Abstract
In contrast to most fishes, salmonids exhibit the unique ability to hold their eggs for several days after ovulation without significant loss of viability. During this period, eggs are held in the body cavity in a biological fluid, the coelomic fluid (CF) that is responsible for preserving egg viability. To identify CF proteins responsible for preserving egg viability, a proteomic comparison was performed using 3 salmonid species and 3 non-salmonid species to identify salmonid-specific highly abundant proteins. In parallel, rainbow trout CF fractions were purified and used in a biological test to estimate their egg viability preservation potential. The most biologically active CF fractions were then subjected to mass spectrometry analysis. We identified 50 proteins overabundant in salmonids and present in analytical fractions with high egg viability preservation potential. The identity of these proteins illuminates the biological processes participating in egg viability preservation. Among identified proteins of interest, the ovarian-specific expression and abundance in CF at ovulation of N-acetylneuraminic acid synthase a (Nansa) suggest a previously unsuspected role. We show that salmonid CF is a complex biological fluid containing a diversity of proteins related to immunity, calcium binding, lipid metabolism, proteolysis, extracellular matrix and sialic acid metabolic pathway that are collectively responsible for preserving egg viability.

Abstract
Tsinling lenok trout (Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis Li) is a species of cold-water salmon that faces serious challenges due to global warming. High temperature stress has been found to damage the gut integrity of cold-water fish, impacting their growth and immunity. However, limited research exists on the causal relationship between gut microbial disturbance and metabolic dysfunction in cold-water fish induced by high temperature stress. To address this gap, we conducted a study to investigate the effects of high temperature stress (24 °C) on the gut tissue structure, antioxidant capacity, gut microorganisms, and metabolome reactions of tsinling lenok trout. Our analysis using 16 S rDNA gene sequencing revealed significant changes in the gut microbial composition and metabolic profile. Specifically, the abundance of Firmicutes and Gemmatimonadetes decreased significantly with increasing temperature, while the abundance of Bacteroidetes increased significantly. Metabolic analysis revealed a significant decrease in the abundance of glutathione, which is synthesized from glutamate and glycine, under high temperature stress. Additionally, there was a notable reduction in the levels of adenosine, inosine, xanthine, guanosine, and deoxyguanosine, which are essential for DNA/RNA synthesis. Conversely, there was a significant increase in the abundance of D-glucose 6 P. Furthermore, high temperature stress adversely affects intestinal structure and barrier function. Our findings provide valuable insights into the mechanism of high temperature stress in cold-water fish and serve as a foundation for future research aimed at mitigating the decline in production performance caused by such stress.

Abstract
Thiamine (vitamin B1) is required by all living organisms in multiple metabolic pathways. It is scarce in natural systems, and deficiency can lead to reproductive failure, neurological issues, and death. One major cause of thiamine deficiency is an overreliance on diet items containing the enzyme thiaminase. Thiaminase activity has been noted in many prey fishes and linked to cohort failure in salmonid predators that eat prey fish with thiaminase activity, yet it is generally unknown whether evolutionary history, fish traits, and/or environmental conditions lead to production of thiaminase. We conducted literature and GenBank BLAST sequence searches to collect thiaminase activity data and sequence homology data in expressed protein sequences for 300 freshwater and marine fishes. We then tested whether presence or absence of thiaminase could be predicted by evolutionary relationships, trophic level, omega-3 fatty acid concentrations, habitat, climate, invasive potential, and body size. There was no evolutionary relationship with thiaminase activity. It first appears in Class Actinoptergyii (bony ray-finned fishes) and is present across the entire Actinoptergyii phylogeny in both primitive and derived fish orders. Instead, ecological factors explained the most variation in thiaminase: fishes were more likely to express thiaminase if they fed closer to the base of the food web, were high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, lived in freshwater, and were from tropical climates. These data provide a foundation for understanding sources of thiaminase leading to thiamine deficiency in fisheries and other organisms, including humans that eat uncooked fish.

Abstract
Anadromous salmonids exhibit partial migration, where some individuals within a population migrate down to the ocean through complex interactions between body size and photoperiod. This study aimed to integrate the ontogenetic and seasonal patterns of smoltification, a series of changes for future marine life, in a strain of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou). Spring smoltification, as evidenced by the activation of gill Na+,K+-ATPase (NKA), was induced during winter under an advanced photoperiod. In addition, juveniles showed an additional peak in gill NKA activity in August regardless of the photoperiod. When juvenile masu salmon were subjected to feeding manipulations during the first spring/summer, only fish exceeding a fork length of 12 cm exhibited an increased gill NKA activity. We tested whether size-driven smoltification required a long-day period by exposing juveniles to a constant short-day length (9-h light and 15-h dark) from January to November. Juveniles under short-day conditions exceeded 12 cm in June but showed no signs of smoltification. Thus, masu salmon undergo photoperiod-limited, size-driven smoltification during the first summer and size-limited, photoperiod-driven smoltification the following spring. The findings of the present study provide a framework for further elucidation of the physiological mechanisms underlying partial migration in salmonids.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor-binding proteins (IGFBPs) regulate the activity of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1. Among the three major circulating IGFBPs in salmonids, IGFBP-1b is an inhibitor of IGF activity induced under catabolic conditions. IGFBP-1b is considered to quickly sequester IGF-1 from the circulation. However, the level of circulating IGFBP-1b present in its unoccupied free form is unknown. Here, we aimed to develop a non-equilibrium ligand immunofunctional assay (LIFA) to evaluate IGF-binding capacity of circulating intact IGFBP-1b. Purified Chinook salmon IGFBP-1b, its antiserum, and europium-labeled salmon IGF-1 were used as the assay components. In the LIFA, IGFBP-1b was first captured by the antiserum, allowed to bind to the labeled IGF-1 for 22 h at 4 °C, and quantified its IGF-binding capacity. Serial dilutions of the standard and serum were prepared simultaneously within a certain concentration range (1.1-12.5 ng/ml). In underyearling masu salmon, IGF-binding capacity of intact IGFBP-1b was higher in fasted fish than in fed fish. Transferring Chinook salmon parr to seawater also increased IGF-binding capacity of IGFBP-1b, most likely due to osmotic stress. In addition, there was a strong relationship between total IGFBP-1b levels and its IGF-binding capacity. These results suggest that IGFBP-1b expressed under stress is mostly present in the free form. On the contrary, during smoltification of masu salmon, IGF-binding capacity of IGFBP-1b in the serum was relatively low and less related to the total IGFBP-1b level, suggesting its functional difference under certain physiological conditions. These results indicate that estimating both total IGFBP-1b level and its IGF-binding capacity is useful for evaluating the catabolic status and unraveling the regulation of IGF-1 activity by IGFBP-1b.

Abstract
Adaptation to different environments can be achieved by physiological shifts throughout development. Hormonal regulators shape the physiological and morphological traits of the evolving animals making them fit for the particular ecological surroundings. We hypothesized that the artificially induced hypersynthesis of calcitonin and parathyroid hormone mutually influencing calcium metabolism could affect bone formation during early ontogeny in fish imitating the heterochrony in craniofacial ossification in natural adaptive morphs. Conducting an experiment, we found that the long-standing treatment of salmonid juveniles with high doses of both hormones irreversibly shifts the corresponding hormone status for a period well beyond the time scale for total degradation of the injected hormone. The hormones program the ossification of the jaw suspension bones and neurocranial elements in a specific manner affecting the jaws position and pharingo-branchial area stretching. These morphological shifts resemble the adaptive variants found in sympatric pelagic and demersal morphs of salmonids. We conclude that solitary deviations in the regulators of calcium metabolism could determine functional morphological traits via transformations in skeletal development.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (Ast) has been shown to be beneficial for the antioxidant capacity, immune system, and stress tolerance of fish. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of Ast on the antioxidant capacity and intestinal microbiota of tsinling lenok trout. We formulated four diets with 0 (CT), 50 (A50), 100 (A100), and 150 (A150) mg/kg Ast. The results showed that Ast increased total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), lysozyme (LZM), and catalase (CAT) activities. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content was lower in A150 and A100 than in CT (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the activities of acid phosphatase (ACP) were higher in A100 and A150 than in CT (P < 0.05). We harvested the midgut and applied next-generation sequencing of 16S rDNA. Compared to the control group, the Ast group had a greater abundance of Halomonas. Functional analysis showed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation was significantly higher with Ast, while novobiocin biosynthesis and C5-branched dibasic acid metabolism were significantly lower with Ast. In conclusion, Ast could enhance the antioxidant capacity, non-specific immunity, and intestinal health of tsinling lenok trout.

Abstract
An easy method to measure the uptake rate of the persistent dye alizarin red S (ARS) during marking of whitefish eggs was established and used to measure the ARS content in three different whitefish species during and at the end of the marking procedure. Those values show that only 6-10% of the ARS in the marking solution will be absorbed by the eggs (0.0061-0.0119 mg per egg). Additional analyses 6, 15 and 36 months after marking showed ARS levels below the response level (<6.9 μg kg-1 ).

Abstract
Salmonids have four subtypes of insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-1, termed -1a1, -1a2, -1b1 and 1b2, owing to teleost- and a lineage-specific whole-genome duplications. We have previously produced recombinant proteins of masu salmon IGFBP-1a1 and -1b2 and conducted functional analysis. To further characterize salmonid-specific IGFBP-1s, we cloned cDNAs encoding mature proteins of IGFBP-1a2 and -1b1 from the liver of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou). IGFBP-1a2 and -1b1 shared a 56% amino acid sequence homology whereas their homologies with their counterparts (i.e. -1a1 and -1b2) were 77% and 82%, respectively. We next expressed recombinant masu salmon (rs) IGFBP-1a2 and -1b1 with fusion partners thioredoxin (Trx) and a His-tag using the pET-32a(+) vector system in Escherichia coli. Trx.His.rsIGFBP-1s were detected in the insoluble faction, solubilized in a buffer containing urea, and isolated by Ni-affinity chromatography. They were refolded by dialysis and cleaved from the fusion partners by enterokinase. rsIGFBP-1a2 and -1b1 were purified by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Purified rsIGFBP-1a2 and -1b1 had the ability to bind digoxigenin-labeled human IGF-I on ligand blotting. We then examined the effects of rsIGFBP-1a1, -1a2, -1b1 and -1b2 in combination with human IGF-I on growth hormone (GH) release from cultured pituitary cells of masu salmon. IGF-I alone reduced GH release while the addition of rsIGFBP-1a1, -1b1 or -1b2, but not rsIGFBP-1a2, diminished the suppressive effect of IGF-I. Addition of rsIGFBP-1s without IGF-I had no effect on GH release. These results show that rsIGFBP-1b1, along with rsIGFBP-1a1 and -1b2, inhibits IGF-I action on the pituitary in masu salmon. The lack of the effect by rsIGFBP-1a2 suggests that salmon IGFBP-1 subtypes underwent subfunction partitioning and have different degrees of IGF-inhibitory action.

Abstract
The Lake Huron ecosystem is unique among the Laurentian Great Lakes (USA/Canada) in that its surface area encompasses 3 distinct basins. This ecosystem recently experienced significant ecological restructuring characterized by changes in primary production, species dominance and abundances, and top predator energy dynamics. However, much of the evidence for this restructuring has been largely derived from biomonitoring data obtained from long-term sampling of the lake's Main Basin. We examined polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations and the stable isotopes of carbon (δ13 C) and nitrogen (δ15 N) in rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), bloater (Coregonus hoyi), and round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) to determine spatial variability in these environmental markers as indicators of the ubiquity of trophic restructuring throughout Lake Huron. Stable isotopes indicated that North Channel fish occupied trophic positions between 0.5 and 1.0 lower relative to Main Basin and Georgian Bay conspecifics, respectively. Sum PCB concentrations for 41 congeners were highest for fish from the Main Basin (27.5 ± 3.0 ng g-1 wet wt) and Georgian Bay (26.3 ± 3.4 ng g-1 wet wt) relative to North Channel (13.6 ± 1.2 ng g-1 wet wt) fish. Discriminant functions analysis demonstrated basin-specific PCB congener profiles with individual species also having distinct profiles dependent on their basin of collection. These bioaccumulation patterns among Lake Huron forage fish mirror those reported for lake trout in this lake and indicate that the degree of food-web ecological restructuring in Lake Huron is not equivalent across the basins. Specifically, basin-specific PCB congener profiles demonstrated that differences among Lake Huron secondary and top predator consumer species are likely dictated by cross-basin differences in zooplankton community ecology and trophodynamics that can regulate the efficiencies of prey energy transfer and PCB congener bioaccumulation patterns in aquatic food webs. Abstract
Climate warming and nitrate pollution are pervasive aquatic stressors that endanger the persistence of fishes prevailing in anthropogenically disturbed habitats. Individually, elevated nitrate and temperature can influence fish energy homeostasis by increasing maintenance costs and impairing oxygen transport capacity. However, it remains unknown how fish respond to simultaneous exposure to elevated temperature and nitrate pollution. Hence, we examined the combined effects of nitrate and elevated temperatures on aerobic scope (AS, maximum-standard metabolic rates) and cardiorespiratory attributes (haemoglobin HB, haematocrit HCT, relative ventricle mass RVM, and somatic spleen index SSI) in a freshwater salmonid, Thymallus thymallus. A 3 × 2 factorial design was used, where fish were exposed to one of three ecologically relevant levels of nitrate (0, 50, or 200 mg NO3- l-1) and one of two temperatures (18 °C or 22 °C) for 6 weeks. Elevated temperature increased AS by 36 % and the improvement was stronger when coupled with nitrate exposure, indicating a positive synergistic interaction. HB was reduced by nitrate exposure, while HCT was independent of nitrate pollution and temperature. Stressor exposure induced remodeling of key elements of the cardiorespiratory system. RVM was 39 % higher in fish exposed to 22 °C compared to 18 °C but was independent of nitrate exposure. SSI was independent of temperature but was 85 % and 57 % higher in fish exposed to 50 and 200 mg NO3- l-1, respectively. Taken together, these results highlight that simultaneous exposure to elevated temperatures and nitrate pollution offers cross-tolerance benefits, which may be underscored by cardiorespiratory remodeling.

Abstract
We report on concentrations of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) measured in the adipose fins of returning adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) to the river Tees in the Northeast of England. Overall, higher concentrations of these contaminants were found in sea trout samples, where detected congeners reflected the more widely used commercial formulations, in particular for the PBDEs. Our results suggest that these fish could be bioaccumulating persistent organic pollutants via diet during their migratory routes (North Sea and the Norwegian Sea) and, in addition, some level of re-mobilisation of these compounds could still be occurring in the UK eastern coastal areas. The use of adipose fin of returning salmonids could be further developed as a non-lethal approach to assess whether persistent contaminants are being accumulated during the juvenile to adult phase of salmonids originating from UK rivers.

Abstract
The present study analysed the response of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) to reduced toxicity after the long-term contamination of subarctic Lake Imandra. High concentrations of Ni, Al, and Sr in fish organs and tissues were accompanied by nephrocalcinosis, scoliosis, and myopathy during the period of intense contamination. After reduction of the toxic impact on the lake, the accumulation of Cu, Al, Sr, Cr, Pb, and Hg in the kidney, which is the target organ for toxicity, was two-fold less and that of Cd was 10-fold less in whitefish from the contaminated part of the lake compared with those in whitefish from the non-contaminated parts of the lake. The ecological success of whitefish from the contaminated part of the lake was associated with the limited accumulation of metals in organs and tissues and a more favourable physiological state compared with whitefish from non-contaminated parts of the lake. Redistribution models were constructed for essential and non-essential metals in the fish liver and kidney depending on the physiological state of fish. The results revealed changes in Fe and Zn metabolism: an increase in Fe and a decrease in Zn accumulation in the liver with increasing stage of liver disease and decreasing blood haemoglobin concentration. Furthermore, under the sub-toxic (except for Cu) conditions of Lake Imandra, the strategy of adaptive fish response is to preserve and maintain acid-base regulation system.

Abstract
Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) essential for human nutrition are mostly obtained from wild-caught fish. To sustain the LC-PUFA supply from natural populations, one needs to know how environmental and intrinsic factors affect fish fatty acid (FA) profiles and contents. We studied seven Salmoniformes species from two arctic lakes. We aimed to estimate differences in the FA composition of total lipids and two major lipid classes, polar lipids (PL) and triacylglycerols (TAG), among the species and to evaluate LC-PUFA contents corresponding to PL and TAG in muscles. Fatty acid profiles of PL and TAG in all species were characterized by the prevalence of omega-3 LC-PUFA and C16-C18 monoenoic FA, respectively. Fish with similar feeding spectra were identified similarly in multivariate analyses of total lipids, TAG and PL, due to differences in levels of mostly the same FA. Thus, the suitability of both TAG and total lipids for the identification of the feeding spectra of fish was confirmed. All species had similar content of LC-PUFA esterified as PL, 1.9–3.5 mg g−1, while the content of the TAG form strongly varied, from 0.9 to 9.8 mg g−1. The LC-PUFA-rich fish species accumulated these valuable compounds predominately in the TAG form.

Abstract
Colour vision relies on retinal photoreceptors that express a different predominant visual pigment protein (opsin). In several vertebrates, the primary opsin expressed by a photoreceptor can change throughout ontogeny, although the molecular factors that influence such regulation are poorly understood. One of these factors is thyroid hormone which, together with its receptors, modulates opsin expression in the retinas of multiple vertebrates including rodents and salmonid fishes. In the latter, thyroid hormone induces a switch in opsin expression from SWS1 (ultraviolet light sensitive) to SWS2 (short wavelength or blue light sensitive) in the single cone photoreceptors of the retina. The actions of other hormones on opsin expression have not been investigated. In the present study, we used a transgenic strain of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kitsutch) with enhanced levels of circulating growth hormone compared to that of wild siblings to assess the effects of this hormone on the SWS1 to SWS2 opsin switch. Transgenic fish showed a developmentally accelerated opsin switch compared to size-matched controls as assessed by immunohistological and in situ hybridisation labelling of photoreceptors and by quantification of transcripts using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. This accelerated switch led to a different spectral sensitivity maximum, under a middle to long wavelength adapting background, from ultraviolet (λmax ~ 380 nm) in controls to short wavelengths (λmax ~ 430 nm) in transgenics, demonstrating altered colour vision. The effects of growth hormone over-expression were independent of circulating levels of thyroid hormone (triiodothyronine), the hormone typically associated with opsin switches in vertebrates.

Abstract
Temperature has unequivocal effects on several aspects of fish physiology, but the full extent of its interaction with key endocrine signaling systems to influence metabolic function remains unknown. The aim of the current study was to assess the individual and combined effects of elevated temperature and hyperthyroidism on hepatic metabolism in juvenile lake whitefish by quantifying mRNA abundance and activity of key metabolic enzymes. Fish were exposed to 13 (control), 17 or 21 °C for 0, 4, 8 or 24 days in the presence or absence of low-T4 (1 µg × g body weight-1) or high-T4 (10 µg × g body weight-1) treatment. Our results demonstrate moderate sensitivity to elevated temperature in this species, characterized by short-term changes in mRNA abundance of several metabolic enzymes and long-term declines in citrate synthase (CS) and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activities. T4-induced hyperthyroidism also had several short-term effects on mRNA abundance of metabolic transcripts, including depressions in acetyl-coA carboxylase β (accβ) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1β (cpt1β), and stabilization of cs mRNA levels; however, these effects were primarily limited to elevated temperature groups, indicating temperature-dependent effects of exogenous T4 treatment in this species. In contrast, maximal CS and COX activities were not altered by hyperthyroidism at any temperature. Collectively, our data suggest that temperature has the potential to manipulate thyroid hormone physiology in juvenile lake whitefish and, under warm-conditions, hyperthyroidism may suppress certain elements of the β-oxidation pathway without substantial impacts on overall cellular oxidative capacity.

Abstract
The increasing use of terrestrial plant lipids to replace of fish oil in commercial aquafeeds requires understanding synthesis and storage of long chain-polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in farmed fish. Manipulation of dietary fatty acids may maximize tissue storage of LC-PUFA, through increased production and selective utilization. A data synthesis study was conducted to estimate optimal levels of fatty acids that may maximize the production and storage of LC-PUFA in the edible portion of salmonids. Data were compiled from four studies with Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and steelhead trout (total n = 180) which were fed diets containing different terrestrial-based oils to replace fish oil. LC-PUFA (%) were linearly correlated between diet and muscle tissue (p < 0.001; r2 > 44%), indicating proportional storage after consumption. The slope, or retention rate, was highest for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) at 1.23, indicating that an additional 23% of DHA was stored in the muscle. Dietary saturated fatty acids were positively related to DHA stored in the muscle (p < 0.001; r2 = 22%), which may involve membrane structural requirements, as well as selective catabolism. DHA was found to be optimally stored with a dietary n-3: n-6 ratio of 1.03: 1. These new results provide a baseline of optimal dietary ratios that can be tested experimentally to determine the efficacy of balancing dietary fatty acids for maximum LC-PUFA storage.

Abstract
Subarctic lakes are characterised by extreme seasonal variation in light and temperature which influences growth, maturation, condition and resource use of fishes. However, our understanding of how seasonal changes affect mercury concentrations of fishes is limited. We conducted a year-round study (3 ice-covered months, 3 open-water months) with open-water inter-annual aspect (3 years: samples from August/September), focusing on total mercury (THg) concentrations and ecological characteristics of a common freshwater fish, European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus (L.)) from a subarctic lake. We measured THg concentrations from tissues with fast (liver, n = 164) and moderate (muscle, n = 225) turnover rates, providing information on THg dynamics over different temporal scales. In both tissues, lipid-corrected THg concentrations were highest in winter (liver: 1.70 ± 0.88 μg/g, muscle: 0.24 ± 0.05 μg/g) and lowest in summer (liver: 0.87 ± 0.72 μg/g, muscle: 0.19 ± 0.04 μg/g). THg concentrations increased in winter following the summer-autumn dietary shift to pelagic zooplankton and starvation after spawning. Whitefish THg concentrations decreased towards summer, and were associated with consumption of benthic macroinvertebrates and subsequent growth dilution. Mercury bioaccumulated in both tissues with age, both showing the strongest regression slopes in winter and lowest in summer. THg concentrations in liver and muscle tissue were correlated throughout the year, however the correlation was lowest in summer, indicating high metabolism during somatic growing season in summer and growth dilution. Multiple linear regression models explained 50% and 55% of the THg variation in liver and muscle both models dominated by seasonally-variable factors i.e. sexual maturity, δ13C, and condition factor. Seasonally varying bioaccumulation slopes and the higher level of intra-annual variation (21%) in whitefish THg concentration in muscle than the inter-annual accumulation (8%) highlight the importance of including seasonal factors in future THg studies.

Abstract
Resource polymorphism, whereby ancestral trophic generalists undergo divergence into multiple specialist morphs, is common in salmonid fish populations inhabiting subarctic lakes. However, the extent to which such resource specialization into the three principal lake habitats (littoral, profundal, and pelagic) affects patterns of contaminant bioaccumulation remains largely unexplored. We assessed total mercury concentrations (THg) of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus (L.)) and their invertebrate prey in relation to potential explanatory variables across 6 subarctic lakes, of which three are inhabited by polymorphic (comprised of four morphs) and three by monomorphic populations. Among invertebrate prey, the highest THg concentrations were observed in profundal benthic macroinvertebrates, followed by pelagic zooplankton, with concentrations lowest in littoral benthic macroinvertebrates in both lake types. Broadly similar patterns were apparent in whitefish in polymorphic systems, where average age-corrected THg concentrations and bioaccumulation rates were the highest in pelagic morphs, intermediate in the profundal morph, and the lowest in the littoral morph. In monomorphic systems, age-corrected THg concentrations were generally lower, and showed pronounced lake-specific variation. In the polymorphic systems, we found significant relationships between whitefish muscle tissue THg concentration and gill raker count, resource use, lipid content and maximum length, whilst no such relationships were apparent in the monomorphic systems. Across all polymorphic lakes, the major variables explaining THg in whitefish were gill raker count and age, whereas in monomorphic systems, the factors were lake-specific. Whitefish resource polymorphism across the three main lake habitats therefore appears to have profound impacts on THg concentration and bioaccumulation rate. This highlights the importance of recognizing such intraspecific diversity in both future scientific studies and mercury monitoring programs.

Abstract
Ichthyoarchaeological evidence is uncommon at ancient hunter-gatherer sites from various regions and timeframes. This research contributes to the development of microarchaeological techniques useful for identifying fishing economies in situations where classifiable bones are unavailable. Specifically, traces of heat altered bone mineral in domestic hearths are expected to provide markers for discarded fish remains. We used a series of laboratory incineration experiments to characterize the mineralogy of burned salmonid vertebrae. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction distinguished the formation of beta magnesium tricalcium phosphate (βMgTCP) at temperatures as low as 600 °C. Bones from a sample of game mammals and birds did not form this phase at temperatures below 1,000 °C. We propose that this neoformed mineral can serve as a proxy for hunter-gatherer salmonid fishing when typical ichthyoarchaeological evidence is absent. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, it will be possible to rapidly and inexpensively determine the presence of βMgTCP in fragmentary burned bone remains associated with combustion features. The occurrence of βMgTCP in archaeological hearth features will offer a new means of further evaluating the temporal, geographic, and cultural scope of salmonid harvesting. We also acknowledge the value of biphasic hydroxylapatite-βMgTCP recovered from Atlantic salmon vertebrae as a bioceramic.

Abstract
Thermal acclimation is known to elicit metabolic adjustments in ectotherms, but the cellular mechanisms and endocrine control of these shifts have not been fully elucidated. Here we examined the relationship between thermal acclimation, thyroid hormones and oxidative metabolism in juvenile lake whitefish. Impacts of thermal acclimation above (19°C) or below (8°C) the thermal optimum (13°C) and exposure to exogenous thyroid hormone (60µg T4/g body weight) were assessed by quantifying citrate synthase and cytochrome c oxidase activities in liver, red muscle, white muscle and heart. Warm acclimation decreased citrate synthase activity in liver and elevated both citrate synthase and cytochrome c oxidase activities in red muscle. In contrast, induction of hyperthyroidism in warm-acclimated fish stimulated a significant increase in liver citrate synthase and heart cytochrome c oxidase activities, and a decrease in the activity of both enzymes in red muscle. No change in citrate synthase or cytochrome c oxidase activities was observed following cold acclimation in either the presence or absence of exogenous thyroid hormones. Collectively, our results indicate that thyroid hormones influence the activity of oxidative enzymes more strongly in warm-acclimated than in cold-acclimated lake whitefish, and they may play a role in mediating metabolic adjustments observed during thermal acclimation.

Abstract
European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) embryos and larvae were exposed to 6 different manganese sulfate (MnSO4 ) concentrations from fertilization to the 3-d-old larvae. The fertilization success, offspring survival, larval growth, yolk consumption, embryonic and larval Mn tissue concentrations, and transcript levels of detoxification-related genes were measured in the long-term incubation. A full factorial breeding design (4 females × 2 males) allowed examination of the significance of both female and male effects, as well as female-male interactions in conjunction with the MnSO4 exposure in terms of the observed endpoints. The MnSO4 exposure reduced the survival of the whitefish early life stages. The offspring MnSO4 tolerance also was affected by the female parent, and the female-specific mean lethal concentrations (LC50s) varied from 42.0 mg MnSO4 /L to 84.6 mg MnSO4 /L. The larval yolk consumption seemed slightly inhibited at the exposure concentration of 41.8 mg MnSO4 /L. The MnSO4 exposure caused a significant induction of metallothionein-A (mt-a) and metallothionein-B (mt-b) in the 3-d-old larvae, and at the exposure concentration of 41.8 mg MnSO4 /L the mean larval mt-a and mt-b expressions were 47.5% and 56.6% higher, respectively, than at the control treatment. These results illustrate that whitefish reproduction can be impaired in waterbodies that receive Mn and SO4 in concentrations substantially above the typical levels in boreal freshwaters, but the offspring tolerance can be significantly affected by the parents and in particular the female parent. Abstract
Recent studies have shown the presence of large amounts of microRNAs (miRNAs; miRs) from damaged cells in the peripheral blood. In this study, we investigated the levels of miRNAs circulating in the blood plasma of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) after exposure to microcystin-LR. We used real-time PCR to examine the relative expression of plasma levels of 4 miRNAs (miR-122-5p and let-7c-5p, the liver-enriched microRNAs, miR-148a-3p which promotes the hapatospecific phenotype in mammals, and miR-92a-3p, a cell proliferation and angiogenesis promoter, potentially hepatocarcinogenic) during the first 48 h after exposure to MC-LR. We observed a rapid increase of miR-122-5p levels 8 h after exposure (P < 0.05), which continued to the end of the experiment. Our results demonstrated that the plasma miR-122-5p was indicative of MC-LR-induced liver injury, exhibiting areas under the curve close to 1 in ROC analysis (AUC = 0.976, P < 0.001). Although plasma levels of miR-148a-3p and miR-92a-3p were significantly elevated by the end of the experiment, their discriminative power was lower than reported for the miR-122-5p. Based on these results and reports on miRNA-based diagnosis of liver injuries in mammals, plasma miR-122-5p could be considered as a robust, new generation diagnostic biomarker in fish, helpful for the non-invasive diagnosis of liver damage.

Abstract
To better understand background radiation levels in country foods, a total of 125 fish samples were collected from three lakes (Lake 226, Lake 302 and Lake 305) in the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in Ontario of Canada during the summer of 2014. Concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides ((226)Ra, (210)Pb and (210)Po) as well as anthropogenic radionuclides ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) were measured. This study confirmed that (210)Po is the dominant contributor to radiation doses resulting from fish consumption. While concentrations of (210)Pb and (226)Ra were below conventional detection limits, (210)Po was measured in almost all fish samples collected from the ELA. The average concentration was about 1.5 Bq/kg fresh weight (fw). None of the fish samples analysed in this study contained any detectable levels of (134)Cs. An average (137)Cs level of 6.1 Bq/kg fw was observed in freshwater fishes harvested in the ELA, almost twice that of samples measured in the National Capital Region of Canada in 2014 and more than 20 times higher than the levels observed in marine fish harvested from the Canadian west coast in 2013 and 2014. However, it is important to note that the concentrations of (137)Cs in fish samples from these inland lakes are considered very low from a radiological protection perspective. The resulting radiation dose for people from fish consumption would be a very small fraction of the annual dose from exposure to natural background radiation in Canada. The results indicate that fishes from inland lakes do not pose a radiological health concern.

Abstract
Risk assessments of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are often based on octanol-water (KOW) partitioning dynamics and may not adequately reflect bioaccumulation in air-breathing organisms. It has been suggested that compounds with low KOW and high octanol-air partitioning (KOA) coefficients have the potential to bioaccumulate in air-breathing organisms, including marine mammals. Here we evaluate differences in concentrations of POPs for two trophically matched Arctic species, spotted seal (Phoca largha) and sheefish (Stenodus leucichthys). We compared concentrations of 108 POPs in matched tissues (liver and muscle) across three ranges of KOW. We found a significant positive correlation between POP concentration and log KOA in spotted seal tissues for low log KOW compounds (log KOW <5.5, p<0.05). This provides further evidence for empirical models and observed bioaccumulation patterns in air-breathing organisms, and highlights the potential for bioaccumulation of these compounds in Arctic marine mammals.

Abstract
The substrate and inhibitory specificity of mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO) in the liver of males of the summer form of the chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta was studied. As to the spectrum of deaminated substrates, the hepatic MAO of the chum salmon is similar to MAO of most terrestrial mammals, for eight classical MAO substrates similarity in their substrate characteristics were found. Analysis of the antimonoamine oxidase activity of two derivaties of 2-propinilamine, five derivatives of acridine as well as of pyronine G revealed significant qualitative and quantitative differences as compared to the hepatic enzyme of tuna and whitefish. The compounds tested manifested themselves as irreversible inhibitors of chum salmon's hepatic MAO possessing various efficacy, but lacking the selectivity of action as dependent on the deaminated substrate. The obtained data on the substrate and inhibitory analysis provide an indirect evidence for the presence of a single molecular form of MAO in the chum salmon liver.

Abstract
The content of thyroid and sex steroid hormones is determined in fish-farm juveniles of Black Sea trout 5.5 months old, from the bottom and pelagic spatial groups differing in the probability of future selection of the resident or anadromous life strategies, respectively. Differences in the concentration of the aforementioned hormones are found in young-of-the-year corresponding to those in the migratory and resident forms of yearlings of trout. In the juveniles from the pelagic group at the age 0+, the level of triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and testosterone is higher than in specimens from the bottom group. Prolonged starvation results in a higher content of triiodthyronine, thyroxine, and testosterone in the blood of juveniles from both spatial groups. The concentration of estradiol-17β increases in pelagic specimens and decreases in bottom specimens.

Abstract
Interleukin-6 (IL6) is a pleiotropic cytokine with important immunoregulatory functions. Its expression is inducible in immune cells and tissues of several fish species. We also found that IL6 mRNA abundance was significantly increased in spleen, liver, and gill of rainbow trout after experimental infection with Aeromonas salmonicida. Genomic DNA sequences of IL6 orthologs from three salmonid species revealed a conserved exon/intron structure and a high overall nucleotide identity of >88%. To uncover key mechanisms regulating IL6 expression in salmonid fish, we amplified a fragment of the proximal IL6 promoter from rainbow trout and identified in-silico conserved binding sites for NF-κB and CEBP. The activity of this IL6 promoter fragment was analyzed in the established human embryonic kidney line HEK-293. Luciferase- and GFP-based reporter systems revealed that the proximal IL6 promoter is activated by Escherichia coli. Essentially, both reporter systems proved that NF-κB p50, but not NF-κB p65 or CEBP, activates the IL6 promoter fragment. Truncation of this fragment caused a significant decrease in IL6 promoter activation. This characterization of the proximal promoter of the IL6-encoding gene provides basic knowledge about the IL6 gene expression in rainbow trout.

Abstract
The effects of wastewater from a mining and ore-dressing mill on fish in Lake Kostomukshskoe, which is used as a cesspool of circulating water and for storage of industrial wastes produced by the Kostomuksha mining and ore-dressing mill in northwest Russia, were studied. The lake is characterized by heavy mineralization, high pH, elevated levels of K(+), Li(+), SO4 (2-), NO(2-), Cl(-), Li, Mn, and Ni, and the presence of a fine-dispersed mechanical suspension. To assess the impact of contamination on fish and determine the mechanisms of their adaptation, we investigated the biochemical indices and histology of the liver of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) and pike (Esox lucius L.) inhabiting Lake Kostomukshskoe, downstream Lake Koyvas (64° 47' 30° 59'), and Lake Kamennoe, which is located in a nature preserve and has not been affected by anthropogenic activity (64° 28' 30° 13'). Changes were detected in the activity of metabolic enzymes (cytochrome c oxidase (COX), lactate dehydrogenase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) in the liver. Specifically, the COX activity in the liver of both fish species from the contaminated lake decreased, indicating a low level of aerobic metabolism. Lipid infiltration was the most visible and widespread change observed in the liver of both fish species; therefore, it can be considered a marker of such long-term contamination. Lesions in pike liver demonstrated a wider range of severity than in those of whitefish. In summary, metabolic enzyme activity and histomorphology of the liver of whitefish and pike differed among lakes in a species-specific manner. The changes in enzyme activity and histomorphological alterations in fish that were observed can be applied for evaluation of freshwater systems that may be subjected to mineral pollution.

Abstract
Extensive screening analyses of perfluorooctane sulfonate and related perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in biota samples from all over the world have identified PFCs as global pollutants and have shown their bioaccumulation into higher trophic levels in the food chain. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are environmental contaminants belonging to a chemical group known as perfluorinated compounds. PFOS and PFOA are very persistent in the environment and bioaccumulate in humans. They are potential reproductive and developmental toxicants and are considered to be emerging endocrine disrupters. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) considers both compounds to be carcinogenic and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently pointed out that they are associated with adverse health effects. Diet is considered the main source of exposure to PFCs, which have been found more frequently in fish and other seafood, compared to other food groups. In fact, aquatic ecosystems represent the final reservoir for PFCs due to their great affinity for sedimentary and living organic matter. In these systems, measured levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) could increase along the trophic web, ultimately affecting humans that consume aquatic species. In this study, PFOS and PFOA was detected by LC-MS/MS in muscle samples of Coregonus lavaretus (European whitefish) and Perca fluviatilis (European perch) collected from Lake Maggiore, a large lake located on the south side of the Italian Alps. PFOA was not found in any of the investigated samples above the limit of quantitation of 0.50 ng g(-1) fresh weight (fw), whereas PFOS was detected in all 90 samples with concentrations of up to 46.0 ng g(-1)fw. Mean concentrations were 22.2 ng g(-1)fw in P. fluviatilis and 20.0 ng g(-1)fw in C.lavaretus. Comparison of our results with literature data on PFOS intake suggested that fish from Lake Maggiore may be a significant source of dietary PFOS exposure, even if the reported values were lower than the Total Daily Intake (TDI) proposed by EFSA.

Abstract
A technique for laboratory estimation of net trophic transfer efficiency (γ) of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners to piscivorous fish from their prey is described herein. During a 135-day laboratory experiment, we fed bloater (Coregonus hoyi) that had been caught in Lake Michigan to lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) kept in eight laboratory tanks. Bloater is a natural prey for lake trout. In four of the tanks, a relatively high flow rate was used to ensure relatively high activity by the lake trout, whereas a low flow rate was used in the other four tanks, allowing for low lake trout activity. On a tank-by-tank basis, the amount of food eaten by the lake trout on each day of the experiment was recorded. Each lake trout was weighed at the start and end of the experiment. Four to nine lake trout from each of the eight tanks were sacrificed at the start of the experiment, and all 10 lake trout remaining in each of the tanks were euthanized at the end of the experiment. We determined concentrations of 75 PCB congeners in the lake trout at the start of the experiment, in the lake trout at the end of the experiment, and in bloaters fed to the lake trout during the experiment. Based on these measurements, γ was calculated for each of 75 PCB congeners in each of the eight tanks. Mean γ was calculated for each of the 75 PCB congeners for both active and inactive lake trout. Because the experiment was replicated in eight tanks, the standard error about mean γ could be estimated. Results from this type of experiment are useful in risk assessment models to predict future risk to humans and wildlife eating contaminated fish under various scenarios of environmental contamination.

Abstract
Anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) undergo voluntary winter fasting for months in the Arctic. We tested the hypothesis that extended fasting will compromise the ability of this species to evoke an immune response. Charr were either fed or fasted for 85 days and challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the molecular immune response in the liver and spleen assessed at 8 and 96 h post-injection. LPS increased IL-1β, IL-8, and serum amyloid protein A (SAA) mRNA levels in both groups, but the liver IL-1β and IL-8, and spleen IL-8 responses were reduced in the fasted group. Fasting upregulated SOCS-1 and SOCS-2 mRNA abundance, while LPS stimulated SOCS-3 mRNA abundance and this response was higher in the fasted liver. Collectively, extended fasting and emaciation does not curtail the capacity of charr to evoke an immune response, whereas upregulation of SOCS may be a key adaptation to conserve energy by restricting the inflammatory response.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of locomotion and feeding on the metabolic mode of juvenile lenok, Brachymystax lenok (Pallas) under different water temperatures, the pre-exercise oxygen consumption rate (MO2p), active oxygen consumption rate (MO2a), metabolic scope (MS), critical swimming speed (Uc) and swimming metabolic rate of both fasting and fed fish were measured at five temperature levels (4 degrees C, 8 degrees C, 12 degrees C, 16 degrees C and 20 degrees C) and ten flow velocities with saturated dissolved oxygen (> 8.0 mg x L(-1)). The results showed that the MO2p and MO2a of the feeding group were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the fasting group under different temperatures, and the increases in MO2p and MO2a at 4 degrees C, 8 degrees C, 12 degrees C, 16 degrees C and 20 degrees C were 15%, 47%, 30%, 43% and 8%, and 12%, 23%, 21%, 36% and 7%, respectively. No significant differences were observed for Uc and MS between the fasting and the feeding groups (P > 0.05), but the MS showed a trend of decline with increase in water temperature. Swimming metabolic rate of fish was increased with increasing the flow velocity, and further increase of flow velocity resulted in a decline in swimming metabolic rate, and the swimming metabolic rate of the feeding group was significantly higher than that of the fasting group (P < 0.05). The metabolic rate increased with increasing the swimming speed up to 70% Uc, and then decreased with increasing the swimming speed up to Uc. It was concluded that, under certain temperature, the maximum metabolic rate was induced by exercise and feeding; the metabolic rate exhibited the additive metabolic mode before increasing to the maximum and thereafter, the metabolic rate induced by feeding reduced with decreasing the swimming metabolic rate, exhibiting the locomotion prioritized mode.

Abstract
An in situ study was performed to investigate the role of zooplankton as a vector of microcystins (MCs) from Planktothrix rubescens filaments to fish during a metalimnic bloom of P. rubescens in Lake Hallwil (Switzerland). The concentrations of MCs in P. rubescens and various zooplanktonic taxa (filter-feeders and predators) were assessed in different water strata (epi-, meta- and hypolimnion) using replicated sampling over a 24-hour survey. The presence of P. rubescens in the gut content of various zooplanktonic taxa (Daphnia, Bosmina and Chaoborus) was verified by targeting the cyanobacterial nucleic acids (DNA). These results highlighted that cyanobacterial cells constitute a part of food resource for herbivorous zooplanktonic taxa during metalimnic bloom periods. Furthermore, presence of MCs in Chaoborus larvae highlighted the trophic transfer of MCs between herbivorous zooplankton and their invertebrate predators. Our results suggest that zooplanktonic herbivores by diel vertical migration (DVM) act as vectors of MCs by encapsulating grazed cyanobacteria. As a consequence, they largely contribute to the contamination of zooplanktonic predators, and in fine of zooplanktivorous whitefish. Indeed, we estimated the relative contribution of three preys of the whitefish (i.e. Daphnia, Bosmina and Chaoborus) to diet contamination. We showed that Chaoborus and Daphnia were the highest contributor as MC vectors in the whitefish diet (74.6 and 20.5% of MC-LR equivalent concentrations, respectively). The transfer of MCs across the different trophic compartments follows complex trophic pathways involving various trophic levels whose relative importance in fish contamination might vary at daily and seasonal scale.

Abstract
The Single Organism (SO) model was developed to investigate the influence of temporal dynamics of aquatic organism properties on their exposure to organic chemicals in water. SO was then integrated with an existing dynamic surface-water model (DynA), to form the coupled water-bioaccumulation model EcoDynA. In order to evaluate the model performance, the results produced by EcoDynA were compared to the p,p'-DDT concentrations measured in specimens of whitefish of different age and sex caught in Lake Maggiore after the discovery of a DDT spill. The comparison showed a good agreement. Other satisfying results were obtained comparing model results with p,p'-DDT concentration values measured in another species of whitefish which were available in the literature. A preliminary sensitivity analysis confirmed that accounting for dynamics of parameters such as organism lipid fraction and feeding rate is necessary to obtain accurate exposure predictions.

Abstract
A functional understanding of processes involved in adaptive divergence is one of the awaiting opportunities afforded by high-throughput transcriptomic technologies. Functional analysis of coexpressed genes has succeeded in the biomedical field in identifying key drivers of disease pathways. However, in ecology and evolutionary biology, functional interpretation of transcriptomic data is still limited. Here, we used Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) to identify modules of coexpressed genes in muscle and brain tissue of a lake whitefish backcross progeny. Modules were connected to gradients of known adaptive traits involved in the ecological speciation process between benthic and limnetic ecotypes. Key drivers, that is, hub genes of functional modules related to reproduction, growth, and behavior were identified, and module preservation was assessed in natural populations. Using this approach, we identified modules of coexpressed genes involved in phenotypic divergence and their key drivers, and further identified a module part specifically rewired in the backcross progeny. Functional analysis of transcriptomic data can significantly contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying ecological speciation. Our findings point to bone morphogenetic protein and calcium signaling as common pathways involved in coordinated evolution of trophic behavior, trophic morphology (gill rakers), and reproduction. Results also point to pathways implicating hemoglobins and constitutive stress response (HSP70) governing growth in lake whitefish.

Abstract
Studies of reproduction and embryonic development in six species of coregonid fishes have revealed the possibility of their fertilized eggs to develop normally while being embedded in the ice of a spawning water body (optionally). Such ability is facilitated by extremely low respiratory activity of embryos at early stages of embryogenesis (from the stage of fission to the stage of organogenesis). Low level of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide emission is an adaptation to low diffusion gas permeability of the ice. The main factor controlling the rate of coregonids embryonic development is not temperature, but intensity and periodicity of insolation. Without the sunlight--an obligatory external factor--normal development is just not possible. Under experimental conditions, when developing in the water at near zero temperature or in the ice, normal morphogenesis of Arctic cisco and Sevan whitefish embryos was observed at the illumination of 50-300 lux. Hemoproteid cytochrome beta560, the pigment that has been discovered in water-soluble part of coregonids oocyte yolk and is treated as a biochemical marker for eggs of the family Coregonidae, in all likelihood performs protective (antioxidant) functions preventing spontaneous oxidation of embryo's fatty inclusions. Under the oxygen shortage inside the ice envelope, cytochrome beta560 probably sets conditions for oxidation processes of embryo's tissue respiration. Spherome, being kept till the time of hatching, acts as a temporary hydrostatic organ and ensures larvae buoyancy at the stage of postembryonic metamorphosis. It also serves as an energy store after downstream migration of larvae from the spawning areas till their shift to exogenous feeding on zooplankton. Conforming to ecological traits of reproduction and development, and also to revealed morphogenetic, physiological, and biochemical features, it is proposed to ascribe all of the currently known 26 species of whitefishes to "pagophilous" ecological group.

Abstract
Thick-lipped lenok, Brachymystax lenok is one of the ancient fish species in China and northeast Asia countries. Due to the overfishing, the population of lenok has been declined significantly. Cathelicidins are innate immune effectors that possess both bactericidal activities and immunomodulatory functions. This report identifies and characterizes the salmonoid cathelicidin (CATH_BRALE) from this ancient fish. It consists of open reading frame (ORF) of 886 bp encoding the putative peptide of 199 amino acids. Sequence alignment with other representative salmonid cathelicidins displayed two distinctive features of current lenok cathelicidin: high level of arginine, resulting in high positive charge and glycine residues, which is significantly different from most acknowledged types of cathelicidins; and the six-aminoacid tandem repeated sequence of RPGGGS detected in a variable number of copies among fish cathelicidins, suggesting the existence of a genetically unstable region similar to that found in some mammalian cathelicidins. Expression of CATH_BRALE is predominantly found in gill, with lower levels in the gastrointestinal tract and spleen. The homology modeled structure of CATH_BRALE exhibits structural features of antiparallel b-sheets flanked by a-helices that are representative of small cationic cathelicidin family peptides. CATH_BRALE possesses much stronger antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria than that of the human ortholog, LL-37. The growth of two typical fish bacterial pathogens, gram-negative bacterium of Aeromonas salmonicida and Aeromonas hydrophila was substantially inhibited by synthetic CATH_BRALE, with both MICs as low as 9.38 mM.

Abstract
Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) were fed bloater (Coregonus hoyi) in eight laboratory tanks over a 135-d experiment. At the start of the experiment, four to nine fish in each tank were sacrificed, and the concentrations of 75 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners within these fish were determined. Polychlorinated biphenyl congener concentrations were also determined in the 10 lake trout remaining in each of the eight tanks at the end of the experiment as well as in the bloater fed to the lake trout. Each lake trout was weighed at the start and the end of the experiment, and the amount of food eaten by the lake trout was recorded. Using these measurements, net trophic transfer efficiency (γ) from the bloater to the lake trout in each of the eight tanks was calculated for each of the 75 congeners. Results showed that γ did not vary significantly with the degree of chlorination of the PCB congeners, and γ averaged 0.66 across all congeners. However, γ did show a slight, but significant, decrease as log K(OW) increased from 6.0 to 8.2. Activity level of the lake trout did not have a significant effect on γ.

Abstract
In the present study, juvenile whitefish weighing 2 g were exposed by force-feeding to two ecologically relevant doses (0.05 and 0.5 μg per fish) of microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Then over 96 h the MC uptake in fish liver and muscle was measured, as the activity of the detoxification enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the liver, and the genotoxicity impact on red blood cells. Results show that (1) the MC-LR equivalent concentrations increased for both doses and in both organs of whitefish with approximately threefold lower concentrations for the low dose compared to the high dose in both organs and threefold lower concentrations in the muscle compared to the liver for each dose (2) the liver GST activity increased during the first 48 h of exposure with fivefold higher GST activity for the highest dose at 48 h compared to control and (3) MC-LR leads to deoxyribonucleic acid strand breaks that were detected by the comet assay and shown to be partially repaired. This work demonstrates that European whitefish could be impacted by cyanobacteria toxins due to rapid microcystin uptake, especially in the context of chronic contamination, which can occur during long bloom episodes.

Abstract
Concentration of artificial radionuclides in bodies of arctic grayling from the radioactively contaminated zone of the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of Rosatom was investigated in 2007-2010. Gamma-spectrometric analysis revealed artificial radionuclides in all the organs and tissues of fish. The isotope composition was the most diverse (60Co, 65Zn, 85Sr, 99Mo, 106Ru, 137Cs, 144Ce) in internal organs of grayling. The activity of radionuclides increased in internal organs including liver and kidney and in the content of digestive tract of grayling during winter and spring, which coincided with the change in the feeding spectrum of grayling. The trophic transfer factor of radionuclides from zoobenthos (Philolimnogammarus spp.) to whole bodies and muscles of grayling was over 1 (1.8-2.4) only for natural radionuclide 40K. The trophic transfer of artificial radionuclides (60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs) to muscles and bodies of grayling was one-two orders of magnitude less effective.

Abstract
In Canada there is increasing concern about potential effects of industrial activities on wildlife and human health. In an interdisciplinary study concentrations of inorganic (metals, metalloids) and organic (PCBs, organochlorine pesticides) contaminants, and parasitic infections of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) from Montreal and Reindeer lakes, Saskatchewan, were investigated to assess human health risk related to fish consumption. In both lakes contamination of fish with chemical substances and compounds, respectively, were very low and often close to detection limits. Lake whitefish parasite communities consisted of 15 (Montreal Lake) and 12 (Reindeer Lake) species most of which were found in the intestinal tract. Many parasite species showed seasonal differences in prevalence and/or mean intensity of infection. None of the identified parasites are known to be human-pathogenic and overall, whitefish from both locations can be considered safe and healthy food. Nevertheless, women of child-bearing age and young children should limit their consumption to 3 and 2 meals, respectively, of Reindeer Lake whitefish per week to minimize potentially harmful exposure to mercury. As well, intestines of Montreal Lake fish should be removed prior to fish consumption if large parasite cysts containing a yet unidentified cestode species are detected.

Abstract
Experimental designs for evaluating complex mixture toxicity in aquatic environments can be highly variable and, if not appropriate, can produce and have produced data that are difficult or impossible to interpret accurately. We build on and synthesize recent critical reviews of mixture toxicity using lessons learned from 4 case studies, ranging from binary to more complex mixtures of primarily polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and petroleum hydrocarbons, to provide guidance for evaluating the aquatic toxicity of complex mixtures of organic chemicals. Two fundamental requirements include establishing a dose-response relationship and determining the causative agent (or agents) of any observed toxicity. Meeting these 2 requirements involves ensuring appropriate exposure conditions and measurement endpoints, considering modifying factors (e.g., test conditions, test organism life stages and feeding behavior, chemical transformations, mixture dilutions, sorbing phases), and correctly interpreting dose-response relationships. Specific recommendations are provided.

Abstract
We performed dynamic linear modeling analysis on fish contaminant data collected from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Environment Canada to examine long-term trends of total mercury (THg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Lake Erie. Several sport fish species (walleye, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout) with differences in their diet habits, food competition strategies and foraging patterns are characterized by weakly increasing trends of their THg levels in Lake Erie after the mid- or late 1990s. Similarly, our analysis shows that the decline rates of the PCB body burdens in white bass, smallmouth bass, freshwater drum and whitefish have slowed down or have switched to weakly increasing rates over the last decade. Our analysis also provides evidence that the rainbow trout and coho salmon PCB concentrations have been decreasing steadily but the associated rates were fairly weak. The systematic shifts in energy trophodynamics along with the food web alterations induced from the introduction of non-native species, the new role of the sediments as a net contaminant source, and the potentially significant fluxes from the atmosphere stand out as some of the hypotheses proposed to explain the limited Lake Erie response in recent years to the various contamination mitigation strategies.

Abstract
Metallurgic industry is a source of serious environmental pollution related to the emission of heavy metals. Freshwater systems are focal points for pollution, acting as sinks for contaminants that may end up in fish and humans. The Pasvik watercourse in the border area between Finland, Norway and Russia is located in the vicinity of the Pechenganickel metallurgic enterprises, and the lower part of the watershed drains the Nikel smelters directly through Lake Kuetsjarvi. Heavy metal (Ni, Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb and Hg) concentrations in environment (water and sediments) and whitefish Coregonus lavaretus tissue (gills, liver, kidney and muscle) were contrasted between five lake localities situated along a spatial gradient of increasing distance (5-100 km) to the smelters. The heavy metal concentrations, in particular Ni, Cu and Cd, were highly elevated in Kuetsjarvi, but steeply declined with increasing distance to the smelters and were moderate or low in the other four localities. The study demonstrates that the majority of metal emissions and runoffs are deposited near the pollution source, and only moderate amounts of the heavy metal contaminants seem to be transported at further distances. Bioaccumulation of Hg occurred in all investigated tissues, and higher Hg concentrations in planktivorous versus benthivorous whitefish furthermore indicated that pelagic foraging is associated with higher levels of Hg biomagnification. Potential population ecology impacts of high heavy metal contaminations where mainly observed in whitefish in Kuetsjarvi, which showed depletions in growth rate, condition factor and size and age at maturation.

Abstract
Multispectral imaging has been evaluated for characterization of the concentration of a specific cartenoid pigment; astaxanthin. 59 fillets of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were filleted and imaged using a rapid multispectral imaging device for quantitative analysis. The multispectral imaging device captures reflection properties in 19 distinct wavelength bands, prior to determination of the true concentration of astaxanthin. The samples ranged from 0.20 to 4.34 g per g fish. A PLSR model was calibrated to predict astaxanthin concentration from novel images, and showed good results with a RMSEP of 0.27. For comparison a similar model were built for normal color images, which yielded a RMSEP of 0.45. The acquisition speed of the multispectral imaging system and the accuracy of the PLSR model obtained suggest this method as a promising technique for rapid in-line estimation of astaxanthin concentration in rainbow trout fillets.

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the ecological situation in the Pechora River Basin (east part of Sub-Arctic Russia) using histopathologies of fish and to relate fish health to environmental quality. This paper reports histopathological alterations of fish kidney, liver, and gills and their association with chemical contamination of the Pechora River. A variety of histopathological changes was found. Differences between studied species and sites of the Pechora River with regard to the type, prevalence, and severity of lesions were studied. The types of the lesions indicated that fish respond to both direct toxicant effects of contaminated water and sediment, and secondary stress effects caused by factors such as parasitism. The structural modifications found in this study are a result of acute damage associated with short-term exposure as much as chronic response due to long-term pollution.

Abstract
Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 209) is the main congener in the commonly used commercial flame retardant mixture, "deca-BDE". There is evidence showing that fish can debrominate BDE 209 into potentially more toxic congeners. The objective of this study was to evaluate BDE 209 uptake and its potential effects on juvenile lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). Lake whitefish were fed BDE 209 at four nominal concentrations (control, 0.1, 1, and 2 microg/g-diet) for 30 days. Livers and carcasses were analyzed for 11 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners (BDE 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, 196, 197, 206, 207, 208, and 209) and daily otolith increment width was measured as an estimate of growth before and after exposure. Four congeners (BDE 206, 207, 208, and 209) were detected in livers and carcasses. Hepatic BDE 209 concentrations in the 1 and 2 microg/g treatments were significantly higher than in the control group (1.25 and 5.80 nmol/g-lipid compared to 0.183 nmol/g-lipid). The concentration of BDE 209 detected in the tissues of the control group resulted from BDE 209 in the base diets. Concentrations of all congeners from the 1 and 2 microg/g groups were higher in livers than carcasses, indicating the liver was the primary organ of BDE 209 accumulation. Compared to the fraction in diets, the molar fraction of BDE 209 was lower in livers and carcasses, whereas the fractions of BDE 206, 207, and 208 were higher. These different distributions of PBDE congeners resulted from differential adsorption and metabolism. One congener, BDE 206, could be a major metabolite from BDE 209 debromination. Otolith increment widths were narrower in fish from the highest diet concentration administered, suggesting BDE 209 may have affected growth rates. In conclusion, this in vivo study with lake whitefish showed that BDE 209 was debrominated into lower PBDE congeners and that exposure to 2 microg/g may have affected fish growth.

Abstract
The response of six species of freshwater fishes, from the families Cyprinidae (common carp Cyprinus carpio, roach Rutilus rutilus and chub Leuciscus cephalus) and Salmonidae (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, brown trout Salmo trutta and Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus), to a standardized stressor was evaluated. A 6 h period of confinement resulted in changes to plasma cortisol, glucose, amino acid and lactate levels compared with unconfined controls. There were significant differences in the response profiles both within and between families. The cyprinid species exhibited higher and more sustained stress-induced increases in plasma cortisol and glucose than the salmonid species. In cyprinids, plasma lactate and plasma amino acid concentration showed less disturbance following stress than in salmonids. The results of the study, together with an evaluation of previously published data for eight salmonid species and six cyprinid species, support the hypothesis that differences in core elements of the stress response exist between species of fishes, and that this variation may have a systematic basis.
