A developmental model for the evolution of language and intelligence in early hominids

This paper presents a model for the nature and adaptive significance of intelligence and language in early hominids based on comparative developmental, ecological, and neurological data. We propose that the common ancestor of the great apes and man displayed rudimentary forms of late sensorimotor and early preoperational intelligence similar to that of one- to four-year-old children. These abilities arose as adaptations for extractive foraging with tools, which requires a long postweaning apprenticeship. They were elaborated in the first hominids with the shift to primary dependence on this feeding strategy. These first hominids evolved a protolanguage, similar to that of two-year-old human children, with which they could describe the nature and location of food and request help in obtaining it. The descendents of the first hominids displayed intuitive intelligence, similar to that of four- to seven-year-old children, which arose as an adaptation for complex hunting involving aimed-missile throwing, stone-tool manufacture, animal butchery, food division, and shelter construction. The comparative developmental and paleontological data are consistent with the hypothesis that the stages of development of intelligence and language and their neural substrates in our species recapitulate the stages of their evolution.

The reaction of primary sensory neurons to peripheral nerve injury with particular emphasis on transganglionic changes

This paper reviews light- and electron microscopic, histochemical and physiological evidence which demonstrate that peripheral nerve injury in mammals is followed by profound structural and functional changes in the central terminals of the affected primary sensory neurons. Available evidence indicates that at least some of these so-called transganglionic changes are the result of ganglion cell degeneration and death, although other mechanisms are probably in effect as well. Existing data suggest that this ganglion cell death does not effect all types of ganglion cells equally, but do not permit a clearcut answer to the question of which kinds of ganglion cells are affected more than others. Results from studies with microtubule inhibitors and antibodies to nerve growth factor are compatible with the notion that depletion of retrogradely transported trophic factors is involved in the production of certain transganglionic changes. This issue needs further examination, however. Physiological studies indicate marked alterations in certain primary afferent synaptic connections after peripheral nerve lesions. So far, these changes have not been satisfactorily correlated with the structural changes induced by similar lesions. Further studies on the structural and functional response of primary sensory neurons to peripheral nerve injury are likely to contribute to the understanding of the frequent failure to regain normal sensory functions after peripheral nerve lesions in man, as well as of the basic aspects of lesion-induced changes in general in the peripheral and central nervous system.

Especial considerations for neurotoxicological research

In recent years, there has been much impetus toward a definition of behavior in terms of underlying biological events. Such correlations have been attempted in several areas ranging from learning and memory to neurological disease. Increased information concerning the relation between behavior and neurobiological mechanisms is especially important in the area of neurotoxicology. It is often abnormal behavior that is a first sign of exposure to a neurotoxic agent and such changes may give clues as to the anatomical or chemical sites of attack on the nervous system. These clues might also lead to the development of a therapeutic treatment as to the development of tests designed to reveal exposure to a toxic agent at levels below those causing gross behavioral change. Unfortunately, there is a relatively small amount of literature reporting on both behavioral and biological disturbances caused by a toxic agent in the same experimental animal. However, a variety of methodological advances combined with a growing interest in neurotoxicology is gradually changing this. Increased information concerning the role of defined nerve pathways and the means of action of their chemical constituents offers an opportunity to bring about a deepening understanding of neurotoxic events. This review will suggest how new pharmacological findings can be applied to neurotoxicology. Examples of human and animal exposure to toxic materials will be used and current problems will be shown to be major determinants of future research directions.

Morphometric analysis of the effects of exenteration and enucleation on the development of third and sixth cranial nerves in the rat

The effects on rat cranial nerve growth of removing various amounts of extraocular muscle was studied using morphometric techniques. Growth in the third cranial nerves was found to be severely retarded when most of the muscle tissue was removed. By contrast, removal of the eye alone, leaving extraocular muscles relatively intact, was found to have little or no effect on the subsequent growth of third and sixth cranial nerve fibers and of extraocular muscle fibers. This conclusion could be drawn only through the application of statistical methods which take into account several generally unrecognized facts: frequency distributions of axon circumference and myelin sheath thickness are highly variable from nerve to nerve even in normal rats, which often have more large fibers in left than in right nerves. The bimodal nature of peripheral nerve fiber distributions precludes the use of such parametric tests as the commonly and inappropriately used t-test, but a non-parametric test such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, extensively used in these studies, is inadequate for data comprising several sets of distributions to be compared. The application of the analysis of variance to some of the data and the merits of the procedure are discussed.
