Abstract
Food addiction (FA) and disordered eating behaviors related to obesity are gaining attention in clinical and research fields. The modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (mYFAS2.0) is the gold standard questionnaire to measure FA, while another tool is the Measure of Eating Compulsivity 10 (MEC10). Discriminant validity is present when two measures of similar but distinct constructs show a correlation that is low enough for the factors to be regarded as distinct. However, the discriminant validity of these measures has never been tested. Through a cross-sectional study design, 717 inpatients (females: 56.20%, age: 53.681 ± 12.74) with severe obesity completed the MEC10, Binge Eating Scale (BES), and mYFAS2.0. A structural equation model (SEM) was fitted, freely estimating latent correlations with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The results confirmed the scales' excellent psychometric properties. Importantly, latent factor correlations between MEC10 and mYFAS2.0 (est = 0.783, 95% CI [0.76, 0.80]) supported their discriminant validity. In contrast, the latent correlation of MEC10 and BES (est = 0.86, 95% CI [0.84, 0.87]) exceeded the recommended thresholds, indicating the absence of discriminant validity and suggesting a potential overlap, consistent with previous evidence. In conclusion, MEC10 demonstrates excellent psychometric properties but is more a measure of BED and not FA.

Abstract
Previous work suggests there may be an effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on appetite control in people at risk of overconsumption, however findings are inconsistent. This study aimed to further understand the potential eating behaviour trait-dependent effect of tDCS, specifically in those with binge-type behaviour. Seventeen females (23 ± 7 years, 25.4 ± 3.8 kg m-2) with mild-to-moderate binge eating behaviour completed two sessions of double-blind, randomised and counterbalanced anodal and sham tDCS applied over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at 2.0 mA for 20 min. Subjective appetite visual analogue scales (VAS), the Food Craving Questionnaire-State (FCQ-S), and Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire (LFPQ) were completed pre- and post-tDCS. Participants then consumed a fixed-energy meal, followed by the VAS, FCQ-S and LFPQ. No difference between pre- and post-tDCS scores were found across fullness (p = 0.275, BF10 = 0.040), prospective consumption (p = 0.127, BF10 = 0.063), desire to eat (p = 0.247, BF10 = 0.054) or FCQ-S measures (p = 0.918, BF10 = 0.040) when comparing active and sham protocols. Only explicit liking and wanting for high-fat sweet foods were significantly different between conditions, with increased scores following active tDCS. When controlling for baseline hunger, the significant differences were removed (p = 0.138 to 0.161, BF10 = 0.810 to 1.074). The present data does not support the eating behaviour trait dependency of tDCS in a specific cohort of female participants with mild-to-moderate binge eating scores, and results align with those from individuals with healthy trait scores. This suggests participants with sub-clinical binge eating behaviour do not respond to tDCS. Future work should further explore effects in clinical and sub-clinical populations displaying susceptibility to overconsumption and weight gain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic and bariatric surgery is effective for sustained weight loss, but binge eating disorder (BED) can be associated with poorer outcomes and lead to weight regain. A common measure used to screen for BED is the Binge Eating Scale (BES). A BES cut-off score of ≥17 previously identified patients who have a high likelihood of meeting criteria for BED. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), lowered the threshold for meeting criteria for BED, and the psychometrics of the BES need to be reevaluated. OBJECTIVE The objective of the current investigation is to evaluate whether alternative cut-scores on the BES result in better classification of BED based on the DSM-5 revision of the the BED diagnostic criteria. SETTING Academic medical hospital in the Midwestern United States. METHODS Patients (n =1133) seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery were randomly split into 2 samples for validation and replication. The validation sample consisted of 561 patients (30.1% men, 35% non-White). The replication sample consisted of 572 patients who were demographically similar to the first random split sample (e.g., 25.3% men, 34.4% non-White). RESULTS Of these patients, 13.5% met DSM-5 criteria for BED in the validation sample and 13.8% met criteria for BED in the replication sample. Lowering the interpretative cut-off to ≥15 on the BES yielded sensitivity values of >.72, specificity values of >.67, and an accurate classification of BED in >.70 of patients across both samples. These classification values were as good as or better than the standard cut-off score of ≥17 in both samples. CONCLUSIONS The BES is appropriate to screen for BED in patients who are seeking bariatric surgery. A 2-point decrease in the BES score for clinical interpretation is appropriate-lowering it from 17 to 15 given DSM-5 updates to diagnostic criteria.

Abstract
The Eating Disorders In weight-related Therapy (EDIT) Collaboration brings together data from randomised controlled trials of behavioural weight management interventions to identify individual participant risk factors and intervention strategies that contribute to eating disorder risk. We present a protocol for a systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis which aims to identify participants at risk of developing eating disorders, or related symptoms, during or after weight management interventions conducted in adolescents or adults with overweight or obesity. We systematically searched four databases up to March 2022 and clinical trials registries to May 2022 to identify randomised controlled trials of weight management interventions conducted in adolescents or adults with overweight or obesity that measured eating disorder risk at pre- and post-intervention or follow-up. Authors from eligible trials have been invited to share their deidentified IPD. Two IPD meta-analyses will be conducted. The first IPD meta-analysis aims to examine participant level factors associated with a change in eating disorder scores during and following a weight management intervention. To do this we will examine baseline variables that predict change in eating disorder risk within intervention arms. The second IPD meta-analysis aims to assess whether there are participant level factors that predict whether participation in an intervention is more or less likely than no intervention to lead to a change in eating disorder risk. To do this, we will examine if there are differences in predictors of eating disorder risk between intervention and no-treatment control arms. The primary outcome will be a standardised mean difference in global eating disorder score from baseline to immediately post-intervention and at 6- and 12- months follow-up. Identifying participant level risk factors predicting eating disorder risk will inform screening and monitoring protocols to allow early identification and intervention for those at risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the comparative effects of various bariatric procedures on patient-reported outcomes. We aimed to compare 3-year effects of gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy on patient-reported outcome measures in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. METHODS The Oseberg trial was a single-centre, parallel-group, randomised trial at Vestfold Hospital Trust, a public tertiary obesity centre in Tønsberg, Norway. Eligible patients were aged 18 years or older with previously verified BMI 35·0 kg/m2 or greater. Diabetes was diagnosed if glycated haemoglobin was at least 6·5% (48 mmol/mol) or by their use of anti-diabetic medications with glycated haemoglobin at least 6·1% (43 mmol/mol). Eligible patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. All patients received identical preoperative and postoperative treatment. Randomisation was done with a computerised random number generator and a block size of ten. Study personnel, patients, and the primary outcome assessor were blinded to allocations for 1 year. The prespecified secondary outcomes reported here were 3-year changes in several clinically important patient-reported outcomes, weight loss, and diabetes remission. Analyses were done in the intention to treat population. This trial is ongoing, closed to recruitment and is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01778738. FINDINGS Between Oct 15, 2012 and Sept 1, 2017, 319 consecutive patients with type 2 diabetes scheduled for bariatric surgery were assessed for eligibility. 101 patients were not eligible (29 did not have type 2 diabetes according to inclusion criteria and 72 other exclusion criteria) and 93 declined to participate. 109 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to sleeve gastrectomy (n=55) or gastric bypass (n=54). 72 (66%) of 109 patients were female and 37 (34%) were male. 104 (95%) of patients were White. 16 patients were lost to follow up and 93 (85%) patients completed the 3-year follow-up. Three additional patients were contacted by phone for registration of comorbidities Compared with sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass was associated with a greater improvement in weight-related quality of life (between group difference 9·4, 95% CI 3·3 to 15·5), less reflux symptoms (0·54, 0·17 to -0·90), greater total bodyweight loss (8% difference, 25% vs 17%), and a higher probability of diabetes remission (67% vs 33%, risk ratio 2·00; 95% CI 1·27 to 3·14). Five patients reported postprandial hypoglycaemia in the third year after gastric bypass versus none after sleeve-gastrectomy (p=0·059). Symptoms of abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, dumping syndrome, depression, binge eating, and appetitive drive did not differ between groups. INTERPRETATION At 3 years, gastric bypass was superior to sleeve gastrectomy in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity regarding weight related quality of life, reflux symptoms, weight loss, and remission of diabetes, while symptoms of abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, dumping, depression and binge eating did not differ between groups. This new patient-reported knowledge can be used in the shared decision-making process to inform patients about similarities and differences between expected outcomes after the two surgical procedures. Abstract
BACKGROUND Problematic eating behaviors can indicate obesity-related problems. Food addiction (FA) is not classified as an official diagnosis. However, given the many commonalities between FA and binge-eating disorder (BED) within the context of obesity, it is imperative to conduct a comparative investigation. The current study aimed to identify overlapping and distinctive features in emotion dysregulation as an underlying mechanism and emotional eating as a clinical feature among four groups of females with obesity seeking bariatric surgery. METHODS Data on emotion dysregulation and emotional eating were derived from the total 128 Females with obesity seeking bariatric surgery (Mage = 38.91 ± 10.59, MBMI = 42.10 kg/m2 ± 4.43) divided into four groups: those with FA (n = 35), BED (n = 35), BED + FA (n = 31) and a control group of individuals with obesity only (OB; n = 27), using well-established measures. RESULTS Regarding descriptive statistics, the BED + FA group showed the highest levels of emotional dysregulation (M = 111.09) and emotional eating (M = 46.80), while the OB group acquired the lowest scores (M = 70.44 and M = 27.29, respectively). Univariate analyses of variance revealed significant differences between the four groups in terms of emotion dysregulation F(3, 124) = 24.63, p < .01 and emotional eating F(3, 124) = 26.26, p < .01. All of the emotion dysregulation domains revealed significant differences too. Pairwise comparisons using Bonferroni post hoc tests did not reveal any significant differences between BED + FA and BED groups, while all of our other hypotheses regarding this matter were confirmed. CONCLUSIONS The study found that individuals with obesity and comorbid BED exhibit greater emotional dysregulation compared to those with OB or FA, indicating a need to assess BED in individuals with obesity. Emotion dysregulation may be linked to increased BED and FA, but those with BED seem more affected by limited access to emotion regulation strategies. These findings support the notion that PEBs are associated with emotion dysregulation and underscore the need for tailored interventions that target emotion regulation skills before and after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
In adolescents and adults, the co-occurrence of eating disorders and overweight or obesity is continuing to increase, and the prevalence of eating disorders is higher in people with higher weight compared to those with lower weight. People with an eating disorder with higher weight are more likely to present for weight loss than for eating disorder treatment. However, there are no clinical practice guidelines on how to screen, assess, and monitor eating disorder risk in the context of obesity treatment. In this article, we first summarize current challenges and knowledge gaps related to the identification and assessment of eating disorder risk and symptoms in people with higher weight seeking obesity treatment. Specifically, we discuss considerations relating to the validation of current self-report measures, dietary restraint, body dissatisfaction, binge eating, and how change in eating disorder risk can be measured in this setting. Second, we propose avenues for further research to guide the development and implementation of clinical and research protocols for the identification and assessment of eating disorders in people with higher weight in the context of obesity treatment. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: The number of people with both eating disorders and higher weight is increasing. Currently, there is little guidance for clinicians and researchers about how to identify and monitor risk of eating disorders in people with higher weight. We present limitations of current research and suggest future avenues for research to enhance care for people living with higher weight with eating disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Although bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment of severe obesity, a proportion of patients experience clinically significant weight regain (WR) with further out from surgery. The purpose of this review is to summarize the prevalence, predictors, and causes of weight regain. RECENT FINDINGS Estimating the prevalence of WR is limited by a lack of consensus on its definition. While anatomic failures such as dilated gastric fundus after sleeve gastrectomy and gastro-gastric fistula after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass can lead to WR, the most common causes appear to be dysregulated/maladaptive eating behaviors, lifestyle factors, and physiological compensatory mechanisms. To date, dietary, supportive, behavioral, and exercise interventions have not demonstrated a clinically meaningful impact on WR, and there is limited evidence for pharmacotherapy. Future studies should be aimed at better defining WR to begin to understand the etiologies. Additionally, there is a need for non-surgical interventions with demonstrated efficacy in rigorous randomized controlled trials for the prevention and reversal of WR after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this research is to test the psychometric properties and factorial structure of the Addiction-like Eating Behaviors Scale (AEBS) in an Italian sample of adults with severe obesity seeking treatment for weight reduction and the general population, and to examine the measurement invariance of the tool by comparing a clinical and a nonclinical sample. METHODS A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was initially conducted to test the factorial structure of the Italian version of the AEBS (AEBS-IT) on a total of 953 participants. Following this, the measurement invariance and psychometric properties of the tool AEBS-IT were assessed on both inpatients with severe obesity (n = 502) and individuals from the general population (n = 451). Reliability and convergent validity analysis were also run. RESULTS CFA revealed a bi-factor structure for the AEBS-IT, which also showed good reliability and positive correlations with food addiction (through the mYFAS2.0 symptom count), binge-eating symptoms, compulsive eating behavior, and dysfunctional eating patterns and the individuals' body mass index (BMI). Moreover, the tool was invariant across populations. CONCLUSION This study provided evidence that the AEBS-IT is a valid and reliable measure of FA in both clinical and nonclinical samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery is an established, effective treatment for severe adolescent obesity. Long-term dietary intake and the relationship to eating-related problems are scarcely evaluated in this population. OBJECTIVES Assess changes in dietary intake in adolescents after RYGB and explore associations between dietary intake and eating-related problems. SETTING Multicenter study in Swedish university hospitals. METHOD Diet history, binge eating scale (BES), and Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire were assessed preoperatively and 1, 2, and 5 years after RYGB in 85 adolescents (67% female) aged 16.5 ± 1.2 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 45.5 ± 6.0 kg/m2 and compared with control individuals at 5 years. RESULTS Five-year BMI change was -28.6% ± 12.7% versus +9.9% ± 18.9% in RYGB patients versus control individuals (P < .001). Through 5 years, RYGB adolescents reported reduced energy intake, portion size of cooked meals at dinner, and milk/yoghurt consumption (P < .01). The BES scores were 9.3 ± 8.3 versus 13.4 ± 10.5 in RYGB patients versus control individuals (P = .04). Association between BES score and energy intake was stronger in control individuals (r = .27 versus r = .62 in RYGB patients versus control individuals, P < .001). At 5 years, lower energy intake was associated with greater BMI loss in all adolescents (r = .33, P < .001). Higher scores in BES and uncontrolled and emotional eating were associated with higher energy intake, cooked meals, candies/chocolates, cakes/cookies, desserts, and sugary drinks (r > .23, P < .04) and lower intake of fruits/berries (r = -.32, P = .044). A higher score in cognitive restraint was associated with a higher intake of cereals and fruits/berries (r > .22, P < .05) and a lower intake of sugary drinks (r = -.24, P < .03). CONCLUSION To support optimization of long-term outcomes in adolescent RYGB patients, it is important to provide management strategies to reduce energy intake. Monitoring eating-related problems could identify potential individuals at risk of poor weight loss and to initiate treatment interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Eating disorders are common among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), contributing to their lack of treatment response and bad prognosis. In this context, it is helpful to examine the relevance of eating behavior and to understand whether borderline traits are higher in those individuals. In this study, a sample of patients with BPD screened to determine the frequency of binge eating (BE) behaviors and its relation to impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. METHOD Seventy participants aged 25.81 ± 6.34 years were recruited from Okasha Institute of psychiatry, Cairo, Egypt. Diagnosed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II disorders (SCID-II), assessed for impulsivity, emotion regulation using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale and the Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS), respectively, and screened for BE behaviors by Binge Eating Scale. RESULTS All of the participants had medium emotional regulation propensity 82.63 ± 10.81 and showed variable degrees of impulsivity, mainly moderate 42 (60%). More than half of the participants had BE behavior 37 (~ 53%), with a significant negative correlation with clarity of feeling, total score of TMMS, and age. Similarly, on comparing the participant with binging versus no binging group, a significant relation between BE behavior, fear of abandonment (p value 0.02), clarity of feeling, and total score of TMMS was found. However, no significant relation between BE behavior & impulsivity demonstrated. CONCLUSION A substantial number of patients with BPD suffering from BE, showing relation between binging, emotion dysregulation, and fear of abandonment. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III, evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aimed to examine the validity of self-report screening questionnaires for identifying eating disorder (ED) risk in adults and adolescents with overweight/obesity. METHOD Five databases were searched from inception to September 2020 for studies assessing validation of self-report ED screening questionnaires against diagnostic interviews in adolescents and adults with overweight/obesity. The review was registered with PROSPERO (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/display_record.php?RecordID=220013). RESULTS Twenty-seven papers examining 15 questionnaires were included. Most studies validated questionnaires for adults (22 of 27 studies), and most questionnaires (12 of 15) screened for binge eating or binge-eating disorder (BED). The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (sensitivity = .16-.88, specificity = .62-1.0) and Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (sensitivity = .07-1.0, specificity = .0-1.0) were most frequently validated (six studies each). Five studies of three questionnaires were in adolescents, with the Adolescent Binge-Eating Disorder Questionnaire having highest sensitivity (1.0) but lower specificity (.27). Questionnaires designed to screen for BED generally had higher diagnostic accuracy than those screening for EDs in general. DISCUSSION Questionnaires have been well validated to identify BED in adults with overweight/obesity. Validated screening tools to identify other EDs in adults and any ED in adolescents with overweight/obesity are lacking. Thus, clinical assessment should inform the identification of patients with co-morbid EDs and overweight/obesity. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Individuals with overweight/obesity are at increased risk of EDs. This review highlights literature gaps regarding screening for ED risk in this vulnerable group. This work presents possibilities for improving care of individuals with overweight/obesity by reinventing ED screening tools to be better suited to diverse populations.

Abstract
Up to 64% of patients seeking bariatric (weight-loss) surgery report eating disorder (ED) symptoms (addictive-like eating, binge eating, emotional eating, grazing) that can interfere with post-surgical weight loss. This prospective proof-of-concept study aimed to evaluate the impact of a pre-surgical mindfulness-informed intervention (MII) on ED symptoms and potential mechanisms-of-action to inform optimization of the intervention. Surgery-seeking adults attended four, 2-hour, MII sessions held weekly. Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing ED symptoms, eating self-efficacy, emotion regulation, and mindful eating pre-MII, post-MII, and at a 12-week follow-up. The MII consisted of mindfulness training, with cognitive, behavioral, and psychoeducational components. Fifty-six patients (M = 47.41 years old, 89.3% female) participated. Improvements in addictive-like eating, binge eating, emotional eating, and grazing were observed from pre- to post-MII. ED symptom treatment gains were either maintained or improved further at 12-week follow-up. Eating self-efficacy and emotion regulation improved from pre-MII to follow-up. Scores on the mindful eating questionnaire deteriorated from pre-MII to follow-up. In mediation analyses, there was a combined indirect effect of emotion regulation, eating self-efficacy, and mindful eating on grazing and binge eating, and an indirect effect of emotion regulation on emotional eating and addictive-like eating. Participation in the MII was associated with improvements in ED symptoms and some mechanisms-of-action, establishing proof-of-concept for the intervention. Future work to establish the MII's efficacy in a randomized controlled trial is warranted.

Abstract
Background This Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) Clinical Practice Statement (CPS) is intended to provide clinicians an overview of "Behavior, Motivational Interviewing, Eating Disorders, and Obesity Management Technologies." Methods The scientific information for this CPS is based upon published scientific citations, clinical perspectives of OMA authors, and peer review by the Obesity Medicine Association leadership. Results This CPS outlines important components of behavior, motivational interviewing, eating disorders, and obesity management technologies as they relate to pre-obesity and obesity. Topics include eating behavior disorder evaluation, the motivations behind eating and physical activity behaviors (including underlying neurophysiology, eating disorders, environmental factors, and personal prioritization), motivational interviewing techniques, and technologies that may assist with pre-obesity/obesity management. Conclusions This Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) Clinical Practice Statement (CPS) on "Behavior, Motivational Interviewing, Eating Disorders, and Obesity Management Technologies" is one of a series of OMA CPSs designed to assist clinicians in the care of patients with the disease of pre-obesity/obesity. Implementation of appropriate clinical practices in these areas may improve the health of patients, especially those with adverse fat mass and adiposopathic metabolic consequences.

Abstract
The Norse Feedback (NF) is a questionnaire developed for patient-reported outcome monitoring with a clinical feedback system (PRO/CFS). As mental health is a concern after bariatric surgery, the use of the NF as part of PRO/CFS may be beneficial. The aim of this study is to test the reliability and validity of the NF in patients who have been accepted for or have undergone bariatric surgery. We performed separate robust confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) to test the unidimensionality on 19 of the NF scales. We also performed correlation analyses on 19 of the NF scales with the Obesity-related Problems scale (OP). We included 213 patients. In the CFA analyses, three out of 12 scales with four or more items showed satisfactory psychometric properties in all goodness of fit indices (Suicidality, Need for Control and Self-Criticism). Four scales showed satisfactory psychometric properties in all indices but RMSEA (Somatic Anxiety, Substance Use, Social Safety and Cognitive Problems). Several of the scales demonstrated floor effects. In the correlation analyses, 18 of the 19 scales showed small-to-moderate correlation coefficients with the OP. Our demonstration of satisfactory psychometric properties on several important scales of the NF suggests that this tool may prove valuable in the routine follow-up of mental health in this population. However, further work is needed to innovate the NF for patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many individuals who undergo bariatric surgery have experienced repeated unsuccessful diet attempts and negative messages from healthcare providers, family, and others about their weight. Research pre- and post-operatively has taken a pathological or risk-based approach, investigating psychiatric problems and disordered eating. In contrast, the current study explores resilience in this population. METHODS Participants were 148 bariatric surgery patients. Participants completed measures pre-operatively and 1.5-3 years post-operatively, including the Binge Eating Scale, Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Questionnaire, Impact of Weight on Quality of Life, Coping Responses Inventory, and Duke Social Support and Stress Scales. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was measured post-operatively. RESULTS Correlations demonstrated a significant association between post-operative resilience and lower symptoms of binge eating, disordered eating, depression, anxiety, and impact of weight on quality of life. Resilience was also associated with greater social support and less social stress, and greater use of approach coping strategies. Resilience was significantly associated with improvements in symptoms of binge eating, disordered eating, depression, anxiety, and impact of weight on quality of life from pre- to post-operative assessments. In regression models, associations remained significant after controlling for psychosocial variables at baseline (e.g., binge eating symptoms pre-operatively) and demographic covariates. CONCLUSIONS Psychological resilience has been under-studied in the literature on obesity and bariatric surgery, with a primary focus on risk factors for poor outcomes. This study was among the first to investigate associations between resilience and post-operative psychological outcomes. Results suggest the field would benefit from consideration of patient resilience in psychological assessments and interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence suggest that problematic eating behaviors such as food addiction (FA) and binge eating (BE) may alter following bariatric surgery (BS) and impact weight outcomes. We aimed to examine the prevalence of FA and BE and their associations with weight outcomes 2 years post-sleeve gastrectomy (SG). METHODS Forty-five women (mean age 32.4 ± 10.9 years) who underwent SG and completed 24 months of follow-up were evaluated prospectively at pre-, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-month post-SG. Data collected included anthropometrics, nutritional intake, and lifestyle patterns. The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) and the Binge Eating Scale (BES) were used to characterize FA and BE, respectively. RESULTS Pre-surgery FA and BE were identified in 40.0% and 46.7% of participants, respectively. Following SG, FA and BE prevalence was 10.0%, 5.0%, 29.4%, and 14.2% (P = 0.007), and 12.5%, 4.9%, 18.4%, and 19.4% (P < 0.001) at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, respectively. Women with BE at baseline gained significantly more weight from the nadir compared to non-BE women at baseline (P = 0.009). There was no relationship between FA at baseline and weight (P = 0.090). Weight regained from the nadir positively correlated with BES scores at baseline (r = 0.374, P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS FA and BE tend to decrease during the early postoperative period, but remains in a notable rates return by 2 years post-SG. Moreover, pre-surgical BE was related to higher weight-regain. Proper management pre-BS should include a comprehensive eating pathologies assessment, as these pathologies may remain or re-emerge post-surgery and lead to worse weight outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has become one of the most commonly used psychotherapeutic treatments for obesity. It stems from CBT for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, which focuses on amelioration of the eating behavior and body image dissatisfaction (BID), but usually does not focus on weight loss. In contrast, CBT for obesity focuses on weight loss, as well as eating behavior and BID. It is at present unclear whether the improvement of BID during CBT for obesity is associated with improvement of factors other than weight loss. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether improvement of BID during CBT for obesity was associated with improvement of factors other than weight loss. METHODS One hundred and sixty-five women (BMI 31.8 ± 5.2 kg/m2, age 49.3 ± 10.5 years) with overweight or obesity completed a 7-month CBT-based weight loss intervention. BID, depression, anxiety, binge eating, and perfectionism were assessed at both baseline and the end of the intervention through the use of psychological questionnaires. RESULTS Percent total weight loss, baseline BID, baseline binge eating disorder (BED), change in depression (Δdepression), Δstate anxiety, Δtrait anxiety, Δbinge eating, and Δperfectionism were significantly correlated with ΔBID. Multiple regression analysis showed that baseline BID, baseline BED, percent total weight loss, Δbinge eating, and Δdepression were independently associated with ΔBID. CONCLUSION Improvement of binge eating, and improvement of depression, as well as weight loss, were independently associated with amelioration of BID. Abstract
Central Italy suffered from the earthquake of 2016 resulting in great damage to the community. The purpose of the present study was to determine the long-term traumatic outcomes among the population. A preliminary study aimed at obtaining the Italian translation of the first 16 item of HTQ IV part [1] which was administered, 20 months after the disaster, at 281 survivors. In backward stepwise logistic regressions models, we estimated among the respondent's characteristics and event-related variables the best predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) revealed a HTQ five-factors solution as best model, with satisfactory indexes of fit. HTQ held a positive correlation with both the SQD-P (r = .65, p < .05) and SQD-D subscales (r = .47, p < .05). ROC analysis suggested an area of .951 (95% CI = .917-.985) for the PTSD prediction. Basing on sensibility (.963) and specificity (.189), the best cut-off of 2.0 allowed discriminating for PTSD positive cases. After 20 months of the earthquake, the estimate prevalence of PTSD among the survivors is of 21.71% with a consistent and graded association between exposure variables and vulnerability factors (gender, age, exposure to death and home damage) and PTSD symptoms.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery has been shown to have a variety of metabolically beneficial effects for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and is now also called metabolic surgery. At the 2nd Diabetes Surgery Summit held in 2015 in London, the indication for bariatric and metabolic surgery was included in the “algorithm for patients with type T2D”. With this background, the Japanese Society for Treatment of Obesity (JSTO), the Japan Diabetes Society (JDS) and the Japan Society for the Study of Obesity (JASSO) have formed a joint committee to develop a consensus statement regarding bariatric and metabolic surgery for the treatment of Japanese patients with T2D. Eventually, the consensus statement was announced at the joint meeting of the 38th Annual Meeting of JSTO and the 41st Annual Meeting of JASSO convened in Toyama on March 21, 2021. In preparing the consensus statement, we used Japanese data as much as possible as scientific evidence to consider the indication criteria, and set two types of recommendation grades, “recommendation” and “consideration”, for items for which recommendations are possible. We hope that this statement will be helpful in providing evidence-based high-quality care through bariatric and metabolic surgery for the treatment of obese Japanese patients with T2D.

Abstract
Even though bariatric surgeries (BS) are on the rise in Lebanon and the Middle East, the changes in diet quality, binge eating, and food cravings in this region are poorly studied peri-operatively. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess binge eating behaviors, food craving and the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) in Lebanese patients who underwent BS in a duration that exceeds 6 months. Evaluation included a dietary assessment of usual diet preoperatively and postoperatively. It included the collection of information on sociodemographic, anthropometric and surgical variables, as well as the administration of dietary recalls and questionnaires to calculate the HEI score, the Binge Eating Scale (BES) and the Food Craving Inventory (FCI). Participants (n = 60) were mostly females (85%) who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy (90%), with a mean duration since BS of 2.4 ± 1.8 years. Despite improvements in their HEI scores, 97% of the participants remained in the worst category. The frequency of participants in the severe BES category dropped markedly postoperatively from 78% to 5% (p < 0.01). Food craving followed a similar trend, with scores dropping from 50 ± 36 pre-surgery to 30 ± 25 post surgery (p < 0.01). Weight regain, prevalent among 40% of participants, was predicted by BES. Despite the improvement in BES and FCI, HEI improvement remained shy. Future interventions should validate findings in other countries and assess means for optimizing HEI scores among BS patients in the Middle East region.

Abstract
Background: Patients in the postoperative period following bariatric surgery are at risk of developing eating disorders. This study aims to analyze the relation between bariatric surgery and the development and recurrence of eating disorders. Material and methods: A literature review was carried out on 15 November 2020. Fourteen studies that met the eligibility criteria were included for qualitative synthesis, and 7 studies for meta-analysis. Results: The prevalence of eating disorders in the postoperative period was 7.83%, based on the 7 studies in the meta-analysis. Binge eating disorder alone was 3.81%, which was the most significant factor, and addressed in 6 of these studies. Conclusion: The investigated studies have significant methodological limitations in assessing the relation between bariatric surgery and eating disorders, since they mostly present data on prevalence. Abstract
PURPOSE Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is increasingly used in adolescents. The aim was to explore symptoms of depression and anxiety in young adults over 5 years' follow-up after undergoing MBS. METHODS Beck Depression Inventory-2 and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to assess symptoms of depression and anxiety in 62 patients 1, 2, and 5 years after having Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at 13-18 years of age. Mental health, eating-related problems, and weight outcomes were tested for association with suicidal ideation at the 5-year follow-up. RESULTS At the 5-year follow-up, the mean score for depression was 11.4 (± 12.4), indicating minimal symptoms of depression. The mean score for anxiety was 12.82 (± 11.50), indicating mild anxiety symptoms. Still, several participants reported moderate or severe symptoms of depression (26%) and anxiety (32%). Women reported more symptoms than men (P = 0.03 and 0.04). No significant changes were found in self-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety between the 1-year and the 5-year follow-up (P = 0.367 and 0.934). Suicidal ideation was reported by 16% at the 5-year follow-up. Participants reporting suicidal ideation had lost significantly less excess weight than participants without suicidal ideation (P = 0.009). CONCLUSION Five years after adolescent MBS, a substantial minority still struggles with mental health issues, and women are more burdened than men. Our results indicate an association between less optimal weight loss and suicidal ideation 5 years after MBS. The findings emphasize the importance of offering long-term follow-up and mental health treatment several years after MBS. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, cohort study. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the risk of eating disorders, psychological distress, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people with class 3 obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 40 kg/m2), and the effect of multidisciplinary weight management over 12 months. This retrospective cohort study included all adults with class 3 obesity who enrolled in a weight management program from March 2018 to December 2019. Questionnaires included the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire Short (EDE-QS), Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), and 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) for HRQoL. Physical and Mental Component Summary scores (PCS and MCS) were derived from the SF-36. Of 169 participants who completed 12 months in the program, 65.7% (n = 111) completed questionnaires at baseline and 12 months, with 6.0 ± 6.8% weight loss over this period. Compared to baseline, there was significant improvement at 12 months in EDE-QS (15.7 ± 6.6 vs. 13.6 ± 6.2, p = 0.002), K10 (25.7 ± 9.7 vs. 21.2 ± 9.4, p < 0.001), PCS (29.4 ± 10.1 vs. 36.1 ± 10.9, p < 0.001), and MCS scores (40.2 ± 12.4 vs. 44.0 ± 13.4, p = 0.001). All, apart from EDE-QS scores, remained significant after adjusting for weight change. This study highlights the importance of multidisciplinary management in people with class 3 obesity to help reduce eating disorder risk and psychological distress, and improve HRQoL, in addition to weight loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Existing screening tools are inadequate in differentiating binge eating from normative overeating in treatment-seeking individuals with overweight or obesity, as these individuals tend to overendorse loss-of-control (LOC; the hallmark characteristic of binge eating) on self-report measures. In order for treatment centers to efficiently and accurately identify individuals who would benefit from specialized treatment, it is critical to develop effective brief screening tools. This study examined the sensitivity and specificity of a self-report screener designed to be used by an outpatient treatment center on a large scale. METHODS Participants were treatment-seeking individuals (N = 364) with overweight or obesity who were administered the screener and who completed a subsequent interview assessing for LOC and binge eating. RESULTS Discriminant analyses revealed that the screener achieved 77.6% sensitivity and 77.0% specificity in predicting clinician-assessed LOC and 75.2% sensitivity and 74.1% specificity in predicting "full-threshold" binge eating (i.e., ≥12 objectively large binge-eating episodes within the past 3 months). Post hoc analyses indicated that male participants were more likely to be misclassified with the screener. CONCLUSIONS The self-report screener demonstrated satisfactory predictive ability, which is notable given the challenges of discriminating between LOC and normative overeating. However, room for improvement remains. In particular, the inclusion of additional screener items that more fully capture the binge-eating experience in males is warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE Identify, 18 months after bariatric surgery, the binge eating variation and its relation with weight regain or loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-sectional, retrospective study with 108 patients, assisted by an obesity walk-in clinic of a specialized hospital in São Paulo (Brazil), who had undergone bariatric surgery a minimum of 18 months previously. The anthropometric and clinic data were collected from medical records, and binge eating symptoms were evaluated with the application of the Binge Eating Scale (BES). Scale outcomes were related to weight regain and loss at the application moment. RESULTS The average age (standard error) of the sample was 47 years (±0.91) and 93% were female. Patients had lost 52.2% of their body weight and regained 4.7% of their weight 18 months after the surgery. The elapsed surgical time (> 50 months) was associated with a higher gross weight (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Bariatric surgery has been shown to be effective for improving diabetes mellitus as well as for controlling obesity. The variation in binge eating intensity 18 months after bariatric surgery is a factor that interferes in the amount of weight regained. The presence of binge eating symptoms negatively affects the % total weight loss (%TWL).

Abstract
Eating disorders are associated with significant medical morbidity and mortality and serious psychological impairment. Individuals seeking bariatric surgery represent a high-risk group for evidencing disordered eating and eating disorders, with some patients experiencing the persistence or onset of disordered eating postsurgery. This review synthesizes the available literature on problematic or disordered eating in the bariatric field, followed by a review of measurement and conceptual considerations related to the use of eating disorder assessment tools within the bariatric population.

Abstract
PURPOSE This cross-sectional study aimed at comparing the quality of life (Qol), the prevalence of psychiatric diagnosis and pharmacological treatment in 104 candidates to bariatric surgery according to the degree of obesity (class 2 vs. class ≥ 3 obesity). METHODS All surgical candidates underwent a detailed psychiatric interview based on DSM-5 criteria, including sociodemographic, clinical, psychological and psychiatric data. Participants completed the Binge Eating Scale (BES) and the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). RESULTS Overall, bariatric candidates reported a significant impairment in the physical (PCS 38.8 [95% CI 36.2-41.5]) and mental (MCS 42.2 [95% CI 40.4-43.9]) components of Qol compared to population norms (p < 0.001 for both). Subjects with class 2 obesity scored significantly lower in the MCS compared to those with class 3 (38.7 (8.1) vs. 43.6 (8.4), p = 0.008). No other statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of sociodemographic and clinical variables. CONCLUSION These data support the usefulness of Qol assessment in bariatric candidates as a sensible screening parameter, especially in patients with lower BMI, in whom MCS could identify the need for early psychosocial intervention. Cognitive and emotional regulation in adolescents and young women with eating disorders. Eat Weight Disord 2021; 26:375-383. Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating disorders (EDs) are associated with a reduced ability to regulate emotion and impulses during the life span. Working memory and executive functions (EFs) are cognitive regulatory systems supported by networks involving the pre-frontal cortex. Studies in EDs found impaired functioning in these domains, showing an association between EDs and the reduced ability to control emotions and impulses. OBJECTIVE To investigate EF in adolescents and young women with eating disorders (ED) using a quasi-experimental design, focusing on cognitive efficiency, emotional regulation (ER) and behavioural outcomes also taking into account pharmacological treatment and duration of illness. METHODS A sample of 151 females belonging to two groups took part in this study. Twenty-six girls and young women (Mage 22;8 years) with ED and 125 typically developed girls and young women (Mage 17;4 years) completed a battery of cognitive tasks (Go-no-go, Stop-signal task, Symmetry span, Reading Span) and the Youth Self-Report and the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale Performance. A series of ANOVA with the Brown-Forsythe test was used to compare the groups. RESULTS Participants with ED and controls did not show significant differences in EF tasks, whereas differences between younger and older participants with ED emerged. Moreover, ER difficulties seem to be associated with mainly internalizing problems in EDs. Further analysis on the full ED sample did not reveal any significant differences associated with the disorder persistence. Considering pharmacological treatment effects over cognitive, emotional and behavioural measures emerged. CONCLUSIONS The present study documented no specific differences in EF between control and participants with EDs, whereas important differences emerged in ER and behavioural outcomes perception in the clinical sample, together with a partial influence of pharmacological treatment. Abstract
PURPOSE Weight bias internalization, or the process of applying negative weight-related attitudes and beliefs to oneself, is an important construct in regard to patients pursuing bariatric surgery. Weight bias internalization (or internalized weight bias) has been previously associated with depressive symptoms and binge eating among pre-surgical bariatric patients. However, a gap in the literature exists pertaining to how certain eating behaviors may mediate the relationship between weight bias internalization and binge eating. The present study assessed the role of eating behaviors (i.e., cognitive restraint, disinhibition, and hunger) as mediators between weight bias internalization and binge eating symptoms when controlling for depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 708 adults (Mage = 42.91; White = 95.3%; women = 79.4%) seeking bariatric surgery at a tertiary academic medical center in the Appalachia region of the USA were included in this retrospective study. Patients completed validated measures of weight bias internalization, eating behaviors, and depression as part of a routine, psychological evaluation in order to determine surgical clearance. RESULTS Disinhibition and hunger were significant mediators in the relationship between weight bias internalization and binge eating beyond the role of depressive symptoms alone. CONCLUSION Disinhibited eating, or the tendency to experience a loss of control and eating in response to negative emotions, as well as subjective feelings of hunger are important dimensions of eating, particularly as related to weight bias internalization and binge eating. Weight bias internalization is an important factor to consider among pre-surgical bariatric patients and warrants additional treatment considerations.

Abstract
Approximately half of individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) fail to improve when treated with cognitive behavioral therapy; thus, better treatments are needed. Cue exposure and response prevention (CERP) may be one option, but its full potential for reducing binge eating remains unknown because prior applications for binge eating have not utilized the broad range of strategies believed to optimize exposure therapy. The current single-subject AB design investigated the acceptability and effectiveness of a comprehensive CERP treatment among 8 women who met DSM-5 criteria for binge eating disorder. Changes in the number of binges were measured from baseline to the end of treatment, and desire to eat, salivation, and idiographic expectancies of aversive outcomes to food-cue exposure (idiographic CS-US expectancies), including expectancies about ability to tolerate distress when exposed to food cues were measured across the course of treatment. Statistical analysis revealed a significant reduction in the number of binges from baseline to the end of treatment. Across the course of treatment, desire to eat and idiographic CS-US expectancies reduced, and distress tolerance expectancies increased. No participants dropped out and all reported being maximally satisfied with the treatment. Based on these findings, future randomized-control trials with larger samples should examine the efficacy of CERP and mechanisms underlying change with the aim of establishing a more effective treatment for binge eating disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body appreciation and internalized weight bias have consistently been associated with eating behaviors. However, research has yet to examine the role of these variables among presurgical bariatric patients. OBJECTIVES The present study sought to assess the relationships between body appreciation and weight bias internalization, binge eating, disinhibited eating, and symptoms of depression and anxiety among a sample of presurgical bariatric patients. The study also sought to examine the extent to which body appreciation and weight bias internalization account for unique variance in disordered eating even when controlling for depression and anxiety. SETTING Academic medical center in the United States. METHODS Data were collected on body appreciation, weight bias internalization, eating behaviors, depression, and anxiety as part of a standard presurgical psychological evaluation for bariatric surgery (n = 319). Pearson correlations were used to assess relationships between all study variables. Multiple regressions were conducted to assess the roles of body appreciation and weight bias internalization on disordered eating. RESULTS Significant associations were found between low levels of body appreciation and high levels of weight bias internalization, disordered eating, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Results indicated that body appreciation and weight bias internalization each significantly accounted for unique variance in symptoms of binge eating and disinhibited eating. Depressive symptoms were also statistically significant in all analyses. CONCLUSION Findings indicate the importance of conducting future positive body image research, as well as continuing to examine weight-related constructs, such as internalized weight bias, among bariatric surgery patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have investigated if bariatric surgery candidates with binge eating disorder (BED) are at risk for suboptimal postoperative weight loss. The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between binge eating diagnosed preoperatively and weight loss after bariatric surgery. METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, LILACS, and other specialized databases were searched on August 2020. Clinical trials and observational studies including individuals who had undergone any type of bariatric surgical treatment with preoperative evaluation of BED and at least one postoperative measure of weight were initially selected. Four reviewers independently screened for eligibility. The mean difference was calculated using the random-effects model. RESULTS Nineteen studies, comprising 3223 participants (80.25% women; median age 41 years), met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. At 6 months postoperative, the percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) was not significantly different between BED and non-BED groups [6 studies, 914 participants: - 0.75% (95% CI, - 2.79 to 1.29; I2 = 0%)], even when analyzing only those three studies that included gold standard assessment tools. No significant differences were found at 12, 24, 36, or 60 months. CONCLUSIONS Pre-bariatric BED seems to have little or no influence on weight loss after surgery. However, many questions remain unanswered because of the use of different measures across studies. The heterogeneity among studies emphasizes the importance of investigators using the same assessment measures.

Abstract
Introduction Unhealthy lifestyles may hinder bariatric surgery outcomes. This non-randomized controlled study aimed to evaluate the effects of an integrated post-operative exercise-based educational and motivational program in improving behaviors, quality of life, anthropometric features, cardiorespiratory and physical fitness in bariatric patients respect to the only surgical intervention. Methods A group of adult sedentary bariatric patients chose to attend a 12-month exercise program integrated with diet education and motivational support, or to receive usual care. Dietary habits, binge eating disorder, physical activity, obesity-related quality of life, Body Mass Index, waist and hip circumference, VO2max, strength and flexibility were assessed at the start and at the end of the study in both groups. Results On a total of 82 patients enrolled, follow-up measures were obtained from 28 (85.7% females, mean age 38.2±8.7) and 42 (71.4% females, mean age 40.2±9.5) patients included in the intervention and control group, respectively. All the behavioral and physical outcomes improved significantly in the participants to the intervention, while the control group showed lesser changes, especially regarding quality of life and physical fitness. Conclusions Notwithstanding the self-selection, these results suggest that a timely postoperative behavioral multidisciplinary program for bariatric patients may be effective in establishing healthy behaviors which can lead to better surgery outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food addiction and binge eating are common among individuals with obesity. However, a paucity of studies prospectively examined the prevalence and implications of food addiction before and post-bariatric surgery. We aimed to examine the prevalence of food addiction and binge eating before and after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and to assess their associations with behavioral and weight loss outcomes. METHODS We followed at 3 (M3), 6 (M6), and 12 (M12) months postoperative, 54 women who underwent SG. Data collected including anthropometrics, nutritional intake, food tolerance, and physical activity measures. The Yale Food Addiction Scale and the Binge Eating Scale were used to characterize food addiction and binge eating, respectively. RESULTS The mean baseline age and BMI were 32.1 ± 11.1 years and 44.9 ± 4.9 kg/m2, respectively. Pre-surgery, food addiction, and binge eating were identified in 40.7% and 48.1% of patients, respectively. The prevalence of food addiction decreased significantly up to M6, but increased to 29.3% at M12. The prevalence of binge eating decreased significantly through the follow-up up to 17.4% at M12. Those who met criteria for food addiction at M12 achieved significantly lower excess weight loss at M12 compared with those not meeting this criterion (P = 0.005). Food addiction scores at M12 negatively correlated with weekly physical activity (r = - 0.559; P < 0.001) and food tolerance scores (r = - 0.428; P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The reduction in food addiction observed at M6 was not maintained at M12. Food addiction at M12 was associated with poorer weight loss, eating, and lifestyle behaviors. Clinical practice should focus on the psychological aspects associated with obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disparities in obesity care and bariatric surgery persist among patients of diverse identities. However, little is known about sexual minority (SM) bariatric patients. OBJECTIVES This study sought to describe, in a preliminary fashion, sexual orientation variables of outness, self-esteem, and perceived discrimination among a sample of SM patients pursuing bariatric surgery. The study also sought to compare SM and heterosexual bariatric candidates on measures of eating behaviors, anxiety, and depression. SETTING Academic medical center in the United States. METHODS Data were collected as part of a standard psychological evaluation for surgical clearance between May 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019. Data included demographic characteristics, sexual orientation variables, eating behaviors, anxiety, and depression. Descriptive statistics were included to present findings among SM patients. One-way analyses of covariance were conducted to assess differences between SM and heterosexual patients. RESULTS A total of 633 patients were evaluated (38 SM and 595 heterosexual). SM patients had high outness scores with high self-esteem and minimal perceived discrimination. SM patients endorsed lower cognitive restraint, higher disinhibition, and increased hunger compared with heterosexual patients (P < .05). SM patients also reported significantly more symptoms of anxiety and depression compared with heterosexual patients (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Findings provide preliminary evidence toward the importance of assessing for sexual orientation among bariatric patients. Future research is warranted to assess the unique role of sexual orientation, as well as explore causal links between sexual orientation, eating behaviors, and mental health among bariatric patients pre- and post surgery.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the relationship between symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), symptoms of binge eating disorder, and body mass index (BMI) among students at a southern university. Participants: Two hundred seventy-seven college students. Methods: Between January 31, 2013 and March 27, 2013, participants completed the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) Screener and the Binge Eating Scale (BES) in addition to permitting researchers to measure their height and weight. Results: Higher ASRS scores, higher BMIs, and lower BES scores were observed among men. Among both men and women, BES scores were positively correlated with BMI and ASRS scores; however, the correlation between ASRS and BMI was not significant. Conclusion: Binge eating disorder symptomatology was associated with increased ADHD symptomatology and a higher BMI among both men and women. Among students presenting with obesity or ADHD, screening for binge eating may assist with the identification of problematic eating behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals seeking bariatric surgery evidence risk for binge and disordered eating behaviors, which can lead to poorer post-surgical weight loss outcomes. Use of avoidant coping strategies to manage stress, along with symptoms of depression, are associated with disordered eating in the general population. However, the role of coping has not been examined among candidates for bariatric surgery, and coping and depression have rarely been considered in combination. Given the emerging standard that psychologists are involved in evaluations and treatment before and after surgery, consideration of these variables is clinically relevant. METHODS Participants were 399 patients undergoing pre-surgical bariatric psychological assessment. Hierarchical linear regression analyses tested whether gender, age, and BMI; approach and avoidance coping; and depression and anxiety were associated with disordered eating (binge eating, restraint, eating concerns, shape concerns, weight concerns) in a cross-sectional study design. RESULTS In initial steps of the model controlling demographic variables, approach coping predicted less and avoidance coping predicted more disordered eating across most outcomes examined. In models including depression and anxiety, avoidance (but not approach) coping remained a relevant predictor. The effects of depression were also quite robust, such that participants who were more depressed reported more disordered eating. More anxious participants reported more restrained eating. CONCLUSIONS Avoidance coping and depressive symptoms emerged as key variables in understanding recent disordered eating among patients considering bariatric surgery. Pre-surgical psychological evaluations and treatment approaches could be enhanced with consideration of patient coping strategies, particularly avoidant coping responses to stress, independent of psychological distress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS To compare groups of bariatric patients with preoperative scores of Binge Eating Scale (BES) above and below the clinical cut off value on weight outcomes up to 60 months following surgery. METHODS This is a prospective observational study involving 108 Brazilian patients (follow-up rate: 48.1%) operated by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In the preoperative period, they were clinically evaluated, and BES was applied. Based on the scores, patients were categorized as high or low according to established cut off 17 for binge eaters. Follow-up weight loss was obtained (3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months) using data from medical records. The percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) was examined by generalized linear model. RESULTS 41.7% of patients had BES scores higher than 17 at baseline. Weight loss was significant up to 12 months. The greatest weight loss was at 24 months of follow-up, ranging from 2.7 to 110.4 kg (mean 42.9 ± 17.8 kg). In the short postoperative period (3, 24, and 36 months), %TWL was significantly different between groups. At 24 months, patients with higher scores lost more %TWL than those with lower scores (35.1 ± 0.8% vs 31.6 ± 0.7%, p = 0.029). However, this difference was not fount at 60 months postoperatively (mean 28.9 ± 9.6%). In a multivariate analysis, the presence of depression, age, and BES score were not associated with %TWL at 24 and 60 months. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that preoperative BES scores point to a similar weight loss after bariatric surgery. Further studies with long-term follow-up are necessary to evaluate this finding.

Abstract
Obesity is a leading global epidemic. Bariatric surgery is the only treatment demonstrating substantial long-term weight loss and medical benefits. However, there is limited research on the psychological outcomes following surgery. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to systematically review depression, anxiety, and binge eating outcomes at different time points following bariatric surgery and identify whether bariatric surgery significantly reduces psychological symptoms over time. These outcomes were also examined among endoscopic bariatric procedures as a secondary aim. Forty-eight studies met inclusion criteria. Findings suggested that most patients experience a short-term reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms from pre-surgery. Over time, however, these symptoms increase and may even return to pre-surgery levels. Furthermore, while binge eating was uncommon after surgery, other disordered eating patterns may emerge. Binge eating may also restart over time as the stomach enlarges again. Overall, the complex psychological difficulties faced by individuals with obesity continue after surgery and may contribute to longer-term weight recidivism. More comprehensive and standardised psychological assessment procedures, including clinical interviews and longer-term follow-up, may provide insight into the psychological mechanisms maintaining weight management issues, and may serve as a starting point for improving the long-term success of patients with obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obese patients (Ob) with a binge eating disorders (BED) behavior pattern have a higher prevalence of postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) compared to Ob without a BED behavior pattern, while an increase of PDS has been described in Ob after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Hedonic response to a meal is dissociable from satiation in healthy subjects. Anhedonia is the lowered ability to experience pleasure. There are no studies investigating the presence of anhedonia in Ob with and without SG and its relationship to PDS symptoms.
AIM To assess the relationship among anhedonia, BED and upper gastrointestinal symptoms in two group of morbidly Ob with and without SG.
METHODS Eighty-one Ob without SG, 45 Ob with SG and 55 healthy controls (HC) were studied. All subjects fulfilled the binge eating scale (BES) to investigate BED, the validated 14 items Snaith-Hamilton pleasure scale (SHAPS) to assess Anhedonia as well as the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI II) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaires to screen for depression and anxiety. All patients underwent a standardized questionnaire investigating the intensity-frequency scores (0-6) of upper gastrointestinal symptoms and were diagnosed for the presence of functional dyspepsia (FD) and its subtypes according to ROME IV criteria.
RESULTS Ob without SG who were positive for BED had a 4.7 higher risk of FD compared to Ob without SG who were negative for BED (OR: 4.7; 95.0%CI 1.23-18.24; P = 0.02). STAI-Y2 scores were significantly higher in Ob without SG positive for BED (42.2 ± 1.5 vs Ob negative for BED: 39.6 ± 1 .0, P = 0.04), while SHAPS scores and BDI II did not differ in the two groups (1.16 ± 1.30 vs 0.89 ± 1.02, P = 0.49). A lower prevalence of BED (BES > 17: 11.4% vs 40.7%, P = 0.001) and BDI-II (6.8 ± 1.2 vs 13.8 ± 1.9, P = 0.005) was reported in Ob with SG than Ob without SG, on the contrary total mean scores of STAI-Y1 and STAI-Y2 were significantly higher in Ob with SG than Ob without SG. Thirty-five percent of Ob with SG fulfilled the diagnosis of FD. SHAPS mean scores and the prevalence of anhedonia did not differ among the two groups (18.2 vs 8.1%, P = 0.2). Fifty-four percent of Ob with SG achieved surgical success excess weight loss > 50%. Excess weight loss was negatively related to SHAPS total mean scores [adjusted B: -7. 099 (95%CI: -13.91 to -0.29), P = 0.04].
CONCLUSION Ob without SG showed a higher prevalence of PDS, mood disorders and anxiety when positive for BE behavior compared to those negative for BE behavior, whereas no differences were found in SHAPS score. Ob with SG showed a higher prevalence of PDS compared to Ob without SG. Concerning psychological aspect, BED and depression are less frequent in the Ob with SG, while both state and trait anxiety are significantly higher. Moreover, the more an Ob with SG is anhedonic, less surgical success was achieved.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) can improve glycaemic control or even achieve remission through weight loss and reduce their use of medication and risk of cardiovascular disease. The Glucose Lowering through Weight management (GLoW) trial will evaluate whether a tailored diabetes education and behavioural weight management programme (DEW) is more effective and cost-effective than a diabetes education (DE) programme in helping people with overweight or obesity and a recent diagnosis of T2D to lower their blood glucose, lose weight and improve other markers of cardiovascular risk. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This study is a pragmatic, randomised, single-blind, parallel group, two-arm, superiority trial. We will recruit 576 adults with body mass index>25 kg/m2 and diagnosis of T2D in the past 3 years and randomise them to a tailored DEW or a DE programme. Participants will attend measurement appointments at a local general practitioner practice or research centre at baseline, 6 and 12 months. The primary outcome is 12-month change in glycated haemoglobin. The effect of the intervention on the primary outcome will be estimated and tested using a linear regression model (analysis of covariance) including randomisation group and adjusted for baseline value of the outcome and the randomisation stratifiers. Participants will be included in the group to which they were randomised, under the intention-to-treat principle. Secondary outcomes include 6-month and 12-month changes in body weight, body fat percentage, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and lipid profile; probability of achieving good glycaemic control; probability of achieving remission from diabetes; probability of losing 5% and 10% body weight and modelled cardiovascular risk (UKPDS). An intention-to-treat within-trial cost-effectiveness analysis will be conducted from NHS and societal perspectives using participant-level data. Qualitative interviews will be conducted with participants to understand why and how the programme achieved its results and how participants manage their weight after the programme ends. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval was received from East of Scotland Research Ethics Service on 15 May 2018 (18/ES/0048). This protocol (V.3) was approved on 19 June 2019. Findings will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and communicated to other stakeholders as appropriate. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ISRCTN18399564.

Abstract
AIM The study was aimed at studying binge eating behavior in urban adolescents. This was in keeping with the increasing prevalence of obesity and lifestyle disorders amongst Indian population especially in adolescent groups. METHODS 2000 adolescents English speaking schools in Mumbai were administered the Binge Eating Scale and the Eating Behaviors and Pattern Questionnaire after assent and parental consent. The prevalence of Binge eating behavior was estimated along with the socio-demographic data and other data from scale which was analyzed using the Chi square test and ANOVA where appropriate. RESULTS The mean age of the total sample was 15.05 ± 1.65 years. Females reported higher Binge eating behavior than males and majority of the sample belonging to upper and lower middle- class families reported high binge eating behavior. The prevalence of Binge eating behavior was high with 1002 (50.1 %) adolescents reporting moderate binge eating while 736 (36.8 %) reporting severe binge eating. Significantly greater adolescents in the binge eating group reported irregular menses and being overweight and obese. There was a significantly greater proportion of adolescents in the binge eating group that ate out weekly and ate more fried food. CONCLUSION There is an increasing trend of obesity and lifestyle disorders in adolescent population that can be linked to Binge eating behavior however, the role of binge eating in context of one of the potential cause of lifestyle disorders and obesity has not been studied in Indian adolescents despite the prevalence of Binge eating and overweight being high in this population, we need further larger studies to corroborate the findings of this study.

Abstract
A general personality and psychopathology evaluation is considered to be crucial part of the multidisciplinary assessment for weight-related problems. The Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) is commonly used to assess general psychopathology in both overweight and obese patients seeking weight-loss treatment. The main purpose of the present research was to investigate the psychometric properties of the brief form of the SCL-90-R (i.e., the SCL-K-9) in a clinical sample (N = 397) of patients seeking weight-loss treatment (i.e., bariatric surgery and a nutritional weight-loss program). The results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported a one-factor solution of the SCL-K-9, with all nine items loading significantly on the common latent factor (lambdas ≥ 0.587). The ordinal α (= 0.91), the inter-item mean indices of correlation (rii = 0.53), and the convergent validity were also satisfactory. A receiver operating characteristic curves procedure showed that both SCL-90-R and SCL-K-9 were able to classify patients with and without significant binge eating pathology according to the Binge Eating Scale (BES) total score. Overall, our results suggest that the SCL-K-9 has adequate psychometric properties and can be applied as a short screening tool to assess general psychopathology in overweight/obese individuals seeking weight-loss treatment and at follow-up interviews when time restraints preclude the use of the full-length form.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of disordered eating behaviors including binge eating disorder (BED). Comorbid BED in patients with T2DM has been associated with adverse clinical outcomes such as higher body mass index (BMI) and depressive symptoms. Identifying and addressing this disorder in patients with T2DM is a significant challenge for health-care providers. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss current perspectives on BED in the context of T2DM with implications for screening and management of these highly comorbid conditions. BED continues to be underrecognized and underdiagnosed. However, there are established tools that providers can use to screen for BED such as the SCOFF Questionnaire and Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns-5. There are several effective treatments for BED including cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and lisdexamfetamine dimesylate. However, few studies have examined the effects of these treatments in patients with co-morbid T2DM and BED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression and binge eating disorder (BED) are prevalent among bariatric surgery candidates. Depression subtypes may be differentially related to obesity, such that the atypical subtype predicts poorer outcomes. However, no research has examined depression subtypes, BED, and weight loss in bariatric candidates. OBJECTIVE To examine whether presurgical atypical depressive symptoms, compared with no depressive and melancholic depressive symptoms, were associated with higher rates of presurgical BED, binge eating severity, and poorer postsurgical weight loss trajectories among bariatric candidates. SETTING An outpatient Midwest bariatric clinic. METHODS Participants were 345 adults (aged 46.27 ± 12.78 yr, 76% female; body mass index = 49.84 ± 8.51 kg/m2) who received a presurgical evaluation. Depression subtypes (melancholic, atypical, and no depressive symptoms) were categorized using the Beck Depression Inventory-II. BED diagnosis and severity were evaluated using the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale and Binge Eating Scale, respectively. Weight loss trajectories were calculated as percent total weight loss postsurgery. RESULTS Using no depression as the referent, participants reporting melancholic symptoms (odds ratio = 7.60, P < .001 confidence interval95 [2.59-22.28]) and atypical symptoms (odds ratio = 10.11, P < .01 confidence interval95 [2.69-37.94]) were more likely to meet criteria for BED. Patients with atypical depressive symptoms exhibited the highest binge eating severity scores (mean = 23.03). Depression subtypes did not predict percent total weight loss trajectories within 18-months postbariatric surgery. CONCLUSIONS Patients reporting preoperative atypical depressive symptoms were more likely to meet criteria for co-morbid BED diagnosis and have greater binge eating severity but did not have poorer weight loss within 18 months postsurgery. Future studies with longer-term follow-up and corresponding measures of postsurgical depression and binge eating pathology are warranted.

Abstract
Extreme obesity (EO) (BMI >50 kg/m2) is frequently associated with neuropsychiatric disease (NPD). As both EO and NPD are heritable central nervous system disorders, we assessed the prevalence of protein-truncating variants (PTVs) and copy number variants (CNVs) in genes/regions previously implicated in NPD in adults with EO (n = 149) referred for weight loss/bariatric surgery. We also assessed the prevalence of CNVs in patients referred to University College London Hospital (UCLH) with EO (n = 218) and obesity (O) (BMI 35-50 kg/m2; n = 374) and a Swedish cohort of participants from the community with predominantly O (n = 161). The prevalence of variants was compared with control subjects in the Exome Aggregation Consortium/Genome Aggregation Database. In the discovery cohort (high NPD prevalence: 77%), the cumulative PTV/CNV allele frequency (AF) was 7.7% vs. 2.6% in control subjects (odds ratio [OR] 3.1 [95% CI 2-4.1]; P < 0.0001). In the UCLH EO cohort (intermediate NPD prevalence: 47%), CNV AF (1.8% vs. 0.9% in control subjects; OR 1.95 [95% CI 0.96-3.93]; P = 0.06) was lower than the discovery cohort. CNV AF was not increased in the UCLH O cohort (0.8%). No CNVs were identified in the Swedish cohort with no NPD. These findings suggest that PTV/CNVs, in genes/regions previously associated with NPD, may contribute to NPD in patients with EO.
