Abstract
This paper presents a simple method for the surface modification of polypropylene pipette tips by adsorbing a photo-initiator, 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPAP), to create reactive sites for the formation of a layer of ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) and subsequent monolith polymerization. The types of monomers and the degree of crosslinking dramatically affected the monolith shrinkage and detachment in unmodified tips. Effective surface modification for anchoring monolithic materials to pipette tips was achieved using 15 wt% DMPAP and 10 wt% EDMA in methanol with UV irradiation at 365 nm. The extraction of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, serotonin, and bisphenol A (BPA) using methacrylate and activated charcoal composite monoliths was investigated in terms of breakthrough capacity. The application of monolithic pipette tip micro-solid-phase extraction followed by HPLC-UV was demonstrated for determining BPA leaching from baby-feeding bottles and canned foods. Wide linearity ranging from 0.1 to 100 ng mL-1 (R2 = 0.9998) with good repeatability (% RSD = 3.9 %) and accuracy (% recovery = 93-106 %) was obtained. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.084 and 0.280 ng mL-1, respectively. By varying the sample loading volume from 0.50 to 10.00 mL with eluting volume of 150 μL, a 2-to-52-fold pre-concentration factor was observed.

Abstract
This study introduces a reliable and inexpensive magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction to extract imipramine and its primary metabolite (desipramine) from urine samples. To accomplish this aim, Fe3 O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized by sonication, subsequently, polycarbonate was precipitated gradually onto the surface of them to form the adsorbent. Extraction recoveries of 85% and 76%, enrichment factors of 57 and 51, limits of detection of 2.5 and 2.8 μg/L, and limits of quantification of 8.3 and 9.3 μg/L were obtained for imipramine and desipramine under the optimal conditions, respectively. In addition, relative standard deviations for intra- (n = 6) and inter-day (n = 5) precisions at two concentrations (50 and 100 μg/L of each analyte) were less than or equal to 4%. Short extraction time, good repeatability, high enrichment factors, and simplicity are the main advantages of the proposed method.

Abstract
Green bioanalytical techniques aim to reduce or eliminate the hazardous waste produced by bioanalytical technologies. A well-organized and practical approach towards bioanalytical method development has an enormous contribution to the green analysis. The selection of the appropriate sample extraction process, organic mobile phase components and separation technique makes the bioanalytical method green. UHPLC-MS is the best option, whereas supercritical fluid chromatography is one of the most effective green bioanalytical procedures. Nevertheless, there remains excellent scope for further research on green bioanalytical methods. This review details the various sample preparation techniques that follow green analytical chemistry principles. Furthermore, it presents green solvents as a replacement for conventional organic solvents and highlights the strategies to convert modern analytical techniques to green methods.

Abstract
A poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)-based magnetic sorbent was used for the rapid and sensitive determination of tricyclic antidepressants and their main active metabolites in human urine. This material was characterized by magnetism measurements, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and thermogravimetric analysis. The proposed analytical method is based on stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The main parameters involved in the extraction step were optimized by using the response surface methodology as a multivariate optimization method, whereas a univariate approach was employed to study the desorption parameters. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method was properly validated showing good linearity (at least up to 50 ng mL-1) and enrichment factors (13-22), limits of detection and quantification in the low ng L-1 range (1.4-7.0 ng L-1), and good intra- and inter-day repeatability (relative standard deviations below 15%). Matrix effects were observed for the direct analysis of urine samples, but they were negligible when a 1:1 v/v dilution with deionized water was performed. Finally, the method was successfully applied to human urine samples from three volunteers, one of them consuming a prescribed drug for depression that tested positive for clomipramine and its main active metabolite. Quantitative relative recoveries (80-113%) were obtained by external calibration. The present work expands the applicability of the SBSDME to new analytes and new types of magnetic sorbents.

Abstract
Antidepressants are an important class of drugs to treat various types of depression. The determination of antidepressants is crucial in biological samples to control adverse effects in humans and study pharmacokinetics and bioavailability. Direct measurement of antidepressants in biological and water samples is a considerable challenge for analysts due to their low concentration, the high matrix effects of real samples, and the presence of metabolites of these drugs in biological samples. The challenge leads to using sample preparation processes as a critical step in determining antidepressants. Extraction and microextraction procedures have been widely utilized as sample preparation procedures for these drugs. The purposes of extraction or microextraction methods for antidepressant medications are to preconcentrate the analyte, reduce the matrix effects, increase the selectivity of the procedures, and convert the sample to a suitable format for introducing it into detection systems. In the review, the various extraction and microextraction methods of these drugs in biological, real water, and wastewater samples were investigated. The theory of each technique was briefly addressed to understand the features and factors affecting each method. The extraction and microextraction methods were classified based on their application for antidepressants, and the advantages and disadvantages of each technique were reviewed. The new developments to overcome the limitations of each procedure were discussed. The investigation indicated the number of applications of liquid-phase microextraction for extracting antidepressants has been almost equal to that of solid-phase microextraction.

Abstract
The increase in the consumption of antidepressants is a public health problem worldwide, as these are a class of compounds widely used in the treatment of several illnesses, such as depression and anxiety. This work aimed to develop and optimize a method for the quantification of a number of antidepressants and their metabolites (fluoxetine, venlafaxine, O-desmethylvenlafaxine, citalopram, sertraline, and paroxetine) in 100 µL of oral fluid using the dried saliva spots (DSS) sampling approach and gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The method was validated, presenting linearity within the studied range, with detection and quantification limits ranging between 10 and 100 ng/mL, and coefficients of determination (R2) of at least 0.99 for all analytes. Recoveries were between approximately 13 and 46%. The analysis of precision and accuracy presented acceptable coefficients of variation and relative errors, considering the criteria usually accepted in the validation of bioanalytical procedures. The method herein described is the first to be reported using DSS for the extraction of antidepressants, proving to be a sensitive, simple, and fast alternative to conventional techniques, and capable of being routinely applied in clinical and forensic toxicology scenarios.

Abstract
In-needle microextraction consists of the confinement of the sorbent, by coating or packing, inside a metallic needle. The size of the needles reduces the eluent requirements providing an efficient preconcentration of the analytes. In this work, hypodermic needles coated with polydopamine (PDA) are presented as microextraction devices to isolate six tricyclic antidepressants from oral fluid samples. The coating consists of the in-surface polymerization of dopamine at pH 8.5 and mild conditions (room temperature and water as solvent). The PDA coating over the stainless-steel surface confers the needles with a high extraction ability towards the target analytes. After the extraction, the eluates were analyzed by direct infusion MS spectrometry, working in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, which provided a sample throughput of 30 samples per hour. The variables affecting the synthesis (number of coating cycles, the concentration of dopamine, and needle surface pre-treatment) and the extraction (sample salinity, sample loading cycles, and the number of elution strokes) were studied in depth. Under the optimum conditions, a matrix-matched calibration model was built. The limits of quantification are between 2 and 5 ng mL−1 with linear ranges up to 1000 ng mL−1 for all analytes. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), is better than 10% for all analytes. Accuracy was calculated as recovery, and the obtained values are between 84% and 107%. A single-blind assay was also performed to evaluate the suitability of the method for real application. Hypodermic needles coated with polydopamine for the extraction of antidepressants.![]()

Abstract
Preparation of the biological samples is one of the most critical steps in sample analysis. In past decades, the liquid-liquid extraction technique has been used to extract the desired analytes from complex biological matrices. However, solid-phase extraction (SPE) gained popularity due to versatility, simplicity, selectivity, reproducibility, high sample recovery %, solvent economy, and time-saving nature. The superior extraction efficiency of SPE can be attributed to the development of advanced techniques, including the nanosorbents technology. The nanosorbent technology significantly simplified the sample preparation, improved the selectivity, diversified the application, and accelerated the sample analysis. This review critically expands on the to-date advancements reported in SPE with particular regards to the nanosorbent technology.

Abstract
In the present work, with the focus on an environmentally-friendly approach, some gels were prepared by synthesizing amine-modified lignin, extracted from sugarcane bagasse, and further esterification and subsequent freeze-drying. These lignin-based gels were implemented as extractive phases in an online micro-solid phase extraction (μSPE) setup in conjunction with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detector. The developed method was used for analytical determination of valsartan and losartan in urine samples. To study the effect of the functionalization process, the efficiency of the unmodified lignin and the functionalized lignin were compared both in the absence and the presence of graphene oxide (GO), presumably as a suitable doping agent. Surprisingly, higher extraction efficiency for the functionalized lignin, compared to both unmodified lignin and GO was observed. The amination process for the prepared gel was analyzed and proved by CHNS elemental analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The morphology of sorbet was investigated via scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and a nanoscale cauliflower feature was observed. The method was optimized and subsequently applied to the analysis of the urine samples. Limits of detection (LOD) of 8 and 6 µg L - 1, limits of quantification (LOQ) of 27 and 20 µg L - 1 and linear dynamic range (LDR) of 27-2000 and 20-2000 µg L - 1 with intraday relative standard deviations (RSD%) of 4 and 3% were obtained for valsartan and losartan, respectively. The whole online μSPE-HPLC setup was conveniently used for the analysis of a patient urine sample and a quantity of 352 μg L - 1 of losartan was found. Acceptable relative recoveries (109-108 and 95-94% for valsartan and losartan) revealed the analytical potential of the method for the determination of drugs in complex urine samples.

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal a 1D chain structure, with close contacts expanding the structure into 3D including π-interactions and hydrogen bonding. The utility of 1 as a sorbent for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (D-μSPE) of basic organic compounds such as antidepressants is supported by the presence of many functional groups on the surface of 1 (such as pendant carboxylates, Mo=O, Mo-NO, and CH groups) as well as extensive electrostatic interactions. Therefore, 1 can be a suitable choice as sorbent in the D-μSPE of antidepressant drugs from human plasma samples via appreciable adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Determination of the extracted antidepressant drugs was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV), with calibration plots being linear in the concentration range 0.1-500 ng mL-1 for amitriptyline and nortriptyline, 0.2-500 ng mL-1 for imipramine, and 0.5-300 ng mL-1 for sertraline. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values were calculated for both intra-day and inter-day precision, and the RSD% values were in the range 3.9 to 5.2% and 4.6-5.4%, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) was determined as 0.03-0.2 ng mL-1. Due to the good stability and reusability of the sorbent, the adsorption capacity had no obvious decrease after being used 20 times. Finally, the D-μSPE-HPLC-UV method was applied for the determination of antidepressant drugs in human plasma samples with recoveries of the analytes in the range 94.9 to 102%. The article describes the synthesis of a robust molybdenum-based coordination polymer, and its application as sorbent for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of antidepressant drugs from human plasma samples.

Abstract
Polymeric monolithic columns are fabricated by in situ polymerization of the corresponding monomer, crosslinkers, porogenic solvents and radical initiators within a mold. Compared with the conventional packed solid phase extraction adsorbents, polymeric monolithic columns with a continuous porous structure process distinctive advantages of rapid mass transfer and excellent permeability, which facilitates the extraction of trace amounts of the target from the matrix even at high flow velocities. Besides, these materials can be easily fabricated in situ within various cartridges, avoiding a further packing step associated with packed particulate adsorbents. Additionally, the abundant monomer availability, flexible porous structure, and wide applicable pH range make monoliths versatile for use in separation science. Thus, polymeric monolithic columns have been increasingly applied as efficient and promising extraction media for sample pretreatment food, pharmaceutical, biological and environmental analyses. However, these materials usually have the difficulty in morphology control and their interconnected porous micro-globular structure, which may result in low porosity, limited specific surface area and poor efficiency. In addition, polymeric monoliths suffer from the swelling in organic solvents, thus decreasing the service life and precision while increasing the cost consumption. Recently, the development of nanomaterial-incorporated polymeric monoliths with an improved ordered structure, enhanced adsorption efficiency and outstanding selectivity has attracted considerable attention. Nanoparticles are considered as particulates within the size range of 1-100 nm in at least one dimension, which endows them with unique optical, electrical and magnetic properties. These materials have a large surface area, excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, remarkable versatility, as well as a wide variety of active functional groups on their surface. With the aim of exploiting these advantages, researchers have shown great interest in applying nanomaterial-incorporated polymeric monoliths to separation science. Accordingly, significant progress has been achieved in this field. Nanomaterials can be entrapped via the direct synthesis of a polymerization solution that contains well dispersed nanomaterials in porogens. In addition, nanoparticles can be incorporated into the monolithic matrix by copolymerization and post-polymerization modification via specific interactions. Therefore, nanomaterial-incorporated polymeric monoliths combined the different shapes, chemical properties, and physical properties of the polymers with those of the nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles can improve the structural rigidity as well as the thermal and chemical stabilities of monolithic adsorbents. Besides, nanoparticles are capable of increasing the specific surface area and providing multiple active sites, which leads to enhanced extraction performance and selectivity of polymeric monolithic materials. In recent years, diverse types of nanomaterials, such as carbonaceous nanoparticles, metallic materials and metal oxides, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks and inorganic nanoparticles have been extensively explored as hybrid adsorbents in the modes of solid phase extraction, solid phase microextraction, stir bar sorption extraction and on-line solid phase extraction. This review specifically summarizes the fabrication methods for nanomaterial incorporated polymeric monoliths and their application to the field of sample pretreatment. The existing challenges and future possible perspectives in the field are also discussed.

Abstract
This manuscript describes the development of an innovative method to determine cannabinoids (cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol) in human plasma samples by pipette tip micro-solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectromtery. An octyl-functionalized hybrid silica monolith, which had been synthesized and characterized, was used as a selective stationary phase. The octyl-functionalized hybrid silica monoliths presented high permeability and adequate mechanical strength. The micro-solid phase extraction variables (sample pH, draw-eject cycles, solvent for phase clean-up, and desorption conditions) were investigated to improve not only the selectivity but also the sorption capacity. The method was linear at concentrations ranging from the lower limit of quantification (10.00 ng/mL) to the upper limit of quantification (150.0 ng/mL). The lack of fit and homoscedasticity tests, as well as the determination coefficients (r2 greater than 0.995), certified that linearity was adequate. The precision assays presented coefficient of variation values lower than 15%, and the accuracy tests provided relative error values ranging from 3.2 to 14%. Neither significant carry-over nor matrix effects were detected. Therefore, the pipette tip micro-solid phase extraction/liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry method has demonstrated to be adequate to determine cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol simultaneously in plasma samples for therapeutic drug monitoring of patients undergoing treatment with cannabinoids.

Abstract
A novel polymeric monolith using N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate as the monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinker was successfully synthesized in a syringe and applied for direct solid-phase extraction of four benzodiazepines (bromazepam, triazolam, midazolam and diazepam) from undiluted urine samples prior to high performance liquid chromatography. The monolith was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments. Moreover, extraction parameters, including loading, washing and eluting conditions were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method obtained linear ranges of 2.0-500 ng mL-1 with correlation coefficients (r) higher than 0.9997. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (S/N = 10) were 0.4-0.6 ng mL-1 and 1.4-2.0 ng mL-1, respectively. The recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 83.7% to 103% with the intra- and inter-day precisions from 0.6-7.6% to 2.7-9.8%. The present monolith allowed direct loading of crude urine samples without any filtration or dilution step. Besides, the sorbent offered an enhancement factor of 16.7-20.6 and was stable enough for ten replicate cycles of extraction/desorption of urine samples. The developed method presented an alternative strategy for the accurate and convenient determination of benzodiazepines in urine samples.

Abstract
Biological samples are usually complex matrices due to the presence of proteins, salts and a variety of organic compounds with chemical properties similar to those of the target analytes. Therefore, sample preparation is often mandatory in order to isolate the analytes from troublesome matrices before instrumental analysis. Because the number of samples in drug development, doping analysis, forensic science, toxicological analysis, and preclinical and clinical assays is steadily increasing, novel high throughput sample preparation approaches are calling for. The key factors in this development are the miniaturization and the automation of the sample preparation approaches so as to cope with most of the twelve principles of green chemistry. In this review, recent trends in sample preparation and novel strategies will be discussed in detail with particular focus on sorptive and liquid-phase microextraction in bioanalysis. The actual applicability of selective sorbents is also considered. Additionally, the role of 3D printing in microextraction for bioanalytical methods will be pinpointed.

Abstract
Glucocorticoids have a certain whitening effect on the skin. However, frequent and long-term use of cosmetics including glucocorticoids is harmful to health. Herein, we proposed a novel micro-solid phase extraction method for the detection of prednisolone acetate, prednisone, and prednisolone in cosmetics coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography. In this method, porous monolithic polymer micro-extraction bars were prepared by "one-step, one-pot" in situ photopolymerization combined with sacrificial support in hollow fiber under water atmosphere. The crucial factors such as pH of sample solution, extraction, and elution times that influence micro-extraction were optimized and found to be 9.0, 2 h, and 32 min, respectively. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear range of the calibration curves were from 5.0 to 2000 µg/L with correlation coefficients (R2 ) between 0.9922 and 0.9996. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 1.5 µg/L and 5.0 µg/L, respectively, and the recoveries were found to be in range of 69.0-113.3%. The analysis of precision for intraday and interday were less than 10.40 and 10.59%. The device has been successfully achieved photopolymerization under water atmosphere. The results indicated that this method is simple, accurate, and satisfactory for the pretreatment and determination of glucocorticoids in complex cosmetics samples.

Abstract
Pipette tip-based solid phase extraction (PT-SPE) has been proved to be an effective and user-friendly separation technique due to its miniaturized procedure and practical convenience. However, the vast majority of existing PT-SPE devices consist of a filter-sorbents-filter sandwich structure, which may suffer the unforeseen risk of sorbents leakage caused by the looseness of filters. More importantly, many high-capacity nanosorbents with particle size smaller than pore size of filters are unavailable. Thus, sorbent packing-free and sample low-consumption PT-SPE could be a more robust strategy for separation and detection, but such a possibility has not been explored yet. Herein we report a tubing reshaping strategy for facile fabrication of sorbent packing-free PT-SPE devices. Three types of reshaped PTs, namely stretched tube-like, self-crimping and filter in-built PTs, were fabricated via simple heating and stretching operations. The reshaped PTs exhibited flexible surface chemical post-modification. The SPE process was directly performed in reshaped PTs with an obviously enhanced extraction efficiency compared to once-shaping PTs while no need of packing sorbents. Extraction of nucleosides from human urine by boronic acid-functionalized reshaped PTs was demonstrated. Our findings technically renovate the structural composition of PT-SPE devices. As PTs are inexpensive and high-plasticity, the sorbent packing-free SPE scheme presented herein could find more promising applications and provides a new perspective for design and fabrication of novel sorbent packing-free SPE devices.

Abstract
A facile and convenient approach for the preparation of interconnected multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) monolithic sorbents in recycled plastic caps has been developed. The method, which was based on the photopolymerization of the individual MWCNTs via the formation of a W/O medium internal phase emulsion (40/60 w/w%), provides control over the size of pores, rigidity, and the mechanical stability of the final solid. Pluronic L121 was used as a surfactant containing the water phase inside it and, consequently, the organic and non-polar phase, in which the MWCNTs and the cross-linker were trapped, remained on the outside of the droplets. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the morphology of both the emulsions and the final solids, respectively. In addition, nitrogen intrusion porosimetry was performed in order to study how the specific surface area of the final monolithic solid changed (from 19.6 to 372.2 m2 g-1) with the variables involved in the polymerization step. To exemplify the great sorbent potential of the synthesized material, a colorimetric assay based on the retention of methylene blue within the interconnected MWCNT monolithic structure was carried out. Finally, following the positive results, the carbon nanotube-monolithic stirred caps were applied for the determination of chlorophenols in a biological matrix such as human urine, obtaining excellent recovery values (91-98%) and good precision (5.4-9.1%) under optimized extraction conditions. Abstract
A porous monolithic solid based on single-walled carbon nanohorns dahlia-like structure, produced from a medium internal phase emulsion (MIPE), was prepared in a polypropylene tip using UV energy. Thus, single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) were added to the organic phase where they polymerized in the presence of a radical initiator. A cross-linker (ethylene dimethacrylate, EDMA) was also used in order to obtain a more robust structure. On the other hand, aqueous phase was the responsible for generating the pores in the final solid being inside the droplets generated by the surfactant (Pluronic L121) used to stabilize the polymerization emulsion. Variables related to the formation of the monolithic phase including the stability and composition of emulsion mixture, size of pores, solvent flow resistance and robustness, were studied in detail. In addition, the potential of the SWNH-monolith as extractant phase was evaluated using parabens as target analytes. The LODs ranged from 1 to 7 μg L-1, while the linear range was extended up to 5000 μg L-1. The reproducibility of the extraction procedure with different batches of emulsions was acceptable with RSD values < 16% and one prepared SWNH-tip can be used for more than 100 times without apparent extraction losses. The microextraction unit yielded an enrichment factor of 20 for all analytes (extraction efficiency of 100%), with recovery values between 80% and 116% in human urine samples.

Abstract
This article describes a method for the modification of paper with single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) to form stable suprastructures. The SWCNHs form stable dahlia-like aggregates in solution that are then self-assembled into superior structures if the solvent is evaporated. Dipping paper sections into a dispersion of SWCNHs leads to the formation of a thin film that can be used for microextraction purposes. The coated paper can be easily handled with a simple pipette tip, paving the way for disposable extraction units. As a proof of concept, the extraction of antidepressants from urine and their determination by direct infusion mass spectrometry is studied. Limits of detection (LODs) were 10 ng/L for desipramine, amitriptyline, and mianserin, while the precision, expressed as a relative standard deviation, was 7.2%, 7.3%, and 9.8%, respectively.
