Abstract
The objectives were to evaluate the effects of exercise on ovarian folliculogenesis and related hormones in mares. Mares (n = 11) were randomly assigned into a control (non-exercised) or treatment (exercised) group. Treatment mares (n = 5) were moderately exercised for 30 min, 6 d/wk. All mares underwent daily transrectal ultrasonographic examinations and ovarian follicles > 6 mm were measured. Blood samples were collected during the first (Cycle 1) and last (Cycle 4) cycle, and serum concentrations of cortisol, LH, and FSH were determined. Mean cortisol concentrations were elevated (P < 0.05) in exercised mares, 6.29 ± 0.22 compared with 5.62 ± 0.16 ng/dL (mean ± SEM), 30 min post exercise. There were no significant differences between groups in mean FSH concentrations; however, exercised mares had lower (17.3 ± 6.4 vs 41.1 ± 5.5 ng/mL; P < 0.05) peak LH concentrations. Furthermore, exercised mares experienced a longer (24.7 ± 0.8 vs 22.2 ± 0.8 d; P < 0.05) mean interovulatory interval for all cycles combined, fewer (P < 0.05) follicles 6 to 20 mm in diameter, and an increased (P < 0.05) number of follicles >20 mm following deviation. The dominant and largest subordinate follicle in exercised mares had a greater (P < 0.05) mean diameter on the day of deviation, suggesting delayed deviation. Exercised mares also tended (P = 0.06) to have an increased number of cycles with at least two dominant follicles compared to control (62 vs 36%, respectively), indicating a decreased ability of the largest follicle to assert dominance. Under the conditions of this study, moderately exercising mares induced higher cortisol concentrations, lowered peak LH concentrations, and altered ovarian follicular dynamics.

Abstract
Twenty Simmental x Angus, half-sibling, postpubertal heifers (initial BW of 443 +/- 9 kg) were allotted randomly into 2 treatment groups to evaluate if initial BCS affects response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis to metabolic signals elicited by energy restriction and repletion. During a preliminary feeding period, diets were formulated so that each heifer in the designated treatment would reach a BCS of 5 (moderate condition; MOD) or a BCS of 7 (heavy condition; FAT). Once each heifer had reached desired BCS, diets were formulated to supply 30% of NE(m) requirements until each heifer became anestrous (serum concentrations of progesterone < 1 ng/mL; restriction period). Blood collections took place on d 1 of each period, on d 43 of energy restriction and d 44 of energy repletion, and when heifers were confirmed to recommence estrous cycles. When heifers were cycling, their estrous cycles were synchronized to ensure hormone sampling occurred during late diestrus or early proestrus. Energy restriction resulted in decreased concentrations of LH (FAT, P = 0.02; MOD, P < 0.001), IGF-1 (FAT, P < 0.001; MOD, P = 0.003), and insulin (P < 0.001); in contrast, concentrations of GH (P < 0.001) and plasma urea nitrogen (P < 0.001) increased. During repletion, LH concentration increased (P = 0.03) in MOD condition heifers but was still less (P = 0.002) than d 1 of restriction, whereas LH concentration tended to increase in FAT heifers (P = 0.06) until it was similar (P = 0.40) to d 1 of restriction. Repletion also increased concentrations of IGF-1 (P < 0.001), insulin (P < 0.001), and glucose (P < 0.001), whereas concentrations of GH (P < 0.001), NEFA (P < 0.001), and plasma urea nitrogen (P < 0.001) decreased. For both treatments, concentrations of GH after repletion were similar (FAT, P = 0.88; MOD, P = 0.10) to those on d 1 of restriction. After repletion, FAT condition heifers had decreased concentrations of IGF-1 (P < 0.001), insulin (P < 0.05), and glucose (P < 0.001), but greater concentrations of acetate (P < 0.01) and butyrate (P < 0.05), than MOD heifers. Anestrus or resumption of estrous cycles seems to be activated gradually in response to dietary manipulation, unrelated to certain metabolite changes.

Abstract
This study tested the hypothesis that endocrinological threshold levels of progesterone that induce negative feedback effects on the pulsatile and surge modes of LH secretion are different. Our approach was to examine the effects of subnormal progesterone concentrations on LH secretion. Long-term ovariectomized Shiba goats that had received implants of silastic capsules containing estradiol were divided into three groups. The high progesterone (high P) group received a subcutaneous implant of a silastic packet (50 x 70 mm) containing progesterone, and the low progesterone (low P) group received a similar implant of a small packet (25 x 40 mm) containing progesterone. The control (non-P) group received no treatment with exogenous progesterone. Blood samples were collected daily throughout the experiment for the analysis of gonadal steroid hormone levels and at 10-min intervals for 8 h on Days 0, 3, and 7 (Day 0: just before progesterone treatment) for analysis of the pulsatile frequency of LH secretion. Then estradiol was infused into the jugular vein of all animals at a rate of 3 microg/h for 16 h on Day 8 to determine whether an LH surge was induced. Blood samples were collected every 2 h from 4 h before the start of the estradiol infusion until 48 h after the start of the infusion. In each group, the mean +/- SEM concentration after progesterone implant treatment was 3.3 +/- 0.1 ng/ml for the high P group, 1.1 +/- 0.1 ng/ml for the low P group, and <0.1 ng/ml for the non-P group, concentrations similar to the luteal levels, subluteal levels, and follicular phase levels of the normal estrous cycle, respectively. The estradiol concentration ranged from 4 to 8 pg/ml after estradiol capsule implants in all groups. The LH pulse frequency was significantly (P < 0.05) suppressed on Day 3 (6.2 +/- 0.5 pulses/8 h) and on Day 7 (2.6 +/- 0.9 pulses/8 h) relative to Day 0 (9.0 +/- 0.5 pulses/8 h) in the high P group. In both the low P and non-P groups, however, the changes of pulsatile frequency of LH were not significantly different, and high pulses (7-9 pulses/8 h) were maintained on each of the 3 days they were tested. An LH surge (peak concentration, 100.3 +/- 11.0 ng/ml) occurred in all goats in the non-P group, whereas there was no surge mode secretion of LH in either the high P or the low P group. The results of this study support our hypothesis that the threshold levels of progesterone that regulate negative feedback action on the LH pulse and the LH surge are different. Low levels of progesterone, around 1 ng/ml, completely suppressed the LH surge but did not affect the pulsatile frequency of LH secretion.

Abstract
Streptozocin (STZ) induces diabetes mellitus in sheep and pigs. To test the effect of STZ in cattle, cows were given 75-150 mg STZ per kilogram of body weight. Cows receiving 150 mg/kg required euthanasia within 24 hours after infusion because of the severe systemic effects of STZ. Seven cows receiving doses of < or = 100 mg/kg had mild to marked decrease in islet immunoreactivity for insulin and in pancreatic islet density and mild to severe tubulointerstitial nephritis. Two cows receiving 75 and 85 mg/kg STZ regained their ability to produce insulin and return blood glucose to basal levels. One cow given 100 mg/kg STZ developed insulin insufficiency consistent with type I diabetes mellitus. These findings demonstrate the susceptibility of the bovine pancreas to STZ: however, severe systemic complications were encountered. Alternative dosages and methodologies should be considered in future attempts to induce diabetes in cattle using STZ.

Abstract
Insulin and glucose may be limiting factors for ovarian function in dairy cows genetically selected for high milk yield. The effects of nutrition on the intrafollicular content of insulin and glucose were investigated in Israeli Holstein dairy cattle fed a basic total mixed ration and producing 34-39kg of milk daily. In experiment 1, carried out in 11 oestrus-synchronised cows, little variation in insulin concentration was found in plasma sampled during the luteal phase, but high variation was found in plasma sampled during the follicular phase. Therefore, in order to prevent confounding the effects of diet and of phase in cycle in the following experiments, experimental diets were fed during the luteal phase of synchronised oestrus cycles. In experiment 2, designed as Latin-Square, six cows received sequentially diets containing 17.1 (control) or 19.7% of crude protein, using two sources of supplementary protein, i.e. soyabean meal (SBM) and corn gluten meal (CGM), differing in ruminal degradability and leucine content. When dry matter intake was used as covariant, plasma insulin on day 16 was 29.5 and 26.4% higher in cows fed diets containing SBM and CGM than in the control (P<0.05). In experiment 3, 17 cows were individually fed the basic diet and then switched to isoenergetic diets containing SBM (n=5), CGM (n=6) or corn grain (CG, n=6) given from day 10 to 16 of the synchronised oestrus cycle. On the eve of day 16, and in the morning of day 17, they were administered PGF(2alpha) and the content of 26 largest follicles was aspirated by using the transvaginal ovum pick-up technique. Follicles were sorted into two classes (preovulatory and subordinate) according to oestradiol concentration and the progesterone:oestradiol ratio in follicular fluid (FF). Higher concentrations of insulin (0.282 versus 0.127ng/ml, P<0.0001) and of glucose (0.614 versus 0.386g/l, P<0.002), were found in FF from preovulatory follicles. The insulin concentration in the FF of cows fed the CG diet was 26% higher than in their counterparts fed CGM (P<0.04), SBM being intermediate. Dietary effects did not reach significance in subordinate follicles. The finding that preovulatory follicular status is associated with increased intrafollicular insulin and glucose suggests that insulin is involved in follicular maturation. The nutritional effect on intrafollicular glucose and insulin may have practical implications to optimise feeding in dairy cows during phases of the oestrus cycle.

Abstract
This study was carried out in central Tanzania on a group of 45 Zebu and 37 crossbred cows which were 4 to 10 years old. At calving time, the animals were allocated to one of the 4 treatment groups. In addition to free access to grazing for all cows in the study, in group H:AR (n = 18), cows were fed a high level of concentrate supplementation (4kg/day) and calves were artificially reared; in group H:RS (n = 24), cows were fed a high level of concentrate supplementation (4kg/day) and calves were only allowed restricted suckling up until the weaning age of 6 months. In group L:AR (n = 23) cows were fed a low level of concentrate supplementation (2kg/day) and calves were artificially reared; and in group L:RS (n = 17) cows were fed a low level of concentrate supplementation (2kg/day) and calves were only allowed restricted suckling up until the weaning age of 6 months. Milk progesterone was used as a means of determining the postpartum resumption interval (PRI) and the interval from parturition to conception (PCI). The overall PRI was 47.4 +/- 0.4 days and was significantly affected by breed but not by calving season, with crossbred cows exhibiting a shorter PRI than Zebu cows. The effect of the treatments was significant, with cows in the group H:AR displaying a significantly shorter PRI than those in the other groups, while cows in group L:RS showed a significantly longer PRI than those in the other groups. The overall PCI was 149.5 +/- 3.7 days, and was not significantly affected by breed or calving season. The effect of the treatments was significant, with cows in the group H:AR having a significantly shorter PCI than cows in the other groups, while cows in group L:RS showed a significantly longer PCI than those in the other groups. Crossbred cows had higher live weights at calving (299.4 kg) than Zebu cows (272.6 kg), while all cows gained weight during the first 3 months after calving. The treatments had a significant effect on weight gain, with cows in the group H:AR gaining significantly more weight than those in the other groups. Cows which had high live weights at calving exhibited significantly shorter PRI and PCI than the lighter cows. Animals which had gained more than 5 kg during the first month after calving, or which had gained more than 8 kg during the first 3 months after calving, showed significantly shorter PRI and PCI than cows which had gained less weight. The results show that the calf rearing system and the level of feed supplementation interact with each other and can influence the postpartum anoestrous period in Zebu and Zebu crossbred cattle. Increasing the level of nutrition in restricted suckling cows tended to improve the postpartum anoestrous period, but the positive effects of supplementation could not completely compensate for the negative effects of suckling.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine whether organically complexed Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn would improve the reproductive performance and milk and milk component production in lactating dairy cows that began receiving bovine somatotropin in the ninth week of lactation. Holstein (n = 50) and Jersey (n = 10) cows were blocked by breed, lactation number, and incidence of retained fetal membranes. Two diets assigned within blocks and fed from parturition until 154 d of lactation were control or control supplemented daily with 26 mg of Co as Co glucoheptonate, 125 mg of Cu as Cu-Lys, 199 mg of Mn as Mn-Met, and 359 mg of Zn as Zn-Met. Cows were fitted with electronic pressure-sensing devices in the second week of lactation for detection of estrus. Ovarian structures were determined via transrectal ultrasonography at 7-d intervals from parturition until observation of the first corpus luteum. Blood samples were taken at 7-d intervals and analyzed for plasma concentrations of progesterone, insulin, and urea nitrogen. Onset of luteal activity was identified by progesterone concentrations > or = 1 ng/ml. Retained fetal membranes increased days to first estrus (detected via electronic estrous detection), first luteal activity, and first corpus luteum in control cows but not in supplemented cows. Days to first observed estrus were greater for control cows than for supplemented cows. Days to first service, days open, days from first service to conception, services per conception, milk yield, milk components, and somatic cell counts were similar for control and supplemented cows. Supplementation with complexed trace minerals effectively reduced days to first estrus.
