Abstract
BACKGROUND Infant feeding plays a vital role in neurodevelopment, and a lack of breastfeeding and complementary feeding may increase the risk of developing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, empirical evidence on this relationship remains uncertain, as most studies are based on cross-sectional designs. Therefore, this study aimed to examine this temporal relationship using longitudinal data from a birth cohort. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from Wave I (starting at 6 months old, 2005-2006) to Wave IV (up to 5 years old, 2010-2011) of the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study. A total of 19,721 pairs completed the four-wave interviews and provided information on infant feeding, medical history, ADHD occurrence, and sociodemographic characteristics. An extended Cox model with time-dependent covariates was used to examine this association. RESULTS In total, 207 infants developed ADHD during the 54-month observational period, with an estimated cumulative incidence of 5.56 per 1,000 person-years. The average breastfeeding duration was approximately 2 months. With complementary feeding, rice solid food (HR = 0.73) was found to be a protective factor against developing ADHD. Significantly associated factors for increasing ADHD risk included males, lower family income, low birth weight, maternal weight, advanced maternal age, child gastrointestinal disease, child seizures, maternal heart disease, and paternal diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSIONS Complementary feeding within 6 months is important to protect infants from developing ADHD. The beneficial effect of breastfeeding within 6 months was not observed while controlling for other risk factors. However, owing to the limitation of a smaller number of ADHD cases, further studies should rely on larger observational periods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increasing amount of evidence, derived from both human epidemiological studies and animal research, suggests that exposure to maternal obesity in utero is linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in the offspring. These can include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disability, and cerebral palsy. METHODS A thorough search in Medline/PubMed and Google Scholar databases was performed by two independent reviewers in order to investigate the link between the exposure to maternal obesity and neurodevelopmental outcomes in the offspring. A list of keywords, including maternal obesity, maternal overweight, maternal diet, neurodevelopment, and neuropsychiatric disorders, was used in the search algorithm. RESULTS The existing evidence regarding the potential mechanisms through which maternal obesity may impact offspring neurodevelopment and programming, such as inflammation, hormone dysregulation, alterations to the microbiome, and epigenetics, as well as evidence from animal studies, was summarized in this narrative review. CONCLUSIONS Maternal obesity seems to be overall associated with various neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, more robust data from future studies are needed to establish this association, which will take into account the role of potential confounders such as genetic factors and gene-environment interactions.

Abstract
Maternal adiposity (overweight or obesity) has been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, although the potential risks of long-term neuropsychiatric and behavioral outcomes in the offspring remain unclear. Using the PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify studies on maternal adiposity and offspring neuropsychiatric outcomes. Inverse variance-weighted random-effects meta-analyses were used to pool effect estimates with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) from adjusted odds ratios (OR) and hazard ratios (HR). Estimates were computed separately for preconception and pregnancy maternal overweight and obesity, with outcomes stratified by the type of neuropsychiatric outcome. In our meta-analyses of 42 epidemiological studies involving 3,680,937 mother-offspring pairs, we found increased risks of ADHD [OR=1.57, 95 % CI: 1.42-1.74], autism spectrum disorder [OR=1.42, 95 % CI: 1.22-1.65], conduct disorder [OR=1.16, 95 % CI: 1.00-1.35], Psychotic disorder [HR=1.61, 95 % CI: 1.41-1.83], externalizing behaviors [OR=1.30, 95 % CI: 1.07-1.56] and peer relationship problems [OR=1.25, 95 % CI: 1.04-1.27] in the offspring of preconception obese mothers. Similar increased risks were found in the offspring of preconception overweight mothers and those exposed to maternal adiposity during pregnancy. However, no association was found with offspring mood, anxiety, personality, eating, sleep disorders or prosocial problems. Preconception weight management may mitigate such adverse effects in the offspring.

Abstract
Background Studies suggest a link between prenatal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) exposure and poor mental health outcomes. We examined associations between prenatal GDM exposure and depressive and anxiety symptoms in children and assessed physical activity as a potential modifier of these associations. Method Seventy children (AgeM(SD): 12(2.0), 56% GDM, 59% female) and their parents completed surveys: Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and 3-day physical activity recall (3DPAR). Associations between mental health measures with GDM exposure and interactions between GDM exposure and child moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were assessed using regression. Results GDM-exposed children had higher anxiety (p = 0.03) and internalizing symptoms (CBCL) (p = 0.04) than unexposed children. There was an interaction between GDM exposure and child MVPA on anxiety (p = 0.02), internalizing (p = 0.04) and externalizing symptoms (p = 0.004). In the low MVPA group, GDM exposed children had more depressive (p = 0.03), anxiety (p = 0.003), and internalizing symptoms (p = 0.03) than unexposed children. In the high MVPA group, there were no group differences except with externalizing symptoms (p = 0.04). Conclusion Prenatal GDM is associated with higher anxiety and internalizing symptoms in children. Child MVPA modified the relationship between GDM exposure and mental health outcomes suggesting that physical activity during childhood could mitigate the negative mental health outcomes associated with prenatal GDM exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children of parents who were overweight/obese prior to pregnancy face a variety of neurodevelopmental challenges. The goal of this meta-analysis is to compile evidence about the impact of parental overweight/obesity on their children's mental health. METHODS The databases Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Pubmed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were searched until May 2022. The pooled effect size was calculated using the fixed and random effect models. We also performed I2 index, subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, quality assessment, and publication bias analysis. The protocol was registered on the PROSPERO database (CRD42022334408). RESULTS For maternal exposure (35 studies), both maternal overweight [OR 1.14 (95% CI 1.10,1.18)] and maternal obesity [OR 1.39 (95% CI (1.33, 1.45)] were significantly associated with offspring's mental disorders. Maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity increased the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) [OR 1.55 (95% CI 1.42,1.70)], autism spectrum disorder (ASD) [OR 1.37 (95% CI 1.22,1.55)], cognitive/intellectual delay [OR 1.40 (95% CI 1.21,1.63)], behavioral problems [OR 1.50 (95% CI 1.35,1.66)] and other mental diseases [OR 1.30 (95% CI 1.23,1.37)]. For paternal exposure (6 studies), paternal obesity [OR 1.17 (95% CI 1.06, 1.30)] but not overweight [OR 1.03 (95% CI 0.95,1.11)] was significantly associated with offspring's mental disorders. CONCLUSIONS Parental overweight/obesity might have negative consequences on offspring's mental health and pre-pregnancy weight control is advised.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pre-pregnancy obesity has been linked to childhood neurodevelopmental outcomes, including autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. The aim of our study was to examine the association between pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and scores on behavioral scales according to both mother and teacher report. METHODS We conducted a longitudinal study of 469 mother-child pairs. Information on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) was collected from standardized maternal interviews conducted after delivery and assessment of childhood behavioral problems was measured at 5-12 years of age according to maternal-report using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and teacher-report using the Teacher Report Form (TRF). Using normal pre-pregnancy BMI (18.5-24.9 kg/m2) as the reference (n = 305), we calculated adjusted mean differences (MD) for t-scores on broadband and syndrome scales of behavior for children of mothers with pre-pregnancy overweight (n = 101) or obese (n = 63) BMI. We also examined associations with scores in the clinical range using risk ratios (RR) and compared results across informants. To account for loss to follow-up between the initial interview and the childhood behavioral assessment, we weighted models using stabilized inverse probability weights. RESULTS Pre-pregnancy obesity was associated with a mean increase in child's total behavior problem t-scores according to both mother and teacher report, after adjustment for confounders and weighted for loss to follow-up (MD: 0.7, 95% CI: -2.2, 3.6 on CBCL; MD: 3.1, 95% CI: 0.5, 5.7 on TRF), indicating poorer behavioral outcomes. Comparing the magnitude of associations between mother and teacher-report, mean differences for pre-pregnancy obesity and most behavioral problem scales were larger for teacher-reported outcomes than mother-reported outcomes. Pre-pregnancy obesity was associated with increased risks of externalizing behaviors in the clinical range regardless of informant (CBCL RR: 1.6, 95% CI: 0.8, 3.2 and TRF RR: 1.7, 95% CI: 0.8, 3.5). Pre-pregnancy obesity was also associated with increased risks of internalizing behaviors according to teacher-report (TRF RR: 2.6, 95% CI:1.5, 4.6). CONCLUSIONS Pre-pregnancy obesity, compared to pre-pregnancy normal weight, is associated with generally higher scores on both mother and teacher reported childhood behavioral assessments, indicating an increased likelihood of behavioral problems.

Abstract
The early stage of development is a vulnerable period for progeny neurodevelopment, altering cytogenetic and correct cerebral functionality. The exposure High-Fat Diet (HFD) is a factor that impacts the future mental health of individuals. This review analyzes possible mechanisms involved in the development of mood disorders in adulthood because of maternal HFD intake during gestation and lactation, considering previously reported findings in the last five years, both in humans and animal models. Maternal HFD could induce alterations in mood regulation, reported as increased stress response, anxiety-like behavior, and depressive-like behavior. These changes were mostly related to HPA axis dysregulations and neuroinflammatory responses. In conclusion, there could be a relationship between HFD consumption during the early stages of life and the development of psychopathologies during adulthood. These findings provide guidelines for the understanding of possible mechanisms involved in mood disorders, however, there is still a need for more human clinical studies that provide evidence to improve the understanding of maternal nutrition and future mental health outcomes in the offspring.

Abstract
Maternal obesity in pregnancy predicts offspring psychopathology risk in childhood but it remains unclear whether maternal obesity or underweight associate with adult offspring mental disorders. We examined longitudinally whether maternal body mass index (BMI) in pregnancy predicted mental disorders in her offspring and whether the associations differed by offspring birth year among 68,571 mother–child dyads of Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank, Scotland. The offspring were born 1950–1999. Maternal BMI was measured at a mean 15.7 gestational weeks and classified into underweight, normal weight, overweight, moderate obesity and severe obesity. Mental disorders were identified from nationwide registers carrying diagnoses of all hospitalizations and deaths in Scotland in 1996–2017. We found that maternal BMI in pregnancy was associated with offspring mental disorders in a time-dependent manner: In offspring born 1950–1974, maternal underweight predicted an increased hazard of mental disorders [Hazard Ratio (HR) = 1.74; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.01–3.00)]. In offspring born 1975–1999, maternal severe obesity predicted increased hazards of any mental (HR 1.60; 95% CI 1.08–2.38) substance use (HR 1.91; 95% CI 1.03–3.57) and schizophrenia spectrum (HR 2.80; 95% CI 1.40–5.63) disorders. Our findings of time-specific associations between maternal prenatal BMI and adult offspring mental disorders may carry important public health implications by underlining possible lifelong effects of maternal BMI on offspring psychopathology.
