Hepatic and Pancreatic Cellular Response to Early Life Nutritional Mismatch

To determine the basis for perinatal nutritional mismatch causing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and diabetes mellitus, we examined adult phenotype, hepatic transcriptome, and pancreatic β-islet function. In prenatal caloric-restricted rats with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and postnatal exposure to high fat with fructose (HFhf) or high carbohydrate, we investigated male and female IUGR-HFhf and IUGR-high carbohydrate, vs HFhf and control offspring. Males more than females displayed adiposity, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and hepatomegaly with hepatic steatosis. Male hepatic triglyceride synthesis, de novo lipogenesis genes increased, while female lipolysis, β-oxidation, fatty acid efflux, and FGF21 genes increased. IUGR-HFhf males demonstrated reduced β-islet insulin and humanin, and type 1 diabetes mellitus human amniotic fluid increased humanin. Humanin suppression disabled glucose stimulated insulin, ATP production, with apoptotic diminished β-islet viability. Humanin and FGF21 may reverse perinatal nutritional mismatched phenotype by restoring functional β islets and preventing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and diabetes mellitus.

Understanding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Risk Parameters through Intermittent Fasting: A Machine Learning Approach

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. Despite the availability of pharmacological treatments, dietary plans, and exercise regimens, T2DM remains a significant global cause of mortality. As a result, there is an increasing interest in exploring lifestyle interventions, such as intermittent fasting (IF). This study aims to identify underlying patterns and principles for effectively improving T2DM risk parameters through IF. By analyzing data from multiple randomized clinical trials investigating various IF interventions in humans, a machine learning algorithm was employed to develop a personalized recommendation system. This system offers guidance tailored to pre-diabetic and diabetic individuals, suggesting the most suitable IF interventions to improve T2DM risk parameters. With a success rate of 95%, this recommendation system provides highly individualized advice, optimizing the benefits of IF for diverse population subgroups. The outcomes of this study lead us to conclude that weight is a crucial feature for females, while age plays a determining role for males in reducing glucose levels in blood. By revealing patterns in diabetes risk parameters among individuals, this study not only offers practical guidance but also sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of T2DM, contributing to a deeper understanding of this complex metabolic disorder.

An Update on the Molecular and Cellular Basis of Pharmacotherapy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic illness with an increasing global prevalence. More than 537 million cases of diabetes were reported worldwide in 2021, and the number is steadily increasing. The worldwide number of people suffering from DM is projected to reach 783 million in 2045. In 2021 alone, more than USD 966 billion was spent on the management of DM. Reduced physical activity due to urbanization is believed to be the major cause of the increase in the incidence of the disease, as it is associated with higher rates of obesity. Diabetes poses a risk for chronic complications such as nephropathy, angiopathy, neuropathy and retinopathy. Hence, the successful management of blood glucose is the cornerstone of DM therapy. The effective management of the hyperglycemia associated with type 2 diabetes includes physical exercise, diet and therapeutic interventions (insulin, biguanides, second generation sulfonylureas, glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, amylin mimetics, meglitinides, α-glucosidase inhibitors, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and bile acid sequestrants). The optimal and timely treatment of DM improves the quality of life and reduces the severe burden of the disease for patients. Genetic testing, examining the roles of different genes involved in the pathogenesis of DM, may also help to achieve optimal DM management in the future by reducing the incidence of DM and by enhancing the use of individualized treatment regimens.

Obesity in Prader-Willi syndrome: physiopathological mechanisms, nutritional and pharmacological approaches

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder caused by the lack of expression of genes on the paternally inherited chromosome 15q11.2-q13 region. The three main genetic subtypes are represented by paternal 15q11-q13 deletion, maternal uniparental disomy 15, and imprinting defect. Clinical picture of PWS changes across life stages. The main clinical characteristics are represented by short stature, developmental delay, cognitive disability and behavioral diseases. Hypotonia and poor suck resulting in failure to thrive are typical of infancy. As the subjects with PWS age, clinical manifestations such as hyperphagia, temperature instability, high pain threshold, hypersomnia and multiple endocrine abnormalities including growth hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone deficiencies, hypogonadism and central adrenal insufficiency due to hypothalamic dysfunction occur. Obesity and its complications are the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in PWS. Several mechanisms for the aetiology of obesity in PWS have been hypothesized, which include aberration in hypothalamic pathways of satiety control resulting in hyperphagia, disruption in hormones regulating appetite and satiety and reduced energy expenditure. However, despite the advancement in the research field of the genetic basis of obesity in PWS, there are contradictory data on the management. Although it is mandatory to adopt obesity strategy prevention from infancy, there is promising evidence regarding the management of obesity in adulthood with current obesity drugs along with lifestyle interventions, although the data are limited. Therefore, the current manuscript provides a review of the current evidence on obesity and PWS, covering physiopathological aspects, obesity-related complications and conservative management.

Chemical Composition, Antioxidant, and α-Glucosidase-Inhibiting Activity of Aqueous and Hydroethanolic Extracts of Traditional Antidiabetics from Croatian Ethnomedicine

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic disease with a growing prevalence worldwide. In addition to the conventional therapy, many T2D patients use phytotherapeutic preparations. In the present study, chemical composition, antioxidant, and α-glucosidase inhibiting activity of traditional antidiabetics from Croatian ethnomedicine (Achillea millefolium, Artemisia absinthium, Centaurium erythraea, Morusalba, Phaseolus vulgaris, Sambucus nigra, and Salvia officinalis) were assessed. The efficacy of water and 80% ethanol as extraction solvents for bioactive constituents was compared. HPLC analysis revealed that the prepared extracts were rich in phenols, especially rutin, ferulic, and chlorogenic acid. Antiradical (against DPPH and ABTS radicals), reducing (towards Mo6+ and Fe3+ ions), and enzyme inhibiting properties were in linear correlation with the content of phenolic constituents. Ethanolic extracts, richer in phenolic substances, showed dominant efficacy in those assays. Aqueous extracts, on the other hand, were better Fe2+ ion chelators and more active in the β-carotene linoleic acid assay. Extracts from S. officinalis and A. millefolium were particularly active antioxidants and α-glucosidase inhibitors. A. absinthium, another potent α-glucosidase inhibitor, contained chromium, a mineral that promotes insulin action. The investigated plants contained significant amounts of minerals useful in management of T2D, with negligible amounts of heavy metals deeming them safe for human use.

Role of microRNA-122 in hepatic lipid metabolism of the weanling female rat offspring exposed to prenatal and postnatal caloric restriction

We examined the role of hepatocyte micro-RNA-122 and hypothalamic neuropeptides, in weanling (21d) female rats exposed to calorie restriction induced growth restriction either prenatally (IUGR), postnatally (PNGR) or both (IPGR) vs. ad lib fed controls (CON). IUGR were hyperinsulinemic, hyperleptinemic and dyslipidemic with high circulating miR-122. Profiling of cardio-metabolic risk factors and medication utilisation among Type II diabetes patients in Ghana: a prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is complicated by multiple cardio-metabolic risk factors. Controlling these factors requires lifestyle modifications alongside utilisation of anti-diabetic medications. Different glucose lowering [(biguanides (BIGs), sulfonylureas (SUAs), thiazolidinediones (TNZ)], lipid lowering (statins), and anti-hypertensive medicines [angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), calcium channel blockers (CCBs), angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and central acting drugs (CADs)] have been approved for controlling hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia and hypertension respectively. Here, we examined factors that characterise T2DM and explored the response to medication therapy among T2DM patients.

METHODS

This prospective cohort study recruited 241 T2DM patients reporting at a clinic in Ghana, from January through to August, 2016. Each patient's demographic, medications and anthropometric data was obtained while information on medication adherence was captured using Morisky adherence scale-8 (MMAS-8). Fasting blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis.

RESULTS

The mean age of participants was 57.82 years for baseline and six-month follow-up. Physical activity differed at baseline and follow up (p < 0.05) but not body mass index (BMI). BIG alone, or in combination with SUA and TNZ did not improve glycaemic status at follow up (p > 0.05). Many participants using either ACEI or ARB were able to control their blood pressures. Among dyslipidaemia patients under statin treatment, there was an improved lipid profile at follow-up.

CONCLUSIONS

Statin medications are effective for reducing dyslipidaemia in T2DM patients. However, control of modifiable risk factors, particularly blood glucose and to a lesser degree blood pressure is suboptimal. Addressing these will require concomitant interventions including education on medication adherence and correct dietary plans, lifestyle modifications and physical activity.

Lifestyle recommendations for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome: an international panel recommendation

The importance of metabolic syndrome (MetS) lies in its associated risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as other harmful conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In this report, the available scientific evidence on the associations between lifestyle changes and MetS and its components is reviewed to derive recommendations for MetS prevention and management. Weight loss through an energy-restricted diet together with increased energy expenditure through physical activity contribute to the prevention and treatment of MetS. A Mediterranean-type diet, with or without energy restriction, is an effective treatment component. This dietary pattern should be built upon an increased intake of unsaturated fat, primarily from olive oil, and emphasize the consumption of legumes, cereals (whole grains), fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, and low-fat dairy products, as well as moderate consumption of alcohol. Other dietary patterns (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, new Nordic, and vegetarian diets) have also been proposed as alternatives for preventing MetS. Quitting smoking and reducing intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and meat and meat products are mandatory. Nevertheless, there are inconsistencies and gaps in the evidence, and additional research is needed to define the most appropriate therapies for MetS. In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is critical to prevent or delay the onset of MetS in susceptible individuals and to prevent cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in those with existing MetS. The recommendations provided in this article should help patients and clinicians understand and implement the most effective approaches for lifestyle change to prevent MetS and improve cardiometabolic health.

A systematic review on the association of serum selenium and metabolic syndrome

BACKGROUND

This systematic review paper aims to study the experimental and human studies on the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS), its component and selenium (Se) concentration.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The literature was searched in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases with no time limitation using MetS X and Se key words in medical subject heading. The related papers were selected in three phases. After quality assessment, two reviewers extracted the data, whereas the third reviewer checked their extracted data. All evidence comes from experimental and laboratory studies.

RESULTS

Finally, 18 articles were included. While, some studies documented that as an antioxidant agent, Se might be correlated with endothelial function, large controversy exists about the type of correlation including positive, negative, and no correlation between MetS and Se levels in body. Some of the reviewed studies were focused on antioxidant supplementation effects on MetS, results also varied in this regard.

CONCLUSION

This inconsistency could be because of diversity in study design, population, lack of special focus on Se and MetS, and finally the complex nature of MetS.

In adult patients with type 1 diabetes healthy lifestyle associates with a better cardiometabolic profile

BACKGROUND/AIMS

Little is known about lifestyle habits of adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their association with cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors. The aims of the present study were to determine the prevalence of adults with T1D who adopted a healthy lifestyle and to explore the association between a healthy lifestyle and the cardiometabolic profile.

METHODS AND RESULTS

This is a cross-sectional analysis of 115 adults with T1D. Participants wore a motion sensor and completed a 3-day food record. The following CMR factors were assessed: body mass index, waist circumference, body composition (iDXA), glycated hemoglobin, lipids and blood pressure. Insulin resistance was estimated (estimated glucose disposal rate). Participants were classified according to the number of healthy lifestyle habits adopted (ranging from 0 to 3): regular physical activity (physical activity level ≥1.7), good diet quality (Canadian Healthy Eating Index score >80) and none-smoking status. The proportion of participants who adopted 3, 2, 1 or 0 lifestyle habits were 11%, 30%, 37%, and 23%, respectively. As the number of healthy lifestyle habits adopted increased, participants had significantly lower body mass index, waist circumference, body fat, total cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and systolic blood pressure (p < 0.05). In addition, a trend for lower estimated insulin resistance was observed (p = 0.06). For each increase of one healthy lifestyle habit, body mass index decreased by 1.9 kg/m(2), waist circumference by 4.0 cm for men and 4.8 cm for women and trunk fat by 3.6% for men and 4.1% for women.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest the importance of a healthy lifestyle among adults with T1D in order to control CMR factors.

Physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption in association with incidence of type 2 diabetes among middle-aged and elderly Chinese men

BACKGROUND

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent chronic disease worldwide. The prevalence of T2DM is increasing rapidly in China. Understanding the contribution of modifiable lifestyle factors on T2DM risk is imperative to prevent the development of T2DM in China.

METHODS

We examined associations between lifestyle factors including physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption with incidence of T2DM among middle-aged and elderly men in urban Shanghai. Information on socio-demographics, lifestyle habits, dietary habits, and disease history was collected via in-person interviews. Anthropometric measurements were taken. A total of 51 464 Chinese men aged 40-74 years free of T2DM, coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke at baseline were included in the current study. Incident T2DM was identified through follow-up surveys conducted every 2-3 years. Cox proportional hazard analyses were conducted to evaluate associations between lifestyle risk factors and incidence of T2DM.

RESULTS

We documented 1304 new cases of T2DM during 276 929 person-years of follow-up (average: 5.4 years). Physical activity was inversely associated with T2DM risk. Daily living, commuting, and total physical activity METs had inverse negative dose-response relationships with T2DM (P-trend = 0.0033, 0.0022, and <0.0001, respectively). Regular participation in exercise or sports reduced T2DM risk (HR = 0.86, 95%CI: 0.76-0.98). Moderate alcohol intake (1-3 drinks/day) was inversely related to T2DM risk (HR = 0.80, 95%CI: 0.67-0.94). Cigarette smoking, on the other hand, was associated with increased T2DM risk; HRs were 1.25 (95%CI: 1.00-1.56) for smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day and 1.28 (95%CI: 1.04-1.57) for smoking more than 40 pack-years.

CONCLUSIONS

Physical activity and moderate alcohol intake are inversely associated with T2DM risk, whereas smoking was positively associated with T2DM risk among middle-age and elderly Chinese men. Preventive measures should be developed to focus on these modifiable lifestyle habits to reduce the upward trend of T2DM.

Therapeutic improvement of glucoregulation in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients is associated with a reduction of IL-17 levels

We explored the effect of therapeutic glucoregulation on the blood levels of proinflammatory T helper (Th)17 cytokines interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-23, and Th1 cytokines interferon (IFN)-γ and IL-12 in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients. The investigated group consisted of 23 subjects (17 men and 6 women, age 26-64). The cytokine serum levels, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) as a marker of glucoregulation, homeostasis model assessment index as a measure of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and body mass index (BMI) were determined before and after 12 weeks of therapy consisting of standard lifestyle modification and metformin (1000 mg b.i.d.). The levels of Th17 and Th1 cytokines before treatment did not correlate with age, BMI or HOMA-IR. The patients with poor glucoregulation (HbA1c>7%, n=12), compared to those with good glucoregulation (HbA1c≤7%, n=11), had higher serum levels of Th17 and Th1 cytokines, but only the differences in IL-17 (median 21.2 pg/ml vs. 4.8 pg/ml) and IFN-γ 5 (0.6 pg/ml vs. 27.7 pg/ml) reached statistical significance (p=0.003 and p=0.012, respectively). The reduction of HbA1c values (from 8.6 to 5.9%, p=0.000) observed upon treatment in patients with poor glucoregulation was associated with a significant decrease in the concentration of IL-17 (from 21.2 to 12.9 pg/ml, p=0.020), but not IFN-γ (50.6 vs. 52.3, p=0.349). These data indicate that therapeutic improvement of glucoregulation might contribute to a reduction of IL-17 levels in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients.

Strategies for insulin initiation: insights from the French LIGHT observational study

BACKGROUND

The progressive nature of type 2 diabetes necessitates exogenous insulin use for most patients; basal insulin plus oral anti-diabetes drugs (OADs) is a well-validated way to facilitate insulin initiation. The primary aim of this study was to explore insulin initiation strategies and outcomes for patients using insulin detemir or glargine plus oral anti-diabetes drugs.

METHODS

LIGHT was a 3-month, longitudinal observational study conducted across 761 French centres in insulin-naïve type 2 diabetes patients managed under routine clinical care conditions, in either primary or secondary care. Endpoints included changes in HbA(1c) , fasting plasma glucose (FPG), rate of hypoglycaemia, weight, and adverse events.

RESULTS

Most physicians initiated a basal analogue to improve glycaemic control (97%), with many delaying beginning treatment for several months (9 ± 9.0 months for general practitioners, 10.2 ± 16.2 months for specialists). Most patients continued oral anti-diabetes drug therapy (95%) and lifestyle measures (92%), with 2-3 blood glucose readings per day and follow-up telephone calls for dose optimization. Mean change in HbA(1c) from baseline was - 1.3%, and - 3.1 mmol/L for fasting plasma glucose (both p < 0.0001). Hypoglycaemia increased from 1.4 to 5.6 events/patient/year (p < 0.0001), and weight decreased on average by 0.5 kg with detemir, with no change in glargine. Most patients (93%) reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their insulin.

CONCLUSIONS

Insulin initiation with detemir or glargine can be successfully managed in both primary and secondary care; the benefits of basal analogues (once-daily dosing, low rates of hypoglycaemia compared with neutral protamine Hagedorn) may have contributed to patient acceptance of the regimen.

Antioxidants, trace elements and metabolic syndrome in elderly subjects

OBJECTIVE

To examine whether concentrations of several trace elements and activities of several antioxidant enzymes are modified in metabolic syndrome, and to evaluate their possible association with metabolic syndrome components. Additionally, concentration of CRP, as a marker of inflammation, was measured.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS

The study group consisted of 100 subjects, aged 71-88 years.

MEASUREMENTS

Anthropometric measurements and biochemical analyses of fasting blood samples were performed by standardized methods. According to the International Diabetic Federation (IDF) criteria, metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 64 subjects. Whole blood glutathione peroxidase (GPx), erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), serum selenium (SSe), copper (SCu) and zinc (SZn), glucose, lipoprotein profile and C-reactive protein (CRP) were determined in all subjects.

RESULTS

No clear influence of metabolic syndrome on SSe, SZn and SCu concentration and SOD and CAT activity was found. However, significantly higher GPx was found in subjects with metabolic syndrome than in subjects without metabolic syndrome (p=0.029), as well as in subjects with hypertriglyceridemia than in control subjects (p=0.038). After adjusting for potentially confounding variables by multiple regression, significant positive relationship between SCu and CRP was found, indicating that elevated levels of Cu could have influence on inflammatory mechanisms.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that GPx and CRP, as biomarkers of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, respectively, have significant role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome.

Effect of total knee arthroplasty on metabolic syndrome

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of changing activity after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on metabolic syndrome with a follow-up period of 2 years. Two hundred consecutive patients who were to undergo TKA were prospectively enrolled. The patients' blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose level, the lipid profile, the waist circumference, the Knee Society score, and the Lower Extremity Activity Scale were measured preoperatively and at the 2-year follow-up visit. The data from 169 patients were finally collected and reviewed. Two years after primary TKA, there was no change in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, despite that the patients had a significant increase of their physical activity.

Obesity and the metabolic syndrome: role of different dietary macronutrient distribution patterns and specific nutritional components on weight loss and maintenance

Weight loss and subsequent body weight maintenance are difficult for obese individuals despite the wide variety of dietary regimens and approaches. A substantial body of scientific evidence has shown that by simply varying the macronutrient distribution and composition of dietary factors, weight losses of varying amounts, longer-term body weight maintenance periods, better appetite regulation, and changes in features of the metabolic syndrome can be achieved. At present, renewed efforts are underway to increase the protein content of weight-loss diets, simultaneously restrict fat consumption to no more than 30%, favor polyunsaturated fat, have carbohydrates account for between 40 and 50% of total energy intake, and promote the consumption of low-glycemic foods. The present article reviews the scientific evidence for the effects of several dietary manipulations and sustainable strategies for weight loss and body weight stability as well as for treating specific features of the metabolic syndrome.

Qualitative study to explore Prospect Theory and message framing and diet and cancer prevention-related issues among African American adolescents

BACKGROUND

There is a dearth of knowledge regarding factors that may motivate African American adolescents to consume healthier diets.

OBJECTIVE

To develop and test cancer prevention messages based on Prospect Theory on motivation to improve dietary intake in African American adolescents and to explore other salient factors that may inform dietary intervention design and implementation in this population.

METHODS

Semistructured in-person qualitative interviews were conducted with 13 African American male and female adolescents, aged 12 to 16 years, in North Carolina. Prospect Theory and message framing were used to guide the design of the 4 sets of diet-related messages related to cancer prevention: short-term, gain-framed; long-term, gain-framed; short-term, loss-framed; and long-term, loss-framed messages. Data were also collected on demographic, behavioral, and psychological factors; usual health behaviors; and preferences for intervention delivery.

RESULTS

Most respondents found the gain-framed, short-term messages most salient for both fruits/vegetables (8 [61.5%]) and fat consumption (7 [53.8%]). For fat consumption only, 2 (15.4%) found the loss-framed, short-term messages pertinent; none found the loss-framed, long-term messages relevant for either dietary variable. All indicated interest in participating in a dietary intervention/education program; most preferred the Internet as a channel for intervention delivery. Participants expressed diverse views regarding knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs regarding healthy eating.

CONCLUSION

The gain-framed, short-term messages were most salient for motivating the majority of respondents to consume a healthy diet and most expressed a strong interest in participating in programs about diet and nutrition, with the Internet as the preferred communication channel.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Researchers conducting dietary interventions and education initiatives and medical professionals who counsel African American adolescents should consider using Prospect Theory as a theoretical framework, should focus on gain-framed, short-term messages regarding cancer prevention, and should use the Internet for data collection and intervention and information delivery.

High attendance at a lifestyle intervention program is important to reduce risks related to metabolic syndrome in middle-aged Japanese

Evaluating attendance at health education programs is important to obtain a more comprehensive evaluation of the program impact. This study investigated whether attendance at a lifestyle intervention program in a community setting would reduce risks related to metabolic syndrome. Of 545 subjects with risks related to metabolic syndrome, i.e. overweight, hypertension, dyslipidemia or diabetes, participated in this non-randomized control study, 389 subjects aged 40-71 years completed the surveys at baseline and 27 months. Intervention group (39 males and 168 females) was provided 3 individual counseling plus 28 group sessions conducted monthly on average, whereas control group (64 males and 118 females) received only 7 health information newsletters by mail. Intervention group was subcategorized into two groups according to the median attendance (87.1%): 106 subjects with high attendance (93.8 +/- 4.7%) and 101 subjects with low attendance (68.6 +/- 16.0%). Logistic regression analyses adjusted for age and baseline value showed that among males, the proportion with dyslipidemia risk was lower only in high attendance group compared with that in control group at 27 months [Odds ratio (OR): 0.11 (95%CI 0.02 - 0.51)] and among females, the proportion of overweight was lower only in high attendance group [OR: 0.24 (95%CI 0.07 - 0.81)]. In females, the mean total risk score calculated by adding the number of the 4 risks present decreased only in high attendance group (p < 0.001). In conclusion, high attendance at a lifestyle intervention program impacts the reduction of risks related to metabolic syndrome in a Japanese community setting.
