Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sexual minorities may be more vulnerable to mental disorders. Previous studies have found associations between diet and depression, but no studies have focused on the interaction between nutrition-related parameters and sexual orientation regarding depression. This study aims to explore the interaction between nutrition-related parameters and sexual orientation regarding depression. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis using NHANES 2007-2016 data. METHODS This study utilized data from NHANES 2007-2016, with 11,065 participants involved. Nutrition-related parameters were evaluated using the healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015) and the dietary inflammation index (DII), while depression was obtained through Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Logistic regression and stratified analysis of subgroups were used in this study. RESULTS Compared to those who consumed healthy and anti-inflammatory diets, the ORs for depression in groups consuming unhealthy and pro-inflammatory diets were 1.366 (95%CI:1.073,1.738) and 1.652 (95%CI:1.345,2.028), respectively. Sexual minorities have a higher risk of depression than heterosexuals. There is an interaction effect (P = 0.037) between HEI-2015 and sexual orientation on depression, while it was not found in DII. Subgroup analysis indicated that the interaction between sexual orientation and HEI-2015 persisted in males (P = 0.024), but not in females. CONCLUSION Both diet and sexual orientation had impacts on depression. There was an interaction between HEI-2015 and sexual orientation on depression, and this association was different by gender. Sexual minorities who are Gay/lesbian, Bisexual, and Something else are at higher risk for depression, and adopting healthy eating patterns and anti-inflammatory diets that are consistent with the recommendations of the USDA may appropriately reduce the risk of depression.

Abstract
Purpose This systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical observational studies aims to clarify the correlation between the intake levels of fruits and vegetables and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Materials and methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies on the association between vegetable or fruit intake with the risk of NAFLD from the foundation of each database up until September 2023. The relative risk (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled for both the highest and lowest consumption levels of vegetables and fruits to explore their association with the incidence of NAFLD. Results The meta-analysis encompassed 11 studies with a total of 493,682 patients. A higher consumption of vegetables (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.67-0.91) and fruits (OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.83-0.93) was found to have a negative correlation with the risk of NAFLD, denoting an inverse association. This correlation, however, varied among different ethnic groups and gender. Conclusions Our results indicate that increased consumption of vegetables and fruits is associated with a reduced likelihood of developing NAFLD. Abstract
BACKGROUND Heterogeneity in ageing rates drives the need for research into lifestyle secrets of successful agers. Biological age, predicted by epigenetic clocks, has been shown to be a more reliable measure of ageing than chronological age. Dietary habits are known to affect the ageing process. However, much remains to be learnt about specific dietary habits that may directly affect the biological process of ageing. OBJECTIVE To identify food groups that are directly related to biological ageing, using Copula Graphical Models. METHODS We performed a preregistered analysis of 3,990 postmenopausal women from the Women's Health Initiative, based in North America. Biological age acceleration was calculated by the epigenetic clock PhenoAge using whole-blood DNA methylation. Copula Graphical Modelling, a powerful data-driven exploratory tool, was used to examine relations between food groups and biological ageing whilst adjusting for an extensive amount of confounders. Two food group-age acceleration networks were established: one based on the MyPyramid food grouping system and another based on item-level food group data. RESULTS Intake of eggs, organ meat, sausages, cheese, legumes, starchy vegetables, added sugar and lunch meat was associated with biological age acceleration, whereas intake of peaches/nectarines/plums, poultry, nuts, discretionary oil and solid fat was associated with decelerated ageing. CONCLUSION We identified several associations between specific food groups and biological ageing. These findings pave the way for subsequent studies to ascertain causality and magnitude of these relationships, thereby improving the understanding of biological mechanisms underlying the interplay between food groups and biological ageing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is characterized by a high inflammation status with ever-increasing prevalence, and defined as low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or albuminuria. Both low eGFR and albuminuria can have independent effects on the body. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) is a validated tool used to assess the inflammatory potential of the diet. We aim to explore not only the association between DII and CKD, but also the associations of DII with low eGFR and albuminuria, respectively. In addition, their associations in different subgroups remain to be explored. METHODS AND RESULTS 18,070 participants from the 2011-2018 NHANES with complete data of dietary intake and laboratory data were involved in our study. The data of 24-hour dietary recall interview was used to calculate DII, CKD could be reflected by laboratory data of creatinine and albumin. Then weighted multivariate logistic regression models and subgroup analyses were performed. The prevalence of low eGFR, albuminuria and CKD were 6.8%, 9.8% and 14.5%, respectively. A positive association between DII and low eGFR was observed (OR=1.12, 95%CI: 1.05-1.21), Q2, Q3 and Q4 are positively associated with a significant 39%, 65% and 71% increased risk of low eGFR compared with Q1 (P for trend<0.05). DII was also associated with CKD (OR=1.06, 95%CI: 1.01-1.11). CONCLUSION Significant positive associations of DII with CKD and low eGFR were observed. But we didn't find such association between DII and albuminuria.

Abstract
The association between time-restricted eating (TRE) and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is less studied. Moreover, whether the association is independent of physical exercise or diet quality or quantity is uncertain. In this nationwide cross-sectional study of 3813 participants, the timing of food intakes was recorded by 24-h recalls; NAFLD was defined through vibration-controlled transient elastography in the absence of other causes of chronic liver disease. OR and 95 % CI were estimated using logistic regression. Participants with daily eating window of ≤ 8 h had lower odds of NAFLD (OR = 0·70, 95 % CI: 0·52, 0·93), compared with those with ≥ 10 h window. Early (05.00-15.00) and late TRE (11.00-21.00) showed inverse associations with NAFLD prevalence without statistical heterogeneity (Pheterogeneity = 0·649) with OR of 0·73 (95 % CI: 0·36, 1·47) and 0·61 (95 % CI: 0·44, 0·84), respectively. Such inverse association seemed stronger in participants with lower energy intake (OR = 0·58, 95 % CI: 0·38, 0·89, Pinteraction = 0·020). There are no statistical differences in the TRE-NAFLD associations according to physical activity (Pinteraction = 0·390) or diet quality (Pinteraction = 0·110). TRE might be associated with lower likelihood of NAFLD. Such inverse association is independent of physical activity and diet quality and appears stronger in individuals consuming lower energy. Given the potential misclassification of TRE based on one- or two-day recall in the analysis, epidemiological studies with validated methods for measuring the habitual timing of dietary intake are warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE Plant-based diets, particularly when rich in healthy plant foods, have been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the impact of plant-based diets that distinguish between healthy and unhealthy plant foods on cardiometabolic biomarkers remains unclear. METHODS Dietary information was collected by two 24-h recalls among 34,785 adults from a nationwide cross-sectional study. Plasma levels of insulin, C-peptide, glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC) count, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured. Linear regression was used to evaluate the percentage difference in plasma marker concentrations by three plant-based diet indices, namely the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthful PDI (hPDI), and the unhealthful PDI (uPDI). RESULTS Greater hPDI-adherence scores (comparing extreme quartiles) were associated with lower levels of insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), TG/HDL-C ratio, CRP, WBC count, and TG, and higher levels of HDL-C, with the percentage differences of - 14.55, - 15.72, - 11.57, - 14.95, - 5.26, - 7.10, and 5.01, respectively (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001). Conversely, uPDI was associated with higher levels of insulin, C-peptide, HOMA-IR, TG/HDL-C ratio, CRP, WBC count, and TG, but lower HDL-C, with the percentage differences of 13.71, 14.00, 14.10, 10.43, 3.32, 8.00, and - 4.98 (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001), respectively. Overall PDI was only associated with lower levels of CRP and WBC count (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that hPDI may have positive, whereas uPDI may have negative impacts on multiple cardiometabolic risk markers, and underscore the need to consider the quality of plant foods in future PDI studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher dietary quality, including increased vegetable consumption, was associated with a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, specific vegetable consumption in the development of MetS remains obscure. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between starchy and non-starchy vegetables and MetS. METHODS Secondary data analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2018). MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII) and dietary consumption was assessed by trained staff using two 24-h diet recall methods. Weighted logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were performed to further investigate specific vegetable subtypes and MetS. RESULTS This research enrolled 24,646 individuals (11,725 females and 12,921 males), with an average age of 45.84 ± 0.23 years. Approximately 15,828(64.22%) participants were defined to be with non-MetS and 8818(35.78%) were with MetS. Both total starchy vegetables and potatoes were associated with increased MetS risk, with the corresponding OR per standard deviation (SD) (95%CI, p-trend) being 1.06(1.02-1.11, p-trend = 0.028) and 1.08(1.04-1.13, p-trend = 0.011), respectively. However, an inverse correlation was found between dark-green vegetables and MetS, and the OR per SD (95%CI, p-trend) was 0.93(0.90-0.97, p-trend = 0.010). Subgroup analyses showed that the positive associations of starchy vegetables and potatoes on MetS risk were stronger in non-Hispanic White participants (p for interaction < 0.050). CONCLUSION Total starchy vegetables and white potatoes were both associated with an increased risk of MetS, while consumption of dark-green vegetables was negatively associated with MetS risk. These findings might provide a promising and healthy dietary strategy for preventing MetS.

A prospective cohort study of starchy and non-starchy vegetable intake and mortality risk. Br J Nutr 2022:1-9. Abstract
Whether starchy and non-starchy vegetables have distinct impacts on health remains unknown. We prospectively investigated the intake of starchy and non-starchy vegetables in relation to mortality risk in a nationwide cohort. Diet was assessed using 24-h dietary recalls. Deaths were identified via the record linkage to the National Death Index. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI were calculated using Cox regression. During a median follow-up of 7·8 years, 4904 deaths were documented among 40 074 participants aged 18 years or older. Compared to those with no consumption, participants with daily consumption of ≥ 1 serving of non-starchy vegetables had a lower risk of mortality (HR = 0·76, 95 % CI 0·66, 0·88, Ptrend = 0·001). Dark-green and deep-yellow vegetables (HR = 0·79, 95 % CI 0·63, 0·99, Ptrend = 0·023) and other non-starchy vegetables (HR = 0·80, 95 % CI 0·70, 0·92, Ptrend = 0·004) showed similar results. Total starchy vegetable intake exhibited a marginally weak inverse association with mortality risk (HR = 0·89, 95 % CI 0·80, 1·00, Ptrend = 0·048), while potatoes showed a null association (HR = 0·93, 95 % CI 0·82, 1·06, Ptrend = 0·186). Restricted cubic spline analysis suggested a linear dose-response relationship between vegetable intake and death risk, with a plateau at over 300 and 200 g/d for total and non-starchy vegetables, respectively. Compared with starchy vegetables, non-starchy vegetables might be more beneficial to health, although both showed a protective association with mortality risk. The risk reduction in mortality plateaued at approximately 200 g/d for non-starchy vegetables and 300 g/d for total vegetables.

Abstract
There is little evidence for the associations of the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthful PDI (hPDI), and the unhealthful PDI (uPDI) with the odds of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We present a nationwide cross-sectional study among US adults aged 18 years or older. Diet was assessed by 24-h recalls. Overall PDI, hPDI, and uPDI were constructed based on 18 food groups. NAFLD was defined based on controlled attenuation parameter derived via transient elastography (TE) in the absence of other causes of chronic liver disease. Among 3900 participants with eligible TE examination, 1686 were diagnosed with NAFLD. The overall PDI was not associated with NAFLD prevalence (comparing extreme tertiles of PDI score OR = 1.03, 95% CI 0.76, 1.38, ptrend = 0.609). However, hPDI was inversely (OR = 0.50, 95% CI 0.35, 0.72, ptrend < 0.001), while uPDI was positively associated with odds of NAFLD (OR = 1.37, 95% CI 0.93, 2.02, ptrend = 0.009) in the multivariable-adjusted models without body mass index (BMI). After further adjustment for BMI, only the association of hPDI with NAFLD remained statistically significant (OR = 0.64, 95% CI 0.46, 0.87, ptrend = 0.006). Such inverse association appeared stronger in non-Hispanic whites, but not in other racial/ethnic groups (pinteraction = 0.009). Our findings suggest that a plant-based diet rich in healthy plant foods might be associated with lower odds of NAFLD, particularly among US non-Hispanic whites. Clinical trials and cohort studies to validate our findings are needed.
