Abstract
Screening initiatives for osteoporosis must facilitate treatment of those at elevated fracture risk. In a randomized controlled trial of 24,229 women, those in the screening group with FRAX ≥ 15% were invited for DXA with AOM treatment offered as per national guidelines. Treatment initiation in the following year was 9.5 times higher compared with controls. PURPOSE To determine if screened individuals have lower adherence to anti-osteoporotic medication (AOM) than unscreened and to examine determinants for low treatment adherence. METHOD In 2010/2011, women aged 65-80 (N = 34,229) in the Region of Southern Denmark were invited to the risk-stratified osteoporosis strategy evaluation (ROSE) randomized study. Women in the screening group with moderate to high 10-year fracture risk (FRAX® ≥ 15%) were invited for dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry with AOM treatment as per national guidelines. Screened, controls, and an age-matched general population sample were compared for adherence to AOM using 10-year follow-up data on prescription and hospital records. RESULTS Among ROSE participants with FRAX ≥ 15%, 5864 screened and 5790 controls were eligible for analysis, along with an equal number from the general population. AOM initiation in the first year was 9.5 times higher in screened compared to controls (HR 9.50, 7.16; 12.61). There was no difference in implementation assessed as medication possession ratio. The 5-year persistence rates were similar in screened and controls (51-52%), but lower in the general population (44%). FRAX risk factors partly influenced AOM initiation in the screened, with different patterns in other groups. Immobilization, comorbidities, and co-medications were key determinants of discontinuation in both the short and long term. CONCLUSION The ROSE screening programme significantly increased treatment initiation in postmenopausal women. Screened women showed similar treatment adherence levels to non-screened once they started medication. However, frail women were more prone to treatment discontinuation, highlighting the need for targeted support in this subgroup. Abstract
Background Osteoporotic fractures pose a growing public health concern. Osteoporosis is underdiagnosed and undertreated, highlighting the necessity of systematic screening programs. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a two-step population-based osteoporotic screening program. Methods This ten-year follow-up of the Risk-stratified Osteoporosis Strategy Evaluation (ROSE) randomized trial tested the effectiveness of a screening program utilizing the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) for major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) to select women for dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan following standard osteoporosis treatment. Women residing in the Region of Southern Denmark, aged 65-80, were randomised (single masked) into a screening or a control group by a computer program prior to inclusion and subsequently approached with a mailed questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire data, women in the screening group with a FRAX value ≥15% were invited for DXA scanning. The primary outcome was MOF derived from nationwide registers. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01388244, status: Completed. Findings All randomised women were included February 4, 2010-January 8, 2011, the same day as approached to participate. During follow-up, 7355 MOFs were observed. No differences in incidences of MOF were identified, comparing the 17,072 women in the screening group with the 17,157 controls in the intention-to-treat analysis (IRR 1.01, 0.95; 1.06). However, per-protocol, women DXA-scanned exhibited a 14% lower incidence of MOF (IRR 0.86, 0.78; 0.94) than controls with a FRAX value ≥15%. Similar trends were observed for hip fractures, all fractures, and mortality. Interpretation While the ROSE program had no overall effect on osteoporotic fracture incidence or mortality it showed a preventive effect for women at moderate to high risk who underwent DXA scans. Hence the overall effect might have been diluted by those who were not at an intervention level threshold risk or those who did not show up for DXA. Using self-administered questionnaires as screening tools may be inefficient for systematic screening due to the low and differential screening uptake. Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of smoking index (calculated as number of cigarettes per day × smoking years) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) duration on osteoporosis (OP)evaluated by opportunistic chest CT in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods A total of 101 patients diagnosed with NSCLC were included in our cohort study. Among them, 50 patients with a history of smoking and COPD were assigned to the experimental group, while 51 patients without a history of smoking and COPD were assigned to the control group. Hounsfield unit (HU) value was measured by conventional chest CT to investigate the bone mineral density; and the mean values of axial HU value in the upper, middle and lower parts of T4, T7, T10 and L1 vertebral bodies were measured as the study variables. Results There were no significant differences in gender, age, body mass index, type of lung cancer, clinical stage of lung cancer and comorbidities between the two groups (P = 0.938,P = 0.158,P = 0.722,P = 0.596,P = 0.813,P = 0.655). The overall mean HU values of T4, T7, T10, L1 in the experimental group were 116.60 ± 30.67, 110.56 ± 30.03, 109.18 (96.85-122.95), 94.63 (85.20-104.12) and 106.86 ± 22.26, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the control group (189.55 ± 34.57, 174.54 ± 35.30, 172.73 (156.33-199.50), 158.20 (141.60-179.40) and 177.50 ± 33.49) (P <0.05). And in the experimental group, smoking index and COPD duration were significantly and negatively correlated with HU values (r = -0.627, -0.542, P <0.05, respectively). Conclusion Patients with NSCLC who have a history of smoking and COPD exhibit a notably lower HU value compared to the control groups. Additionally, it has been observed that the smoking index and duration of COPD may be influential factors affecting bone mineral density in NSCLC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of the radiomorphometric indices of mandibular cortical width (MCW) and mandibular cortical index (MCI) of cortical erosion for osteoporosis screening in adults (≥40 years) and older adults (≥65 years) to determine whether adding a fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) would improve efficacy. STUDY DESIGN One observer measured MCW and assessed MCI on dental panoramic radiographs acquired for patients in the Tromsø study. These indices, alone and with FRAX scores, were evaluated for efficacy in predicting osteoporosis, which was diagnosed by bone density measurement at the femoral necks with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS MCW ≤3 mm and MCI indicating heavily eroded cortices (C3) had accuracies of 68.8% and 83.6%, respectively, in identifying osteoporosis. In females >65 years, MCW ≤3 mm and C3 produced higher sensitivities but lower specificities, with slightly lower accuracies (61.4% and 79.8%, respectively) compared with all females. The addition of FRAX scores >15% improved the accuracy of MCW ≤3 mm (81.7%) and C3 (87.9%), resulting in high specificity (86.6% and 95.4%). Combining MCW ≤3 mm or C3 with FRAX >15% increased the probabilities of detecting osteoporosis by increasing positive likelihood ratios. CONCLUSIONS MCW ≤3 mm or MCI C3, when combined with FRAX >15%, showed superior diagnostic efficacy, with high specificity in detecting females without osteoporosis.

Abstract
Background:
Osteoporosis is a common health problem worldwide and has a high impact on quality of life and economic losses. However, having an early risk assessment can resolve the problem.
Objective:
To investigate the prevalence of bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis in the distal forearm among Thai women in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.
Methods:
The subjects were 456 women, aged between 24-88 years who inhabit Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The demographic characteristics data was obtained by using self-administered questionnaires that determine common risk factors for osteoporosis. The BMD of the non-dominant distal forearm of all subjects was determined according to standard protocol by use of peripheral dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (pDEXA) scanning.
Results:
The BMD decreased as a function of age (Pearson's r = -0.645) while the BMD increased as a function of weight (Pearson's r = 0.389), and height (Pearson's r = 0.267). The percentage of prevalence is increased as a function of age-group in osteoporosis group, while it is decreased in that of normal bone density. In addition, the BMD at distal forearm decreased when the duration of menopause increased (Pearson's r = -0.455)
Conclusion:
The prevalence of osteoporosis was found in the women who reside in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The current study will provide the information to guide the strategies for preventing osteoporosis in the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported that the fracture risk related to sarcopenic obesity (SO) may be influenced by the distribution of fat mass. Therefore, it is useful to explore a body component suitable for defining obesity when predicting fracture risk. This study was an attempt to explore the contribution of SO defined by visceral adiposity on the incidence of osteoporotic fracture. METHODS We enrolled 736 Chinese patients aged > 60 years in this prospective study. Sarcopenia was defined as low skeletal muscle index (SMI) with muscle strength or low SMI with low physical performance. Obesity was categorized as follows: (1) android to gynoid ratio (A/G ratio, men > 0.82, women > 0.65) as an indicator of visceral adiposity; (2) body fat percentage (men > 27.8%; women > 34.5%); and (3) body mass index (≥ 25 kg/m2). A Cox proportional hazard model was used to determine the association between SO and the risk of osteoporotic fracture. RESULTS The incidence of SO was 8.7%; 9.0% in females and 8.1% in males. Of 223 (30.2%) patients with self-reported fractures. SO classified by A/G was associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic vertebral fracture (HR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.07-2.72). High SMI was associated with a reduced risk of osteoporotic vertebral fracture (HR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.72-0.93), higher BMI was associated with a higher risk vertebral fracture (HR: 1.12, 95% CI: 0.94-1.63), and higher A/G ratio was associated with a higher risk of any fracture (HR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.14-1.43) and osteoporotic vertebral fracture (HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.05-1.36). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that SO, defined by visceral adiposity, was associated with the risk of osteoporotic vertebral fracture. Moreover, low SMI, low muscle strength and visceral adiposity were independently associated with osteoporotic fracture.

Abstract
The study investigated the effects of long-term glucocorticoid (GC) administration on bone remodelling, microstructure, and biomechanical strength in cortical and cancellous (trabecular) bones. Thirty-one female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three dexamethasone (Dex) dosage groups, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg twice a week for 8 weeks, and one control group treated with saline. At the end of the experiment, the tibia of one side and the fourth lumbar vertebrae were processed into sections for a histomorphometric analysis, while the femur of the same side and the fifth vertebrae were isolated for a biomechanical test. A dose-dependent decline in bone formation was observed in both trabecular and cortical (periosteal and endosteal) bones. In contrast, bone resorption was inhibited only in cancellous bone in the two higher dose groups and not dose-related. The ratio of Node/Termini increased, while marrow star volume (MSV) decreased in all Dex groups in metaphyseal trabecular bones, both of which were dose-dependent. Subendosteal cortex porosity increased in parallel with non-uniform trabecular distribution, but cortical thickness remained unchanged. Interestingly, there were no significant changes in microstructure or mechanical strength in lumbar trabecular bone. The cortical elastic load was dose-independently reduced in all three Dex groups when compared with the control group. In summary, bone remodelling was dose-dependently inhibited in cancellous bones but enhanced in intracortical bones. The non-uniform distribution of trabecular bone and increased porosity in the inner edge of cortical bone were both in parallel with GC dosage, and the porosity increase was more likely to occur, leading to reduced cortical mechanical strength.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Use of antiosteoporotic medication in the population-based, risk-stratified osteoporosis strategy evaluation (ROSE) screening study, comparing the use of FRAX followed by DXA with usual care, was examined. Screening increased the overall use of medication. Being recommended treatment by the hospital and higher age increased the likelihood of starting medication, but, nevertheless, a large percentage opted not to start treatment. INTRODUCTION The aim of the study was to examine the impact on medication prescription, adherence, and persistence of osteoporotic medicine in the randomized population-based ROSE screening study for osteoporosis. METHODS The Danish ROSE study included a population-based random sample of women aged 65-81 years randomized to either a two-step screening program consisting of FRAX followed by DXA for high-risk participants or opportunistic screening for osteoporosis (usual care). This sub-study on the intention-to-treat population examined the impact of the screening program on antiosteoporotic medication redemption rates, adherence, and persistence using Danish registers. RESULTS A total of 30,719 of 34,229 women were treatment-naïve. Significantly more participants in the screening group started on antiosteoporotic medication, but no differences in adherence and persistence rates were found. Higher age was associated with a higher likelihood of starting medication. A low Charlson comorbidity score (= 1) was associated with higher treatment initiation but lower adherence and persistence of antiosteoporotic treatment. A total of 31.7% of participants advised to initiate treatment did not follow the advice. CONCLUSIONS Screening for osteoporosis using FRAX followed by DXA increased the overall use of antiosteoporotic medication in the screening group without differences in adherence and persistence rates. A large percentage of participants advised to initiate treatment did nevertheless fail to do so.

Abstract
UNLABELLED There is a need of studies exploring the link between socioeconomic status and DXA scans and osteoporotic fracture, which was the aim of the present study. No differences in socioeconomic status and risk of osteoporotic fractures were found. However, women with further/higher education and higher income are more often DXA-scanned. INTRODUCTION Lower socioeconomic status is known to be associated with a range of chronic conditions and with access to health care services. The link between socioeconomic status and the use of DXA scans and osteoporotic fracture, however, needs to be explored more closely. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status and both DXA scan utilization and major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) using a population-based cohort of Danish women and national registers. METHODS The study included 17,155 women (65-81 years) sampled from the Risk-stratified Osteoporosis Strategy Evaluation study (ROSE). Information on socioeconomic background, DXA scans, and MOFs was retrieved from national registers. Competing-risk regression analyses were performed. Mean follow-up was 4.8 years. RESULTS A total of 4245 women had a DXA scan (24.7%) and 1719 (10.0%) had an incident MOF during follow-up. Analyses showed that women with basic education had a lower probability of undergoing DXA scans than women with further or higher education (greater than upper secondary education and vocational training education) (subhazard ratio (SHR) = 0.82; 95% CI 0.75-0.89, adjusted for age and comorbidity). Moreover, women with disposable income in the low and medium tertiles had a lower probability of undergoing DXA scans than women in the high-income tertile (SHR = 0.90; 95% CI 0.84-0.97 and SHR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.82-0.95, respectively, adjusted for age and comorbidity). No association between socioeconomic background and probability of DXA was found in adjusted analyses. CONCLUSION The study found no differences in risk of osteoporotic fractures depending on socioeconomic status. However, women with further or higher education as well as higher income are more often DXA-scanned.

Abstract
Background:Osteoporosis is a major public health issue in several countries worldwide because it increases healthcare costs, and is a risk for mortality. There have been several studies that have examined BMD among the various Thai people and the regions that they inhabit.Objective:This study examined the distal forearm Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in men and women over 40 years of age among members of various Karen hill-tribes located in the Omkoi District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.Methods:Two hundred and sixty-two subjects (180 women, 82 men), ranging from 40 to 83 years old were recruited in this study. The non-dominant distal forearm bone mineral density was assessed by using peripheral dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (pDEXA).Results:The results showed that the BMD were 0.530 ± 0.065, 0.508 ± 0.087, 0.461 ± 0.098, and 0.438 ± 0.124 g/cm2for men age 40-49 years, age 50-59 years, age 60-69 years, and ages 70-83 years, respectively. For women, the BMD were 0.392 ± 0.051, 0.337 ± 0.063, 0.232 ± 0.065, and 0.212 ± 0.069 g/cm2among women age 40-49 years, age 50-59 years, age 60-69 years, and ages 70-83 years, respectively. BMD had decreased in post-menopause as a function of duration time after menopause.Conclusion:We determined the prevalence of osteoporosis of men and women of Karen hill-tribes in the Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. These findings provided important information regarding bone health in Karen hill-tribes for any healthcare planning done in the immediate future.

Abstract
Abstracts Objective: This study investigated the characteristics of bone microstructure, metabolism, and biomechanics in rat's lumbar vertebra undergoing short-term glucocorticoid administration. Methods: Forty 4-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with either vehicle (Cont) or prednisone acetate (Pre) at 3.5 mg/kg/day, respectively for periods of 7 days and 21 days. The lumbar vertebras were processed for MicroCT scan, histomorphometry analysis, mechanical compression test, in addition to Dual-Energy X-ray absorptiometry scan, respectively. Results: The connective density (Conn. D) along with trabecular connection nodes decreased while trabecular termini increased in Pre at day 21 when compared to Cont at day 21 as well as Pre at day 0. The mineralizing surface (MS/BS), mineral apposition rate (MAR), bone formation rate (BFR), osteoblast surfaces (Ob.S/BS) were lower in Pre at day 21 than that in Cont at day 21, Pre at day 0 and Pre at day 7. Only the bending stiffness of compression test decreased in Pre group at day 21 compared to age-matched control. Conclusion: The results suggested that excess prednisone significantly inhibited bone formation and slightly depressed bone resorption in the lumbar vertebra of intact rats for the duration of 21 days. Accordingly, the trabecular spatial microstructure made an adjustment yet failed to maintain the anti-compression mechanical property.

Abstract
A number of previous studies have indicated that the genetic variation at the collage type I alpha 1 (COLIA1) gene locus influences susceptibility to osteoporosis. However, seldom have studies reported the effect of gene delivery using an adenovirus vector carrying human recombinant COLIA1 cDNA on stimulating osteogenic activity of osteoblasts and enhancing fracture healing of ovariectomized rats. The current study was performed to demonstrate whether direct gene delivery using an adenovirus vector carrying human recombinant COLIA1 cDNA could stimulate osteogenic activity of osteoblast in vitro and enhance fracture healing of ovariectomized rats in vivo. In vitro, the tet-on system regulated COLIA1 gene adenovirus was constructed and transfected to osteoblasts. COLIA1 mRNA and collagen type I levels were assessed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine whether adenovirus transfected successfully. Osteogenic activity of the osteoblasts was assessed by alkaline phosphatase activity, immunohistochemical staining, immunofluorescent staining, mineralized matrix formation, and extracellular calcium levels. In vivo, adenovirus-delivered COLIA1 gene was injected into the fracture site of the tibia in an ovariectomized rat model of osteoporosis, and bone callus condition was assessed to determine whether the COLIA1 gene could accelerate osteoporotic fracture healing. In vitro, the results showed that COLIA1 gene adenovirus transfection could increase osteoblast COLIA1 gene expression and collagen type I protein synthesis, increase alkaline phosphatase activity, and stimulate calcium nodules formation, which exhibited a direct osteogenic effect on the osteoblasts. In vivo, local injection of COLIA1 gene adenovirus increased collagen type I expression, restored bone mineral density, and accelerated fracture healing in ovariectomized rats, without increasing serum collagen type I and liver COLIA1 mRNA levels. This study suggests direct gene delivery using an adenovirus carrying human COLIA1 cDNA can stimulate the osteogenic activity of osteoblasts in vitro and enhance bone fracture healing in vivo. The tet-on system is an ideal gene regulatory system for effective and safe regulation of the therapeutic gene.

Abstract
Background According to the WHO, osteoporosis is one of the most important non- communicable diseases worldwide. Different screening procedures are controversially discussed, especially concerning the concomitant issues of overdiagnosis and harm caused by inappropriate Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and appropriateness of DXA as screening measure in Switzerland considering individual risk factors and to evaluate covariates independently associated with potentially inappropriate DXA screening. Methods Retrospective cross-sectional study using insurance claim data of 2013. Among all patients with DXA screening, women < 65 and men < 70 years without osteoporosis or risk factors for osteoporosis were defined as receiving potentially inappropriate DXA. Statistics included descriptive measures and multivariable regressions to estimate associations of relevant covariates with potentially inappropriate DXA screening. Results Of 1,131,092 patients, 552,973 were eligible. Among those 2637 of 10,000 (26.4%) underwent potentially inappropriate DXA screening. Female sex (Odds ratio 6.47, CI 6.41–6.54) and higher age showed the strongest association with any DXA screening. Female gender (Odds ratio 1.84, CI 1.49–2.26) and an income among the highest 5% (Odds ratio 1.40, CI 1.01–1.98) were significantly positively associated with potentially inappropriate DXA screening, number of chronic conditions (Odds ratio 0.67, CI 0.65–0.70) and living in the central region of Switzerland (Odds ratio 0.67, CI 0.48–0.95) negatively. Conclusion One out of four DXAs for screening purpose is potentially inappropriate. Stakeholders of osteoporosis screening campaigns should focus on providing more detailed information on appropriateness of DXA screening indications (e.g. age thresholds) in order to avoid DXA overuse. Abstract
UNLABELLED Population-based screening for osteoporosis is still controversial and has not been implemented. Non-participation in systematic screening was evaluated in 34,229 women age 65-81 years. Although participation rate was high, non-participation was associated with comorbidity, aging other risk factors for fractures, and markers of low social status, e.g., low income, pension, and living alone. A range of strategies is needed to increase participation, including development of targeted information and further research to better understand the barriers and enablers in screening for osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION Participation is crucial to the success of a screening program. The objective of this study was to analyze non-participation in Risk-stratified Osteoporosis Strategy Evaluation, a two-step population-based screening program for osteoporosis. METHODS Thirty-four thousand two hundred twenty-nine women aged 65 to 81 years were randomly selected from the background population and randomized to either a screening group (intervention) or a control group. All women received a self-administered questionnaire designed to allow calculation of future risk of fracture based on FRAX. In the intervention group, women with an estimated high risk of future fracture were invited to DXA scanning. Information on individual socioeconomic status and comorbidity was obtained from national registers. RESULTS A completed questionnaire was returned by 20,905 (61%) women. Non-completion was associated with older age, living alone, lower education, lower income, and higher comorbidity. In the intervention group, ticking "not interested in DXA" in the questionnaire was associated with older age, living alone, and low self-perceived fracture risk. Women with previous fracture or history of parental hip fracture were more likely to accept screening by DXA. Dropping out when offered DXA, was associated with older age, current smoking, higher alcohol consumption, and physical impairment. CONCLUSIONS Barriers to population-based screening for osteoporosis appear to be both psychosocial and physical in nature. Women who decline are older, have lower self-perceived fracture risk, and more often live alone compared to women who accept the program. Dropping out after primary acceptance is associated not only with aging and physical impairment but also with current smoking and alcohol consumption. Measures to increase program participation could include targeted information and reducing physical barriers for attending screening procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the prevalence of bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis in the distal forearm among Thai men over 40 years of age in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. METHODS The subjects in this study were 194 Thai men, aged between 40 and 87 years who resided in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Self-administered questionnaires were used for receiving the demographic characteristics information. BMD was measured by peripheral dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at the nondominant distal forearm in all men. RESULTS The BMD was highest in the age-group 40-49 years and lowest in the age-group 70-87 years. The average T-score at the distal forearm was also highest in the age-group 40-49 years and lowest in the age-group 70-87 years. The BMD decreased as a function of age-group (p < .05). In contrast, the BMD increased as a function of weight (p < .05). Height had weak impact on the BMD in the distal forearm (p > .05). The percentage of osteopenia and osteoporosis are increased as a function of age-group in, while decreased in that of normal bone density. CONCLUSIONS We found the prevalence of osteoporosis in men who resided in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A diagnostic gap exists in the current dual photon X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) based diagnostic approach to osteoporosis. Other diagnostic devices have been developed, but no comprehensive review concerning the applicability of these diagnostic devices for population-based screening have been performed. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic review of Embase, Medline and the Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials was performed for population-based studies that focused on technical methods that could either indicate bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA, substitute for DXA in prediction of fracture risk, or that could have an incremental value in fracture prediction in addition to DXA. Quality of included studies was rated by QUADAS 2. RESULTS Many other technical devices have been tested in a population-based setting. Five studies aiming to indicate BMD and 17 studies aiming to predict fractures were found. Overall, the latter studies had higher methodological quality. The highest number of studies was found for quantitative ultrasound (QUS). The ability to indicate BMD or predict fractures was moderate to minor for all examined devices, using reported area under the curve (AUC) of Receiver Operating Characteristic curves values as standard. CONCLUSIONS Of the methods assessed, only QUS appears capable of perhaps replacing DXA as standalone examination in the future whilst radiographic absorptiometry could provide important information in areas with scarcity of DXA. QUS may be of added value even after DXA has been performed. Evaluation of proposed cutoff-values from population-based studies in separate population-based cohorts is still lacking for most examination devices.
