Application and Future Utilization of Shellac in Orthodontics: A Systematic Review

Background: This review examines the application of shellac in orthodontics, focusing on its properties, advantages, and potential as an alternative to conventional materials. In orthodontics, where bond strength, ease of application, and removal are paramount, shellac's capabilities meet these needs while supporting environmentally friendly practices. Methods: With objectives centered on evaluating shellac's effectiveness, biocompatibility, and impact on patient outcomes, a comprehensive search across multiple databases was conducted, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. This study's selection criteria targeted studies assessing shellac's use in orthodontic applications, measuring treatment effectiveness, biocompatibility, and patient satisfaction while excluding those not directly involving orthodontic applications or lacking empirical data. Results: Through a qualitative synthesis of the extracted data-encompassing study design, sample size, treatment outcomes, and adverse effects-the findings reveal shellac's potential benefits in orthodontics, such as enhanced patient comfort and comparable treatment outcomes to traditional materials. However, the review also notes variability in study designs and outcomes, indicating the need for further research. Conclusions: This study concluded that shellac presents a promising alternative in orthodontic materials, recommending additional studies to standardize assessment methodologies and confirm its long-term advantages.

Bio-inspired and optimized interlocking features for strengthening metal/polymer interfaces in additively manufactured prostheses

Biomedical and dental prostheses combining polymers with metals often suffer failure at the interface. The weak chemical bond between these two dissimilar materials can cause debonding and mechanical failure. This manuscript introduces a new mechanical interlocking technique to strengthen metal/polymer interfaces through optimized additively manufactured features on the metal surface. To reach an optimized design of interlocking features, we started with the bio-mimetic stress-induced material transformation (SMT) optimization method. The considered polymer and metal materials were cold-cured Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and laser-sintered Cobalt-Chromium (Co-Cr), respectively. Optimal dimensions of the bio-inspired interlocking features were then determined by mesh adaptive direct search (MADS) algorithm combined with finite element analysis (FEA) and tensile experiments such that they provide the maximum interfacial tensile strength and stiffness while minimizing the stress in PMMA and the displacement of PMMA at the Co-Cr/PMMA interface. The SMT optimization process suggested a Y-shape as a more favorable design, which was similar to mangrove tree roots. Experiments confirmed that our optimized interlocking features increased the strength of the Co-Cr/PMMA interface from 2.3 MPa (flat interface) to 34.4 ± 1 MPa, which constitutes 85% of the tensile failure strength of PMMA (40.2 ± 1 MPa). STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The objective of this study was to improve metal/polymer interfacial strength in dental and orthopedic prostheses. This was achieved by additive manufacturing of optimized interlocking features on metallic surfaces using laser-sintering. The interlocking design of the features, which was a Y-shape similar to the roots of mangrove trees, was inspired by a bio-memetic optimization algorithm. This interlocking design lowered the PMMA displacement at the Co-Cr/PMMA interface by 70%, enhanced the interfacial strength by more than 12%, and increased the stiffness by 18% compared with a conventional bead design, meanwhile no significant difference was found in the toughness of both designs.

Comparative study of the shear bond strength of various veneering materials on grade II commercially pure titanium

PURPOSE

To compare the shear bond strength of various veneering materials to grade II commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty specimens of CP-Ti disc with 9 mm diameter and 10 mm height were divided into three experimental groups. Each group was bonded to heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 199), porcelain (Triceram), and indirect composite (Sinfony) with 7 mm diameter and 2 mm height. For the control group (n=10), Lucitone 199 were applied on type IV gold alloy castings. All samples were thermocycled for 5000 cycles in 5-55℃ water. The maximum shear bond strength (MPa) was measured with a Universal Testing Machine. After the shear bond strength test, the failure mode was assessed with an optic microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was carried out with a Kruskal-Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney Test.

RESULTS

The mean shear bond strength and standard deviations for experimental groups were as follows: Ti-Lucitone 199 (12.11 ± 4.44 MPa); Ti-Triceram (11.09 ± 1.66 MPa); Ti-Sinfony (4.32 ± 0.64 MPa). All of these experimental groups showed lower shear bond strength than the control group (16.14 ± 1.89 MPa). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the Ti-Lucitone 199 group and the control group, and the Ti-Lucitone 199 group and the Ti-Triceram group. Most of the failure patterns in all experimental groups were adhesive failures.

CONCLUSION

The shear bond strength of veneering materials such as heat-polymerized acrylic resin, porcelain, and indirect composite to CP-Ti was compatible to that of heatpolymerized acrylic resin to cast gold alloy.

Evaluation of two dual-functional primers and a tribochemical surface modification system applied to the bonding of an indirect composite resin to metals

We evaluated the effects of two dual-functional primers and a tribochemical surface modification system on the bond strength between an indirect composite resin and gold alloy or titanium. Disk specimens (diameter, 10 mm; thickness, 2.5 mm) were cast from type 4 gold alloy and commercially pure titanium. The specimens were wetground to a final surface finish using 600-grit silicone carbide paper. The specimens were then air-dried and treated using the following four bonding systems: (1) air-abrasion with 50-70 mum alumina, (2) system 1 + alloy primer, (3) system 1 + metal link primer, and (4) tribochemical silica/silane coating (Rocatec). A light-polymerizing indirect composite resin (Ceramage) was applied to each metal specimen and polymerized according to the manufacturer's specifications. Shear bond strengths (MPa) were determined both before and after thermocycling (4 degrees C and 60 degrees C for 1 min each for 20 000 cycles). The values were compared using analysis of variance, post hoc Scheffe tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests (alpha = 0.05). The strengths decreased after thermocycling for all combinations. For both gold alloy and titanium, the bond strength with air-abrasion only was statistically lower than that with the other three modification methods after thermocycling. Titanium exhibited a significantly higher value (13.4 MPa) than gold alloy (10.5 MPa) with the air. abrasion and alloy primer system. Treatment with the tribochemical system or air abrasion followed by treatment with dual-functional priming agents was found to be effective for enhancement of the bonding between the indirect composite and gold alloy or titanium.

Effect of laboratory procedures and thermocycling on the shear bond strength of resin-metal bonding systems

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

During fabrication or repair of removable partial dentures, resin-to-metal or resin-to-denture tooth bonds may be stressed by laboratory procedures.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of steam cleaning, boiling, ultrasonic cleaning (laboratory procedures), and thermocycling on shear bond strength of resin bonds to metal and denture teeth.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Resin-metal bonding systems and their specific veneer resins (Rocatec, Sinfony; Rocatec, Visio-Gem, HLC-BOND, Zeta LC and Ducera experimental veneer resin) were tested on a Co-Cr alloy (Wirobond C). The veneer resins were bonded to resin denture teeth. The experimental groups (n=7) were subjected to the following conditions: 24-hour storage of the specimens in air (group I, control group), storage in air and treated with simulated laboratory procedures (2 minutes steam cleaning, 15 minutes ultrasonic cleaning at room temperature, 1 hour boiling in water, group II), storage in air with thermocycling (5000 cycles, 5 degrees to 55 degrees C, group III), storage in air with laboratory procedures followed by thermocycling (group IV), and storage in air with thermocycling followed by laboratory procedures (group V). Shear strength tests (MPa) were performed with a universal testing machine until fracture. After shear bond testing, the failure mode of the resin-metal and resin-denture tooth bonds was assessed. Statistical analysis of the results was carried out with one-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni-Dunn's multiple comparisons post hoc analysis for test groups (alpha=0.05).

RESULTS

Except for Ducera/denture tooth specimens (groups III to V: 8.7 +/- 3.4-9.1 +/- 1.7; 10.8 +/- 1.9 MPa control group), the Wirobond C and denture tooth specimens (groups III, IV and V: 1.4 +/- 0.9-11.9 +/- 2.3 MPa), showed significantly lower shear bond strengths than the corresponding control groups (7.5 +/- 2.9-21.0 +/- 3.4 MPa, P<.05). The shear bond strengths of group II of Sinfony/Wirobond C (11.6 +/- 3.3 MPa, P<.0001), Visio-Gem/Wirobond C (7.4 +/- 1.9 MPa, P<0.0001), Ducera/Wirobond C (11.8 +/- 2.9 MPa, P<.0001) and of Zeta/denture tooth (3.9 +/- 1.6 MPa, P=.0005) were significantly decreased by steam, boiling, and ultrasonic procedures compared with the corresponding control groups (21.0 +/- 3.4 MPa; 14.7 +/- 4.0 MPa; 19.1 +/- 2.3 MPa; 7.5 +/- 2.9 MPa, respectively). No significant differences were noted among groups III, IV, and V. Co-Cr specimens subjected to the Rocatec system and bonded with Sinfony and HLC BOND/Zeta specimens showed cohesive failure. Adhesive failure was observed for the experimental veneer resin on the Co-Cr specimens and for all veneer resins on the denture teeth.

CONCLUSION

Simulation of laboratory procedures and thermocycling caused a significant drop in shear bond strength of metal-resin and denture tooth-resin bonds for most of the tested veneer resins. Thermocycling before shear testing had the same effect on veneer resin bond strength as the simulated laboratory procedures.

Comparison of retentive systems for composites used as alternatives to porcelain in fixed partial dentures

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The bond strength between framework metals and composites, used as alternatives to porcelain, requires further study because adhesive failures can promote microleakage, discoloration, and stains in composites.

PURPOSE

The aim of this in vitro study was to analyze and compare the tensile strength between the base metal Ni-Cr alloys: (Wirocer and Wiron 99) and 2 composites (Artglass and Solidex) with 2 types of mechanical retention (0.4-mm and 0.6-mm beads); 2 types of chemical treatment (Siloc system and Metal Photo Primer system) and the combination of both treatments on a metal framework; to verify whether these composite systems were strong enough to be used as alternatives to porcelain.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 144 specimens, cylindrical metal rods (3 mm diameter x 60 mm length), were cast in Ni-Cr alloy (Wiron 99 or Wirocer), divided into 6 equal groups corresponding to 6 types of retention: airborne particle abrasion/control (A), chemical (C), mechanical with 0.4-mm (M4) and 0.6-mm beads (M6), and chemical/mechanical with 0.4-mm (CM4) and 0.6-mm beads (CM6). Composite rings formed around the rods (6.0 mm diameter X 2.0 mm thickness) of Artglass or Solidex were light polymerized in the UniXS unit (wavelength range of 320-520 nm for 540s) according to the manufacturer's specifications. Specimens were invested, and their tensile strength was measured at fracture with an EMIC-MEM 2000 universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 2.0 mm/min and 500 kgf load cell. Statistical analysis was carried out with analysis of variance and Tukey's test at significance level P=.01.

RESULTS

The highest mean retention values were recorded for groups CM6 (63.57 MPa) and M6 (63.05 MPa). The lowest mean retention values were recorded for groups A (30.63 MPa) and C (25.07 MPa). No significant difference was found regarding the alloys used in this study (P<.01). There was a significant difference in shear strength (P<.01) between Solidex (52.33 MPa) and Artglass (43.18 MPa).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of this study, mechanical retention with 0.6-mm beads and chemical/mechanical retention with 0.6-mm beads increased the metal-composite tensile bond strength. No significant difference was found between these 2 retention systems. Chemical and airborne particle abrasion/control retentions were statistically weaker than the other types of retention tested. The retention means corresponding to the commercial-grade Ni-Cr alloys used were statistically different. The composite Solidex showed a tensile strength mean statistically higher than Artglass. All values observed were higher than that recommended for metal-ceramic dental restorative systems (25 MPa-ISO 9693).

Shear bond strength of aesthetic materials bonded to Ni-Cr alloy

OBJECTIVES

This study was undertaken to evaluate the shear bond strength of four materials used as aesthetic material bonded to Ni-Cr alloy.

METHODS

Sixty-eight alloy discs were prepared and divided equally into four groups, and received four treatments for veneering: conventional feldspathic porcelain (Noritake EX-3) and three light-cured prosthodontic composite resins (Artglass, Solidex and Targis). The aesthetic materials were applied after metal structure conditioning in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 7 days. A universal testing machine was used to measure the shear bond strength of the specimens at a cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min. Fractured specimens were examined by using both optical and scanning electron microscope.

RESULTS

The analysis of variance and Tukey's test showed that the strongest mean shear bond was obtained with Noritake EX-3 (mean shear bond strength 42.90+/-7.82 MPa). For composites, the highest mean shear bond strength was observed for Targis (12.30+/-1.57 MPa); followed by Solidex (11.94+/-1.04 MPa) and Artglass (10.04+/-0.75 MPa). Optical analysis of the fractured surfaces indicated that for Targis and Noritake EX-3 all failures were a mixture of both cohesive and adhesive patterns. As for Artglass and Solidex, the fractures were mainly adhesive in nature.

CONCLUSIONS

The Solidex system was equivalent to the Targis system in bond strength and exhibited greater strength than the Artglass system. The porcelain fused-to-metal showed considerably higher shear bond strength than the three metal-resin bonding techniques.
