Acid Functionalized Multiwall Carbon Nanotube/Magnetite (MWCNT)-COOH/Fe3O4 Hybrid: Synthesis, Characterization and Conductivity Evaluation

Targeting ferroptosis for leukemia therapy: exploring novel strategies from its mechanisms and role in leukemia based on nanotechnology

The latest findings in iron metabolism and the newly uncovered process of ferroptosis have paved the way for new potential strategies in anti-leukemia treatments. In the current project, we reviewed and summarized the current role of nanomedicine in the treatment and diagnosis of leukemia through a comparison made between traditional approaches applied in the treatment and diagnosis of leukemia via the existing investigations about the ferroptosis molecular mechanisms involved in various anti-tumor treatments. The application of nanotechnology and other novel technologies may provide a new direction in ferroptosis-driven leukemia therapies. The article explores the potential of targeting ferroptosis, a new form of regulated cell death, as a new therapeutic strategy for leukemia. It discusses the mechanisms of ferroptosis and its role in leukemia and how nanotechnology can enhance the delivery and efficacy of ferroptosis-inducing agents. The article not only highlights the promise of ferroptosis-targeted therapies and nanotechnology in revolutionizing leukemia treatment, but also calls for further research to overcome challenges and fully realize the clinical potential of this innovative approach. Finally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities in clinical applications of ferroptosis.

Theoretical and experimental investigation on rapid and efficient adsorption characteristics of microplastics by magnetic sponge carbon

Microplastic pollution control has always been a thorny problem all over the world. Magnetic porous carbon materials have shown a good development prospect in microplastic adsorption due to their excellent adsorption performance and easy magnetic separation from water. However, the adsorption capacity and rate of magnetic porous carbon on microplastics are still not high, and the adsorption mechanism is not fully revealed, which hinders its further development. In this study, magnetic sponge carbon was prepared using glucosamine hydrochloride as the carbon source, melamine as the foaming agent, iron nitrate and cobalt nitrate as the magnetizing agents. Among them, Fe-doped magnetic sponge carbon (FeMSC) exhibited excellent adsorption performance for microplastics due to its sponge-like morphology (fluffy), strong magnetic properties (42 emu/g) and high Fe-loading (8.37 Atomic%). FeMSC could adsorb to saturation within 10 min, and the adsorption capacity of polystyrene (PS) reached as high as 369.07 mg/g in 200 mg/L microplastic solution, which was almost the fastest adsorption rate and highest adsorption capacity reported so far in the same condition. The performance of the material against external interference was also tested. FeMSC performed well in a wide pH range and different water quality, except in the strong alkaline condition. This is because the surface of microplastics and adsorbents will have many negative charges under strong alkalinity, significantly weakening the adsorption. Furthermore, theoretical calculations were innovatively used to reveal the adsorption mechanism at the molecular level. It was found that Fe-doping could form chemisorption between PS and the adsorbent, thereby significantly increasing the adsorption energy between the adsorbent and PS. The magnetic sponge carbon prepared in this study has excellent adsorption performance for microplastics and can be easily separated from water, which is a promising microplastic adsorbent.

Toxicity and Biotransformation of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials in Marine Microalgae Heterosigma akashiwo

This work is related to the environmental toxicology risk assessment and evaluation of the possible transformation of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) after contact with marine microalgae. The materials used in the study represent common and widely applied multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerene (C₆₀), graphene (Gr), and graphene oxide (GrO). The toxicity was evaluated as growth rate inhibition, esterase activity, membrane potential, and reactive oxygen species generation changes. The measurement was performed with flow cytometry after 3, 24, 96 h, and 7 days. The biotransformation of nanomaterials was evaluated after 7 days of microalgae cultivation with CNMs by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The calculated toxic level (EC₅₀ in mg/L, 96 h) of used CNMs reduced in the following order: CNTs (18.98) > GrO (76.77) > Gr (159.40) > C₆₀ (414.0). Oxidative stress and membrane depolarization were the main toxic action of CNTs and GrO. At the same time, Gr and C₆₀ decreased the toxic action with time and had no negative impact on microalgae after 7 days of exposure even at the concentration of 125 mg/L. Moreover, C₆₀ and Gr after 7 days of contact with microalgae cells obtained structural deformations.

Sulfonated magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes with enhanced bonding stability, high adsorption performance, and reusability for water remediation

In view of the simple and rapid conveniency of magnetic separation, magnetic nanocomposites had notably gained attention from researchers for environmental field applications. In this work, carboxylated magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MMWCNTs) and novel sulfonated MMWCNTs (s-MMWCNTs) were synthesized by a facile solvent-free direct doping method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray, vibrating sample magnetometer, and point of zero charge analyses confirmed the successful doping of the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles into the functionalized MWCNTs to form MMWCNTs. Besides, the bonding stabilities of both c-MMWCNTs and s-MMWCNTs were compared, and results showed that s-MMWCNTs possessed more substantial bonding stability than that of c-MMWCNTs with significantly less leaching amount of Fe₃O₄. The adsorption capacity of s-MMWCNTs was higher than that of c-MMWCNTs owing to the stronger electronegativity sulfonic group in s-MMWCNTs. Moreover, the reusability experiments proved that the adsorbent remained consistently excellent MB removal efficiency (R > 94%) even reused for twelve cycles of batch adsorption. The finding of the present work highlights the simple fabrication of novel s-MMWCNTs and its potential to be served as a promising and sustainable adsorbent for water remediation owing to its enhanced bonding stability, high adsorption performance, magnetic separability, and supreme recyclability.

The Antibacterial Properties of Nanocomposites Based on Carbon Nanotubes and Metal Oxides Functionalized with Azithromycin and Ciprofloxacin

Different microorganisms are present in nature, some of which are assumed to be hazardous to the human body. It is crucial to control their continuing growth to improve human life. Nanomaterial surface functionalization represents a current topic in continuous evolution that supports the development of new materials with multiple applications in biology, medicine, and the environment. This study focused on the antibacterial activity of different nanocomposites based on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes against four common bacterial strains. Two metal oxides (CuO and NiO) and two antibiotics (azithromycin and ciprofloxacin) were selected for the present study to obtain the following nanocomposites: MWCNT-COOH/Antibiotic, MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/Antibiotic, and MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/MO/Antibiotic. The present study included two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Ciprofloxacin (Cip) functionalized materials (MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/Cip) were most efficient against all tested bacterial strains; therefore, we conclude that Cu and Ni reduce the effects of Cip. The obtained results indicate that the nanocomposites functionalized with Cip are more effective against selected bacteria strains compared to azithromycin (Azi) functionalized nanocomposites. The current work determined the antibacterial activities of different nanocomposites and gave fresh insights into their manufacture for future research regarding environmental depollution.

Magnetic Iron Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Surface Enhancements, and Biological Challenges

This review focuses on the role of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), their physicochemical properties, their potential applications, and their association with the consequent toxicological effects in complex biologic systems. These MNPs have generated an accelerated development and research movement in the last two decades. They are solving a large portion of problems in several industries, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, water remediation, photoelectronics, and information storage, to name a few. As a result, more MNPs are put into contact with biological organisms, including humans, via interacting with their cellular structures. This situation will require a deeper understanding of these particles’ full impact in interacting with complex biological systems, and even though extensive studies have been carried out on different biological systems discussing toxicology aspects of MNP systems used in biomedical applications, they give mixed and inconclusive results. Chemical agencies, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemical substances (REACH) legislation for registration, evaluation, and authorization of substances and materials from the European Chemical Agency (ECHA), have held meetings to discuss the issue. However, nanomaterials (NMs) are being categorized by composition alone, ignoring the physicochemical properties and possible risks that their size, stability, crystallinity, and morphology could bring to health. Although several initiatives are being discussed around the world for the correct management and disposal of these materials, thanks to the extensive work of researchers everywhere addressing the issue of related biological impacts and concerns, and a new nanoethics and nanosafety branch to help clarify and bring together information about the impact of nanoparticles, more questions than answers have arisen regarding the behavior of MNPs with a wide range of effects in the same tissue. The generation of a consolidative framework of these biological behaviors is necessary to allow future applications to be manageable.

Synthesis and Characterization of MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4 and CNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO Nanocomposites: Assessment of Adsorption and Photocatalytic Performance

In this study the adsorption and photodegradation capabilities of modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), using tartrazine as a model pollutant, is demonstrated. MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄ and MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO nanocomposites were prepared by precipitation of metal oxides in the presence of MWCNTs. Their properties were examined by X-ray diffraction in powder (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron-based Scanning PhotoElectron Microscopy (SPEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. It was found that the optimal adsorption conditions were pH 4 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄ and pH 3 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO, temperature 25 °C, adsorbent dose 1 g L^-1, initial concentration of tartrazine 5 mg L^-1 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄ and 10 mg L^-1 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO and contact time 5 min for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO and 15 min for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄. Moreover, the predominant degradation process was elucidated simultaneously, with and without simulated sunlight irradiation, using thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) and UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicated the prevalence of the photodegradation mechanism over adsorption from the beginning of the degradation process.

Assessment of the Antioxidant Activity of Catechin in Nutraceuticals: Comparison between a Newly Developed Electrochemical Method and Spectrophotometric Methods

The analysis of antioxidants in different foodstuffs has become an active area of research, which has led to many recently developed antioxidant assays. Many antioxidants exhibit inherent electroactivity, and, therefore, the use of electrochemical methods could be a viable approach for evaluating the overall antioxidant activity of a matrix of nutraceuticals without the need for adding reactive species. Green tea is believed to be a healthy beverage due to a number of therapeutic benefits. Catechin, one of its constituents, is an important antioxidant and possesses free radical scavenging abilities. The present paper describes the electrochemical properties of three screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), the first one based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the second one based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and the third one based on carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles (CNTs-GNPs). All three electrodes were modified with the laccase (Lac) enzyme, using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent between the amino groups on the laccase and aldehyde groups of the reticulation agent. As this enzyme is a thermostable catalyst, the performance of the biosensors has been greatly improved. Electro-oxidative properties of catechin were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and these demonstrated that the association of CNTs with GNPs significantly improved the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor. The corresponding limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 5.6 × 10⁻⁸ M catechin at the CNT-Lac/SPE, 1.3 × 10⁻⁷ M at the GNP-Lac/SPE and 4.9 × 10⁻⁸ M at the CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE. The biosensors were subjected to nutraceutical formulations containing green tea in order to study their catechin content, using CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE, through DPV. Using a paired t-test, the catechin content estimated was in agreement with the manufacturer’s specification. In addition, the relationship between the CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE response at a specific potential and the antioxidant activity of nutraceuticals, as determined by conventional spectrophotometric methods (DPPH, galvinoxyl and ABTS), is discussed in the context of developing a fast biosensor for the relative antioxidant activity quantification.

Near real-time analysis of para-cresol in wastewater with a laccase-carbon nanotube-based biosensor

Para-Cresol is a water-soluble organic pollutant, which is harmful to organisms even at low concentrations. Therefore, it is important to rapidly detect the p-cresol in wastewater as well as natural water. In this work, a new, simple and stable biosensor was developed for on-site quantitatively determination and near real-time monitoring p-cresol in wastewater. The new biosensor was designed and fabricated using a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified by waste-derived carbon nanotubes (CNTs) immobilized with laccase (LAC). The fabrication processes and performance of the biosensors were systematically characterized and optimized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical methods. With improved conductivity, the proposed biosensor could provide the direct quantitation of p-cresol. The linear range of the biosensor is 0.2-25 ppm of p-cresol with a detection limit of 0.05 ppm. Additionally, the biosensor exhibited high reproducibility, stability and reusability during the validation. More importantly, the biosensor was successfully applied for the rapid detection of p-cresol in environmental lab wastewater under the interference of metal ions and other organics, and the results were consistent with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Finally, the biosensor with a portable potentiostat was approved as an easy-to-use, sensitive and inexpensive platform that could provide near real-time monitoring of p-cresol concentration in wastewater during Fenton oxidation treatment process.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Multiwall Carbon Nanotube Composite Materials for Batch or Chromatographic Biomolecule Separation

Carbon-based materials are the spearhead of research in multiple fields of nanotechnology. Moreover, their role as stationary phase in chromatography is gaining relevance. We investigate a material consisting of multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles towards its use as a mixed-mode chromatography material. The idea is to immobilize the ion exchange material iron oxide on CNTs as a stable matrix for chromatography processes without a significant pressure drop. Iron oxide nanoparticles are synthesized and used to decorate the CNTs via a co-precipitation route. They bind to the walls of oxidized CNTs, thereby enabling to magnetically separate the composite material. This hybrid material is investigated with transmission electron microscopy, magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, we determine its specific surface area and its wetting behavior. We also demonstrate its applicability as chromatography material for amino acid retention, describing the adsorption and desorption of different amino acids in a complex porous system surrounded by aqueous media. Thus, this material can be used as chromatographic matrix and as a magnetic batch adsorbent material due to the iron oxide nanoparticles. Our work contributes to current research on composite materials. Such materials are necessary for developing novel industrial applications or improving the performance of established processes.

Evaluation of CNT-COOH/MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposite for ibuprofen and paracetamol removal from aqueous solutions

The nanocomposite CNT-COOH/MnO₂/Fe₃O₄ was synthesized and characterized by different techniques, namely X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, magnetic measurement, point of zero charge and hydrophobicity index. Analyzes revealed the groups -COOH, MnO₂ and Fe₃O₄ attached to the carbon nanotubes, the acidic character of the obtained nanocomposite and its stability. The surface area for the obtained nanocomposite was 114.2 m² g^-1. The prepared nanocomposite was used for adsorption of ibuprofen and paracetamol from aqueous solution. Isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were determined for predicting the ibuprofen and paracetamol adsorption on synthetized nanocomposite. The equilibrium data obtained from adsorption were well represented by Langmuir model and kinetics data were well fitted by the pseudo-second order model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained for ibuprofen and paracetamol was 103.093 mg g^-1, 80.645 mg g^-1 respectively. The thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption process for both pollutants was spontaneous and endothermic. The synthetized nanocomposite can be a suitable new absorbent for ibuprofen and paracetamol removal from aqueous solutions due to its high adsorbing capacity and it can be separated by an external magnetic field.

Co-blending modification of activated coke using pyrolusite and titanium ore for low-temperature NOx removal

Activated coke (AC) has great potential in the field of low-temperature NO removal (DeNOx), especially the branch prepared by blending modification. In this study, the AC-based pyrolusite and/or titanium ore blended catalysts were prepared and applied for DeNOx. The results show blending pyrolusite and titanium ore promoted the catalytic performance of AC (Px@AC, Tix@AC) clearly, and the co-blending of two of them showed a synergistic effect. The (P/Ti-1/2)15@AC performed the highest NO conversion of 66.4%, improved 16.9% and 16.0% respectively compared with P15@AC and Ti15@AC. For the (P/Ti-1/2)15@AC DeNOx, its relative better porous structure (SBET = 364 m2/g, Vmic = 0.156 cm3/g) makes better mass transfer and more active sites exposure, stronger surface acidity (C-O, 19.43%; C=O, 4.16%) is more favorable to the NH3 adsorption, and Ti, Mn and Fe formed bridge structure fasted the lactic oxygen recovery and electron transfer. The DeNOx of (P/Ti-1/2)15@AC followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism, both the gaseous and adsorbed NO reacted with the activated NH3 due to the active sites provided by both the carbon and titanium.

Immobilization of Hg(II) on high-salinity Spirulina residue-induced biochar from aqueous solutions: Sorption and transformation mechanisms by the dual-mode isotherms

Removal of Hg(II) by biochar (BC) is a promising remediation technology. The high-salinity Spirulina residue (HSR) is a hazardous waste generated during extracting the pigment phycocyanin under high salinity conditions. Although HSR-derived BC (HSRBC) exhibited the excellent sorption capacity of Hg(II), the involved mechanisms have been rarely studied. In this study, we investigated the specific properties and Hg(II) sorption mechanisms of HSRBCs. Chloride and calcium minerals were formed in HSRBCs. Increments in carbonization temperature (from 350 to 700 °C) or time (from 90 to 540 min) led to the enhancement of aromaticity, porosity, and positive charge, but cracked oxygen-containing groups and C-N bonds. Further increase in carbonization temperature or time decreased the sorption of Hg(II). At environmentally relevant concentration of Hg(II) (2-4 mg/L), the sorption capacity (6.1-12.7 mg/g) obtained in HSRBC350 was comparable to activated carbon. Based on dual-mode isotherm, surface sorption accounted for 75-88% uptake, while precipitation accounted for 12-25% uptake. In addition, the C-O, CO, and CC groups were responsible for the monodentate/bidentate complexation and reduction, while Cl^- triggered Hg₂Cl₂ precipitation. Overall, this study provided a new insight in creating an excellent Hg(II) sorbent from hazardous waste, and revealed the sorption mechanisms for Hg(II) uptake.

Preparation of magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@polyaniline composite material and its application in adsorption and removal of tetrabromobisphenol A and decabromodiphenyl ether

Present study described a magnetic adsorption and removal method with prepared magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@polyaniline microspheres for the removal of two typical BFRs, tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) from water samples. Magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@polyaniline microspheres were prepared by a hydrothermal and two step polymerization method with cheap iron salts and aniline, which were characterized with transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the Fe₃O₄@polyaniline microspheres earned a clear thickness shell of polyaniline (about 50 nm) and a saturation magnetization of 40.4 emu g^-1. The Magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@polyaniline exhibited excellent adsorption capability and removal rate to TBBPA and BDE 209. The adsorption of TBBPA and BDE 209 all followed pseudo-second order kinetics and agreed well to the Freundlich adsorption isotherms model. The negative Gibbs free energy change (ΔG⁰) and positive standard enthalpy change (ΔH⁰) for TBBPA and BDE-209 suggested that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. These results demonstrated that Fe₃O₄@PANI was a good adsorbent and would have a good application prospect in the removal of pollutants from environmental water.

Preparation and characterization of magnetic nanomaterial and its application for removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Fe₃O₄@polyaniline, a Fe₃O₄-based magnetic core-shell material, was synthesized and its morphology and microstructure were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Polyaniline was modified onto the surface of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles by a self-assembly method based on a two-step oxidative polymerization method. The new materials exhibited good adsorption to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as fluoranthene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene from environmental water samples due to the high affinities of polyaromatic hydrocarbons to polyaniline via π-π and van der Waals interactions. The experimental results indicate that the adsorption of polyaromatic hydrocarbons follows pseudo-second order kinetics and the adsorption isotherms conform to a Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic parameters for polyaromatic hydrocarbons indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic in nature, but adsorption occurs via non-covalent interactions. This study indicated that the Fe₃O₄@polyaniline hybrid core-shell structure was proved to be a good adsorbent for polyaromatic hydrocarbons while exhibiting simple preparation, easy separation, low cost, high reusability and great potential applicability for removal of polyaromatic hydrocarbons from water.

Fabrication and characterisation of magnetic graphene oxide incorporated Fe3O4@polyaniline for the removal of bisphenol A, t-octyl-phenol, and α-naphthol from water

In this study, we fabricated a novel material composed of magnetic graphene oxide incorporated Fe₃O₄@polyaniline (Fe₃O₄@PANI-GO) using a modified Hummers' method, solvothermal, and two-step polymerisation method. The resulting products were characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that magnetic Fe₃O₄@PANI particles were successfully loaded onto the surface of the graphene oxide. Further Fe₃O₄@PANI-GO was investigated to remove bisphenol A(BPA), α-naphthol, and t-octyl-phenol (t-OP) from water samples by magnetic solid phase extraction. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe₃O₄@PANI-GO composite exhibited good adsorption capacity for t-OP, BPA, and α-naphthol, and the adsorption of these followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model, and the adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process. This work indicated that Fe₃O₄@PANI-GO earned great application prospect for removing phenolic contaminants from polluted water.

The efficiency of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes used for antibiotics removal from wastewaters generated by animal farms

In the recent years, residual antibiotics are considered to be emerging environmental pollutants due to their continuous input and persistence into the aquatic ecosystem even at low concentrations. Therefore, these are necessary to develop efficient methods for the wastewater treatment. The present paper describes the efficiency of several types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for the retention of the selected antibiotics (ampicillin, ceftazidime, cefepime, imipenem, piperacillin, tazobactam, tetracycline, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, vancomycin, gentamicin, sulfamethoxazole, and thrimetoprim) from aqueous (synthetic) solutions and wastewater samples. The functionalized MWCNTs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained antibiotic percentage of retention was evaluated by quantitative assessment using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with the diode array, fluorescence, and mass spectrometer detector (HPLC-DAD/FD/MS), after the solid-phase extraction (SPE) with Oasis HLB cartridges. The retention percentages of the selected antibiotics from waters ranged between ∼40 and 97%, with the exception of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The best percentages of retention were obtained for norfloxacin 97.03% and ciprofloxacin 97.10%. The suspensions of the MWCNTs improved the antibiotics removal from wastewaters. Removal of antibiotics from wastewaters using nanotechnology, in order to reduce their negative effects and antibiotic resistance, is a promising tool in the future wastewaters treatment.

Investigation of the H2S poisoning process for sensing composite material based on carbon nanotubes and metal oxides

The poisoning of H₂S sensing material based on the mixture of acid-treated carbon nanotubes, CuO and SnO₂ was investigated by exposing the material to high doses of H₂S (1% in volume) and following the changes spectroscopically. The presence of metal sulfides (CuS and SnS₂), sulfates and thiols was confirmed on the surface of this material as the result of H₂S poisoning. Further study revealed that leaving this material in air for extended period of time led to reoxidation of metal sulfides back to metal oxides. The formation of thiols and sulfates directly on carbon nanotubes is not reversible under these conditions; however, the extent of the overall surface reaction in this case is substantially lower than that for the composite material.

Spectroscopic studies on sidewall carboxylic acid functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with valine

The valine functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTS) were prepared and characterized by using XRD, UV-Vis, FT-IR, EPR, SEM, and EDX, spectroscopic techniques. The enhanced XRD peak (002) intensity was observed for valine functionalized MWCNTs compared with oxidized MWCNTs, which is likely due to sample purification by acid washing. UV-Vis study shows the formation of valine functionalized MWCNTs. FT-IR study confirms the presence of functional groups of oxidized MWCNTs and valine functionalized MWCNTs. The ESR line shape analysis indicates that the observed EPR line shape is a Gaussian line shape. The g-values indicate that the systems are isotropic in nature. The morphology study was carried out for oxidized MWCNTs and valine functionalized MWCNTs by using SEM. The EDX spectra revealed that the high purity of oxidized MWCNTs and valine functionalized MWCNTs. The functionalization has been chosen because, functionalization of CNTs with amino acids makes them soluble and biocompatible. Thus, they have potential applications in the field of biosensors and targeted drug delivery.
