Abstract
Background: The emerging paradigm of whole person health shares many core principles with traditional complementary and integrative health frameworks, including Tai Chi and Qigong (TCQ). Methods: In the Fall of 2023, the Harvard Medical School Osher Center for Integrative Health hosted the inaugural international conference on The Science of Tai Chi & Qigong as Whole Person Health: Advancing the Integration of Mind-Body Practices into Contemporary Healthcare held at Harvard Medical School. A two-part white paper was written to summarize key conference topics, findings, and issues. Results and Discussion: Part I presented here summarizes the rationale for the conference and synthesizes the state of evidence for TCQ as rehabilitative and preventive tools for a range of clinical conditions, including falls and balance, cognition, mental health, sleep, cardiorespiratory health, musculoskeletal health, cancer, as well as translational evidence related to the neurophysiology, brain and immune function, and biomarkers of inflammation. The state of science of TCQ, viewed through the lens of traditional East Asian health constructs, is also discussed. Part II of this white paper outlines evidence gaps and opportunities and discusses strategies to address challenges in TCQ research, dissemination, and implementation.

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common degenerative joint disease that significantly reduces mobility and quality of life in elderly populations. Tai Chi, a low-impact mind-body exercise, has been suggested as a potential non-pharmacological intervention for managing KOA, but its biomechanical effects remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 14-week Tai Chi program on clinical symptoms, lower limb biomechanics, and muscle activation patterns in elderly patients with KOA. A single-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted, enrolling 24 participants aged 55-70 years with unilateral KOA. Participants were randomly assigned to a Tai Chi intervention group or a control group receiving health education only. Primary outcomes included joint range of motion, joint moments, and muscle activation, measured using a motion capture system and surface electromyography. Secondary outcomes, such as pain, stiffness, function (WOMAC), balance (BBS), and quality of life (SF-12), were also assessed pre- and post-intervention. The Tai Chi group demonstrated significant improvements in WOMAC pain (-1.58 ± 1.44 vs. 0.11 ± 0.78, p = 0.01), stiffness (-0.33 ± 0.78 vs. 0.56 ± 0.88, p = 0.02), and function scores (-2.58 ± 3.53 vs. 1.00 ± 2.78, p = 0.02) compared to the control group. Balance (BBS: 1.42 ± 1.88 vs. -0.89 ± 1.27, p = 0.01) and physical health (SF-12 PCS: 5.45 ± 6.76 vs. -1.05 ± 2.17, p = 0.01) were also enhanced. Biomechanically, Tai Chi reduced horizontal plane knee ROM (-3.03 ± 1.00°, p = 0.01) and maximum knee extension moments (affected side: -0.09 ± 0.04 N/kg, p = 0.04, Non-affected side: -0.11 ± 0.05 N/kg, p = 0.03). Tibialis anterior muscle activation increased significantly (5.66 ± 1.05%MVIC, p = 0.02), while other muscles showed non-significant trends. Tai Chi demonstrated significant clinical and biomechanical benefits for elderly KOA patients, suggesting its potential as a safe, accessible, and effective therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effect of exercise interventions on functional mobility among older adults with cognitive impairments such as dementia or mild cognitive impairment, followed by further investigation on the possible moderators of exercise-induced effects on this outcome. DESIGN A meta-analysis of controlled trials on exercise interventions reporting functional mobility outcomes was conducted. PubMed, Embase, EBSCO, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science were searched for relevant studies published in English-language journals through July 2024. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Clinical and community settings across 15 countries, including a total of 1104 older adults with cognitive impairment, were involved in the study. METHODS We computed pooled effect sizes based on standardized mean difference (SMD) using the random-effects models. The subgroup analyses and meta-regression were conducted for multiple moderating variables (eg, exercise, sample, and study characteristics). The study quality was evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale. RESULTS This meta-analysis finally included 22 studies. Results revealed that exercise interventions effectively improved functional mobility as compared with that of the control group (SMD, -0.42; 95% CI, -0.61 to -0.24; P < .001). Exercise intervention characteristics (ie, weekly training frequency and session duration) and sample characteristic (ie, percentage of women) moderated the exercise-induced effects on this interesting outcome. Subgroup analyses showed intervention with low frequency (1-2 times/wk) (SMD, -0.71; 95% CI, -1.01 to -0.42; P < .001) had a larger improvement in mobility, followed by medium frequency (SMD, -0.33; 95% CI, -0.56 to -0.10; P < .01). In addition, interventions with a session duration of > 60 minutes (SMD, -0.60; 95% CI, -0.84 to -0.36; P < .001) and 45 to 60 minutes (SMD, -0.60; 95% CI, -0.91 to -0.29; P < .001) had a significant improvement in mobility. Moreover, exercise training had a significant improvement in mobility for studies with a high percentage of women (SMD, -0.49; 95% CI, -0.67 to -0.31; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Exercise intervention is a promising way to improve functional mobility among older adults with cognitive impairment. Further evidence suggests that larger effects were observed in exercise intervention features of more than 45-minute session duration 1 to 3 times a week for at least 6 weeks regardless of exercise type. In addition, women benefit more from exercise interventions than men. Our study highlights that health care providers should prioritize integrating structured exercise programs into routine care for this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To validate the effectiveness of six exercise therapies in treating low back pain using Meta-analysis methods, and to propose optimal exercise duration, frequency, and cycle. METHODS Databases such as PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Data, and SinoMed were searched. The RevMan 5.4 tool was utilized to conduct subgroup analyses on eight moderating variables, including types of exercise, duration, frequency, cycle, sample size, study quality, outcome indicator, and comparisons of different intervention methods with the control group from 42 included studies. Random effects models were employed to test for overall effects, heterogeneity, and bias. RESULTS The overall effect size for six exercise therapies for low back pain was significant (SMD= -1.21, P < 0.00001). Subgroup analyses showed yoga had the largest effect (SMD= -1.97, P = 0.0001). Exercise duration ≤ 30 min (SMD= -1.31, P < 0.0001), frequencies > 4 times/week (SMD= -1.56, P < 0.00001), and cycles ≤ 4 weeks (SMD= -1.61, P < 0.00001) were most effective. Sample sizes of 30~60 cases (SMD= -1.36, P < 0.00001) and studies with moderate bias risk (SMD= -1.37, P < 0.00001) also showed large effects. The Oswestry Disability Index scores demonstrated the most significant effect size (SMD= -3.35, P < 0.00001). The effect size of the physical factors in the control group was the largest (SMD= -1.85, P < 0.00001). CONCLUSION All six exercise therapies effectively alleviated low back pain, with yoga showing the best results. The optimal exercise intervention protocol involved exercise duration not exceeding 30 min per session, frequency of more than 4 times per week, and cycle not exceeding 4 weeks. Additionally, exercise interventions exhibited the most significant improvements in Oswestry Disability Index scores for low back pain.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of Tai Chi training on functionality, dynamic balance, kinesiophobia, and quality of life in athletes with Functional Ankle Instability (FAI). Forty-three athletes with FAI were randomly assigned to either a Tai Chi group (n = 21) or a control group (n = 22). The Tai Chi group followed a tailored exercise protocol addressing ankle instability through a three-phase progression, while the control group had no intervention but continued their usual activities. Measurements, including Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), Short Form-12 (SF-12), figure-8 hop test, and perceived treatment effect were assessed before and after the intervention. The Tai Chi group showed significant improvements in CAIT score and SEBT reach distance compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Tai Chi exercises also reduced TSK, improved figure-8 hop score, and enhanced the physical component of SF-12 (p < 0.005), with no significant effect on the mental component of SF-12 (p = 0.7). The findings imply that Tai Chi may be a valuable consideration for athletic trainers and sports medicine professionals working with athletes with FAI.

Abstract
Background Despite numerous studies affirming the potential of traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) in enhancing balance in older adults, systematic integration is lacking. This study evaluated the effectiveness of five TCEs-Baduanjin, Liuzijue, Tai Chi, Wuqinxi, and Yijinjing-in improving balance among older adults using network meta-analysis. Methods This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO with the registration number CRD42023481450. Related articles indexed by Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and VIP databases before October 2023 were searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving TCEs interventions to improve balance function conducted in older adults who aged ≥60 years were included. Two researchers used Review Manager to assess the quality of the studies, and analyzed the data using Stata and R. Results In total, 46 RCTs and 3,333 older adults were included. The aforementioned TCEs had positive effects on improving balance in older adults. Tai Chi revealed significant intervention effects in performing the Single-Leg Stand with eyes Closed (SLSC), 6-Min Walk Test (6MWT), and Short Form 36-Item Physical Component Summary (SF-36PCS). Liuzijue significantly improved performance in the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), 6MWT, SF-36PCS, and Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, and Yijinjing showed noteworthy intervention effects on the BBS. Tai Chi ranked highest in the SLSC, 6MWT, and SF-36PCS in the surface under the cumulative ranking, while Liuzijue and Yijinjing ranked highest in the TUGT and BBS, respectively. Conclusion Tai Chi, Liuzijue, and Yijinjing improved the static, dynamic, and overall balance outcomes, respectively. Older adults can make a reasonable choice among these TCEs based on their needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peripheral neuropathy can affect balance and increase fall risk. Tai Chi is known to activate neuromuscular systems and may help improve balance and postural control. We conducted a scoping review of clinical studies that evaluated the impact of Tai Chi on balance and related neurobiological outcomes among individuals with peripheral neuropathy. METHODS We systematically searched three databases from inception to December 19, 2023 and identified 11 eligible clinical studies. We extracted trial information from each study and performed a qualitative study features analysis to summarize the clinical evidence and neurobiological mechanisms of Tai Chi in regulating balance among people with peripheral neuropathy. RESULTS We found that among 508 participants with clinical peripheral neuropathy, Tai Chi significantly improved single leg stance, 6-min walk, timed up-and-go tests, and gait speed when measured pre- and post-exercise. However, the differences between Tai Chi and sham exercise control that involved active calisthenics and stretching exercises were not statistically significant. Studies that used quantitative sensory testing showed that Tai Chi was associated with significant increases in plantar vibration and tactile sensitivity. The effect of Tai Chi on postural control varied depending on plantar sensory loss status, and results on muscle strength remained mixed. Other neurobiological effects involve strengthening muscle performance and proprioception and consolidating cognitive awareness of walking strategy and practical behavioral techniques. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicated that Tai Chi may enhance balance, postural control, and gait speed in patients with peripheral neuropathy, possibly through sensory restoration, although further research is needed to confirm this. Whether Tai Chi improves muscle strength or other gait health parameters is inconclusive. Rigorous randomized clinical trials should be conducted to determine the effect of Tai Chi on balance in this population by measuring functional balance and quantitative sensory outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most popular traditional Chinese exercise (TCE) techniques include Tai Chi, Yijinjing, Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, and Qigong. Exercise is advised as a primary treatment for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) according to clinical standards. According to several studies, TCE may be an effective way to help people with KOA manage their pain, stiffness, and physical function. Which TCE therapy is the most effective and whose particular usefulness is still debatable. The network meta-analysis (NMA) method is used in this study to evaluate and compare the effects of various TCE therapies on KOA patients. METHODS We will search PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, the Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP), and the China Biology Medical Literature Database (CBM) for randomized controlled trials reporting TCE therapy for KOA patients published before October 25, 2023. The Stata 16.0 program will compare the effectiveness of various TCE therapies on KOA patients using conventional pairwise and NMA. RESULTS The final 29 studies included 15 articles on Tai Chi, 7 articles on Baduanjin, 4 articles on Wuqinxi, and 3 articles on Yijinjing. Tai Chi was first for the effect sizes of VAS scores, WOMAC pain scores, and WOMAC available scores, while Baduanjin was ranked top for WOMAC stiffness scores. Research should continue to be conducted on the effect of Qigong on KOA intervention. CONCLUSIONS This NMA will help determine the best TCE treatment for KOA and offer evidence-based bias for clinical decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Joint position sense (JPS) is crucial for maintaining posture, protecting joints, and carrying out daily activities such as walking. Studies show that exercises to strengthen muscles and improve proprioception can positively impact JPS during passive and less complex activities. Evidence suggests that motor training can effectively enhance sensory function, including JPS, due to the extensive connections between the motor cortex and somatosensory areas. Gait retraining using real-time feedback has improved outcomes among patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The effect of gait retraining on JPS has not been investigated. This study assessed the effects of gait retraining to reduce knee extension in joint position sense in individuals with knee hyperextension walking patterns. METHODS Ten women with asymptomatic knee hyperextension (KH) >5° during overground walking participated in this study. Sagittal-plane kinematics were assessed using a three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis system. The JPS was assessed using the Knee Position Active Reproduction Test. The knee with the highest hyperextension was the focus of the gait retraining intervention, which consisted of six 1-h sessions using verbal instructions and visual kinematic feedback. Comparisons of peak knee extension during walking and knee JPS overall error (RMSE) were made using a paired t-test. RESULTS Gait retraining intervention significantly reduced knee extension angle during walking (83.8 % change; p < 0.001; Cohen's d = -1.6) and improved knee JPS (62 % change; p = 0.023; Cohen's d = 0.8) post-training. In addition, the improvements in joint kinematics (36.7 % change; p = 0.005; Cohen's d = -1.2) and JPS (52.6 % change; p = 0.015; Cohen's d = 0.9) were observed in the untrained knee. SIGNIFICANCE Gait retraining can improve joint position sense. This study addresses a gap in our understanding of how gait retraining can influence JPS. Our results corroborate that gait retraining is an evolving and promising strategy for improving gait outcomes, particularly in individuals with KH walking patterns.

Abstract
CONTEXT Sport-related dystonia is a rare form of activity-specific dystonia that can severely impair an athlete's ability to perform. Due to a lack of data on the condition, it is difficult to diagnose and often overlooked, and no gold standard treatment has yet been defined. CASE PRESENTATION We present a rare and challenging case of sport-related dystonia that affected a 24-year-old male professional soccer player. The patient presented with severe rigidity and dystonia of the right lower-extremity, particularly the ankle and foot. The symptoms set on >1 year prior to the presentation to our outpatient clinic. He began to complain of stiffness and difficulty moving his lower limbs, especially his right leg, initially when playing soccer, but then also when walking normally. On presentation, he was unable to run and walked with difficulty, supporting his body weight only on the outside of his right foot. He also reported a motor trick and reverse motor trick involving the oral musculature in order to move his lower limb more freely. MANAGEMENT AND OUTCOMES An integrated rehabilitation approach based on postural rehabilitation, neuromuscular rehabilitation, and dental intervention was used to successfully treat this condition. The approach included: (1) postural rehabilitation with the Mézières-Bertelè method to reduce muscular stiffness, (2) neuromuscular re-education with Tai Chi exercises and electromyography-guided biofeedback, and (3) dental intervention and swallowing rehabilitation to limit impaired oral habits (due to the relationship between his impaired lower limb movements and motor tricks of the oral musculature). After 7 months of integrated rehabilitation, the patient returned to professional soccer. CONCLUSIONS This case report highlights the potential efficacy of an integrative rehabilitation approach for sports dystonia, particularly in cases where traditional treatments may not be effective. Such an approach could be considered a valuable option in the management of this rare, but debilitating, condition in athletes. Further research is needed to assess the effectiveness of this approach in larger populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Theta burst stimulation (TBS) is more energy- and time-efficient than is standard repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, further studies are needed to analyze TBS therapy for its efficacy and safety compared with standard rTMS in treating depression. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare TBS therapy with standard rTMS treatment regarding their safety and therapeutic effect on individuals with depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six data bases (Wanfang, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO) were searched from inception till December 20, 2022. Two independent reviewers selected potentially relevant studies on the basis of the inclusion criteria, extracted data, and evaluated the methodologic quality of the eligible trials using the modified ten-item Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale per Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Finally, ten comparable pairs of nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included for meta-analysis. Summary odds ratios (ORs) of the rates of response, remission, and adverse events were simultaneously calculated using quality-effects (QE) and random-effects (RE) models. Changes in depression scores associated with antidepressant effects were expressed using standardized mean differences simultaneously. This study was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42022376790). RESULTS Nine of the 602 RCTs, covering 1124 patients (616 who had TBS protocols applied vs 508 treated using standard rTMS), were included. Differences in response rates between the above two treatment modalities were not significant (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.88-1.16, p = 0.44, I2 = 0%, RE model; OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.87-1.32, p = 0.44, I2 = 0%, QE model). Differences in adverse event rates between TBS and standard rTMS groups were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS TBS has similar efficacy and safety to standard rTMS for treating depression. Considering the short duration of daily stimulation sessions, this meta-analysis supports the continued development of TBS for treating depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical symptoms play an important role in late-life depression and may contribute to residual symptomatology after antidepressant treatment. In this exploratory study, we examined the role of specific bodily dimensions including movement, respiratory functions, fear of falling, cognition, and physical weakness in older people with depression. METHODS Clinically stable older patients with major depression within a Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison program for Primary Care underwent comprehensive assessment of depressive symptoms, instrumental movement analysis, dyspnea, weakness, activity limitations, cognitive function, and fear of falling. Network analysis was performed to explore the unique adjusted associations between clinical dimensions. RESULTS Sadness was associated with worse turning and walking ability and movement transitions from walking to sitting, as well as with worse general cognitive abilities. Sadness was also connected with dyspnea, while neurovegetative depressive burden was connected with activity limitations. DISCUSSION Limitations of motor and cognitive function, dyspnea, and weakness may contribute to the persistence of residual symptoms of late-life depression.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of a 16-week Tai Chi practice on strength, tactile sensation, kinesthesia, and static postural control among older adults of different age groups. Methods This is a quasi-experimental study. Thirteen participants aged 60-69 years (60-69yr), 11 aged 70-79 years (70-79yr), and 13 aged 80-89 years (80-89yr) completed 16 weeks of 24-form Tai Chi practice. Their ankle and hip peak torque, tactile sensation, ankle and knee kinesthesia, and the root mean square of the center of pressure (Cop-RMS) were measured before (week 0) and after (week 17) practice. Results 80-89yr showed less ankle plantar/dorsiflexion and hip abduction peak torques (p = 0.003, p < 0.001, p = 0.001), and a greater ankle plantar/dorsiflexion kinesthesia (p < 0.001, p = 0.002) than 60-69yr and 70-79yr. Greater ankle plantar/dorsiflexion and hip abduction torques (p = 0.011, p < 0.001, p = 0.045), improved arch and heel tactile sensation (p = 0.040, p = 0.009), and lower knee flexion/extension kinesthesia (p < 0.001, p = 0.044) were observed at week 17. The significant group*practice interaction for the fifth metatarsal head tactile sensation (p = 0.027), ankle plantar/dorsiflexion kinesthesia (p < 0.001, p = 0.004), and the CoP-RMS in the mediolateral direction (p = 0.047) only in 80-89yr revealed greater improvement at week 17. Conclusion Tai Chi practice increased strength, tactile sensation, kinesthesia, and static postural control among older adults. Tai Chi practice improved tactile, kinesthesia sensations, and static postural control among older adults over 80, who presented with worse strength and kinesthesia than their younger counterparts. Tai Chi practice offers a safe exercise option for those aged over 80 to encourage improvements in sensorimotor control.

Abstract
Working memory (WM) deficits are a significant component of neurocognitive impairment in individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ). Two previous meta-analyses, conducted on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), examined the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in addressing WM deficits in individuals diagnosed with SCZ. However, the conclusions drawn from these analyses were inconsistent. Additionally, the commonly used random effects (RE) models might underestimate statistical errors, attributing a significant portion of perceived heterogeneity between studies to variations in study quality. Therefore, this review utilized both RE and quality effects (QE) models to assess relevant RCTs comparing TMS with sham intervention in terms of clinical outcomes. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and Scopus databases, resulting in the inclusion of 13 studies for data synthesis. Overall, regardless of whether the RE or QE model was used, eligible RCTs suggested that the TMS and sham groups exhibited comparable therapeutic effects after treatment. The current state of research regarding the use of rTMS as a treatment for WM deficits in patients with SCZ remains in its preliminary phase. Furthermore, concerning the mechanism of action, the activation of brain regions focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and alterations in gamma oscillations may hold significant relevance in the therapeutic application of rTMS for addressing WM impairments. Finally, we believe that the application of closed-loop neuromodulation may contribute to the optimization of rTMS for WM impairment in patients with SCZ.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of five traditional Chinese fitness exercises (Baduanjin, Taijiquan, Wuqinxi, Yijinjing, and Liuzijue), as well as their efficacy when combined with drug therapy, in the treatment of decreased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Methods This study strictly followed the evaluation guidelines of PRISMA and followed the "PICOS" principle outlined in the Cochrane Handbook. We performed a systematic search on Web of Science, Springer Link, Scopus, EMBASE, EBSCO, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, CBMdisc, and the VIP Database, and we targeted RCTs studying the effect of TCE on BMD in postmenopausal women published prior to September 2023. The quality of the literature and the risk of bias of the included studies were assessed according to ROB2 and GRADE criteria, and data analysis was performed using Stata 14. Results A total of 33 RCTs (3658 post-menopausal women) were included. Network meta-analysis showed that Taiji (SMD=0.72, 95% CI: 0.22, 1.21, P<0.01) and Yijinjing (SMD=0.51, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.99, P<0.05) were significantly superior to conventional rehabilitation in lumbar BMD. In terms of improvement of femoral neck BMD, Baduanjin (SMD=1.63, 95% CI: -3.58, 6.85, P<0.001) and Taiji (SMD=0.46, 95% CI: 0.14, 0.79, P<0.05) had statistically different outcomes to conventional rehabilitation. Regarding Ward's triangle BMD, Taiji (SMD= 0.32, 95% CI: 0.14, 0.50, P< 0.05) had statistically different outcomes to conventional rehabilitation. The results of the SUCRA probability ranking showed that Baduanjin + drug interventions achieved the most significant improvement in lumbar BMD (SUCRA=83.6%) and femoral neck BMD (SUCRA=90.2%). Taiji + drug interventions most effectively improved Ward's triangle BMD (SUCRA=86.0%). In terms of traditional Chinese fitness exercises alone, Taiji was the most effective in improving lumbar BMD (SUCRA=64.4%) and Ward's triangle BMD (SUCRA=46.8%), and Baduanjin was the most effective in treating femoral neck BMD (SUCRA=89.9%). Conclusion Traditional Chinese fitness exercises can significantly improve the BMD levels of postmenopausal women. Taiji, Yijinjing, and Baduanjin combined with medication showed better intervention effects overall. However, due to the limitations of the number of studies and sample sizes of individual interventions, definitive conclusions need to be verified by more high-quality studies.

Abstract
Subacromial Impingement Syndrome (SAIS) is a common shoulder condition characterized by pain and functional impairment. Proprioception, the sense of joint position and movement, is crucial in maintaining joint stability and coordinating movements. The relationship between shoulder proprioception, pain intensity, and functional disability in individuals with SAIS remains unclear, with conflicting findings in the literature. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate shoulder proprioception, examine its correlation with pain intensity and functional disability, and contribute to our understanding of the clinical implications of proprioceptive deficits in individuals with SAIS. Forty-two individuals were diagnosed with SAIS, and an equal number of asymptomatic controls were recruited. Shoulder proprioception was assessed using a digital inclinometer, measuring joint position sense at various angles of flexion and rotation. Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and functional disability was assessed using the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI). Results: Individuals with SAIS exhibited significantly higher joint position error (JPE) values compared to asymptomatic controls in all measured angles of flexion and rotation (p < 0.001). Strong positive correlations were observed between JPE and pain intensity (r = 0.61 to 0.71, p < 0.01) and disability (r = 0.56 to 0.68, p < 0.01). These findings suggest impaired shoulder proprioception is associated with higher pain intensity and functional disability in SAIS. This study provides evidence of impaired shoulder proprioception in individuals with SAIS and its correlation with pain intensity and functional disability. The results highlight the clinical relevance of proprioceptive deficits in SAIS and emphasize the importance of incorporating proprioceptive assessment and targeted rehabilitation interventions into managing this condition. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies with larger and more diverse samples to further understand the underlying mechanisms and evaluate the effectiveness of proprioceptive interventions in improving outcomes for individuals with SAIS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults experience age-related declines in physical and cognitive functions due to interactions between aging and chronic diseases. Tai Chi and Qigong (TCQ) might be beneficial in improving the physical function and delaying the cognitive decline of this population. The potential underlying mechanism was explored to determine the effects of TCQ on cognitive function via direct or indirect pathways. PURPOSE The objective of this systematic review was to determine the effects of TCQ on cognitive and physical functions in older adults using meta-analysis, and to determine the impact of TCQ on cognitive function while controlling for physical function using a meta-regression approach. METHODS A systematic search of 13 electronic databases (in English, Korean, and Chinese languages) identified 10,292 potentially eligible studies published between inception and May 2022. The bias in individual studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (version 2.0) tool. The heterogeneity of the studies was evaluated using a 95% prediction interval, and the meta-analysis and meta-regression were implemented using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 3) software. RESULTS Our search identified 17 randomized studies (n = 2,365, mean age = 70.3 years). The results of the meta-analysis that used a random-effects model indicated that TCQ had significant effects on both cognitive (Hedges' g = 0.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.17 to 0.42) and physical (Hedges' g = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.19 to 0.44) functions. We used meta-regression to explore the effect size of TCQ in association with physical function level. The regression model was significant (Q = 25.01, p = .070), and 55% of the heterogeneity was explained by physical function as a moderator variable. The effects of TCQ on cognitive function remained significant in this model when controlling for the effect of physical function (β = 0.46, p = .011). CONCLUSION This meta-regression of 17 randomized studies strongly suggests that TCQ has beneficial effects on physical and cognitive functions in older adults. The effect of TCQ on cognitive function remained significant after taking into account the significant effects of physical function as a moderator. The findings imply the potential health benefits of TCQ by promoting cognitive function in older adults directly and indirectly through enhancing physical function. Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the effects of Ving Tsun (VT) sticking-hand training on knee joint proprioception and leg muscular performance among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults. METHODS Thirty-three middle-aged and older adults were randomly assigned to either the VT or control group. The VT group received sticking-hand training twice/week for 3 months. Data were collected before and after the intervention period. The primary outcome was knee joint repositioning error, which was measured using knee joint active repositioning tests. The secondary outcomes included the maximum muscle strength and time to maximum muscle strength of the major leg muscles. RESULTS No significant group, time, or group-by-time interaction effects were found for the knee joint repositioning error (p > 0.05). The maximum muscle strength of the knee flexors increased over time in the VT group only (p = 0.038). In addition, the time to maximum muscle strength in the hip extensors and flexors increased over time in both groups (p < 0.05). For the knee extensors and flexors, the time to maximum muscle strength increased in the control (p = 0.027) and VT (p = 0.019) groups, respectively, over time. CONCLUSIONS VT sticking-hand training could improve the maximum muscle strength of the knee flexors but could not attenuate the age-related deterioration in leg muscle contraction speed nor improve knee joint proprioception among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults. Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevention of falls among older adults is one of the most important public health issues in today's aging society. There are many factors significantly affecting the risk of falls. AIMS This study aimed to investigate the factors on fall risk in older adults. METHODS A total of 335 elderly outpatients aged 65 and over were included in this cross-sectional study. Comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed on the participants. Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment Tool (TBGA) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were used to assess fall risk and cognitive functions, respectively. RESULTS The mean age of 335 participants was 72.1 ± 6.0 years and 55.2% was female. Of the participants, 40.6% had a moderate-high fall risk according to TBGA and 31.6% had a history of falls within the last year. Although there was no significant difference in MMSE results between the medium-high fall risk group and the low fall risk group, higher MMSE attention and calculation domain score was found to be an independent variable for decreased fall risk and sarcopenia for increased fall risk (p = 0.039, OR = 0.70 and p = 0.037, OR = 3.43, respectively). CONCLUSION The role of sarcopenia in fall risk is well established. In this study, we also showed that attention and calculation play important roles in fall risk. Elderly individuals with low scores in attention and calculation domains need a more detailed assessment in terms of fall risk, even if cognitive functions are considered normal according to the MMSE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Falls are an important public health issue that poses a threat to the health of senior people and reduces their ability to maintain independence, which in turn reduces poor quality of life. Several studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between physical function and fall, it remains unclear whether there is an association between gait speed and fall-related injuries among the aging population, which represent the largest proportion of older adults in China. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the association between gait speed and fall-related injuries among older Chinese adults. METHODS Data from the Global Ageing and Adult Health Survey (2007-2010) were analyzed. A stratified multi-stage cluster sampling design was used to collect the survey data. A total of 7558 Chinese adults aged 60 or older were included in this study. A 4-m walking test was used to assess gait speed. Fall-related injuries were self-reported by study participants. The binary logistic regression model was employed to examine the association between gait speed and fall-related injuries while controlling for age, sex, education years, smoking, alcohol consumption, and chronic diseases. RESULTS The mean age of the sample of older Chinese adults was 69.70 ± 7.10 years (females accounted for 52.6%). The results showed that a normal gait speed was negatively correlated with fall-related injury (odds ratio = 1.20) when adjusting for all covariates. Moreover, a binary regression analysis showed that a normal gait speed was only negatively correlated with fall-related injury in male participants (odds ratio = 1.32). There were no significant results in rapid gait speed and fall-related injuries. CONCLUSION The results suggest that a slow gait speed may predict a higher risk of fall-related injuries among older Chinese adults, especially older male adults. Further studies are needed to verify our findings.

Abstract
Higher aerobic fitness during late midlife is associated with higher white matter (WM) microstructure. Compared with individuals engaged in irregular exercise, those who engage in regular aerobic exercise show higher fractional anisotropy (FA), a diffusion tenor imaging (DTI) measure that provides an index of WM microstructural integrity. However, whether other types of exercise, such as Tai Chi, can also facilitate WM changes in adults during late midlife remains unknown. The present study compares two types of exercise, Tai Chi and walking, with a sedentary control group, in order to examine the effects of exercise on WM microstructure and determine the regional specificity of WM differences. Thirty-six healthy adults between the ages of 55 and 65 years participated in the study. Based on the participants' exercise habits, they were allocated into three groups: Tai Chi, walking, or sedentary control. All participants were required to complete physical fitness measurements and completed magnetic reasoning imaging (MRI) scans. Our results revealed that the Tai Chi group exhibited a higher FA value in the left cerebral peduncle, compared to the sedentary control group. We also observed that both the Tai Chi and walking groups exhibited higher FA values in the right uncinate fasciculus and the left external capsule, in comparison to the sedentary control group. Increased FA values in these regions was positively correlated with higher levels of physical fitness measurements (i.e., peak oxygen uptake [VO2peak], muscular endurance/number of push-up, agility, power). These findings collectively suggest that regular exercise is associated with improved WM microstructural integrity, regardless of the exercise type, which could guide the development and application of future prevention and intervention strategies designed to address age-related cognitive impairments during late midlife.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With aging, the cognitive function of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) declined, postural control weakened, and fall risk increased. As a mind-body exercise, regular Tai Chi practice could improve postural control and effectively prevent falls; however, underlying brain mechanisms remained unclear, which were shed light on by analyzing the effect of Tai Chi on the PFC in older adults by means of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS 36 healthy older adults without Tai Chi experience were divided randomly into Tai Chi group and Control group. The experiment was conducted four times per week for 16 weeks; 27 participants remained and completed the experiment. Negotiating obstacle task (NOT) and negotiating obstacle with cognitive task (NOCT) were performed pre- and post-intervention, and Brodmann area 10 (BA10) was detected using fNIRS for hemodynamic response. A three-dimensional motion capture system measured walking speed. RESULTS After intervention in the Tai Chi group under NOCT, the HbO2 concentration change value (ΔHbO2) in BA10 was significantly greater (right BA10: p = 0.002, left BA10: p = 0.001), walking speed was significantly faster (p = 0.040), and dual-task cost was significantly lower than pre-intervention (p = 0.047). ΔHbO2 in BA10 under NOCT was negatively correlated with dual-task cost (right BA10: r = -0.443, p = 0.021, left BA10: r = -0.448, p = 0.019). There were strong negative correlations between ΔHbO2 and ΔHbR under NOCT either pre-intervention (left PFC r = -0.841, p < 0.001; right PFC r = -0.795, p < 0.001) or post-intervention (left PFC r = -0.842, p < 0.001; right PFC r = -0.744, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Tai Chi practice might increase the cognitive resources in older adults through the PFC bilateral activation to prioritize gait performance during negotiating obstacles under a dual-task condition.

Abstract
Background. Tai Chi is a form of exercise that is accessible to people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, making it a potentially valuable activity for health promotion of older adults. Purpose. The objective of this scoping review was to summarize the current knowledge about the effectiveness of Tai Chi for older adults across a range of general health outcomes from published, peer reviewed, unique meta-analyses. Methods. Meta-analyses were retrieved from Medline, Embase, AMED, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, PsychINFO, Web of Science, PubMed Health, and the Cochrane Library from database inception to late August 2019. Multistage deduplication and screening processes identified eligible full-length meta-analyses. Two people independently appraised 27 meta-analyses based on the GRADE system and organized results into 3 appendices subsequently collated into heterogeneous, statistically significant, and statistically insignificant tables. Results. "High" and "moderate" quality evidence extracted from these meta-analyses demonstrated that practicing Tai Chi can significantly improve balance, cardiorespiratory fitness, cognition, mobility, proprioception, sleep, and strength; reduce the incidence of falls and nonfatal stroke; and decrease stroke risk factors. Conclusions. Health care providers can now recommend Tai Chi with high level of certainty for health promotion of older adults across a range of general health outcomes for improvement of overall well-being.

The effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine-based exercise on physical performance, balance and muscle strength among older adults: a systematic review with meta-analysis. Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) based exercises have been widely used in the prevention and treatment of balance, cardiopulmonary, and other related diseases in older adults. However, there seems to be no consensus on the improvement and comparison of physical performance, balance, and muscle strength in the elderly population. OBJECTIVES To systematically examine the impact of different TCM-based exercises on physical performance, balance, and muscle strength outcomes in the elderly. METHODS We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane Center, CNKI and Wan Fang between their date of inception and March 2021. This meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3 software. Only randomized controlled trials (RCT) or controlled clinical trials (CCT) were considered in TCM-based exercises (Tai Chi, Ba Duan Jin, Qigong). The overall mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD), and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. MAIN RESULTS A total of 27 studies with 2580 older adults met the inclusion criteria. The pooled analysis indicated that Tai Chi could be more effective in Times up and go (TUG) (MD = - 2.62, 95% CI - 4.00 to - 1.24, P = 0.0002), 5 times sit-stand (MD = - 1.89; 95%CI - 3.38 to - 0.40; P = 0.01), and handgrip strength outcomes (SMD = 0.69; 95%CI 0.52-0.86; P < 0.0001) compared to Ba Duan Jin and Qigong. The older adults performing Qigong could have a better benefit in Single-bed balance (SLB) with eyes closed compared to Tai Chi and Ba Duan Jin (MD = 3.42; 95%CI 1.55 to 5.29; P = 0.0003). Tai Chi also had benefits in terms of balance outcomes compared to those in the control group: Berg Balance scale (BBS) (MD = 1.41; 95% CI 0.03-2.85; P = 0.05), Functional reach test (FRT) (MD = 1.57; 95%CI 1.22-1.93; P < 0.0001). The Tai Chi study meta-analysis demonstrated significant effects on lower limb strength: knee extension (SMD = 0.56; 95%CI 0.26-0.86; P = 0.0003), ankle dorsiflexion (SMD = 0.67; 95%CI 0.02-1.31; P = 0.04) compared to the controls. CONCLUSION This systematic review reveals that TCM-based exercises can effectively improve physical performance outcomes, balance outcomes, and muscle strength in the elderly population. While there is limited evidence on the efficacy of other TCM-based lifestyle interventions, more high-quality clinical trials on this topic are warranted.

Abstract
Objectives This study aims to systematically analyze the effects of mind–body exercises on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, and anxiety in patients with PTSD. Furthermore, it intends to provide scientific evidence-based exercise prescriptions. Methods Chinese (i.e., China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, and Wanfang) and English (i.e., Web of Science, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE) databases were used as data sources to search for studies on the effects of mind–body exercises on symptoms associated with patients with PTSD from January 1980 to November 2020. After a rigorous screening, 16 eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the meta-analysis. Results Mind–body exercises exerted a significant effect on PTSD symptoms [standard mean difference (SMD) = −0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) −0.64 to −0.19, p < 0.001], depression (SMD = −0.35, 95% CI: −0.55 to −0.15, p < 0.001), and anxiety (SMD = −0.31, 95% CI: −0.74 to −0.12, p < 0.001) among patients with PTSD. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that 60–150 min per session for 8–16 weeks of mindfulness was more effective in improving symptoms in patients with PTSD under 45 years of age compared with other subgroups. For depression, 150–180 min of yoga exercises once per week was effective. For anxiety, the frequency, timing, duration, and type of mind–body exercises that are most effective in relieving anxiety in patients with PTSD cannot be determined at this time due to the limited number of eligible RCTs. Conclusions Mind–body exercises were found to be significantly effective in improving PTSD symptoms, depression, and anxiety in patients with PTSD. Therefore, they can be used as an adjunct to intervention for symptoms of patients with PTSD. However, this conclusion requires further confirmation through additional scientific and objective RCTs. Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this quality improvement project was to examine the feasibility of rapidly converting a Tai Chi program for older Veterans from face-to-face to virtual classes. METHODS Eighteen Veterans attending our face-to-face Tai Chi course were invited to transition to virtual classes. Feasibility was defined as the ability of program staff and participants to successfully connect and complete the initial and subsequent classes by VA Video Connect (VVC) with little to no technical difficulties, participant ability to participate in the course without safety concerns, and favorable feedback from participants and program staff. RESULTS Nine of 18 Veterans agreed to transition to the virtual program and attended a median (interquartile range) of 11 (4-15) classes; they were younger (62.7 + 11.5 vs. 70.5 + 7.0 years, p < .05) and more likely to have the knowledge and equipment needed to participate (78% vs. 0%, p < .01) than nonparticipants. Tai Chi instructors and participating Veterans reported being able to connect to and complete the classes virtually with only minimal technical problems. No adverse events were reported. Feedback from the instructors and Veterans was positive and included comments on ease of use and enjoyability. CONCLUSION Results suggest that virtual Tai Chi classes via VVC are feasible for some older Veterans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Balance disorders are the primary cause of falls, a significant health concern for the elderly. Tai Chi (TC) improves the balance and strength of the lower limb muscles that focus on centering the mind, bodywork, and breathing exercises.
AIM: A systematic review was conducted to search for evidence of the effects of Thai Chi in balancing and strengthening of lower extremities among the elderly in the community.
METHODS: According to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines, a systematic review was conducted. Databases included Science Direct, ProQuest, and PubMed, from 2015 to 2020, with research articles being original studies. The quality of research articles was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Systematically analyses were used for results syntheses.
RESULTS: Six articles were included in this review. TC exercises effectively improve the balance and muscle strength of the lower limbs among the elderly in the community. TC has a beneficial effect on evaluation in the short (8 weeks) and long (12 weeks) term to prevent falls among the elderly in the community.
CONCLUSION: TC exercises are beneficial for improving balance and muscle strength of the lower limb among the elderly in the community with Selected TC, Traditional TC, and Modified Chen-style TC.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that Taijiquan and Qigong exercise can effectively reduce depression and anxiety in healthy and clinical populations. At present, only a few reviews have elaborated on the premise of different types of interventions, and there is still a lack of studies that systematically summarize the clinical evidence of patients with substance use disorders. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the impact of the Taijiquan and Qigong exercise on the mood of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD); Articles were searched in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and CNKI from their inception to the May 24, 2021. All randomized controlled trials (RCT) using Taijiquan and Qigong intervention were included. With the Review Manager software to determine the effect (standardized mean difference, SMD), subgroup analysis was conducted to intervention type, exercise time, and exercise duration. Nine studies totaling 823 participants were included in the study. Overall results indicated that Taijiquan and Qigong exercise had significant benefits in reducing depression (SMD = −0.35, 95% CI: −0.53 to −0.18, Z = 4.00, p < 0.01) and anxiety (SMD = −0.31, 95% CI: −0.50 to −0.11, Z = 3.06, p < 0.01) symptoms in SUD. When depression and anxiety were examined separately, subgroup analysis demonstrated that Taijiquan intervention (SMD = −0.45, 95% CI: −0.71 to −0.19, Z = 3.39, p < 0.01) and Qigong intervention (SMD = −0.28, 95% CI −0.51 to −0.04, Z = 2.33, p = 0.02),30–60 min exercise time (SMD = −0.41, 95% CI: −0.61 to −0.20, Z = 3.82, p < 0.01) and duration of 9–12 weeks (SMD = −0.57, 95% CI: −1.10 to −0.04, Z = 2.10, p = 0.04) more than 12 weeks (SMD = −0.28, 95% CI: −0.50 to −0.07, Z = 2.59, p = 0.01) could effectively alleviate the symptoms of depression. Meanwhile, Qigong intervention (SMD = −0.31, 95% CI: −0.52 to −0.10, Z = 2.85, p < 0.01), 30–60 min exercise time (SMD = −0.29, 95% CI: −0.53 to −0.04, Z = 2.28, p = 0.02), more than 60 min exercise time (SMD = −0.54, 95% CI: −1.06 to −0.02, Z = 2.05, p = 0.04), and duration of less than 9 weeks (SMD = −0.35, 95% CI: −0.68 to −0.02, Z = 2.07, p = 0.04) had positive effects on alleviating anxiety symptoms with SUD. Taijiquan and Qigong exercise could reduce levels of anxiety and depression in those with SUD. Considering the small number of included studies, more reliable RCTs are needed on this topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis aims at assessing the clinical evidence regarding the efficacy of Tai Chi interventions in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS Literature retrieval will use the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, China Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Wanfang Database, and Ongoing Clinical Trials Database. Our search strategy was based on a string of text words, Medical Subject Headings, and subject headings indicative of Tai Chi. The search strings included: tai chi chuan, taiji, and taiji quan interventions in myocardial infarction; MI infarcts; myocardial infarcts; myocardial; coronary artery disease; coronary arteriosclerosis; acute coronary syndromes; and coronary syndromes. Quality assessment of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. Statistical analyses were performed using RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS The findings of this study will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals for publication. CONCLUSION This study will provide reliable evidence regarding the efficacy of Tai Chi in patients with MI and provide up-to-date evidence for its application.

Abstract
While studies on the health benefits of Tai Chi have sprung up over the past four decades, few have engaged in collecting global data, estimating the developing trends, and conducting reviews from the perspective of visualization and bibliometric analysis. This study aimed to provide a summary of the global scientific outputs on Tai Chi research from 1980 to 2020, explore the frontiers, identify cooperation networks, track research trends and highlight emerging hotspots. Relevant publications were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database between 1980 and 2020. Bibliometric visualization and comparative analysis of authors, cited authors, journals, co-cited journals, institutions, countries, references, and keywords were systematically conducted using CiteSpace software. A total of 1078 publications satisfied the search criteria, and the trend of annual related publications was generally in an upward trend, although with some fluctuations. China (503) and Harvard University (74) were the most prolific country and institution, respectively. Most of the related researches were published in the journals with a focus on sport sciences, alternative medicine, geriatrics gerontology, and rehabilitation. Our results indicated that the current concerns and difficulties of Tai Chi research are "Intervention method", "Targeted therapy", "Applicable population", "Risk factors", and "Research quality". The frontiers and promising domains of Tai Chi exercise in the health science field are preventions and rehabilitations of "Fall risk", "Cardiorespiratory related disease", "Stroke", "Parkinson's disease", and "Depression", which should receive more attention in the future.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a common condition in older people and increasing evidence suggests that it can be considered as a potential risk factor for falls and fractures. However, no studies on this topic from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are available. Thus, we assessed this association among older adults from five LMICs (China, India, Ghana, Mexico, and Russia). Community-based, nationally representative, cross-sectional data of the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health were analyzed. Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of low skeletal muscle mass based on indirect population formula, and either slow gait or low handgrip strength. The presence of fall-related injury was ascertained through self-reported information. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and meta-analysis were conducted. The sample consisted of 13,101 individuals aged ≥65 years (mean (SD) age 72.6 (11.3) years; 45% males). The prevalence of fall-related injury was higher among those with sarcopenia than in those without this condition (e.g., Mexico 9.8% vs. 2.7%). Adjusted analyses showed that sarcopenia was associated with a 1.85 (95%CI = 1.24-2.77) times higher odds for fall-related injury, with a low level of between-country heterogeneity. Future studies of longitudinal design may shed light on whether sarcopenia in LMICs may be considered as a risk factor for falls.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of a 16-week Tai Chi (TC) intervention on cutaneous sensitivity and proprioception among older adults with and without sensory loss. Thirty-six older adults were divided into sensory loss and control groups, and they underwent a 16-week TC intervention. Significant interactions were detected in heel cutaneous sensitivity (p = 0.046, F = 4.419) and knee flexion (p = 0.043, F = 4.580), extension (p = 0.027, F = 5.529) and ankle plantar-flexion proprioception (p = 0.037, F = 4.860). The post hoc test indicated that in the sensory loss group, heel cutaneous sensitivity threshold (p = 0.034) and knee flexion (p = 0.004), extension (p = 0.002) and ankle plantar-flexion (p = 0.023) proprioception threshold decreased at week 17, whereas in the control group, knee flexion (p = 0.029) proprioception threshold decreased at week 17. TC intervention improved cutaneous sensitivity at more sites and proprioception in more joints among the older adults with sensory loss. TC intervention is a good option for older adults to exercise, and it is more effective among older adults with sensory loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the highest mortality diseases in the world, which seriously threatens human health and quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this study is to systematically analyze the effects of mind-body exercise on cardiopulmonary function, blood pressure and QOL in CHD patients, and to provide scientific evidence-based exercise prescription for patients with coronary heart disease. METHODS This research review will include the following electronic databases from its establishment to December 2020: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, and Wanfang. Objective to search randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about the effects of mind-body exercise on cardiopulmonary function, blood pressure and QOL in patients with coronary heart disease. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide strong evidence for the efficacy and safety of mind-body exercise in patients with coronary heart disease. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval will not be necessary since this systematic review and meta-analysis will not contain any private information of participants or violate their human rights.

Abstract
Proprioception while standing is important for the balance control, but the proprioception has not been investigated in the unconstrained standing conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of age and gender on the thresholds of perception and muscle response in response to the support surface rotation. The experiment was designed so that the thresholds depend mainly on the proprioception, i.e., quasistatic condition (0.2∘/s rotation of the platform) with eyes closed. Fifty-two healthy subjects (half young and half elderly) participated in this study. A platform was developed which can be rotated in four directions. Perception threshold angle was registered from subjects’ pressing a button. Muscle response threshold angle was determined as the earlier onset of EMG in lower limb muscles. Two standing conditions (feet together and natural stance) were tested. Repeated-measures ANOVA showed that both thresholds increased with age. Post hoc tests revealed (1) that the perception threshold was greater for women than men in the elderly and (2) both thresholds of the elderly were greater for the feet-together stance than natural stance. Inferior perception sensitivity of platform rotation in elderly women may be associated with inferior performance in cortical postural control and greater fall ratio compared to elderly men, which suggests the need of proprioception trainings.

Abstract
Objectives: The present study aimed to systematically analyze the effects of physical activity on executive function, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and activities of daily living (ADLs) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and to provide a scientific evidence-based exercise prescription. Methods: Both Chinese and English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang) were used as sources of data to search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 1980 and December 2019 relating to the effects of physical activity on executive function, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and ADL issues in AD patients. Sixteen eligible RCTs were ultimately included in the meta-analysis. Results: Physical activity had significant benefits on executive function [standard mean difference (SMD) = 0.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.22–0.62, p < 0.05], working memory (SMD = 0.28, 95% CI 0.11–0.45, p < 0.05), cognitive flexibility (SMD = 0.23, 95% CI −0.02 to 0.47, p < 0.01), and ADLs (SMD = 0.68, 95% CI 0.19–1.16, p < 0.05) among AD patients. Subgroup analysis indicated that, for executive function issues, more than 60 min per session for 16 weeks of moderate-to-high-intensity dual-task exercises or multimodal exercise had a greater effect on AD patients. For working memory and cognitive flexibility issues, 60–90 min of moderate-intensity dual-task exercises 1–4 times/week was more effective. For ADL issues, 30–90 min of multimodal exercise at 60–79% of maximal heart rate (MHR) 3–4 times/week had a greater effect on AD patients. Conclusions: Physical activity was found to lead to significant improvements in executive function, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and ADLs in AD patients and can be used as an effective method for clinical exercise intervention in these patients. However, more objective, scientific, and effective RCTs are needed to confirm this conclusion.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effectiveness of an evidence-based 12-week Tai Chi course designed to improve balance and physical function in a population of older veterans. METHODS Community dwelling veterans of all ages with gait and balance problems were invited to participate in the Tai Chi program. Participants completed the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) at baseline and again at the end of the program. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize study participants' characteristics. The change from baseline to the end of the 12-week program was calculated for each of the three primary outcome variables (BBS, TUG, FES-I). RESULTS Twenty-two veterans, aged 58 years and above, with perceived gait and/or balance issues were enrolled in the program with completion by 11 veterans. Veterans who completed their final assessments showed the BBS, improved significantly (p = 0.004) from baseline to the 12-week assessment. The TUG scores improved by a median of 1.3 s (p = 0.022). There was not a significant change in the FES-I. CONCLUSIONS Preliminary findings provide evidence of the effectiveness of a 12-week Tai Chi program to improve functional outcomes for older veterans with mild to moderate gait and balance problems.

Abstract
Background This review aims to investigate the efficacy of Tai Chi Chuan on subjective sleep quality among adults. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), and the Wanfang Database from their inception to August 2019 and identified 25 eligible studies that were published in both English and Chinese. Results 24 out of 25 studies were identified to be high-quality studies according to the PEDro scale. The pooled results confirmed that Tai Chi Chuan elicited moderate improvements in subjective sleep quality (SMD = −0.512, 95% CI [−0.767, −0.257], P < 0.001). Notably, Tai Chi Chuan yielded more significant effects on sleep quality among the healthy population (SMD = −0.684, 95% CI [−1.056, −0.311], P < 0.001) than the clinical population (SMD = −0.395, 95% CI [−0.742, −0.047], P=0.026) and more benefits among the Asian population (SMD = −0.977, 95% CI [−1.446, −0.508], P < 0.001) than the American population (SMD = −0.259, 95% CI [−0.624, 0.105], P=0.164). After controlling the methodological quality of studies, it has been noted that Asians could achieve the most significant sleep-promoting benefit when Tai Chi Chuan was practiced between 60 and 90 min per session. Conclusions Available data implied that subjective sleep quality was improved via Tai Chi training, but more thorough studies must be executed to ascertain our findings and optimize Tai Chi practices accordingly toward various populations.

Abstract
Background Age-associated decline in cognition and balance may cause severe ability loss for daily living activities among middle-aged and older adults. The relationship between cognition and balance in this aging population remains to be explored. Objective The present study Is exploratory in nature and aimed to examine the relationship between balance (both static and dynamic components) and global cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults through Tai Chi (TC) practice as a research avenue. Methods A short-term (12 weeks) intervention of TC was conducted among middle-aged and older adults in the community setting. Global cognitive function (using the Chinese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score (MoCA) and balance (i.e., one leg standing test score; Timed Up and Go Test score, TUGT) of all participants were assessed before and after the intervention. Age, body mass index (BMI), sex, and physical fitness variables (Chair Stand Test, CST; the 6-Meter Walk Test, 6MWT) were also collected as confounding factors. Results Significant moderator effects of baseline CST on the association between the dichotomized baseline MoCA score and the baseline left leg balance score (p = 0.0247), the baseline right leg balance score (p = 0.0140) and the baseline TUGT score (p = 0.0346) were found. Change score of left score balance (p = 0.0192) and change score of TUGT (p = 0.0162) were found to be significantly associated with change score of cognitive function. Conclusion Cognitive function and balance are interrelated in middle-aged and older adults. The association between global cognitive function and balance Is moderated by strength of lower limbs. The change scores of cognitive function and balance introduced by TC training were found to be positively correlated. Future research Is warranted to further confirm the cause-effect relationship of cognitive function and balance and its influencing factors among middle-aged and older adults utilizing intervention studies with larger sample sizes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of Tai Chi (TC) in patients with myocardial infarction and provide up-to-date evidence for its application. DATA SOURCES Three English databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) and 3 Chinese databases (China Knowledge Resource Integrated, Wanfang, Weipu) were screened for the time period between January 1, 1976 and May 31, 2019. STUDY SELECTION Seven randomized and controlled experiments were included. DATA EXTRACTION Two independent researchers under 2 independent advisors extracted and classified the data from all relevant studies based on the prespecified inclusion criteria and rules for data extraction. DATA SYNTHESIS A total of 615 patients were included in this study. The TC group was comprised of 294 patients, and the control group included 261 patients. The results revealed that TC has significant effects on the outcomes of the 6-minute walk (standardized mean difference, 1.30; 95% confidence interval, 0.50-2.11) and left ventricular ejection fraction (standardized mean difference, 1; 95% confidence interval, 0.43-1.57) compared with no or low-density exercise. Also, TC positively affected the quality of life, pro-B type natriuretic peptide, and short form-36. However, TC did not significantly affect activities of daily living (P=.060), sense of coherence-13 (P=.057) and N-terminal-pro-brain natriuretic peptide (P=.081). A moderate to high heterogeneity was observed across all comparisons. CONCLUSIONS Compared with no exercise or other types of low-intensity physical activities, TC improved the outcome of the 6-minute walk, left ventricular ejection fraction, quality of life, and short form-36 scores, but reduced the outcome of pro-B type natriuretic peptide in patients with myocardial infarction. Therefore, TC could be an effective exercise option for cardiac rehabilitation. More research should be done to identify the effects of TC on academic functioning and to determine ways of motivating patients to use preventive TC interventions.

Abstract
Background: Cognitive decline is age relevant and it can start as early as middle age. The decline becomes more obvious among older adults, which is highly associated with increased risk of developing dementia (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease). White matter damage was found to be related to cognitive decline through aging. The purpose of the current study was to compare the effects of Tai Chi (TC) versus walking on the brain white matter network among Chinese elderly women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted where 42 healthy elderly women were included. Tai Chi practitioners (20 females, average age: 62.9 ± 2.38 years, education level 9.05 ± 1.8 years) and the matched walking participants (22 females, average age: 63.27 ± 3.58 years, educational level: 8.86 ± 2.74 years) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) scans. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and graph theory were employed to study the data, construct the white matter matrix, and compare the brain network attributes between the two groups. Results: Results from graph-based analyses showed that the small-world attributes were higher for the TC group than for the walking group (p < 0.05, Cohen’s d = 1.534). Some effects were significant (p < 0.001) with very large effect sizes. Meanwhile, the aggregation coefficient and local efficiency attributes were also higher for the TC group than for the walking group (p > 0.05). However, no significant difference was found between the two groups in node attributes and edge analysis. Conclusion: Regular TC training is more conducive to optimize the brain functioning and networking of the elderly. The results of the current study help to identify the mechanisms underlying the cognitive protective effects of TC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is an important cause of bone fractures and even a cause of threaten to the lives of elderly people. Mind-body exercises are beneficial interventions for improving flexibility, controlling body balance, and reducing pain. To assess the effect of mind-body exercise on osteoporosis in aging people, we will perform this systematic review. METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which carried out about mind-body exercise for osteoporosis will be included. Web of Science, PubMed, Science Direct, Medline, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang will be searched from inception to January 2020. The outcomes will include bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), body balance, function of lower extremity, pain, fearing level, and quality of life. Trial reporting quality will be assessed by 2 reviewers independently and Review Manager 5.3 software will be used for meta-analysis. Trial registration is under PROSPERO (CRD42020165385). RESULTS Based on the current evidence, the potential rank of the efficacy and safety of mind-body exercises for BMD, BMC, body balance, function of lower extremity, pain, fearing level and quality of life will be assessed, and a prioritization regimen will be summarized. CONCLUSIONS Evidence from this systematic review could be useful for patients, clinical practitioners, and guideline-makers to select an optimum proposal of mild-body exercises for older adults with osteoporosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of long-term Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) practice on practitioners' brain functional specialization compare with the TCC novices. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING A psychology Institute. PARTICIPANTS TCC practitioners (N=22) (52.4±6.8y; 7 men; educated years: 12.18±3.03y) and 18 healthy adults (54.8±6.8y; 8 men; education years: 11.78±2.90y) matched by age, sex, and education were enrolled. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning and cognitive test to measure the differences in functional specialization and cognitive function. Functional specialization was evaluated by voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method. RESULTS Lower middle frontal gyrus VMHC in TCC practitioners compared to controls. For TCC practitioners, the longer they practice, the lower their VMHC in precentral and precuneus. TCC practitioners showed better cognition performance. CONCLUSIONS Changed VMHC indicated that TCC practice could enhance functional specialization in the middle frontal cortex of practitioners, which may be associated with higher-order cognitive ability.

Abstract
Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a common disease affecting a large number of old individuals worldwide. This study aimed to explore the effects of Baduanjin Qigong in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Fifty participants with knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 25) or a control group (n = 25). Participants in the experimental group received Baduanjin Qigong training for 12 weeks, with three sessions per week lasting 40 min per session. Participants in the control group did not receive any additional physical training. All of participants completed outcome (proprioception, postural stability, and functional ability) assessments at three time points (baseline, Week 8, 12). Results: Proprioception and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index function were statistically improved at eighth and 12th week of the intervention in the Baduanjin Qigong group (p < 0.05), while the control group did not have any significant changes. For postural stability at the anterior-posterior direction with eyes closed, Baduanjin Qigong group showed significant improvement compared to controls after the 12 weeks of intervention (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Regular Baduanjin Qigong practice helped the improvement of knee joint proprioception and postural stability, and reduction of pain, stiffness, and functional impairments of old adults with knee osteoarthritis. Well-designed randomized controlled trials with long-term assessment are needed. The trial was registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-IOR-16010042). Abstract
Objectives: Mind–body exercise has been generally recognized as a beneficial strategy to improve mental health in those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, to date, no attempt has been made to collate this literature. The aim of the present study was to systematically analyze the effects of mind–body exercise for COPD patients with anxiety and depression and provide scientific evidence-based exercise prescription. Methods: both Chinese and English databases (PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, Baidu Scholar) were used as sources of data to search randomized controlled trials (RCT) relating to mind–body exercise in COPD patients with anxiety and depression that were published between January 1982 to June 2019. 13 eligible RCT studies were finally used for meta-analysis. Results: Mind–body exercise (tai chi, health qigong, yoga) had significant benefits on COPD patients with anxiety (SMD = −0.76, 95% CI −0.91 to −0.60, p = 0.04, I2 = 47.4%) and depression (SMD = −0.86, 95% CI −1.14 to −0.58, p = 0.000, I2 = 71.4%). Sub-group analysis indicated that, for anxiety, 30–60 min exercise session for 24 weeks of health qigong or yoga had a significant effect on patients with COPD who are more than 70 years and have more than a 10-year disease course. For depression, 2–3 times a week, 30–60 min each time of health qigong had a significant effect on patients with COPD patients who are more than 70 years old and have less than a 10-year disease course. Conclusions: Mind–body exercise could reduce levels of anxiety and depression in those with COPD. More robust RCT are required on this topic.

Abstract
Purpose: To systematically evaluate the effects of mind-body exercises (Tai Chi, Yoga, and Health Qigong) on motor function (UPDRS, Timed-Up-and-Go, Balance), depressive symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) of Parkinson's patients (PD). Methods: Through computer system search and manual retrieval, PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Database, and CQVIP were used. Articles were retrieved up to the published date of June 30, 2019. Following the Cochrane Collaboration System Evaluation Manual (version 5.1.0), two researchers independently evaluated the quality and bias risk of each article, including 22 evaluated articles. The Pedro quality score of 6 points or more was found for 86% (19/22) of these studies, of which 21 were randomized controlled trials with a total of 1199 subjects; and the trial intervention time ranged from 4 to 24 weeks. Interventions in the control group included no-intervention controls, placebo, waiting-lists, routine care, and non-sports controls. Meta-analysis was performed on the literature using RevMan 5.3 statistical software, and heterogeneity analysis was performed using Stata 14.0 software. Results: (1) Mind-body exercises significantly improved motor function in PD patients, including UPDRS (SMD = -0.61, p < 0.001), TUG (SMD = -1.47, p < 0.001) and balance function (SMD = 0.79, p < 0.001). (2) Mind-body exercises also had significant effects on depression (SMD = -1.61, p = 0.002) and QoL (SMD = 0.66, p < 0.001). (3) Among the indicators, UPDRS (I2 = 81%) and depression (I2 = 91%) had higher heterogeneity; according to the results of the separate combined effect sizes of TUG(I2 = 29%), Balance(I2 = 16%) and QoL(I2 = 35%), it shows that the heterogeneity is small; (4) After meta-regression analysis of the age limit and other possible confounding factors, further subgroup analysis showed that the reason for the heterogeneity of UPDRS motor function may be related to the sex of PD patients and severity of the disease; the outcome of depression was heterogeneous. The reason for this may be the use of specific drugs in the experiment and the duration of intervention in the trial. Conclusion: (1) Mind-body exercises were found to have significant improvements in motor function, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease, and can be used as an effective method for clinical exercise intervention in PD patients. (2) Future clinical intervention programs for PD patients need to fully consider specific factors such as gender, severity of disease, specific drug use, and intervention cycle to effectively control heterogeneity factors, so that the clinical exercise intervention program for PD patients is objective, scientific, and effective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND. The integration of a life environment enabling people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to fully exercise their independence must be well prepared. PURPOSE. Review and describe interventions intended to develop the independence at home of people with ASD. METHOD. The PRISMA method was used to perform a systematic review based on 19 keywords, grouped under three concepts: (a) population age (adolescents and adults), (b) diagnosis (ASD), and (c) independence. FINDINGS. Seven effective interventions were identified in the 20 selected articles: (a) video self-modeling, (b) video modeling, (c) behavioural interventions, (d) video prompting, (e) transition planning program, (f) training in the use of a cognitive aid, and (g) social skills group. IMPLICATIONS. The results of this review will help guide practitioners in the implementation of interventions that foster the development of independence at home of people with ASD.

Abstract
This research aims to evaluate the effect of virtual reality (VR) games on balance recovery of children with cerebral palsy (CP) by quantitatively synthesizing the existing literature, and to further determine the impact of VR game intervention (the duration of each intervention, intervention frequency, intervention cycle, and total intervention time) on the balance recovery of children with CP. To this end, relevant literature up until 3 August 2019 was retrieved from Chinese databases (CNKI and Wanfang Data) and the databases in other languages (Web of Science, Pubmed, EBSCOhost, Informit, Scopus, Science Direct, and ProQuest), and bias analysis was conducted with the PEDro scale in this research. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected and underwent meta-analysis, and combined effect size was calculated with a random effects model. The results showed that VR games may improve the balance of children with CP (Hedge’s g = 0.29; 95% CI 0.10–0.48), and no significant influence of the intervention on balance of children with CP was shown in the subgroup analysis. In conclusion, VR games played a positive role in the improvement of balance of children with CP, but these results should be viewed with caution owing to current methodological defects (difference in measurement, heterogeneity of control groups, intervention combined with other treatments, etc.).
