We mainly focus on oral mucositis as it is a major cause of dose-limiting toxicity. Furthermore, oral candidiasis, viral infections, and xerostomia will be discussed. Conclusions: preventing complications is significantly more important than treating them. All patients beginning systemic anticancer treatment should undergo a thorough oral examination and get appropriate prophylaxis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the symptom clusters of gastric cancer patients receiving postoperative chemotherapy, identify the sentinel symptom of each symptom cluster, and compare the differences in sentinel symptoms of patients for gastric cancer with different characteristics. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study. Patients with postoperative gastric cancer who received chemotherapy in the medical oncology department from October 2021 to July 2022 were selected for the study using a convenience sampling method.The General Information Questionnaire and the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Gastrointestinal Cancer (MDASI-GI) were used for the survey. RESULTS A total of 245 patients participated in the study. There were five symptom clusters in the patients. Fatigue, nausea, sadness, and taste alteration were the sentinel symptoms of the disease symptom cluster, gastrointestinal symptom cluster, emotional symptom cluster, and neurotoxic symptom cluster, respectively. No clear sentinel symptom was found in the gastric-cancer-specific symptom cluster. Statistically significant differences were observed in fatigue, nausea, sadness, and taste alteration among patients receiving postoperative chemotherapy for gastric cancer with differences in gender, duration since diagnosis, tumor site, chemotherapy regimen, chemotherapy cycle, red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, albumin level, plasma D-dimer level, indirect bilirubin level, glutamic pyruvic transaminase level, total bile acid level, and uric acid level. CONCLUSION People with postoperative chemotherapy for gastric cancer experience multiple concurrent symptoms. Of the multiple symptoms that occur simultaneously, patients tend to focus on 1 or 2 symptoms of particular significance and use the occurrence of 1 symptom to explain the others. The understanding of symptom clusters and sentinel symptoms could be beneficial to assess and manage both in postoperative patients with gastric cancer during chemotherapy. Clinical staff should use sentinel symptoms as the targets for symptom cluster evaluation and effective intervention.

Abstract
In non-cancer populations, inorganic dietary nitrate (NO3-) supplementation is associated with enhanced cardiorespiratory function but remains untested in patients with a history of cancer. Therefore, this pilot study sought to determine if oral NO3- supplementation, as a supportive care strategy, increases left ventricular (LV) function and exercise performance in survivors of cancer treated with anticancer therapy while simultaneously evaluating the feasibility of the methods and procedures required for future large-scale randomized trials. Two cohorts of patients with a history of cancer treated with anticancer chemotherapy were recruited. Patients in cohort 1 (n = 7) completed a randomized, double-blind, crossover study with 7 days of NO3- or placebo (PL) supplementation, with echocardiography. Similarly, patients in cohort 2 (n = 6) received a single, acute dose of NO3- supplementation or PL. Pulmonary oxygen uptake (VO2), arterial blood pressure, and stroke volume were assessed during exercise. In cohort 1, NO3- improved LV strain rate in early filling (mean difference (MD) [95% CI]: - 0.3 1/s [- 0.6 to 0.06]; P = 0.04) and early mitral septal wall annular velocity (MD [95% CI]: 0.1 m/s [- 0.01 to - 0.001]; P = 0.02) compared to placebo. In cohort 2, NO3- decreased the O2 cost of low-intensity steady-state exercise (MD [95% CI]: - 0.5 ml/kg/min [- 0.9 to - 0.09]; P = 0.01). Resting and steady-state arterial blood pressure and stroke volume were not different between conditions. No differences between conditions for peak VO2 (MD [95% CI]: - 0.7 ml/kg/min [- 3.0 to 1.6]; P = 0.23) were observed. The findings from this pilot study warrant further investigation in larger clinical trials targeting the use of long-term inorganic dietary NO3- supplementation as a possible integrative supportive care strategy in patients following anticancer therapy.

Abstract
Two of the highest prevalent symptoms reported by cancer patients are taste dysfunction (17.6-93%) and dry mouth/xerostomia (40.4-93%). While it has been hypothesized that reduced saliva may impair taste function, few studies investigate the co-occurrence of taste and dry mouth symptoms in cancer patients. This review provides a summary of the physiological relationship between saliva and taste, focusing on taste transduction mechanism, regulation of the taste sensitivity, and protection of taste receptor cells, including the impact of cancer treatments and malignancy on saliva function, salivary components, and the mechanisms in which it can negatively impact the taste function. Here, the authors present a scoping review of the recent literature reporting on the association between taste dysfunction and dry mouth in cancer patients, including reports of non-pharmaceutical liposomal agents or drugs taken to improve dry mouth symptoms that also assess taste dysfunction. Considering the complexities of cancer and cancer treatment, understanding the physiological relationship between saliva and taste function may provide important insight into identifying treatments for alleviating taste dysfunction and dry mouth symptoms. There are substantial research gaps given the limited studies assessing the co-occurrence of taste loss and dry mouth and inconsistencies in the assessment of these symptoms. Clinical studies examining taste dysfunction will provide a foundational groundwork that will help understand the relationship between taste and saliva. Considering the increased rates in survivorship and the significant negative impact of taste dysfunction on quality of life, more research is needed to reduce the suffering of cancer patients.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to assess the presence of dysgeusia in patients receiving anticancer therapy and to explore possible factors influencing its occurrence. A total of 242 adult patients with histological diagnoses of malignant neoplasia and undergoing all types of anticancer treatment were included in the analysis. Data were collected from May 2019 to November 2019 at the Unit of Medical Oncology of Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy. Dysgeusia was assessed using the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS), while treatment-related symptoms were assessed using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). Patients were aged 68 ± 13 years, mostly males (65%). A large proportion of them was undergoing chemotherapy (42.2%), while the others were receiving immunotherapy (20.7%), hormone therapy (15.5%), targeted therapy (12.8%), or a combination of them. Overall, 21.5% of patients reported dysgeusia, 17.4% nausea, 10.7% dysosmia, 9.9% xerostomia, 4.5% mucositis, and only 3.7% vomiting. The targeted therapy showed the greatest adverse effects, followed by chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. When patients with dysgeusia were analyzed, phantogeusia and parageusia was the most affected dimension of gustatory disorders. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in CiTAS scores were found according to treatment-related symptoms for nausea and mucositis.
