Abstract
Introduction There is a general paucity of research describing the relationship between racial and ethnic discrimination (RED) and coping strategies on use of little filtered cigars and cigarillos (LCCs) across racial and ethnic identities. This research sought to unravel some of the complex, multilayered experiences of RED and subsequent coping strategies to examine the impact on LCC use. Methods Data come from a cross-sectional survey conducted among a nationally representative sample of U.S. young adults (n = 1,178) in May 2022. Respondents were asked about their exposure to LCC marketing (systemic RED), interpersonal experiences of RED, coping strategies, and use of LCCs as-sold (tobacco only) or as a blunt (with marijuana). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine odds of LCC use examining systemic and interpersonal RED and the relationship between emotion-focused and problem-focused coping strategies among those who have experienced RED. Results Exposure to systemic RED was associated with increased odds of blunt use. Interpersonal experiences of RED were associated with increased odds of LCC use as-sold and as blunts. Among those who experienced any RED, the impact of problem-focused and emotion-focused coping was differential across racial and ethnic identities in the impact on LCC use modality. Conclusion Systemic and interpersonal RED are independently associated with LCC use. There are considerable differences in how young adults cope with RED which necessitates additional research to further elucidate the complex pathways between RED and product use to more effectively inform strategies to address the undeniable racial and ethnic inequities in tobacco-related health outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tobacco product usage patterns vary significantly across different segments of the population. Combustible tobacco product usage decreased from 19.3% to 12.5%, while electronic cigarette (ECIG) use rose from 1.8% to 3.7% for the US population from 2010 to 2020. However, age-specific estimates differ between younger and older adults. It is possible there are latent subpopulations within American adults. METHOD Data from Wave 6 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health survey (PATH, N = 30,516) were analyzed. Participants were classified as a member of Generation Z (N = 10,920), Millennials (N = 10,450), Generation X (N = 6122), or Baby Boomers (N = 3024) via a 6-level ordinal variable collected by PATH. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified distinct groups based on 8 tobacco use variables. RESULTS Analysis suggests that a 4-class solution provides the optimal solution for the entire sample. These classes comprised of a low-use class, a high-use class, ECIG Plus (defined as ECIG use with less probability of other tobacco product use), and a conventional user class, defined as high probability on conventional tobacco products. A 4-class solution also provided optimal fit for each generation, though the classes were defined differently. DISCUSSION Understanding tobacco use patterns across different classes is crucial for public health interventions. The discovery of a possible class of social users among Generation Z and Millennials suggests that targeted interventions tailored to the social contexts and behaviors of younger generations may be effective while pharmacological treatments may be more efficacious for Baby Boomers.

Abstract
Background: Cigar smoking poses significant public health challenges due to its rising prevalence and associated health risks. However, research on cigar use in China remains limited. This study investigates the prevalence, demographic characteristics, and key factors associated with cigar use among Chinese adults. Methods: We analyzed data from the 2018-2019 China Health Literacy Survey, including 86,701 participants aged 20-69 years. Multistage stratified sampling was employed, and logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for factors associated with cigar use. Weighted data were applied to ensure national representation. Results: Of the 86,701 respondents, 1025 participants reported having used cigars, including 248 exclusive cigar users and 777 dual users of cigars and other tobacco products. Cigar use was significantly higher among men (1.93%) than women (0.05%). Most users were aged 50-59, with a mean age of 49.3 years. Factors associated with cigar use among men included higher education (for college and higher, OR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.42-2.30), lower household income (for income < 20,000, OR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.08-1.53), poor self-reported health (OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.15-1.83), and severe nicotine dependence (FTND ≥ 7 points, OR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.67-2.61). Cigar use prevalence showed notable regional variation, with the highest rates observed in northern and eastern provinces. Interpretation: The estimated number of cigar users in China is approximately 10.46 million. Male cigar users often represent a unique demographic: "knowledgeable but economically marginalized" individuals, characterized by higher education but lower economic status. Tailored tobacco control measures addressing regional disparities, socioeconomic factors, and marketing-driven misconceptions about cigars are essential to reduce public health impacts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People who smoke cigars often have misperceptions about the associated risks, contributing to rises in smoking rates. This study investigates the perceived warning effectiveness (PWE) of health warning labels (HWLs) on cigar packages. We tested the impact of warning type and warning size in the HWLs on PWE and other health outcomes. DATA AND METHODS In a between-subjects experimental design, participants (n=809) who used little cigars or cigarillos in the past 30 days were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: text-only at 30% size, pictorial+text warning at 30% size, text-only at 50% size and pictorial+text warning at 50% size. In each condition, participants rated six cigarillo HWLs on PWE, self-reported learning, thinking about risks, new knowledge, perceived enjoyment and negative affect. Reactance to the labels was also measured. Data were analysed with mixed-effects models. RESULTS Pictorial+text cigarillo HWLs were deemed more effective than text-only HWLs in PWE (b=0.34, SE=0.08, p<0.001), self-reported learning (b=0.20, SE=0.08, p=0.01), thinking about risks (b=0.18, SE=0.08, p=0.03) and new knowledge (b=0.34, SE=0.12, p<0.01). They also elicited more negative affect than text-only warnings (b=0.39, SE=0.08, p<0.001). Warning size did not impact outcomes, and neither warning type nor size predicted perceived enjoyment of smoking cigarillos or reactance to the warnings. CONCLUSION Including images with text warning statements for cigarillos can increase PWE. Our findings provide important insights for the US Food and Drug Administration and international regulatory agencies in designing new HWLs for cigars that can more effectively communicate smoking risks, address misinformation and potentially reduce cigar smoking.

Abstract
Cigars and cigarillos are emerging as popular tobacco alternatives to cigarettes. However, these products may be equally harmful to human health than cigarettes and are associated with similar adverse health effects. We used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to extensively characterize the microbial diversity and investigate differences in microbial composition across 23 different products representing three different cigar product categories: filtered cigar, cigarillo, and large cigar. High throughput sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region of the 16 s rRNA gene revealed 2124 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs). Our findings showed that the three categories of cigars differed significantly in observed richness and Shannon diversity, with filtered cigars exhibiting lower diversity compared to large cigars and cigarillos. We also found a shared and unique microbiota among different product types. Firmicutes was the most abundant phylum in all product categories, followed by Actinobacteria. Among the 16 genera shared across all product types were Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Pantoea. Nine genera were exclusively shared by large cigars and cigarillos and an additional thirteen genera were exclusive to filtered cigars. Analysis of individual cigar products showed consistent microbial composition across replicates for most large cigars and cigarillos while filtered cigars showed more inter-product variability. These findings provide important insights into the microbial diversity of the different cigar product types.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cigarette and little cigar/cigarillo (LCC) dual use is popular among young people and poses a substantial health risk. What remains unclear is the abuse liability of LCCs vs. cigarettes, LCCs' substitutability for cigarettes, and the influence of flavors on the abuse liability and substitutability of LCCs. METHODS Sixty-five young adults (18-34 years) who dual use completed hypothetical purchase tasks to measure consumption of usual brand cigarettes and LCCs in 24 hours at increasing prices (demand), and LCC consumption at increasing cigarette prices (substitution). Three demand indices were calculated from raw data: breakpoint (price after which consumption reaches 0), Omax (maximum daily expenditure), and Pmax (price at maximum expenditure). Two indices were estimated using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling: intensity (consumption when free) and price-sensitivity (rate of decline in consumption as price increases). Substitution, and associations of flavored use with demand and substitution, were estimated using linear mixed models. RESULTS Results indicated similar abuse liability for LCCs and cigarettes. Intensity was greater for cigarettes, but price-sensitivity was similar. Flavored LCC use was associated with lower price-sensitivity and greater intensity than unflavored. LCCs were significant substitutes for cigarettes, but the effect was small. Flavored use was not associated with substitution. CONCLUSIONS Among young adults who dual use, LCCs and cigarettes had similar abuse liability, and those who used flavored had higher demand for their LCCs. A flavored cigar ban, as well as targeted prevention and cessation services for those who smoke flavored LCCs, may be important for reducing dual use in young adults. IMPLICATIONS Cigarette and LCC dual use remains high among young adults. Using hypothetical purchase tasks with young adults who dual use, LCCs had abuse liability similar to cigarettes, but were only modest substitutes for cigarettes. Participants who used flavored LCCs reported greater abuse liability than those who used unflavored, but not greater substitution for cigarettes. Prevention and cessation services are needed to target LCCs in young people, particularly those smoking flavored products. A flavored cigar ban may help to reduce their demand.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Flavors contribute to the appeal of tobacco products, but less is known about flavors in cigar products. The current study is the first to focus on characterizing the use and perceptions of flavors in cigar products among pregnant women. METHODS Pregnant women (N = 124) reported their use, preferences (liking, attractiveness, smoothness, interest), perceptions of harm (general, pregnancy-specific, fetal), and postpartum intention to use eight flavor categories (menthol/mint, spices, fruit, chocolate, alcohol, other beverages, candy/sweet, tobacco). We utilized correspondence analysis of contingency tables to investigate clustering of preferences and perceptions of flavors across the sample, and examined how preferences and perceptions of flavors may differ based on history of cigar use (none vs. lifetime vs. prenatal). RESULTS Overall, 37% reported never trying cigars, 51% reported lifetime use, and 12% reported prenatal use. Fruit (37%), tobacco (36%), and alcohol (14%) were the most common cigar flavors participants reported ever trying. Correspondence analysis revealed clustering in preferences for alcohol, fruit, and candy flavors compared to other flavors, and revealed lower intentions to use menthol/mint and tobacco flavors compared to other flavors. Participants who reported prenatal cigar use also reported more positive perceptions and greater intentions to use (1) spice and alcohol flavors compared to those who reported lifetime use (ps < .05); and (2) spice, alcohol, fruit, and tobacco cigar flavors compared to participants reporting never using cigars (ps < .04). CONCLUSIONS Regulations to restrict the availability of flavors, especially fruit, spice, and alcohol, may reduce the appeal and use of cigar products in pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES This study examined young adults' tobacco use transitions based on their past 30-day use states, and identified factors associated with their transitions. METHODS Participants (N = 12377) were young adults aged 18-29 years at Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. Self-reported tobacco use states were categorized by the number of past-month use days (0, 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-30 days) for cigarettes, electronic cigarettes [e-cigarettes], traditional cigars, filtered cigars, cigarillos, smokeless tobacco (SLT), and hookah. Multistate Markov models examined transitions between use states across Waves 1-5 of unweighted PATH data and multinomial logistic regressions examined predictors of transitions. RESULTS Most young adults remained nonusers across adjacent waves for all products (88%-99%). Collapsed across waves, transitioning from use at any level to nonuse (average 46%-67%) was more common than transitioning from nonuse to use at any level (average 4%-10%). Several factors that predicted riskier patterns of use (i.e., transitioning to use and/or remaining a user across adjacent waves) were similar across most products: male, Black, Hispanic, lower education levels, and lower harm perceptions. In contrast, other factors predicted riskier patterns for only select products (e.g., e-cigarette and SLT use among Whites). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Few sampled young adults escalated their tobacco use over time, and escalations for many products were predicted by similar factors. SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE Prevention and regulatory efforts targeted towards adolescents should continue, but also be expanded into young adulthood. These same efforts should consider both shared and unique factors that influence use transitions.

Abstract
This study assessed the hypothetical impact of flavored cigar sales restrictions on cigar smoking among Black young adult cigar smokers (ages 21-29). Forty in-depth interviews were conducted in 2020. Interviews were independently coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. When asked how they would smoke cigars given a flavor sales restriction, half of participants reported they would smoke in the same way, a third would stop or reduce smoking, and a few were unsure of what they would do. Cigar smoking outcome expectancies, preference for flavors, and perceived addictiveness of cigar products may predict cigar smoking change given flavor sales restrictions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Flavorings in cigars increase their appeal, mask the harsh taste of tobacco, and may hinder successful cigar smoking cessation; however, limited evidence has examined whether flavors are associated with short- or long-term cigar smoking cessation. AIMS AND METHODS Using restricted data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study Waves 1-5, we examined whether flavored cigar use was associated with 30-day-plus and 1-year-plus cigar smoking cessation among US adults. Multivariable discrete-time survival models were fit to a nationally representative sample of US adult (18+) respondents who had a current, established cigar use, smoked five or more days in the past 30 days, and did not exclusively smoke traditional premium cigars at baseline. Models adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, income, cigar and cigarette smoking intensity, and blunt use. RESULTS At baseline, 44.6% of respondents (n = 674) were 18-34 years old, 75.0% were male, 56.7% were non-Hispanic White, 78.9% had household incomes of <$50,000, and 56.2% smoked flavored cigars. In fully adjusted models, flavored cigar use was associated with a lower risk of 30-day-plus (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.60, 0.97) but not 1-year-plus cigar smoking cessation (HR = 0.81, 95% = 0.62, 1.05). CONCLUSIONS We found that flavored cigar use was associated with a lower risk of short-term but not long-term cigar smoking cessation. More work is needed to understand the dynamics of cigar smoking transitions, including initiation, cessation, and relapse, particularly in larger cohorts and among those who exclusively use cigars or dual-use cigars and cigarettes. IMPLICATIONS As local and some state jurisdictions continue to adopt partial or complete bans of flavored cigar products and the United States Food and Drug Administration considers a national ban of all characterizing flavors in cigars, there is a need for more longitudinal work examining the associations between flavorings in cigars and short and long-term cigar-smoking behaviors, including but not limited to initiation, cessation, intensity of use, and relapse, particularly in diverse cohorts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Massachusetts legislature passed An Act Modernizing Tobacco Control in November 2019 to restrict retail sales of flavored commercially manufactured tobacco products including menthol products, increase penalties for violating the law's provisions, and provide health insurance coverage for tobacco treatment. AIMS AND METHODS This study explores key informants' perceptions of intended and unintended impacts of implementation of the 2019 Massachusetts statewide law through a health equity and racial justice lens. We conducted in-depth interviews with 25 key informants from three key informant groups (public health officials and advocates, clinicians, and school staff) between March 2021 and April 2022. Using deductive codes on unintended impacts of the implementation of the law's policies, we conducted a focused analysis to identify impacts that were perceived and observed by informants from different key informant groups. RESULTS Perceived or observed impacts of the law were identified across multiple levels by key informants and included concerns related to three broad themes: 1) intended impacts on health equity and racial justice, 2) ongoing availability of restricted products undermining the intended impact of the law, and 3) inequitable targeting by the policies and enforcement among communities of color. CONCLUSIONS Future evaluation is needed to assess the intended and unintended impacts of implementation of the Massachusetts law to maximize the potential of the policies to reduce tobacco-related health disparities. We discuss implications and recommendations for achieving a national policy and equitable enforcement of flavored tobacco sales restrictions. IMPLICATIONS This qualitative study among 25 key informants including public health and tobacco control advocates, clinicians, and school staff obtained perspectives of intended and unintended health equity and racial justice impacts of the 2019 Massachusetts An Act Modernizing Tobacco Control. Findings and recommendations from this study can inform monitoring efforts to assess the law's impacts in Massachusetts and the adoption of similar flavored tobacco sales restrictions and other tobacco control policies in other states to maximize the health equity benefits and minimize unintended impacts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the US, cigar warning label standards are less stringent than cigarette warning requirements and are not uniformly required; research is needed about warning efficacy in promoting cigar risk beliefs, discouraging use and supporting public health. METHODS Using data from the PATH Study (Wave 5), we analyzed associations between noticing cigar warnings and perceived harm from cigar use, frequency of thinking about harms, and effects of warnings labels. RESULTS Among adults who smoke cigars, respondents noticing warnings at least sometimes (vs. never/rarely) had higher odds of thinking about harms of their tobacco use often/very often (cigarillos 30% vs. 19%, p <.001, aOR 1.80 [1.27, 2.56]); filtered cigars: 43% vs. 16%, p <.001, aOR 3.81 [2.50, 5.82]) and of reporting that smoking cigars is very/extremely harmful (cigarillos: 59% vs. 46%, p =.001, aOR 1.45 [1.05, 1.99]). A substantial majority found cigar warnings to be very/extremely believable (cigarillos: 63%, filtered cigars: 59%, traditional cigars: 65%), with 16%, 24% and 12% respectively reporting past-30-day warning avoidance. Those noticing warnings at least sometimes (vs. rarely) had higher rates of reporting that warnings sometimes/often/very often stopped them from having a cigar in the past 30 days (cigarillos: 36% vs. 10%; filtered cigars: 50% versus 6%; traditional cigars: 30% versus 9%; p's < 0.001) and that warnings made them somewhat/a lot more likely to quit smoking (cigarillos: 55% versus 37%, p <.01; filtered cigars: 55% versus 26%, p <.001; traditional cigars: 39% vs. 24%, p <.05). CONCLUSIONS Results support potential public health benefits of mandating the presence and increasing salience of cigar warning labels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many people remove the tobacco leaf from cigars and replace it with cannabis (ie, blunts), but few studies have examined whether messages about the risks of cigars, like warnings on cigar packages, can affect blunt use. METHODS Participants were 438 U.S. adults who reported past 30-day cigar use and ever blunt use, recruited from a probability-based national panel to take an online survey. In a 2 × 2 experiment with a between-subjects design, we manipulated two cigar warning characteristics: (1) warning type: text-only versus pictorial (ie, text + image) and (2) warning size: 30% (smaller) versus 50% (larger) of the product package. Participants then viewed six different warnings on a fictious cigarillo package, within their randomly assigned condition. After evaluating all stimuli, participants were asked the extent to which the warnings discouraged them from wanting to use cigars to smoke cannabis (ie, blunt perceived warning effectiveness). Response options ranged from "not at all" (1) to "a great deal" (5). RESULTS We observed no main effects of warning type or size on blunt perceived warning effectiveness. However, a significant interaction existed between the two experimental manipulations (p = .009). Whereas adding images made no difference to blunt perceived warning effectiveness when warnings were smaller (simple effect: -0.22, p = .28), images mattered for larger warnings. Specifically, adding images increased blunt perceived warning effectiveness when warnings were 50% of the product package (simple effect: 0.52, p = .008). CONCLUSIONS This experiment provides preliminary evidence that larger pictorial cigar warnings may discourage blunt use relative to larger but text-only warnings. IMPLICATIONS Blunts, which are hollowed out cigars with tobacco leaf wrappers that are filled with cannabis leaf, are one of the most common ways in which tobacco and cannabis are used simultaneously, yet few studies have examined whether messages about the risks of cigars can affect blunt use. We conducted an online experiment concerning the perceived effectiveness of cigar warnings among people who use blunts recruited from a probability-based panel. Results provide novel, preliminary evidence that larger pictorial cigar warnings may discourage blunt use, relative to larger but text-only warnings. More research evaluating cigar warnings on blunt use is needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Food and Drug Administration has the authority to set a minimum for cigar pack size, a product feature linked to price. This study examined the effects of cigarillo package size and price on young adults' smoking and purchase intentions. DESIGN Young adults (n=1032) 18-30 years old who smoked cigarillos in the past 12 months completed an online 3×2 within-subjects experiment testing the effects of cigarillo pack size (1, 2, 5) and price (actual price, standardised price per stick) on intentions to purchase and smoke cigarillos. We modelled the main effects and interactions of pack size and price on intentions to buy and smoke cigarillos overall and by cigarillo use frequency. RESULTS Intentions to buy and smoke were strongest for lower priced singles and two packs compared with higher priced five packs. Under standardised price conditions, participants preferred larger packs, but under actual pricing conditions smaller packs, especially two packs, were preferred. Participants who smoked cigarillos less than monthly were more likely to buy and smoke the least expensive products (buy: singles actual price adjusted OR (aOR)=4.51, 95% CI 3.76 to 5.42; two packs actual price aOR=9.76, 95% CI 8.11 to 11.75; five packs standardised price aOR=3.17, 95% CI 2.89 to 3.48) with the strongest preference for two packs and singles. CONCLUSIONS Young adult cigarillo smokers prefer smaller packs in conditions where pricing incentivises smaller packs. Minimum pack size policies may reduce the appeal of cigarillos among young adults, especially less frequent cigarillo smokers. Pack size policy should take into consideration price, and ideally these two factors should be addressed together.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In 2009, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act prohibited flavored cigarettes but allowed for flavored cigars. Since, there has been a 34% increase in youth cigar use and widened racial disparities. State and local jurisdictions have increasingly enacted flavored tobacco product sales restrictions. As more jurisdictions consider implementing flavor restrictions, it is important to understand their effect on tobacco markets that have high flavor proliferation, including the cigar market. AIMS AND METHODS This study uses data from Truth Initiative's flavor policy database and NielsenIQ retailer scanners for California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York. We use a three-way fixed-effect model to assess the impact of the percentage of the population covered by a flavored cigar sales restriction on per capita unit sales of cigars. RESULTS We find that population coverage by cigar sales restrictions was significantly associated with decreases in per capita cigar sales. More specifically, a 25% increase in the percentage of the population covered by a flavored cigar sales restriction was associated with a decrease in per capita all cigar sales of 15%-19%, 4%-10% for large cigars, 17%-21% for cigarillos, and 2%-41% for little cigars. CONCLUSION Flavored cigar sales restrictions are an effective policy to reduce per capita cigar sales. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s proposed product standards would increase population covered by a flavored cigar sales restriction to 100%, leading to potential significant reductions in cigar sales, especially little cigar, and cigarillo sales. This may also substantially reduce youth cigar use and racial disparities in cigar use. IMPLICATIONS In April 2022, the U.S. FDA published a proposed rule to prohibit characterizing flavors in all cigars and menthol cigarettes. Besides this proposed rule, there has been little federal action to date to reduce sales of flavored cigars. However, as of March 31, 2022, Massachusetts and 333 localities across 10 states have enacted policies that restrict the sale of flavored cigars and other tobacco products. We find that population coverage by cigar sales restrictions is significantly associated with decreases in per capita cigar sales.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the use patterns, health perceptions, and cardiopulmonary health effects of cigars. DATA SOURCES PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for peer-reviewed articles published between June 2014 and February 2021. Search keywords included cigars, cigarillos, little cigars, and cardiopulmonary health outcomes. STUDY SELECTION Of 782 papers identified, we excluded non-English articles, review articles, commentaries, and those without empirical data on cigars. Three coders independently reviewed all articles and compared codes to resolve discrepancies. 93 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included. DATA SYNTHESIS Cigars have evolved from premium cigars to encompass little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs). LCCs are available in an array of flavors and at a price advantage, and as a result, are used by different groups compared to premium cigars. LCCs are more frequently used by youth, young adults, and those who identify as Black/African American. LCCs are often used in combination with other tobacco products, alcohol, and cannabis. Despite limited regulation, cigars generate smoke of a similar composition as cigarettes. Among the studies identified, evidence suggests that cigar use is associated with cardiovascular and pulmonary toxicity. Higher all-cause and cancer-related mortalities are associated with cigar use, particularly with more frequent and deeper inhalation, compared to non-tobacco users. CONCLUSIONS LCCs are used more frequently by at-risk groups compared to premium cigars. Recent studies evaluating cigar cardiopulmonary health effects are limited but suggest cigars have similar health risks as conferred by cigarette smoking. With the use of LCCs and targeted marketing on the rise among high-risk groups, there is a critical need for continued research in this area.

Abstract
Cigar smoking remains a public health issue in the United States (U.S.), with a heterogeneous prevalence based on sociodemographic characteristics. Nationally representative data suggest changes in cigar smoking over time, with some evidence for sociodemographic differences. Using data from the 2002-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), the prevalence of past-30-day cigar smoking was examined overall and stratified by sociodemographic characteristics; joinpoint regression examined the trends. Logistic regression analyses identified the correlates of cigar smoking using 2020 NSDUH data. From 2002 to 2004, the prevalence of cigar smoking remained stable (5.33-5.73%), but declined from 2004 to 2019 (5.73-4.29%). Cigar smoking declined in some periods between 2002-2019 among the non-Hispanic White, Hispanic, ages 12-17, ages 18-20, ages 21-25, age ≥ 35, and male subgroups, but remained unchanged among the non-Hispanic Other, ages 26-34, and female subgroups. Cigar smoking increased among non-Hispanic Black persons overall from 2002 to 2019 (6.67-8.02%). Past-30-day cigarette smoking and drug or alcohol use disorder was associated with an increased likelihood of cigar use, while female sex was associated with a decreased likelihood of cigar use, across all age groups. Though a decline in the prevalence of past-30-day cigar smoking is seen in the general population, the same is not evident among all sociodemographic subgroups. Our findings have the potential to inform tobacco cessation efforts within clinical practice, as well as regulatory efforts to reduce cigar use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little is known about cigar use among women of reproductive age, especially potential differences relating to the use of premium versus non-premium cigars. AIMS AND METHODS Using 2010-2019 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, rates and trends in premium and non-premium cigar use were determined among women of reproductive age (18-49; n = 5651). Weighted sociodemographic characteristics, substance co-use, patterns of use, and health indicators were compared between women using premium versus non-premium cigars. RESULTS Among reproductive-aged women who smoked cigars in the past 30 days, 4.9% reported use of premium cigar brands. The most commonly used premium brands were Romeo y Julieta, Cohiba, and Macanudos. Women who used premium versus non-premium cigars were less likely to identify as non-Hispanic black (16.5% vs. 35.5%), more likely to have household income >$50 000 (54.2% vs. 26.6%), and less likely to report past 30-day marijuana (28.7% vs. 55.7%) or blunt use (26.0% vs. 53.9%; ps < .001). Women who used premium cigars also reported later age of onset of cigar use (24.1 vs. 20.3 years; p < .001) and smoked fewer cigars in the last 30 days (9.8 vs. 2.3 days; p < .001). Trend analysis revealed that although rates of past 30-day premium cigar use remained consistent from 2010 (4.7%) to 2019 (4.9%), prevalence decreased from 6.6% in 2017 to 2.8% in 2018 before increasing to 4.9% in 2019. CONCLUSIONS Understanding premium and non-premium cigar use among reproductive-age women, an understudied vulnerable population, will provide critical data to the Food and Drug Administration to inform policy and regulatory decisions. IMPLICATIONS The current study revealed prevalence of ~5% premium cigar use among women of reproductive age who smoke cigars, and evidence for consistency in women's rates of premium cigar use across time. Women who used premium versus non-premium cigars were more likely to identify as non-Hispanic white, older, and of higher socioeconomic status were in better health and less likely to co-use cigarettes and marijuana, but more likely to co-use alcohol. Consideration of reproductive age and pregnant women as uniquely vulnerable populations is warranted in the development of regulations regarding premium and non-premium cigars. Comprehensive regulation of cigars (both premium and non-premium) may offer the potential to positively impact women's health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Few studies have addressed the use patterns and characteristics of the past 30 days of premium versus non-premium cigar smokers. AIMS AND METHODS We pooled 10 years of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH; 2010-2019) to evaluate use patterns and demographic and tobacco use characteristics of premium and non-premium cigar smokers ages 12 years and older in the U.S. cigar-type was manually coded as premium or non-premium according to the brand used most often. RESULTS Between 2010 and 2019, 4.7% (95% CI = 4.6-4.8) of individuals aged 12 and older currently smoked cigars (past-30-day use). Smoking premium cigars (0.9% [95% CI = 0.8-0.9]) was less prevalent than smoking non-premium cigars (3.0% [95% CI = 2.9-3.1]). Although current non-premium cigar smoking prevalence steadily declined over the years, current premium cigar smoking prevalence remained stable. Premium cigar smokers were more likely to be older (≥25 years), male, non-Hispanic white, heterosexual, college educated, living in a large metro area, and to have income above 200% of the poverty threshold compared to non-premium users (p < .05). Additionally, past-30-day premium cigar smokers were less likely than non-premium users to initiate cigar smoking before the age of 18 years, smoke cigars frequently or daily, smoke cigarettes, or use marijuana (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Overall, premium cigar smoking is less prevalent than non-premium cigar smoking, especially among populations such as youth, racial/ethnic and sexual minorities, and low socioeconomic individuals. Premium cigar smokers tend to smoke infrequently and initiate cigars later in life compared with non-premium smokers. Study results can inform recommendations for regulating premium cigars. IMPLICATIONS This study found that between 2010 and 2019, there are meaningful differences in the use patterns and characteristics of past-30-day premium versus non-premium cigar smokers in the United States. Premium cigars comprise a small share of the market compared to other cigar types and are less likely to be used by youth and other tobacco control priority groups (eg, racial/ethnic minorities and individuals with low socioeconomic statuses) that bear a disproportionate burden of risk and harm from using tobacco products. Additionally, most premium cigar users smoke them only occasionally. However, it is important to continue to monitor premium cigar use, as these patterns could shift because of factors like changes in marketing practices, consumer awareness, and product prices. Tobacco policy changes may also alter the patterns and trends of premium cigar use over time. A greater, more comprehensive understanding of premium cigars' physical characteristics, patterns of use, user perceptions, tobacco industry marketing strategies, and health effects will together help to inform cigar-related regulations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Improved understanding of health conditions associated with premium cigar smoking can inform efforts to reduce cigar use. This paper extends findings commissioned for the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report on premium cigars. AIMS AND METHODS We pooled 2010-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health data to evaluate cross-sectional associations between premium cigar smoking and mental health and substance use conditions among U.S. adults. A series of logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption compared odds of each condition associated with past-month premium cigar smoking relative to past-month nonpremium cigar smoking, never tobacco use, and current established cigarette smoking. RESULTS Premium cigar smoking was associated with lower adjusted odds of past month serious psychological distress, past year major depressive episode, and cannabis and illicit drug dependence relative to nonpremium cigar and cigarette smoking; however, higher odds of alcohol and cannabis dependence were observed relative to never tobacco use, and lower odds of alcohol dependence were observed relative to current cigarette smoking but not current nonpremium cigar smoking. CONCLUSIONS We observed considerable variation in both magnitude and direction of associations between premium cigar smoking and mental health and substance use indicators depending on the condition and reference group to which premium cigar smoking was compared. IMPLICATIONS Premium cigar smoking frequently cooccurs with cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption, thus potential health correlates must be considered in appropriate context. We observed considerable variation in direction and magnitude of association depending on the health condition and reference population, as well as potential for reverse causality and residual confounding in this cross-sectional analysis. As the tobacco landscape continues to evolve, rigorous scientific studies that incorporate clear differentiation of cigar type, measures of cumulative use, and temporal data collection are necessary to fully evaluate the health effects of premium cigar smoking and effectively inform Food and Drug Administration regulation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Black communities are targeted by more cigarette advertisements than White communities and racial discrimination among Black people is related to cigarette use. However, little is known about these factors with non-cigarette tobacco product use among Black adults. Therefore, this study assessed the association of non-cigarette advertisement exposure and racial discrimination with use of non-cigarette tobacco products among Black adults. AIMS AND METHODS Black adults (n = 533) from The Family and Community Health Study in 2016 were asked if they had seen advertisements for e-cigarettes, snus pouches, filtered cigars, large cigars, cigarillos, dissolvable tobacco, smokeless tobacco, hookah, and tobacco pipe and if they used these in the past month. For products with the highest past month use and significant correlations with advertisement exposure, separate logistic regression models were performed that evaluated the association between advertisement exposure, racial discrimination, and non-cigarette tobacco product use while controlling for cigarette use, sex, socioeconomic status, and age. RESULTS Use of cigarillos, large cigars, and hookah were higher than other non-cigarette tobacco products assessed. Logistic regressions revealed that more advertisement exposure in the past month was associated with higher odds of using cigarillos, large cigars, and hookah (p < .01). More experiences of racial discrimination were associated with past month cigarillo use, but not hookah or large cigars (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS Non-cigarette tobacco advertisement exposure was associated with the use of non-cigarette tobacco products. Experiences of racial discrimination were associated with the most used non-cigarette tobacco product among Black adults, cigarillos. IMPLICATIONS This is the first time that a specific type of cigar (ie cigarillos) has been associated with experiences of racial discrimination among Black adults. Efforts to reduce non-cigarette tobacco marketing and eradicate exposure to racial discrimination among Black adults may aid in eliminating tobacco-related health disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco price promotions may prompt tobacco trials among youth. We assessed whether receiving price promotions for any tobacco, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cigars was associated with product use progression. METHODS The analysis included a nationally representative sample of youth never tobacco users (aged 12-16; n=9405) from wave 4 (2016-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. We assessed past-year receipt of price promotions and use progression (initiation, current use and ever regular use) for any tobacco, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cigars 1 year later at wave 4.5 (2017-2018). Multivariable logistic regressions were used to examine the associations between receiving price promotions and use progression by product type, controlling for covariates. RESULTS At wave 4.5, 9.4% of youth initiated any tobacco (1.8%, 7.8% and 0.9% for cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cigars), and 5.4% received any price promotions (3.8%, 3.1% and 0.9% for cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cigars). Receiving any tobacco price promotions was associated with any tobacco initiation (adjusted OR (AOR)=1.77; 95% CI 1.30 to 2.41), current use (AOR=1.54; 95% CI 1.06 to 2.23) and ever regular use (AOR=1.76; 95% CI 1.04 to 3.10). Receiving e-cigarette price promotions was associated with e-cigarette initiation (AOR=1.78; 95% CI 1.18 to 2.26), current use (AOR=1.88; 95% CI 1.17 to 3.02) and ever regular use (AOR=2.10; 95% CI 1.02 to 4.40). The associations specific to cigarettes and cigars were only found for product initiation. DISCUSSION Receiving price promotions for any tobacco and e-cigarettes was respectively associated with the use progression of any tobacco and e-cigarettes. Continuous monitoring of tobacco marketing activities is needed to identify youth-appealing price promotion tactics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Co-use of tobacco and cannabis is highly prevalent among young US adults. Same-day co-use of tobacco and cannabis (ie, use of both substances on the same day) may increase the extent of use and negative health consequences among young adults. However, much remains unknown about same-day co-use of tobacco and cannabis, in part due to challenges in measuring this complex behavior. Nuanced understanding of tobacco and cannabis co-use in terms of specific products and intensity (ie, quantity of tobacco and cannabis use within a day) is critical to inform prevention and intervention efforts. OBJECTIVE We used a daily-diary data collection method via smartphone to capture occurrence of tobacco and cannabis co-use within a day. We examined (1) whether the same route of administration would facilitate co-use of 2 substances on the same day and (2) whether participants would use more tobacco on a day when they use more cannabis. METHODS This smartphone-based study collected 2891 daily assessments from 147 cigarette smokers (aged 18-26 years, n=76, 51.7% female) during 30 consecutive days. Daily assessments measured type (ie, cigarette, cigarillo, or e-cigarette) and intensity (ie, number of cigarettes or cigarillos smoked or number of times vaping e-cigarettes per day) of tobacco use and type (ie, combustible, vaporized, or edible) and intensity (ie, number of times used per day) of cannabis use. We estimated multilevel models to examine day-level associations between types of cannabis use and each type of tobacco use, as well as day-level associations between intensities of using cannabis and tobacco. All models controlled for demographic covariates, day-level alcohol use, and time effects (ie, study day and weekend vs weekday). RESULTS Same-day co-use was reported in 989 of the total 2891 daily assessments (34.2%). Co-use of cigarettes and combustible cannabis (885 of the 2891 daily assessments; 30.6%) was most commonly reported. Participants had higher odds of using cigarettes (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.92, 95% CI 1.31-2.81) and cigarillos (AOR 244.29, 95% CI 35.51-1680.62) on days when they used combustible cannabis. Notably, participants had higher odds of using e-cigarettes on days when they used vaporized cannabis (AOR 23.21, 95% CI 8.66-62.24). Participants reported a greater intensity of using cigarettes (AOR 1.35, 95% CI 1.23-1.48), cigarillos (AOR 2.04, 95% CI 1.70-2.46), and e-cigarettes (AOR 1.48, 95% CI 1.16-1.88) on days when they used more cannabis. CONCLUSIONS Types and intensities of tobacco and cannabis use within a day among young adult smokers were positively correlated, including co-use of vaporized products. Prevention and intervention efforts should address co-use and pay attention to all forms of use and timeframes of co-use (eg, within a day or at the same time), including co-use of e-cigarettes and vaporized cannabis, to reduce negative health outcomes.

Abstract
Cigar consumption has increased in the U.S. over the past decade, yet gaps remain in research on cigar promotion in print magazines. This study examines ad placement, volume, ad characteristics, and associated expenditures for cigars from 2018-2021, and readership data for magazines containing cigar ads. We merged content analysis data with Kantar Media data on magazine placement and expenditures and used magazine readership data from MRI-Simmons. The only brand in print magazines was Black & Mild (B & M), a top cigar brand in the U.S. There were 30 unique B & M magazine ads and 284 occurrences (i.e., appearances in magazines), translating to $46,504,578 in expenditures. All ads featured the word "enjoy/enjoyment" and a warning label. Filtered cigars were the most featured cigar type (75%) and sweets was the most featured flavor (78%). Nearly half of the publications in which B & M were advertised in have substantial Black/African American readership and were featured in publications with disproportionate young adult and Hispanic/Latino readership. This study identified tactics used in print advertising for a top cigar brand. Future research should examine how these tactics impact consumer perceptions. Findings of cigar ads reaching vulnerable populations may inform the FDA's efforts to reduce health disparities through regulations and public education.

We investigated whether T21 was associated with reductions adolescents' use of tobacco cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and electronic cigarettes and whether these associations differed across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS Secondary analyses of data from 2 956 054 7th, 9th and 11th grade students who participated in the California Healthy Kids Survey from 2010-11 to 2017-2018. RESULTS Multilevel mixed effects logistic regression analyses showed that T21 was associated with reduced prevalence of lifetime smokeless tobacco and e-cigarette use and past month smokeless tobacco use in the overall student population. T21 was associated with increases in prevalence of past month e-cigarette use. Moderation analyses indicated differences by racial and ethnic groups. Notably, T21 was associated with reductions in lifetime and past 30-day use of all tobacco and nicotine products among Latinx youth. The findings were more mixed for other racial and ethnic groups. Slopes analyses indicated that T21 was associated with accelerated downward trends for 30-day cigarette and smokeless use; moderated trends for lifetime cigarette smoking such that downward slopes became less steep; and reversed downward trends for e-cigarette use. Changes in slopes varied across racial and ethnic groups. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the importance of understanding the complex associations that T21 and other tobacco control policies have with the use of different tobacco and nicotine products among racial and ethnic groups. Future research should investigate mechanisms underlying these differences to inform tobacco control efforts.

Abstract
E-cigarette marketing tactics to reach and appeal to youth are rapidly changing. This study examined to what extent youth e-cigarette marketing exposure was associated with e-cigarette use behavior change one year later, during a time when youth e-cigarette use was starting to surge in the U.S. Using nationally representative longitudinal public-use data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, we examined associations between recalled e-cigarette marketing exposure (2016-2018) at Wave (W) 4 and e-cigarette use harm perception and behavior change (ever, current, and regular use) one year later (W4.5; 2017-2018) among W4 never tobacco users (n = 9405). Recall of exposure to e-cigarette marketing through different channels was also examined in multivariable models controlling for socio-demographic factors and established e-cigarette use risk factors. Results show that the most frequently recalled channels of e-cigarette marketing exposure were retail stores (50.3%), television (22.2%), and websites/social media (20.2%). Over one year, 21.2%, 7.8%, 3.4%, and 1.2% of respondents reported reduced harm perceptions, and ever, current, and regular use of e-cigarettes, respectively, at follow-up. Recalled exposure to e-cigarette marketing was associated with reduced e-cigarette harm perception (AOR = 1.20; 95% CI = 1.05-1.37) and ever (AOR = 1.26; 95% CI = 1.01-1.56) and current use (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.02-1.92) at follow-up. E-cigarette marketing exposure through websites/social media was associated with reduced harm perceptions and all stages of e-cigarette use change, including regular use. Identifying marketing techniques and channels that change youth e-cigarette harm perceptions and influence e-cigarette use progression is essential to inform e-cigarette regulatory policies and prevention campaigns.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tobacco product packaging is an influential industry marketing tool, but research on cigar packaging characteristics is limited. This study leveraged a pack archive of the top-selling, mass-market cigar products in the US and their corresponding sales data to assess the prevalence of common pack features in the marketplace. METHODS The 50 cigar products with the highest national unit sales in 2018 were identified using Nielsen's Scantrack data. A content analysis captured common packaging features within four domains: physical, textual, graphical, and promotional elements. Descriptive statistics, weighted by each pack's 2018 unit sales, documented the market share of pack characteristics overall and by brand. RESULTS Products in the sample constituted 62% of all convenience store cigar sales in 2018. Black & Mild, the most popular brand, did not display warning labels on its single stick, cellophane-wrapped products, which constituted nearly all of its sales (96.3%). Resealable foil pouches were the most common packaging style across other brands, and were most often sold in predominantly red, green, or silver packaging. Common flavor categories included concept (eg, "Jazz", 32.4%), fruit (15.7%), and sweet (14.5%). Prepricing (eg, "2 for 99 cents") was a popular promotional strategy, appearing on 74% of all packs sold. CONCLUSIONS Cigar packaging features such as small pack sizes, innovative materials, flavor names, bright colors, and cost-saving promotions are prevalent among the top-selling products. Stronger packaging-focused policies at the federal and local levels may help reduce appeal and potentially curb cigar use. IMPLICATIONS Sales of mass-market cigars in the US have remained strong over the past decade, propelled by lax product regulations. This study demonstrated that cigar packaging features that may enhance consumer appeal, such as small pack sizes, flavor names, sensory descriptors, bright colors, and cost-saving promotions, are prevalent among the top-selling products. Stronger packaging-focused policies at the federal and local levels may help curb cigar use, reduce youth appeal, and potentially minimize existing disparities in cigar use.

Abstract
African Americans (AA) have historically been targeted by the tobacco industry and have the highest rates of current cigar use among racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. Yet, there is limited evidence on other factors influencing cigar use. Amongst a sample of 78 AA current cigar (any type) smokers, log-linear regression models examined correlates of cigar demand obtained from a validated behavioral economic purchase task. Mean intensity, or cigar demand when free, was 6.68 cigars (standard deviation [SD]: 8.17), while mean breakpoint, or the highest price a participant was willing to pay, was $4.62 (SD: 3.88). Mean maximum daily expenditure, Omax was $15.20 (SD: 25.73) and Pmax, the price at Omax was $5.25 (SD: 3.95). Participants aged 21 to 30 years compared to those aged 18 to 20 years, those with higher levels of dependence, and females compared to males, had a significantly higher intensity. Participants with cannabis use above the sample median in the last 30 days (4 + days) had significantly higher intensity and Omax than those below the median. Further, participants with a high school education or more had a significantly lower intensity, breakpoint, and Omax than those with less than high school education. Individuals with income below the federal poverty line (FPL) also had a significantly lower breakpoint and Omax than those above. Finally, tobacco harm perceptions were inversely associated with Pmax. Stricter policies on cigar products, such as higher taxes and product-specific harm messaging, may have an immediate and sustained impact on health disparities related to cigar use. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypothetical purchase tasks have been widely used to assess the reinforcing value of tobacco products. However, a task has not yet been validated for little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs), a popular tobacco product class among vulnerable populations. This study sought to validate the LCC Purchase Task (LCCPT) in a sample of experienced LCC smokers. METHODS Data were collected from 65 young adult (18-34 years) LCC and cigarette dual users (78.5% male) in Connecticut (2018-2020). Participants completed the usual-brand LCCPT for consumption in 24 h at increasing prices. We calculated four observed demand indices: intensity (consumption at $0), breakpoint (price after which consumption reaches 0), Omax (maximum daily expenditure), and Pmax (price at which daily expenditure was maximized). Two indices were estimated from demand curves: Q0 (predicted consumption as price approaches $0) and price-sensitivity (sensitivity to price increases). Spearman correlations and multivariable regressions examined the associations between demand indices, self-reported cigar use, and dependence. RESULTS Correlations were in expected directions. All indices except breakpoint and Pmax were positively correlated with use, and all indices were correlated with multiple measures of dependence. Overall, greater demand and expenditure for LCCs and lower sensitivity to price changes were correlated with greater use and dependence. In regression analyses intensity and price-sensitivity showed the strongest relationships with use and dependence. CONCLUSIONS The validity of the LCCPT was supported in a sample of experienced LCC smokers. This instrument can be incorporated into other protocols to assess the abuse liability of LCCs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to tobacco product marketing increases tobacco use among young adults, especially those from vulnerable communities (VCs). PURPOSE This study examined real-time tobacco marketing exposure among young adults from vulnerable and non-vulnerable communities using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). METHODS This study used EMA data to assess context (e.g., location and activity) of tobacco marketing exposure using four text-messaging surveys per day over 2 weeks. Young adult non-current tobacco users living in Washington, D.C. (n = 146; ages 18-24) recorded 5,285 surveys, including 20 participants (13.2%) from VCs with high proportions of lower income and racial/ethnic minorities, and high smoking rates. Unadjusted and adjusted multilevel logistic regressions were used to assess the associations between exposure to any and flavored tobacco marketing, VC residence, and real-time context. RESULTS Fifty-nine participants (40.4%) reported at least one tobacco marketing exposure and recorded 94 exposure moments. In adjusted models, odds of exposure were higher among VC residents (AOR = 2.6, 95% CI = 1.2-5.4), in the presence of anyone using tobacco versus no use (AOR = 4.0, 95% CI = 2.4-6.7), at store/retail (AOR = 17.0, 95% CI = 6.4-44.8), or outside/in transit (AOR = 4.1, 95% CI = 2.1-7.8) versus at home. VC residence (AOR = 7.2, 95% CI = 2.3-22.2) was the strongest predictor of flavored tobacco marketing exposure among all covariates examined. CONCLUSIONS Young adults are predominantly exposed to tobacco marketing in their daily lives through retail advertisements. Young adults from VCs are at increased risks of seeing any tobacco and especially flavored tobacco marketing. Policies that curtail tobacco retailer density and advertisement displays may reduce overall and differential tobacco marketing exposure.

Abstract
This study asks young adult cigarillo users to categorize their preferred flavor in order to examine user consensus and potential methodological and regulatory implications of flavor name-based categorization systems. Young adult (21-28 years) cigarillo users (n = 426) named and categorized their favorite cigarillo flavor into one of seven categories: Fruit, Sweet and Candy, Mint, Alcohol, Menthol, Tobacco, and Other. Flavor responses were coded as characterizing (ex: Grape, Wine) or concept (ex: Jazz, Diamond) flavors. Variation within and between categories was assessed, including the presence of concept flavors and the placement of flavors in multiple categories. Of the 66 unique flavor names provided, participants placed 20 (30.1%) in more than one flavor category. Most of the Tobacco (76.9%) and Other (69.2%) flavor names appeared in multiple categories. The majority of flavor names in the Tobacco (69.2%) and Other (61.5%) categories were concept flavors. Concept flavors were placed in multiple categories (45.0%) twice as often as characterizing flavors (23.9%). This study has identified dissonance among cigarillo users' flavor categorizations, particularly for concept flavored and unflavored products. Flavor names may obscure how and whether a product is flavored. Research on and regulation of flavored tobacco products should classify products by flavor additives rather than by name alone.

The Impact of Influencers on Cigar Promotions: A Content Analysis of Large Cigar and Swisher Sweets Videos on TikTok. Abstract
Little is known about the content, promotions, and individuals in cigar-related videos on TikTok. TikTok videos with large cigar and Swisher Sweets-related hashtags between July 2016 and September 2020 were analyzed. Follower count was used to identify influencers. We compared content characteristics and demographics of featured individuals between cigar types, and by influencer status. We also examined the association between content characteristics and video engagement. Compared to large cigar videos, Swisher Sweets videos were more likely to feature arts and crafts with cigar packages, cannabis use, and flavored products. In addition, Swisher Sweets videos were also more likely to feature females, Black individuals, and younger individuals. Both Swisher Sweets and large cigar influencers posted more videos of cigar purchasing behaviors than non-influencers, which was associated with more video views. None of the videos disclosed sponsorship with #ad or #sponsored. Videos containing the use of cigar packages for arts and crafts, and flavored products highlight the importance of colorful packaging and flavors in the appeal of Swisher Sweets cigars, lending support for plain packaging requirements and the prohibition of flavors in cigar products to decrease the appeal of cigars. The presence and broad reach of cigar promotions on TikTok requires stricter enforcement of anti-tobacco promotion policies.

Abstract
Flavored cigar restrictions have the potential to benefit public health. Flavor availability facilitates cigarillo use, but it is unknown if flavor impacts patterns of co-use of cigarillos and cannabis, an increasingly prevalent behavior among young adults. Data were collected (2020-2021) in a cross-sectional online survey administered to a convenience sample of young adults who smoked cigarillos from 15 areas with high cigar use prevalence. We assessed the relationship between flavored cigarillo use and motivation to quit cannabis and cigarillo use among past 30-day co-users (N = 218), as well as several covariates (e.g., cigarillo price and flavor/cannabis policy). Flavored cigarillo perceived appeal and harm were hypothesized parallel mediators. Most co-users reported usually using flavored cigarillos (79.5%), which was not significantly associated with motivation to quit cigarillos or cannabis. Perceived cigarillo harm (β = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.00, 0.33), advertising exposure (β = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.00, 0.24), and income (among racial/ethnic minorities; β = -0.13, 95% CI = -0.25, -0.02) were significant predictors of motivation to quit cigarillos. There were no significant predictors of motivation to quit cannabis. Cigarillo flavor was not associated with motivation to quit, so findings could suggest that banning flavors in cigars may have a neutral impact on co-use with cannabis among young adults.

Abstract
The popularity of cigars, growing since 1993, has not gone hand in hand with the increased interest of researchers in these products. Although the literature widely describes the harmfulness of tobacco and the content of toxic substances in tobacco products, the topic is often treated selectively as relating primarily to cigarettes and rarely extends to other products of the broadly defined tobacco industry. However, there is no reason to marginalize the harmful effects of other nicotine products, (which include tobacco products such as cigars). The study analyzed the available literature on the content of selected heavy metals in cigar tobacco. Among the heavy metals, the following contents of elements in tobacco were recorded in cigars: Fe (420-2200 µg/g), Mn (100-370 µg/g), Zn (14-180 µg/g), Cu (15-140 µg/g), Pb (not detected-32 µg/g), Cd (nd-19 µg/g), Ni (nd-13 µg/g), Cr (nd-10 µg/g), Co (0.65-1.0 µg/g), As (nd-0.66 µg/g), Hg (18-25 ng/g). Importantly, the values often differ between cigars of different origins and types, indicating the need for more extensive research.

Abstract
Black young adults experience disparately high rates of cigar use and its health consequences. Little research has explored community-level influences on cigar smoking in this population, especially concerning product-specific influences and cigar smokers' perceptions. We conducted in-depth interviews with 40 Black young adult (ages 21-29) cigar smokers in the Washington, D.C. area and analyzed themes regarding physical and sociocultural community-level factors perceived to influence cigar use. Themes were further analyzed based on participants' predominant cigar products (cigarillos, large cigars, blunts). Participants reported easy access to affordable cigarillos, widespread cigarillo sales and targeted marketing, norms of cigar and blunt smoking for stress relief, socialization, and cultural participation, and ubiquitous cigar and blunt smoking cues, all of which promoted cigar use in their communities. Future research should further explore how community-level influences contribute to disproportionate cigar use among Black young adults. Our findings suggest that programs and policies addressing physical and sociocultural community-level pro-smoking influences may help mitigate cigar smoking disparities.

Abstract
Although cigars pose health risks similar to cigarettes, their packaging/marketing is not subject to commensurate regulation in the US. In a 2000 agreement with the Federal Trade Commission, seven major manufacturers agreed to use some form of cigar warning. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration passed a rule requiring larger standardized warnings, but the requirement was successfully challenged in court. Here, we examined U.S. population-level trends in noticing existing cigarillo, traditional and filtered cigar warnings. We analyzed Wave 5 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health adult data to assess prevalence of past-30 day warning noticing and associations with socio-demographic and tobacco use variables. Noticing was higher among current users of cigarillos (27%), filtered (34%) and traditional cigars (21%), than non-users (8% for each product, p < 0.0001), and among every-day vs. some-day users, established vs. experimental users, and past-30 day users vs. those without past-30 day use. Results varied by product, but generally indicated lower noticing among non-Hispanic Whites and dual cigarette users, but higher noticing among those purchasing cigars by the box/pack (vs. not purchasing for themselves). Low overall noticing but higher prevalence among frequent users underscores a need for a stronger, uniform cigar warning label policy in the US.

Abstract
Significant demographic heterogeneity was found based on usual cigar type. Males were more likely to use all types of cigars relative to non-use. Males were less likely to use cigarillos and filtered cigars relative to large cigars. Black adults had greater odds for using all types of cigars relative to non-use. Education, income, and other tobacco use also varied according to cigar type.
The tobacco products landscape is continually shifting, and there are concerns about the increased popularity of non-cigarette tobacco products, including cigars. This study examines characteristics associated with usual cigar-type use. Data are from the 2018–19 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the association between sociodemographic characteristics and cigar-type use (i.e., large cigars, cigarillos, and little filtered cigars). Analyses also examined factors relative to large cigar use and further stratified by sex. Of 137,221 adults included in the study, 1467 used large cigars most often, 513 used cigarillos most often, 446 used little filtered cigars most often, and the remaining 134,795 did not use cigars. In adjusted models, males had greater odds for using all types of cigars relative to non-use. In contrast, males were less likely to use cigarillos (AOR 0.28, 95% CI 0.20–0.41) and filtered cigars (AOR 0.20, 95% CI 0.14–0.28) relative to large cigars. Black adults had greater odds of using all types of cigars relative to non-use, and cigarillos (AOR 3.55, 95% CI 2.47–5.08) and filtered cigars (AOR 2.50, 95% CI 1.70–3.68) relative to large cigars. Education, income, and other tobacco use also varied according to cigar type. Characteristics of those who usually use large cigars differed significantly from those who usually use cigarillos, little filtered cigars, or reported no cigar use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Data from the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey indicated that cigars were the most commonly used combustible tobacco product in the past 30 days among youth. This study uses 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey data to report the prevalence estimates and characteristics of current cigar use, overall and by cigar type, among middle- and high-school students in the U.S. METHODS Weighted prevalence estimates and 95% CIs were calculated in 2020 for overall cigar use and by cigar type. RESULTS In 2020, current cigar smoking was reported by 3.5% of students (1.5% middle school and 5.0% high school). Cigarillos (44.1%) were the most reported cigar type smoked, followed by regular (33.1%) and little (22.6%) cigars; 21.8% did not know the cigar type. Most cigar smokers were in high school (81.2%) and were male (52.4%), and 42.3% were non-Hispanic White. More than half of cigar smokers reported smoking flavored cigars (58.3%), with fruit (61.5%), candy/desserts/other sweets (34.0%), and mint (30.4%) as the most frequently reported flavor categories. Approximately 1 in 5 current cigar smokers (18.4%) smoked on ≥20 days in the past 30 days, and 78.8% reported multiple tobacco product use. CONCLUSIONS Cigar smoking was highest among non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic youth. More than half of youth cigar smokers reported using flavored cigars, and most were also currently using other tobacco products. Cigarillos were the most reported cigar type used by youth, followed by regular cigars. These findings highlight the continued importance of youth tobacco use reduction strategies and can inform policy development.

Abstract
Although Black/African American populations have high cigar-smoking prevalence, little is known about cigar-smoking cessation among this group. This study explored the perceptions and experiences of cigar-smoking cessation and assistance received from healthcare providers among forty Black young-adult cigar smokers (ages 21-29). Semi-structured in-depth phone interviews were transcribed and coded. Qualitative data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. Participants mostly smoked cigarillos, large cigars, and blunts. Overall, many regular cigarillo smokers reported interest in quitting eventually, while large-cigar and blunt smokers shared less interest in quitting because they perceived low harm from smoking these products. The reasons for cigar-smoking cessation were health concerns and financial constraints. Most of the participants who attempted to quit cigars did not use any cessation aids. The reasons for relapse included nicotine withdrawal, stress, and easy access. Additionally, most participants reported their healthcare providers did not ask whether they smoked cigars, and even when they knew, little assistance for cigar-smoking cessation was provided. Informing Black cigar smokers of the harm of cigar smoking and encouraging healthcare providers to screen for and assist with cigar-smoking cessation may alleviate the health burden of cigar smoking in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Blunt use is a popular mode of marijuana consumption among adolescents in the United States, but little is known about how its prevalence has changed over time or factors associated with its use. With this study, we assessed trends and correlates of past (ever used but not in the past 30 days) and current (used in past 30 days) blunt use among adolescents in Florida. METHODS We analyzed data from 2010-2020 cross-sectional, statewide representative Florida Youth Tobacco Surveys that comprised 461 706 middle and high schoolers using Joinpoint to calculate annual percentage change (APC) in the weighted prevalence of past and current blunt use. A weighted multivariable regression model was developed by using 2019-2020 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey data to examine the factors associated with past and current blunt use. RESULTS Whereas the prevalence of past (APC = -5.32%) and current (APC = -5.28%) blunt use significantly decreased from 2010 to 2015, an increasing trend in current use prevalence (APC = 14.91%) was observed from 2015 to 2018 and has been approximately constant ever since. Similar increasing trends were observed in current blunt use among female students (APC = 14.92%), middle schoolers (19.57%), and non-Hispanic (NH) white students (APC = 11.12%) from 2016 to 2020. Several factors were consistently associated with greater odds of both past and current blunt use for both middle and high schoolers, including older age, being NH Black (versus NH white), past and current use of cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, hookah, cigars, and ever vaping marijuana. CONCLUSIONS Although blunt use among Florida youth decreased from 2010 to 2015, substantial increases were observed since 2015, suggesting that existing tobacco control programs should incorporate marijuana (and blunt) modules into existing tobacco and nicotine prevention programs.

Associations between Black and Mild Cigar Pack Size and Demographics and Tobacco Use Behaviors among US Adults. Abstract
Pack size is an important pricing strategy for the tobacco industry, but there is limited data on how users differ based on preferred pack size for cigar products. Using data from Wave 4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, this study identified differences in adult cigar user characteristics based on pack size purchasing behavior among users of a top cigar brand, Black and Mild. Weighted chi-square tests were used to examine the associations between Black and Mild pack size and sociodemographic, cigar and other substance use characteristics. Overall, our study found that users of Black and Mild cigars differ by demographic, cigar and other tobacco use characteristics based on preferred pack size, with smaller packs appealing to younger, female, less-experienced and less-established smokers, and larger packs appealing to older, male, more experienced, and more dependent cigar smokers. Dual use of cigarettes and cigars was also higher among users of smaller packs. While this study is cross-sectional, findings suggest that minimum packaging laws for cigars may impact younger adults who are purchasing smaller pack sizes and likely experimenting with new cigar products and styles.
