Abstract
The zygomatic root, along with other key craniofacial features, is hypothesized to play a crucial role in strengthening the face in response to stresses and strains related to feeding. As such, it has been cited as indicative of dietary specialization among fossil taxa, although it remains unknown how variable zygomatic arch root position is among living primates, and whether its positioning predicts differences in diet. We test whether primates that consume more mechanically challenging foods possess more anteriorly positioned zygomatic roots compared to those consuming less challenging foods. Zygomatic root position, as defined by the zygomaxillare landmark, was identified and recorded from digital images and physical specimens of adult primate crania. Data were collected from 33 haplorhine species (n = 722). Published data were used to assign species to a dietary type based on patterns of overall consumption along with reliance on especially challenging foods. Pairwise comparisons between mechanically challenging (hard and/or tough) and less mechanically challenging (soft) consumers found significant differences (p < 0.05) in the position of the zygomatic root in 17 of 20 pairs, 11 of which supported the prediction that a more mechanically challenging diet is associated with a more anteriorly placed zygomatic root. PGLS analysis found no significant effect of phylogeny on root position. This suggests that a more anteriorly positioned zygomatic root is useful for identifying dietary specialization in some taxa but is not required for consuming a mechanically challenging diet given that other craniofacial and behavioral factors can facilitate the consumption of such foods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate myoelectric signals of dystonic activities in oromandibular dystonia (OMD) subjects using surface electromyography (EMG). METHODS Twelve OMD subjects were included in this study. Resting myoelectric activities of the superficial masseter, anterior temporalis, and anterior belly of the digastric muscle on both sides were monitored, and dystonic muscle contractions were recorded using surface EMG. Myoelectric signal amplitude, the type of muscle contraction, and contraction rate for phasic activities were evaluated. RESULTS Surface EMG revealed that eight subjects had dystonic muscle activities in the phasic contraction pattern, three subjects had a tonic contraction pattern, and one subject had a mixed pattern. Synchronous contraction of dystonic muscles was frequently observed. Many of the monitored muscles showed high resting amplitudes. CONCLUSION Surface EMG detects abnormal muscle activities related to oromandibular dystonia. Surface EMG can serve as an objective method for diagnosing oromandibular dystonia.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle fibre architecture provides important insights into performance of vertebrate locomotor and feeding behaviours. Chemical digestion and in situ sectioning of muscle bellies along their lengths to expose fibres, fibre orientation and intramuscular tendon, are two classical methods for estimating architectural variables such as fibre length (Lf ) and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). It has recently been proposed that Lf estimates are systematically shorter and hence less accurate using in situ sectioning. Here we addressed this hypothesis by comparing Lf estimates between the two methods for the superficial masseter and temporalis muscles in a sample of strepsirrhine and platyrrhine primates. Means or single-specimen Lf estimates using chemical digestion were greater in 17/32 comparisons (53.13%), indicating the probability of achieving longer fibres using chemical digestion is no greater than chance in these taxonomic samples. We further explored the impact of sampling on scaling of Lf and PCSA in platyrrhines applying a bootstrapping approach. We found that sampling-both numbers of individuals within species and representation of species across the clade significantly influence scaling results of Lf and PCSA in platyrrhines. We show that intraspecific and clade sampling strategies can account for differences between previously published platyrrhine scaling studies. We suggest that differences in these two methodological approaches to assessing muscle architecture are relatively less consequential when estimating Lf and PCSA for comparative studies, whereas achieving more reliable estimates within species through larger samples and representation of the full clade space are important considerations in comparative studies of fibre architecture and scaling.

Abstract
Solitary myofibroma or infantile myofibroma is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that generally affects infants before the age of 2 years but cases in young children and adults have been described. Although the location of infantile myofibroma in the oral and maxillofacial region has been described, the intramasseteric location of the lesion is very uncommon. A thorough assessment of histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics is necessary to have a correct diagnosis. Treatment relies on surgical resection. In this article, we present a rare clinical case of a 15-year-old patient with a myofibroma of the masseteric muscle and its management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Musculoskeletal pain is a condition that affects bones, muscles, and tendons and is present in various diseases and/or clinical conditions. This type of pain represents a growing problem with enormous socioeconomic impacts, highlighting the importance of developing treatments tailored to the patient's needs. TRP is a large family of non-selective cation channels involved in pain perception. Vanilloid (TRPV1 and TRPV4), ankyrin (TRPA1), and melastatin (TRPM8) are involved in physiological functions, including nociception, mediation of neuropeptide release, heat/cold sensing, and mechanical sensation. OBJECTIVE In this context, we provide an updated view of the most studied preclinical models of muscle hyperalgesia and the role of transient receptor potential (TRP) in these models. METHODS This review describes preclinical models of muscle hyperalgesia induced by intramuscular administration of algogenic substances and/or induction of muscle damage by physical exercise in the masseter, gastrocnemius, and tibial muscles. RESULTS The participation of TRPV1, TRPA1, and TRPV4 in different models of musculoskeletal pain was evaluated using pharmacological and genetic tools. All the studies detected the antinociceptive effect of respective antagonists or reduced nociception in knockout mice. CONCLUSION Hence, TRPV1, TRPV4, and TRPA1 blockers could potentially be utilized in the future for inducing analgesia in muscle hypersensitivity pathologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Botulinum toxin has been widely and mainly used for the treatment of conditions affecting the upper and middle face; however, recent efforts have expanded the indications of botulinum toxin injection to the lower face and neck areas for cosmetic and medical purposes. AIMS We have reviewed the latest updates on using botulinum toxin in the lower face and neck focusing on cosmetic purposes and have discussed the existing concerns as well as the adverse sequelae of these newer indications. PATIENTS/METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed using the following keywords [[botulinum] AND [[Toxin] OR [Neurotoxin]]] AND [[Lower AND Face] AND/OR [Neck]] within the main databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Embase and gray literature on and before February 2023. The data were screened using titles and abstracts and those relevant to the topic were included in the paper. RESULTS Botulinum toxin injection has considerable cosmetic and therapeutic effect on facial contouring, masseteric hypertrophy, lower face and neck scars, gummy smile, drooping lip corner and even skin rejuvenation. CONCLUSION BNT injection has been widely used for the treatment of different medical and cosmetic purposes. Low rates of side effects, which were self-limited in most cases, have been reported in the literature, making BNT a safe therapeutic medication in most cases. However, regulatory status needs to be updated and more accurately revised in many countries and more comprehensive research is required to address the existing gaps in this area including the site, dosage, and method of injection in each case.

Abstract
Purpose The study aimed to determine the muscle pattern of medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, and masseter (length, cross-section, and angulation) in adult non-orthodontic patients and its effect on craniofacial structures. Methods The study was conducted from January 14, 2019 to January 14, 2020. Ethical clearance of this study was obtained from the ethical committee Ethical Clearance was obtained from Faculty of Dental Sciences, IMS, BHU, Institutional Ethical Committee with Ref no. Dean/2019/EC/1824 dated 23.04.2019 of the university. The sample size was estimated using the G-power statistical program. Power analysis indicated a minimum sample size of 27. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were set. Consent was taken from participants. Seventy-seven subjects who were willing to participate and have given written consent were enrolled for the study. Participants were sent for lateral cephalometry (Dolphin Cephalometric software) Dolphin Imaging and management solution, for 6 angular and 11 linear measurements. Nineteen subjects did not turn up for the scan. Twenty-eight participants underwent MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to evaluate muscle patterns (masseter, medial, and lateral pterygoid). The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression analysis were computed. The P value was set as ≤0.001(highly statistically significant) and ≤0.05 (significant relation). Results There was a highly statistically significant (p ≤ 0.001) association between masseter length to upper facial height (N-Ans) and ramal length (Cd-Go). Length of medial pterygoid was significantly related (p ≤ 0.05) with SNB and length of body of mandible (Pog-Go). The cross-section of this muscle showed significant relation with upper facial height (N-Ans) and ramal length (Cd-Go). The correlation of the length of lateral pterygoid with upper facial height (N-Ans) and maxillary length (A-Ptm) was highly significant. Conclusion The muscle pattern has a significant correlation with maxillofacial morphology. The masseter muscle is the longest and thickest (cross-section) and is angulated vertically than the other two muscles (medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid). Of the three muscles, the medial pterygoid influences more common craniofacial parameters suggestive of its symbiotic activity. Lateral pterygoid affects the maxillary length and facial height.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of our polyneural, zone-based reanimation approach for patients with neoplasm-induced facial paralysis. METHODS A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent facial reanimation surgery using multiple donor nerve transfers was undertaken. In each case, the selection of donor nerves was based on the availability of donor nerve and the viability of the motor endplate on the affected side. Sources of the neural inputs utilized included the remnant facial nerve stump, masseteric nerve, partial hypoglossal nerve, and branches of the contralateral facial nerve. Clinical outcomes were scored by expert raters. Ratings were undertaken using the modified House-Brackmann, eFACE and MEEI FACEgram scoring systems. RESULTS Between 2017 and 2020, 12 patients were included in the study (mean age 60 years; range 26-81 years). Eight patients (67%) achieved a grade III outcome on the modified House-Brackmann grading scale. Mean eFACE static and dynamic scores were 76 and 57 respectively, reflecting a high degree of symmetry at rest and moderate restoration of dynamic movement. Mean time to movement was 5.4 months (SD 1.9). Objective FACE-gram measurements confirmed restoration of midface movement with an average improvement in smile excursion and mouth angle excursion of 3.19 mm (SD 3.18) and 4.81° (SD 2.90) respectively. CONCLUSION Facial reanimation using multiple nerve transfers is effective in achieving improvements in facial function and symmetry.

Abstract
Context: A comprehensive meta-analysis was carried out to investigate the impact of orthodontics on masticatory muscles.Methods: A thorough search of various databases, including CNKI, Wan Fang, VIP, CBM, MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, was performed to identify relevant studies on patients undergoing orthodontics or functional corrections. Six case-control studies were finally included in this analysis, which specifically examined the effect of orthodontic treatment on masticatory muscle function.Results: The results revealed that the mean masticatory muscle voltage in patients treated with orthodontics was found to be higher after treatment compared to before treatment [odds ratio (OR)=1.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.57, 2.57), p = 0.002], which could potentially have an impact on masticatory muscle function, particularly in individuals with Class II Division 1 malocclusion.Conclusion: These findings contribute to our understanding of the effects of orthodontic interventions on masticatory muscles, further highlighting the importance of orthodontics in optimising masticatory function.

Abstract
Introduction Masseter hypertrophy presents as unilateral or bilateral swellings over the ramus and angle of the mandible. It is caused by malocclusion, clenching, TMJ disorders, etc and alters facial symmetry, leading to discomfort and negative cosmetic impact in many patients, making this a popular request for aesthetic and functional correction. Materials and Methods This case report involves injecting Botulinum toxin into 6 equidistant bulging points on the masseter. Standardized photography and clinical parameters were used to assess facial contour and masseter muscle thickness at baseline and successive follow ups. Results and Discussion Significant masseteric bulk reduction was observed in subsequent follow ups. Conclusion The 6-point technique was found to be an effective treatment modality for Botox injection in masseteric hypertrophy. The clinical method to quantify prognosis was easy and economical.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the normal range of masseter muscle thickness by ultrasonographic measurement in individuals over 15 years of age, and to evaluate its relationship with age, gender, facial morphology, body mass index and parafunctional habits. METHODS The study was conducted on 115 volunteers whose lateral cephalometric radiography was performed within the indication in Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. The participants in the study were asked questions about their parafunctional habits, age, height and weight. Individuals were grouped as hypodivergent (n = 28), normdivergent (n = 55), or hyperdivergent (n = 32) according to vertical face morphology by making measurements on lateral cephalometric films. Right and left masseter muscle thicknesses of individuals were measured by ultrasonography while at rest and in contraction. RESULTS The mean value of masseter muscle thickness was found to be 13.57 ± 2.57 mm. The rest and contracted muscle thicknesses were significantly higher in males than in females for the right and left masseter muscles (p < 0.05). When the masseter muscle was at rest and contracted, its thickness was higher in individuals with hypodivergent facial morphology, than in the other groups. No statistically significant difference was found in terms of masseter muscle thickness between individuals having parafunctional habits and those who did not have parafunctional habits (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Although masseter muscle thickness varied according to vertical facial morphology, this was not the case for parafunctional habits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the repeatability of the surface EMG variables of myoelectric signals from the masseter and temporalis muscles according to three methods to induce maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in healthy adults. METHODS Thirty healthy young subjects performed the following three MVC tasks three times each in three sessions on the same day without replacing surface electrodes: clenching the teeth (MVCIC) and biting down on two cotton rolls bilaterally with the posterior teeth (MVCBP) or first molars (MVCB6). RESULTS The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) of the amplitudes during the three MVC tasks ranged from 65 to 79%. The ICCs of the spectral variables ranged from 78 to 86%. The ICCs of the asymmetry index of the masseter ranged from 77 to 86%, and those of the activity index ranged from 68 to 90%. CONCLUSION The surface EMG measurements according to the three MVC methods exhibited good to excellent reproducibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection is a popular cosmetic procedure in East Asian countries, and there are multiple types of toxins on the market. Whether different toxin types induce different changes in the masseter has not been studied. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate and compare the changes induced by injection of different types of BoNT-A in the masseter. METHODS Upon retrospective review of clinical records and routine ultrasound examination results of patients who underwent BoNT-A injection, four groups were set for comparison: unapproved toxin, OnabotulinumtoxinA, LanbotulinumtoxinA, and non-injected. Clinical records and ultrasound images were collected. Ultrasound images were taken in both horizontal and coronal planes. Elasticity of the masseter muscle was also investigated by measuring the surface wave speed. RESULTS A total of 24 patients were included (six patients per group). All patients were young females. For the non-injected group, the deep inferior tendon was clear and the muscle bundles were arranged, with little fibrous content. Patients who received unapproved toxin injection showed highly disarranged muscle and fiber bundles, with much fiber content present. The changes in OnabotulinumtoxinA and LanbotulinumtoxinA groups were in between those in the non-injected and unapproved toxin groups. Muscle rigidity was the highest in the unapproved toxin group, and generally higher in injected groups compared with the non-injected group. CONCLUSION Different types of BoNT-A may induce different changes in the masseter.

Abstract
A 12-year-old female with a history of multicentric infantile myofibromatosis (IM) presented with a tender, enlarging cheek mass and trismus. Imaging identified an intramasseteric tumor. Given the unknown etiology of the tumor and her bothersome symptoms, the mass was excised using a transoral approach with concurrent facial nerve monitoring. Her pathology report confirmed the diagnosis of a myofibromatosis lesion embedded within the masseter muscle. While IM can often present with lesions in the head and neck region, the intramasseteric location is rare and presents unique considerations for surgical approach. Myofibromatosis lesions typically occur before two years of age, although there are some rare documented cases of multicentric myofibromatosis lesions presenting at older ages. Furthermore, this patient's family history of similar lesions suggests a familial variant, which may have implications for disease behavior and need for further work-up, monitoring, and management. Overall, this was an unusual presentation of IM given the patient's age, prevalent family history, and the location of the mass. This case report adds to the literature and discusses the clinical differential of a pediatric cheek mass, the surgical considerations for an intramasseteric tumor, and the natural history of infantile myofibromatosis.

Abstract
(1) Background: Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection is an esthetically effective and safe treatment for contouring the lower face. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of BoNT and supplementary oral appliance (OA) therapy on lower facial contouring. (2) Methods: We conducted a prospective randomized controlled trial from January 2015 to June 2016 at the Yonsei University Dental Hospital. Volunteers aged 20−45 years with masseter hypertrophy were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the non-OA group and the OA group. The non-OA group received BoNT injections alone, whereas the OA group received an OA in addition to BoNT injections. Changes in the bulkiest height of the lower face were evaluated by three-dimensional laser scanning before and 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks after injections in both groups. (3) Results: In both groups, the bulkiest height reductions decreased, with a significant interaction between group (p = 0.046) and time (p < 0.001), although the overall reduction was at a similar level at 24 weeks. (4) Conclusions: The pattern of the bulkiest height reduction of the lower face after BoNT injection differed between standalone treatment and OA therapy, implying a normalizing effect of OA on masseter muscle activity.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the short-term effects of a standardized first-line noninvasive approach (FL-A) including counseling and self-management strategies on pain, masticatory muscle tenderness, and awake bruxism in women with chronic temporomandibular disorder myalgia (mTMD) and to test whether patients' trait anxiety predicted their response to treatment. METHODS FL-A was administered to 14 women with chronic mTMD (mean age ± SD = 33.8 ± 11.1 years; 8 with Graded Chronic Pain Scale [GCPS] grade I and 6 with grade II). Its effects on facial pain, masticatory muscle tenderness, and spontaneous awake bruxism episodes were evaluated using questionnaires, surface electromyography, and quantitative sensory testing. General linear models were used to test FL-A efficacy after 1 (T1) and 2 (T2) months. RESULTS FL-A reduced pain (from baseline [T0] to T2, P = .010), the frequency of awake bruxism episodes (T0 to T1, P = .024), and their intensity by about 30% (T0 to T1, P < .001). Pressure pain thresholds at the masticatory muscle locations increased significantly from T0 to T2 (P < .001). Patients' trait anxiety decreased significantly from T0 to T2 (P = .030). Trait anxiety measured at baseline was not correlated with relative changes in pain (T0 to T2, P = .248). CONCLUSION In the short term, FL-A reduces facial pain, masticatory muscle tenderness, and awake bruxism in women with chronic mTMD with low disability. A conservative management strategy should be prioritized for the initial management of these patients.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep bruxism is characterized by rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA). This study aimed to determine the number and type of jaw muscles needed for a valid RMMA scoring in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS 10 individuals with OSA (4 males; age = 50.1 ± 8.1 years) were included in this study. RMMA was scored using one or more of the following jaw muscles' electromyography (EMG) traces of polysomnography recordings: bilateral masseter and temporalis (4MT; the reference standard), unilateral masseter (1M), bilateral masseter (2M), unilateral temporalis (1T), bilateral temporalis (2T), unilateral chin EMG (1C), and bilateral chin EMG (2C). RESULTS 1M, 2M, 1T, and 2T showed excellent agreement with 4MT (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.751, 0.976, 0.815, and 0.950, respectively), while 1C and 2C presented fair agreement (ICC= 0.662 and 0.657). Besides, 2M and 2T displayed good sensitivity (87.8% and 72.0%) and positive predictive value (PPV; 83.1% and 76.0%). In contrast, 1M and 1T had good sensitivity (88.4% and 87.8%) but fair PPV (60.1% and 53.2%). 1C and 2C showed poor sensitivity (41.1% and 40.3%) and fair PPV (62.9% and 60.6%). CONCLUSIONS Polysomnography with bilateral masseter or temporalis muscle EMG traces is regarded valid in RMMA scoring in individuals with OSA. In contrast, unilateral masseter or temporalis muscle EMG showed only fair accuracy, and chin EMG had poor accuracy. Consequently, these montages cannot be recommended for RMMA scoring in the presence of OSA. Abstract
Numerous anthropological studies have been aimed at estimating jaw-adductor muscle forces, which, in turn, are used to estimate bite force. While primate jaw adductors show considerable intra- and intermuscular heterogeneity in fibre types, studies generally model jaw-muscle forces by treating the jaw adductors as either homogeneously slow or homogeneously fast muscles. Here, we provide a novel extension of such studies by integrating fibre architecture, fibre types and fibre-specific tensions to estimate maximum muscle forces in the masseter and temporalis of five anthropoid primates: Sapajus apella (N = 3), Cercocebus atys (N = 4), Macaca fascicularis (N = 3), Gorilla gorilla (N = 1) and Pan troglodytes (N = 2). We calculated maximum muscle forces by proportionally adjusting muscle physiological cross-sectional areas by their fibre types and associated specific tensions. Our results show that the jaw adductors of our sample ubiquitously express MHC α-cardiac, which has low specific tension, and hybrid fibres. We find that treating the jaw adductors as either homogeneously slow or fast muscles potentially overestimates average maximum muscle forces by as much as approximately 44%. Including fibre types and their specific tensions is thus likely to improve jaw-muscle and bite force estimates in primates.

Abstract
In children, the quality and muscle function are altered in many pathologic conditions, including temporomandibular disorders. Although several methods have been used to evaluate muscle tonus, none became a golden standard. Moreover, the masseter muscle characteristics in children have not been investigated to date. This study aimed to measure the stiffness of the masseter muscle using shear-wave elastography in healthy children. We enrolled 30 healthy children (mean age 10.87 ± 3.38 years). The stiffness of masseter muscles was measured with shear wave elastography. Stiffness for the total sample was 6.37 ± 0.77 kPa. A comparison of the measurements did not show significant differences between the right and the left masseter muscles (left—6.47 ± 0.78 kPa; right—6.24 ± 0.76 kPa; p = 0.3546). A significant difference was seen between boys and girls (boys—5.94 ± 0.50 kPa; girls—6.63 ± 0.80; p = 0.0006). Shear-wave elastography is a promising diagnostic tool. It may help to detect changes in the stiffness of the masseter muscle and draw attention to pathological processes within the jaw muscles. Directions for further research shall include determining stiffness values in pathological conditions and the impact of biological and functional factors on the stiffness of the masseter muscle.

Abstract
In carnivorans, bite force is a critical and ecologically informative variable that has been correlated with multiple morphological, behavioral, and environmental attributes. Whereas in vivo measures of biting performance are difficult to obtain in many taxa-and impossible in extinct species-numerous osteological proxies exist for estimating masticatory muscle size and force. These proxies include both volumetric approximations of muscle dimensions and direct measurements of muscular attachment sites. In this study, we compare three cranial osteological techniques for estimating muscle size (including 2D-photographic and 3D-surface data approaches) against dissection-derived muscle weights and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) within the jaw adductor musculature of 40 carnivoran taxa spanning eight families, four orders of magnitude in body size, and the full dietary spectrum of the order. Our results indicate that 3D-approaches provide more accurate estimates of muscle size than do surfaces measured from 2D-lateral photographs. However, estimates of a muscle's maximum cross-sectional area are more closely correlated with muscle mass and PCSA than any estimates derived from muscle attachment areas. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for muscle thickness in osteological estimations of the masticatory musculature; as muscles become volumetrically larger, their larger cross-sectional area does not appear to be associated with a proportional increase in the attachment site area. Though volumetric approaches approximate muscle dimensions well across the order as a whole, caution should be exercised when applying any single method as a predictor across diverse phylogenies.

Abstract
Networks linking single genes to multiple phenotypic outcomes can be founded on local anatomical interactions as well as on systemic factors like biochemical products. Here we explore the effects of such interactions by investigating the competing spatial demands of brain and masticatory muscle growth within the hypermuscular myostatin-deficient mouse model and in computational simulations. Mice that lacked both copies of the myostatin gene (-/-) and display gross hypermuscularity, and control mice that had both copies of the myostatin gene (+/+) were sampled at 1, 7, 14 and 28 postnatal days. A total of 48 mice were imaged with standard as well as contrast-enhanced microCT. Size metrics and landmark configurations were collected from the image data and were analysed alongside in silico models of tissue expansion. Findings revealed that: masseter muscle volume was smaller in -/- mice at day 1 but became, and remained thereafter, larger by 7 days; -/- endocranial volumes begin and remained smaller; -/- enlargement of the masticatory muscles was associated with caudolateral displacement of the calvarium, lateral displacement of the zygomatic arches, and slight dorsal deflection of the face and basicranium. Simulations revealed basicranial retroflexion (flattening) and dorsal deflection of the face associated with muscle expansion and abrogative covariations of basicranial flexion and ventral facial deflection associated with endocranial expansion. Our findings support the spatial-packing theory and highlight the importance of understanding the harmony of competing spatial demands that can shape and maintain mammalian skull architecture during ontogeny.

Abstract
The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the short-term effectiveness of two different occlusal devices and their impact on the pressure pain threshold (PPT) values among patients who reported to the Dental Prosthetics Outpatient Clinic of Pomeranian Medical University (Szczecin, Poland) and who were diagnosed with probable bruxism. Two groups were formed (A and B) to which patients were assigned randomly. Each group used a different occlusal splint for bruxism management. The occlusal appliance by Okeson, or the bimaxillary splint, was used overnight by each patient for 30 days of the study. The PPT was measured twice, at the first visit and after 30 days of using each occlusal device, with Wagner Paintest FPX 25 algometer. Bruxism was diagnosed based on data from the patient's medical history and from the physical examination. Nocturnal Bruxism Criteria according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (Third Edition) was used for the patient's evaluation. Results: similar pain factor (PF) reduction was observed in both the examined groups, regardless of the device used; canine guidance and no guidance were similarly effective in terms of increasing pain resilience.

We report a case of a 59-year-old woman who presented with swelling of the right cheek. CT Scan showed three calculi located anteromedial to the masseter, and well isolated from other major salivary glands. Calculi were surgically removed with standard intraoral incision and exploration.

Abstract
AbobotulinumtoxinA (aboBoNT-A) has been used for various cosmetic purposes, including minimization of moderate to severe lines, or other cosmetic indications, in the face and neck. We carried out a systematic review to identify all relevant evidence on the treatment approaches and outcomes of aboBoNT-A as a cosmetic treatment of the middle and lower areas of the face, and the neck. Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, congress proceedings and review bibliographies were searched for relevant studies. Identified articles were screened against pre-specified eligibility criteria. Of 560 unique articles identified, 10 were included for data extraction (three observational studies, 1 randomized controlled trial [with two articles] and five non-randomized trials). The articles provided data on gummy/asymmetric smile (2), marionette lines (5), masseter muscle volume (2), nasal wrinkles (2), perioral wrinkles (3) and the platysma muscle (4). All articles reporting on efficacy of aboBoNT-A demonstrated positive results, including reduction of wrinkles (5), reduction of masseter muscle (2) and degree of gummy smile (1) compared with before treatment. No serious adverse events were reported and patient satisfaction was high. In conclusion, positive findings support further research of aboBoNT-A for the middle and lower areas of the face, and in the neck, which are largely unapproved indications.

Abstract
Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a genetic metabolic disorder often involving dystonia and self-mutilating behavior. This case report describes a 13-year-old boy with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome and self-mutilating behavior who received botulinum toxin injections to his bilateral masseter muscles after failing multiple other treatments. Following injections, the patient had reduction in self-biting, along with improvements in speech, mastication and feeding observed in speech therapy. Botulinum toxin injections to the masseters may help to improve oromotor function and reduce self-mutilating behaviors in children with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome who have failed more conservative treatments, providing opportunity for improved functional status and patient safety. Further investigation is indicated to establish optimal dosing. Additionally, the mechanism for the reduction of self-mutilating behavior is unclear and justifies additional investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is based on patient history and physical examination, and may require medical imaging. Masticatory muscle palpation is essential to make a diagnosis of TMD. However, the response of masticatory muscles to mechanical pressure stimuli depends on many physical and psychological factors. OBJECTIVE This study aimed at determining the impact of somatosensory amplification (SSA)-an estimate of somatic awareness and bodily hypervigilance-on pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) measured at both trigeminal and extra-trigeminal locations in healthy individuals. METHODS PPTs were measured at the right anterior temporalis and superficial masseter, and the thenar eminence of the right hand in one hundred healhty individuals (69F, 31M), divided in three groups based on their SSA scores: low (N = 32), intermediate (N = 34) and high (N = 34). General linear models were used to test between-group differences in PPTs including sex as a covariate. The level of significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS Individuals with high SSA had lower PPTs at the anterior temporalis than individuals with low (P = .006) and intermediate (P = .001) SSA. No significant between-group differences were found in PPTs measured at the masseter (P = .372). PPTs measured at the thenar eminence were significantly lower in the high than the low SSA group (P = .009). Females had lower PPTs at the masseter than males (P = .021) but not at other muscle locations (all P > .05). CONCLUSION Increased somatosensory amplification is associated with decreased pressure pain thresholds at both trigeminal and extra-trigeminal locations in healthy individuals. SSA could be a potential confounder while diagnosing TMD and evaluating treatment outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk factors neck muscle tension, prolonged jaw opening, and female gender are associated with developing temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which are characterized by persistent sensitization of trigeminal neurons and enhanced pain signaling. Dietary supplementation with a grape seed extract (GSE) can modulate expression of proteins that decrease neuronal excitability and trigeminal sensitization. METHODS Mechanical nocifensive thresholds over the masseter were determined using von Frey filaments in male and female adult Sprague Dawley rats. To promote trigeminal sensitization, animals were injected with complete Freund's adjuvant in the upper trapezius. After 8 days, animals were subjected to near maximal jaw opening and head withdrawal responses were determined for 28 days. Some animals received continuous supplementation with 0.5% GSE in their drinking water two weeks prior to trapezius injections. RESULTS Prolonged jaw opening increased the average number of nocifensive responses to mechanical stimuli for 14 days in males and females. However, trapezius inflammation prior to jaw opening promoted persistent mechanical sensitivity up to 28 days post-jaw opening in females, while in males nociceptive levels were still elevated at day 21. Supplementation with GSE, which is enriched in polyphenols and exhibits antioxidant and COX-2 activity, inhibited trigeminal nociception in response to jaw opening in both male and female sensitized animals. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide evidence that multiple risk factors contribute to the development of a prolonged state of trigeminal sensitization that is more severe in females and provide preclinical evidence that supplementation with GSE could be beneficial in the management of TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most prevalent primary headache type world-wide. Chronic TTH (CTTH) of >15 headache-affected days per month for > 3 months can cause considerable pain and disability. PURPOSE This case series aimed to investigate whether massage therapy interventions were more effective when muscles of the anterior neck, jaw, and cranium were included. DESIGN Four female clients suffering CTTH received six pre-determined massage therapy interventions, 45 minutes each, over three weeks. Case A and B (exclusion cases) received interventions addressing shoulder, posterior neck, and occiput muscles; Case C and D (inclusions cases) received interventions addressing the same areas as well as the sternocleidomastoid, scalene, temporalis, and masseter muscles. INTERVENTION Treatment included myofascial trigger point release, neuromuscular therapy, and consideration of central sensitization mechanisms present in CTTH. OUTCOME MEASURES Headache frequency (primary), intensity, and duration (secondary) were recorded via headache diaries for baseline measures (one week), interventions (three weeks), and a runout period (two weeks). Secondary measures also included a headache disability inventory (HDI) at baseline, intervention conclusion, and final measures. After final measures, clients received stretching education and four weeks later, a follow-up phone conversation to note subjective headache reports. RESULTS All cases had headache frequency and HDI score reductions, while intensity and duration measures fluctuated. At final measures, exclusion Case A and both inclusion cases (C and D) had headache frequency reductions to below CTTH diagnostic criteria, clinically meaningful (> 16%) HDI score reductions, and subjectively reported continued improvements after study completion. Inclusion cases overall had greater decreases in headache frequency and HDI measures. CONCLUSION Comparative results suggest there may be additional benefit in reducing headache frequency and disability with inclusion of anterior neck, jaw, and cranial muscles in treatment strategies of CTTH. However, limited sample size makes it difficult to rule out outliers or individual variables. Further investigation is recommended.

The aim of the present study is to report a TMCO case after direct masseter muscle injury and correlate it to bone and cartilage biomarkers up-regulation. Caucasian male patient, 38 years old, seeks treatment nine days after trauma with severe mouth opening limitation. Physical examination revealed a circumscribed hardened area connected to masseter muscle on the left side. Cone beam tomography and ultrasonography of masseter region were requested. There was incomplete fracture between the posterior board of inferior jaw and coronoid process as well as calcification within masseter muscle. The proposed treatment was excisional biopsy of calcification, coronoid process removal to enhance mouth opening as well as incomplete condyle fracture monitoring. Material removed was sent for histological analysis in order to confirm diagnosis. Immuhistochemistry was conducted and it was found that chondro-ossification biomarkers such as TGF-b1, Indian Hegdehog (IHH), BMP2, osteopontin (OP) and osteocalcin (OC) were up-regulated. One-year follow-up showed that the patient is stable with increased mouth opening and satisfactory jaw movements. Pathologists and maxillofacial surgeons must be aware of differential diagnosis of TMCO. Understanding cellular mechanisms of muscle tissue after trauma is also important once cellular pathway modifications leads to clinical features that differ from previously described in literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate whether sleep deprivation (SD) induces inflammation, autophagy and myogenesis in the following masticatory muscles: masseter and temporal. METHODS In this study, 18 animals were randomly distributed into three groups: control group (CTL, n = 6), SD for 96 hours (SD96, n = 6), and SD for 96 hours and more 96 hours of sleep recovery (SD96 + R, n = 6). RESULTS In the histopathological analysis, SD 96 was able to induce inflammation in masseter and temporal. Nevertheless, the lack of inflammatory process was evidenced to the masseter in the group SD96 + R. Upregulation of TNF-alpha production was detected in the SD96 group, while SD96 + R decreased TNF immunoexpression for both skeletal muscles evaluated. MyoD and myogenin increased in rats submitted to SD96. By contrast, the levels of MyoD decreased in the group SD96 + R. Myogenin pointed out high immunoexpression in SD96 + R groups. In temporal, pAkt decreased in animals submitted to SD96, but it increased in the group SD96 + R. The levels of LC3 protein increased in both skeletal muscles studied, and masseter decreased LC3 protein expression in the SD96 + R. CONCLUSION In summary, our results demonstrate that SD is able to induce inflammation, atrophy and myogenesis in rat masticatory muscles, being more intense in temporal when compared to masseter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The motor root of the trigeminal nerve runs close to the sensory root and receives considerable radiation during Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The object of this study was to evaluate via MRI the changes in the muscles of mastication before and after upfront GKRS in patients with idiopathic TN. METHODS In this single-institution retrospective cohort study, all patients with idiopathic unilateral TN treated with primary GKRS at the University of Virginia in the period from 2007 to 2017 were included provided that they had pre- and post-GKRS MRI data. The thicknesses of the temporalis, pterygoid, and masseter muscles were measured on both pre- and post-GKRS MRI in a blinded fashion. Changes in the muscles like fatty infiltration, MRI signal, or atrophy were noted. RESULTS Among the 68 patients eligible for inclusion in the study, 136 temporalis muscles, 136 medial pterygoid muscles, 136 lateral pterygoid muscles, and 136 masseter muscles were assessed. A subset of patients was found to have muscle atrophy even prior to GKRS. Pre-GKRS atrophy of the masseter, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, and temporalis muscles was seen in 18 (26%), 16 (24%), 9 (13%), and 16 (24%) patients, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that distribution of pain in the V3 territory (p = 0.01, OR 5.43, 95% CI 1.46-20.12) and significant pain on chewing (p = 0.02, OR 5.32, 95% CI 1.25-22.48) were predictive of pre-GKRS atrophy. Reversal of atrophy of these muscles occurred after GKRS in a majority of the patients. The incidence of new-onset permanent post-GKRS muscle atrophy was 1.5%. The median follow-up was 39 months (range 6-108 months). CONCLUSIONS A subset of patients with TN with significant pain on chewing have pre-GKRS disuse atrophy of the muscles of mastication. A reversal of the atrophy occurs in a majority of the patients following GKRS. New-onset motor neuropathy post-GKRS was rare.

Abstract
It is unclear whether the deep inferior tendon (DIT) is equally present in vivo, and little anatomical information is available regarding the existence and morphology of the DIT in healthy young subjects. The aim of this study was to characterize the DIT of the masseter muscle in healthy young subjects using ultrasonography and to compare the morphology of this tendon with previously reported data for healthy young subjects in order to provide the most-effective injection methods for botulinum neurotoxin treatments of masseteric hypertrophy. This study investigated two fresh cadavers and 30 healthy subjects. Ultrasonography scanning in both longitudinal and transverse directions was applied to the masseter muscle. The DIT within the superficial part of the masseter was observed in both the fresh cadavers and the living subjects. The posterior region of the masseter muscle was compartmentalized (entirely covered) by the DIT in 26.7% of the specimens. The superficial part of the masseter muscle was divided by the DIT transversely and longitudinally into the superficial and deep muscle bellies in 35% and 38.3% of the specimens, respectively. The present findings suggest applying a DIT-based injection technique under guidance by ultrasonography prior to treating masseteric hypertrophy. Clin. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This randomized, single-center clinical trial aimed to compare the efficacy of superficial dry needling (SDN) and deep dry needling (DDN) in patients with myofascial temporomandibular disorder (MTMD) related to the masseter muscle.Methods: Forty patients showing MTMD with trigger points in the masseter muscle were randomly assigned to groups. Dry needling of the masseter muscle was performed once per week for three weeks. Pressure pain threshold (PPT) measurements, visual analog scale scores, and maximal jaw opening were assessed.Results: Both patient groups showed significant pain reduction, but the SDN group showed significantly better pain reduction. The PPT measurements obtained in the follow-up examinations at three and six weeks were significantly better than the values in SDN and DDN groups.Discussion: SDN showed better pain-reduction efficacy in patients with MTMD. Further research with a larger size sample and a longer follow-up period will help elucidate the benefits of SDN.

Abstract
Intramuscular vascular malformations are rare tumours occurring in less than 1% of skeletal muscles throughout the body, about 15% arising in the head and neck. Of these, lymphatic malformations are encountered to a lesser extent, being common in the tongue and the masseter being very rare. We present a case report of a lymphatic malformation of the masseter muscle in a 27 year old male. He presented with a swelling on his right cheek that had developed 1 year ago. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the lesion and Computed Tomography (CT) scans were done following which the provisional diagnosis of lymphatic malformation in the masseter was made. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed subsequently and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. It is very rare to find a lymphatic malformation in the masseter and with such late presentation. Follow up should be done to note for potential recurrence.

Abstract
This issue of the Anatomical Record is the first of a two-volume set that focuses on new investigations into behavioral correlates of muscle functional morphology. Much of the research on functional morphology and adaptation to specific functional niches focuses on the shapes of hard-tissues-bones and teeth. Investigations into soft-tissue anatomy tend to be predominantly descriptive with only brief allusion to ontogenetic or evolutionary origins of structures. When muscles are included in analyses of functional systems, their function tends to be oversimplified-usually considered a simple force vector connecting two osteological points, with the force treated as a constant derived from some simple calculation of muscle size. The goal of these special issues is to present a series of studies that take a more elaborate look at how muscles can be viewed from a functional perspective in studies searching for morphological correlates of behavior. This first volume focuses on the behavioral correlates of cranial muscles-starting with a paper about the mimetic musculature of primates and ending with a series of papers on the masticatory muscles of many lineages of vertebrates. The next issue of the Anatomical Record (March 2018) includes our papers on the behavioral correlates of postcranial muscles. Taken together, we hope you agree that this series presents valuable insights into these form/function relationships using both traditional approaches+ and cutting-edge techniques. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This placebo-controlled randomized double-blinded clinical study assessed the analgesic efficacy of intramuscular morphine in TMD patients with myofascial pain and sex-dependent responses of the morphine treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Men and women with TMD were treated with morphine (1.5 or 5 mg), lidocaine, or saline in the masseter muscle. VAS of pain intensity, PPT, and PPtol were compared between treatment groups and gender. An additional group was treated with morphine in the trapezius muscle to evaluate the systemic effect of morphine that may reduce pain in the masseter muscle. RESULTS There was a significant difference in VAS scores between the morphine 5 mg group and the saline group favoring morphine, but not between the morphine 5 mg and lidocaine. Morphine 1.5 and 5 mg treatments led to consistently and significantly elevated PPT and PPtol measures in men, but not in women. Morphine administered in the trapezius muscle did not affect the outcome measures. CONCLUSION A single dose intramuscular morphine produced analgesic effects up to 48 hr in patients with myofascial pain. Intramuscular morphine elevated mechanical pain threshold and tolerance in the masseter only in male patients, suggesting sex differences in local morphine effects. No systemic effect of intramuscular morphine was detected.

Cysticercosis in human is caused by larva of cyclophyllid cestode named Taenia solium. Worm infestation is quite common in developing countries due to poor sanitation, habit of open defection. This condition primarily involves central nervous system. We present a rare case of myocysticercosis involving the masseter muscle.

Abstract
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is released by motor neurons and affects skeletal muscle fiber and transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1), an important marker of pain modulation. However, the expression of CGRP and TRPV1 in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) during changes and in feeding patterns has not been described. We used real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization to investigate the mRNA expression levels of CGRP and TRPV1 in the TG. The expression of myosin heavy-chain (MyHC) isoforms was also investigated in the masseter muscle (MM) during the transition from sucking to mastication, an important functional trigger for muscle. The mRNA and protein levels of CGRP increased in the MM and TG from postnatal day 10 (P10) to P20 in male mice. The protein levels of TRPV1 were almost constant in the TG from P10 to P20, in contrast to increases in the MM. The mRNA abundance of TRPV1 in the TG and MM was increased from P10 to P20. The localization of an antisense probe was used to count CGRP cell numbers and found to differentiate the ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular nerve divisions of the TG. In particular, the number of CGRP+ cells per 10,000 μm2 in the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the TG gradually changed from P10 to P20. The expression of CGRP and TRPV1 in the TG and MM and the patterns of expression of different MyHC isoforms were affected by changes in feeding during male mouse development.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pigs respond to direct administration of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), although they are resistant to botulism. The human masseter is frequently targeted for BoNT therapy. We aimed to understand how BoNT affects chewing by injecting porcine masseters. METHODS One masseter of minipigs was injected with BoNT serotype A or B at doses comparable to those used in humans. Masticatory function was evaluated electromyographically. Muscle force was measured during tetany. Four weeks after injection, strain gauges affixed to the mandible assessed bone strain during chewing. Masseter mass and fiber diameter were measured after euthanasia. RESULTS BoNT-A had no measurable effect. In contrast, BoNT-B reduced electrical activity and muscle force, producing substantial asymmetry between injected and uninjected muscles. CONCLUSIONS The pig masseter is highly resistant to direct injection of BoNT-A, but it is affected by BoNT-B.

Abstract
Masseter activity patterns during chewing, which were quantitatively assessed using T50 values, were compared between the right and left sides of healthy young males. Surface electromyograms were recorded from both masseters, and each participant was asked to chew four different agar samples at his own pace across two separate sessions. The four agar samples, each possessing differing textural properties, consisted of two normal and two distinctive agar varieties. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated for each pair of T50 values to evaluate the degree of synchronization of activity patterns between both masseters. A three-way analysis of variance revealed significant main effects of the 'participant' and 'experimental session' factors, but not of the 'test food'. The number of significant coefficients increased stepwise by increasing the number of chews per sequence. These results suggest the importance of the initial stages of chewing sequences in facilitating the synchronization of bilateral masseter activity patterns.

Abstract
Paralysis of the masticatory muscles using botulinum toxin (BTX) is a common treatment for cosmetic reduction of the masseters as well as for conditions involving muscle spasm and pain. The effects of this treatment on mastication have not been evaluated, and claims that the treatment unloads the jaw joint and mandible have not been validated. If BTX treatment does decrease mandibular loading, osteopenia might ensue as an adverse result. Rabbits received a single dose of BTX or saline into one randomly chosen masseter muscle and were followed for 4 or 12 weeks. Masticatory muscle activity was assessed weekly, and incisor bite force elicited by stimulation of each masseter was measured periodically. At the endpoint, strain gages were installed on the neck of the mandibular condyle and on the molar area of the mandible for in vivo bone strain recording during mastication and muscle stimulation. After termination, muscles were weighed and mandibular segments were scanned with micro CT. BTX paralysis of one masseter did not alter chewing side or rate, in part because of compensation by the medial pterygoid muscle. Masseter-induced bite force was dramatically decreased. Analysis of bone strain data suggested that at 4 weeks, the mandibular condyle of the BTX-injected side was underloaded, as were both sides of the molar area. Bone quantity and quality were severely decreased specifically at these underloaded locations, especially the injection-side condylar head. At 12 weeks, most functional parameters were near their pre-injection levels, but the injected masseter still exhibited atrophy and percent bone area was still low in the condylar head. In conclusion, although the performance of mastication was only minimally harmed by BTX paralysis of the masseter, the resulting underloading was sufficient to cause notable and persistent bone loss, particularly at the temporomandibular joint.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to compare the levels of electromyography (EMG) activity of masseter and anterior temporalis present presurgically with changes in the intensity of muscle activity that took place post surgically for a period of 6 months follow up. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Ten patients with vertical maxillary excess were selected from the department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai. MATERIALS AND METHODS Electromyography was used as a kinesiology tool to study muscle function of Masseter and Anterior Temporalis of all ten subjects pre surgically and post surgically with a 6 month follow up. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED The statistical package SPSSPC+ (Statistical Package for Social Science, Version 4.0.1) was used for statistical analysis. Mean and standard deviation were estimated from the sample. The tests that were used for the statistical analysis were one way ANOVA and student's T test. RESULTS The final inference elucidates that the muscular activity of masseter and temporalis are improved during chewing and clenching in the postoperative 6 months period when compared to preoperative values. The duration was constant at 7 milliseconds for both the positions. CONCLUSIONS From this study, it can be concluded that there is a strong correlation between vertical maxillary excess and associated weak musculature. Electromyography has been used as an important tool to demonstrate improved muscle activity after surgical correction of vertical maxillary excess and improvement in functional deficits associated with this dentofacial deformity. From this study it can be concluded that surgical correction of vertical maxillary excess improves occlusion, leading to increased eccentric tooth contacts, increased mean amplitude and increased mean power frequency of the muscles all of which translate into improved muscle activity.

Abstract
The second exteroceptive suppression of masseter muscle activity (ES2) and tenderness in pericranial muscles were evaluated in 112 young adults who met IHS criteria in the following diagnostic classifications: 31 chronic tension headache, 31 episodic tension headache, 33 migraine without aura and 17 migraine with aura. An additional 31 subjects served as controls. Pericranial muscle tenderness better distinguished diagnostic subgroups and better distinguished recurrent headache sufferers from controls than did masseter ES2. Chronic tension headache sufferers exhibited the highest pericranial muscle tenderness, and controls exhibited the lowest tenderness (P < 0.01). All chronic tension headache sufferers exhibited muscle tenderness in at least one of the pericranial muscles evaluated, while tenderness was exhibited by 52% of controls. The association between pericranial muscle tenderness and chronic tension headache was independent of the intensity, frequency, or chronicity of headaches. Our findings raise the possibility that pericranial muscle tenderness is present early in the development of tension headache, while ES2 suppression only emerges later in the evolution of the disorder.

Abstract
Human masseter muscle is highly unusual since it contains relatively large numbers of fibres with variable myofibrillar ATPase staining as well as fibres that express neonatal and alpha-cardiac myosin heavy chain (MHC). These findings however, have not been organised together into a fibre type classification scheme. Biopsies from the anterior superficial area of masseter were collected from a large sample of healthy young adults. Biopsies were sectioned and stained for myofibrillar ATPase reactivity and the presence of MHC isoforms as detected by a series of antibodies. The MHC composition of the same biopsies was also analysed using sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). A series of rectus abdominis muscle biopsies were analysed similarly to serve as a control for type I, IIA and IIB fibres and isoforms. From the histochemical, immunohistochemical and biochemical experiments we found the masseter to contain type I, IM, IIC, IIA and IIB fibres as previously classified, but in addition there were type neonatal, alpha-cardiac, and 'other' (three or more myosins including neonatal and alpha-cardiac). The percentage of each fibre type was highly variable in masseter biopsies, but generally type I fibres were most common, and the proportion of IIB, neonatal, alpha-cardiac and 'other' fibres was low. Even in biopsies that contained relatively large amounts of these last three fibre types, the amount of neonatal and/or alpha-cardiac MHC detected on SDS-PAGE was limited, suggesting that these MHCs are a minor component in the fibres in which they are expressed.
