Abstract
Background Root perforation repair presents a significant challenge in dentistry due to inherent limitations of existing materials. This study explored the potential of a novel polydopamine-based composite as a root repair material by evaluating its sealing efficacy, radiopacity, and surface topography. Methods Confocal microscopy assessed sealing ability, comparing the polydopamine-based composite to the gold standard, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Radiopacity was evaluated using the aluminium step wedge technique conforming to ISO standards. Surface roughness analysis utilized atomic force microscopy (AFM), while field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) visualized morphology. Results The polydopamine-based composite exhibited significantly superior sealing efficacy compared to MTA (P < 0.001). Radiopacity reached 3 mm aluminium equivalent, exceeding minimum clinical requirements. AFM analysis revealed a smooth surface topography, and FESEM confirmed successful composite synthesis. Conclusion This study demonstrates promising properties of the polydopamine-based composite for root perforation repair, including superior sealing efficacy, clinically relevant radiopacity, and smooth surface topography. Further investigation is warranted to assess its clinical viability and potential translation to endodontic practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective is to compare the preventive effect on secondary caries of glass ionomer cement (GIC) restorations with amalgam or resin-composite restorations. METHODS Two independent researchers conducted a systematic search of English publications in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane and Scopus. They selected randomized clinical trials comparing secondary caries incidences around GIC restorations (conventional GIC or resin-modified GIC) with amalgam or resin-composite restorations. Meta-analysis of the secondary-caries incidences with risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) as the effect measure was performed. RESULTS This review included 64 studies. These studies included 8310 GIC restorations and 5857 amalgam or resin-composite restorations with a follow-up period from 1 to 10 years. Twenty-one studies with 4807 restorations on primary teeth and thirty-eight studies with 4885 restorations on permanent teeth were eligible for meta-analysis. The GIC restorations had a lower secondary caries incidence compared with amalgam restorations in both primary dentition [RR= 0.55, 95% CI:0.41-0.72] and permanent dentition [RR= 0.20, 95% CI:0.11-0.38]. GIC restorations showed similar secondary caries incidence compared with resin-composite restorations in primary dentition [RR= 0.92, 95% CI:0.77-1.10] and permanent dentition [RR= 0.77, 95% CI:0.39-1.51]. Conventional GIC restorations showed similar secondary caries incidence compared with resin-modified GIC-restored teeth in both primary dentition [RR= 1.12, 95% CI:0.67-1.87] and permanent dentition [RR= 1.63, 95% CI:0.34-7.84]. CONCLUSIONS GIC restorations showed a superior preventive effect against secondary caries compared to amalgam restorations, and a similar preventive effect against secondary caries compared to resin-composite restorations in both primary and permanent teeth. Abstract
BACKGROUND Early detection of secondary caries near dental restorations is essential to prevent further complications. This systematic review seeks to evaluate the sensitivity of fluorescence and near-infrared (NIR) imaging techniques for detecting secondary caries and to provide insight into their clinical utility. METHODS A comprehensive search strategy was used to select studies from seven databases, emphasizing diagnostic accuracy studies of secondary caries detection using fluorescence and NIR imaging techniques. The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) instrument assessed bias risk and practicality. Two evaluators performed data extraction, screening, and quality assessment independently. RESULTS From 3110 initial recordings, nine studies were selected for full-text analysis. Wide variations in sensitivity (SE) and specificity (SP) values were reported across the studies. These studies exhibited variable SE and SP values, and the findings highlighted the importance of method selection based on clinical context. This systematic review underlines the potential for fluorescence and NIR imaging to detect secondary caries. However, results from different studies vary, indicating the need to consider additional variables such as restoration materials. CONCLUSIONS Although these technologies exhibit potential for detecting caries, our research underscores the complex procedure of identifying secondary caries lesions. It is a continuous necessity for progress in dental diagnostics to promptly identify secondary caries lesions, particularly those in proximity to tooth-colored ones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the radiopacity of 20 current dental resin composites with digital radiography. METHODS Ten specimens, 10-mm in diameter and 1-mm thickness, were prepared and radiographed using phosphor plates close to Al step wedges and tooth sections. The mean grey values (MGVs) were measured using an ImageJ software program and converted to equivalent Al thickness. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tamhane post hoc test (p < 0.05). Correlation between mean radiopacity and filler content (wt% and vol%) of the tested materials was analyzed with linear regression analysis. RESULTS The radiopacity of all composites ranged from 1.32 mm Al (Estellite Flow Quick) to 3.41 mm Al (Charisma Classic). All the tested materials, except four restorative materials, had a radiopacity equal or higher than the enamel (p < 0.05). Linear regression revealed low correlation between the radiopacity and filler content of the composite. CONCLUSION Majority of the materials has appropriate radiopacity for dental restorations. There was great variation in radiopacity level, may clinically affect the diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of bioactive and conventional restorative materials in controlling secondary caries (SC) and to provide a classification of these materials according to their effectiveness. METHODS A search was performed in Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, BBO, Lilacs, Cochrane Library, Scopus, IBECS and gray literature. Clinical trials were included, with no language or publication date limitations. Paired and network meta-analyses were performed with random-effects models, comparing treatments of interest and classifying them according to effectiveness in the permanent and deciduous dentition and at 1-year or 2/more years of follow-up. The risk of bias and certainty of evidence were evaluated. RESULTS Sixty-two studies were included in the qualitative syntheses and 39 in the quantitative ones. In permanent teeth, resin composite (RC) (RR = 2.00; 95%CI = 1.10, 3.64) and amalgam (AAG) (RR = 1.79; 95%CI = 1.04, 3.09) showed a higher risk of SC than Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC). In the deciduous teeth, however, a higher risk of SC was observed with RC than with AAG (RR = 2.46; 95%CI = 1.42, 4.27) and in GIC when compared to Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cement (RMGIC = 1.79; 95%CI = 1.04, 3.09). Most randomized clinical trials studies showed low or moderate risk of bias. CONCLUSION There is a difference between bioactive restorative materials for SC control, with GIC being more effective in the permanent teeth and the RMGIC in the deciduous teeth. Bioactive restorative materials can be adjuvants in the control of SC in patients at high risk for caries.

Abstract
Research related to the development of a dental infiltrant for minimally invasive treatment of initial caries of hard dental tissues is presented. The formulation of the developed infiltrant material includes typical methacrylate monomers used in dentistry, an author’s adhesion monomer containing metronidazole, a photoinitiating system and yttrium trifluoride (YF3). The main objective of the study was to evaluate penetration into decalcified root cementum using scanning electron microscope of an experimental preparation with the characteristics of a dental infiltrant compared to a commercial preparation with the addition of YF3 as a contrast agent. Microscopic observations showed that YF3 particles virtually did not penetrate deep into the root cementum—this was mainly due to the particle size of YF3. Observations of cementum and root dentin tissue infiltration: resin tissue infiltration was visible to a depth of about 80 to 120 μm without the use of a tracer, which, due to agglomeration and particle size, remained on the cementum surface or in the resin used for inlaying. There were no differences between the degree of penetration of an experimental preparation with the characteristics of a dental infiltrant, as compared to a commercial preparation.

Abstract
Background/Aim: Radiopacity of dental restorative materials is significant to detect secondary caries, overhangs, and voids. This study aimed to evaluate whether radiopacity of dental restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry was sufficient. Material and Methods: Specimens of 2 mm thickness and 4 mm diameter were prepared in the plastic molds. Six composite materials, one compomer material, and one conventional glass ionomer cement were used and three specimens of each material were prepared. Three radiographs were taken from dental restorative materials and aluminum step wedge. Digital images obtained were recorded. Mean gray values of the dental restorative materials and aluminum step wedge were measured on digital radiographs. Results: All composite resins displayed higher radiopacity values than an equal thickness of 2 mm Al. Posterior composite (201.62±1.99 MGV) showed higher radiopacity value than the anterior composite (86.19 ±1.45 MGV). There was no significant difference in radiopacity values of different shades of the same composite. There was no significant difference in radiopacity values between glass ionomer cement and compomer. Glass ionomer cement showed higher radiopacity value (8.11 mm Al) than anterior composite (5.31 mm Al). Conclusions: Radiopacity values of dental materials used in this study were sufficient. Both resin materials and the glass ionomer cement had sufficient radiopacity values. Posterior composite showed the highest radiopacity value. Radiopacity values were not affected by different shades.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiopacities of various types of restorative materials with different thicknesses compared with enamel, dentin, and aluminum. Materials and Methods Four bulk-fill resins, 2 hybrid ceramics, 2 micro-hybrid resin composites, 6 glass ionomer-based materials, 2 zinc phosphate cements, and an amalgam were used in the study. Twelve disk-shaped specimens were prepared from each of 17 restorative materials with thicknesses of 1 mm, 2 mm, and 4 mm (n=4). All the restorative material specimens with the same thickness, an aluminum (Al) step wedge, and enamel and dentin specimens were positioned on a phosphor storage plate and exposed using a dental X-ray unit. The mean gray values were measured on digital images and converted to equivalent Al thicknesses. Statistical analyses were performed using 2-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test (P<0.05). Results Radiopacity was significantly affected by both the thickness and the material type (P<0.05). GCP Glass Fill had the lowest radiopacity value for samples of 1 mm thickness, while Vita Enamic had the lowest radiopacity value for 2-mm-thick and 4-mm-thick samples. The materials with the highest radiopacity values after the amalgam were zinc phosphate cements. Conclusion Significant differences were observed in the radiopacities of restorative materials with different thicknesses. Radiopacity was affected by both the material type and thickness.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study assessed radiopacity of resin-based computer-aided-design/computer-aided-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials by areal grayscale pixel value measurement. METHODS Radiopacities of six resin-based CAD/CAM block materials and resin composite were evaluated and compared to that of enamel and dentin. Specimens of 1-mm thickness were placed on photostimulable phosphor plate and irradiated with digital x-ray unit. On the radiographic image, regions of interests were determined for each specimen and areal grayscale pixel values were measured. Elemental analysis was performed with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) on field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images of the specimens. Data were analyzed statistically (α = 0.05). RESULTS Radiopacity values of the restorative materials were significantly different from each other (P < 0.05). Radiopacity values of two resin-based CAD/CAM materials were significantly lower than that of dentin (P < 0.05). All tested restorative materials contain zirconium, three materials contain barium, and only resin composite contains lanthanum. CONCLUSION Four CAD/CAM materials with higher amounts of zirconia or barium (>18%) had radiopacity values significantly higher than the dentin; while two materials with lower amounts of zirconia (<4%) and/or no-barium, had radiopacity values significantly lower than the dentin. EDS analysis suggests materials containing elements with higher atom numbers such as zirconia and barium could exhibit higher radiopacity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the radiopacity of 2 bulk-fill resins (SonicFill and Filtek Bulk Fill) and a nanocomposite (Filtek Z350 XT) resin compared with enamel, dentin, and aluminum as measured with different exposure parameters. STUDY DESIGN Resin disks were radiographed together with a 1-mm human tooth section and an aluminum stepwedge, at exposure times of 0.2 and 0.32 s, and source-image (S-I) distances of 30 and 40 cm, using complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and photostimulable phosphor systems. Grayscale values were measured using ImageJ software. Paired Student t tests were used to compare the effect of the receptor on grayscale values for each material. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effects of receptor, exposure parameters, and the resins on radiopacity. RESULTS All resins exhibited greater radiopacity scores than enamel and were significantly different from each other. Filtek Z350 produced the lowest radiopacity values, whereas SonicFill produced the highest. The radiopacity values were higher on images acquired with CMOS receptors. Receptor type, exposure time, S-I distance, and material, as well as many interactions of these parameters, affected the radiopacity of the resins. CONCLUSION The tested resins complied with ISO 4049. Exposure parameters and digital receptors affected their radiopacity.

Abstract
Objectives To perform a systematic review of test methodologies on conventional restorative glass-ionomer cement (GIC) materials for mechanical and optical properties to compare the results between different GICs. Material and Methods Screening of titles and abstracts, data extraction, and quality assessments of full-texts were conducted in search for in vitro studies on conventional GICs that follow the relevant specifications of ISO standards regarding the following mechanical and optical properties: compressive strength, flexural strength, color, opacity and radiopacity. Sources The Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), Brazilian Bibliography of Dentistry (BBO) databases from Latin-American and Caribbean System on Health Sciences Information (BIREME) and PubMed/Medline (US National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health) databases were searched regardless of language. Altogether, 1146 in vitro studies were selected. Two reviewers independently selected and assessed the articles according to pre-established inclusion/exclusion criteria. Among all the properties investigated, only one study was classified as being of fair quality that tested compressive strength and was included. It was observed that many authors had not strictly followed ISO recommendations and that, for some properties (diametral tensile strength and microhardness), there are no guidelines provided. Conclusions It was not possible to compare the results for the mechanical and optical properties of conventional restorative GICs due to the lack of standardization of studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE While the radiopacity of restorative material affects the radiographic diagnosis of the teeth, there is no data about the radiopacity of current restorative computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) materials. Therefore, the present study compared the radiopacity values of current restorative CAD/CAM blocks to facilitate the material choice within such a wide variety of materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens were prepared from 13 different restorative CAD/CAM blocks to compare with enamel and dentin. The specimens placed on the occlusal phosphor plate were imaged with aluminum step wedge and tooth section. The radiopacity values were calculated using the Image J program. The radiopacity values of the specimens were converted to mmAl values with the Curve Expert 1.4 program. RESULTS The difference between the radiopacity values of dentin and e.max CAD was not significant, however, they exhibited a significant difference from the other 14 groups (P < .05). Enamel and Obsidien, Suprinity, and Celtra Duo had greater radiopacity values with significant differences from the other 12 materials whereas the difference within these groups was not significant (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS The evaluated restorative CAD/CAM materials have significantly different radiopacity values. Among these permanent restoration blocks, the highest radiopacity value was observed in Celtra Duo, the lowest in Block HC. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Cerasmart, Lava Ultimate, Obsidian, Vita Suprinity, Celtra Duo Blocks have adequate radiopacity for inlay, onlay and crown restorations, however, the use of Vita Enamic, Vita Mark II, GC LRF blocks and the others which have lower radiopacity value than dentin for the same kind of restorations depend on the radiopacity of the luting cement for the purpose of recurrent caries detection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare decision-making based on bitewing analysis of restored proximal surfaces by general dental practitioners (GDPs) with diagnossis and clinical decisions made by experts in cariology and restorative dentistry. METHODS This practice-based study used a database of 7 general dental practices. Posterior bitewing radiographs were selected from the electronic patient files of patients, and 770 cases of proximal restored surfaces were selected. Fifty percent of the cases which lead to the restorative decision, and the other half were cases decided for monitoring by the GDPs. Three experts performed radiographic assessment. The outcome variables were agreement of diagnosis and decision of treatment. Cohen's kappa statistic was used. RESULTS For the experts, moderate to substantial intraexaminer agreement was observed for the diagnostic criteria, and kappa values of 0.77, 0.79, and 0.88 were obtained for each expert regarding the treatment assignment. Agreement between GDPs and the majority of experts for secondary caries varied between 67 and 83%. One hundred seventy-three out of 385 cases that were treated by GDPs were decided for monitoring by the experts, while 8 cases that were decided for monitoring by the GDPs were decided for treatment. The agreement between experts and GDPs was moderate for secondary caries detection, and fair for treatment decision. CONCLUSION The GDPs tend to have a less conservative approach regarding the decision to intervene or not concerning the reassessment of restorations, showing moderate agreement with the experts for secondary caries detection and fair agreement regarding the treatment decision. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study highlights that GDPs tend to have a less conservative approach to the decision to intervene or not in posterior restorations, compared to experts in cariology and restorative dentistry. Efforts should be made to reduce these differences based on minimally invasive dentistry.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess longitudinally the radiopacity of resin composites under the influence of photoactivation and photoaging processes. Ten specimens (1 mm thick and 4 mm in diameter) of three different microhybrid resin composites, Filtek Z250 XT (R1), TPH 3 Spectrum (R2), and Opallis (R3), were prepared for this study. For longitudinal assessment of radiopacity, radiographic images were obtained five times. The first time (T1), the specimens were not photoactivated; the second time (T2), the specimens were photoactivated; and the next three times, photoaging was carried out, with images obtained at 24 hours (T3), 48 hours (T4), and 72 hours (T5) after this process. The photoaging was conducted using LED light (700 lumens, 9 W, 6400 k) under controlled environmental conditions at 37°C (±1°C) and 65% (±5%) relative humidity. The digital system DIGORA Optime was used. The digital images were measured using the histogram function, and then the pixel intensity values were converted into mmAl (the standard unit of radiopacity) using a linear regression function, with minimal adjustment of R2 ≥ 0.9. Data in mmAl were statistically analyzed using an analysis of variance (α=0.05). R2 resin composite showed higher values of radiopacity, R1 resin composite showed intermediate values, and R3 resin composite showed lower values. Only at T1 did the higher radiopacity of R2 composite differ significantly from other groups ( p = 0.0000). After application of treatments (photoactivation and photoaging), all radiopacity values were similar ( p-values to T2=0.0507, T3=0.0536, T4=0.0502, T5=0.0501) due to consecutive increase of radiopacity of R1 and R3 composites from T2. Photoactivation and photoaging processes influenced the radiopacity, but changes occurring in the degree of radiopacity were dependent on the composition and chemical characteristics of each composite used.

Abstract
This study investigated the radiopacity values of glass ionomer- and resin-based bulk-fill restoratives of different thicknesses using digital radiography. Two glass ionomer-based and three resin-based bulk-fill restoratives, and a conventional composite were studied. Five disc-shaped specimens were prepared from each of these materials at three different thicknesses; specimens of enamel and dentin with the same thicknesses were also prepared. Materials were placed over a complementary metal oxide-semiconductor sensor together with the tooth specimen and an aluminum step-wedge, and then exposed using a dental X-ray unit. The images were analyzed using a software program to measure the mean gray values (MGVs), which were converted to equivalent aluminum thicknesses. Two-way ANOVA was used to investigate the significance of differences among the groups. The GCP Glass Fill specimens showed the lowest radiopacity values, and the Quixfil specimens had the highest values. All materials had higher radiopacity values than enamel and dentin, except for GCP Glass Fill, which had a radiopacity similar to that of enamel. The resin-based bulk-fill restoratives had significantly higher radiopacity values than glass ionomer-based restoratives. All of the tested materials showed radiopacity values higher than that of dentin, as recommended by the ISO.

Abstract
Background: The radiopacity of composite resins has been considered as an important requirement, improving the radiographic diagnosis. Aim: The present study aimed to compare the radiopacity of eight different composite materials using an aluminum step wedge. Materials and Methods: Eight different composite resins were used in this study. The samples were prepared using a stainless steel mold (2 × 8), and a 2-mm-thickness horizontal section was obtained from the freshly extracted molar tooth. Three different radiographs were taken by establishing standard conditions. Mean gray values were obtained by taking three measurements from each step of both the tooth and the aluminum step wedge, and the aluminum thickness equivalents were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way variance analysis and Tukey's test (P < 0.05). Results: All aluminum thickness equivalents were found to be higher than those of the enamel and dentin, except Clearfil Majesty Esthetic (2.23 mm ± 0.52 mm) and Filtek Silorane (3.67 mm ± 0.15 mm) (P < 0.05). The Clearfil Majesty Posterior (8.50 mm ± 0.10 mm) and Arabesk Top (8.17 mm ± 0.06 mm) were found to be the most radiopaque composites. Conclusion: All composite resin materials tested in this study were confirmed to the International Standards Organization 4049 standards. However, since radiopacity is not the only criterion for clinical use, it is a better approach to take all other properties of the materials into consideration.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the influence of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) addition on the physical and chemical properties of glass ionomer cements (GICs). Materials and methods: Five, 10 or 20 wt.% of Nb2O5 were incorporated into commercial GICs (Maxxion R, Vitro Molar, Vitro Fil R) and one group of each GIC remained without Nb2O5 (control groups). The GICs were evaluated by Knoop hardness, compressive strength, acid erosion, particle size and radiopacity. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test. Results: The addition of 10% and 20% reduced the microhardness of two GICs (p < .05). Compressive strength showed no difference among groups (p > .05). Nb2O5 did not influence Maxxion R and Vitro Fil R regarding the acid erosion test (p > .05). Vitro Molar increased its acid erosion with 10% of Nb2O5 (p < .05). Maxxion R presented 15.78 μm, while Vitro Molar and Vitro Fil R showed 5.14 μm and 6.18 μm, respectively. As the Nb2O5 concentration increased, the radiopacity increased for all groups. Vitro Molar and Vitro Fil R did not present significant difference to at least 1 mm aluminum (p > .05). Conclusion: The addition of 5 wt.% Nb2O5 did not affect the tested physical and chemical properties of the GICs and improved the radiopacity of one of the cements. These materials are therefore suitable for further testing of biomimetic remineralization properties.

Abstract
New flowable composites that may be bulk-filled in layers up to 4 mm are indicated as a base beneath posterior composite restorations. Sufficient radiopacity is one of the several important requirements such materials should meet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiopacity of bulk-fill flowable composites and to provide a comparison with conventional flowable composites using digital imaging. Ten standard specimens (5 mm in diameter, 1 mm in thickness) were prepared from each of four different bulk-fill flowable composites and nine different conventional flowable composites. Radiographs of the specimens were taken together with 1-mm-thick tooth slices and an aluminum step wedge using a digital imaging system. For the radiographic exposures, a storage phosphor plate and a dental x-ray unit at 70 kVp and 8 mA were used. The object-to-focus distance was 30 cm, and the exposure time was 0.2 seconds. The gray values of the materials were measured using the histogram function of the software available with the system, and radiopacity was calculated as the equivalent thickness of aluminum. The data were analyzed statistically (p<0.05). All of the tested bulk-fill flowable composites showed significantly higher radiopacity values in comparison with those of enamel, dentin, and most of the conventional flowable composites (p<0.05). Venus Bulk Fill (Heraeus Kulzer) provided the highest radiopacity value, whereas Arabesk Flow (Voco) showed the lowest. The order of the radiopacity values for the bulk-fill flowable composites was as follows: Venus Bulk Fill (Heraeus Kulzer) ≥ X-tra Base (Voco) > SDR (Dentsply DeTrey) ≥ Filtek Bulk Fill (3M ESPE). To conclude, the bulk-fill flowable restorative materials, which were tested in this study using digital radiography, met the minimum standard of radiopacity specified by the International Standards Organization.

OBJECTIVES To formulate and evaluate new dual cured resin composite based on the inclusion of eugenyl methacrylate monomer (EgMA) with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA resin systems for intracanal post cementation and core build-up restoration of endodontically treated teeth. METHODS EgMA was synthesized and incorporated at 5% (BTEg5) or 10% (BTEg10) into dual-cure formulations. Curing properties, viscosity, Tg, radiopacity, static and dynamic mechanical properties of the composites were determined and compared with Clearfil™DC Core-Plus, a commercial dual-cure, two-component composite. Statistical analysis of the data was performed with ANOVA and the Tukey's post-hoc test. RESULTS The experimental composites were successfully prepared, which exhibited excellent curing depths of 4.9, 4.7 and 4.2 mm for BTEg0, BTEg5 and BTEg10 respectively, which were significantly higher than Clearfil™DC. However, the inclusion of EgMA initially led to a lower degree of cure, which increased when measured at 24 h with values comparable to formulations without EgMA, indicating post-curing. The inclusion of EgMA also lowered the polymerization exotherm thereby reducing the potential of thermal damage to host tissue. Both thermal and viscoelastic analyses confirmed the ability of the monomer to reduce the stiffness of the composites by forming a branched network. The compressive strength of BTEg5 was significantly higher than the control whilst flexural strength increased significantly from 95.9 to 114.8 MPa (BTEg5) and 121.9 MPa (BTEg10). Radiopacity of the composites was equivalent to ∼3 mm Al allowing efficient diagnosis. SIGNIFICANCE The incorporation of EgMA within polymerizable formulations provides a novel approach to prepare reinforced resin composite material for intracanal post cementation and core build-up and the potential to impart antibacterial properties of eugenol to endodontic restorations.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the radiopacity of five post materials using a digital image analysis method. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve specimens from each post type (two zirconia and three fiber based) of 2 mm in thickness were obtained using a diamond blade mounted on a cutting machine, and digital radiographs were taken along with aluminum step-wedge and dentin discs under standard exposure conditions. The mean gray-values of specimens were measured using a computer graphics program. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Holm-Sidak multicomparison test (p = 0.05). RESULTS The highest radiopacity was observed in custom zirconia (5.842 millimeters of equivalent Al [mmAl]), and the lowest value was detected with FRC-Postec (Ivoclar Vivadent) (1.716 mmAl). Significant differences were revealed between the radiopacity values among all groups (p < 0.05), except the Zr post materials (p = 0.56). CONCLUSIONS All tested post materials had higher radiopacity than dentin. Further studies will be required to clarify optimum radiopacity properties of the post materials to provide a precise clinical observation.

Abstract
SUMMARY
This study investigated the radiopacity values of bulk-fill restoratives by using two digital radiography systems. Nine bulk-fill restoratives and a conventional composite were used in the study. Six disc-shaped specimens were prepared from each of these materials, three each at thicknesses of 1 mm and 2 mm, and tooth slices with these same thicknesses were obtained. As a control, an aluminum step wedge varying in thickness from 0.5 to 10 mm in was used. Three specimens of each of the materials, together with the tooth slice and the aluminum step wedge, were placed over a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor and a storage photostimulable phosphor (PPS) plate system and exposed using a dental x-ray unit. The images were analyzed using a software program to measure the mean gray values (MGVs). Five measurements were obtained from each of the restorative materials, the enamel, the dentin, and the stepwedge. The MGVs were converted to the equivalent aluminum thicknesses. Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significance of the differences among the groups. A Tukey test was applied for pairwise comparisons (p<0.05). All composite-based restoratives were found to have greater radiopacities than enamel or dentin. Equia Fil had the lowest radiopacity value. Radiopacity increased as the thicknesses of the restorative material increased. The CMOS system showed significantly higher radiopacity values than the PSP system. In conclusion, all investigated bulk-fill restoratives passed the International Organization for Standardization and American National Standard Institute/American Dental Association requirements for radiopacity values when evaluated with the two digital radiography systems.
