Modeling Fe(II) Complexes Using Neural Networks

We report a Fe(II) data set of more than 23000 conformers in both low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states. This data set was generated to develop a neural network model that is capable of predicting the energy and the energy splitting as a function of the conformation of a Fe(II) organometallic complex. In order to achieve this, we propose a type of scaled electronic embedding to cover the long-range interactions implicitly in our neural network describing the Fe(II) organometallic complexes. For the total energy prediction, the lowest MAE is 0.037 eV, while the lowest MAE of the splitting energy is 0.030 eV. Compared to baseline models, which only incorporate short-range interactions, our scaled electronic embeddings improve the accuracy by over 70% for the prediction of the total energy and the splitting energy. With regard to semiempirical methods, our proposed models reduce the MAE, with respect to these methods, by 2 orders of magnitude.

Stimuli-responsive magnetic materials: impact of spin and electronic modulation

Addressing molecular bistability as a function of external stimuli, especially in spin-crossover (SCO) and metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET) systems, has seen a surge of interest in the field of molecule-based magnetic materials due to their enormous potential in various technological applications such as molecular spintronics, memory and electronic devices, switches, sensors, and many more. The fine-tuning of molecular components allow the design and synthesis of materials with tailored properties for these vast applications. In this Feature Article, we discuss a part of our research work into this broad topic, pertaining to the recent discoveries in the field of switchable molecular magnetic materials based on SCO and MMET systems, along with some historical background of the area and related accomplishments made in recent years.

Impact of counter anions on spin-state switching of manganese(III) complexes containing an azobenzene ligand

Four mononuclear manganese(III) complexes coordinated with photo-active hexadentate azobenzene ligands, [Mn(5azo-sal₂-323)](X) (X = Cl, 1; X = BF₄, 2; X = ClO₄, 3; X = PF₆, 4), were prepared. The impact of various counter anions on the stabilization and switching of the spin state of the manganese(III) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical studies, along with theoretical calculations. All four complexes consisted of an isostructural monocationic distorted octahedral MnN₄O₂ coordination environment offered by the hexadentate ligand and Cl^-, BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, and PF₆^- as counter anions respectively. Complex 1 with a spherical Cl^- counter anion showed a reversible and gradual spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1) and high-spin (HS) (S = 2) states above 400 K, where non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the LS state. While, irrespective of the shape of the counter anion, complexes 2-4 remained in the HS state throughout the measured temperature range of 300-2 K, where strong π-π interaction between the azobenzene motifs among cationic units played a substantial role in stabilizing the HS state. Furthermore, magnetic data analyses revealed significantly large zero-field splitting in the S = 1 state for 1 (D = 19.4 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008) in comparison with that in the S = 2 state for 2-4 (D = 3.99-4.97 cm^-1, E/D = 0.002-0.195). Spectroelectrochemical investigations revealed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(III) center to manganese(II) and manganese(IV), respectively. A detailed theoretical calculation at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory was carried out to better understand the magneto-structural correlation.

Vapor-triggered reversible crystal transformation of a nickel-based magnetic molecular switch

Vapor-triggered crystal-to-crystal transformation between a discrete trinuclear complex [Ni₃(sih)₂(py)₈] and a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer [Ni₃(sih)₂(py)₂]_n·2DMF·2H₂O was demonstrated. It provides an example of a solid-state coordination-induced spin state switch behavior attributed to the structural phase transition triggered by solvent signal. The reversible nature can be detected by both optical (spectral) and magnetic responses in cycles.

Thermodriven, Acidity-Driven, and Photodriven Spin-State Switching in Pyridylacylhydrazoneiron(II) Complexes at or above Room Temperature

The magnetic bistability of spin-crossover (SCO) materials is highly appealing for applications as molecular switches and information storage. However, switching of the spin state around room temperature remains challenging. In this work, we reported the successful manipulation of the spin states of two iron(II) complexes (1-Fe and 2-Fe) based on pyridylacylhydrazone ligands in manifold ways. Both complexes are stabilized in the low-spin (LS) state at room temperature because of the strong ligand-field strength imposed by the ligands. 2-Fe shows thermoinduced SCO above room temperature with a very large and reproducible hysteresis (>50 K), while 1-Fe remains in the LS state up to 400 K. Acidity-driven spin-state switching of the two complexes was achieved at room temperature as a result of the complex dissociation and release of iron(II) in its high-spin (HS) state. Recovery of the complex is feasible upon further alkalization treatment in the case of 1-Fe, allowing bidirectional modulation of the spin state of the metal center. Light-driven one-way switching from LS to HS is also achieved by virtue of E-to-Z isomerization at the C═N double bond, which results in dissociation of the complex because of the poor binding affinity in the Z configuration.

Guest-Driven Light-Induced Spin Change in an Azobenzene Loaded Metal-Organic Framework

Stimuli-responsive materials that can be reversibly switched by light are of immense interest. Among them, photo-responsive spin crossover (SCO) complexes have great promises to combine the photoactive inputs with multifaceted outputs into switchable materials and devices. However, the reversible control the spin-state change by photochromic guests is still challenging. Herein, we report an unprecedented guest-driven light-induced spin change (GD-LISC) in a Hofmann-type metal-organic framework (MOF), [Fe(bpn){Ag(CN)₂ }₂ ]⋅azobenzene. (1, bpn=1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)naphthalene). The reversible trans-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene guest upon UV/Vis irradiation in the solid-state results in the remarkable magnetic changes in a wide temperature range of 10-180 K. This finding not only establishes a new switching mechanism for SCO complexes, but also paves the way toward the development of new generation of photo-responsive magnetic materials.

Spin crossover metal-organic frameworks with inserted photoactive guests: on the quest to control the spin state by photoisomerization

Three Hofmann-like metal-organic frameworks {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN)4]}·G (bpac = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene) were synthesized with photoisomerizable guest molecules (G = trans-azobenzene, trans-stilbene or cis-stilbene) and were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry and powder X-ray diffraction. The insertion of guest molecules and their conformation were inferred from Raman and FTIR spectra and from single-crystal X-ray diffraction and confronted with computational simulation. The magnetic and photomagnetic behaviors of the framework are significantly altered by the different guest molecules and different conformations. On the other hand, photoisomerization of the guest molecules becomes strongly hindered by the framework.

Single molecule magnet behaviour in a square planar S = 1/2 Co(ii) complex and spin-state assignment of multiple relaxation modes

We report the first example of field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour in a square-planar S = 1/2 Co(ii) pincer complex [(PNNNP)CoBr]Br (2). The related five-coordinate complexes [(PCNCP)CoBr2] (1) and [(PONOP)CoBr2] (3) also exhibit SMM properties. Partial spin crossover displayed by 3 allows for assignment of distinct relaxation modes to each spin state.

Photoinduced Mo-CN Bond Breakage in Octacyanomolybdate Leading to Spin Triplet Trapping

The photoinduced properties of the octacoordinated complex K₄ Mo^IV (CN)₈ ⋅2 H₂ O were studied by theoretical calculations, crystallography, and optical and magnetic measurements. The crystal structure recorded at 10 K after blue light irradiation reveals an heptacoordinated Mo(CN)₇ species originating from the light-induced cleavage of one Mo-CN bond, concomitant with the photoinduced formation of a paramagnetic signal. When this complex is heated to 70 K, it returns to its original diamagnetic ground state, demonstrating full reversibility. The photomagnetic properties show a partial conversion into a triplet state possessing significant magnetic anisotropy, which is in agreement with theoretical studies. Inspired by these results, we isolated the new compound [K(crypt-222)]₃ [Mo^IV (CN)₇ ]⋅3 CH₃ CN using a photochemical pathway, confirming that photodissociation leads to a stable heptacyanomolybdate(IV) species in solution.

Site-Selective Photoswitching of Two Distinct Magnetic Chromophores in a Propeller-Like Molecule To Achieve Four Different Magnetic States

Magnetic photoswitching is a highly important but relatively rare phenomenon for enabling optical writing/reading of the magnetic state of a molecule. In this work, an unprecedented site-selective double photoswitching is reported from the assembly of two different "photomagnetic chromophores" into a single hexanuclear molecule: namely, a spin-crossover Fe(II) center exhibiting light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) and a photochemically active octacyanometalate(IV) unit. Four different magnetization levels are accessible through the appropriate combination of violet/red light and temperature, results that highlight the potential of photomagnetic molecules as future molecular memory cells.

Ultrafast Photodynamics of an Azopyridine-Functionalized Iron(II) Complex: Implications for the Concept of Ligand-Driven Light-Induced Spin Change

We report on the ultrafast photodynamics of an iron(II) complex with a photoisomerizable pentadentate azo-tetrapyridylamino ligand after irradiation with ultraviolet light. The results of femtosecond transient electronic absorption spectroscopy performed on the low-spin (LS) form of the title complex show that initial excitation of the ππ* state of the azopyridine unit in the ligand at λ_pump = 312 nm is followed by an ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) that leads to the formation of a metal-centered (MC) ⁵T state, in competition with the intended photoswitching of the azopyridine unit. Additional measurements carried out upon excitation of the singlet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (¹MLCT) transition at λ_pump = 455 nm suggest that this energy transfer occurs via an MLCT state. The resulting high-spin (HS) ⁵T state of the complex is metastable and recovers to the LS ground state with a time constant of ∼3 ns. The implications of these observations on the ligand-driven light-induced spin change concept are discussed.

Spin-crossover modulation via single-crystal to single-crystal photochemical [2 + 2] reaction in Hofmann-type frameworks

This study reports the first modulation of spin-crossover (SCO) behavior via a photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. Here we construct two no-solvent Fe(ii)-Ag(i) bimetallic Hofmann-type frameworks, [Fe(4-spy)2{Ag(CN)2}2] (1) and [Fe(2,4-bpe)2{Ag(CN)2}2] (2) (4-spy = 4-styrylpyridine, 2,4-bpe = trans-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene). For 1, the dimerization of 4-spy results in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformation from 2D interdigitated layers to a 3D interpenetrated structure. Additionally, a 3D → 3D structural transformation accompanied with Ag(i)-N bond breaking is achieved via the photochemical cycloaddition reaction of 2,4-bpe in 2. More importantly, both the spin transition temperatures and the SCO character are effectively modulated; thus, this approach provides a new strategy for constructing photo-responsive SCO magnetic materials.

Transport property of ligand-driven light-induced spin-change Fe-based spin crossover complexes

The Fe-based spin-crossover (SCO) complexes, especially the ligand-driven light-induced spin-change (LD-LISC) systems with high spin-transition temperature, are considered as the most promising building blocks for designing molecular spintronic devices due to their bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. Here, we explore the transport properties of Fe(stpy)₄(NCS)₂ LD-LISC SCO complexes with the trans and cis configurations sandwiched between Au electrodes by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function method. As for the trans configuration, the current through the molecular junction with the HS state is significantly larger than that of the LS state, which indicates that this Fe-based LD-LISC SCO complex with the trans configuration could act as a molecular switch when the spin transition is triggered by external stimuli. Remarkably, we observe the nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and obvious negative differential resistance feature in the Fe(stpy)₄(NCX)₂ junctions with the trans and cis configurations, which is attributed by the dramatically different electronic structures of two spin channels and the bias-dependent transmission spectra, respectively. These obtained theoretical findings suggest that the examined Fe-based LD-LISC SCO complexes hold great potential in molecular spintronics.

The transport properties of LD-LISC Fe-based SCO complexes with the trans and cis configuration exhibit robust spin-filtering and NDR features, which highlight them for promising applications in molecular devices.

Hysteretic spin crossover in isomeric iron(ii) complexes

Two mononuclear iron(ii) complexes with isomeric N,N,N-tridentate pyrimidine-based ligands were synthesized. Both complexes show reproducible hysteretic spin crossover. Low spin state to high spin state switching is cooperative due to autocatalysis.
