High abundances of dicarboxylic acids, oxocarboxylic acids, and α-dicarbonyls in fine aerosols (PM2.5) in Chengdu, China during wintertime haze pollution

Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation Can Drive Aerosol Droplet Growth in Supersaturated Regimes

It is well known that atmospheric aerosol size and composition impact air quality, climate, and health. The aerosol composition is typically a mixture and consists of a wide range of organic and inorganic particles that interact with each other. Furthermore, water vapor is ubiquitous in the atmosphere, in indoor air, and within the human body's respiratory system, and the presence of water can alter the aerosol morphology and propensity to form droplets. Specifically, aerosol mixtures can undergo liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in the presence of water vapor. However, the experimental conditions for which LLPS impacts water uptake and the subsequent prediction of aerosol mixtures are poorly understood. To improve our understanding of aerosol mixtures and droplets, this study explores two ternary systems that undergo LLPS, namely, the 2MGA system (sucrose + ammonium sulfate + 2-methylglutaric acid) and the PEG1000 system (sucrose + ammonium sulfate + polyethylene glycol 1000). In this study, the ratio of species and the O:C ratios are systematically changed, and the hygroscopic properties of the resultant aerosol were investigated. Here, we show that the droplet activation above 100% RH of the 2MGA system was influenced by LLPS, while the droplet activation of the PEG1000 system was observed to be linearly additive regardless of chemical composition, O:C ratio, and LLPS. A theoretical model that accounts for LLPS with O:C ratios was developed and predicts the water uptake of internally mixed systems of different compositions and phase states. Hence, this study provides a computationally efficient algorithm to account for the LLPS and solubility parameterized by the O:C ratio for droplet activation at supersaturated relative humidity conditions and may thus be extended to mixed inorganic-organic aerosol populations with unspeciated organic composition found in the ambient environment.

Molecular tracers, mass spectral tracers and oxidation of organic aerosols emitted from cooking and fossil fuel burning sources

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) composes a substantial fraction of atmospheric particles, yet the formation and aging mechanism of SOA remains unclear. Here we investigate the initial oxidation of primary organic aerosol (POA) and further aging of SOA in winter Beijing by using aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) measurements along with offline molecular tracer analysis. Multilinear engine (ME-2) source apportionment was conducted to capture the characteristic of source-related SOA, and connect them with specific POA. Our results show that urban cooking and fossil fuel burning sources contribute significantly (17 % and 20 %) to total organic aerosol (OA) in winter Beijing. Molecular tracer analysis by two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC × GC-ToF-MS) reveals that cooking SOA (CSOA) is produced through both photooxidation and aqueous-phase processing, while less oxidized SOA (LO-SOA) is the photooxidation product of fossil fuel burning OA (FFOA) and may experience aqueous-phase aging to form more-oxidized oxygenated OA (MO-OOA). Furthermore, CHO_{m/z 69} and CHO_{m/z 85} are mass spectral tracers indicating the initial photooxidation, while CHO₂⁺ and C₂H₂O₂⁺ imply further aqueous-phase aging of OA. Tracer analysis indicates that the formation of diketones is involved in the initial photooxidation of POA, while the formation of glyoxal and diacids is involved in the further aqueous-phase aging of SOA.

Molecular characterization and spatial distribution of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds in fresh snow in China

Low molecular weight organic compounds are ubiquitous in the atmosphere. However, knowledge on their concentrations and molecular distribution in fresh snow remains limited. Here, twelve fresh snow samples collected at eight sites in China were investigated for dicarboxylic acids and related compounds (DCRCs) including oxocarboxylic acids and α-dicarbonyls. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in the snow samples ranged from 0.99 to 14.6 mg C L^-1. Concentrations of total dicarboxylic acids were from 225 to 1970 μg L^-1 (av. 650 μg L^-1), while oxoacids (28.3-173, av. 68.1 μg L^-1) and dicarbonyls (12.6-69.2, av. 31.3 μg L^-1) were less abundant, accounting for 4.6-8.5% (6.2%), 0.45-1.4% (0.73%), and 0.12-0.88% (0.46%) of DOC, respectively. Molecular patterns of dicarboxylic acids are characterized by a predominance of oxalic acid (C₂) (95.0-1030, av. 310 μg L^-1), followed by phthalic (Ph) (9.69-244, av. 69.9 μg L^-1) or succinic (C₄) (23.8-163, av. 63.7 μg L^-1) acid. Higher concentrations of Ph in snow from Beijing and Tianjin than other urban and rural regions suggest significant emissions from vehicular exhausts and other fossil fuel combustion sources in megacities. C₂ constituted 40-54% of total diacids, corresponding to 1.5-2.6% of snow DOC. The total measured DCRCs represent 5.5-10% of snow DOC, which suggests that there are large amounts of unknown organics requiring further investigations. The spatial distributions of diacids exhibited higher loadings in megacities than rural and island sites. Molecular distributions of diacids indicated that the photochemical modification was restrained under the weak solar radiation during the snow events, while anthropogenic primary sources had a more significant influence in megacities than rural areas and islands.

Characterization of dicarboxylic acids, oxoacids, and α-dicarbonyls in PM2.5 within the urban boundary layer in southern China: Sources and formation pathways

Low-molecular-weight dicarboxylic acids, which are important components of secondary organic aerosols, have been extensively studied in recent years. Many studies have focused on ground-level observations and literature reports on the vertical distribution of the organic aerosols within the urban boundary layer are limited. In this study, the vertical profiles of dicarboxylic acids and related organic compounds (DCRCs) in PM_2.5 were investigated at altitudinal levels (ground level and 488 m above the ground level) at the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, southern China, to elucidate their primary sources and secondary formation processes. The concentrations of DCRCs at ground level were generally higher than those at 488 m. Oxalic acid (C₂) was the most abundant species, followed by succinic acid (C₄) and malonic acid (C₃) at both heights. The higher ratio of DCRCs-bound carbon to organic carbon (i.e., DCRCs-C/OC) at 488 m (4.8 ± 1.2%) relative to that at ground level (2.7 ± 0.5%) indicated a higher degree of aerosol aging at 488 m. The abundance of C₂ was increased and the conversion of C₄ to C₃ was enhanced due to the photochemical oxidation of its homologues during long-range transport periods. The increase in C₂ was associated with in-cloud processes during pollution periods. Principal component analysis showed that DCRCs were mainly derived from atmospheric secondary processing and biomass burning was also an important source of long-chain carboxylic acids during autumn in Guangzhou. Our results illustrate that secondary processing and biomass burning play prominent roles in controlling the abundance of DCRCs. Furthermore, DCRCs are affected by air masses from regional areas, oxidation of their precursors via vertical transport and in-cloud processes.

Characteristics of Particulate Matter at Different Pollution Levels in Chengdu, Southwest of China

Air pollution is becoming increasingly serious along with social and economic development in the southwest of China. The distribution characteristics of particle matter (PM) were studied in Chengdu from 2016 to 2017, and the changes of PM bearing water-soluble ions and heavy metals and the distribution of secondary ions were analyzed during the haze episode. The results showed that at different pollution levels, heavy metals were more likely to be enriched in fine particles and may be used as a tracer of primary pollution sources. The water-soluble ions in PM2.5 were mainly Sulfate-Nitrate-Ammonium (SNA) accounting for 43.02%, 24.23%, 23.50%, respectively. SO42−, NO3−, NH4+ in PM10 accounted for 34.56%, 27.43%, 19.18%, respectively. It was mainly SO42− in PM at Clean levels (PM2.5 = 0~75 μg/m3, PM10 = 0~150 μg/m3), and mainly NH4+ and NO3− at Light-Medium levels (PM2.5 = 75~150 μg/m3, PM10 = 150~350 μg/m3). At Heavy levels (PM2.5 = 150~250 μg/m3, PM10 = 350~420 μg/m3), it is mainly SO42− in PM2.5, and mainly NH4+ and NO3− in PM10. The contribution of mobile sources to the formation of haze in the study area was significant. SNA had significant contributions to the PM during the haze episode, and more attention should be paid to them in order to improve air quality.

One-year characterization of organic aerosol markers in urban Beijing: Seasonal variation and spatiotemporal comparison

Organic aerosol (OA) is a major component of fine particulate matter (PM); however, only 10%-30% of OA have been identified as individual compounds, and some are used as markers to trace the sources and formation mechanisms of OA. The temporal and spatial coverage of these OA markers nonetheless remain inadequately characterized. This study presents a year-long measurement of 92 organic markers in PM_2.5 samples collected at an urban site in Beijing from 2014 to 2015. Saccharides were the most abundant (340.1 ng m^-3) species detected, followed by phthalic acids (283.4 ng m^-3). In summer, high proportions (8%-24%) of phthalic acids, n-alkanes, fatty acids, and n-alcohols indicate dominant contributions of biogenic emission and atmospheric oxidation to OA in Beijing. In winter, when anthropogenic sources prevail, saccharides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and hopanes are more prominent (4%-25%). The spatial distributions of these OA markers in China show higher concentrations in northern cities (mainly from coal combustion and biomass burning) than in southern cities (mainly from vehicular emission). The inter-annual variations of OA markers, except for hopanes, from 2001 to 2015 suggest significant alleviation of the primary OA pollution in Beijing, with an average reduction of 35%-89% compared with those before 2008. The diagnostic ratio analyses between OA markers indicate that contributions from coal combustion and biomass burning decreased, whereas those from vehicular emission increased. Increasingly large vehicle fleets have increased hopane concentrations since 2008, but the levels were 35% lower in 2015 than those in 2010-2011 because of the tightening of emission controls for vehicles. This study provides a long-term and geographical comparison (from Beijing to other locations in China and beyond) of OA markers, demonstrating the temporal and spatial variations in primary OA, and calls for more studies on secondary OA.

Characteristics of water-soluble organic acids in PM2.5 during haze and Chinese Spring Festival in winter of Jinan, China: concentrations, formations, and source apportionments

PM_2.5 aerosols from Jinan (36°256'N, 117°106'E) in the North China Plain region were investigated for water-soluble organic acids (WSOAs, i.e., oxalic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, methanesulfonic acid (MSA), and lactic acid) during 30 December 2016 to 21 February 2017. The average PM_2.5 concentration was 168.77 μg/m³ with about 90.74% samples beyond the National Ambient Air Quality (NAAQ) standards (Grade II). The total concentration of the measured WSOAs averaged at 1.34 μg/m³, contributing to 0.80% of PM_2.5 mass. In the observation, acetic acid was the most abundant WSOA, followed by oxalic acid, lactic acid, formic acid, and MSA. During the period, serious haze events frequently happened. The average concentrations of PM_2.5 and every WSOA species were higher in haze than those in non-haze. The correlations among species suggested that WSOAs in haze had complicated sources and secondary pathways, especially aqueous-phase reactions which played an important role on WSOAs. The concentrations of WSOAs declined in the Spring Festival compared with those in the non-Spring Festival due to holiday effect. Fireworks burning during the Spring Festival had different influences on WSOAs with slight increases for acetic acid and lactic acid. Five source factors were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for five WSOAs, respectively, and the results revealed that secondary reactions were the main sources of WSOAs in haze.

Molecular characteristics and stable carbon isotope compositions of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds in the urban atmosphere of the North China Plain: Implications for aqueous phase formation of SOA during the haze periods

In the past five years, Chinese government has promulgated stringent measures to mitigate air pollution. However, PM_2.5 levels in the China North Plain (NCP), which is one of the regions with the heaviest air pollution in the world, are still far beyond the World Health Organization (WHO) standard. To improve our understanding on the sources and formation mechanisms of haze in the NCP, PM_2.5 samples were collected during the winter of 2017 on a day/night basis at the urban site of Liaocheng, which is one of the most polluted cities in the NCP. The samples were determined for molecular distributions and stable carbon isotope compositions of dicarboxylic acids and their precursors (ketocarboxylic acids and α-dicarbonyls), levoglucosan, elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). Our results showed that oxalic acid (C₂) is the dominant dicarboxylic acid, followed by succinic acid (C₄) and malonic acid (C₃), and glyoxylic acid (ωC₂) is the most abundant ketocarboxylic acids. Concentrations of C₂, glyoxal (Gly) and methylglyoxal (mGly) presented robust correlations with levoglucosan, suggesting that biomass burning is a significant source of PM_2.5 in the NCP. Moreover, C₂ and Gly and mGly linearly correlated with SO₄^2-, relative humidity (RH), aerosol liquid water content (LWC) as well as particle in-situ pH (pH_is), indicating that aqueous-phase oxidation is the major formation pathway of these SOA, and is driven by acid-catalyzed oxidation. Concentrations and relative abundances of secondary species including SNA (SO₄^2-, NO₃^- and NH₄⁺), dicarboxylic acids, and aerosol LWC in PM_2.5 are much higher in the haze periods than in the clean periods, suggesting that aqueous reaction is a vital role in the haze formation. In comparison with those in the clean periods, stable carbon isotopic compositions (δ¹³C) of major dicarboxylic acids and related SOA and the mass ratios of C₂/diacids, C₂/Gly and C₂/mGly are higher in the haze periods, indicating that haze particles were more aged and enriched in secondary species.

Sub-Mode Aerosol Volume Size Distribution and Complex Refractive Index from the Three-Year Ground-Based Measurements in Chengdu China

Chengdu is a typical basin city of Southwest China with rare observations of remote sensing measurements. To assess the climate change and establish a region aerosol model, a deeper understanding of the separated volume size distribution (VSD) and complex refractive index (CRI) is required. In this study, we employed the sub-mode VSD and CRI in Chengdu based on the three years observation data to investigate the sub-mode characteristics and climate effects. The annual average fraction of the fine-mode aerosol optical depth (AODf) is 92%, which has the same monthly tendency as the total AOD. But the coarse-mode aerosol optical depth (AODc) has little variation in different months. There are four distinguishing modes of VSD in Chengdu; the median radii are 0.17 μm ± 0.05, 0.31 μm ± 0.12, 1.62 μm ± 0.45, 3.25 μm ± 0.99, respectively. The multi-year average and seasonal variations of fine- and coarse-mode VSD and CRI are also analyzed to characterize aerosols over this region. The fine-mode single scattering albedos (SSAs) are higher than the coarse-mode ones, which suggests that the coarse-mode aerosols have a stronger absorbing effect on solar light than the small-size aerosol particles in Chengdu.

The potential role of malonic acid in the atmospheric sulfuric acid - Ammonia clusters formation

Malonic acid (MOA), one of the major dicarboxylic acids (DCAs) in aerosols, has been identified experimentally and computationally to be a strong acid. However, its potential role in the atmospheric clusters formation is still ambiguous. Hence, the participant mechanism of MOA on the formation of atmospheric sulfuric acid (SA)- ammonia (A) clusters was investigated by combining computational methods with atmospheric cluster dynamics code (ACDC). The most stable molecular structures obtained at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory shows that the added MOA molecule in the SA-A-based clusters presents a promotion on the interactions between SA and A molecules. ACDC simulations indicate directly an obvious enhancement strength R_MOA on the clusters formation rates at 218 K and the concentration of MOA ([MOA]) larger than 10⁸ molecules cm^-3, up to five orders of magnitude. Meanwhile, enhancement strength of MOA is compared with that of glycolic acid, and as expected, MOA presents a superior enhancement strength. Both R_MOA and the compared enhancement strength (r_com) present a positive dependency on [MOA] and a negative dependency on [SA]. With the increase of [A], both R_MOA and r_com (except at [SA] = 10⁴ molecules cm^-3) first increase, reaching the maximum value and then decrease. Finally, a catalytic participant mechanism of MOA where MOA acts as a mediate bridge for the formation of pure SA-A-based clusters has been identified by tracing the main growth pathways of the system.

Dicarboxylic acids and levoglucosan in aerosols from Indo-Gangetic Plain: Inferences from day night variability during wintertime

This study assesses daytime and nighttime atmospheric abundance and molecular distribution of dicarboxylic acids (DCA: C₂-C₁₀) and biomass burning tracers (levoglucosan and biomass burning derived potassium: K⁺_BB) in PM₁₀ (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter≤10μm) from an urban location, Kanpur (in central Indo-Gangetic Plain: IGP) during wintertime (December 2015-February 2016). In this study, PM₁₀ varied from 130 to 242 and 175-388μgm^-3 during daytime and nighttime, respectively. The average ratios of OC/EC (day: 12.3; night: 9.3) and WSOC/OC (day: 0.74; night: 0.48) were relatively high during daytime (OC: organic carbon; EC: elemental carbon; WSOC: water-soluble organic carbon). Strong linear correlations (R²≥0.6; p<0.05) of OC with levoglucosan and K⁺_BB suggest biomass burning emission as predominant source of organic aerosols over the IGP. The measured concentrations of total DCA (ΣC₂-C₁₀) showed pronounced diurnal variability with a higher concentration during nighttime (2510±1025ngm^-3) as compared to that in daytime (1499±562ngm^-3). Concentrations of oxalic acid (C₂), succinic acid (C₄) and malonic acid (C₃) were predominantly high as compared to other congeners of DCA (C₂-C₁₀) over central IGP. Relatively higher mass fraction (73.4%) of C₂ in total DCA during nighttime than that in daytime (61.5%) indicates role of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) formation involving aqueous-phase chemistry. Strong linear correlations of C₂ with C₃ and C₄ plausibly suggest that C₂ can have predominant formation pathways via decomposition of higher congeners of DCA. Overall, strong linear correlations of C₂ with levoglucosan and sulphate suggest that biomass burning emission and secondary transformations are predominant sources of DCA over IGP during wintertime.

Gas-phase hydration of glyoxylic acid: Kinetics and atmospheric implications

Oxocarboxylic acids are one of the most important organic species found in secondary organic aerosols and can be detected in diverse environments. But the hydration of oxocarboxylic acids in the atmosphere has still not been fully understood. Neglecting the hydration of oxocarboxylic acids in atmospheric models may be one of the most important reasons for the significant discrepancies between field measurements and abundance predictions of atmospheric models for oxocarboxylic acids. In the present paper, glyoxylic acid, as the most abundant oxocarboxylic acids in the atmosphere, has been selected as an example to study whether the hydration process can occur in the atmosphere and what the kinetic process of hydration is. The gas-phase hydration of glyoxylic acid to form the corresponding geminal diol and those catalyzed by atmospheric common substances (water, sulfuric acid and ammonia) have been investigated at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVDZ-F12//M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. The contour map of electron density difference of transition states have been further analyzed. It is indicated that these atmospheric common substances can all catalyze on the hydration to some extent and sulfuric acid is the most effective reducing the Gibbs free energy of activation to 9.48 kcal/mol. The effective rate constants combining the overall rate constants and concentrations of the corresponding catalysts have shown that water and sulfuric acid are both important catalysts and the catalysis of sulfuric acid is the most effective for the gas-phase hydration of glyoxylic acid. This catalyzed processes are potentially effective in coastal regions and polluted regions.
