Abstract
BACKGROUND Gum chewing exercise (GCE) is widely used to improve masticatory function in older adults. Nevertheless, it is necessary to develop new therapeutic methods that exert synergistic effects with GCE. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the effects of GCE synchronised with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on masticatory function and mucosal moisture in older adults with sarcopenic dysphagia. METHODS This study enrolled 40 older adults with sarcopenic dysphagia. The participants were randomly assigned to the GCE and GCE plus NMES groups. The GCE group underwent GCE using xylitol gum for 30 min/day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks. The GCE plus NMES group performed GCE with NMES on the upper border of the masseter muscle, below the zygomatic bone in the facial area for 30 min/day, 5 days/week, for 4 weeks. The primary outcome measures were the maximum bite force and masseter muscle thickness. The secondary outcome measure was mucosal moisture on the dorsum of the tongue. RESULTS The GCE plus NMES group showed a significant increase in the maximum bite force, masseter muscle thickness, and saliva secretion compared with the GCE group (p < 0.05, all). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that NMES synchronised with GCE was more effective than GCE alone in improving masticatory function and mucosal moisture in older adults with sarcopenic dysphagia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the repeatability of the surface EMG variables of myoelectric signals from the masseter and temporalis muscles according to three methods to induce maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in healthy adults. METHODS Thirty healthy young subjects performed the following three MVC tasks three times each in three sessions on the same day without replacing surface electrodes: clenching the teeth (MVCIC) and biting down on two cotton rolls bilaterally with the posterior teeth (MVCBP) or first molars (MVCB6). RESULTS The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) of the amplitudes during the three MVC tasks ranged from 65 to 79%. The ICCs of the spectral variables ranged from 78 to 86%. The ICCs of the asymmetry index of the masseter ranged from 77 to 86%, and those of the activity index ranged from 68 to 90%. CONCLUSION The surface EMG measurements according to the three MVC methods exhibited good to excellent reproducibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overerupted maxillary molars is common in adults, which can lead to insufficient intermaxillary vertical space ,great difficulty in prosthetic reconstruction ,and cause occlusal interference in movements.To reconstruct occlusal function, it is necessary to prepare enough space for prostheses. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of space-adjustment occlusal splint on overerupted maxillary molars by clinical and electromyographic signals analysis. METHODS Eighteen patients with overerupted maxillary molars were selected to wear space-adjustment occlusal splint suppressing overerupted maxillary molars for three months. Satisfaction was assessed by 5-point Likert; intermaxillary vertical space and the teeth transportation distance were measured in models; clinical periodontal status were evaluated by periodontal probing depth (PPT) and bleeding index (BI); electromyographic recordings of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles were monitored by Cranio-Mandibular K7 Evaluation System. RESULTS All the patients were satisfied with the treatment effect (Likert scale ≧ 4). The intermaxillary space in edentulous areas after treatment showed statistically significant increasing when compared with those before treatment. PPT and BI showed no significant difference. No statistically significant differences were found in electromyographic activity of anterior temporal muscles, while a reduction of muscle activity in masseter in the contralateral side were detected in post-treatment evaluations compared with pre-treatment at mandibular rest position. CONCLUSIONS Space-adjustment occlusal splint is an efficient treatment option on overerupted maxillary molars by intruding the maxillary molar to obtain adequate intermaxillary space for prostheses.

Abstract
Introduction Changes in breathing patterns affect the harmonious development of the structures of the craniofacial system, leading to changes in posture, occlusion, and facial growth patterns. However, little is known about how these changes influence the muscle contraction patterns, either at rest or while functioning, and either in a normal or unbalanced condition. Objective To study the masseter and anterior temporal muscles fatigue during mastication in nasal- and mouth-breathing children, also considering their facial growth patterns. Methods: A total of 70 children aged 6 to 12 years old who met the study criteria were assessed. Speech-language-hearing, otorhinolaryngologic, and cephalometric assessments were performed to divide them into groups. In the electromyographic assessment, the children were asked to chew gum following a metronome until they felt fatigued. The median frequency of the muscles was analyzed at 15, 30, 45, and 60 seconds of mastication. The reported time of fatigue perception was recorded. The data were analyzed with analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney U tests. Results There were no median frequency decrease patterns nor differences in the myoelectric manifestations and reported time of fatigue between the groups. Conclusion The masticatory muscles did not reveal fatigue in the electromyographic analysis; however, the fatigue time was reported, despite the absence of physiological fatigue. The breathing mode, the facial growth pattern, and the association between them did not interfere with the behavior of the median frequency of the electromyographic signal and the fatigue time perception.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate changes in the masseter muscle after orthognathic surgery using electromyography (EMG), ultrasonography (US), and ultrasound elastography (USE) in individuals with skeletal class III anomaly over long-term follow-up and compare with a control group. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group included 29 patients with class III dentofacial deformities scheduled to undergo orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery. The control group included 20 individuals with dental class I occlusion. Assessment of the masseter muscles using EMG, US, and USE was performed before orthognathic surgery (T1) and at postoperative 3 months (T2) and 1 year (T3) in the study group, and at a single time point in the control group. All assessments were performed at rest and during maximum clenching. Masseter muscle activity, dimension, and hardness were analyzed. RESULTS Electromyographic activity of the masseter muscle during maximum clenching was increased at postoperative 1 year but did not reach control group values. On ultrasonography, the masseter muscle showed minimal changes in dimension at postoperative 1 year compared to preoperative values and remained below control group values. The postoperative increase in masseter muscle hardness at rest and during maximum clenching persisted at postoperative 1 year. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that after orthognathic surgery, additional interventions and much longer follow-up are needed to ensure better muscle adaptation to the new occlusion and skeletal morphology. CLINICAL RELEVANCE All assessment methods are useful for comprehensively evaluating changes in the masticatory muscles after orthognathic surgery.

Abstract
Purpose: Aim of the study is to determine the activity of masseter muscle formed by mastication of different foods in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Material and Methods: 12 women with MS and 12 healthy women were included in the study. 3 grams of hazelnut and chewing gum were given to individuals 20 separate times. Activities of the left and the right masseter muscles during mastication were recorded by using surface electromyography (EMG) device.
Results: Values obtained from healthy women were higher than those obtained from patients with MS for both foods and both sides.
Conclusion: The changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems of the patients affect chewing function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This randomised controlled trial aimed to compare the masticatory function between the silicone-based resilient denture liner and conventional denture among edentulous patients. METHODS The trial included edentulous patients who were willing to have a new set of complete dentures. Participants were randomly assigned to receive mandibular complete dentures with either a 1) conventional denture base (CD group) or (2) silicone-based resilient denture liner (RD group). Masticatory performance (evaluated with gummy jelly) and the maximum occlusal force were measured at baseline, on final adjustment, and at 3 months after the final adjustment. The outcomes were analyzed using two-way mixed analysis of variance and a paired t-test. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS The masticatory performance was lower in the RD group than in the CD group; it increased significantly over time in the CD group, but not in the RD group. The maximum occlusal force in the RD group was significantly higher than that in the CD group; it increased significantly over time in the RD group, but not in the CD group. CONCLUSIONS Silicone-based RD liners applied to mandibular complete dentures are effective in improving the maximum occlusal force but not the masticatory performance, as measured with gummy jelly. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Prior evidence has suggested that mandibular complete dentures with resilient denture liners improve masticatory function. However, the results of this study indicate that difficulties may remain with the mastication of foods with a certain texture (e.g., gummy jelly).

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether geniohyoid and/or masseter muscle mass can predict the severity of dysphagia after salvage surgery for head and neck cancer. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 45 male patients with head and neck cancer (median age, 68 years) who underwent salvage surgery. The preoperative geniohyoid and masseter muscle masses were evaluated using computed tomography and the severity of dysphagia was evaluated by Penetration Aspiration Scale (PAS), Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) and Oropharyngeal swallow efficiency (OPSE). The median PAS, FOIS and OPSE scores after surgery were 7 (interquartile range [IQR] 1–8), 6 (IQR 2–7) and 95.8 (IQR 67.1–116.2), respectively. The mean geniohyoid muscle masses were 3.13 ± 0.78 cm2 and the mean masseter muscle masses were 4.37 ± 0.99 cm2, respectively. The multivariate analysis showed that the geniohyoid muscle mass was significantly associated with the PAS, FOIS and OPSE scores. Conversely, the masseter muscle mass was not significantly associated with the PAS score but was significantly associated with the FOIS and OPSE scores. Geniohyoid muscle mass may predict the severity of dysphagia after salvage surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Masticatory movement occurs complicatedly and bilaterally. Although the tongue plays an important role in mastication, bilateral tongue function during mastication has not been clarified yet. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of food properties on posterior tongue activity and coordination of muscles bilaterally by electromyography (EMG). METHODS Twenty healthy adults (10 males and 10 females; mean age 28 years; range: 22-33 years) participated in this study. Three test foods, gummy jelly (hard food), sponge cake (soft food requiring crushing), and mashed potatoes (soft food not requiring crushing), were used. Bilateral masseter N-EMG (surface electromyography for measuring the muscle activity of posterior tongue) and submental EMG were carried out while the participants chewed three test foods. The participants were instructed to masticate three test foods only on the right side and only on the left side unilaterally. RESULTS In the case of gummy jelly, N-EMG activity on the mastication side was significantly larger than that on the non-mastication side (P < .01). Regarding temporal relationship between the masseter and N-EMG activity, in the case of gummy jelly, the percentage of cases where the N-EMG peak was observed during masseter muscle EMG bursts was significantly higher than those for sponge cake and mashed potatoes (P < .01). CONCLUSION N-EMG activity on the mastication side was significantly larger than that on the non-mastication side in the mastication of hard foods. Tongue showed activity pattern changes and coordinated with the masseter muscle depending on food texture.

Abstract
The maintenance of postural balance can be influenced by the lifestyle of a population. This study aimed to determine the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles during mandibular tasks and habitual and non-habitual chewing in indigenous individuals to reveal the differences among white Brazilian individuals. Sixty Brazilians (18 and 28 years) were divided into two groups: 30 Xingu indigenous individuals and 30 white Brazilian individuals, with 20 men and 10 women in each group. The individuals were assessed using the normalized electromyographic activity of mandibular tasks (rest, protrusion, right and left laterality) and electromyographic activity of masticatory cycles in habitual (peanuts and raisins) and non-habitual (Parafilm M) chewing. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test (p < .05). Comparisons between the groups demonstrated significant differences. Indigenous individuals group presented a decrease in the normalized electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles during mandibular rest [right masseter (p = .002) and left masseter (p = .004) muscles]. There was increase in the normalized electromyographic activity during protrusion [left temporal (p = .03) muscle]. There was increase in the electromyographic activity during chewing: peanuts [right masseter (p = .001), left masseter (p = .001) and right temporal (p = .01) muscles], raisins [right masseter (p = .001), left masseter (p = .002), right temporal (p = .008), left temporal (p = .01) muscles] and Parafilm M [left masseter muscle (p = .05)]. From the findings of this study, we concluded that in the comparison between indigenous and white individuals, positive changes were observed in the electromyographic pattern of the masticatory muscles in the mandibular postural conditions, with greater masticatory efficiency in the indigenous group.

Abstract
The treatment of a complex temporomandibular disorder (TMD), such as disk displacement with reduction (DDR) associated with arthralgia and myalgia, may depends on understanding the impairments in muscle function. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavior of the anterior temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles in the time and frequency domains during chewing in patients with chronic painful TMD-DDR using electromyographic (EMG) analysis. Thirty-three patients who met the diagnostic criteria for TMD and 32 volunteers without TMD (control group) underwent clinical examination, chewing pattern classification and EMG analysis. For the EMG analyses, the side of habitual unilateral chewing, as determined by the chewing pattern classification, was selected for recording; in cases of bilateral chewing, the recording side was randomly selected. The EMG-EMG coherence function and EMG-EMG transfer function (gain and phase) values were obtained at the first chewing frequency peak, and the working-side masseter signal was used as a reference in the analyses of the other muscles. Compared to the control group, the TMD group showed a longer chewing stroke duration (P = 0.01) as well as changes in the coactivation and coordination strategies of the jaw muscles, evidenced by greater relative energy expenditure (P< 0.01) and impaired differential recruitment (P< 0.05) and coherence (P< 0.01). Delays in peak and temporal asynchrony occurred in the jaw and neck muscles (P< 0.05). Patients with chronic painful TMD-DDR during chewing presented changes in the jaw and neck muscles, with more compromised function of the former, which are specific to chewing.
