Neural correlates of children with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder symptoms: large-scale neuroanatomical analysis of a paediatric population

BACKGROUND

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a recently recognised feeding and eating disorder and is characterised by a lack of interest and motivation to eat. Despite burgeoning research, few studies to date have explored the underlying neurobiology of ARFID. Research examining the neural underpinnings of ARFID can greatly assist in understanding different mechanisms that play disorder-specific roles.

METHODS

We studied a total of 1,977 10-year-old participants from the Generation R Study, a population-based Dutch cohort, to cross-sectionally examine neuroanatomical differences between those with versus without ARFID-like symptoms. Children were classified with versus without ARFID symptoms using the ARFID Index, a validated evaluative tool comprised of parent-reported and researcher-assessed measurements of picky eating, energy intake, diet quality, growth and psychosocial impact to characterise ARFID symptoms in the paediatric population. Global and regional values of surface area, cortical thickness, and volume from T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in those with ARFID symptoms were compared with children not exhibiting symptoms.

RESULTS

We identified 121 (6.1%) individuals with ARFID symptoms relative to 1,865 (93.9%) individuals without ARFID symptoms. Neuroanatomical findings identified significantly greater frontal (p = .00743; d = 0.21) and superior frontal (p = 6.56E-04; d = 0.28) cortical thickness among children with ARFID symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

This first large-scale study of the neural correlates of ARFID identified greater thickness of frontal cortical regions in children with ARFID symptoms, suggesting a role for executive function in the aetiology of the condition.

Parietal cortex is recruited by frontal and cingulate areas to support action monitoring and updating during stopping

Recent evidence indicates that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) may play a causal role in action stopping, potentially representing a novel neuromodulation target for inhibitory control dysfunctions. Here, we leverage intracranial recordings in human subjects to establish the timing and directionality of information flow between IPS and prefrontal and cingulate regions during action stopping. Prior to successful inhibition, information flows primarily from the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), a critical inhibitory control node, to IPS. In contrast, during stopping errors the communication between IPS and IFG is lacking, and IPS is engaged by posterior cingulate cortex, an area outside of the classical inhibition network and typically associated with default mode. Anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex also display performance-dependent connectivity with IPS. Our functional connectivity results provide direct electrophysiological evidence that IPS is recruited by frontal and anterior cingulate areas to support action plan monitoring and updating, and by posterior cingulate during control failures.

Shared neural correlates of interference control and response inhibition in adolescence and young adulthood

Inhibitory control (IC) is the ability to inhibit dominant or automatic behaviours, responses or thoughts, to allow for the selection of appropriate goal-directed responses. IC is a core executive function and has been associated with specific brain regions, such as the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) but also with a broader fronto-parietal network similar to the multiple demand network, which is thought to support the elaboration and maintenance of structured mental programs across a range of tasks. Here, functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from different IC tasks within the same participants to investigate similarities and differences in brain activation between tasks and age groups. Adolescents (11-15 years-old, n = 34) and adults (18-26, n = 33) completed block-design numerical Stroop and simple and complex Go/No-go (GNG) tasks. Univariate analyses showed large overlapping fronto-parietal activation in the Stroop and complex GNG tasks, with more limited activation in the simple GNG task. When compared to adolescents, adults showed greater increases in activation in the right IFG in the Stroop task and in temporo-parietal and precentral clusters in the complex GNG task. High multivariate similarity was observed across fronto-parietal regions between complex GNG and Stroop tasks, and between simple and complex GNG tasks, but was much lower between Stroop and simple GNG tasks. Adults showed greater similarity between complex GNG and Stroop tasks, suggesting increased reliance on shared neural processes across tasks, rather than increased specialisation of brain networks to specific aspects of IC over development.

Neural Associations between Inhibitory Control and Counterintuitive Reasoning in Science and Maths in Primary School Children

Emerging evidence suggests that inhibitory control (IC) plays a pivotal role in science and maths counterintuitive reasoning by suppressing incorrect intuitive concepts, allowing correct counterintuitive concepts to come to mind. Neuroimaging studies have shown greater activation in the ventrolateral and dorsolateral pFCs when adults and adolescents reason about counterintuitive concepts, which has been interpreted as reflecting IC recruitment. However, the extent to which neural systems underlying IC support science and maths reasoning remains unexplored in children. This developmental stage is of particular importance, as many crucial counterintuitive concepts are learned in formal education in middle childhood. To address this gap, fMRI data were collected while fifty-six 7- to 10-year-olds completed counterintuitive science and math problems, plus IC tasks of interference control (Animal Size Stroop) and response inhibition (go/no-go). Univariate analysis showed large regional overlap in activation between counterintuitive reasoning and interference control, with more limited activation observed in the response inhibition task. Multivariate similarity analysis, which explores fine-scale patterns of activation across voxels, revealed neural activation similarities between (i) science and maths counterintuitive reasoning and interference control tasks in frontal, parietal, and temporal regions, and (ii) maths reasoning and response inhibition tasks in the precuneus/superior parietal lobule. Extending previous research in adults and adolescents, this evidence is consistent with the proposal that IC, specifically interference control, supports children's science and maths counterintuitive reasoning, although further research will be needed to demonstrate the similarities observed do not reflect more general multidemand processes.

Novelty modulates proactive and reactive cognitive control modes: Evidence from ERP and EEG data

Novelty refers to the quality of an idea or product that is new or unusual. It has been shown to influence a broad range of cognitive processes, such as increasing arousal and facilitating working memory. However, no studies have directly investigated the effects of novelty on cognitive control, particularly on the trade-off between proactive and reactive cognitive control. The present study employed an adapted AX Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT) combined with electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the impact of novelty on proactive and reactive control modes. The behavioral results showed that reaction times in BX trials were longer under novel conditions than common conditions, indicating that participants may rely more on reactive control and/or rely less on proactive control when influenced by novelty. The EEG results showed smaller effects of cue-P3 and cue-locked theta-ERS under novelty, suggesting that novelty might decrease proactive control, including the decreased maintenance and utilization of contextual information. Moreover, in the novel conditions, the effect of probe-locked theta-ERS was greater, while the effect of probe-P3 was smaller. This indicates that novelty may enhance reactive control, including increased conflict monitoring and reduced response inhibition cost. The findings suggest that exposure to novelty can influence how individuals balance proactive and reactive control, potentially causing a bias towards reactive control.

Neuroanatomical associations with autistic characteristics in those with acute anorexia nervosa and weight-restored individuals

Common neuroanatomical regions are associated with both states of anorexia nervosa (AN) and autistic characteristics, but restoration of body mass index (BMI) has been associated with decreased presentation of autistic characteristics in some individuals with AN. This study aims to examine neuroanatomical correlates associated with autistic characteristics in those with acute anorexia nervosa (ac-AN) and those previously diagnosed with AN but whose weight has been restored (WR). In total, 183 individuals (healthy controls [HCs] = 67; n[ac-AN] = 68; n[WR] = 48) from the Brain imaging of Emotion And Cognition of adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa (BEACON) study were included, with autistic characteristics determined in both ac-AN and WR individuals (n = 116). To further examine BMI, ac-AN and WR group associations were compared. Random forest regression (RFR) models examined whether autistic characteristics and morphology of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were able to predict future levels of social anhedonia and alexithymia. Group-wise differences were identified within the volume and surface area of the MFG and OFC, which were unrelated to BMI. Autistic characteristics were inversely associated with MFG and ACC volume, with differences in associations between ac-AN and WR groups seen in the surface area of the MFG. RFR models identified moderate-to-weak performance and found that autistic characteristics were not important predictive features in a priori and exploratory models. Findings suggest that the presence of autistic characteristics in those with ac-AN are associated with the volume of the MFG and are unrelated to BMI restoration.

Theta Burst TMS over the Pre-SMA Improves Inhibitory Control in Gambling Disorder Subjects as Assessed with Stop Signal Task

BACKGROUND

Inhibitory control failure represents a central trait in substance and behavioral addictions, which includes patients affected with gambling disorder (GD). In GD patients, research on this trait of the addiction cycle has primarily focused on the use of pharmacological treatments for its assessment. More recently, modification of neural activity using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to explore the dimensions of GD using patient questionnaires.

METHODS

Herein, we evaluated the use of continuous Theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) to determine if it modified inhibitory control in the stop signal task of patients affected by GD when compared with a group of healthy controls without cTBS treatment.

RESULTS

To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to report that TMS treatment of GD patients is associated with a behavioral improvement of stop signal reaction time.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that this TMS-mediated improvement in the efficiency of inhibitory control in GD patients warrants further mechanistic studies in a larger cohort to determine if can be used as a treatment modality.

Neural circuit mapping of waiting impulsivity and proactive inhibition with convergent evidence from fMRI and TMS

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Waiting and stopping are essential and distinct elements of motor response inhibition. Waiting impulsivity has been traditionally studied in humans with choice serial reaction time tasks. Proactive stopping is one form of stopping relevant to waiting impulsivity and the neural substrates underlying their interaction are not well defined.

METHODS

We conducted two separate, but hierarchical studies. In the first we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a choice reaction time task and a novel proactive stopping task, in N = 41 healthy volunteers to map the overlapping neural circuit involved in waiting impulsivity and proactive stopping. In the second study, we aimed to provide mechanistic and causal evidence that disruption of this circuit with continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS; an inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol) affected waiting impulsivity. We recruited N = 51 healthy, right-handed volunteers in a single-blind, randomized, between-subjects design who were randomly allocated to stimulation (N = 26) and sham (N = 25) groups and subsequently performed a choice reaction time task.

RESULTS

In the first study, we showed; 1. a shared neural network comprising the pre- supplementary motor area and bilateral anterior insula underlying both waiting impulsivity and proactive stopping, and 2. activity in dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and left inferior frontal gyrus negatively correlated with waiting impulsivity in trials with additional target onset delay. In the second study, we demonstrated that inactivation of the left inferior frontal gyrus using cTBS significantly increased waiting impulsivity in a choice reaction time task.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings highlight the relevance of task design in assessing motor response inhibition and the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus integrity and related neural circuitry in waiting impulsivity and proactive stopping. We also leverage the use of convergent evidence from multi-modal investigation tools in addressing the causal neural areas underlying distinct forms of impulsivity.

Inhibitory control in the sober state as a function of alcohol sensitivity: a pilot functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study

Introduction

Lower sensitivity (LS) to acute alcohol promotes hazardous alcohol use, increasing risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Compared to peers with high sensitivity (HS), LS individuals exhibit amplified responses to alcohol cues and difficulty exerting inhibitory control (IC) over those cued responses. However, it is unclear whether LS and HS individuals differ in neural or behavioral responses when exerting IC over affectively neutral prepotent responses (i.e., domain-general IC). This fMRI pilot study examined domain-general IC and its neural correlates in young adult LS and HS individuals.

Methods

Participants (N = 32, M age = 20.3) were recruited based on their Alcohol Sensitivity Questionnaire responses (HS: n = 16; LS: n = 16; 9 females/group) to complete an event-related fMRI IC task in a sober state. Retrospective assessments of alcohol craving, consumption, and problems were taken outside the lab.

Results

Although IC performance (accuracy) was numerically lower for the LS group (M[SD] = 0.527[0.125]) compared to the HS group (M[SD] = 0.595[0.124]), no significant difference was detected [t(30) = 1.55, p = 0.132]. Across groups, IC-related activity was observed in bilateral fronto-cortico-striatal circuitry, including dorsal striatum (DS) and dorsal/supragenual anterior cingulate cortex (dACC). Within group HS, IC-related dACC activity was greater among individuals reporting less intense (b-95 CI = [-0.201, -0.041], p = 0.004) and less frequent alcohol craving experiences (b-95 CI = [-0.131, 0.005], p = 0.068), whereas in group LS, IC-related dACC activity was greater among individuals reporting more intense (b-95 CI = [0.009, 0.140], p = 0.028) and more frequent alcohol craving experiences (b-95 CI = [0.022, 0.128], p = 0.007).

Discussion

In sum, while LS and HS individuals demonstrated similar domain-general IC performance and recruited similar neural resources to perform IC, findings suggest that compensatory over-activation of frontocortical nodes of the fronto-cortico-striatal IC circuitry may be related to affective-motivational aspects of AUD symptomatology (craving in daily life) among LS individuals. Based on these preliminary findings, future studies with larger samples are warranted to determine the extent to which domain-general IC performance associated with fronto-cortico-striatal IC circuit activation contributes to the alcohol use pathophysiology, and whether therapeutic interventions (e.g., non-invasive brain stimulation) targeting fronto-cortico-striatal IC circuitry may decrease AUD symptomatology.

An ERP study characterizing how trait anxiety modulates proactive and reactive response inhibition independent of different emotional contexts

BACKGROUND

Human's response inhibition could be classified as proactive (top-down) and reactive (bottom-up) inhibition process. Although trait anxiety has been proposed to alter an individual's response inhibition, whether and how it modulates the proactive and reactive response inhibition processes in different emotional contexts remains unclear.

METHODS

We combined an adapted emotional Stop-Signal Task with high-temporal resolution electrophysiological recordings to compare the results of high and low trait anxiety participants.

RESULTS

At the behavioral level, no significant differences were found between high and low trait anxiety individuals in either proactive or reactive inhibition. However, the event-related potential analysis suggested that although trait anxiety might affect early object recognition, indicated by a greater P2 amplitude, high trait anxiety individuals may exhibit intact proactive inhibition but impaired reactive inhibition, signified by a delayed P3 peak latency. In addition, behavioral and event-related potential analyses revealed that negative emotional context impaired reactive inhibition independent of the effect of trait anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS

Trait anxiety impairs reactive inhibition but not proactive inhibition independently of neutral or negative emotional contexts.

The role of middle frontal gyrus in working memory retrieval by the effect of target detection tasks: a simultaneous EEG-fMRI study

Maintained working memory (WM) representations have been shown to influence visual target detection selection, while the effect of the visual target detection process on WM retrieval remains largely unknown. In the current research, we used the dual-paradigm of the visual target detection task and the delayed matching task (DMT), which contained the following four conditions: the match condition: the DMT target contained the detection target; the mismatch condition: the DMT target contained the detection distractor; the neutral condition: only the detection target was presented; the catch condition: only the DMT target was presented. Twenty-six subjects were recruited in the experiment with simultaneous EEG-fMRI data. Behaviorally, faster responses were found in the mismatch condition than in the match and neutral conditions. The EEG data found a greater parieto-occipital N1 component in the mismatch condition compared to the neutral condition, and a greater frontal N2 component in the match condition than in the mismatch condition. Moreover, compared to the match and neutral conditions, weaker activations of the bilateral middle frontal gyrus (MFG) were observed in the mismatch condition. And the representational similarity analysis (RSA) revealed significant differences in the representational patterns of the bilateral MFG between mismatch and match conditions, as well as in the representational patterns of the left MFG between mismatch and neutral conditions. Additionally, the left MFG may be the brain source of the N1 component in the mismatch condition. These findings suggest that the mismatch between the DMT target and detection target affects early attention allocation and attentional control in WM retrieval, and the MFG may play an important role in WM retrieval by the effect of the target detection task. In conclusion, our work deepens the understanding of the neural mechanisms by which visual target detection affects WM retrieval.

Impulsivity in ADHD and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review of Gray and White Matter Variations

Introduction: Impulsivity is one of the overlapping symptoms common to borderline personality disorder (BPD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but the neurobiological basis of these disorders remains uncertain. This systematic review aims to identify abnormalities in the gray and white matter associated with impulsivity in BPD and ADHD. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, and SCOPUS databases, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Studies that investigated gray and white matter alterations in BPD or ADHD populations and their relationship with impulsivity were included. We reviewed information from 23 studies involving 992 participants, which included findings from structural MRI and DTI. Results: The review identified various nonhomogeneous changes associated with impulsivity in BPD and ADHD. BPD was mainly associated with abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and limbic areas, which correlated negatively with impulsivity. In contrast, impulsivity associated with ADHD was associated with structural changes in the caudate nucleus and frontal-striatal pathways. Despite the overlapping symptoms of impulsivity, the neurobiological mechanisms appeared to differ between the two disorders. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the distinct neurostructural correlates of impulsivity in BPD and ADHD. While both disorders show impulsivity as one of their main symptoms, the fundamental brain structures associated with this trait are different. BPD is primarily associated with abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex and limbic system, whereas the alterations seen in ADHD tend to focus on the caudate nucleus and frontostriatal pathways. Further research is needed to clarify these differences and their implications for treatment.

Oscillatory activity in bilateral prefrontal cortices is altered by distractor strength during working memory processing

Working memory (WM) enables the temporary storage of limited information and is a central component of higher order cognitive function. Irrelevant and/or distracting information can have a negative impact on WM processing and suppressing such incoming stimuli is critical to maintaining adequate performance. However, the neural mechanisms and dynamics underlying such distractor inhibition remain poorly understood. In the current study, we enrolled 46 healthy adults (Mage: 27.92, Nfemale: 28) who completed a Sternberg type WM task with high- and low-distractor conditions during magnetoencephalography (MEG). MEG data were transformed into the time-frequency domain and significant task-related oscillatory responses were imaged to identify the underlying anatomical areas. Whole-brain paired t-tests, with cluster-based permutation testing for multiple comparisons correction, were performed to assess differences between the low- and high-distractor conditions for each oscillatory response. Across conditions, we found strong alpha and beta oscillations (i.e., decreases relative to baseline) and increases in theta power throughout the encoding and maintenance periods. Whole-brain contrasts revealed significantly stronger alpha and beta oscillations in bilateral prefrontal regions during maintenance in high- compared to low-distractor trials, with the stronger beta oscillations being centered on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right inferior frontal gyrus, while those for alpha being within the right anterior prefrontal cortices and the right middle frontal gyrus. These findings suggest that alpha and beta oscillations in the bilateral prefrontal cortices play a major role in the inhibition of distracting information during WM maintenance. Our results also contribute to prior research on cognitive control and functional inhibition, in which prefrontal regions have been widely implicated.

Unravelling the dynamics of response force: Investigating motor restraint and motor cancellation through go/no-go and stop-signal tasks

Prior research has found that the go/no-go (GNG) task primarily reflects participants' motor-restraint process, while the stop-signal task (SST) primarily represents participants' motor-cancellation process. However, traditional binary keyboards used in these experiments are unable to capture the subtleties of sub-threshold response-force dynamics. This has led to the neglect of potential sub-threshold motor-inhibition processes. In two experiments, we explored sub-threshold inhibition by using a custom force-sensitive keyboard to record response force in both GNG and SST. In experiment 1, participants displayed increased response force when correctly rejecting no-go targets in the GNG task compared to the baseline. In addition, they exhibited higher response force in hit trials than in false alarms, revealing engagement of both motor-restraint and motor-cancellation processes in GNG. Initially, participants utilised motor restraint, but if it failed to prevent inappropriate responses, they employed motor cancellation to stop responses before reaching the keypress threshold. In experiment 2, we used participants' average response-force amplitude and response-force latency in SST stop trials to characterise the motor-cancellation process. Average amplitude significantly predicted false-alarm rates in the GNG task, but the relationship between response latency and false-alarm rates was insignificant. We hypothesised that response latency reflects reactive inhibition control in motor cancellation, whereas average amplitude indicates proactive inhibition control. Our findings underscore the complexity of motor inhibition.

Comparative analysis of resting-state EEG functional connectivity in depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are psychiatric disorders that often co-occur. We aimed to investigate whether their high comorbidity could be traced not only by clinical manifestations, but also at the level of functional brain activity. In this paper, we examined the differences in functional connectivity (FC) at the whole-brain level and within the default mode network (DMN). Resting-state EEG was obtained from 43 controls, 26 OCD patients, and 34 MDD patients. FC was analyzed between 68 cortical sources, and between-group differences in the 4-30 Hz range were assessed via the Network Based Statistic method. The strength of DMN intra-connectivity was compared between groups in the theta, alpha and beta frequency bands. A cluster of 67 connections distinguished the OCD, MDD and control groups. The majority of the connections, 8 of which correlated with depressive symptom severity, were found to be weaker in the clinical groups. Only 3 connections differed between the clinical groups, and one of them correlated with OCD severity. The DMN strength was reduced in the clinical groups in the alpha and beta bands. It can be concluded that the high comorbidity of OCD and MDD can be traced at the level of FC.

The interplay of cognitive control and feature integration: insights from theta oscillatory dynamics during conflict processing

Adaptive behavior is fundamental to cognitive control and executive functioning. This study investigates how cognitive control mechanisms and episodic feature retrieval interact to influence adaptiveness, focusing particularly on theta (4 to 8 Hz) oscillatory dynamics. We conducted two variations of the Simon task, incorporating response-incompatible, response-compatible, and neutral trials. Experiment 1 demonstrated that cognitive adjustments-specifically, cognitive shielding following incompatible trials and cognitive relaxation following compatible ones-are reflected in midfrontal theta power modulations associated with the Simon effect. Experiment 2 showed that reducing feature overlap between trials leads to less pronounced sequential modulations in behavior and midfrontal theta activity, supporting the hypothesis that cognitive control and feature integration share a common neural mechanism. These findings highlight the interaction of cognitive control processes and episodic feature integration in modulating behavior. The results advocate for hybrid models that combine top-down and bottom-up processes as a comprehensive framework to understand cognitive control dynamics and adaptive behavior.

Inhibiting responses under the watch of a recently synchronized peer increases self-monitoring: evidence from functional near-infrared spectroscopy

Developing motor synchrony with a peer (through interventions such as the mirror game) can yield collaborative, cognitive and social benefits. However, it is also well established that observation by an audience can improve cognition. The combined and relative advantages offered by motor synchronization and audience effects are not yet understood. It is important to address this gap to determine the extent to which synchronizing activities might interact with the positive effects of an audience. In this preregistered study, we investigate the extent to which response inhibition may be improved when observed by a peer after motor synchronization with this peer. We compare behavioural and cortical (functional near-infrared spectroscopy; fNIRS) measures of inhibition between synchronized and non-synchronized dyads and find that the presence of a synchronized peer-audience introduces a speed-accuracy trade-off, consisting of slower reaction times and improved accuracy. This co-occurs with cortical activation in bilateral inferior frontal and middle prefrontal cortices, which are implicated in monitoring and maintenance of social alignment. Our findings have implications for carers and support people, who may benefit from synchronizing activities for rehabilitating inhibition and social skills in clinical settings.

Dual-Process Theory of Thought and Inhibitory Control: An ALE Meta-Analysis

The dual-process theory of thought rests on the co-existence of two different thinking modalities: a quick, automatic, and associative process opposed to a slow, thoughtful, and deliberative process. The increasing interest in determining the neural foundation of the dual-process distinction has yielded mixed results, also given the difficulty of applying the fMRI standard approach to tasks usually employed in the cognitive literature. We report an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to investigate the neural foundation of the dual-process theory of thought. Eligible studies allowed for the identification of cerebral areas associated with dual-process theory-based tasks without differentiating between fast and slow thinking. The ALE algorithm converged on the medial frontal cortex, superior frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, insula, and left inferior frontal gyrus. These structures partially overlap with the cerebral areas recurrently reported in the literature about the neural basis of the dual-process distinction, where the PARCS theory-based interpretation emphasizes the role of the right inferior gyrus. The results confirm the potential (but still almost unexplored) common ground between the dual-process literature and the cognitive control literature.

Positive schizotypy and Motor Impulsivity correlate with response aberrations in ventral attention network during inhibitory control

Inhibitory control (IC) aberrations are present in various psychopathologies, including schizophrenia spectrum and personality disorders, especially in association with antisocial or violent behaviour. We investigated behavioural and neural associations between IC and psychopathology-related traits of schizotypy [Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE)], psychopathy [Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM)], and impulsivity [Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11)], using a novel Go/No-Go Task (GNG) featuring human avatars in 78 healthy adults (25 males, 53 females; mean age = 25.96 years, SD = 9.85) and whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a separate sample of 22 right-handed healthy individuals (7 males, 15 females; mean age = 24.13 years, SD = 5.40). Behaviourally, O-LIFE Impulsive Nonconformity (impulsive, anti-social, and eccentric behaviour) significantly predicted 16 % of variance in false alarms (FAs). O-LIFE Unusual Experiences (positive schizotypy) and BIS-11 Motor Impulsivity predicted 15 % of d prime (d') (sensitivity index) for the fastest (400 ms) GNG trials. When examined using fMRI, higher BIS-11 Motor Impulsivity uniquely, and also together with Unusual Experiences, was associated with lower activity in the left lingual gyrus during successful inhibition (correct No-Go over baseline). Additionally, higher Impulsive Nonconformity was associated with lower activity in the caudate nucleus and anterior cingulate during No-Go compared to Go stimuli reactions. Positive schizotypy, motor, and antisocial-schizotypal impulsivity correlate with some common but mostly distinct neural activation patterns during response inhibition in areas within or associated with the ventral attention network.

Heightened sensitivity to high-calorie foods in children at risk for obesity: insights from behavior, neuroimaging, and genetics

Pediatric obesity is a major public health concern. Genetic susceptibility and increased availability of energy-dense food are known risk factors for obesity. However, the extent to which these factors jointly bias behavior and neural circuitry towards increased adiposity in children remains unclear. While undergoing fMRI, 108 children (ages 5-11y) performed a food-specific go/no-go task. Participants were instructed to either respond ("go") or inhibit responding ("no-go") to images of food or toys. Half of the runs depicted high-calorie foods (e.g., pizza) whereas the other half depicted low-calorie foods (e.g., salad). Children were also genotyped for a DNA polymorphism associated with energy intake and obesity (FTO rs9939609) to examine the influence of obesity risk on behavioral and brain responses to food. Participants demonstrated differences in behavioral sensitivity to high- and low-calorie food images depending on task demands. Participants were slower but more accurate at detecting high- (relative to low-) calorie foods when responding to a neutral stimulus (i.e., toys) and worse at detecting toys when responding to high-calorie foods. Inhibition failures were accompanied by salience network activity (anterior insula, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex), which was driven by false alarms to food images. Children at a greater genetic risk for obesity (dose-dependent model of the FTO genotype) demonstrated pronounced brain and behavioral relationships such that genetic risk was associated with heightened sensitivity to high-calorie food images and increased anterior insula activity. These findings suggest that high-calorie foods may be particularly salient to children at risk for developing eating habits that promote obesity.

Cognition and Interaction: From the Perspective of Daily Therapeutic Landscape of the Coastal Zone

This study explored the relationship between mental and physical therapeutic effects through three dimensions: man-environment relationships, a sense of place, and symbolic landscapes. The study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Local residents living in the coastal area of Xinglin Bay were the research objects. Quantitative data analysis revealed that the frequency of residents' visits was an important variable affecting their physical and treatment perceptions. For those who visit frequently, these visits can evoke memories, which can better express their sensory experience. The text analysis showed that residents picked up two major landscape elements to form the sense of place and symbolic landscape: one is the water body in the coastal zone, and the other is the cultural symbol of the peninsula. Based on untoward event experience, the residents assembled the elements into a new spatial relationship with therapeutic affordance.

Subregional prefrontal cortex recruitment as a function of inhibitory demand: an fMRI metanalysis

Convergent studies corroborated the idea that the right prefrontal cortex is the crucial brain region responsible for inhibiting our actions. However, which sub-regions of the right prefrontal cortex are involved is still a matter of debate. To map the inhibitory function of the sub-regions of the right prefrontal cortex, we performed Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) meta-analyses and meta-regressions (ES-SDM) of fMRI studies exploring inhibitory control. Sixty-eight studies (1684 subjects, 912 foci) were identified and divided in three groups depending on the incremental demand. Overall, our results showed that higher was the inhibitory demand based on the individual differences in performances, more the upper portion of the right prefrontal cortex was activated to achieve a successful inhibition. Conversely, a lower demand of the inhibitory function, was associated with the inferior portions of the right prefrontal cortex recruitment. Notably, in the latter case, we also observed activation of areas associated with working memory and responsible for cognitive strategies.

Cultural Differences in Inhibitory Control: An ALE Meta-Analysis

Culture greatly influences our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, affecting how we communicate and make decisions. There is an ongoing debate regarding the belief that people from Eastern cultures possess greater self-control abilities when compared to people from Western cultures. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis using the Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) algorithm to compare 30 studies (719 subjects, 373 foci) that used fMRI to investigate the performance in Go-Nogo and Stop Signal Tasks of participants from Western and/or Eastern countries. Our meta-analysis found differences between the networks activated in Eastern and Western culture participants. The right prefrontal cortex showed distinct patterns, with the Inferior Frontal gyrus more active in the Eastern group and the middle and superior frontal gyri more active in the Western group. Our findings suggest that Eastern culture subjects have a higher tendency to activate brain regions involved in proactive inhibitory control, while Western culture subjects rely more on reactive inhibitory brain regions during cognitive control tasks. This implies that proactive inhibition may play a crucial role in promoting the collective and interdependent behavior typical of Eastern cultures, while reactive inhibition may be more important for efficient cognitive control in subjects of Western cultures that prioritize individualism and independence.

High-frequency rTMS over the left DLPFC improves the response inhibition control of young healthy participants: an ERP combined 1H-MRS study

Introduction

Unlike the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in treating neuropsychiatric diseases, little is known about how personal factors might account for the disparity of results from studies of cognition and rTMS. In this study, we investigated the effects of high-frequency rTMS on response inhibition control and explored the time course changes in cognitive processing and brain metabolic mechanisms after rTMS using event-related potentials (ERPs) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS).

Methods

Participants were all right-handed and were naive to rTMS and the Go/NoGo task. Twenty-five healthy young participants underwent one 10 Hz rTMS session per day in which stimulation was applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and a homogeneous participant group of 25 individuals received a sham rTMS treatment for 1  week. A Go/NoGo task was performed, an electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded, and ¹H-MRS was performed.

Results

The results revealed that there was a strong trend of decreasing commission errors of NoGo stimuli by high frequency rTMS over the left DLPFC, whereas there was no significant difference between before and after rTMS treatment with respect to these parameters in the sham rTMS group. High-frequency rTMS significantly increased the amplitude of NoGo-N2 but not Go-N2, Go-P3, or NoGo-P3. The myo-inositol /creatine complex (MI/Cr) ratio, indexing cerebral metabolism, in the left DLPFC was decreased in the rTMS treated group.

Discussion

This observation supports the view that high-frequency rTMS over the left DLPFC has the strong tendency of reducing commission errors behaviorally, increase the amplitude of NoGo-N2 and improve the response inhibition control of healthy young participants. The results are consistent with the excitatory properties of high frequency rTMS. We suggest that the increase in the NoGo-N2 amplitude may be related to the increased excitability of the DLPFC-anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) neural loop. Metabolic changes in the DLPFC may be a possible mechanism for the improvement of the response inhibition control of rTMS.

Intentional maintenance of antiphase bimanual pattern at transition frequency: Is it associated with inhibition processes?

This study aimed at demonstrating the intentional modulation of bimanual coordination dynamics at transition frequency and determining whether it is associated with perceptual and/or motor inhibition capacities. Healthy adults (N = 29) performed in a random order: i) bimanual anti-phase (AP) movements at the maximal individual transition frequency, with the instruction to either let go, or intentionally maintain the initial movement pattern and oppose to the spontaneous transition to in-phase (IP) movements, and ii) The Motor and Perceptual Inhibition Test, giving separate scores for perceptual and motor inhibition. Results showed that in the intentional condition participants were able to delay (more movement cycles before the transition) and suppress (more trials without transition) the spontaneous transition from AP to IP. A statistically significant, though weak, correlation was found between motor performance and perceptual inhibition scores. We interpreted our findings as an indicator of the presence of an inhibitory mechanism underlying intentional dynamics that is partially associated to perceptual inhibition in healthy adults. This could have implications in populations with compromised inhibitory capacities, which might entail motor repercussions, and suggests the possibility of using bimanual coordination as means to stimulate both cognitive and motor capacities.

Decision-making abilities under risk and ambiguity in adults with traumatic brain injury: what do we know so far? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health and socio-economic problem since it is one of the major sources of death and disability worldwide. TBI patients usually show high heterogeneity in their clinical features, including both cognitive and emotional/behavioral alterations. As it specifically concerns cognitive functioning, these patients usually show decision-making (DM) deficits. DM is commonly considered a complex and multistep process that is strictly linked to both hot and cold executive functioning and is pivotal for daily life functioning and patients' autonomy. However, the results are not always in agreement, with some studies that report huge alterations in the DM processes, while others do not. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aims to integrate past literature on this topic, providing a clear and handy picture both for researchers and clinicians. Thirteen studies addressing domain-general DM abilities were included from an initial N = 968 (from three databases). Results showed low heterogeneity between the studies (I2 = 7.90, Q (12) = 13.03, p = .37) supporting the fact that, overall, TBI patients showed lower performance in DM tasks as compared to healthy controls (k = 899, g = .48, 95% CI [0.33; 0.62]) both in tasks under ambiguity and under risk. The evidence that emerged from this meta-analysis denotes a clear deficit of DM abilities in TBI patients. However, DM tasks seemed to have good sensitivity but low specificity. A detailed description of patients' performances and the role of both bottom-up, hot executive functions and top-down control functions have been further discussed. Finally, future directions and practical implications for both researchers and clinicians have been put forward.

Brain structural abnormalities and trait impulsivity in suicidal and non-suicidal patients with bipolar disorder

BACKGROUND

Impulsivity is a characteristic of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and may result in a higher risk of suicide attempt (SA). Although brain structural abnormalities have been suggested in the pathophysiology of BD, the relationship to impulsivity and suicide in BD is still not clear.

METHODS

52 euthymic patients with BD (26 of them had a history of SA) and 56 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. All participants received clinical assessment, including Barratt impulsiveness scale (BIS), and underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging examination. An automated surface-based method (FreeSurfer) was used to measure brain volume and cortical surface area. A general linear model was applied to analyze the association between brain-wise greater gray matter volume (GMV), surface area and BIS scores separately for BD patients with and without SA history.

RESULTS

BD patients with SA history scored higher in BIS total score and subscores in attention, motor, cognitive complexity and cognitive instability than those without SA history and controls (all p < 0.01). In patients with SA history, higher BIS scores were associated with greater GMV in the left pars triangularis and greater surface area in left pars opercularis (all p < 0.01). BD patients with SA history showed a greater GMV in inferior frontal gyrus than patients without SA history (p < 0.05).

LIMITATION

The cross-sectional design precluded examination of chronological relationships of SA, brain structural abnormalities, and trait impulsivity among BD.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings indicate that the prefrontal cortex, especially the left inferior frontal gyrus, plays a vital role in trait impulsivity and suicidal behavior among patients with BD.

Ethnicity, minority status, and inter-group bias: A systematic meta-analysis on fMRI studies

Introduction

This meta-analysis investigated (1) whether ethnic minority and majority members have a neural inter-group bias toward each other, and (2) whether various ethnic groups (i.e., White, Black, and Asian) are processed in the brain differently by the other respective ethnicities.

Methods

A systematic coordinate-based meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies was conducted using Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycINFO (altogether 50 datasets, n = 1211, 50.1% female).

Results

We found that ethnic minority members did not show any signs of neural inter-group bias (e.g., no majority-group derogation). Ethnic majority members, in turn, expressed biased responses toward minority (vs. majority) members in frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital regions that are known to be involved in e.g., facial processing, attention, and perspective-taking. We also found differences in neural response patterns toward different ethnic groups (White, Black, and Asian); broadest biases in neural response patterns were evident toward Black individuals (in non-Black individuals). Heterogeneity was mostly minor or low.

Discussion

Overall, the findings increase understanding of neural processes involved in ethnicity perception and cognition as well as ethnic prejudices and discrimination. This meta-analysis provides explanations for previous behavioral reports on ethnic discrimination toward minority groups.

Charting the neural circuits disruption in inhibitory control and its subcomponents across psychiatric disorders: A neuroimaging meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Inhibitory control, comprising cognitive inhibition and response inhibition, showed consistent deficits among several major psychiatric disorders. We aim to identify the trans-diagnostic convergence of neuroimaging abnormalities underlying inhibitory control across psychiatric disorders.

METHODS

Inhibitory control tasks neuroimaging, including functional magnetic resonance imaging, single-photon emission computed tomography, and positron emission tomography articles published in PubMed and Web of Science before April 2020 comparing healthy controls with patients with several psychiatric disorders were searched.

RESULTS

146 experiments on 2653 patients with different disorders and 2764 control participants were included. Coordinates of case-control differences coded by diagnosis and inhibitory control components were analyzed using activation likelihood estimation. A robust trans-diagnostic pattern of aberrant brain activation in the bilateral cingulate gyri extending to medial frontal gyri, right insula, bilateral lentiform nuclei, right inferior frontal gyrus, right precuneus extending to inferior parietal lobule, and right supplementary motor area were detected. Frontostriatal pathways are the commonly disrupted neural circuits in the inhibitory control across psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, Patients showed aberrant activation in the dorsal frontal inhibitory system in cognitive inhibition, while in the frontostriatal system in response inhibition across disorders.

CONCLUSION

Consistent with the Research Domain Criteria initiative, current findings show that psychiatric disorders may be productively formulated as a phenotype of trans-diagnostic neurocircuit disruption. Our results provide new insights for future research into mental disorders with inhibition-related dysfunctions.

Effect of different sport environments on proactive and reactive motor inhibition: A study on open- and closed-skilled athletes via mouse-tracking procedure

This study aimed to investigate the effect of different sport environments (open-and closed-skill sports) on proactive and reactive inhibitory processes as two distinct components of motor inhibition. A mouse-tracking procedure was employed to compare behavioral performance among three groups of participants (tennis players, swimmers and non-athletes) in non-sport-specific cued Go/No-Go (GNG) and Stop Signal Task (SST), which mainly engage proactive and reactive inhibitory control, respectively. Reaction times (RTs), inhibitory failures, and Stop Signal Reaction Times (SSRTs) were measured. To investigate dynamic aspects of inhibitory control, movement trajectories classified as one-shot (absence of trajectory alteration reflected in a steep slope) or non-one-shot (non-linear/multipeaked trajectory, with one or multiple corrections) were analyzed and compared among groups. Results showed no group differences in RTs in Go/No-Go and Stop conditions. SSRTs were significant shorter for the athletes than non-athletes in SST, but no differences emerged for inhibitory failures in cued GNG. During inhibitory failures athletes showed higher proportion of non-one-shot movements than non-athletes. Higher proportion of non-one-shot profiles was observed in cued GNG compared to SST. Finally, no differences between open-and closed-skilled athletes were found in both tasks. Our findings suggest that both proactive and reactive inhibitory controls do benefit from sport practice, but open-and closed-skill sports do not differ in influencing inhibitory processes. Movement profile analysis could be a promising, complementary behavioral analysis to integrate for more fine-grained evaluation and differentiation of inhibitory motor control in athletes, specifically when using GNG tasks.

Kinematic Studies of the Go/No-Go Task as a Dynamic Sensorimotor Inhibition Task for Assessment of Motor and Executive Function in Stroke Patients: An Exploratory Study in a Neurotypical Sample

Inhibition of reaching and grasping actions as an element of cognitive control and executive function is a vital component of sensorimotor behaviour that is often impaired in patients who have lost sensorimotor function following a stroke. To date, there are few kinematic studies detailing the fine spatial and temporal upper limb movements associated with the millisecond temporal trajectory of correct and incorrect responses to visually driven Go/No-Go reaching and grasping tasks. Therefore, we aimed to refine the behavioural measurement of correct and incorrect inhibitory motor responses in a Go/No-Go task for future quantification and personalized rehabilitation in older populations and those with acquired motor disorders, such as stroke. An exploratory study mapping the kinematic profiles of hand movements in neurotypical participants utilizing such a task was conducted using high-speed biological motion capture cameras, revealing both within and between subject differences in a sample of healthy participants. These kinematic profiles and differences are discussed in the context of better assessment of sensorimotor function impairment in stroke survivors.

Electrophysiological evidence for inhibition hypothesis of micro-expressions based on tensor component analysis and Physarum network algorithm

The inhibition hypothesis advocated by Ekman (1985) states when an emotion is concealed or masked, the true emotion is manifested as a micro-expression (ME) which is a fleeting expression lasting for 40 to 500 ms. However, research about the inhibition hypothesis of ME from the perspective of electrophysiology is lacking. Here, we report the electrophysiological evidence obtained from an electroencephalography (EEG) data analysis method. Specifically, we designed an ME elicitation paradigm to collect data of MEs of positive emotions and EEG from 70 subjects, and proposed a method based on tensor component analysis (TCA) combined with the Physarum network (PN) algorithm to characterize the spatial, temporal, and spectral signatures of dynamic EEG data of MEs. The proposed TCA-PN methods revealed two pathways involving dorsal and ventral streams in functional brain networks of MEs, which reflected the inhibition processing and emotion arousal of MEs. The results provide evidence for the inhibition hypothesis from an electrophysiological standpoint, which allows us to better understand the neural mechanism of MEs.

Distinct neural activation patterns of age in subcomponents of inhibitory control: A fMRI meta-analysis

Inhibitory control (IC) is a fundamental cognitive function showing age-related change across the healthy lifespan. Since different cognitive resources are needed in the two subcomponents of IC (cognitive inhibition and response inhibition), regions of the brain are differentially activated. In this study, we aimed to determine whether there is a distinct age-related activation pattern in these two subcomponents. A total of 278 fMRI articles were included in the current analysis. Multilevel kernel density analysis was used to provide data on brain activation under each subcomponent of IC. Contrast analyses were conducted to capture the distinct activated brain regions for the two subcomponents, whereas meta-regression analyses were performed to identify brain regions with distinct age-related activation patterns in the two subcomponents of IC. The results showed that the right inferior frontal gyrus and the bilateral insula were activated during the two IC subcomponents. Contrast analyses revealed stronger activation in the superior parietal lobule during cognitive inhibition, whereas stronger activation during response inhibition was observed primarily in the right inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral insula, and angular gyrus. Furthermore, regression analyses showed that activation of the left anterior cingulate cortex, left inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral insula, and left superior parietal lobule increased and decreased with age during cognitive inhibition and response inhibition, respectively. The results showed distinct activation patterns of aging for the two subcomponents of IC, which may be related to the differential cognitive resources recruited. These findings may help to enhance knowledge of age-related changes in the activation patterns of IC.

Neural Underpinnings of Proactive and Preemptive Adjustments of Action Control

This study aimed to trace the neural basis of proactive and preemptive adjustments of executive control and their effects on online processing of response conflict. In two EEG experiments, participants performed the flanker task with predictive cueing of conflict. The following questions were addressed: "Does conflict cueing improve performance?" We observed improved behavioral performance in the predictive condition, suggesting that participants proactively utilized the cues to prepare for the upcoming demands. "How is conflict processing affected by predictive cueing?" Conflict-related modulations of midfrontal N2 and theta power were smaller in the predictive than in the neutral condition. This suggests that proactive control suppressed the impact of incongruent flankers so that the conflict was reduced, and so was the involvement of online control. "Is proactive control implemented through preactivation of online control?" Conflict cueing increased midfrontal theta power also before target onset, suggesting preactivation of the control processes beforehand. "Do proactive and reactive control depend on common or unique processes?" Unlike the online control, the proactive control triggered a burst of theta power in the right hemisphere's dorsal and ventral lateral prefrontal cortices, connected with the midfrontal area via theta phase coherence. This indicates that the two control modes involve partially unique but coordinated neural processes. "Is preemptive control implemented through modulations of visual processing?" Predictive cueing modulated both the pretarget preparatory alpha desynchronization and the target selection-related posterior contralateral negativity (N2pc and sustained posterior contralateral negativity), in line with the hypothesis of preemptive tuning of sensory selection aimed at reducing the impact of conflicting stimuli.

Differences in Emotional Conflict Processing between High and Low Mindfulness Adolescents: An ERP Study

Mindfulness is a state of concentration that allows individuals to focus on their feelings and thoughts without judgment. However, little is known regarding the underlying neural processes of mindfulness. This study used ERPs to investigate the differences between high and low trait mindfulness adolescents during emotional conflict processing. Nineteen low mindfulness adolescents (LMSs) and sixteen high mindfulness adolescent (HMSs) individuals were asked to complete a face Stroop task. The task superimposed emotional words on emotional faces to generate congruent (CC) and incongruent (IC) conditions. Continuous electroencephalogram data were recorded during the face Stroop task. Results revealed that for N450, the interaction of congruency and group was significant. The incongruent trials evoked a larger N450 than the congruent trials in the HMSs, whereas there were no significant differences between the two conditions in the LMSs. There were significant main effects of congruency for SP (slow potential). The incongruent trials evoked a larger SP than the congruent trials. The results suggest that mindfulness may only affect early conflict monitoring rather than later conflict resolution. The findings expand the neural basis of the effect of mindfulness on inhibitory control.

EEG Correlates of Active Stopping and Preparation for Stopping in Chronic Tic Disorder

Motor inhibition is an important cognitive process involved in tic suppression. As the right frontal lobe contains important inhibitory network nodes, we characterized right superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyral (RSFG, RMFG, RIFG) event-related oscillations during motor inhibition in youth with chronic tic disorders (CTD) versus controls. Fourteen children with CTD and 13 controls (10–17 years old) completed an anticipated-response stop signal task while dense-array electroencephalography was recorded. Between-group differences in spectral power changes (3–50 Hz) were explored after source localization and multiple comparisons correction. Two epochs within the stop signal task were studied: (1) preparatory phase early in the trial before motor execution/inhibition and (2) active inhibition phase after stop signal presentation. Correlation analyses between electrophysiologic data and clinical rating scales for tic, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and inattention/hyperactivity were performed. There were no behavioral or electrophysiological differences during active stopping. During stop preparation, CTD participants showed greater event-related desynchronization (ERD) in the RSFG (γ-band), RMFG (β, γ-bands), and RIFG (θ, α, β, γ-bands). Higher RSFG γ-ERD correlated with lower tic severity (r = 0.66, p = 0.04). Our findings suggest RSFG γ-ERD may represent a mechanism that allows CTD patients to keep tics under control and achieve behavioral performance similar to peers.

Cerebral Volumetric Correlates of Apathy in Alzheimer's Disease and Cognitively Normal Older Adults: Meta-Analysis, Label-Based Review, and Study of an Independent Cohort

BACKGROUND

Affecting nearly half of the patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), apathy is associated with higher morbidity and reduced quality of life. Basal ganglia and cortical atrophy have been implicated in apathy. However, the findings have varied across studies and left unclear whether subdomains of apathy may involve distinct neuroanatomical correlates.

OBJECTIVE

To identify neuroanatomical correlates of AD-associated apathy.

METHODS

We performed a meta-analysis and label-based review of the literature. Further, following published routines of voxel-based morphometry, we aimed to confirm the findings in an independent cohort of 19 patients with AD/mild cognitive impairment and 25 healthy controls assessed with the Apathy Evaluation Scale.

RESULTS

Meta-analysis of 167 AD and 56 healthy controls showed convergence toward smaller basal ganglia gray matter volume (GMV) in apathy. Label-based review showed anterior cingulate, putamen, insula, inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) atrophy in AD apathy. In the independent cohort, with small-volume-correction, right putamen and MTG showed GMVs in negative correlation with Apathy Evaluation Scale total, behavioral, and emotional scores, and right IFG with emotional score (p < 0.05 family-wise error (FWE)-corrected), controlling for age, education, intracranial volume, and depression. With the Mini-Mental State Examination scores included as an additional covariate, the correlation of right putamen GMV with behavioral and emotional score, right MTG GMV with total and emotional score, and right IFG GMV with emotional score were significant.

CONCLUSION

The findings implicate putamen, MTG and IFG atrophy in AD associated apathy, potentially independent of cognitive impairment and depression, and suggest potentially distinct volumetric correlates of apathy.

Comparison of Functional Connectivity in the Prefrontal Cortex during a Simple and an Emotional Go/No-Go Task in Female versus Male Groups: An fNIRS Study

Inhibitory control is a cognitive process to suppress prepotent behavioral responses to stimuli. This study aimed to investigate prefrontal functional connectivity during a behavioral inhibition task and its correlation with the subject’s performance. Additionally, we identified connections that are specific to the Go/No-Go task. The experiment was performed on 42 normal, healthy adults who underwent a vanilla baseline and a simple and emotional Go/No-Go task. Cerebral hemodynamic responses were measured in the prefrontal cortex using a 16-channel near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device. Functional connectivity was calculated from NIRS signals and correlated to the Go/No-Go performance. Strong connectivity was found in both the tasks in the right hemisphere, inter-hemispherically, and the left medial prefrontal cortex. Better performance (fewer errors, faster response) is associated with stronger prefrontal connectivity during the simple Go/No-Go in both sexes and the emotional Go/No-Go connectivity in males. However, females express a lower emotional Go/No-Go connectivity while performing better on the task. This study reports a complete prefrontal network during a simple and emotional Go/No-Go and its correlation with the subject’s performance in females and males. The results can be applied to examine behavioral inhibitory control deficits in population with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Effect of Exoskeleton-Assisted Rehabilitation Over Prefrontal Cortex in Multiple Sclerosis Patients: A Neuroimaging Pilot Study

Application of a passive and fully articulated exoskeleton, called Human Body Posturizer (HBP), has been demonstrated to improve mobility, response accuracy and ambulation in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. By using functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) during a visuomotor discrimination task, we performed a pilot study to evaluate the effect of HBP over the neural correlates of motor and cognitive functions which are typically impaired in MS patients. Specifically, we tested the effect of a 6-week multidisciplinary rehabilitation intervention on two groups of MS patients: a control group who followed a standard physiotherapeutic rehabilitation protocol, and an experimental group who used the HBP during physical exercises in addition to the standard protocol. We found that, after treatment, the experimental group exhibited a significant lower activity (as compared to the control group) in the inferior frontal gyrus. This post-treatment activity reduction can be explained as a retour to a normal range, being the amount of iFg activity observed in the experimental patients very similar to that observed in healthy subjects. These findings indicate that the use of HBP during rehabilitation intervention normalizes the prefrontal activity, mitigating the cortical hyperactivity associated to MS.

Brain gray matter structures associated with trait impulsivity: A systematic review and voxel-based meta-analysis

Trait impulsivity is a multifaceted personality characteristic that contributes to maladaptive life outcomes. Although a growing body of neuroimaging studies have investigated the structural correlates of trait impulsivity, the findings remain highly inconsistent and heterogeneous. Herein, we performed a systematic review to depict an integrated delineation of gray matter (GM) substrates of trait impulsivity and a meta-analysis to examine concurrence across previous whole-brain voxel-based morphometry studies. The systematic review summarized the diverse findings in GM morphometry in the past literature, and the quantitative meta-analysis revealed impulsivity-related volumetric GM alterations in prefrontal, temporal, and parietal cortices. In addition, we identified the modulatory effects of age and gender in impulsivity-GM volume associations. The present study advances understanding of brain GM morphometry features underlying trait impulsivity. The findings may have practical implications in the clinical diagnosis of and intervention for impulsivity-related disorders.

Mouse Tracking to Explore Motor Inhibition Processes in Go/No-Go and Stop Signal Tasks

Response inhibition relies on both proactive and reactive mechanisms that exert a synergic control on goal-directed actions. It is typically evaluated by the go/no-go (GNG) and the stop signal task (SST) with response recording based on the key-press method. However, the analysis of discrete variables (i.e., present or absent responses) registered by key-press could be insufficient to capture dynamic aspects of inhibitory control. Trying to overcome this limitation, in the present study we used a mouse tracking procedure to characterize movement profiles related to proactive and reactive inhibition. A total of fifty-three participants performed a cued GNG and an SST. The cued GNG mainly involves proactive control whereas the reactive component is mainly engaged in the SST. We evaluated the velocity profile from mouse trajectories both for responses obtained in the Go conditions and for inhibitory failures. Movements were classified as one-shot when no corrections were observed. Multi-peaked velocity profiles were classified as non-one-shot. A higher proportion of one-shot movements was found in the SST compared to the cued GNG when subjects failed to inhibit responses. This result suggests that proactive control may be responsible for unsmooth profiles in inhibition failures, supporting a differentiation between these tasks.
