Abstract
Benefits of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on a number of clinical disorders, including autoimmune diseases, are widely reported in the literature. One major dietary source of PUFA are fish, particularly the small oily fish, like anchovy, sardine, mackerel and others. Unfortunately, fish (particularly the large, top-predator fish like swordfish) are also a source of pollutants, including the heavy metals. One relevant heavy metal is mercury, a known environmental trigger of autoimmunity that is measurable inside the thyroid. There are a number of interactions between the omega-3 PUFA and thyroid hormones, even at the level of the thyroid hormone transport proteins. Concerning the mechanisms behind the protection from/amelioration of autoimmune diseases, including thyroiditis, that are caused by the omega-3 PUFA, one can be the decreased production of chemokines, a decrease that was reported in the literature for other nutraceuticals. Recent studies point also to the involvement of resolvins. The intracellular increase in resolvins is associated with the tissue protection from inflammation that was observed in experimental animals after coadministration of omega-3 PUFA and thyroid hormone. After having presented data on fish consumption at the beginning, we conclude our review by presenting data on the market of the dietary supplements/nutraceuticals. The global omega-3 products market was valued at USD 2.10 billion in 2020, and was projected to go up at a compound annual growth rate of 7.8% from 2020 to 2028. Among supplements, fish oils, which are derived mainly from anchovies, are considered the best and generally safest source of omega-3. Taking into account (i) the anti-autoimmunity and anti-cancer properties of the omega-3 PUFA, (ii) the increasing incidence of both autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid cancer worldwide, (iii) the predisposing role for thyroid cancer exerted by autoimmune thyroiditis, and (iv) the risk for developing metabolic and cardiovascular disorders conferred by both elevated/trendwise elevated serum TSH levels and thyroid autoimmunity, then there is enough rationale for the omega-3 PUFA as measures to contrast the appearance and/or duration of Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as to correct the slightly elevated serum TSH levels of subclinical hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a heterogeneous disease with unknown cause(s). CFS symptoms resemble a hypothyroid state, possibly secondary to chronic (low-grade) (metabolic) inflammation. We studied 98 CFS patients (21-69 years, 21 males) and 99 age- and sex-matched controls (19-65 years, 23 males). We measured parameters of thyroid function, (metabolic) inflammation, gut wall integrity and nutrients influencing thyroid function and/or inflammation. Most remarkably, CFS patients exhibited similar thyrotropin, but lower free triiodothyronine (FT3) (difference of medians 0.1%), total thyroxine (TT4) (11.9%), total triiodothyronine (TT3) (12.5%), %TT3 (4.7%), sum activity of deiodinases (14.4%), secretory capacity of the thyroid gland (14.9%), 24-h urinary iodine (27.6%), and higher % reverse T3 (rT3) (13.3%). FT3 below the reference range, consistent with the "low T3 syndrome," was found in 16/98 CFS patients vs. 7/99 controls (OR 2.56; 95% confidence interval = 1.00-6.54). Most observations persisted in two sensitivity analyses with more stringent cutoff values for body mass index, high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and WBC. We found possible evidence of (chronic) low-grade metabolic inflammation (ferritin and HDL-C). FT3, TT3, TT4, and rT3 correlated positively with hsCRP in CFS patients and all subjects. TT3 and TT4 were positively related to hsCRP in controls. Low circulating T3 and the apparent shift from T3 to rT3 may reflect more severely depressed tissue T3 levels. The present findings might be in line with recent metabolomic studies pointing at a hypometabolic state. They resemble a mild form of "non-thyroidal illness syndrome" and "low T3 syndrome" experienced by a subgroup of hypothyroid patients receiving T4 monotherapy. Our study needs confirmation and extension by others. If confirmed, trials with, e.g., T3 and iodide supplements might be indicated.

Abstract
To explore the possible involvement of a relationship between steroids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in thyroid cancer, we studied the concentration levels of 21 endogenous urinary androgens and glucocorticoids, and 6 urinary PUFAs in female patients with thyroid cancer (n=29, 49.4+/-12.6 years) and in normal female subjects (n=20, 48.3+/-11.9 years). Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in selected ion-monitoring mode, we performed quantification of androgens, glucocorticoids, and PUFAs. In the case of the urinary androgens and the glucocorticoids, the concentration of androgens was not altered between patients with thyroid cancer and normal controls. However, the concentration of glucocorticoid significantly decreased in patients with thyroid cancer compared to that of the normal controls. Also, in case of urinary PUFAs, the precursor of cholesterol, the concentration of linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were decreased in patient with thyroid cancer (P<0.05). In this results, it can be concluded that the glucocorticoids milieu induced from the decreasing urinary concentration of DHA may exert an important influence upon thyroid cancer. Consequently, the change of urinary glucocorticoids concentration may play an important role in thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Split injection-related discrimination can be a source of inaccuracy and imprecision in quantitative capillary gas chromatographic profiling methods for compounds with relatively big differences in boiling points, such as the methyl esters of medium- and long-chain fatty acids prepared from biological materials. We systematically investigated a standard containing equal masses of saturated fatty acid methyl esters, with chain lengths from C5 to C26, under different injection conditions, including injection temperature, sample volume and split ratio. Day-to-day performance was studied under one set of conditions. Normalized peak areas, reciprocal response factors, using either C17 or C23 as an internal standard, and 'bracketed' reciprocal response factors (peak area of each analyte divided by half the sum of the peak areas of two adjacent esters were calculated. In all experiments the bracketed reciprocal response factors were found to be closest to unity with the lowest coefficients of variation.

Abstract
In addition to their usual diet, nine Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic men and ten male control subjects took 20 g d, alpha-tocopheryl acetate enriched evening primrose oil (14.45 g 18:2c,omega 6, 1.73 g 18:3c,omega 6, 400 mg d,alpha-tocopheryl acetate) daily for one week. At start, diabetic patients had more 14:0, 15:0 and 18:2c,omega 6, and less 16:0, 16:1c,omega 7, 18:1c,omega 7, 18:3c,omega 6, 20:3c,omega 9, 20:3c,omega 6, 20:4c,omega 6 and 22:6c,omega 3 in plasma, erythrocytes and/or platelets. Furthermore, they had lower 16:1c,omega 7/16:0, 18:1c,omega 7/16:0, and 20:4c,omega 6/20:3c,omega 6 ratios and a higher 20:3c,omega 6/18:3c,omega 6 ratio. In diabetic patients, alpha-tocopherol levels in erythrocytes were lower, whereas those in plasma were normal. In both groups, oil intake changed fatty acid profiles. Most markedly, 20:3c,omega 6 increased, whereas the ratios 20:3c,omega 6/18:3c,omega 6 and 20:4c,omega 6/20:3c,omega 6 decreased. 20:4c,omega 6 increased in control subjects, but not in diabetic patients. Erythrocytes and platelets responded differently in their fatty acid profiles. alpha-tocopherol rose in plasma and, although less for diabetic patients, in erythrocytes. In diabetic patients as well as in control subjects, erythrocyte count, haemoglobin level, mean corpuscular haemoglobin content and concentration increased and glycosylated haemoglobin percentage decreased without an apparent decline in blood glucose levels. Abstract
Although a substantial literature confirms the abnormal flow properties of diabetic blood, only in a few papers has the vasculitis of diabetic neuropathy been considered to have a hemorheological cause. It is proposed that the pathogenesis of nerve lesions involves an interaction between the specialized nerve vascular system and focal ischemic lesions resulting from rheologically induced stasis. The proposition is extended into other conditions with abnormal blood rheology such as hypothyroidism, uremia, dysglobulinemia, polyarteritis nodosa, and lepromatous leprosy. It is concluded that the treatment of such polyneuropathies should include an agent which would improve the flow properties of the blood.

Abstract
The relative concentration of fatty acids in plasma and platelet phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) was determined in 11 patients with overt hypothyroidism (S-TSH greater than 80 mU/l) before and after 1-thyroxine substitution therapy. During therapy, the linoleic (C18:2) acid content decreased (p less than 0.01) whereas longer and more desaturated fatty acids, including arachidonic (C20:4) acid, increased (p less than 0.01) in plasma phospholipids. Also, oleic (C18:1) acid decreased (p less than 0.01) while the major saturated fatty acids, palmitic (C16:0) and stearic (C18:0) acids, were stable. In platelet membrane phospholipids, a similar reciprocal change in the relative content of linoleic (C18:2) and arachidonic (C20:4) acids, respectively, occurred. In plasma, these changes in linoleic and arachidonic acids were found to be inversely correlated (r = 0.56, p less than 0.05). The change in the linoleic acid content in plasma was also correlated to that in platelets (r = 0.64, p less than 0.05). Thus, we have found that thyroid hormones positively influence the conversion of linoleic acid to longer and more polyunsaturated fatty acids in a way that affects fatty acid composition not only in plasma but also in platelet membrane phospholipids.

Abstract
Twelve normal men received twice their estimated basal energy requirement by a carbohydrate solution via a nasogastric catheter during 48 hours, followed by a seven-hour fast. Subsequently, in nine of them 0.5 mg epinephrine was given subcutaneously under ongoing fasting. During hyperalimentation, serum triglycerides, phospholipids, total and free cholesterol, phospholipids/free cholesterol ratio, and plasma free fatty acids decreased, whereas the percentage of free cholesterol increased. During fasting and subsequent epinephrine administration triglycerides and free fatty acids rose without reaching basal levels. Plasma and red blood cell (RBC) fatty acid composition already changed from two hours after the start of the feeding. Most markedly, a steady decrease in RBC 18:2c, omega 6, amounting to more than 17% of the basal value at the end of the observation period was found. Neither in plasma, nor in RBC a concomitant appearance of 20:3c, omega 9 was seen. In RBC, the relative amounts of the saturated fatty acids increased, whereas those of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased. RBC content of total fatty acids decreased and that of cholesterol increased. The ratios 16:1c, omega 7/16:0 and 18:3c, omega 6/18:2c, omega 6 in plasma, and 20:3c, omega 6/18:2c, omega 6 in plasma and RBC increased, whereas those of 18:1c, omega 7/16:1c, omega 7 and 20:3c, omega 6/18:3c, omega 6 in plasma decreased. After 48 hours feeding serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase levels were moderately increased and rose further during fasting. Thus, continuous enteral hyperalimentation by carbohydrates alone rapidly induces profound changes in serum-, plasma-, and RBC lipid compositions and serum parameters of hepatic function.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
