Abstract
Dramatically sharp resonances manifesting stable negative ion formation characterize Regge pole-calculated low-energy electron elastic total cross sections (TCSs) of heavy multi-electron systems. The novelty of the Regge pole analysis is in the extraction of rigorous and unambiguous negative ion binding energies (BEs), corresponding to the measured electron affinities (EAs) of the investigated multi-electron systems. The measured EAs have engendered the crucial question: is the EA of multi-electron atoms and fullerene molecules identified with the BE of the attached electron in the ground, metastable or excited state of the formed negative ion during a collision? Inconsistencies in the meaning of the measured EAs are elucidated and new EA values for Bk, Cf, Fm, and Lr are presented.

Abstract
We briefly review recent applications of the Regge pole analysis to low-energy 0.0 ≤ E ≤ 10.0 eV electron elastic collisions with large multi-electron atoms and fullerene molecules. We then conclude with a demonstration of the sensitivity of the Regge pole-calculated Ramsauer–Townsend minima and shape resonances to the electronic structure and dynamics of the Bk and Cf actinide atoms, and their first time ever use as novel and rigorous validation of the recent experimental observation that identified Cf as a transitional element in the actinide series (A. Abstract
The rigorous Regge-pole method is used to investigate negative-ion formation in actinide atoms through electron elastic total cross sections (TCSs) calculation. The TCSs are found to be characterized generally by negative-ion formations, shape resonances and Ramsauer-Townsend(R-T) minima, and they exhibit both atomic and fullerene molecular behavior near the threshold. Additionally, a polarization-induced metastable cross section with a deep R-T minimum is identified near the threshold in the Am, Cm and Bk TCSs, which flips over to a shape resonance appearing very close to the threshold in the TCSs for Es, No and Lr. We attribute these new manifestations to size effects and orbital collapse significantly impacting the polarization interaction. From the TCSs unambiguous and reliable ground, metastable and excited states negative-ion binding energies (BEs) for Am−, Cm−, Bk−, Es−, No− and Lr− anions formed during the collisions are extracted and compared with existing electron affinities (EAs) of the atoms. The novelty of the Regge-pole approach is in the extraction of the negative-ion BEs from the TCSs. We conclude that the existing theoretical EAs of the actinide atoms and the recently measured EA of Th correspond to excited anionic BEs.

Abstract
We have discovered a selective and efficient method for the synthesis of previously unknown 1,9-(1',4'-oxathiano)-1,9-dihydro-(C60-Ih)[5,6]fullerene, a compound with the direct attachment of the sulfur atom to the fullerene core. The method is based on the reaction of C60 with 1,2-hydroxythiols in the presence of inorganic bases in air under ultrasonication. The significance of ultrasound has been exemplified with the comparative conventional methods. The title compound has been identified with mass-(MALDI TOF/TOF), one- and two-dimensional NMR 1H and 13C (COSY, HSQC, HMBS), IR, UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. Using the direct EPR method, we have detected radical anion C60- (g = 2.0046 and ΔH = 2 G) as a key reaction intermediate of the sonochemical reaction. Based on the experimental results and quantum chemical calculations, we have proposed a mechanism for the conversion of C60 and 2-mercaptoethanol to the C60-1,4-oxathiane adduct.

Abstract
The fundamental mechanism underlying negative-ion catalysis involves bond-strength breaking in the transition state (TS). Doubly-charged atomic/molecular anions are proposed as novel dynamic tunable catalysts, as demonstrated in water oxidation into peroxide. Density Functional Theory TS calculations have found a tunable energy activation barrier reduction ranging from 0.030 eV to 2.070 eV, with Si2-, Pu2-, Pa2- and Sn2- being the best catalysts; the radioactive elements usher in new application opportunities. C602- significantly reduces the standard C60- TS energy barrier, while graphene increases it, behaving like cationic systems. According to their reaction barrier reduction efficiency, variation across charge states and systems, rank-ordered catalysts reveal their tunable and wide applications, ranging from water purification to biocompatible antiviral and antibacterial sanitation systems.

Abstract
The robust Regge-pole methodology wherein is fully embedded the essential electron-electron correlation effects and the vital core polarization interaction has been used to explore negative ion formation in the large lanthanide Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Hf atoms through the electron elastic total cross sections (TCSs) calculations. These TCSs are characterized generally by dramatically sharp resonances manifesting ground, metastable, and excited negative ion formation during the collisions, Ramsauer-Townsend minima, and shape resonances. The novelty and generality of the Regge-pole approach is in the extraction of the negative ion binding energies (BEs) of complex heavy systems from the calculated electron TCSs. The extracted anionic BEs from the ground state TCSs for Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Hf atoms are 3.51 eV, 3.53 eV, 3.36 eV, 3.49 eV, 4.09 eV and 1.68 eV, respectively. The TCSs are presented and the extracted from the ground; metastable and excited anionic states BEs are compared with the available measured and/or calculated electron affinities. We conclude with a remark on the existing inconsistencies in the meaning of the electron affinity among the various measurements and/or calculations in the investigated atoms and make a recommendation to resolve the ambiguity.

Abstract
We first explore negative-ion formation in fullerenes C44 to C136 through low-energy electron elastic scattering total cross sections calculations using our Regge-pole methodology. Then, the formed negative ions C44ˉ to C136ˉ are used to investigate the catalysis of water oxidation to peroxide and water synthesis from H2 and O2. The exploited fundamental mechanism underlying negative-ion catalysis involves hydrogen bond strength-weakening/breaking in the transition state. Density Functional Theory transition state calculations found C60ˉ optimal for both water and peroxide synthesis, C100ˉ increases the energy barrier the most, and C136ˉ the most effective catalyst in both water synthesis and oxidation to H2O2.

Abstract
We report on high-level coupled-cluster calculations for the anion states of the smallest fullerene C20. Using the state-of-the-art EA-EOM-CCSD method we revealed that the C20- anion has five bound electronic states at the C20 neutral ground-state D3d equilibrium configuration. These are two pairs of 2Eu and 2A2u states and one 2A1g state. The binding energies vary from 2.05 eV for the most bound 2Eu state to <1 meV for the 2A1g state. An analysis in terms of radial and angular density distribution of the excess electron revealed that the two 2Eu/2A2u pairs are valence-like states while 2A1g corresponds to a super-atomic-like (SAMO) state. The valence states of the first 2Eu/2A2u pair were found to be of p-type whereas those of the second pair are of hybrid sp-type. We have also applied a simple model to understand the binding of the excess electron in C20-. The model confirms the existence of only one SAMO state of the s-type for C20-. At the same time, it overestimates the number of the bound valence states of C20-.

Abstract
In this work, we reported the geometrical structures, electronic and spectral properties of the carborane-containing BODIPYs complexes using the density functional theory calculations. In two structures, the calculated main bond lengths and bond angels of structural framework are consistent with X-ray experiment, and the two BODIPYs complexes are thermodynamically and kinetically stable. The strongest DOS band is mainly dominated by the BB and BH σ-bonds of carborane fragment, whereas the π-type MOs on the pyrromethene fragment contribute to the high-energy DOS bands. Analysis of the AdNDP chemical bonding indicates that the carborane cage can be stabilized by eleven delocalized 3c2e and two delocalized 4c2e σ-bonds, while the pyrromethene fragment corresponds to five delocalized 3c2e π-bonds. In addition, the main characteristic peaks of the two simulated IR spectra for the BODIPYs complexes are properly assigned. Hopefully, all these results will be helpful for understanding the electronic structures, and further stimulate the study on the biological and medical applications.

Abstract
CF3 -derivatized fullerenes prove once again to be promising scaffolds for regioselective fullerene functionalization: now with the smallest possible addends-hydrogen atoms. Hydrogenation of Cs -C70 (CF3 )8 and C1 -C70 (CF3 )10 by means of reduction with Zn/Cu couple in the presence of water proceeds regioselectively, yielding only one major isomer of C70 (CF3 )8 H2 and only two for C70 (CF3 )10 H2 , whose addition patterns are combined in the only abundant isomer of C70 (CF3 )10 H4 . The observed selectivity is governed by the electronic structure of trifluoromethylated substrates. Interestingly, we discovered that Clar's theory can be utilized to predict the regiochemistry of functionalization, and we look forward to testing it on forthcoming cases of derivatization of pre-functionalized fullerene building blocks.

Abstract
In the present work, the density-functional theory calculations were performed on C20 hydroxylated fullerene. B3LYP functionals with 6-31G(d,p) basis set were utilized to gain insight into the bonding characters and intramolecular interactions of hydroxyl groups adsorbed on the cage. Interestingly, we observed that the C20 cage has the bonding patterns with spherical orbitals configuration [1S(2)1P(6)1D(10)1F(2)], and the adsorbed hydroxyl groups significantly affect the chemical bonding of the cage surface. Analysis of vertical electron affinities and vertical ionization potentials indicates that the polyhydroxylated derivative with eight hydroxyl groups is more stable than others. The intramolecular interaction of these derivatives considered here reveals that the more the hydroxyl groups in derivatives, the stronger the interaction in stabilizing structures. On the basis of theoretical studies, the hydroxyl groups largely enhance the infrared intensities, especially for the polyhydroxylated derivatives.

Abstract
High-resolution photoelectron imaging and spectroscopy of cold C₆₀⁻ anions are reported using a newly built photoelectron imaging apparatus coupled with an electrospray ionization source and a temperature-controlled cryogenic ion trap. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained for the detachment transition from the ground state of C₆₀⁻ to that of C60 at various detachment wavelengths from 354.84 nm to 461.35 nm. The electron affinity of C60 is accurately measured to be 2.6835 ± 0.0006 eV. Numerous unexpected vibrational excitations are observed in the photoelectron spectra due to the Jahn-Teller effect in C₆₀⁻ and Hertzberg-Teller vibronic coupling in both C₆₀⁻ and C60. Both the relative intensities of vibrational peaks and their photoelectron angular distributions provide evidence for the vibronic couplings. The observed p-wave-like behavior in the angular distribution of the 0₀⁰ transition suggests that the electron is detached from an s-type orbital.

Abstract
The present paper reports spectroscopic and theoretical insights on ground state complexation of a designed monoporphyrin, 1, with C60 and C70 in toluene. The central interest of the present investigations is the selectivity in binding constant (K) of the fullerene-1 complexes in solution. The ground state interaction between fullerenes and 1 is first evidenced from UV-Vis measurements. Steady state fluorescence experiment reveals efficient quenching of the excited singlet state of 1 in presence of both C60 and C70. Average K values, viz., K(av), for the complexes of C60 and C70 with 1 are determined to be 1620 and 30330 dm(3) mol(-1), respectively. The magnitude of K(av) suggests that 1 preferentially binds C70 in comparison to C60. Time resolved emission measurements establish that C70-1 complex is stabilized much more in comparison to C60-1 system in terms of charge separation process. Ab initio calculations in vacuo substantiate the strong binding between C70 and 1 in terms of heat of formation values of the respective complex, and at the same time, determine the orientation of bound guest (here C70) with the molecular plane of 1.

Abstract
The local electron affinity (EA(L)) and the local ionization energy (IE(L)) are successfully used for predicting properties of closed-shell species for drug design and for nanoelectronics. Here the respective unrestricted Hartree-Fock variants of EA(L) and IE(L), i.e., the unrestricted local electron affinity (UHF-EA(L)) and ionization energy (UHF-IE(L)), have been shown to be useful for predicting properties of open-shell species. UHF-EA(L) and UHF-IE(L) have been applied for explaining unique electronic properties of an exemplary nanomaterial carbon peapod. It is also demonstrated that UHF-EA(L) is useful for predicting and better understanding reactivity of radicals related to alkanes activation.

Abstract
We have obtained experimental photo-double- and photo-triple-detachment cross sections for the fullerene negative ion using Advanced Light Source photons of 17-90 eV. The cross sections are 2 and 2.5 times larger than those for C60 and appear to be compressed and shifted in photon energy as compared to C60. Our analysis reveals that the additional electron in C60- primarily produces screening which is responsible for the modification of the spectrum. Both screening effects, the shift and the compression, can be quantitatively accounted for by a linear transformation of the energy axis. Applying the transformation allows us to map the neutral and negative ion cross sections onto each other, pointing out the close relationship of correlated few-electron dynamics in neutral and negatively charged extended systems. In contrast, dynamics of neutral and negatively charged atoms or small molecules are typically not closely related.

Abstract
Structure, electronic property and vibrational spectroscopy of C(24)-glycine and Gd@C(24)-glycine were systematically explored using the hybrid DFT-B3LYP functional. The interaction between empty C(24) cage and the smallest amino acid (glycine) was also investigated. It was found that the glycine molecule is energetically favorable to interact with the Mid-site on the C(24) cage through the amino nitrogen active site, rather than Top-site. The endohedral Gd atom increases the volume of the cage by around 6.7-9.8%. Analysis of frontier molecular orbitals reveals that the Gd@C(24)-glycine has the low-kinetic stability, being consistent with its thermodynamic property reflected by dissociation energy. We also see that the VIE and VEA of empty C(24) cage are slightly affected by absorbed glycine and endohedral Gd atom. Additionally, the assignments of simulated IR spectra are explored. The work may provide a theoretical reference for further application related structurally to potential antitumour activity.

Abstract
The influence of electron attachment on the stability of the mono- and dihydrogenated buckminsterfullerene C(60) was studied using density functional theory and semiempirical molecular orbital techniques. We have also assessed the reliability of computationally accessible methods that are important for investigating the reactivity of graphenic species and surfaces in general. The B3LYP and M06L functionals with the 6-311+G(d,p) basis set and MNDO/c are found to be the best methods for describing the electron affinities of C(60) and C(60)H(2) . It is shown that simple frontier molecular orbital analyses at both the AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G(d) levels are useful for predicting the most favourable position of protonation of C(60)H(-) , that is, formation of the kinetically controlled product 1,9-dihydro[60]fullerene, which is also the thermodynamically controlled product, in agreement with experimental and previous theoretical studies. We have shown that reduction of exo- and endo-C(60)H makes them more stable in contrast to the reduction of the exo,exo-1,9-C(60)H(2) , reduced forms of which decompose more readily, in agreement with experimental electrochemical studies. However, most other dihydro[60]fullerenes are stabilized by reduction and the regioselectivity of addition is predicted to decrease as the less stable isomers are stabilized more by the addition of electrons than the two most stable ones (1,9 and 1,7).

Abstract
A systematic study on the geometrical structures and electronic properties of C(68)X(4) (X=H, F, and Cl) fullerene compounds has been carried out on the basis of density functional theory. In all classical C(68)X(4) isomers with two adjacent pentagons and one quasifullerene isomer [C(s):C(68)(f)] containing a heptagon in the framework, the C(s):0064 isomers are most favorable in energy. The addition reaction energies of C(68)X(4) (C(s):0064) are high exothermic, and C(68)F(4) is more thermodynamically accessible. The C(68)X(4) (C(s):0064) possess strong aromatic character, with nucleus independent chemical shifts ranging from -22.0 to -26.1 ppm. Further investigations on electronic properties indicate that C(68)F(4) and C(68)Cl(4) could be excellent electron-acceptors for potential photonic/photovoltaic applications in consequence of their large vertical electron affinities (3.29 and 3.15 eV, respectively). The Mulliken charge populations and partial density of states are also calculated, which show that decorating C(68) fullerene with various X atoms will cause remarkably different charge distributions in C(68)X(4) (C(s):0064) and affect their electronic properties distinctly. Finally, the infrared spectra of the most stable C(68)X(4) (C(s):0064) molecules are simulated to assist further experimental characterization.

Abstract
A method is presented to test whether the conversion of the mass spectrum of a polydisperse analyte to its molecular mass distribution is quantitative. Mixtures of samples with different average molecular masses, coupled with a Taylor's expansion mathematical formalism, were used to ascertain the reliability of molecular mass distributions derived from mass spectra. Additionally, the method describes how the molecular mass distributions may be corrected if the degree of mass bias is within certain defined limits. This method was demonstrated on polydisperse samples of C(60) fullerenes functionalized with ethylpyrrolidine groups measured by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry; however, it is applicable to any polydisperse analyte and mass spectrometric method as long as spectrum resolution allows individual oligomers to be identified. Mass spectra of the derivatized fullerenes taken in positive ion mode were shown to give an accurate measurement of the molecular mass distribution while those taken in negative ion mode were not. Differences in the mechanisms for ion formation are used to explain the discrepancy.
