Topsoil and urban dust pollution and toxicity in Taranto (southern Italy) industrial area and in a residential district

A set of guidelines as support for the integrated geo-environmental characterization of highly contaminated coastal sites

The knowledge of geomorphodynamic aspects is crucial for understanding marine and coastal processes/dynamics as well as for characterizing coastal environments heavily affected by anthropogenic activities. To provide a framework of analysis that can be applied in a consistent way for the geo-environmental characterization of highly contaminated coastal sites, in this paper a set of operational guidelines is proposed. Special attention is given to the role of geomorphological-based surveys and analyses in defining (i) the site-specific geological model of the investigated site, (ii) the anthropogenic impacts on marine and coastal sediments, (iii) the expected morphodynamic variations induced by climate change and anthropogenic interventions, (iv) tailored dissemination activities and community engagement plans. Then, an evaluation of the state of the art of activities already performed for the characterization of the coastal contaminated sites located in the Apulia region (southern Italy) is provided. The outcomes of this research are also provided in the form of infographics to favor their dissemination among communities and stakeholders.

Geospatial pattern of topsoil pollution and multi-endpoint toxicity in the petrochemical area of Augusta-Priolo (eastern Sicily, Italy)

The present study was aimed at identifying geospatial patterns of pollutants including concentrations and toxicity as complex environmental mixtures, in topsoil samples close to petrochemical facilities in the heavily industrialized area of Augusta and Priolo in south-eastern Sicily (Italy). Elemental analysis of soil was conducted by ICP-MS for 23 metals and 16 rare earth elements (REEs). Organic analyses were primarily focused on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (16 parent homologs) and total aliphatic hydrocarbons (C10 - C40). Topsoil samples were tested for toxicity in multiple bioassay models including: 1) developmental defects and cytogenetic anomalies in sea urchin Sphaerechinus granularis early life stages; 2) growth inhibition of diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum; 3) mortality in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans; and 4) induction of mitotic abnormalities in onion Allium cepa. Samples collected at sites closest to defined petrochemical facilities were highest in select pollutants and correlated with biological effects in different toxicity endpoints. A noteworthy finding was the increased level of total REEs in sites closest to petrochemical facilities, suggesting their contributions to identifying petrochemical sources of pollutants to the environment. The combined data obtained in the different bioassays allowed exploration of geospatial patterns of effect in biota as a function of contaminant levels. In conclusion, this study provides consistent data of soil toxicity, metal and REE contamination at Augusta-Priolo sampling sites, and may provide an appropriate baseline for epidemiological studies on high incidences of congenital birth defects in the area and identification of at-risk localities.

IQ alteration induced by lead in developed and underdeveloped/developing countries: A systematic review and a meta-analysis

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Pb exposure on full-scale IQ score in pediatric subjects. Following PRISMA guidelines, the data from January 2010 to April 2020 were systematically searched and collected on electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Embase). The eligibility criteria included cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies that were published in English, from 2010 to 2020, that analyzed the blood Pb levels of pediatric subjects (0-19 years) and possible changes in the full-scale IQ score. In this study, 2174 scientific papers were collected from three electronic databases. From those, 726 were duplicates and 1421 were excluded because they did not meet the eligibility criteria, resulting in a total of 27 papers, from which, seven were used to perform the meta-analysis. The 27 scientific papers systematically selected for this study were separated by the country where the study was realized in developed and underdeveloped/developing countries. In the underdeveloped/developing countries the blood Pb levels are higher and showed a greater variation (1.30-11.66 μgPb/dL of blood) than in countries with higher development index (0.57-4.80 μgPb/dL of blood). The full-scale IQ score are inversely proportional to the blood Pb values, and it is possible to see that in the underdeveloped/developing countries the full-scale IQ score showed lower values and greater variation (59.2-111) compared to the individuals from developed countries (91.9-114.5). In conclusion, it was observed that blood Pb levels alter the full-scale IQ score. Thus, policies for the prevention of environmental contamination and the reduction of Pb exposure must be taken, mainly, in underdeveloped/developing countries.

Recycling Behaviour of Italian Citizens in Connection with the Clarity of On-Pack Labels. A Bottom-Up Survey

The present work studies, through an online survey, the recycling behaviours of a representative sample of Italian end users, in connection with the effectiveness of on-pack recycling indications of different packed materials. The study has a special focus on the clarity of on-pack recycling indications to convey waste sorting information, and the impact of clear and straightforward labelling to improve the sorting result. The work took advantage of social media as the distribution platform, thus obtaining a relatively high involvement of citizens. To investigate the representativeness of the sample, some of its characteristics were subject to checks and comparisons to their corresponding values of the Italian population. According to almost three-quarters of the responders, a clear and straightforward labelling will improve the result of their waste sorting drastically. The general awareness of the answerers relative to the importance of waste recycling and willingness to improve the quality of their sorted waste is very high among the participants but the overall satisfaction of the on-pack indications is relatively low. The score of on-pack labels in conveying information on recycling and waste segregation is evaluated as improvable. A higher perception of circular economy concept leads to more re-utilisation of the packaging parts, which increases with the awareness about the importance of recycling.

A Review of Metal Levels in Urban Dust, Their Methods of Determination, and Risk Assessment

This review gives insights into the levels of metals in urban dust, their determination methods, and risk assessment. Urban dust harbors a number of pollutants, including heavy metals. There are various methods used for the sampling of urban dust for heavy-metal analysis and source-apportionment purposes, with the predominant one being the use of plastic sampling materials to avoid prior contamination. There are also various methods for the determination of metals, which include: atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), among others. Studies have shown that pollutants in urban dust are mainly derived from industrial activities and coal combustion, whereas traffic emissions are also an important, but not a predominant source of pollution. The varying particle-size distribution of urban dust and its large surface area makes it easier for the deposition and transport of heavy metals. Risk-assessment studies have shown that metals in urban dust could cause such problems as human pulmonary toxicity and reduction of invertebrate populations. The risk levels seem to be higher in children than adults, as some studies have shown. It is therefore important that studies on metals in urban dust should always incorporate risk assessment as one of the main issues.

Study of genotoxic and cytotoxic effects after acute and chronic exposures to industrial sewage sludge on Biomphalaria glabrata hemocytes

Industrial development has provided numerous benefits to improve quality of life in modern times, however, it has also led to the development and use of a large number of toxic chemicals which have caused damage to various ecosystems. Consequently, knowledge of techniques and organisms that can be used to monitor, identify and quantify environmental pollutants has become increasingly relevant. Therefore, the objective of this study was to use the mollusk Biomphalaria glabrata to analyze biomarker and biomonitoring parameters of industrial sewage sludge. To perform the tests, concentrations of 50, 100, 150 and 500 mg L^-1 of industrial sewage sludge were standardized. All the tests were performed after the animals were exposed to the sludge in acute and chronic forms. Embryos exposure to sludge did not show a significant percentage of the animals non-viable when compared to the control group. Subsequently, hemocytes were analyzed for the presence of cytoplasmic and nuclear alterations. Finally, the comet test was performed to quantify the genotoxic damage caused by exposure to industrial sludge. Analysis hemocytes showed a significant number of cellular alterations was observed, mainly due to the high frequency of apoptosis. Moreover, during the analysis of nucleoids several degrees of nuclear damage were identified, with the groups exposed to the highest concentrations presenting the greatest genotoxic damage. Thus, we can conclude that the parameters evaluated in the mollusk Biomphalaria glabrata have proven to be a good tool, along with other techniques and complementary organisms, to assist aspects related to biomonitoring of freshwater ecosystems.

Human health risk from consumption of two common crops grown in polluted soils

Contamination of agricultural soils by trace elements is a recurrent hazard for human health because of the possibility of pollutants entering the food chain. Aim of this study was to assess the human health risk from consumption of the common leafy (Lactuca sativa L.) and fruit (Cucurbita pepo L.) crops, in an agricultural area of Southern Italy. Along with agricultural practices, a major pollutant source is recurrent flooding from the highly polluted Solofrana river. Soil samples and edible parts of crops from 14 sites (10 flooded and 4 not flooded) were analyzed for total amounts of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn. The bio-accumulation factor (BAF) and Health Risk Index (HRI) were calculated for each element, crop and site and as average values of all sites (BAF_mean and HRI_mean). Moreover, the Hazard Index (HI) was determined for each site, as the sum of HRI for all elements. Cr and Cu, mostly derived from river flooding and agricultural practices, respectively, were the only elements whose levels exceeded law thresholds and/or the natural background of the study area. Of the two considered crops, L. sativa accumulated more Cd, Cr and Ni, whereas C. pepo was a more effective bioaccumulator of Zn. Both HRI_mean (for As, Cd, Cr and Ni) and HI were higher for L. sativa than for C. pepo. A low health risk was associated to major soil pollutants (Cr and Cu) found in the study area; in contrast, combined data on soil pollution and plant bio-accumulation points to accumulation of Cd and As, mainly in lettuce, as a potential risk for human health. The results suggest that soil pollution data alone is not sufficient to assess health risk.

Potential of PM-selected components to induce oxidative stress and root system alteration in a plant model organism

Over the last years, various acellular assays have been used for the evaluation of the oxidative potential (OP) of particular matter (PM) to predict PM capacity to generate reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) species in biological systems. However, relationships among OP and PM toxicological effects on living organisms are still largely unknown. This study aims to assess the effects of atmospheric PM-selected components (brake dust - BD, pellet ash - PA, road dust - RD, certified urban dust NIST1648a - NIST, soil dust - S, coke dust - C and Saharan dust - SD) on the model plant A. thaliana development, with emphasis on their capacity to induce oxidative stress and root morphology alteration. Before growing A. thaliana in the presence of the PM-selected components, each atmospheric dust has been chemically characterized and tested for the OP through dithiothreitol (DTT), ascorbic acid (AA) and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin (DCFH) assays. After the exposure, element bioaccumulation in the A. thaliana seedlings, i.e., in roots and shoots, was determined and both morphological and oxidative stress analyses were performed in roots. The results indicated that, except for SD and S, all the tested dusts affected A. thaliana root system morphology, with the strongest effects in the presence of the highest OPs dusts (BD, PA and NIST). Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed correlations among OPs of the dusts, element bioaccumulation and root morphology alteration, identifying the most responsible dust-associated elements affecting the plant. Lastly, histochemical analyses of NO and O₂^- content and distribution confirmed that BD, PA and NIST induce oxidative stress in A. thaliana, reflecting the high OPs of these dusts and ultimately leading to cell membrane lipid peroxidation.
