Synthesis of Mixed-Ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF-8-90) for CO2 Adsorption

A Route to Understanding the Ethane Adsorption Selectivity of the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 in Ethane-Ethylene Mixtures

Ethylene production has a negative environmental impact, with its separation step being one of the major contributors of pollution. This has encouraged the search for energy-efficient alternatives, among which the adsorptive separation of ethane and ethylene stands out. ZIF-8 is a molecular sieve that is potentially useful for this purpose. It is selective to ethane, an exceptional property that remains unexplained. Furthermore, the adsorption of ethane and ethylene above room temperature, such as at steam cracking process outlet temperatures, has not been addressed either. This work aims to fill this knowledge gap by combining experiments at very low volumetric fillings with density-functional theory modelling methods. Adsorption isotherms of ethane and ethylene on ZIF-8 at pressures below 0.3 bar and 311 K, 333 K, and 363 K were measured using zero-length column chromatography. The low-pressure domain of the isotherms contains information on the interactions between the adsorbate molecules and the adsorbent. This favors the understanding of their macroscopic behavior from simulations at the atomic level. The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption of ethane remained constant at approximately -10 kJ/mol. In contrast, the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption of ethylene decreased from -4 kJ/mol to values akin to those of ethane as temperature increased. ZIF-8 selectivity to ethane, estimated from ideal adsorbed solution theory, decreased from 2.8 to 2.0 with increasing pressure up to 0.19 bar. Quantum mechanical modelling suggested that ethylene had minimal interactions with ZIF-8, while ethane formed hydrogen bonds with nitrogen atoms within its structure. The findings of this research are a platform for designing new systems for the adsorptive separation of ethane and ethylene and thus, reducing the environmental impact of ethylene production.

Effect of Co(II) dopant on the removal of Methylene Blue by a dense copper terephthalate

In this research, for the first time, a series of Co(II) doped copper terephthalate (CoX-CuBDC, where X is doping percentage) were successfully synthesized via solvothermal method and were tested for dye removal application. The physical properties of CoX-CuBDC were studied by several techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The incorporation of Co(II) dopant leads to isomorphic substitution of Cu(II) in the CuBDC framework with the maximum doping percentage of 22. Doping and parent MOFs which are non-porous were used for removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from aqueous solution. Adsorption capacity of Co22-CuBDC and CuBDC are 52 and 58 mg/g, respectively, both of which are higher than the adsorption capacity recorded from several high porosity MOFs. Adsorption kinetic studies indicate that adsorption process follows pseudo-second order model while the adsorption mechanism is dominated by electrostatic attraction. Overall, even though these materials show non-porous characteristic, it can be used effectively in wastewater treatment application.

Generation and Stability of the gem-Diol Forms in Imidazole Derivatives Containing Carbonyl Groups. Solid-State NMR and Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction Studies

The stability of gem-diol forms in imidazolecarboxaldehyde isomers was studied by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) combined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These methodologies also allowed determining the factors governing the occurrence of such rare functionalization in carbonyl moieties. Results indicated that the position of the carbonyl group is the main factor that governs the generation of geminal diols, having a clear and direct effect on hydration, since, under the same experimental conditions, only 36% of 5-imidazolecarboxaldehydes and 5% of 4-imidazolecarboxaldehydes were hydrated, as compared to 2-imidazolecarboxaldehydes, with which a 100% hydration was achieved. Not only did trifluoroacetic acid favor the addition of water to the carbonyl group but also it allowed obtaining single crystals. Single crystals of the gem-diol and the hemiacetal forms 2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde and N-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde, respectively, were isolated and studied through ¹H ss-NMR. Mass spectrometry and solution-state NMR experiments were also performed to study the hydration process.

Improved resolution and simplification of the spin-diffusion-based NMR method for the structural analysis of mixed-linker MOFs

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with modeling represents a powerful tool for the structural analysis of heterogeneous materials. In this contribution we describe an upgraded method, particularly suited for the structural analysis of mixed-linker metal-organic framework materials, which is based on the measurement and modeling of proton spin diffusion among constituents. We tested the method on a UiO-66-type metal-organic material, in which the organic building units were 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate anions distributed within the framework in an unknown manner. We showed that resolution of the signals of different building units could be significantly enhanced by the carbon-detected version of the proton spin-diffusion measurement. Because this kind of measurement is much more time consuming than the proton-detected measurement and because one has to carry out several two-dimensional measurements to extract spin-diffusion curves, we inspected the possibility of reducing the number of such measurements. This could be done by limiting the analysis to short mixing times, for which, as shown in this contribution, linear approximation is valid. When working in the linear regime, only a few experimental points are needed to determine the slope of spin-diffusion curves. Usage of short spin-diffusion mixing times significantly shortened the total measurement time and also markedly simplified the modeling of spin-diffusion curves.

Structural and Mechanistic Differences in Mixed-Linker Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Synthesis by Solvent Assisted Linker Exchange and de Novo Routes

Mixed-linker zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) amenable to significant property tuning by altering the functional groups on the imidazolate linkers. Solvent assisted linker exchange (SALE) and de novo synthesis of mixed-linker ZIFs have been demonstrated, but the differences in structural properties-most importantly the linker distributions-and synthesis mechanisms of these two different types of hybrid ZIFs are unknown. In this work, a combination of ¹H NMR combined rotation and multiple pulse spectroscopy (CRAMPS), water adsorption, and nitrogen measurements reveal distinct differences in linker mixing between SALE and de novo ZIF-8-90 hybrids. Native-fluorescence confocal microscopy is shown to provide a direct means to visualize these differences. The effects of crystal size, temperature, and SALE duration were studied in detail, and a generalizable mechanism for SALE processes in ZIFs is proposed. The SALE process is found to follow a diffusion-limited behavior leading to core-shell morphologies. Under harsher SALE conditions, deviations from diffusion-limited behavior are found due to etching and partial dissolution of the initial ZIF-8 crystals. With the selection of appropriate reaction conditions, SALE processes appear to be capable of generating controlled core-shell ZIF structures of good morphological quality that complement the well-mixed structures obtained by de novo methods.

On the molecular mechanisms for the H2/CO2 separation performance of zeolite imidazolate framework two-layered membranes

Double-layered zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes were fabricated inside polyimide P84 hollow fibers by a step-synthesis conducted by microfluidic technology and applied to pre-combustion gas separation. Our hypothesis, based on the information provided by a combination of molecular simulation and experiments, is that a CO2 adsorption reduction on the surface of the ZIF-9 would enhance the molecular sieving effect of this ZIF-9 layer and therefore the selectivity in the H2/CO2 mixture separation of the entire membrane. This reduction would be achieved by means of a less-CO2-adsorptive methylimidazolate-based ZIF-67 or ZIF-8 layer coating the ZIF-9. ZIF-8/ZIF-9 and ZIF-67/ZIF-9 double-layered membranes were prepared and characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, FIB, TEM and EDS. This unprecedented strategy led to a H2/CO2 separation selectivity of 9.6 together with a 250 GPU H2 permeance at 150 °C, showing a significant improvement with respect to the pure ZIF-9 membrane. Double-layered membranes also showed higher apparent CO2 activation energies than single-layered membranes, attributable to a diminished adsorption.
