Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) pollution leads to reduced crop yields and poses a threat to human health, making it an important environmental and agricultural safety issue. Selenium [Se(IV)] has been shown to alleviate Cd stress in plants; however, the mechanisms underlying Se-mediated protection against Cd toxicity remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological and molecular mechanisms of Se(IV)-alleviated Cd toxicity in strawberry plants through physio-biochemical and transcriptomic analyses. Our results showed that foliar spraying with Se(IV) increased photosynthetic efficiency, reduced Cd-induced oxidative damage by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities and soluble sugar contents, thereby improving Cd stress tolerance. Transcriptomic profiling revealed 477 common differentially accumulated transcripts (DATs), predominantly enriched in transporter activity, oxidoreductase function, and antioxidant-related processes. Notably, seven key genes involved in Cd efflux, chelation, secondary metabolite transport and nutrient uptake (FvPCR9-like, FvCBP-like, FvWAT1-like, FvMOT1, FvYW_6g02140, FvNRT2.1 and FvZIP8) exhibited opposite expression patterns under Se(IV) and Cd treatments. Supplementation with Se(IV) also modulated phytohormone signaling, nitrogen metabolism and carbon metabolism pathways, providing a multi-dimensional approach to mitigating Cd-induced physiological disruptions. This study provides novel insights into Se(IV)-mediated Cd stress adaptation, and offers promising strategies for developing low-Cd-accumulating crops, addressing critical environmental and agricultural challenges associated with heavy metal contamination.

Abstract
Arsenic migration from soil to crop plants and subsequently human consumption of contaminated foodstuffs is a serious threat for society. In the present study, two oxidation states of selenium [Se(0) and Se(VI)] were used to check their efficacy towards amelioration of arsenic toxicity in chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.). Three different concentrations (1, 5, and 10 mg/L) of both oxidation states of selenium were applied separately and in combination against a fixed dose (10 mg/L) of arsenic [(As(V)] treatment on chickpea seedlings. Further, seed germination and seedling growth attributes, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defense under different treatments were analyzed. The changes in anatomical structures and arsenic accumulation in different parts of seedlings were also studied. Results revealed that increased generation of oxidative stress affected physiobiochemical parameters of seedlings and diminished plant growth and deformation in vascular bundles under arsenic stress. However, the combined application of Se with As showed overall improvement in seedling growth, reduced oxidative stress, and organized vascular bundles of chickpea seedlings as compared to arsenic stress alone. The arsenic uptake and accumulation in chickpea seedlings were also reduced upon supplementation of Se. The highest reduction of arsenic accumulation by 42 and 56 % in roots, while 47 and 58 % in shoots were recorded by the application of 10 mg/L of Se(0) and Se (VI) under As stress, respectively. Overall, Se(VI) showed much better performance towards the minimization of arsenic-induced phytotoxicity and arsenic accumulation as compared to Se(0). Therefore, this study explored the efficacy of different forms of selenium towards the mitigation of arsenic toxicity in plants.

Abstract
Arsenic pollution in paddy fields has become a public concern by seriously threatening rice growth, food security and human health. In this review, we delve into the biogeochemical behaviors of arsenic in paddy soil-rice system, systemically revealing the complexity of its migration and transformation processes, including the release of arsenic from soil to porewater, uptake and translocation of arsenic by rice plants, as well as transformation of arsenic species mediated by microorganism. Especially, microbial processes like reduction, oxidation and methylation of arsenic, and the coupling of arsenic with carbon, iron, sulfur, nitrogen cycling through microbes and related mechanisms were highlighted. Environmental factors like pH, redox potential, organic matter, minerals, nutrient elements, microorganisms and periphyton significantly influence these processes through different pathways, which are discussed in this review. Furthermore, the current progress in remediation strategies, including agricultural interventions, passivation, phytoremediation and microbial remediation is explored, and their potential and limitations are analyzed to address the gaps. This review offers comprehensive perspectives on the complicated behaviors of arsenic and influence factors in paddy soil-rice system, and provides a scientific basis for developing effective arsenic pollution control strategies.

Abstract
Addressing cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural lands is crucial, given its health implications and accumulation in crops. This study used pot experiments to evaluate the impact of foliar selenium spray (Se) (0.40 mM), corn straw biochar (1%), and pig manure (1%) on the growth of rice plants, the accumulation of Cd in rice grain, and to examine their influence on health risk indices associated with Cd exposure. The treatments were designated as follows: a control group without any amendment (CK), biochar (T1), pig manure (T2), Se (T3), Se and biochar (T4), Se and pig manure (T5), and Se along with biochar and pig manure (T6). Our results indicated that the treatments affected soil pH and redox potential and improved growth and the nitrogen and phosphorus content in rice plants. The soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) meter readings of leaves during the tillering stage indicated a 5.27%-15.86% increase in treatments T2 to T6 compared to CK. The flag leaves of T2 exhibited increases of 12.06%-38.94% for electrolyte leakage and an 82.61%-91.60% decline in SOD compared to treatments T3 to T6. Treatments T1 to T6 increased protein content; however, amylose content was significantly reduced in T6. Treatment T6 recorded the lowest Cd concentration in rice grains (0.018 mg/kg), while T2 recorded the highest (0.051 mg/kg). The CK treatment group showed a grain Cd content reduction of 29.30% compared to T2. The assessment of acceptable daily intake, hazard quotient, and carcinogenic risk revealed an ascending order as follows: T6 < T3 < T5 < T4 < T1 < CK < T2. In conclusion, the application of treatment T6 demonstrates the potential to lower oxidative stress, enhance production, reduce cancer risk, and ensure the safe cultivation of rice in environments affected by Cd contamination.

Abstract
Kale is a functional food with anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anemia prevention properties. The harmful effects of the emerging pollutant microplastic (MP) on plants have been widely studied, but there is limited research how to mitigate MP damage on plants. Numerous studies have shown that Se is involved in regulating plant resistance to abiotic stresses. The paper investigated impact of MP and Se on kale growth, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, phytochemicals, and endogenous hormones. Results revealed that MP triggered a ROS burst, which led to breakdown of antioxidant system in kale, and had significant toxic effects on photosynthetic system, biomass, and accumulation of secondary metabolites, as well as a significant decrease in IAA and a significant increase in GA. Under MP supply, Se mitigated the adverse effects of MP on kale by increasing photosynthetic pigment content, stimulating function of antioxidant system, enhancing secondary metabolite synthesis, and modulating hormonal networks.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for both human and animals. Plants serve as the primary source of Se in the food chain. Se concentration and availability in plants is influenced by soil properties and environmental conditions. Optimal Se levels promote plant growth and enhance stress tolerance, while excessive Se concentration can result in toxicity. Se enhances plants ROS scavenging ability by promoting antioxidant compound synthesis. The ability of Se to maintain redox balance depends upon ROS compounds, stress conditions and Se application rate. Furthermore, Se-dependent antioxidant compound synthesis is critically reliant on plant macro and micro nutritional status. As these nutrients are fundamental for different co-factors and amino acid synthesis. Additionally, phytohormones also interact with Se to promote plant growth. Hence, utilization of phytohormones and modified crop nutrition can improve Se-dependent crop growth and plant stress tolerance. This review aims to explore the assimilation of Se into plant proteins, its intricate effect on plant redox status, and the specific interactions between Se and phytohormones. Furthermore, we highlight the proposed physiological and genetic mechanisms underlying Se-mediated phytohormone-dependent plant growth modulation and identified research opportunities that could contribute to sustainable agricultural production in the future.

Abstract
Influence of supplementation of selenium (Se, 1 and 5 µM) and silicon (Si, 0.1 and 0.5 mM) was investigated in wheat under arsenic (30 µM As) stress. Plants grown under As stress exhibited a significant decline in growth parameters however, Se and Si supplementation mitigated the decline significantly. Treatment of Se and Si alleviated the reduction in the intermediate components of chlorophyll biosynthesis pathway and the content of photosynthetic pigments. Arsenic stressed plants exhibited increased reactive oxygen species accumulation and the NADPH oxidase activity which were lowered significantly due to Se and Si treatments. Moreover, Se and Si supplementation reduced lipid peroxidation and activity of lipoxygenase and protease under As stress. Supplementation of Se and Si significantly improved the antioxidant activities and the content of cysteine, tocopherol, reduced glutathione and ascorbic acid. Treatment of Se and Si alleviated the reduction in nitrate reductase activity. Exogenously applied Se and Si mitigated the reduction in mineral elements and reduced As accumulation. Hence, supplementation of Se and Si is beneficial in preventing the alterations in growth and metabolism of wheat under As stress.

Abstract
Arsenic (As), one of the major pollutants in the soil, is an important environmental concern as its consumption can cause adverse health symptoms in living organisms. Its contamination of rice grown over As-contaminated areas is a serious concern in South Asian countries. Selenium (Se) has been reported to influence various osmolytes under metal stress in plants. The present study reports the role of Se in mitigating As stress in rice by modulating osmolyte metabolism. Rice plants grown in As-amended soil (2.5-10 mg kg-1) in pots were treated with sodium selenate (0.5-1.0 mg Se kg-1 soil) in glass house conditions and leaf samples were collected at 60 and 90 days after sowing (DAS). As-treated rice leaves displayed a reduction in relative water content (RWC) and dry weight than control with a maximum reduction of 1.68- and 2.47-fold in RWC and 1.95- and 1.69-fold in dry weight in As10 treatment at 60 and 90 DAS, respectively. Free amino acids (1.38-2.26-fold), proline (3.88-3.93-fold), glycine betaine (GB) (1.27-1.72-fold), choline (1.67-3.1-fold), total soluble sugars (1.29-1.61-fold), and reducing sugars (1.67-2.19-fold) increased in As-treated rice leaves as compared to control at both stages. As stress increased the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), putrescine content, and glutamate decarboxylase activity whereas diamine oxidase and polyamine oxidase activities declined by 1.69-1.88-fold and 1.52-1.86-fold, respectively. Se alone or in combination with As improved plant growth, RWC, GB, choline, putrescine, and sugars; lowered proline and GABA; and showed a reverse trend of enzyme activities related to their metabolism than respective As treatments. As stress resulted in a higher accumulation of osmolytes to combat its stress which was further modulated by the Se application. Hence, the current investigation suggested the role of osmoprotectants in Se-induced amelioration of As toxicity in rice plants.

Abstract
Agricultural productivity is constantly being forced to maintain yield stability to feed the enormously growing world population. However, shrinking arable and nutrient-deprived soil and abiotic and biotic stressor (s) in different magnitudes put additional challenges to achieving global food security. Though well-defined, the concept of macro, micronutrients, and beneficial elements is from a plant nutritional perspective. Among various micronutrients, selenium (Se) is essential in small amounts for the life cycle of organisms, including crops. Selenium has the potential to improve soil health, leading to the improvement of productivity and crop quality. However, Se possesses an immense encouraging phenomenon when supplied within the threshold limit, also having wide variations. The supplementation of Se has exhibited promising outcomes in lessening biotic and abiotic stress in various crops. Besides, bulk form, nano-Se, and biogenic-Se also revealed some merits and limitations. Literature suggests that the possibilities of biogenic-Se in stress alleviation and fortifying foods are encouraging. In this article, apart from adopting a combination of a conventional extensive review of the literature and bibliometric analysis, the authors have assessed the journey of Se in the "soil to spoon" perspective in a diverse agroecosystem to highlight the research gap area. There is no doubt that the time has come to seriously consider the tag of beneficial elements associated with Se, especially in the drastic global climate change era.

Abstract
As a result of the climate changes that are getting worse nowadays, drought stress (DS) is a major obstacle during crop life stages, which ultimately reduces tomato crop yields. So, there is a need to adopt modern approaches like a novel nutrient- and antioxidant-based formulation (NABF) for boosting tomato crop productivity. NABF consists of antioxidants (i.e., citric acid, salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, glutathione, and EDTA) and nutrients making it a fruitful growth stimulator against environmental stressors. As a first report, this study was scheduled to investigate the foliar application of NABF on growth and production traits, physio-biochemical attributes, water use efficiency (WUE), and nutritional, hormonal, and antioxidative status of tomato plants cultivated under full watering (100% of ETc) and DS (80 or 60% of ETc). Stressed tomato plants treated with NABF had higher DS tolerance through improved traits of photosynthetic efficiency, leaf integrity, various nutrients (i.e., copper, zinc, manganese, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen), and hormonal contents. These positives were a result of lower levels of oxidative stress biomarkers as a result of enhanced osmoprotectants (soluble sugars, proline, and soluble protein), and non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant activities. Growth, yield, and fruit quality traits, as well as WUE, were improved. Full watering with application of 2.5 g NABF L-1 collected 121 t tomato fruits per hectare as the best treatment. Under moderate DS (80% of ETc), NABF application increased fruit yield by 10.3%, while, under severe DS (40% of ETc), the same fruit yield was obtained compared to full irrigation without NABF. Therefore, the application of 60% ETc × NABF was explored to not only give a similar yield with higher quality compared to 100% ETc without NABF as well as increase WUE.

Abstract
Rice can accumulate more organic and inorganic arsenic (iAs) than other crop plants. In this study, the localization of As in rice grains was investigated using High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) based on 26 rice varieties collected from two provinces. In all the samples, the total As contents in polished rice were 0.03-0.37 mg/kg, with average values of 0.28 and 0.21 mg/kg for two sample sets. The results of the determination of arsenic speciation in different components of rice grain showed that in the polished and brown rice the mean value of arsenite (As(III)) was nearly twice than that of arsenate (As(V)). The regional difference was observed in both total As contents and As speciation. The reason may be that As(III) is more mobile than As(V) in a dissociated form and because of soil properties, rice varieties, and the growing environment. The proportion of iAs and the total As in rice bran was higher than that in polished rice, and this is because As tends accumulate between the husk and the endosperm. In our study, selenium could alleviate the risk of arsenic toxicity at the primary stage of rice growth. Co-exposure to As and Se in germinated rice indicated that the reduction in As accumulation in polished rice reached 73.8%, 76.8%, and 78.3% for total As, As(III), and As(V) when compared with rice treated with As alone. The addition of Se (0.3 mg/kg) along with As significantly reduced the As amount in different parts of germinated rice. Our results indicated that Se biofortification could alleviate the As accumulation and toxicity in rice crops.

Abstract
Arsenic (As) and Cadmium (Cd) are toxic to rice plants. However, selenium (Se) has the potential to regulate As and Cd toxicity. The present study aimed to evaluate the co-exposure to As5+ and Se6+ species in two rice cultivars, BRS Pampa and EPAGRI 108. The plants were divided into six groups and cultivated until complete maturation of the grains, under greenhouse conditions. Regarding total As and inorganic As (i-As) accumulation in grains, the highest concentrations were found for BRS Pampa. For Se, EPAGRI 108 presented the highest concentration of inorganic and organic Se (i-Se and o-Se). The exposure assessments showed that Se biofortification can mitigate the As accumulation in rice and, consequently, the risk of As and Cd toxicity in grains for human consumption. The combined effect of As and Se in rice plants could represent an alternative to biofortify this food in a safe way and with a higher percentage of bioavailable Se. Although Se is able to mitigate As toxicity in rice plants, in the present study we showed that co-exposure in different cultivars under the same growing conditions may present different responses to As and Se exposure.
