Abstract
Background. Oxidative stress has been involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level is a reliable biomarker of oxidative stress status. In the present work, we aimed to analyze how a comprehensive characterization of the disease characteristics in RA, including a lipid profile, insulin resistance, and subclinical atherosclerosis, relates to serum MDA levels. Methods. In a cross-sectional study that included 430 RA patients, serum MDA levels were evaluated. Multivariable analysis was performed to examine the relationship of MDA with disease activity scores and disease characteristics, including subclinical carotid atherosclerosis, a comprehensive lipid molecule profile, and indices of insulin resistance and beta cell function indices. Results. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) showed a significant and positive relationship with MDA. However, this did not occur for other acute phase reactants such as C-reactive protein or interleukin-6. Although the DAS28-ESR score (Disease Activity Score in 28 joints) had a positive and significant association with MDA serum levels, other disease activity scores that do not use the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in their formula did not show a significant relationship with MDA. Other disease characteristics, such as disease duration and the existence of rheumatoid factor and antibodies against citrullinated protein, were not related to serum MDA levels. This also occurred for lipid profiles, insulin resistance indices, and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis, for which no associations with circulating MDA were found. Conclusions. The disease characteristics are not related to circulating MDA levels in patients with RA.

Abstract
Trace elements (TEs) are essential for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study aimed to prepare a TEs solution enriched with various organic states to evaluate its preventive, therapeutic effects, and mechanism of action in RA and to provide a treatment method for RA treatment. The TEs in natural ore were extracted and added to 0.5% (W/V) L-alanyl-L-glutamine (LG) to obtain a TEs solution (LG-WLYS), which was examined for its concentration and quality. The antioxidant properties and effects of LG-WLYS on cell behavior were evaluated at the cellular level. The preventive and therapeutic effects and mechanism of action of LG-WLYS in rats with RA were explored. The LG-WLYS solution was clear, free from visible foreign matter, and had a pH of 5.33 and an osmolality of 305.67 mOsmol/kg. LG-WLYS inhibited cell migration and angiogenesis. LG-WLYS solution induced macrophages to change from M1-type to M2-type, increased the content of antioxidant enzymes (glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and IL-10), decreased the levels of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, COX-2, and iNOs, scavenging reactive oxygen species from the lesion site, inhibiting the apoptosis of chondrocytes, regulating inflammatory microenvironment, and decreasing inflammation response to exert the therapeutic effect for RA. In conclusion, LG-WLYS has outstanding therapeutic and preventive effects against RA and has enormous potential for further development.

Abstract
Objective To examine the causal associations of diet-derived circulating antioxidants with knee osteoarthritis (OA), hip OA, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) within the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) framework. Method Independent single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with circulating levels of diet-derived antioxidants (retinol, β-carotene, lycopene, vitamin C and vitamin E) were extracted as genetic instruments. Summary statistics of genetic instruments associated with knee OA, hip OA, and RA were obtained from corresponding genome-wide association studies (GWASs). The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) was applied as the primary analysis method, with four sensitivity analysis approaches employed to evaluate the robustness of the primary results. Results Genetically determined per unit increment of absolute circulating levels of retinol was significantly associated with a reduced risk of hip OA [odds ratio (OR) = 0.45, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.26-0.78, p = 4.43 × 10-3], while genetically determined per unit increase in absolute circulating levels of β-carotene was suggestively associated with increased risk of RA (OR = 1.32, 95% CI 1.07-1.62, p = 9.10 × 10-3). No other causal association was found. Significant evidence for heterogeneity and pleiotropic outlier was only identified when absolute circulating vitamin C was evaluated as the exposure, whereas all sensitive analysis provided consistently non-significant results. Conclusion Our results demonstrated that genetically determined lifelong higher exposure to absolute circulating levels of retinol is associated with a decreased risk of hip OA. Further MR study with more genetic instruments for absolute circulating levels of antioxidants are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that destroys joints. The concentrations of elements (Zn, Cu, Mg, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, K, Na, Ca, Pb, and Cd), as well as antioxidant glutathione GSH and lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde MDA, will be determined in this study. METHOD The study involves 120 female RA patients and 60 healthy females in the control group, all of whom are between the ages of 20 and 60. Patients having diabetes, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or psoriasis, in addition to RA, were excluded. RESULTS When RA patients were compared to healthy individuals, the levels of Cu, Ni, Na, Pb, and Cd were significantly higher (p < 0.01), whereas the levels of Zn, Mg, Mn, Cr, Ca, K, and Fe were significantly lower (p < 0.01). The Cu/Zn (2.21 and 1.16) and Na/k (38.67 and 34.87) ratios were also found to be significantly higher in RA patients compared to controls. Furthermore, the data indicated that GSH concentrations in RA patients were significantly lower (p < 0.01) than those in controls (655.90 and 1345.17 mol/l, respectively). MDA levels in RA patients were significantly higher (p < 0.01) than those in controls (2.739 and 1.673 mol/l, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The data indicate that Cu/Zn and Na/k ratios can be of great value in the diagnosis and evaluation of RA patients. On this basis, we conclude that these elements can be relied upon to provide indications of RA risk and the measurement of oxidative stress can serve as a biomarker to monitor disease activity and severity in RA patients. Key Points • Trace elements may be of value and may have an expected significance in the early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment evaluation of rheumatoid arthritis. • The distortion in the levels of trace elements may reflect their possible role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. • Oxidative stress can act as a biomarker to monitor disease activity and severity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. • The trace elements can contribute to the manifestation of inflammatory diseases due to their role in the synthesis of some antioxidants or due to their effect on the immune system.

Abstract
Our aim was to examine whether vanadium (IV) corrects alterations in zinc, copper and manganese homeostasis, observed in streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats, and whether such changes are related to divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) mRNA expression, and antioxidant and proinflammatory parameters. Four groups of Wistar rats were examined: control; hyperglycemic (H); hyperglycemic treated with 1 mg V/day (HV); and hyperglycemic treated with 3 mg V/day (HVH). Vanadium was supplied in drinking water as bis(maltolato)oxovanadium(IV) for five weeks. Zinc, copper and manganese were measured in food, excreta, serum and tissues. DMT1 mRNA expression was quantified in the liver. Hyperglycemic rats showed increased Zn and Cu absorption and content in the liver, serum, kidneys and femurs; DMT1 expression also increased (p < 0.05 in all cases). HV rats showed no changes compared to H rats other than decreased DMT1 expression (p < 0.05). In the HVH group, decreased absorption and tissular content of studied elements (p < 0.05 in all cases) and DMT1 expression compared to H (p < 0.05) were observed. Liver zinc, copper and manganese content correlated positively with glutathione peroxidase activity and negatively with catalase activity (p < 0.05 in both cases). In conclusion, treatment with 3 mg V/d reverted the alterations in zinc and copper homeostasis caused by hyperglycemia, possibly facilitated by decreased DMT1 expression.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which inflammation and oxidative stress play a key role in its pathophysiology. Complementary therapies along with medications may be effective in the control of RA. Propolis is a natural substance extracted from beehives, which have confirmed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The present study aimed to review the possible effects of propolis on inflammation, oxidative stress, and lipid profile in patients with RA. English articles in online databases such as PubMed‑Medline, AMED, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched. Pieces of evidence show that supplementation with propolis may have therapeutic effects on RA patients. Due to increased inflammation and oxidative stress in the affected joints of RA patients, propolis could inhibit the inflammatory cascades by inhibiting the nuclear factor kappa B pathway and reducing reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and interleukin-17 by increasing some antioxidants. Therefore, inflammation and pain reduce, helping improve and control RA in patients. Further investigations are required with larger sample sizes and different doses of propolis to demonstrate the definite effects of propolis on various aspects of RA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The healthy diet is important to maintain immunity against infection. This study aimed to assess and compare the consumption of functional foods, some antioxidants, and dietary inflammatory index between Iranian COVID-19 patients and healthy persons. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted between 1000 (500 cases and 500 controls) adults aged 18–65years in Iran, that were sampling based on the snowball method and their information was collected electronically. The dietary intake was assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). RESULTS: There was a significant difference (p = 0.044) in vitamin D consumption between healthy people and COVID-19 patients. Vitamin E intake in healthy participants was significantly (p = 0.041) more than COVID-19 patients. There was a significant difference in Zinc (p = 0.011), selenium (p = 0.021), and vitamin C (p = 0.023) between healthy persons and COVID-19 patients. Healthy participants’ consumption of onion (56.5±7.82 g/day), garlic (4.32±0.01 g/day) and oat (6.32±0.71 g/day) was significantly (p≤0.05) more than COVID-19 patients. With the increase of each unit in the score of the dietary inflammatory index, the risk of COVID-19 incidence increased 1.63 times (OR = 1.63 95% CI: 1.54–1.72). There was an inverse association between the consumption of antioxidants and functional foods with the risk of COVID-19 incidence in the study population (p≤0.05). CONCLUSION: Healthy people consumption of antioxidants and functional foods was more than COVID-19 patients and there was a significant inverse association between the risk of COVID- 19 incidence with the consumption of functional foods and antioxidants. Increasing the dietary inflammatory index score increased the risk of COVID- 19 incidence. There is a need for further clinical trials to confirm the effect of consuming functional foods and antioxidants on the prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia (SCZ) is an incurable neuropsychiatric disorder generally described by impaired social behavior and altered recognition of reality. For the first time, this study explored serum levels of antioxidants (vitamin A, E, and C), malondialdehyde (MDA), macro-minerals (calcium, potassium, and sodium), and trace elements (zinc, iron, and selenium) in Bangladeshi patients with SCZ and thereby, discovering any pathophysiological correlation. METHODS This case-controlled study evaluated 63 patients with SCZ as cases and 63 healthy individuals as controls. Vitamin A and E levels were defined by RP-HPLC. MDA and vitamin C levels were measured by using UV spectrophotometry, and macro and trace elements by atomic absorption spectroscopy. RESULTS This study found significantly (P ≤ 0.05) elevated MDA levels and decreased levels of antioxidants-vitamin A, C, and E and significantly (P ≤ 0.05) diminished levels of macro and trace elements in cases in contrast to the controls. Serum levels of zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and sodium (Na) were determined to be 0.33 ± 0.008, 0.0252 ± 0.00060, 0.24 ± 0.01, 64.18 ± 2.72, 36.88 ± 2.56, and 2657.5 ± 53.32 mg/L, respectively, in cases, whereas 0.79 ± 0.03, 0.0650 ± 0.00355,0.78 ± 0.03, 168.01 ± 2.85, 86.43 ± 2.55, and 3200.8 ± 29.96 mg/L, respectively, were determined in controls. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between Zn and Na, Zn and K, Zn and Ca, Zn and Fe, Zn and Se, Fe and Na, and Fe and Se in patients. CONCLUSIONS The findings connect that the pathogenesis of SCZ may have a correlation with altered levels of antioxidants, MDA, macro-minerals, and trace elements.

Abstract
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is the most prevalent cause of the systematic inflammatory arthritis that destroys the joints. While the pathogenesis of RA remains to be clarified, the imbalance in the oxidant and anti-oxidant defense system plays a crucial role. This study aims to evaluate oxidant and anti-oxidant levels of RA patients and their impacts on the activity of the disease via in silico studies. 28 patients who had not previously received any treatment for RA and 20 healthy controls were included. Their oxidative stress markers, antioxidant markers, and inflammatory factors were investigated via in silico studies. Compared to the Control Group, serum CRP levels, MDA levels, and XO activities were higher in RA Group. Cu/ZnSOD and GPx activities decreased while CAT activities remained unchanged. Besides, there was a positive correlation between MDA-serum CRP levels but a negative correlation between MDA levels-Cu/ZnSOD activities. Furthermore, we observed a negative correlation between CRP levels and Cu/ZnSOD activities. Based on these results, it was concluded that oxidative stress had increased, the defense system had weakened, and ROS production had increased. Finally, our study results with SOD and CAT activity were confirmed by molecular docking studies.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a highly debilitating chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease most prevalent in women. The true etiology of this disease is complex, multifactorial, and is yet to be completely elucidated. However, oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation are associated with the development and pathogenesis of RA. In this case, oxidative damage biomarkers have been found to be significantly higher in RA patients, associated with the oxidation of biomolecules and the stimulation of inflammatory responses. Lipid peroxidation is one of the major consequences of oxidative stress, with the formation of deleterious lipid hydroperoxides and electrophilic reactive lipid species. Additionally, changes in the lipoprotein profile seem to be common in RA, contributing to cardiovascular diseases and a chronic inflammatory environment. Nevertheless, changes in the lipid profile at a molecular level in RA are still poorly understood. Therefore, the goal of this review was to gather all the information regarding lipid alterations in RA analyzed by mass spectrometry. Studies on the variation of lipid profile in RA using lipidomics showed that fatty acid and phospholipid metabolisms, especially in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, are affected in this disease. These promising results could lead to the discovery of new diagnostic lipid biomarkers for early diagnosis of RA and targets for personalized medicine.

Abstract
Background Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a major cause of death globally. Countries vary in their rates, and changes have occurred over time. Nowadays, developing countries pose new public health challenges. Objectives The objective of the present study was to appraise the alterations in the levels of serum Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn that occur in patients with ischemic heart disease and to depict the correlations of the effects of these changes that lead to the pathogenesis of IHD. Methods Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn in the IHD patients were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Results This study evaluated 52 patients with IHD, and 61 healthy volunteers served as controls. The primary outcomes of interest were explored regarding the correlations of the serum levels of these trace elements in patients with IHD. The secondary outcomes were explored in terms of inter-element relations to connect them with the pathogenesis of IHD. Our study found significantly reduced levels of Zn and Cu (2.50 ± 0.19 mg/L and 2.52 ± 0.17 mg/L, respectively) and an elevated level of Fe (148.97 ± 17.25 mg/L) in the patient group with IHD. The level of Mn (7.32 ± 1.23 mg/L) was elevated in the sera of the patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) compared to healthy control subjects. Conclusion Our results indicate strong associations of the pathogenesis of IHD with depleted serum levels of Zn and Cu and elevated Fe and Mn levels, which may provide a prognostic tool for the treatment of this concerning the disease.
