Abstract
T cells play a critical and irreplaceable role in maintaining overall health. However, their functions undergo alterations as individuals age. It is of utmost importance to comprehend the specific characteristics of T-cell aging, as this knowledge is crucial for gaining deeper insights into the pathogenesis of aging-related diseases and developing effective therapeutic strategies. In this review, we have thoroughly examined the existing studies on the characteristics of immune organ aging. Furthermore, we elucidated the changes and potential mechanisms that occur in T cells during the aging process. Additionally, we have discussed the latest research advancements pertaining to T-cell aging-related diseases. These findings provide a fresh perspective for the study of T cells in the context of aging.

Abstract
Breath-hold diving performances are typically better in men than in women. However, it is still being determined if there are differences in the physiological responses to breath-holding between the sexes. We conducted a study comparing the maximum breath-hold duration, heart rate (HR) reduction, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and spleen volume and contraction in 37 men and 44 women, all of whom had no prior breath-holding experience. They performed two dry apneas separated by 2 min; the first was limited to 60 s, followed by a maximal effort apnea. HR and SpO2 were measured continuously. Spleen diameters were measured via ultrasonography before and immediately following each apnea. The maximal apneic duration was longer in men (78 ± 19 s) compared with women (61 ± 18 s, p < 0.001), while the HR reduction was similar (women: 16% ± 19% versus men: 16% ± 17%, p = 0.973). The absolute splenic contraction was greater in men (59 ± 56 mL) compared with women (35 ± 28 mL, p < 0.001) in the first apnea, while the relative contraction was similar (women: 21% ± 17% versus men: 23% ± 13%, p = 0.528). In addition, the lowest SpO2 during the maximal apnea was similar between sexes (women: 93.3% ± 4.4%; men: 91.9% ± 4.3%, p = 0.161). We conclude that men have larger spleen size and contraction, lung size, and maximal apneic duration than women. The cardiovascular diving response is similar between sexes for those inexperienced with apneic diving. The longer breath-hold duration in men may be partly due to greater oxygen storage capacity, which results from larger vital capacity and greater spleen size and contraction.

Abstract
The study was designed to investigate the protective effect of dietary supplementation with coated benzoic acid (CBA) on intestinal barrier function in weaned pigs challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Thirty-two pigs were randomized to four treatments and given either a basal diet or a basal diet supplemented with 3.0 g/kg CBA, followed by oral administration of ETEC or culture medium. The results showed that CBA supplementation increased the average daily weight gain (ADWG) in the ETEC-challenged pigs (p < 0.05). CBA also increased the serum activity of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), as it decreased the serum concentrations of endotoxin, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the ETEC-challenged pigs (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the CBA alleviated the ETEC-induced intestinal epithelial injury, as indicated by a reversal of the decrease in D-xylose absorption and a decrease in the serum levels of D-lactate and diamine oxidase (DAO) activity, as well as a decrease in the quantity of apoptotic cells in the jejunal epithelium following ETEC challenge (p < 0.05). Moreover, CBA supplementation significantly elevated the mucosal antioxidant capacity and increased the abundance of tight junction protein ZO-1 and the quantity of sIgA-positive cells in the jejunal epithelium (p < 0.05). Notably, CBA increased the expression levels of porcine beta defensin 2 (PBD2), PBD3, and nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf-2), while downregulating the expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in the jejunal mucosa (p < 0.05). Moreover, CBA decreased the expression levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the ileal mucosa upon ETEC challenge (p < 0.05). These results suggest that CBA may attenuate ETEC-induced damage to the intestinal epithelium, resulting in reduced inflammation, enhanced intestinal immunity and antioxidant capacity, and improved intestinal epithelial function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The correlation between the preoperative splenic area measured on CT scans and the overall survival (OS) of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients remains unclear. METHODS A retrospective discovery cohort and validation cohort consisting of consecutive NSCLC patients who underwent resection and preoperative CT scans were created. The patients were divided into two groups based on the measurement of their preoperative splenic area: normal and abnormal. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to analyse the correlation between splenic area and OS. RESULTS The discovery and validation cohorts included 2532 patients (1374 (54.27%) males; median (IQR) age 59 (52-66) years) and 608 patients (403 (66.28%) males; age 69 (62-76) years), respectively. Patients with a normal splenic area had a 6% higher 5-year OS (n = 727 (80%)) than patients with an abnormal splenic area (n = 1805 (74%)) (p = 0.007) in the discovery cohort. A similar result was obtained in the validation cohort. In the univariable analysis, the OS hazard ratios (HRs) for the patients with abnormal splenic areas were 1.32 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08, 1.61) in the discovery cohort and 1.59 (95% CI: 1.01, 2.50) in the validation cohort. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that abnormal splenic area was independent of shorter OS in the discovery (HR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.63) and validation cohorts (HR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.12, 3.02). CONCLUSION Preoperative CT measurements of the splenic area serve as a prognostic indicator for early-stage NSCLC patients, offering a novel metric with potential implications for personalized therapeutic strategies in top-tier oncology research.

Abstract
Background and Aim Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disorder. Typical clinical manifestations are self-limiting attacks of recurrent fever, abdominal pain, arthralgia, and chest pain due to aseptic polyserositis. Renal involvement is common in FMF patients. Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a noninvasive method that provides the measurement of tissue stiffness. In this study, we aimed to show that SWE can be used as an adjunctive method for evaluating renal involvement in children with FMF. Materials and Methods Our study group consists of 79 pediatric FMF patients and 79 control individuals. The study was planned prospectively. The variables, such as age, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) of the patient and control groups, were kept in a similar way in order not to be affected by the differences. The right and left kidney sizes, parenchymal thicknesses, and SWE values in both groups were compared. The parenchymal stiffness degrees of the kidneys were quantified by shear modulus values in kilopascals. Results In our study, no statistically significant difference was found between the control and patient groups in terms of the right and left kidney longitudinal dimensions, transverse dimensions, and parenchymal thicknesses. When the kidneys were evaluated in terms of the right and left kidney stiffness values, the stiffness values in the patient group were significantly higher in both kidneys compared with those in the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusions SWE can be a noninvasive quantitative imaging method that can be used to evaluate kidney involvement by detecting changes in kidney stiffness in children with FMF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS We investigated the factors related to spleen length and the diagnostic accuracy of a model using spleen length corrected by related factors, for the prediction of varices needing treatment (VNT). METHODS Various prediction models for VNT including spleen length were analyzed in the cohort of compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD), defined as liver stiffness (LS) ≥10 kPa in a recent study. The associated factors for spleen length were identified in healthy subjects to improve the prediction of VNT. RESULTS Among 1,218 cACLD patients, VNT was noted in 249 patients (20.4%). On multivariate analysis, longer spleen length, lower platelet count, and higher LS value were independent predictors for VNT (all p<0.001). In multivariate analysis of 1,041 healthy subjects, age (β=-0.027), sex (β=0.762), and body mass index (β=0.097) were found to be significant factors for spleen length (all p<0.001). Using the β values, the estimated spleen length was calculated. To improve the prediction of VNT, the ratio of measured and estimated spleen length was calculated. Based on binary regression analysis results, the LS value-spleen ratio to platelet score (LSRPS) was calculated as follows: 0.027×LS value (kPa)+2.690×measured/estimated spleen ratio-0.011×platelet count (cells×109/L)-4.215. The area under the receiver operating characteristic of the LSRPS for VNT was 0.820, which was significantly higher than 0.797 of LS value-spleen diameter to platelet ratio score (LSPS) (p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS Spleen length is influenced by age, sex, and body mass index in the Asian population. The LSRPS using the measured/estimated spleen ratio had higher diagnostic accuracy than LSPS in predicting VNT in patients with cACLD.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of an organic acid (OA) blend on intestinal barrier function, intestinal inflammation, and gut microbiota in mice challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 (ETEC K88). Ninety female Kunming mice (7 weeks old) were randomly allotted to five treatments with six replicates per treatment and three mice per replicate. The five treatments were composed of the non-ETEC K88 challenge group and ETEC K88 challenge + OA blend groups (0, 0.6 %, 1.2 %, and 2.4 % OA blend). The OA blend consisted of 47.5 % formic acid, 47.5 % benzoic acid, and 5 % tributyrin. The feeding trial lasted for 15 days, and mice were intraperitoneally injected with PBS or ETEC K88 solution on day 15. At 24 h post-challenge, one mouse per replicate was selected for sample collection. The results showed that a dosage of 0.6 % OA blend alleviated the ETEC K88-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction, as indicated by the elevated villus height and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth of jejunum, and the reduced serum diamine oxidase (DAO) and D-lactate levels, as well as the up-regulated mRNA levels of ZO-1, Claudin-1, and Occludin in jejunum mucosa of mice. Furthermore, dietary addition with 0.6 % OA blend decreased ETEC K88-induced inflammation response, as suggested by the decreased TNF-α and IL-6 levels, and the increased IgA level in the serum, as well as the down-regulated mRNA level of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, TLR-4, MyD88, and MCP-1 in jejunum mucosa of mice. Regarding gut microbiota, the beta-diversity analysis revealed a remarkable clustering between the 0.6 % OA blend group and the ETEC K88 challenge group. Supplementation of 0.6 % OA blend decreased the relative abundance of Firmicutes, and increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, Desulfobacterota, and Verrucomicrobiota of colonic digesta in mice. Also, the butyric acid content in the colonic digesta of mice was increased by dietary 0.6 % OA blend supplementation. Collectively, a dosage of 0.6 % OA blend could alleviate the ETEC K88-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction by regulating intestinal inflammation and gut microbiota of mice.

Abstract
Aim: Sonoelastography is a non-invasive imaging method used to evaluate the mechanical properties of any tissue. The clinical value of method, the usage of which is increasingly prevailing, is gradually increasing and on account of having newly entered the application field, it is becoming a potential in the research area. Shear wave (SW) propagates faster in stiffer and lower elastic tissues. Studies on liver fibrosis musculoskeletal, breast, prostate, testis, and thyroid nodules accept this principle. In this study, aimed to determine the average values using the point shear wave elastography (pSWE) technique in normal healthy individuals and to determine the relationship of these values with age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and the spleen dimensions.Method: In 2019, patients who had visited the internal medicine service and those who have been directed to this clinics for grayscale ultrasound (US) for various reasons are voluntarily included in the study. The research was carried out consecutively on the same day by two specialist doctors who had 10 and 15 years of experience in ultrasonography and 3-year experience in elastography.Results: 39 (39%) of the 100 patients who participated in the study were men, and 61 (61%) were women. And the ages varied between 32-75 years (y) (54,5±9,5). The average spleen stiffness was found to be 89,2±43,3 kilopascal (kPa) (14,2-152,3) by the first observer and 89,4±41,1 kPa (14,4-151,1) by the second observer.Conclusion: To facilitate the common clinical usage and to evaluate the change in the stiffness of the spleen in different patients, first of all, it is required to determine the normal values of the stiffness of the spleen in healthy individuals using sonoelastography. In this study, the average spleen parenchyma stiffness was detected as higher than in previous studies. The values obtained in this study can be used to function as a comparison to determine the spleen stiffness. They can be used as referential to examine the different spleen pathologies in the clinical environments that use Esaote myLab device and pSWE method.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our previous study found that white adipose stem cells (W-ASCs) derived from abdominal and femoral sulcus white adipose stem cells (ASCs) have antiaging and age-related obesity effects. Whether interscapular brown adipose stem cells (B-ASCs) have the same effect has not been reported. The study objective was to compare the effects of ASCs from different tissues on aging and aging-related obesity. PATIENTS AND METHODS C57BL/6J mice at 22 months of age were transplanted with either B-ASCs or W-ASCs from young mice at 2 months of age. Changes in body weight, biochemistry, cytokines, hormone secretion, cell senescence, lipid metabolism, and ASC function were assessed after transplanted 1 month. RESULTS W-ASCs were superior to B-ASCs as aging and age-related obesity indicators, based on change in body weight, organ weight, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, lipid metabolism, and liver and kidney function. CONCLUSION Difference in the tissue source was reflected by the heterogeneity of antiaging and age-related obesity effects of transplanted ASCs. Based on the study results, we recommend W-ASCs over B-ASCs in aging and age-related obesity applications.

Abstract
Purpose To assess the performance of shear wave ultrasound elastography (SWE) for non-invasive grading of fibrosis in normal BMI patients with varied aetiology chronic liver disease. Method Prospective SWE liver and spleen stiffness (LS, SS respectively) of 124 patients (94 men, mean age 45.4 ± 12.4 years, mean BMI 19.66 ± 1.49) with CLD of mixed aetiology, who underwent liver biopsy, between January 2019-20 was analysed using receiver operating curve (ROC) and classification analysis regression tree (CART) to determine fibrosis cut-off values and nominal logistical regression to quantify fibrosis. Results Of 124 patients, 50 (40%) had non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), 31 (25%) chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and 43 (35%) alcoholic liver disease (ALD) on biopsy. Overall mean LS and SS of the study population was 11.81 ± 5.9 and 16.88 ± 10.8 kPa, respectively. LS cut-off value <8 kPa was consistent with F0, 9-14 kPa for F1-F2 and >14.9 kPa for F3-F4 fibrosis on biopsy. On application of CART, LS value < 5.3 kPa was discriminative for NASH, 5.32 to <12.64 kPa for CHB, >12.64 kPa for ALD, SS <15.3 kPa was discriminative for NASH, 15.3-30 kPa for CHB and >30 kPa for ALD in our study population. Conclusion SWE is a viable non-invasive tool for assessment of liver fibrosis grading in a population of mixed aetiology CLD. LS values in conjunction with SS are promising predictors of F2-F3 fibrosis with potential to discriminate select categories like CHB and NASH in such a population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the performance of liver stiffness (LS) and spleen stiffness (SS) by using the sound touch elastography (STE) technique and compare with those of the splenic index, aspartate transaminase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, King's score and combined models for diagnosing and staging fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB). METHODS One hundred patients with CHB underwent STE and serological tests. LS and SS values were measured with STE technique, and splenic index was calculated. Staging of fibrosis was determined with liver biopsy. Correlations between the individual parameters and the stage of fibrosis were evaluated with the Spearman correlation analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was calculated to analyze the performance of all methods. RESULTS Among all individual parameters, LS showed the highest AUROC for diagnosing fibrosis of ≥S2, ≥S3, and S4 stages (AUROC: 0.70, 0.86, and 0.96, respectively; all P < 0.05). The AUROC of combined model 1 (LS and SS) and 2 (LS, SS, APRI, FIB-4 index, King's score) for diagnosing ≥S2, ≥S3, and S4 fibrosis were 0.70, 0.86, 0.97, and 0.70, 0.86, 0.96, respectively, which were higher than those of APRI, FIB-4 index and the King's score (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found between two combined models and LS for staging fibrosis (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS LS measurement is reliable for diagnosing and staging fibrosis in CHB, with a better performance than SS, splenic index and serum biomarkers. It is also comparable with the performance of combined models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few systematic comparative studies of the different methods of physical elastography of the spleen are currently available.
AIM To compare point shear wave and two-dimensional elastography of the spleen considering the anatomical location (upper, hilar, and lower pole).
METHODS As part of a prospective clinical study, healthy volunteers were examined for splenic elasticity using four different ultrasound devices between May 2015 and April 2017. The devices used for point shear wave elastography were from Siemens (S 3000) and Philips (Epiq 7), and those used for two-dimensional shear wave elastography were from GE (Logiq E9) and Toshiba (Aplio 500). In addition, two different software versions (5.0 and 6.0) were evaluated for the Toshiba ultrasound device (Aplio 500). The study consisted of three arms: A, B, and C.
RESULTS In study arm A, 200 subjects were evaluated (78 males and 122 females, mean age 27.9 ± 8.1 years). In study arm B, 113 subjects were evaluated (38 men and 75 women, mean age 26.0 ± 6.3 years). In study arm C, 44 subjects were enrolled. A significant correlation of the shear wave velocities at the upper third of the spleen (r = 0.33088, P < 0.0001) was demonstrated only for the Philips Epiq 7 device compared to the Siemens Acuson S 3000. In comparisons of the other ultrasound devices (GE, Siemens, Toshiba), no comparable results could be obtained for any anatomical position of the spleen. The influencing factors age, gender, and body mass index did not show a clear correlation with the measured shear wave velocities.
CONCLUSION The absolute values of the shear wave elastography measurements of the spleen and the two different elastography methods are not comparable between different manufacturers or models.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare spleen sizes in a hospital and a population sample using ultrasound and define normal values and factors influencing spleen size. METHODS Both samples' spleen sizes (n = 1520) were measured using ultrasound under the same conditions. Blood counts and other laboratory parameters were determined under the same conditions in both samples. RESULTS In the hospital sample (n = 760), the mean spleen size was 114.7 mm, and in the population sample (n = 760), it was 99.1 mm. In both, spleen size in men was significantly higher than in women (p < 0.0001) and influenced by body height, weight, and BMI (body mass index) (p < 0.0001). In the hospital sample, there was a correlation with higher values for ALT (p = 0.0160), AST (p = 0.0394), AP (p = 0.0482), and ferritin (p = 0.0008) and lower values for HDL (p = 0.0091) and thrombocytes (p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, higher values for AP (p = 0.0059) and lower values for hemoglobin (p = 0.0014) and thrombocytes (p = 0.0001) were found. Stratified for sex (men, women), spleen size increased with higher values for ALT (p = 0.0116, p = 0.0113), AST (p = 0.0014, p = 0.0113), and AP (p = 0.0001, p = 0.0012), and with lower values of hemoglobin (p = 0.0057, p = 0.0016), thrombocytes (p < 0.0001, p = 0.0003), and albumin (p = 0.0029, p = 0.0432). In women, there was a discordant correlation with red blood cells (p = 0.0005) and a concordant correlation with GGT (p = 0.0241), and in men discordant correlations with cholesterol (p = 0.0010) and HDL (p = 0.0404). CONCLUSIONS The already proven impact of anthropometric data on spleen size was confirmed. The role of laboratory values should be further analyzed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To measure spleen stiffness by shear wave elastography (SWE) using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) in patients with splenomegaly and to evaluate utility of elastography technique in identifying etiology of splenomegaly. METHODS Sixty-one treatment-naïve patients with splenomegaly were enrolled. The control group consisted of 20 healthy subjects without history of any disease including diabetes and hypertension, alcohol consumption, or biochemical or ultrasonographic findings indicating hepatic and renal diseases. B-mode ultrasonography and elastographic examinations were performed by a radiologist blinded to the participants. Spleen stiffness was measured by SWE using ARFI. Shear wave velocity (SWV) values were given in m/s. RESULTS Splenomegaly patients were assigned into three groups according to their etiologies as hepatoportal (n = 21), myeloproliferative (n = 23), and infectious (n = 17). Splenomegaly groups and control group were comparable regarding age and sex. Spleen size was higher in the splenomegaly groups than in the controls. Median SWV was significantly higher in the hepatoportal (3.85 m/s) and myeloproliferative (3.42 m/s) groups than in the infectious (2.66 m/s) and control (2.22 m/s) groups. The correlation between SWV and spleen size was not significant in any of the groups. The cut-off value was 3.42 (sensitivity 80.9%, specificity 56.5%) in distinguishing hepatoportal from myeloproliferative etiology; 3.02 (sensitivity 100%, specificity 100%) in distinguishing hepatoportal from infectious etiology; and 2.84 (sensitivity 91.3%, specificity 88.2%) in distinguishing myeloproliferative from infectious etiology. CONCLUSION Spleen stiffness measured by elastographic techniques in splenomegaly patients was higher than that in healthy subjects. SWV appeared to be beneficial in predicting the etiology of splenomegaly.

Abstract
Aims Congestive splenomegaly is a classic sign of organ congestion in acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). Shear wave elastography (SWE) allows the measurement of spleen stiffness (SS). We hypothesized that SS could quantify the severity of splenic congestion and predict adverse events in ADHF. Methods and Results This study included two cohorts: a haemodynamic cohort (62 HF patients) and an outcome cohort (115 ADHF patients). SS was measured by two‐dimensional SWE on the same day of right heart catheterization in the haemodynamic cohort. Right atrial pressure (RAP) independently correlated with SS (β = 0.32, P = 0.002). SS was measured in the outcome cohort before discharge. The 115 patients were divided into three groups on the basis of the tertile value of SS. The third tertile SS group had a higher prevalence of severe tricuspid regurgitation, higher N‐terminal B‐type natriuretic peptide (NT pro‐BNP), and larger right ventricular diastolic diameter, than had the first tertile group and the second tertile group. During a median follow‐up period of 105 (77–135) days, adverse events occurred in 25 patients (one death and 24 rehospitalizations for HF). The third tertile SS group had a significantly higher rate of adverse events (P < 0.001). A higher SS was independently associated with adverse events after adjusting for conventional validated risk score, liver function test, liver stiffness, and estimated RAP. Conclusions The degree of SS at discharge can be used as a marker of residual splenic congestion, which is predictive of adverse events in patients with ADHF.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the feasibility of acoustic radiation force impulse point shear wave elastography (ARFI-pSWE) of the liver and spleen in patients with Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1), and to assess correlations between organ stiffness and clinico-radiologic data, particularly the GD1 Severity Scoring System (GD-DS3). MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the results of ARFI-pSWE as measures of liver and spleen stiffness in 57 patients with GD1. The feasibility of the method was assessed. Correlations between elastography data and clinical data related to the metabolic syndrome, laboratory tests, and GD1-related clinico-radiologic data (bone marrow burden score, GD-DS3) were assessed. RESULTS ARFI-pSWE provided reliable results (i.e. standard deviation <30% of the mean value between the measurements) in 50/57 patients. Significant liver fibrosis was present in 35/50 patients (70%). Liver stiffness significantly correlated with GD-DS3 score (p = .03), and number of fulfilled criteria of metabolic syndrome (p = .03). Spleen stiffness significantly correlated with age (p = .021), body mass index (p = .002), number of fulfilled criteria of metabolic syndrome (p = .02), and several laboratory parameters (alanine aminotransferase, gamma glutamyltranspeptidase, triglycerides, cholesterol), and nearly significantly with GD-DS3 score (p = .059). CONCLUSION ARFI-pSWE is a useful tool for a more detailed assessment of disease severity in patients with GD1, which adds relevant information to the standard clinical scores. Thus, elastography might allow for extended therapy monitoring, especially in patients with significant liver fibrosis. Spleen elastography showed promising results; thus, its role should be further investigated.

Abstract
Background Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the leading bacterial causes of intestinal inflammation and diarrhea. However, the ETEC is frequently resistant to common antibiotics. In this study, we explored the role of a novel antibacterial peptide Bombyx mori gloverin A2 (BMGlvA2) in alleviating ETEC-induced inflammation and intestinal epithelium disruption in mice. Methods An ETEC-challenged mice model was used, and the ETEC-challenged mice and non-challenged mice were treated by the BMGlvA2 at different doses. Results ETEC challenge not only elevated the concentrations of serum inflammatory cytokines such as the IL-6 and TNF-α (P < 0.01), but also elevated the concentrations of serum creatinine and urea (P < 0.05). However, BMGlvA2 attenuated the inflammatory responses by decreasing the serum inflammatory cytokines and improving the metabolisms in ETEC-challenged mice, and alleviated the ETEC-induced tissue damage in spleen. Moreover, BMGlvA2 treatment significantly elevated the duodenum villus height and decreased the crypt depth in the duodenum and ileum in ETEC-challenged mice (P < 0.05). Interestingly, BMGlvA2 improved the distribution and abundance of tight-junction protein ZO1 in duodenum and ileum epithelium after ETEC-challenge. Moreover, BMGlvA2 significantly down-regulated the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) and the apoptosis-related genes (Caspase 8 and Caspase 9) in jejunal mucosa (P < 0.05) in the TETC-challenged mice. Importantly, BMGlvA2 significantly elevated the expression levels of critical genes related to mucosal barrier functions such as the mucins (MUC1 and MUC2) and glucose transporter (GLUT2) in the intestinal mucosa (P < 0.05). Conclusion Our results suggested a novel function of the conventional antibacterial peptides, and the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of BMGlvA2 may allow it a potential substitute for conventionally used antibiotics or drugs.
