Abstract
A fluorescent immunosorbent assay incorporating signal amplification away from the surface of spherical nucleic acid (SNA) was developed for the detection of chloramphenicol (CAP). Through the conjugation of antibodies and poly-adenine (polyA) DNA onto the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), the fabrication of the nano-immunoprobe was achieved in a more straightforward and cost-effective manner. Moreover, a strategy utilizing the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) in the amplification step was devised, with particular attention given to the enzyme inhibition associated with SNA. The results demonstrated good performance on CAP detection with a linear range of 0.01-5 ng/L with a detection limit of 0.005 ng/L. The significance of this work mainly lies in the polyA-SNA-based immunoprobe and the thoughtful design to prevent enzyme inhibition.

Abstract
Antibiotics are widely used as bacteriostatic or bactericidal agents against various microbial infections in humans and animals. The excessive use of antibiotics has led to an accumulation of their residues in food products, which ultimately poses a threat to human health. In light of the shortcomings of conventional methods for antibiotic detection (primarily cost, proficiency, and time-consuming procedures), the development of robust, accurate, on-site, and sensitive technologies for antibiotic detection in foodstuffs is important. Nanomaterials with amazing optical properties are promising materials for developing the next generation of fluorescent sensors. In this article, advances in detecting antibiotics in food products are discussed with respect to their sensing applications, with a focus on fluorescent nanomaterials such as metallic nanoparticles, upconversion nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon-based nanomaterials, and metal-organic frameworks. Furthermore, their performance is evaluated to promote the continuation of technical advances.

Abstract
Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are known to possess unique characteristics, which allow them to overcome a number of issues that plague traditional fluorescence probes. UCNPs have been employed in a variety of applications, but it is arguably in the realm of optical sensors where they have shown the most promise. Biomolecule conjugated UCNPs-based fluorescence probes have been developed to detect and quantify a wide range of analytes, from metal ions to biomolecules, with great specificity and sensitivity. In this review, we have given much emphasis on the recent trends and progress in the preparation strategies of bioconjugated UCNPs and their potential application as fluorescence sensors in the trace level detection of food industry-based toxicants and adulterants. The paper discusses the preparation and functionalisation strategies of commonly used biomolecules over the surface of UCNPs. The use of different sensing strategies namely heterogenous and homogenous assays, underlying fluorescence mechanisms in the detection process of food adulterants are summarized in detail. This review might set a precedent for future multidisciplinary research including the development of novel biomolecules conjugated UCNPs for potential applications in food science and technology.

Abstract
A novel poly(styrene--ε-caprolactone)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes/cholesterol oxidase film-coated glassy carbon electrode was designed for cholesterol detection by square wave voltammetry (SWV). The biosensor responded to cholesterol with a measurement concentration range between 1 and 130 μM, a relative standard deviation of only 0.095% and accuracy of 100.42% ±2.85 with the SWV technique in the potential range from -0.6 to +0.6 V. The limit of detection was calculated to be 0.63 μM. The biosensor was preserved 91 and 84% of its initial response at the end of the 9st and 25st days, respectively. Human serum from human male AB plasma was analyzed without pretreatment except for dilution to investigate the performance of the biosensor in a complex medium.

Abstract
In this paper, the electrochemical response of chloramphenicol (CHL) was investigated on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and after modification with reduced graphene oxide (GCE/rGO). Preliminary studies by cyclic voltammetry demonstrated an adsorption-controlled mass transport regime of CHL species and a pH-dependent behavior on both electrode surfaces. An adsorptive stripping differential pulse voltammetry (AdSDPV) method was proposed and under optimized instrumental conditions, a comparison of the analytical characteristics of both sensors was performed. The GCE/rGO sensor showed an increase in sensitivity (10-fold), and an anticipation of the reduction potential (200 mV), compared to the bare electrode, due to the adsorptive character (pre-concentration of the CHL species) and the electrocatalytic effect of the nanomaterial. The method was applied to skimmed and whole milk samples, which were simply diluted (50-fold) in supporting electrolyte. The results by AdSDPV using GCE/rGO showed adequate detectability (0.22 μmol L-1), good precision with a 6% relative standard deviation (RSD) and satisfactory recovery ranging from 93 to 108%. The obtained results were statistically similar (95% confidence level) with those performed through ultra-fast liquid chromatography (UFLC). Furthermore, the sensor showed an improvement in the analytical performance for CHL detection, when compared to other sensors reported in the literature. Therefore, the developed method is reliable and promising for implementation in monitoring CHL residues in milk samples.

Abstract
The food safety issue has gradually become the focus of attention in modern society. The presence of food contaminants poses a threat to human health and there are a number of interesting researches on the detection of food contaminants. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are superior to other fluorescence materials, considering the benefits of large anti-Stokes shifts, high chemical stability, non-autofluorescence, good light penetration ability, and low toxicity. These properties render UCNPs promising candidates as luminescent labels in biodetection, which provides opportunities as a sensitive, accurate, and rapid detection method. This paper intended to review the research progress of food contaminants detection by UCNPs-based sensors. We have proposed the key criteria for UCNPs in the detection of food contaminants. Additionally, it highlighted the construction process of the UCNPs-based sensors, which includes the synthesis and modification of UCNPs, selection of the recognition elements, and consideration of the detection principle. Moreover, six kinds of food contaminants detected by UCNPs technology in the past 5 years have been summarized and discussed fairly. Last but not least, it is outlined that UCNPs have great potential to be applied in food safety detection and threw new insight into the challenges ahead.

Abstract
A microfluidic colorimetric biosensor was developed using thiolated polystyrene microspheres (SH-PSs) for aggregating of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), a novel hose-based microvalve for controlling the flow direction, and a smartphone imaging APP for monitoring colorimetric signals. Aptamer-PS-cysteamine conjugates were used as detection probes and reacted with Salmonella in samples. Complementary DNA - magnetic nanoparticle (cDNA - MNP) conjugates were used as capture probes, reacted with the free aptamer-PS-cysteamine conjugates. AuNPs were aggregated on the surface of Salmonella-aptamer-PS-cysteamine conjugates, resulting in a visible color change in the detection chamber, which indicating different concentrations of Salmonella. The limit of detection was low to 6.0 × 101 cfu/mL. The microfluidic biosensor exhibited a good specificity. It was evaluated by analyzing salad samples spiked with Salmonella. The recoveries ranged from 91.68% to 113.76%, which indicated its potential application in real samples.
