Abstract
This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from studies that explored cancer awareness among adolescents. The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) guidelines. Seven electronic databases were systematically searched for studies published between January 2010 and March 2022. The search was updated in April 2024. Data extraction and quality appraisal were performed. Data were synthesized narratively. A total of 21 studies were included for review. Overall, adolescents were found to have low cancer symptom awareness and to report several perceived barriers to symptomatic presentation for cancer. Adolescents also seemed underinformed about modifiable lifestyle behaviours associated with cancer, which has the potential to lead to a higher level of engagement in health risk behaviours. Findings from this review indicate the importance of actively promoting cancer awareness among adolescents. This has the potential to lead to increased knowledge and help-seeking for symptoms of cancer among adolescents, which in turn would lead to earlier diagnosis and ultimately more positive patient outcomes.

Abstract
Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, making it a significant global health issue. Approximately half of cancer cases are linked solely to behavioral habits. Lifestyle changes made at a young age are easier to adopt and have lasting effects on future health, making early awareness about cancer essential. The "OncoAcademy: The Key to Health" project, aimed at high school Polish students, has been created to promote a positive health attitude and increase awareness among young people about cancer and methods of its prevention. From September 2023 to November 2024, we conducted educational sessions for 3000 high school students and assessed their cancer prevention knowledge before and after the project. Results revealed that students' level of knowledge before classes was moderate (M = 51.76%; SD = 13.63%). On average, students correctly answered 13 of 26 questions. After classes, the level of knowledge was assessed as moderately good (M = 62.47%; SD = 14.48%). On average, students correctly answered 16 out of 26 questions. The analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between the general level of knowledge-after classes, students achieved significantly better scores. This study highlighted changes in students' awareness and knowledge about cancer brought about by implementing a cancer education project. Generally, high school students in Poland have basic knowledge about cancer and its risk factors. Most adolescents are aware of the significant impact of lifestyle on cancer risk. Early education on cancer prevention, mainly aimed at lifestyle changes, is crucial. Enhancing adolescents' understanding of risk factors can play a significant role in lowering future cancer rates.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess adolescents' awareness of cancer signs and symptoms, cancer risk factors, cancer screening programmes, and perceived barriers to seeking medical advice. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an adapted version of the adolescent cancer awareness tool which was originally modified from the Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM) (Version 2.1). The sample included 474 adolescents aged 15 to 18 years recruited from nine Irish schools between November 2021 and May 2022. RESULTS Awareness of cancer warning signs and symptoms was low when open-ended (recall) questions were used and relatively high for closed (recognition) questions. Unexplained lump or swelling was the most frequently identified cancer symptom. The least reported were difficulty swallowing and a sore that does not heal. Smoking was the most reported cancer risk factor. The least reported were not eating enough fruit and vegetables, a diet high in fat, and infection with viruses. Generally, females had greater awareness than males. The greatest barrier to seeking help was "worry about what the doctor might find" and the least reported barrier was "I don't feel respected by the doctor." CONCLUSIONS Overall recognition of symptoms or risk factors of cancer was higher than recall. Several modifiable barriers to medical help-seeking were identified. Findings from this study suggest further exploration using a qualitative approach to investigate the factors influencing adolescents' cancer awareness and barriers to help-seeking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health education conducted by community health workers (CHWs) is an evidence-based strategy for promoting cancer prevention, cancer screening, and adherence to medical guidance from doctors. However, CHWs are confronted with some problems related to cancer health education in China. This study aimed to clarify CHWs' awareness of problems in cancer health education in China and the solutions that they were considering to improve the quality and efficiency of cancer health education. METHODS A qualitative descriptive design with purposive sampling was applied in eight primary health care sectors in Guangyuan and Chengdu in Sichuan, China. Face-to-face, in-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted, and a total of 60 CHWs were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and imported into Nvivo12.0. Thematic analysis using the constant comparative method was used to analyze the data. RESULTS Uncooperative inhabitants, poor organization, low-frequency provision, and inadequate training for CHWs were problems related to cancer health education provided by CHWs in China. CHWs proposed some suggestions to improve the accessibility and acceptability of cancer health education, including combining online and offline education, health education after screening, cancer plus others, health education in the workplace, and volunteer recruitment. CONCLUSIONS Both the problems and suggestions described in this study may provide evidence for cancer health education and policy-making related to cancer prevention and control in China.

Abstract
Children's early awareness about cancer, through exposure to cancer biology and prevention strategies and research principles, is a promising focus of education and learning. It may also benefit the pipeline of people entering into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. We describe an educational pilot program for elementary school students, using developmentally appropriate activities focused on cancer at a museum dedicated to children's maker-centered learning and STEM. The program was implemented through a public school in Washington, DC serving students underrepresented in STEM. Program conceptualization, museum and school engagement, and maker learning pedagogy are described, as well as curricular outcomes. A total of N = 111 students (44% female, 75% Black/African American, 5% Latine) participated in a day-long field trip. Museum educators, assisted by cancer center researchers, led a multipart workshop on cancer and the environment and hands-on rotation of activities in microbiology, immunology, and ultraviolet radiation safety; students then completed self-report evaluations. Results indicate that nearly all (> 95%) students practiced activities typical of a STEM professional at the program, and > 70% correctly answered factual questions about topics studied. Importantly, 87-94% demonstrated clear STEM interest, a sense of belonging in the field, and practice implementing skills for success in STEM (e.g., perseverance, imagination, teamwork). This pilot demonstrated acceptability and feasibility in delivering a cancer-focused curriculum to underserved elementary students using maker learning while favorably impacting key objectives. Future scale-up of this program is warranted, with the potential to increase students' motivation to engage in STEM and cancer research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Potentially modifiable cancer risk factors have been increasingly recognized among the Chinese population. In this study, we aimed to investigate the perceived significance of these risk factors among senior nursing officers, who play a crucial role in providing healthcare services. We also sought to determine senior nursing officers' performance in reducing these risk factors. METHODS A questionnaire survey regarding 23 potentially modifiable cancer risk factors was conducted in November 2023 with 58 senior nursing officers at Taizhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province, China. The consistent fuzzy preference relation method and importance-performance analysis were used to determine the attribute weights and performance levels. RESULTS The senior nursing officers considered diabetes, ultraviolet radiation exposure, PM2.5 exposure, excess body weight, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption and secondhand smoking significant. However, performance in reducing secondhand smoking, physical inactivity, excess body weight, PM2.5 exposure, and ultraviolet radiation exposure required improvement. CONCLUSIONS The proposed hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making model enhances our understanding of the perceived significance of 23 modifiable cancer risk factors and performance in reducing them, which could facilitate improvements in health education efforts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cancer education has been promoted under the Basic Plan for Cancer Education in Japan. We conducted a repeated cross-sectional survey of Japanese students to determine changes in attitudes regarding cancer over time. METHODS A nationwide survey of fifth-grade elementary students was conducted in February 2013. A repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted following previous studies with second-year high school students in February 2019, as second-year high school students in 2019 corresponded to the generation of fifth-grade students in 2013. The self-administered, multiple-choice questionnaire inquired about the awareness of cancer and its causes and sources of cancer information. Statistical analyses were performed by calculating the percentage of selections and 95% confidence intervals for each question. RESULTS The differences between values in 2019 and 2013 were examined. Responses were received from 94 schools (44.1%) in 2013 and 114 schools (52.8%) in 2019. After excluding incomplete responses, valid responses from 2213 and 3822 respondents, respectively, were analyzed. Desirable changes over time were observed in awareness. Increasing age was associated with a rise in misperceptions and a decline in desirable rather than undesirable perceptions of the causes of cancer. The Internet was a common source of information among high school students, followed by health education at school. CONCLUSION Cancer education in schools should aim to counteract misconceptions and promote positive, evidence-based information. Improving perceptions of cancer screening could increase intentions of undergoing screening. Additionally, presenting cancer information using social networking sites could help promote cancer prevention among junior high and high school students.

Abstract
Substance misuse, obesity, mental health conditions, type 1 diabetes, cancers, and cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases together account for 41% of disability-adjusted life years linked to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) among children and adolescents worldwide. However, the evidence on risk factors and interventions for this age group is scarce. Here we searched four databases to generate an evidence gap map of existing interventions and research gaps for these risk factors and NCDs. We mapped 159 reviews with 2,611 primary studies; most (96.2%) were conducted in high-income countries, and only 100 studies (3.8%) were from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The efficacy of therapeutic interventions on biomarkers and adverse events for NCDs appears to be well evidenced. Interventions for mental health conditions appear to be moderately evidenced, while interventions for obesity and substance misuse appear to be moderate to very low evidenced. Priority areas for future research include evaluating digital health platforms to support primary NCD prevention and management, and evaluating the impact of policy changes on the prevalence of obesity and substance misuse. Our findings highlight the wide disparity of evidence between high-income countries and LMICs. There is an urgent need for increased, targeted financing to address the research gaps in LMICs.

Abstract
Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Poland and the number of new cases is expected to increase by 28% over the next 10 years. Despite modifications and expenditure growth in the Polish health care system, oncological treatment outcomes are lower comparing to the other European Union countries. Early preventative interventions are effective in reducing the total number of cancers and improving early detection. OnkoLogika is an educational campaign launched in 2016 by the Comprehensive Cancer Centre, aimed at improving cancer awareness. One hundred and twenty students from 25 high schools of the Lower Silesia region in Poland participated in the OnkoLogika program, which consisted of four-segment workshops containing pre-/post-tests, theoretical and practical parts within the project. The mean number of correct answers from the both tests improved after educational intervention (p < 0.001). Students' knowledge increased, especially in relation to risk factors of breast cancer development (416.31% increase), HPV-related cancers (344.81% increase), risk factors and red flag signs of skin melanoma (120.31% and 99.05% increase respectively). Approx. 86% of participants were satisfied with the OnkoLogika with 14% of respondents being dissatisfied and 94% declared increased awareness about cancer prophylaxis. High schools students indicated insufficient time (250; 16.67%) and lack of details considering presented cancers (80; 5.33%) to be the major weaknesses of the program. Nevertheless, 94% of participants would recommend OnkoLogika to a friend. OnkoLogika promotes healthy lifestyle and helps acquire necessary knowledge about chosen cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Women in Oman and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are usually diagnosed with BC at a younger age and more advanced stage, with poor five-year survival. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of breast cancer (BC) related educational programs among female Omani adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six female-only public schools were randomly selected from three governorates of Oman and assigned to the control or interventional group. An Arabic version of the Breast Cancer Awareness Measure questionnaire was used to evaluate students attending grades 10 and 11 at baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks (T1). After T0, the intervention group participated in a one-hour BC education program involving group discussions, a slideshow presentation, leaflets, and online access to program materials and videos. Non-parametric tests were used to compare scores between intervention and control groups and within each group across time (T0 vs. T1). RESULTS A total of 1106 students participated, of which 547 (49.5%) and 559 (50.5%) were allocated to the control and intervention groups, respectively. Recognition of BC risk factors (Z = 18.67; p < 0.001) and symptoms (Z = 20.01; p < 0.001) increased significantly in the intervention group between T0 and T1 and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 27.27; p < 0.001, and U = 25.75; p < 0.001, respectively). Anticipated time to seeking medical help (Z = 18.67; p < 0.001) and barriers to help-seeking (Z = 7.91; p < 0.001) decreased significantly between T0 and T1 in the intervention group and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 15.78; p < 0.001, and U = 3.44; p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION The program increased knowledge of BC risk factors and symptoms and promoted early medical help-seeking among Omani female adolescents. Healthcare strategic planners and policy-makers in Oman and low- and middle-income countries should consider incorporating cancer education programs in the national school curriculum to minimize delays in BC diagnosis and improve the survival rate.

Abstract
The purpose of this review was to establish what cancer education programs have been carried out aimed at adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and what outcomes they achieved. The databases used were MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Web of Science, and the search period was set as 2011-2020. The extracted literature was evaluated for quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tools. The subjects of the analysis were 29 studies: 10 randomized controlled trials and 19 quasi-experimental designs. Regarding the varieties of cancers found in the data, in descending order, 10 documents looked at cervical cancer, 9 looked at cancer in general, and 4 looked at breast cancer. Most studies focused on AYAs exclusively, with just three studies involving their parents simultaneously. Many studies used lecture-based intervention, with information technology-based interventions using websites and cell phones. Topics included in the program were cancer epidemiology, cancer risk factors, cancer warning signs and symptoms, prevention methods, and screening methods. After the intervention, all studies showed statistically significant improvements in at least one outcome measure, which included knowledge and awareness of cancer, health beliefs, and intent to take preventive action, demonstrating a basis for educational intervention. Educating AYAs about cancer at a time when their ways of life are becoming more concrete can be expected to have a positive impact on cancer preventing behaviors in adulthood, increase their parents' awareness of cancer, and have a positive impact on behavior around screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Even though early detection and diagnosis of this disease can reduce mortality considerably, several studies have shown that more than 92% of women are unaware of the risk factors for breast cancer and of breast cancer screening tests. The simultaneous promotion of screening and provision of education can increase community health and reduce medical costs, and students can play a leading role in informing and educating people in society. AIM The present study aims to examine the level of knowledge and attitude of female students in senior high schools in Fasa regarding breast cancer screening. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the random sampling method was applied to survey 350 female high school students, only 311 of whom completed the study. Questionnaires were completed in girls' high schools, and the data was analyzed by SPSS Software, Version 25. RESULTS The results revealed that more than 87% of students were unaware or had incorrect information regarding breast cancer screening. The link between the type of breast cancer information sources and students' general knowledge was significant. Most students were aware of the risk of breast cancer, but they were uninformed of its symptoms, risk factors, and prevention strategies, and students with a family history of breast cancer had a higher score in terms of mammography knowledge than students with no family history of breast cancer, although this difference was not significant (mean ± standard deviation = 0.94 ± 0.90 vs. 0.67 ± 0.81, p = 0.19). CONCLUSION The level of awareness and attitude of Fasa high school girls regarding breast cancer and screening methods is not acceptable. Therefore, it is recommended that educational programs be implemented to increase the awareness of students in schools, so that the number of screenings increases with the institutionalization of this information. Likewise, by transferring information through students to their families, the level of awareness in the whole society will hopefully increase as well.

Abstract
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, with attributable mortality expected to continue increasing over time. High school students are often targeted to enhance awareness of cancer risk factors and symptoms and promote early medical help-seeking behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a cancer education program among Omani adolescents. A total of 12 public schools were randomly selected from three governorates and assigned to either the intervention or control group. Students attending grades 10 and 11 at the selected schools were targeted. The Cancer Awareness Measure tool was used to evaluate knowledge of cancer risk factors and symptoms, perceived barriers to seeking medical help, and anticipated time to consult a doctor for cancer warning symptoms at baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks (T1). After T0, the intervention group participated in a 1-h cancer education program involving a slideshow presentation and group discussion; they also received a leaflet and online access to program materials and videos. A total of 1716 students were enrolled in the study, including 886 (51.6%) assigned to the control group and 830 (48.4%) to the intervention group. Recognition of cancer risk factors (Z = 24.86; p ˂ 0.001) and cancer symptoms (Z = 24.91; p ˂ 0.001) significantly improved in the intervention group between T0 and T1, and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 33.28; p ˂ 0.001, and U = 34.55; p ˂ 0.001, respectively). In addition, anticipated time to help-seeking (Z = 20.15; p ˂ 0.001) and barriers to help-seeking (Z = 10.33; p < 0.001) decreased significantly between T0 and T1, and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 19.00; p ˂ 0.001, and U = 3.58; p < 0.001, respectively). The intervention effectively increased knowledge of cancer risk factors and symptoms and promoted early medical help-seeking behaviors among school-aged Omani adolescents. Integration of cancer education within high school curricula can aid cancer prevention and early intervention efforts. However, additional follow-up is required to confirm the long-term effectiveness of such programs.

Abstract
Despite cancer's devastating effects on health and longevity, and the critical role of health habits formed during childhood and adolescence in its prevention, children's knowledge of contributors to cancer is understudied. In this paper, the first developmental analysis of the literature, we outline relevant theoretical perspectives and three early emerging intuitions about illness evident among preschool children-contagion/germ, contamination, and unhealthy lifestyle theories-and then review research on elementary and secondary school students' awareness of risk factors for cancer in light of these early intuitive theories. Our analysis centers on the 16 studies we could locate, done in seven countries, that allowed calculating the percentages of children of different age groups who mentioned various risk factors in response to open-ended questions or endorsed them in response to structured questions. Awareness of primary known risk factors (led by smoking), lifestyle contributors, and personal factors (genetics and old age) increased with age, while contact myths decreased with age until adolescents began to show awareness of sexual contact as a contributor to certain cancers. In addition, the analysis revealed higher levels of awareness in response to structured questions than in response to open-ended questions; a glaring need for research asking young school-aged children about key risk factors and exploring not only their knowledge but their causal understanding; a need for attention to sociocultural influences; and connections between preschool children's intuitive theories of disease and older children's patterns of belief about cancer that can help guide school-based cancer education.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The rapid increase in the detection rate of thyroid cancer over the past few decades has caused some unexpected economic burdens. However, that of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) seems to have had the opposite trend, which is worthy of further comprehensive exploration. METHODS The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 database was used to identify patients with PTC diagnosed during 2003-2017. The incidence trends were analyzed using joinpoint analysis and an age-period-cohort model. RESULTS The overall PTC incidence rate increased from 9.9 to 16.1 per 100 000 between 2003 and 2017. The joinpoint analysis indicated that the incidence growth rate began to slow down in 2009 (annual percentage change [APC] = 3.1%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.9%-4.4%). After reaching its peak in 2015, it began to decrease by 2.8% (95% CI = -4.6% to -1.0%) per year. The stratified analysis indicated that the incidence patterns of different sexes, age groups, races, and tumor stages and sizes had similar downward trends, including for the localized (APC = -4.5%, 95% CI = -7% to -1.9%) and distant (APC = -1.3%, 95% CI = -2.7% to -.1%) stages, and larger tumors (APC = -4%, 95% CI = -12% to 4.7%). The age-period-cohort model indicated a significant period effect on PTC, which gradually weakened after 2008-2012. The cohort effect indicates that the risk of late birth cohorts is gradually stabilizing and lower than that of early birth cohorts. CONCLUSION The analysis results of the recent downward trend and period effect for the incidence of each subgroup further support the important role of correcting overdiagnosis in reducing the prevalence of PTC. Future research needs to analyze more-recent data to verify these downward trends.
