The effects of short day exposure on seasonal and circadian reproductive rhythms of female golden hamsters

Towards a neurobiology of female aggression

Although many people think of aggression as a negative or undesirable emotion, it is a normal part of many species' repertoire of social behaviors. Purposeful and controlled aggression can be adaptive in that it warns other individuals of perceived breaches in social contracts with the goal of dispersing conflict before it escalates into violence. Aggression becomes maladaptive, however, when it escalates inappropriately or impulsively into violence. Despite ample data demonstrating that impulsive aggression and violence occurs in both men and women, aggression has historically been considered a uniquely masculine trait. As a result, the vast majority of studies attempting to model social aggression in animals, particularly those aimed at understanding the neural underpinnings of aggression, have been conducted in male rodents. In this review, we summarize the state of the literature on the neurobiology of social aggression in female rodents, including social context, hormonal regulation and neural sites of aggression regulation. Our goal is to put historical research in the context of new research, emphasizing studies using ecologically valid methods and modern sophisticated techniques. Differential activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) during photoperiod induced uterine regression and recrudescence in Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus)

Siberian hamsters adapt to seasonal changes by reducing their reproductive function during short days (SD). SD exposure reduces uterine mass and reproductive capacity, but underlying cellular mechanisms remain unknown. Because matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) are important in uterine development, parturition, and postpartum remodeling, their expression in uterine tissue from Siberian hamsters undergoing photoperiod-mediated reproductive regression and recrudescence was investigated. Female hamsters were exposed to long day (LD, 16L:8D, controls) or SD (8L:16D) for 3-12 weeks (regression); a second group was exposed to SD or LD for 14 weeks and then transferred to LD for 0-8 weeks (recrudescence). Hamsters were euthanized, uteri collected, and homogenates analyzed by gelatin zymography or Western blotting for MMP and TIMP protein levels. Uterine weight decreased (67-75%) at SD weeks 12-14 and increased post-LD transfer (PT) reaching LD values by PT week 2. MMP-2, but not MMP-9 activity was reduced by SD week 12 or 14 but increased to LD levels at PT week 2. MMP-3 expression increased at SD week 9 compared to other SD and LD groups. MMP-14 and -13 protein levels decreased at SD week 3 but returned to LD levels by SD week 6. During recrudescence, MMP-3 (PT weeks 0-2), MMP-13 (PT week 4), and MMP-14 (PT weeks 2, 4) protein levels were higher than LD. TIMP-1 and 2 were present at low levels. Significant and differential variations in uterine MMP activity/expression during photoperiod-induced regression and recrudescence were observed. These changes likely reflect increases in tissue remodeling during both the adaptation to SD and the restoration of reproductive function.

Sex differences in photoperiod control of antigen-specific primary and secondary humoral immunity in Siberian Hamsters

Photoperiod was hypothesized to mediate T cell-dependent B cell production of IgM and IgG. Antigens induced production of specific immunoglobulins; serum IgM but not IgG, was higher in males in long vs. short days (16 vs. 8 h light/day) and similarly among all groups of females. A second immunization with KLH robustly enhanced serum IgM, as well as IgG; increases were blunted in short- vs. long-day males but not in females. Thus, in male but not female hamsters, winter-like short days restrain aspects of primary and secondary humoral immune responses to xenoantigens. Actions on lymphocyte activities or clonal expansion are in considerations.

Effect of photoperiod on neural estrogen and progestin receptor immunoreactivity in female Syrian hamsters

This study explored the possibility that reduced behavioral responsiveness to estradiol and progesterone in female Syrian hamsters exposed to a short photoperiod is associated with a reduction in the concentration of neural steroid receptors. The effects of long and short photoperiod (LP; SP) exposure on steroid receptor immunoreactivity were examined in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), medial tuberal region (mTu), medial preoptic area (mPOA), medial nucleus of the amygdala (mAMYG), and the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of ovariectomized hamsters. In Experiment 1, exposure to SP for ten weeks attenuated the lordosis response following sequential treatment with estradiol and progesterone. In a separate group of animals not given hormones, SP decreased the staining intensity of estrogen receptor immunoreactive (ERIR) cells in the mPOA while increasing the number of detectable ERIR cells in part of the mAMYG. In Experiment 2, SP diminished the lordosis response as it did in Experiment 1. One week later, the same females were administered estradiol systemically to induce progestin receptors (PR). Animals housed in SP showed significantly reduced progestin receptor immunoreactivity (PRIR) in the VMH, mTu, mPOA, mAMYG, and ARC. Experiment 3 examined whether the results of Experiment 2 might have been influenced by photoperiodic effects on peripheral metabolism of estradiol. Among hamsters housed in LP or SP, PRs were induced by estradiol implanted unilaterally in the medial basal hypothalamus, thus bypassing possible photoperiodic effects on peripheral estradiol availability. This treatment resulted in significantly fewer cells with detectable PRIR in the VMH and mPOA of SP females, suggesting that the photoperiodic influences on PR induction observed in Experiment 2 do not depend on alterations in the peripheral availability of estradiol.

Chemical and behavioral stimulation from females accelerates recrudescence in male Syrian hamsters exposed to short days

Interaction with female hamsters maintained under long photoperiods (LP) accelerates behavioral recrudescence in short photoperiod (SP) males. In this experiment, the authors investigated the effects of various types of female sociosexual cues on different measures of reproductive recrudescence in the male. Five groups of SP males were exposed to different female cues for 3 weeks (Weeks 12 to 15). At Week 16, males were allowed to interact with estrus females; behavioral, physiological, and fecundity measures were monitored. The results show that all measures responded in a pseudo-dose-dependent manner to the different female cues presented. SP males not exposed to any female cues and those exposed to distal visual, auditory, and volatile pheromonal cues from estrus females did not copulate, deposit sperm, or impregnate estrus females presented to them at Week 16. SP males allowed direct access to the bedding of estrus females showed marked improvements on these same reproductive measures by Week 16. However, SP males that interacted with LP females between Weeks 12 and 15 showed the greatest level of reproductive function at Week 16. These results show that the type of female sociosexual stimulation is important in accelerating reproductive recrudescence; whereas interaction with LP females may be important in accelerating behavioral recrudescence, both interaction with and exposure to the bedding of LP females may be important in accelerating physiological and reproductive success measures.

Photoperiodic and pineal influences on estrogen-stimulated behaviors in female Syrian hamsters

Three experiments investigated the effects of short photoperiod exposure on the estrogenic facilitation of locomotor activity and lordosis. In Experiment 1, ovariectomized female hamsters were administered exogenous estrogen to stimulate locomotor activity in running wheels. Estrogen was effective in the long photoperiod group but did not stimulate running-wheel activity in the short photoperiod group. In Experiment 2, the role of the pineal gland in mediating photoperiodic influences on female hamster behavior was examined. Both estrogen-induced locomotor activity and estrogen+progesterone-stimulated lordosis behavior were significantly reduced in short photoperiod females. Both these photoperiodic effects were absent in pinealectomized hamsters. Sham-pinealectomized, short photoperiod females expressed behavioral deficits; pinealectomized hamsters in the short photoperiod did not. Experiment 3 investigated lordosis only and used hormone injections rather than silastic implants to administer estrogen. The photoperiodic and pineal effects observed in Experiment 2 were replicated in Experiment 3. Additionally, the suppression of lordosis responsiveness by short photoperiod exposure was estrogen dose dependent. Photoperiodic effects were present when 2 micrograms estradiol cypionate was used but absent when higher estrogen doses were used. These findings are discussed in the context of other results that suggested photoperiodic effects on hamster lordosis were pineal independent.
