Soft tissue chondroma of the oral cavity: an extremely rare tumour localized on the hard palate

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumors usually localized within the tubular bones of the extremities. Soft tissue chondromas (STCs) are rare and only few cases have been reported in the oral cavity. The present case documents the exceptional finding of a 12-year-standing STC of the hard palate of a 63-year-old man. The tumor measured approximately 6 cm in its larger size and it was radically excised through the use of a quantic resonance molecular (QRM) lancet. No recurrence was observed during 1-year follow-up. A concise review of the relevant literature is included in the present paper.

Cartilaginous choristoma of the lower lip

Choristoma is a tumor-like mass consisting of normal cells in an abnormal location. Cartilaginous choristoma, which is composed of ectopic cartilaginous tissue, very rarely presents in the oral cavity and most commonly in the tongue. Here we report an extremely rare case of cartilaginous choristoma of the lower lip.

Chondroma of the cheek: A case report

An extremely rare case of soft tissue chondroma occurring in the right cheek of a 47-year-old woman is reported. The localized nodular tumor was encapsulated and composed of hyalinized cartilage with fine calcifications. Most tumor cells were positive for vimentin and S-100 protein, but negative for cytokeratin, factor VIII, and smooth muscle actin. It seems likely that the tumor cells arise from uncommitted mesenchymal stem cells by metaplastic process.

Cartilaginous choristoma deep in the upper midline oral vestibule

The choristoma is a tumour-like mass of normal cells in an abnormal location. Intraoral cartilaginous choristoma is a rare lesion. We report on a cartilaginous choristoma arising in the upper midline oral vestibule.

Cartilaginous choristomas of the tongue: review of the literature and report of three cases

Three cases of cartilaginous choristomas of the tongue are presented. Two lesions occurred in women of 71 and 28 years of age whose lesions were located in the middle third of the dorsum. The other lesion was found on the left lateral border in a 27-year-old man. The clinical, microscopic and immunohistochemical features are described. The lesions were easily excised with no recurrence after follow-up periods of at least 6 months. The histogenesis and the differential diagnosis are discussed, and the literature is reviewed.

Soft tissue chondroma of the cheek

Soft tissue chondromas are rare benign tumours unrelated to bone that arise primarily in the distal extremities. Lesions in the soft tissues of the oral cavity are extremely rare although several chondromatous lesions have been reported in the tongue. A case is presented of a chondroma arising in the buccal mucosa. It was composed of a lobulated mass of myxoid tissue showing central areas of chondroid differentiation. Immunocytochemistry confirmed the lesion to be mesenchymal and not epithelial in origin. In the differential diagnosis it is important to exclude chondromatous change in a pleomorphic adenoma and also the possibility of a metastasis from an osseous chondrosarcoma.

Choristomas of the oral cavity: a review

The choristoma is a tumorlike mass of normal cells in an abnormal location. Intraoral choristomas have been reported under a wide variety of names. This comprehensive review of the English-language literature on oral choristomas offers a classification of these lesions, analyzes their clinical and histologic features, and discusses possible pathogeneses and treatment.

Submucosal nodular chondrometaplasia in denture wearers

In 39 denture-wearing patients in whom anterior maxillary flabby ridge tissue (prosthesis fibroma) was excised, 15.4% contained cartilaginous nodules within this tissue. The chondrometaplasia may arise due to mechanical irritation activating pluripotential mesenchymal cells; but the possibility that the cartilaginous nodules represent remnant embryologic tissue cannot be excluded.

Cartilaginous choristoma of buccal mucosa: a case report

A rare and possibly the first case of a cartilaginous choristoma of the buccal mucosa is presented. Careful examination at follow-up for over 11 months has revealed no clinical evidence of any recurrence.
