Abstract
OBJECTIVES Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is a little known sexually transmitted infection (STI) that presents complications for infected individuals. In the absence of data in Reunion Island, our aim was to estimate the prevalence of TV and to study the risk factors and clinical signs associated with this infection. METHOD Between January 2020 and December 2022, all persons tested for TV at the University Hospital (UH) and STI centres (CeGIDDs) of Reunion Island were included in this study. TV prevalence was estimated based on the results of the multiplex PCR tests on samples collected from genital, anal or oropharyngeal sites. RESULTS Out of the 17,261 samples (from 13,847 patients) included, 310 were positive for TV (30 from CeGIDDs and 280 from UH), representing overall TV prevalence of 2.20 % (95 % CI: 1.99-2.49). The prevalence of TV was 0.80 % (95 % CI: 0.52-1.10) in CeGIDDs (n = 3,733) and 2.80 % (95 % CI: 2.45-3.09) in UH (n = 10,114). In the CeGIDD population, prevalence of TV was 1.15 % (95 % CI: 0.71-1.8) for women, compared with 0.47 % (95 % CI: 0.22-0.90) for men. TV was statistically significantly associated with precariousness (aOR 3.13, 95 % CI: 1.46-6.46), and 23.3 % (7/30, 95 % CI: 8.20-38.47) of TV-positive patients had symptoms. CONCLUSION Compared to other countries, Reunion Island is one of the lower-risk areas for TV. Its presence is associated with poor living conditions and a paucity of clinical signs.

Abstract
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are an important and growing public health concern. Implementation of screening programmes and awareness campaigns are crucial to mitigate this problem. A university in the central region of Portugal has devised a health-promotion programme, named Protection+, specifically directed towards the sexual health of the university community. The present study aimed to evaluate the results of the different actions undertaken as part of the health-promotion programme during the 2023-2024 academic year. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and infection with Mycoplasma genitalium were assessed through real-time polymerase chain reaction protocols. Syphilis, infection with HIV, HBV and HCV were assessed through immunological assays. The adherence to the health-promotion programme after the awareness campaigns was also evaluated. STIs have been diagnosed in 13.7% of the 475 screened participants. Chlamydia was the STI most frequently diagnosed (8.4%), followed by infection with M. genitalium (2.3%), T. pallidum (2.0%) and N. gonorrhoeae (1.1%). HIV, HBV and HCV were diagnosed in a residual number of cases, and T. vaginalis was not detected in any of the screened participants. At the time of diagnosis, more than half of the infected patients were asymptomatic. After the implementation of awareness campaigns, an increase in the adherence to STI screening was observed, with the expected simultaneous increase in STI diagnoses. The high prevalence of STIs, particularly chlamydia, in the university population, along with the asymptomatic nature of these infections, demonstrated the importance of STI screenings and the implementation of campaigns that raise awareness on the prevention and consequences of untreated STIs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be caused by a number of microorganisms that vary greatly in size, life cycle, clinical manifestations, and sensitivity to available treatments. Transmission of STIs can occur during unprotected (or condomless) sexual contact and through the exchange of body fluids during any type of activity. The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases remains high in the world, despite diagnostic and therapeutic improvements for these infectious diseases that rapidly eliminate the contagiousness of patients. Our study determines the prevalence of STI pathogens in adolescents and young adults in the population of the Province of Macerata (Italy). We will analyze data in correspondence to age and gender, and we will compare our results to international studies. MATERIALS AND METHOD We analyzed STI test results from the entire database of a Provincial Health Authority for the period 2021-2022. The samples came from the following age groups: 0-12, 13-18, 19-25, and 26-35 from 2021 to 2022. The results came from vaginal and cervical swabs (for females); urethral, rectal, and pharyngeal swabs (for males and females); and seminal fluid (for males) for the following infections: HPV, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasmas, Gardnerella, Trichomonas vaginalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Treponema pallidum. The results also came from blood tests for HIV, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and Treponema pallidum (TPHA, VDRL). In addition, we examined results from urine tests for chlamydia, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, trichomonas, and Treponema pallidum. CONCLUSIONS The literature for other countries reports the need for comprehensive, culturally and developmentally sensitive care to address sexuality-related issues in adolescents and young adults, a need that also applies to Italy. These data will be of great importance in adopting evidence-based STI control programs in Marche Region. This study could, indeed, represent a landmark for public health officials and professionals, with the aim of promoting adolescents' access to sexual health services to receive useful information, strengthening preventive measures in younger age groups, and designing sexual education programs.

Abstract
BackgroundAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a growing concern worldwide and surveillance is needed. In Belgium, samples are sent to the National Reference Centre of Sexually Transmitted Infections (NRC-STI) on a voluntary basis and representative or robust national AMR data are lacking.AimWe aimed to estimate the occurrence of resistant MG in Belgium.MethodsBetween July and November 2022, frozen remnants of MG-positive samples from 21 Belgian laboratories were analysed at the NRC-STI. Macrolide and fluoroquinolone resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) were assessed using Sanger sequencing of the 23SrRNA and parC gene. Differences in resistance patterns were correlated with surveillance methodology, socio-demographic and behavioural variables via Fisher's exact test and logistic regression analysis.ResultsOf the 244 MG-positive samples received, 232 could be sequenced for macrolide and fluoroquinolone RAMs. Over half of the sequenced samples (55.2%) were resistant to macrolides. All sequenced samples from men who have sex with men (MSM) (24/24) were macrolide-resistant. Fluoroquinolone RAMs were found in 25.9% of the samples and occurrence did not differ between socio-demographic and sexual behaviour characteristics.ConclusionAlthough limited in sample size, our data suggest no additional benefit of testing MG retrieved from MSM for macrolide resistance in Belgium, when making treatment decisions. The lower occurrence of macrolide resistance in other population groups, combined with emergence of fluoroquinolone RAMs support macrolide-resistance testing in these groups. Continued surveillance of resistance in MG in different population groups will be crucial to confirm our findings and to guide national testing and treatment strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) among HPV-positive women undergoing colposcopy at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Hunan, China. Additionally, we aimed to assess the impact of C. trachomatis or M. genitalium co-infection with HPV on the severity of cervical lesions. METHODS We collected HPV data, cervical cytology results, and demographic information from 439 women attending colposcopy. Cervical swabs were obtained for simultaneous amplification testing (SAT) of C. trachomatis and M. genitalium. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between sexually transmitted pathogens and cervical lesions. RESULTS Among the participants, C. trachomatis was detected in 17 (3.87%) individuals, and M. genitalium in 16 (3.64%) individuals. There was no co-infection of C. trachomatis and M. genitalium. The highest prevalence of M. genitalium was observed in women aged 19-30 years (10.20%; 95% CI, 1.41-18.99%), with a subsequent decline in prevalence with increasing age (Ptrend = 0.014). The most common HPV subtype in our study was HPV52 (30.79%), followed by HPV16 (18.62%), HPV58 (16.95%), and HPV53 (10.02%). Infection with HPV16 (OR = 3.43, 95% CI, 2.13-5.53), HPV31 (OR = 3.70, 95% CI, 1.44-9.50), and HPV33 (OR = 3.71, 95% CI, 1.43-9.67) was associated with an increased severity of cervical lesions, while HPV53 infection was not likely to lead to advanced cervical lesions (OR = 0.45, 95% CI, 0.23-0.89). The leukocyte level in vaginal secretions (P = 0.042) and cervical cytology results (P < 0.001) showed associations with the degree of cervical lesions. However, there was no significant association between C. trachomatis or M. genitalium infection and the severity of cervical lesions, nor with their co-infection with HPV16. CONCLUSIONS There was no correlation between co-infection of Chlamydia trachomatis or Mycoplasma genitalium and the degree of cervical lesions in HPV-positive population in Hunan, China. Our findings emphasized the need to pay more attention to M. genitalium infection among young women. Increased levels of leukocytes in vaginal secretions may be linked to cervical lesions. HPV16, HPV31, and HPV33 in Hunan province, China, may exhibit higher cervical pathogenicity.

Abstract
The global incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains high, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that over 1 million people acquire STIs daily. STIs can lead to infertility, pregnancy complications, and cancers. Co-infections with multiple pathogens are prevalent among individuals with an STI and can lead to heightened infectivity and more severe clinical manifestations. Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is the most reported bacterial STI worldwide in both men and women, and several studies have demonstrated co-infection of CT with viral and other bacterial STIs. CT is a gram-negative bacterium with a unique biphasic developmental cycle including infectious extracellular elementary bodies (EBs) and metabolically active intracellular reticulate bodies (RBs). The intracellular form of this organism, RBs, has evolved mechanisms to persist for long periods within host epithelial cells in a viable but non-cultivable state. The co-infections of CT with the most frequently reported sexually transmitted viruses: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) have been investigated through in vitro and in vivo studies. These research studies have made significant strides in unraveling the intricate interactions between CT, these viral STIs, and their eukaryotic host. In this review, we present an overview of the epidemiology of these co-infections, while specifically delineating the underlying mechanisms by which CT influences the transmission and infection dynamics of HIV and HSV. Furthermore, we explore the intricate relationship between CT and HPV infection, with a particular emphasis on the heightened risk of cervical cancer. By consolidating the current body of knowledge, we provide valuable insights into the complex dynamics and implications of co-infection involving CT and sexually transmitted viruses.

Mycoplasma genitalium is a newly emerged sexually transmitted disease pathogen and an independent risk factor for female cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. The clinical symptoms caused by M. genitalium infection are mild and easily ignored. If left untreated, M. genitalium can grow along the reproductive tract and cause salpingitis, leading to infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, M. genitalium infection in late pregnancy can increase the incidence of preterm birth. M. genitalium infections are often accompanied by co-infection with other sexually transmitted pathogens (Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis) and viral infections (Human Papilloma Virus and Human Immunodeficiency Virus). A recent study suggested that M. genitalium plays a role in tumor development in the female reproductive system. However, few studies endorsed this finding. In recent years, M. genitalium has evolved into a new "superbug" due to the emergence of macrolide-and fluoroquinolone-resistant strains leading to frequent therapy failures. This review summarizes the pathogenic characteristics of M. genitalium and the female reproductive diseases caused by M. genitalium (cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility, premature birth, co-infection, reproductive tumors, etc.), as well as its potential relationship with reproductive tumors and clinical treatment.
