Abstract
The study investigated the effects of seawater acclimation at constant and diel temperatures on the growth, osmoregulation, and branchial phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The fish (initial weight, 62.28 ± 0.41 g) were reared at a constant 13.0 °C (CT) or with a diel cycle of either 13.0 ± 1.0 °C (VT2) or 13.0 ± 2.0 °C (VT4) for 6 weeks, and subsequently subjected to seawater acclimation. Diel temperature variations (of up to 4 °C) did not affect the growth rate of rainbow trout maintained in freshwater, but alleviated the impairment on the growth after seawater challenge. Under all temperature conditions, rainbow trout were well prepared to seawater acclimation. The diel cyclic temperature resulted in fish with reduced fluctuations in plasma electrolyte levels, branchial Na+-K+ ATPase activity, and plasma osmolality. In freshwater, the sum of the monounsaturated fatty acids was significantly higher in the VT4 relative to CT and VT2 treatment. Conversely, the sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids was significantly lower in the VT4 fish. After seawater transfer, the branchial PLFA profiles of the fish significantly changed, but those in CT and VT2 did not recover afterwards (the degree of unsaturation was downregulated). The PLFA composition of fish in the VT4 treatment appeared to be steadier under seawater acclimation. This study suggests that a diel cyclic temperature (13.0 ± 2.0 °C) can alleviate the impairment of growth, enhance osmoregulation capability, and improve the stability of the branchial PLFA composition in rainbow trout after seawater acclimation.

Abstract
This study assessed the responses of vitamin-D3 intraperitoneally injected to Rohu, Labeo rohita @ of 0 IU/kg bw (only solvent), 100 IU/kg bw and 500 IU/kg bw reared in 20 and 40 ppm of calcium (Ca) enriched water. The cellular changes in Corpuscles of Stannius (CS) gland, serum Ca, and inorganic phosphate (Pi) level were analysed up to the 60th day. Rohu administered with 100 IU/kg bw D3 and exposed to 40 ppm Ca-rich water exhibited notable hyperplasia of CS compared with their control groups. Notable changes with high serum Ca level (13.87 ± 0.3 mg/dl) was detected on the 5th day in fish exposed to 40 ppm Ca-rich water, while related values attained (13.74 ± 0.1 mg/dl) only after 7 days in 20 ppm Ca-rich water of 500 IU/kg bw vitamin D3 injection. Similarly, high serum Pi level (7.66 ± 0.2 mg/dl) in 40 ppm Ca injected with D3 at 500 IU/kg bw. The results demonstrated that the Ca homeostasis of Labeo rohita is influenced by intra-peritoneal vitamin D3. Progressive studies should be conducted by increasing the dose of vitamin D3 to investigate optimum dose/supplement in feed for commercially important aquaculture teleost Labeo rohita for maximum and sustainable absorption of Ca from the variable water Calcium levels to maintain Ca2+ homeostasis.

Abstract
Freshwater mud eel, Amphipnous cuchia, were injected intraperitoneally daily with 100 ng of vitamin D3/100 g body weight and maintained in media containing either no calcium or different calcium concentrations. The eels were killed after 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 days following the treatment and their serum calcium levels were measured. The ultimobranchial glands were fixed and processed using the routine paraffin method for histological studies. The results of the present study indicate that vitamin D3 can induce hypercalcaemia in eels kept in different calcium environments. Also, the ultimobranchial glands became hyperactive following vitamin D3 treatment. It is concluded that in mud eels, the gland has a calcium-regulating function.

Abstract
Renal function was observed in freshwater North American eels (Anguilla rostrata LeSueur) 2 weeks after the removal of the corpuscles of Stannius. There was a positive linear correlation between glomerular filtration rates and urine flow rates in both sham-operated and stanniectomized eels but there was no difference in slope or elevation between the two groups nor did urine flow rates ever exceed glomerular filtration rates. Osmolar clearance and free-water clearance were unchanged following stanniectomy. Plasma Ca2+ and K+ concentrations increased and plasma Mg2+, phosphate, Na+ and Cl- concentrations decreased following stanniectomy. Plasma ultrafilterable Ca increased and ultrafilterable Mg decreased after stanniectomy but neither changed relative to its total plasma concentration. Stanniectomy was followed by a decreased renal tubular reabsorption of Mg2+ relative to the amount filtered (CMg/CIn); the same applies to CNa/CIn. Even though the filtered load of Ca increased in conjunction with the predictable hypercalcemia, there was no change in the fraction of filtered Ca reabsorbed. Net tubular secretion of phosphate was observed in both sham-operated and stanniectomized eels together with a slight increase in Cphos/CIn following stanniectomy. Some or all of these changes in plasma electrolytes and/or the modified renal transport of Na+, Mg2+ and possibly phosphate may be caused by the changes in cardiovascular function that were recently shown to follow stanniectomy.

Abstract
Transfer of the stenohaline catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis from tap water (TW) to deionized water (DW) resulted in an increase in the glomerular filtration rate, urine volume and osmolar and free water clearance. In a closed system, where the DW was renewed only once a day, no change in the plasma osmolality was evident for up to 14 days. When DW was renewed four times a day for 25 days, a significant reduction in the plasma osmolality was observed within 24h. When the fish were transferred back to TW, plasma osmolality increased to normal freshwater level within 24h. These observations suggest the existence of highly efficient branchial mechanisms for active uptake of salts from an exceedingly dilute ambient medium. The fact that prolactin-secreting cells as well as corticotrophs in the pituitary of the fish in DW were highly stimulated suggests the involvement of the hormones in the adaptive responses of the catfish to DW.

Abstract
A rainbow trout fry bioassay based on 45Ca uptake was used to compare the effects of pure coho salmon teleocalcin (TC) and several synthetic peptide fragments of TC. Calcium uptake in the fry exhibited a cycle, with an amplitude variation of 3.3 to 48.8 mumol.kg-1.hr-1 and a periodicity of 8 to 21 days. The N-terminal 1-20 amino acid peptides of both eel and salmon TC significantly inhibited 45Ca uptake at the high point of the calcium uptake cycle (up to 75%), although the effective doses of the peptides on a molar basis were 20 to 200 times that of the intact molecule. In contrast, the C-terminal fragment of eel TC (amino acids 202-231) did not have an inhibitory effect on calcium uptake. Instead, it significantly enhanced 45Ca uptake in trout fry (up to sixfold) at the low point of the calcium uptake cycle.

Abstract
The response of plasma prolactin (PRL) to manipulations of plasma calcium were investigated in coho salmon. Injection of 3.16 mumol EGTA/10 g body weight (to reduce the plasma calcium activity) resulted in significantly higher plasma PRL levels. Lower doses of EGTA (1.06 and 2.13 mumol/10 g body wt) had no effect on plasma PRL concentrations. Injection of 8.75 mumol CaCl2/10 g body wt (but not 4.35 mumol CaCl2/10 g body wt) resulted in significantly lower plasma PRL levels. Plasma total calcium and sodium concentrations were significantly elevated following three daily injections of 0.5 micrograms/g pure chum salmon PRL. This is the first report of a role for salmon PRL in calcium homeostasis of Oncorhynchus.

Abstract
The corpuscles of Stannius (CS) of the cichlid Oreochromis mossambicus (formerly Sarotherodon mossambicus) were studied in relation to sexual maturation and plasma calcium levels. After sexual maturation, the CS are enlarged in female fish, because of an increase in size and number of the type-1 cells. During the ovarian cycle, the size of the CS increases in parallel with the growth of the ovaries. Concurrently, plasma total calcium increases markedly until spawning. This increase is mainly accounted for by calcium bound to proteins (vitellogenins), but the ultrafiltrable calcium fraction is also slightly higher than in males. Ovariectomy is followed by a reduction in the size of the CS, mainly a result of involution of the type-1 cells, and by a reduction in plasma calcium to levels typical for males. Gonadectomy in males does not affect size or ultrastructure of the CS, or plasma calcium levels. Since the type-1 cells of the CS are the presumptive source of a hypocalcemic hormone, we conclude that activation of the CS during the female reproductive cycle is a response to elevated calcium levels that accompany ovarian maturation. We suggest that the CS respond in particular to the elevated ultrafiltrable or ionic calcium levels.

Abstract
In the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus prolactin cell activity is inversely related to the osmolarity and the Ca2+ concentration of the ambient water. Prolactin cell activity was estimated, at the end of a 3-week experimental period, by determination of the rate of prolactin synthesis during incubation of the rostral parts of the pituitary gland, in the presence of [3H]lysine. Since the secretory activity of isolated prolactin cells is known to be inversely related to the osmolarity of the incubation medium, the possibility was investigated that the effects of changes in ionic composition of the ambient water on prolactin secretion in vivo are mediated by changes in osmolarity of the blood plasma. No support was found for this hypothesis. In fish exposed to high water osmolarities prolactin cell activity was reduced, while plasma osmolarity increased. In contrast, at high Ca2+ concentrations of the water, when prolactin secretion was inhibited to a similar extent, plasma osmolarity was significantly reduced. Although direct effects of plasma osmolarity on prolactin cells cannot be excluded completely, it is unlikely that plasma osmolarity is the predominant factor in the control of prolactin cell activity in situ. The physiological significance of the capacity of isolated prolactin cells to respond to changes in osmolarity of the ambient medium--a capacity shared with some other endocrine cell types--is therefore unclear.

Abstract
Infusions of ovine prolactin for 10 days induced hypercalcemia in unfed American eels, Anguilla rostrata LeSueur, that tentatively was related to stimulation of branchial Ca2+-uptake mechanisms. Analysis of ATPase activities in the plasma membranes of the branchial epithelium in prolactin treated eels showed a specific stimulation of high-affinity Ca2+-ATPase. The results of this study form further evidence that the high-affinity Ca2+-ATPase activity represents the Ca2+-pump of the branchial epithelium.

Abstract
In Sarotherodon mossambicus prolactin cell activity is related to ambient Ca2+ levels, and prolactin has hypercalcemic activity in this species. To study whether prolactin has a direct action on calcium metabolism, or whether prolactin's relationship with calcium is indirect and connected with control of gill permeability, the effects of external Ca2+ and Mg2+ on prolactin secretion and gill permeability were compared. It appeared that high external Mg2+ was associated with reduced prolactin secretion, even though high Mg2+ resulted in a marked hypocalcemia. Exposure of fish to high Ca2+ levels led to hypercalcemia. Both high Mg2+ and high Ca2+ concentrations in the ambient water reduced the osmotic water permeability of the gills. These results represent further evidence that prolactin secretion in S. mossambicus may be affected by any external factor that interferes with branchial permeability. It is concluded that prolactin's main function in this species is connected with control of branchial permeability rather than calcium metabolism, although internal calcium may be implicated in permeability control.

Abstract
The activity of prolactin (PRL) cells was investigated in goldfish gradually adapted to diluted (30%) artificial seawater (ASW) or directly immersed in 23% ASW and in similar saline solutions free of calcium. When Ca2+ is omitted, PRL cells appear slightly more active than those in saline solutions with calcium, nuclear areas having intermediate values between those in freshwater (FW) and those in diluted SW. Nuclear areas are also slightly larger in Mg-free SW. Other signs of stimulation are not apparent. These data are compared to those obtained in other teleost species. The lack of stimulation in PRL cells of goldfish adapted to deionized water (DW) suggests that calcium plays a minor role in controlling prolactin secretion in this teleost.

Abstract
The parathyroid glands of Desmognathus monticola are located in the subdermal connective tissue of the neck. Although they are smaller than previously described urodele parathyroid glands, their histological structure is similar. Parathyroidectomy caused a decrease in plasma calcium concentrations within 4 days following the operation. By Days 12 and 21, however, the plasma calcium levels of parathyroidectomized animals were not significantly different from those of sham-operated animals. Thus, the parathyroid gland of this species contains a hypercalcemic principle, but the recovery from hypocalcemia suggests that some hypercalcemic mechanism other than the parathyroid system must be involved in calcium homeostasis.

Abstract
The ultrastructure of the prolactin (PRL) cells of Gambusia was studied in animals kept in deionized water (EDes) and in EDes supplemented either with Ca2+ (10,2 and 15,3 mM) or with Na+ (10,2 and 15,3 mM). In environments supplemented with CaCl2 the maximal survival was 40 days. The stimulation of PRL cells was similar to that described in EDes. On the contrary, in environments supplemented with NaCl, 50% of the animals are still alive after 45 days. PRL cells are slightly stimulated and their ultrastructural aspect is similar to that observed in controls kept in freshwater. The significance of these results is discussed in relation with our present knowledge of the pituitary control of osmoregulation in teleost fish.

Abstract
The effects of hypophysectomy on the plasma ionic and osmotic balance in juvenile rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) kept in 1/3 sea water for various periods were studied. Hypophysectomy caused a decrease in the plasma levels of ionized calcium and chloride within a week after the operation. At 2-5 weeks after hypophysectomy, the plasma levels of ionized calcium and chloride were still significantly lower in hypophysectomized fish when compared to sham-operated controls. Hypophysectomy had no effects on the plasma levels of sodium, total calcium, total magnesium, inorganic phosphate, plasma proteins, or plasma osmolality. When 1/3 sea water adapted (1-4 weeks), hypophysectomized and sham-operated fish were exposed to fresh water for 2 weeks, the plasma levels of ionized calcium, chloride, sodium, and plasma osmolality were significantly lower in hypophysectomized fish when compared to sham-operated fish, while the plasma levels of total calcium, total magnesium, and proteins were higher. No effects were noted on the plasma levels of potassium and inorganic phosphate. The presented data indicate that the pituitary gland plays a significant role in the regulation of plasma calcium and chloride levels in S. gairdneri, while its role in the regulation of plasma magnesium and sodium is less clear. The pituitary gland seems to play a minimal role in the plasma regulation of inorganic phosphate and potassium.
