Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge and Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex (AP) is a synergistic drug combination used to treat depression. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the therapeuticeffects of AP requires further elucidation. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the potential of AP in the treatment of depression and its mechanism of action. METHODS AND METHODS The depression model was established by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) and treated with different doses of AP. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS and network pharmacology methods were used to analyze the composition and potential targets of AP. Molecular docking, affinity ultrafiltration (AUF) and cellular thermal shift assays (CETSA) techniques were used to analyze the interaction between AP components and key targets. The therapeutic effects of AP active ingredients were explored in LPS-induced cell models. RESULTS AP ameliorated CUMS-induced despair behaviors, regulate M1/M2 phenotypic balance of microglia and reduced neuroinflammation. Then, A total of 10 brain components were identified in the mPFC of CUMS rats. Based on these chemical compositions, PTGS2 was found to be at the core of the regulatory network through network analysis. All components of AP had good interaction with PTGS2, among which Neomangiferin and PTGS2 had the strongest binding capacity. AP can decrease PTGS2 activity, decrease PGE2 production and EP2 expression downstream, and reduce inflammatory response. In LPS-induced BV2 cells, Neomangiferin regulated the imbalance of M1/M2 microglia, reduced the release of pro-inflammatory factors, and decreased the expression of PTGS2, PEG2, EP2, cAMP, and Epac1. CONCLUSION AP improves the potential therapeutic benefits of depression by targeting the PTGS2 signaling pathway, thereby promoting the wider use of AP in depression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Autoimmune diseases often present in a systemic manner, affecting various organs and tissues. Involvement of the central and peripheral nervous system is not uncommon in these conditions and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, early recognition of the neuropsychiatric manifestations associated with rheumatologic diseases is essential for the introduction of appropriate therapies with the objective of providing a better quality of life for individuals. OBJECTIVE To provide a literature review of the neuropsychiatric manifestations related to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and primary Sjögren's Disease (pSD), through the description of signs, symptoms, and immunological variables associated with these conditions. METHODS A literature review was conducted by searching for national and international articles available in the SciELO and PubMed databases related to the description of neurological and psychiatric manifestations in patients with the rheumatologic diseases of interest in this study. RESULTS The main NP manifestations presented in SLE and pSD are discussed, focusing on clinical presentation and etiology. Treatment option are, however, mainly based on expert opinion, since a few randomized controlled trials have been done. CONCLUSIONS There is a high prevalence of neuropsychiatric manifestations associated with SLE and pSD. The variety of physiopathology pathways may explain the variety of symptoms, however pathological findings are rare. Multicenter studies on attribution protocols and treatment are necessary to address the current gaps.

Abstract
Introduction Lactobacillus species have attracted more and more attention as a potential antibiotic substitute for human health and animal production due to their remarkable antibacterial effects. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear. This experiment's goal was to investigate the impacts of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, immune function of broiler chickens and their mechanism. Methods One hundred and eighty 1-day-old AA broilers were used and randomly allocated into 3 treatment groups with 6 replicates of 10 chickens per replicate. The 3 treatment groups were control group (CK), L. acidophilus added group (LAB-E, 1.0 × 108 CFU/kg) for the first 7 days; L. acidophilus added group (LAB-A, 1.0 × 108 CFU/kg) for the whole experimental period. Broilers had free access to water and feed. Results The results showed that addition of L. acidophilus for the whole experimental period significantly decreased ADFI, FCR and the abdominal fat percentage of broilers (p < 0.05), tended to increase the levels of IgG in broiler serum (p = 0.093). The LAB-A group had higher HDL-C content and IL-2, IL-4 content, and lower level of LPS in broiler serum compared to the controls (p < 0.05). Discussion In conclusion, L. acidophilus improved feed efficiency and immune function of broilers by controlling nutrient metabolism and inflammation responses of broilers. L. acidophilus can be used as a potential substitute for antibiotics in broiler production.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare rates of post-operative complications, healthcare utilization, opioid prescribing patterns, and secondary knee surgery in patients with versus without a preexisting anxiety or depressive disorder (ADD) undergoing isolated primary arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM). METHODS The TriNetX database was queried from inception to compare patients over 18-years-old who underwent isolated primary APM with versus without a pre-existing ADD. Patients were matched in a 1:1 ratio based on demographic factors and comorbidities, including diabetes and hypertension. The following outcomes were collected: 1) post-operative complications and healthcare utilization within ninety days, 2) proportion of patients prescribed an opioid within one year, and 3) subsequent knee surgery within two years, specifically ipsilateral or contralateral meniscus surgery or total knee arthroplasty. Two subgroup analyses were conducted. Opioid naive patients with and without an ADD were compared based on the proportion of patients prescribed an opioid within one year of APM. Rates of revision meniscus surgery on the ipsilateral knee were also compared within two years of APM. RESULTS Within 90 days, patients with a pre-existing ADD (n=26,507), compared to those without (n=26,507), had higher rates of healthcare utilization, including readmission (p<0.001), and medical complications, like cerebrovascular accident (p=0.002). A greater proportion of patients with an ADD were prescribed opioids at all chosen time points within one year of APM. Similarly, a greater proportion of opioid naive patients with an ADD were prescribed opioids within six months (p<0.001) and one year (p<0.001). Patients with an ADD also had higher rates of total knee arthroplasty (p=0.001) and ipsilateral revision meniscus surgery (left knee: p=0.020; right knee: p=0.019) within two years. CONCLUSION Patients with an anxiety or depressive disorder have higher rates of healthcare utilization, medical complications, opioid prescriptions, and subsequent knee surgery after isolated primary arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental health condition characterized by persistent depression, impaired cognition, and reduced activity. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota (GM) imbalance is closely linked to the emergence and advancement of MDD, highlighting the potential significance of regulating the "Microbiota-Gut-Brain" (MGB) axis to impact the development of MDD. Natural products (NPs), characterized by broad biological activities, low toxicity, and multi-target characteristics, offer unique advantages in antidepressant treatment by regulating MGB axis. PURPOSE This review was aimed to explore the intricate relationship between the GM and the brain, as well as host responses, and investigated the mechanisms underlying the MGB axis in MDD development. It also explored the pharmacological mechanisms by which NPs modulate MGB axis to exert antidepressant effects and addressed current research limitations. Additionally, it proposed new strategies for future preclinical and clinical applications in the MDD domain. METHODS To study the effects and mechanism by which NPs exert antidepressant effects through mediating the MGB axis, data were collected from Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect from initial establishment to March 2024. NPs were classified and summarized by their mechanisms of action. RESULTS NPs, such as flavonoids,alkaloids,polysaccharides,saponins, terpenoids, can treat MDD by regulating the MGB axis. Its mechanism includes balancing GM, regulating metabolites and neurotransmitters such as SCAFs, 5-HT, BDNF, inhibiting neuroinflammation, improving neural plasticity, and increasing neurogenesis. CONCLUSIONS NPs display good antidepressant effects, and have potential value for clinical application in the prevention and treatment of MDD by regulating the MGB axis. However, in-depth study of the mechanisms by which antidepressant medications affect MGB axis will also require considerable effort in clinical and preclinical research, which is essential for the development of effective antidepressant treatments.

Abstract
An increasing number of people undergo anesthesia and surgery. Perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders are common central nervous system complications with similar pathogeneses. These conditions pose a deleterious threat to human health and a significant societal burden. In recent years, numerous studies have focused on the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the central nervous system via the gut-brain axis. Its involvement in perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders has attracted considerable attention. This review aimed to elucidate the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the pathogenesis of perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders, as well as the value of targeted interventions and treatments.

Abstract
The theoretical foundations of understanding psychiatric disorders are undergoing changes. Explaining behaviour and neuroendocrine cell communication leaning towards immunology represents a different approach compared to previous models for understanding complex central nervous system processes. One such approach is the study of immunoglobulins or autoantibodies, and their effect on peptide hormones in the neuro-endocrine system. In the present review, we provide an overview of the literature on neuropeptide/transmitter and autoantibody modulation in psychiatric disorders featuring emotional problems and aggression, including associated illness behaviour. Finally, we discuss the role of psycho-immunology as a growing field in the understanding of psychiatric disorders, and that modulation and regulation by IgG autoAbs represent a relatively new subcategory in psycho-immunology, where studies are currently being conducted.

Abstract
Inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of stroke and depression. We aimed to investigate the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and depression in American adults with stroke. Adults with stroke were enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2018 in the USA. The DII was obtained from a 24-h dietary recall interview for each individual. Multivariate regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between DII and depression in adults with stroke. The mean age of the 1239 participants was 63·85 years (50·20 % women), and the prevalence of depression was 18·26 %. DII showed a linear and positive association with severe depression in adults with stroke (OR 1·359; 95 % CI 1·021, 1·810; P for non-linearity = 0·493). Compared with those in the lowest tertile of the DII, adults with stroke in the third tertile of the DII had a 3·222-fold higher risk of severe depression (OR 3·222; 95 % CI 1·150, 9·026). In the stratified analyses, the association between DII score and severe depression was more significant in older adults (P for interaction = 0·010) but NS with respect to sex (P for interaction = 0·184) or smoking status (P for interaction = 0·396). No significant association was found between DII and moderate-to-moderately severe depression in adults with stroke. In conclusion, an increase in DII score was associated with a higher likelihood of severe depression in older adults with stroke.

Abstract
Introduction The effect of mental and behavioural disorders (MBD) on the risk of tendon ruptures after flexor tendon repair is not well understood. This study aimed to analyse the association between MBD and tendon rupture after flexor tendon repair in zones I and II. Methods Data from the Swedish National Registry for Hand Surgery (HAKIR) on patients with a complete flexor tendon repair at our department between 2012 and 2019 were followed for a minimum of 2 years to assess the rate of rupture. Independent variables were collected from HAKIR and clinical records: prevalence MBD based on ICD-10 codes F0-F99, age, sex, injured tendon, number of injured fingers, day to surgery, core suture, digital nerve injury, smoking, injury mechanism, and rehabilitation method. Multiple logistic regression was used to assess the association between variables. Results A cohort of 593 patients with 49 ruptures (8.2%) was identified. Potential causes of rupture were non-adherence behaviour in 16 (33%), accidents in seven (14%), infections in six (12%), and no clear cause in 20 (41%) patients. Patients with MBD had an association to rupture (OR 3.6), 17.7% ruptures compared to 7.2% in patients with no diagnosed disorders. Patients >50 years of age had a higher risk compared to patients <25 years (OR 4.3), 15% compared to 3.9%' respectively. Men had a higher risk compared to women (OR 2.9), 10% compared to 4.3%' respectively. Conclusion We identified an association between the prevalence of mental and behavioural disorders and rupture after flexor tendon repair.

Abstract
Introduction: The relationship between psychiatric disorders, including depression, and invasive interventions has been a topic of debate in recent literature. While these conditions can impact the quality of life and subjective perceptions of surgical outcomes, the literature lacks consensus regarding the association between depression and objective perioperative medical and surgical complications, especially in the neurosurgical domain. Methods: MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library were queried in a comprehensive manner from inception until 10 November 2023, with no language restrictions, for citations investigating the association between depression and length of hospitalization, medical and surgical complications, and objective postoperative outcomes including readmission, reoperation, and non-routine discharge in patients undergoing spine surgery. Results: A total of 26 articles were considered in this systematic review. Upon pooled analysis of the primary outcome, statistically significantly higher rates were observed for several complications, including delirium (OR:1.92), deep vein thrombosis (OR:3.72), fever (OR:6.34), hematoma formation (OR:4.7), hypotension (OR:4.32), pulmonary embolism (OR:3.79), neurological injury (OR:6.02), surgical site infection (OR:1.36), urinary retention (OR:4.63), and urinary tract infection (OR:1.72). While readmission (OR:1.35) and reoperation (OR:2.22) rates, as well as non-routine discharge (OR:1.72) rates, were significantly higher in depressed patients, hospitalization length was comparable to non-depressed controls. Conclusions: The results of this review emphasize the significant increase in complications and suboptimal outcomes noted in patients with depression undergoing spinal surgery. Although a direct causal relationship may not be established, addressing psychiatric aspects in patient care is crucial for providing comprehensive medical attention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Psoriasis is a systemic disease of the skin and nails associated with a wide range of comorbidities such as depression, psoriatic arthritis and metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVES The study aimed to examine a potential association between inflammatory markers (C- reactive protein [CRP] and erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR]) and depression in patients with psoriasis. METHODS A total of 80 individuals were enrolled in the study. Case participants included 28 patients diagnosed with Psoriasis (Beck Depression Inventory-II: :0-13) and 24 patients diagnosed with Psoriasis and Depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II:14-63). Twenty-eight (28) healthy participants comprised the control group.Psoriasis severity was evaluated by using Psoriasis Area and Severity Index, Physician Global Assessment, Body Surface Area and Dermatology Life Quality Index. Written approval was obtained for its use in this study: Cardiff University (09/2015). Other factors considered in the study were obesity using the Body Mass Index, the levels of stress using the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the presence of insomnia using the Athens Insomnia Scale. Blood draws and inflammatory markers measurements were performed for all participants. RESULTS Both CRP and ESR levels were higher in the case group (ie Psoriasis and Depression and Psoriasis) compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, psoriatic patients with depression showed increased CRP and ESR levels compared to those of psoriatic patients without depression. CONCLUSIONS The evaluation of both CRP and ESR and their use to detect the presence of depression in patients with psoriasis can be an important tool for their holistic treatment of theirs.

Abstract
Background The exact causal mechanisms of depression remain unclear due to the complexity of the triggers, which has led to limitations in treating depression using modern drugs. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is as effective as medication in treating depression without toxic side effects. Typically, HIIT requires less time commitment (i.e., shorter exercise duration) and exhibits pronounced benefits on depressive symptoms than other forms of physical exercise. This review summarizes the risk reduction and clinical effects of HIIT for depression and discusses the underlying mechanisms, providing a theoretical basis for utilizing HIIT in treating depression. Methods A database search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception up to October 2022. The methodological quality of the included literature was evaluated by the physiotherapy evidence database (PEDro) scale criteria. The review focused on evaluating the changes in depression risk or symptoms of HIIT interventions in healthy individuals, patients with depression, and patients with other disorders co-morbid with depression. Consequently, the mechanisms associated with depression related HIIT were summarized. Results A total of 586 participants (52 % female; mean age: 43.58±8.93 years) from 22 studies were included. Implementing HIIT using different exercise types alleviates depressive symptoms in individuals with depression and in individuals with depression who have exhibited comorbidities and reduced depression scale scores in subjects immediately after acute exercise. In addition, the long-interval HIIT and short-interval HIIT in the treatment of patients with cardiovascular or psychiatric disorders may reduce depressive symptoms via complex exercise-related changes on several levels, including by effecting the following measures: releasing monoamines, reducing neuronal death, inducing neurogenesis, modulating the functional homeostasis of the HPA axis, and enhancing the level of inflammation in the body. Conclusion HIIT is a relatively safe and effective antidepressant, which may involve multiple neurobiological mechanisms (release of monoamines, reducing neuronal death, inducing neurogenesis, modulating the functional homeostasis of the HPA axis, and enhancing the level of inflammation in the body), thereby reducing the risk or symptoms of depression in participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Anxious depression (AD) has been extensively studied. However, fewer studies have examined sex differences in the prevalence of suicide attempts among AD patients. This study aimed to explore sex differences in suicide attempts and risk factors in patients with AD. METHODS 1380 first episode drug-naïve patients with AD were recruited. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were measured using a self-administered demographic questionnaire. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Inventory (HAMA), and positive subscale of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to assess patients' clinical symptoms. We also measured the patient's blood glucose, lipids, and thyroid axis hormone levels. RESULTS There were no sex differences in the prevalence of suicide attempts in patients with FEDN anxious depression. In addition, binary logistic regression analysis showed that HAMA score, TSH levels, and TPOAb levels significantly predicted suicide attempts in both male and female patients with AD, while HAMD score significantly predicted suicide attempts in female patients with AD only. CONCLUSIONS The severity of anxiety and higher levels of TSH and TPOAb were associated with an increased risk for suicide attempts in both male and female patients with AD, whereas the severity of depression was only associated with suicide attempts in females.

Abstract
The intervals before and after major surgery is a high-risk period for older adults; in this setting, anxiety and depression are common and serious problems. We comprehensively reviewed current evidence on perioperative anxiety and depression in older adults, focusing on epidemiology, impact, correlates, medication risks, and treatment. Principles of perioperative mental healthcare are proposed based on the findings. Prevalence estimates of clinically significant anxiety and depression range from 5% to 45% for anxiety and 6% to 52% for depression, depending on surgical populations and measurement tools. Anxiety and depression may increase risk for surgical complications and reduce patient participation during rehabilitation. Medical comorbidities, pain, insomnia, cognitive impairment, and delirium are common co-occurring problems. Concomitant uses of central nervous system acting medications (benzodiazepines, anticholinergics, and opioids) amplify the risks of delirium and falls. Based on these findings, we propose that anxiety and depression care should be part of perioperative management in older adults; components include education, psychological support, opioid-sparing pain management, sleep management, deprescribing central nervous system active medications, and continuation and optimization of existing antidepressants. More research is needed to test and improve these care strategies.

Abstract
Introduction Some studies have shown the effectiveness of tea in reducing depression. Gut flora dysfunction is strongly associated with depression. The mechanism by which Ziyan green tea ameliorates depression is not clear. Methods In this study, we examined the impact of Ziyan green tea on mice exhibiting symptoms similar to depression. We specifically focused on the role of intestinal flora and its metabolites. We first established a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model to induce depressive symptoms and conducted behavioural tests, biochemical tests, and pathological tissue analysis. We also investigated gut microbiota changes by 16S rRNA sequencing and measured faecal metabolites in mice using UHPLC-MS/MS. Results The results showed that Ziyan green tea intervention improved depression-like behaviour, neurobiochemical factors, and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory factors in CUMS mice. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that different microbial communities (Corynebacterium, Faecalibaculum, Enterorhabdus, Desulfovibrio) correlation with differential metabolites (Cholic acid, Deoxycholic acid, etc.) and depression-related biochemical indicators (5-HT, DA, BDNF, IL-6, and TNF-α). Discussion In conclusion, our findings suggest that both low and high-dose interventions of Ziyan green tea have positive preventive effects on CUMS mice without dose dependence, partly because they mainly affect intestinal Purine Metabolism, Bile Acid Biosynthesis and Cysteine Metabolism in CUMS mice, thus stimulating brain 5-HT, DA and BDNF, and decreasing the inflammatory factors IL-6, TNF-α, activate the composition of intestinal flora, improve the intestinal flora environment and thus promote the production of intestinal metabolites, which can be used for depression treatment. It is suggested that Ziyan green tea may achieve an antidepressant effect through the gut-microbiota-brain axis.

Abstract
The association between the clinical picture of symptomatic women with silicone breast implants (SBI) and dysregulated immunity was in dispute for decades. In the current study, we describe for the first time the functional activity of purified IgG antibodies derived from symptomatic women with SBIs (suffering from subjective/autonomic-related symptoms), both in vitro and in vivo. We found that IgGs, derived from symptomatic women with SBIs, dysregulate inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-6) in activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, compared to healthy-women-derived IgGs. Importantly, behavioral studies conducted following intracerebroventricular injection of IgGs derived from symptomatic women with SBIs (who have dysregulated circulating level of IgG autoantibodies directed against autonomic nervous system receptors) into mice brains demonstrated a specific and transient significant increment (about 60%) in the time spent at the center of the open field arena compared with mice injected with IgG from healthy women (without SBIs). This effect was accompanied with a strong trend of reduction of the locomotor activity of the SBI-IgG treated mice, indicating an overall apathic-like behavior. Our study is the first to show the potential pathogenic activity of IgG autoantibodies in symptomatic women with SBIs, emphasizing the importance of these antibodies in SBI-related illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence indicates that depression is more common in people who partake in a pro-inflammatory diet. The objective of our study was to assess the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and depression through a cross-sectional study of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2018. METHODS We used weighted multivariable logistic regression models with subgroup analysis to explore the relationship between DII and depression. Generalized additive models were used to test whether there was a nonlinear association. Then, we constructed a two-piece linear regression model and performed a recursive algorithm to calculate the inflection point. RESULTS The study enrolled a total of 30,627 individuals from the United States. In the regression model with full confounding variables adjusted, the OR (95 % CI) for the association between DII and depression was 1.05 (1.04, 1.06). A J-shaped association was found between DII and depression, with a turning point of 2.74. After the turning point, the OR (95 % CI) was 1.60 (1.51, 1.69). Only the interaction in the cardiovascular disease (CVD) analysis was statistically significant. CONCLUSION Our study highlighted a J-shaped association between DII and depression in a nationally representative sample of adults from the United States.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the association between preoperative mental health disorders and postoperative complications, readmissions, and ipsilateral revision procedures among patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR). METHODS A retrospective cohort study from 2010 to 2020 was performed using the PearlDiver database. Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases codes were used to compare patients with and without mental health disorders who underwent arthroscopic RCR. Mental health disorders evaluated in this study include depressive disorder, major depressive disorder, major depressive affective disorder, bipolar disorder, dysthymic disorder, adjustment disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Patients were matched at a 1:1 ratio based on age, sex, Charlson Comorbidity Index, body mass index, and tobacco use. Rates of complications and subsequent surgeries were compared between patients with and without a preoperative diagnosis of a mental health disorder. RESULTS The 1-year preoperative prevalence of a mental health disorder from 2010 to 2020 was 14.6%. After 1:1 matching, patients with a mental health disorder who underwent arthroscopic RCR were nearly twice as likely to undergo a revision procedure (odds ratio 1.94, 95% confidence interval 1.76-2.14, P < .001) and more than twice as likely to experience conversion to shoulder arthroplasty (odds ratio 2.29, 95% confidence interval 1.88-2.80, P < .001) within 2 years of initial arthroscopy when compared with patients without a mental disorder. Patients with a mental disorder also experienced increased risk for 90-day readmission (1.9% vs 0%, P < .001) as well as multiple postoperative medical complications. CONCLUSIONS Patients with pre-existing mental health diagnoses experience increased rates of 90-day postoperative complications and readmissions following arthroscopic RCR. In addition, patients with mental health diagnoses are more likely to undergo revision repair and conversion to shoulder arthroplasty within 2 years of the index procedure. Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this article was to examine the potential effect of juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis (JIAU) on the risk of major depressive and anxiety disorders through Mendelian randomization (MR) study. METHODS Genetic instrumental variables from the largest available genome-wide association study for JIAU, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorder were applied. A set of complementary MR approaches including inverse-variance weighted (IVW) were carried out to verify the estimate association and assess horizontal pleiotropy. RESULTS Our results indicated that genetically driven JIAU did not causally produce changes in major depressive or anxiety disorders (IVW: OR = 1.001, 95% CI = 0.997-1.006, P = 0.581; IVW: OR = 1.006, 95% CI = 0.980-1.033, P = 0.649, respectively). In addition, the risk of JIAU could not be influenced by genetically predicted major depressive or anxiety disorders (IVW: OR = 1.132, 95% CI = 0.914-1.404, P = 0.256; IVW: OR = 1.019, 95% CI = 0.548-1.896, P = 0.953, respectively). Besides, several sensitivity analyses indicated that our MR results were robust and no horizontal pleiotropy was observed (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our MR study does not reveal sufficient evidence to support the causal association of JIAU with the development of major depressive or anxiety disorders in both directions. Further large studies are warranted to validate the undetermined relationship between JIAU and the risk of major depressive or anxiety disorders.

Autoantibodies Against ROS-Human Serum Albumin-A Potent Immunological marker in Depressed Individuals with Smoking History. REV ROMANA MED LAB 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Background: Depression is one of the significant problems in adults that accounts for up to five percent of cases worldwide.
Methods: Volunteers were divided into eight groups, and their serum samples were tested for FBG, carbonyl contents, IFN-γ and TNF-α. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) modified human serum albumin (HSA) (ROSHSA) was used as an antigen and levels of serum autoantibodies were estimated by direct binding and inhibition ELISA in all subjects.
Results: Significant biophysical structural modifications were observed in ROS-HSA with increased carbonyl contents compared to native-HSA (N-HSA). Significantly high levels of carbonyl content (2.68 ± 0.33 nmol/mg protein; p > 0.001) and pro-inflammatory cytokines IFN-γ (7.4 ± 0.61 pg/ml; p > 0.001) and TNF-α (1.47 ± 0.23 pg/ml; p > 0.001) were detected in serum samples from F-D-S. Similarly, a high level of autoantibodies against ROS-HSA was observed in females who were depressed and smokers (F-D-S) group (0.89 ± 0.07; p > 0.001) compared to males who were both depressed and smokers (M-D-S) (0.66 ± 0.049). Furthermore, inhibition ELISA results exhibited high recognition of serum autoantibodies from F-D-S subjects (78.6 ± 5.7 mean maximum percentage inhibition MMPI) compared to M-D-S (58.8 ± 5.2 MMPI) subjects.
Conclusion: Incoherence, long term unchecked chronic psychological stress may cause oxidation of blood proteins, which subsequently result in structural alterations of biomolecules, thus generating new-epitopes, capable of inducing autoantibodies specific for ROS-modified proteins. These autoantibodies may be a potential marker for subjects suffering from depression to understand the state of immune imbalance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND C-reactive protein (CRP) has been shown to predict antidepressant treatment outcomes in several trials, but they were limited to small-sample and strictly-restricted conditions. This study plans to verify if CRP can predict antidepressant efficacy in large samples in the real world. METHODS 918 depressed patients who had tested CRP were included, then were followed up through their outpatient visits or by telephone to obtain information about their medication therapy (SSRIs, SNRIs, MT, NaSSA) and assess efficacy using the Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement scale (CGII). Efficacy was classified as effective and ineffective and CRP was separated into the low CRP group (CRP <1 mg/L, n = 709) and the high CRP group (CRP ≥1 mg/L, n = 209).The efficacy was compared in different groups. RESULTS Using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional regression model to analyze, it was discovered that SNRIs were more effective than SSRIs in treating patients with high CRP(HR = 1.652, p = 0.037,95 % CI:1.031-2.654), and SSRIs were more effective in treating patients with low CRP than those with high CRP (HR = 1.257, p = 0.047,95 % CI:1.003-1.574), while no difference in efficacy between the two groups was found in patients using SNRIs, MT, NaSSA. LIMITATIONS Small amounts of MT and NaSSA were included, and some factors that may affect CRP value have not been controlled. CONCLUSION CRP could predict the efficacy of SSRIs in the real world, depressed patients with high CRP may be more likely to respond poorly to SSRIs.

Abstract
Objective Proinflammatory cytokines mediate anxiety and depression in various ways, such as immunity, inflammation, and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. This study intended to further explore the linkage of common proinflammatory cytokine levels with anxiety and depression in psoriasis patients. Methods Totally, 150 psoriasis patients and 50 healthy controls (HCs) were included; the serum samples were collected, then common proinflammatory cytokines were measured by ELISA. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was assessed. Results HADS‐anxiety (HADS‐A) score, HADS‐depression (HADS‐D) score, TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, IL‐12, IL‐17A, and IL‐23 were all increased in psoriasis patients compared to HCs (all p < 0.05). In psoriasis patients, TNF‐α (p = 0.001), IL‐12 (p = 0.035), and IL‐17A (p < 0.001), but not IL‐1β (p = 0.255), IL‐6 (p = 0.248), and IL‐23 (p = 0.216), were positively linked to HADS‐A score. Meanwhile, TNF‐α (p = 0.007) and IL‐17A (p = 0.007) were enhanced in psoriasis patients with anxiety in contrast to those without anxiety; whereas IL‐1β (p = 0.178), IL‐6 (p = 0.360), IL‐12 (p = 0.239), and IL‐23 (p = 0.450) were not different. TNF‐α (p < 0.001), IL‐1β (p = 0.013), Il‐17A (p < 0.001), and IL‐23 (p = 0.023), but not IL‐6 (p = 0.143) and IL‐12 (p = 0.158), were positively linked to HADS‐D score. Concurrently, TNF‐α (p = 0.015), IL‐17A (p < 0.001), and IL‐23 (p = 0.017) were climbed in psoriasis patients with depression by comparison to those without depression; whereas IL‐1β (p = 0.113), IL‐6 (p = 0.237), IL‐12 (p = 0.660) did not differ. Conclusion TNF‐α, IL‐17A, and IL‐23 increments reflect anabatic anxiety and depression in psoriasis patients, uncovering the potency of proinflammatory cytokines measurement for monitoring or even preventing psoriasis patients' anxiety and depression.

Abstract
Depression is a chronic and prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder; clinical symptoms include excessive sad mood, anhedonia, increased anxiety, disturbed sleep, and cognitive deficits. The exact etiopathogenesis of depression is not well understood. Studies have suggested that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukins (ILs) perform vital roles in the pathogenesis and treatment of depression. Increasing evidence suggests the upregulation of TNF-α and ILs expression in patients with depression. Therefore, biologics like TNF inhibitors (etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab) and IL inhibitors (ustekinumab) have become key compounds in the treatment of depression. Interestingly, treatment with an antidepressant has been found to decrease the TNF-α level and improve depression-like behaviors in several preclinical and clinical studies. In the current article, we have reviewed the recent findings linking TNF-α and the pathogenesis of depression proving TNF-α inhibitors as potential new therapeutic agents. Animal models and clinical studies further support that TNF-α inhibitors are effective in ameliorating depression-like behaviors. Moreover, studies showed that peripheral injection of TNF-α exhibits depressive symptoms. These symptoms have been improved by treatment with TNF-α inhibitors. Hence suggesting TNF-α inhibitors as potential new antidepressants for the management of depressive disorder.

Abstract
Background: Silicone breast implants (SBIs) has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of autoimmune diseases. In the current study, we aimed to explore the potential association between circulating autoantibodies against the autonomic nervous system and cognitive impairment, memory deficit, and depressive symptoms reported by women with SBIs. Methods: ELISA assays were used to quantify anti-adrenergic receptors (α1, α2, β1, β2), anti-muscarinic receptors (M1-M5), anti-endothelin receptor type A, and anti-angiotensin II type 1 receptor titers in the sera of 93 symptomatic female subjects with SBIs and 36 age-matched healthy female controls. Results: A significant difference was detected in the level of autoantibodies against the autonomic nervous system receptors in women with SBIs who reported memory impairment, cognitive impairment, and sleep disturbance as compared with both women with SBIs who did not complain of these symptoms or with healthy individuals without SBIs. Conclusions: Clinical symptoms such as depression, cognitive impairment, and sleep disturbances were found to be associated with dysregulation of the levels of circulating autoantibodies targeting the autonomous nervous system receptors in women with SBIs. These autoantibodies may have diagnostic significance in diseases associated with breast implants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of escitalopram vary markedly among MDD patients, and approximately one-third of patients fail to respond. A poor antidepressant response might be associated with excessively high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, but the impact is not clear. We hypothesized that in adults with major depressive disorder, the peripheral biomarker, CRP, was associated with the response to escitalopram (SSRI). METHODS This was a prospective follow-up study. All 71 patients were treated with escitalopram for 12 weeks. Blood samples were collected at baseline and week 12. Remission was defined as a score of 7 or less on the HAMD-17 scale at week 12. Spearman correlations and multiple linear regressions were used to explore the relationship between continuous CRP levels and the HAMD-17 scores. Logistic regression was used to determine the predictors for remission. The restricted maximum likelihood (REML)-based mixed-effect model for repeated measures (MMRM) was used to examine the change of the HAMD-17 total scores between high and low CRP groups. RESULTS Compared with the high CRP group (≥0.8 mg/l), the low baseline CRP group had a higher remission rate (22.73% vs. 48.89%, χ2 = 4.2, p = 0.0403). Logistic regression revealed that patients with lower CRPs were 3.920 times (95% CI: 1.142, 13.460) more likely to experience remission (p = 0.0300). The multiple linear regression model showed that the HAMD-17 total score reduction (baseline to week 12) was negatively correlated with the baseline CRP level (t = -2.00, p = 0.0494). CONCLUSIONS We observed a predictive role of CRP for remission and symptomatic improvement after escitalopram treatment of MDD patients based on continuous or categorical CRP levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been reported that childhood trauma and inflammation are associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia (SZ), but previous researches were almost aimed at adults. The aim of the present research is to observe the alteration of peripheral interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in adolescents (12-20 years) with MDD and SZ, to investigate the impact of childhood abuse in early-onset MDD and SZ, and to furtherly explore the correlation between childhood maltreatment and plasma IL-6, TNF-α levels. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is applied to obtain the plasma concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α in 55 patients with MDD, 51 patients with SZ and 47 healthy minors. The short form of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF) is used to assess the severity of early trauma. RESULTS Plasma IL-6 and TNF-α levels are significantly elevated in patients with early-onset MDD and SZ compared with healthy subjects (p <0.01), whose results display that the correlation between IL-6 and TNF-α is significantly positive (γ=0.787, p <0.01) in all participants. Compared with the healthy adolescents, patients with MDD and SZ show more serious childhood trauma, and the plasma IL-6, TNF-α concentrations are closely related to childhood maltreatment. CONCLUSIONS Early trauma and peripheral inflammatory response play an important role in the pathophysiology of early-onset MDD or SZ. The current findings provide effective targets for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of major depressive disorder and schizophrenia in adolescents.

Abstract
There is a vital need to understand mechanisms contributing to susceptibility to depression to improve treatments for the 11% of Americans who currently suffer from this debilitating disease. The adaptive immune system, comprising T and B cells, has emerged as a potential contributor to depression, as demonstrated in the context of lymphopenic mice. Overall, patients with depression have reduced circulating T and regulatory B cells, "immunosuppressed" T cells, and alterations in the relative abundance of T cell subtypes. T helper (Th) cells have the capacity to differentiate to various lineages depending on the cytokine environment, antigen stimulation, and costimulation. Regulatory T cells are decreased, and the Th1/Th2 ratio and the Th17 cells are increased in patients with depression. Evidence for changes in each Th lineage has been reported to some extent in patients with depression. However, the evidence is strongest for the association of depression with changes in Th17 cells. Th17 cells produce the inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-17A, and the discovery of Th17 cell involvement in depression evolved from the well established link that IL-6, which is required for Th17 cell differentiation, contributes to the onset, and possibly maintenance, of depression. One intriguing action of Th17 cells is their participation in the gut-brain axis to mediate stress responses. Although the mechanisms of action of Th17 cells in depression remain unclear, neutralization of IL-17A by anti-IL-17A antibodies, blocking stress-induced production, or release of gut Th17 cells represent feasible therapeutic approaches and might provide a new avenue to improve depression symptoms. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Th17 cells appear as a promising therapeutic target for depression, for which efficacious therapeutic options are limited. The use of neutralizing antibodies targeting Th17 cells has provided encouraging results in depressed patients with comorbid autoimmune diseases.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an incapacitating condition characterized by loss of interest, anhedonia and low mood, which affects almost 4% of people worldwide. With rising prevalence, it is considered a public health issue that affects economic productivity and heavily increases health costs alone or as a comorbidity for other pandemic non-communicable diseases (such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, etc.). What is even more noteworthy is the double number of women suffering from MDD compared to men. In fact, this sex-related ratio has been contemplated since men and women have different sexual hormone oscillations, where women meet significant changes depending on the age range and moment of life (menstruation, premenstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, menopause…), which seem to be associated with susceptibility to depressive symptoms. For instance, a decreased estrogen level promotes decreased activation of serotonin transporters. Nevertheless, sexual hormones are not the only triggers that alter neurotransmission of monoamines and other neuropeptides. Actually, different dietary habits and/or nutritional requirements for specific moments of life severely affect MDD pathophysiology in women. In this context, the present review aims to descriptively collect information regarding the role of malnutrition in MDD onset and course, focusing on female patient and especially macro- and micronutrient deficiencies (amino acids, ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3 PUFAs), folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, minerals…), besides providing evidence for future nutritional intervention programs with a sex-gender perspective that hopefully improves mental health and quality of life in women.

Background
Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has been reported to directly bind with 5-HT2B receptor (5-HT2BR), but the precise mechanisms, whereby fluoxetine confers the anti-depressive actions via 5-HT2BR is not fully understood. Although neuroinflammation-induced A1 astrocytes are involved in neurodegenerative diseases, the role of A1 astrocyte in the pathogenesis and treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear.
Methods
Mice were subjected to chronic mild stress (CMS) for 6 weeks and subsequently treated with fluoxetine for 4 weeks. The depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors and the activation of A1 reactive astrocyte in hippocampus and cortex of mice were measured. Primary astrocytes were stimulated with A1 cocktail (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1α and C1q), activated (LPS) microglia-conditioned medium (MCM) or IL-6 for 24 h and the expression of A1-special and A2-special markers were determined using RT-qPCR and western blot. The role of 5-HT2BR in the effects of fluoxetine on A1 reactive astrocyte was measured using 5-HT2BR inhibitor and siRNA in vitro and AAVs in vivo. The functions of downstream signaling Gq protein and β-arrestins in the effects of fluoxetine on the activation of A1 astrocyte were determined using pharmacological inhibitor and genetic knockout, respectively.
Results
In this study, we found that fluoxetine inhibited the activation of A1 reactive astrocyte and reduced the abnormal behaviors in CMS mice, as well as ameliorated A1 astrocyte reactivity under three different stimulators in primary astrocytes. We also showed that astrocytic 5-HT2BR was required in the inhibitory effects of fluoxetine on A1 reactive astrocyte in MDD in vivo and in vitro. We further found that the functions of fluoxetine in the activation of A1 astrocyte were independent of either Gq protein or β-arrestin1 in vitro. β-arrestin2 pathway was the downstream signaling of astrocytic 5-HT2BR mediated the inhibitory effects of fluoxetine on A1 astrocyte reactivity in primary astrocytes and CMS mice, as well as the improved roles of fluoxetine in behavioral impairments of CMS mice.
Conclusions
These data demonstrate that fluoxetine restricts reactive A1 astrocyte via astrocytic 5-HT2BR/β-arrestin2 pathway in a mouse model of MDD and provide a novel therapeutic avenue for MDD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mental illness is a well-known risk factor for injury and injury recidivism. The impact of pre-existing psychiatric illness on trauma outcomes, however, has received less attention. Our study examines the relationship of pre-existing psychiatric illness on trauma outcomes including length of stay, cost, and mortality. METHODS Patient data were obtained from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's State Inpatient Database. All patients admitted for trauma in the Detroit metropolitan area from 1/1/2006 to 12/31/2014 were included. The relationship between individual psychiatric comorbidities (depression, psychosis, and other neurological disorders) and outcomes were evaluated with logistic regression (mortality) and generalized linear modeling (length of stay and cost). RESULTS Over 260,000 records were reviewed. Approximately one-third (29.9%) of patients had one or more psychiatric diagnoses. Patients with depression had longer hospital stays (RR = 1.12, p < 0.001) and higher costs (RR = 1.07, p < 0.001), but also lower mortality (OR = 0.69, p < 0.001). Patients with psychosis had longer stays (RR = 1.18, p < 0.001), higher costs (RR = 1.02, p = 0.002), and lower mortality (OR = 0.61, p < 0.001). Patients with other neurological comorbidities had higher mortality (OR = 1.23, p < 0.001), longer stays (RR = 1.29, p < 0.001), and higher costs (RR = 1.10, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Patients with a psychiatric disorder required longer care and incurred greater costs, whereas mortality was higher for only those with a neurological disorder. Identifying patients' psychiatric comorbidities at the time of admission for trauma may help optimize treatment. Addressing these conditions may help reduce the cost of trauma care.

Abstract
The 3-[(4-methoxyphenyl)selanyl]-2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a] pyridine (MPI), a novel organic selenium compound, has been receiving increased attention due to its antioxidant effects and its ability to protect against depression-like behaviours. However, it remains elusive whether MPI is able to reverse depressive-like symptoms and biochemical alterations in mice. In the present work, we explored the ability of MPI (10 mg/kg, i.g.) to reverse inflammation- and stress-induced depression-like behaviours in mice injected with tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α) or submitted to acute restraint stress. Depression-like behaviours were evaluated by the tail suspension and splash test and the open field test was used to evaluate the locomotor activity of mice. The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of mice were used for the evaluation of parameters of oxidonitrosative stress. Here, we showed that a single administration of MPI abolished the depressive-like behaviours induced by TNF-α and acute restraint stress without having an effect per se. The oxidative and nitrosative stress presented in mice with depression-like behaviours were also decreased by MPI in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Our findings suggest that MPI presents antidepressant-like activity which is associated with the biochemical regulation of oxidative stress in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of mice, arising as a promising strategy for the management of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Only 30% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) reach full recovery or remission. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is MDD that does not respond to adequate treatment attempts with at least two antidepressants. TRD is associated more with immune activation than with treatment responsive depression. The current retrospective population-based cross-sectional study, utilizing data from a large nation-wide health maintenance organization in Israel which provides services to estimated 725,000 members, aimed to assess the clinical signs and laboratory markers of autoimmune comorbidity and low-grade inflammation, in patients with TRD. Included were participants aged 18-70 years, diagnosed twice within one year with ICD-9-CM MDD and two control groups, MDD responders (MDD-r) consisting of people with MDD and no TRD and a non-MDD group that included people with no MDD or TRD. The case (570 subjects in TRD group) to control ratio in both control groups (2850 subjects in MDD-r and 2850 subjects in non-MDD control group) was 1:5. Compared to MDD-r, the overall proportion of allergic diseases was higher among the TRD than among the MDD-r [OR 1.52 (1.19-1.94); p < 0.001]. Any systemic autoimmune disease was associated with increased likelihood of MDD-r [OR 1.52 (1.04-2.24); p = 0.03] or TRD [OR 2.22 (1.30-3.78); p = 0.003]. Higher rates of positive (>1:80) antinuclear antibodies [33 (5.79%)] were found among the TRD than among the MDD-r [98 (3.44%); p = 0.011). More allergy and autoimmune comorbidities and presence of low-grade inflammation biomarkers, were found mainly in TRD.

Olfactory impairment in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome and its correlation with organ involvement and immunological abnormalities. Arthritis Res Ther 2021; 23:250. Abstract
Objective Patients with autoimmune diseases often present with olfactory impairment. The aim of the study was to assess the olfactory functions of patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome and to correlate these findings with their disease activity. Methods Fifty-two patients with primary SS and 52 sex- and age-matched healthy control subjects were included. All of them underwent clinical and laboratory examination. Olfactory functions were evaluated using olfactory function assessment by computerized testing including the three stages of smell: threshold, identification, and memory of the different odors. Results All the olfactory scores (olfactory threshold, identification, and memory) in patients with pSS were significantly decreased than the control group (all P < 0.01). Patients had higher proportion of anosmia (13.5% vs 0%) and hyposmia (19.2% vs 11.5%) than controls (χ2 = 10.526, P < 0.01). Multivariable regression analysis revealed that ESSDAI and the symptoms of dryness, fatigue, and limb pain had negative influence on olfactory function (adjusted R2 = 0.381, 0.387, 0.513, and 0.614, respectively). ESSPRI showed significantly negative association with olfactory threshold, identification, memory, and total scores. Olfactory identification and memory scores were decreased in pSS patients with thyroid dysfunction or hypocomplementemia (P < 0.05). Smell threshold scores were decreased in pSS patients with anti-SSA antibody or anti-nuclear antibody compared with those without those autoantibodies (P < 0.01). Conclusion Our findings indicate that olfactory functions are impaired in pSS patients. There was a close correlation between olfactory dysfunction and disease severity and immunological abnormalities. Immune and systemic inflammation dysregulation might play a role in the mechanism of this defect. Abstract
Background: Depression and related psychiatric diagnoses are common in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). The effects of depression on postoperative complications, readmissions, and additional ipsilateral hip surgery are not well studied. Hypothesis: Patients with preoperative depression who undergo hip arthroscopy for FAIS would experience higher rates of 90-day postoperative complications and readmissions, with an increased risk of additional ipsilateral hip procedures, as compared with patients without depression. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A retrospective cohort study between 2010 and 2019 was performed using the Mariner/PearlDiver database. Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases codes were used to compare patients with and without preexisting depression who underwent hip arthroscopy for FAIS. Patients were matched at a 1:1 ratio based on age, sex, Charlson Comorbidity Index, body mass index, and tobacco use. Patients undergoing shoulder or knee arthroscopy were also identified to compare lifetime preoperative depression prevalence amongst groups. Results: The lifetime preoperative depression prevalence was significantly higher in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy as compared with patients undergoing shoulder or knee arthroscopy (25.4% vs 22.2% vs 19.8%; P < .001). When compared with the patients without depression, patients with preoperative depression had higher rates of 90-day readmissions (2.4% vs 1.5%) and complications, including urinary tract infection (36.2% vs 28.9%), pneumonia (12.9% vs 9.1%), hematoma formation (3.1% vs 1.9%), acute kidney injury (4.0% vs 2.6%), deep venous thrombosis/pulmonary embolism (2.6% vs 1.7%), and superficial infection (4.9% vs 2.8%; P < .01 for all comparisons). Preoperative depression was associated with significantly higher odds of undergoing revision hip arthroscopy within 2 years (6.3% vs 2.4%; P < .001). Conclusion: Patients with preexisting depression experienced higher rates of 90-day postoperative complications and hospital readmissions after elective hip arthroscopy for FAIS and were more likely to undergo revision hip arthroscopy within 2 years of the index procedure.

Abstract
Thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) is prevalent in women of live-birthing age and has independently been associated with complications of fertility and pregnancy, in the case of spontaneous conception or after assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment. However, it remains challenging to identify causation between infertility and TAI, even interventional trials looking at the impact of levothyroxine (LT4) treatment on fertility and pregnancy outcomes due to differences among study results which related to small scales, impropriate study designs, enrollment criteria of infertility cause and titer/hormone concentration measurements. Furthermore, many questions remain unsettled in ART management in AITD infertile women attempt pregnancy. Therefore, further observational and interventional trials are needed more comprehensive multiple-center, double blinded, and randomized.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) is an adverse side effect of cancer treatment with increasing awareness. Hippocampal damage and related neurocognitive impairment may mediate the development of CICI, in which altered neurogenesis may play a role. In addition, increased inflammation may be related to chemotherapy-induced hippocampal damage. Memantine, an uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that may enhance neurogenesis and modulate inflammation, may be useful for treating CICI. To test this hypothesis, paclitaxel was administered to eight-week-old male B6 mice to demonstrate the relationship between CICI and impaired neurogenesis, and then, we evaluated the impact of different memantine regimens on neurogenesis and inflammation in this CICI model. The results demonstrated that both the pretreatment and cotreatment regimens with memantine successfully reversed impaired neurogenesis and spatial memory impairment in behavior tests. The pretreatment regimen unsuccessfully inhibited the expression of peripheral and central TNF-α and IL-1β and did not improve the mood alterations following paclitaxel treatment. However, the cotreatment regimen led to a better modulatory effect on inflammation and restoration of mood disturbance. In conclusion, this study illustrated that impaired neurogenesis is one of the mechanisms of paclitaxel-induced CICI. Memantine may serve as a potential treatment for paclitaxel-induced CICI, but different treatment strategies may lead to variations in the treatment efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several lines of evidence suggest alterations in both hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis and dopamine (DA) function in depressed patients. However, the functional relationships between HPT and DA systems have not been well defined. METHODS We examined thyrotropin (TSH) response to 0800 h and 2300 h protirelin (TRH) challenges, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol and growth hormone (GH) responses to apomorphine (APO, a DA receptor agonist), in 58 drug-free DSM-IV major depressed inpatients without a suicidal behavior, and 22 healthy hospitalized controls. RESULTS Compared with controls, patients showed 1) lower basal serum 2300 h-TSH, 2300 h-∆TSH, and ∆∆TSH (difference between 2300 h-∆TSH and 0800 h-∆TSH) levels, and 2) lower cortisol response to APO (∆COR). A negative relationship between ∆∆TSH values and hormonal responses to APO was observed in the depressed group, but not in the control group. When patients were classified on the basis of their ∆∆TSH status, patients with reduced ∆∆TSH values (< 2.5 mU/L) showed hormonal APO responses comparable to those of controls. Patients with normal ∆∆TSH values exhibited lower ∆ACTH, ∆COR, and ∆GH values than patients with reduced ∆∆TSH values and controls. CONCLUSION Taken together, these results suggest that hypothalamic DA function is unaltered in depressed patients with HPT dysregulation (i.e., increased hypothalamic TRH drive leading to altered TRH receptor chronesthesy on pituitary thyrotrophs). Conversely, hypothalamic DA-receptor function is decreased in patients with normal HPT axis activity. These findings are discussed in the context of the role of TRH as a homeostatic neuromodulator in depression.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous disease affecting one out of five individuals and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Presently, MDD is considered a multifactorial disease with various causes such as genetic susceptibility, stress, and other pathological processes. Multiple studies allowed the formulation of several theories attempting to describe the development of MDD. However, none of these hypotheses are comprehensive because none of them can explain all cases, mechanisms, and symptoms of MDD. Nevertheless, all of these theories share some common pathways, which lead us to believe that these hypotheses depict several pieces of the same big puzzle. Therefore, in this review, we provide a brief description of these theories and their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to highlight the common mechanisms and relationships of all major theories of depression and combine them together to present the current overall picture. The analysis of all hypotheses suggests that there is interdependence between all the brain structures and various substances involved in the pathogenesis of MDD, which could be not entirely universal, but can affect all of the brain regions, to one degree or another, depending on the triggering factor, which, in turn, could explain the different subtypes of MDD.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia. Diabetic patients are known to have a higher prevalence and a higher risk of depression compared with the general population. The pathogenesis of diabetes-related depression is unclear, and the treatment is not well-established. Therefore, the prevention of diabetes-related depression is important for improving the quality of life of diabetic patients. Minocycline, a second-generation tetracycline antibiotic, has recently gained attention as a new agent for depression. In this study, we investigated the effect of minocycline on diabetes-related depression in a streptozotocin-induced mouse model of diabetes. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were injected with streptozotocin (200 mg/kg, i.p.). Seven days after injection, the mice received minocycline treatment through drinking water. We compared these mice with vehicle-treated control mice and diabetic mice not receiving minocycline treatment. On day 34, depression-like behavior was investigated using the forced swim test. On the following day, brain samples were collected, and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens were prepared for immunohistochemistry. Compared with the control group, the diabetic mice not receiving minocycline treatment showed a prolonged duration of immobility in the forced swim test, the observation being interpreted as a depression-like behavior. Immunohistochemistry revealed an increase in microglia with an activated morphology in the diabetic mice without minocycline treatment. The expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha in microglia was increased. In addition, a decrease in the number of doublecortin-positive immature neurons was found in the hippocampus of diabetic mice. Minocycline treatment of diabetic animals prevented the depression-like behavior and microglial activation; however, minocycline did not reverse impaired hippocampal neurogenesis. These results indicate that minocycline has a preventive effect on diabetes-related depression. Inhibition of microglial activation would be a critical target for the antidepressant mechanism of minocycline. Impaired hippocampal neurogenesis was observed in diabetic mice; however, this may not be involved in the pathogenesis of depression.

Abstract
Tetragonia tetragonioides, which is a halophyte and grows widely in Asian-Pacific regions, has been used for the treatment of digestive disorders in traditional oriental medicine. This study examined the potential antidepressant effect of Tetragonia tetragonioides in an astroglial degeneration model of depression, which was established based on the postmortem study of depressive patients' brain presenting diminished astrocytes in the prefrontal cortex. C57BL/6 male mice were exposed to glial ablation in the prefrontal cortex by the administration of the gliotoxin, L-alpha-aminoadipic acid (L-AAA) to induce depression. Tetragonia tetragonioides at doses of 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg, imipramine at a dose of 15 mg/kg, and distilled water were orally administrated to mice for 18 days. Behavioral tests including the open field test (OFT), sucrose preference test (SPT), forced swimming test (FST), and tail suspension test (TST) were carried out after 2 days of L-AAA injection. The expression levels of GFAP and NeuN in the prefrontal cortex were determined by immunohistochemistry. Mice subjected to glial ablation in the prefrontal cortex displayed decreased sucrose consumption in SPT and increased immobility time in FST and TST. Treatment with imipramine and Tetragonia tetragonioides remarkably ameliorated the behavioral despair induced by L-AAA. In addition, immunohistochemistry analysis showed that treatment with Tetragonia tetragonioides significantly restored the glial loss as indicated by the elevated GFAP expression level. These findings suggest that Tetragonia tetragonioides exerts an antidepressant effect through the restoration of glial loss under conditions of depression and can be a candidate for an antidepressant agent.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD), which is highly associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has complex pathogenic mechanisms. However, a limited number of studies have evaluated the mutual pathomechanisms involved in MDD and NAFLD development. Chronic stress-mediated elevations in glucocorticoid (GC) levels play an important role in the development of MDD-related NAFLD. Elevated GC levels can induce the release of inflammatory factors and changes in gut permeability. Elevated levels of inflammatory factors activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which further increases the release of GC. At the same time, changes in gut permeability promote the release of inflammatory factors, which results in a vicious circle among the three, causing disease outbreaks. Even though the specific role of the thyroid hormone (TH) in this pathogenesis has not been fully established, it is highly correlated with MDD and NAFLD. Therefore, changing lifestyles and reducing psychological stress levels are necessary measures for preventing MDD-related NAFLD. Among them, GC inhibitors and receptor antagonists may be key in the alleviation of early and mid-term disease progression. However, combination medications may be important in late-stage diseases, but they are associated with various side effects. Traditional Chinese medicines have been shown to be potential therapeutic alternatives for such complex diseases.

Abstract
Depression is a common global mental disorder that seriously harms human physical and mental health. With the development of society, the increase of pressure and the role of various other factors make the incidence of depression increase year by year. However, there is a lack of drugs that have a fast onset, significant effects, and few side effects. Some volatile oils from traditional natural herbal medicines are usually used to relieve depression and calm emotions, such as Lavender essential oil and Acorus tatarinowii essential oil. It was reported that these volatile oils, are easy to enter the brain through the blood-brain barrier and have good antidepressant effects with little toxicity and side effects. In this review, we summarized the classification of depression, and listed the history of using volatile oils to fight depression in some countries. Importantly, we summarized the anti-depressant natural volatile oils and their monomers from herbal medicine, discussed the anti-depressive mechanisms of the volatile oils from natural medicine. The volatile oils of natural medicine and antidepressant drugs were compared and analyzed, and the application of volatile oils was explained from the clinical use and administration routes. This review would be helpful for the development of potential anti-depressant medicine and provide new alternative treatments for depressive disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in breast cancer patients. These symptoms can contribute to lower treatment adherence, increased healthcare charges, and higher mortality rates. Growing evidence suggests that genetic variations may be associated with depressive symptom susceptibility. OBJECTIVE To comprehensively review current findings on the association of genetic variations with depressive symptoms in breast cancer patients. METHODS A literature search was conducted using keywords such as gene variation, single-nucleotide polymorphism, depression/depressive symptoms, and breast cancer. Four hundred articles were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO, yielding 9 full-text, data-based articles. The study quality was assessed using the STrengthening the REporting of Genetic Association studies guideline. RESULTS Genetic polymorphisms in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), interferon γ receptor 1 (IFNGR1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFA), and IL-1B were found to be associated with depressive symptoms among breast cancer patients. The role of serotonin transporter gene linked promotor region (5-HTTLPR) functional polymorphisms on depressive symptoms was inconclusive. The overall quality of reporting results and methods was medium. CONCLUSIONS This is the first review of genetic variations related to differences in levels of depressive symptoms among breast cancer patients. Genetic polymorphisms in inflammatory, neuronal system, and signal transduction pathways can influence the susceptibility. However, more research regarding this topic is needed to further clarify genetic risk factors. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Healthcare providers may determine patients at higher risk of developing depression and symptom outcomes if genetic biomarkers with good sensitivity/specificity are provided. This knowledge can potentially help the development of personalized treatment and decision making for those patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Moderate aerobic exercise training accelerates the resolution of lung fibrosis in a model of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis. However, whether it can inhibit the development of lung fibrosis is unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS C57Bl/6 mice were distributed into four groups: Control (Co), Exercise (Exe), Bleomycin (Bleo), and Bleomycin+Exercise (Bleo+Exe). A single bleomycin dose (1.5 UI/kg) was administered orotracheally and treadmill exercise started in the same day, enduring for 4 weeks, 5x/week, 60 minutes/session, at moderate intensity. Lung mechanics, systemic and pulmonary inflammation, and lung remodeling were evaluated. Lung homogenates were used to evaluate the antioxidant status. RESULTS Total cells, macrophages, lymphocytes, and neutrophils numbers, in agreement with IL-6 levels, were higher in the BAL and serum of Bleo group, compared to other groups. In addition, lung levels of LTB4 in Bleo were higher than other groups, whereas SOD activity and nitric oxide levels in exercised groups (Exe and Exe+Bleo) compared to the Bleo group. Lung GPX activity was lower in Bleo and Exe+Bleo groups compared to others. Exe and Exe+Bleo groups also showed higher IL-10 expression by lung macrophages than other groups, whereas TGF-β expression was higher in Exe, Bleo, and Exe+Bleo groups compared to control. CCR7 expression was induced only in the Exe group. However, exercise did not improve lung remodeling and mechanics, or serum and pulmonary levels of VEGF, IGF-1, and TGF-β. CONCLUSION Aerobic exercise training initiated concomitantly with induction of pulmonary fibrosis reduces lung and systemic inflammation but fails to inhibit lung fibrosis and mechanics impairment.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder affects ~20% of the world population and is characterized by strong sexual dimorphism with females being two to three times more likely to develop this disorder. Previously, we demonstrated that a combination therapy with dihydrocaffeic acid and malvidin-glucoside to synergistically target peripheral inflammation and stress-induced synaptic maladaptation in the brain was effective in alleviating chronic social defeat stress (CSDS)-induced depression-like phenotype in male mice. Here, we test the combination therapy in a female CSDS model for depression and compared sex-specific responses to stress in the periphery and the central nervous system. Similar to male mice, the combination treatment is also effective in promoting resilience against the CSDS-induced depression-like behavior in female mice. However, there are sex-specific differences in peripheral immune responses and differential gene regulation in the prefrontal cortex to chronic stress and to the treatment. These data indicate that while therapeutic approaches to combat stress-related disorders may be effective in both sexes, the mechanisms underlying these effects differ, emphasizing the need for inclusion of both sexes in preclinical studies using animal models.

OBJECTIVE Several lines of evidence support a relationship between circadian rhythms disruption in the onset, course, and maintenance of mental disorders. In this review, we aimed to synthesize the literature investigating chronobiologic theories and their associations with psychiatric entities. METHODS The Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, and Scopus databases were comprehensively and systematically searched and articles published between January 1990 and October 2019 were reviewed. Different combinations of the relevant keywords were polled. We first introduced molecular elements and mechanisms of the circadian system to promote a better understanding of the chronobiologic implications of mental disorders. Then, we comprehensively and systematically reviewed circadian system studies in mood disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. RESULTS Although subject characteristics and study designs vary across studies, current research has demonstrated that circadian pathologies, including genetic and neurohumoral alterations, represent the neural substrates of the pathophysiology of many psychiatric disorders. Impaired HPA-axis function-related glucocorticoid rhythm and disrupted melatonin homeostasis have been prominently demonstrated in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, while alterations of molecular expressions of circadian rhythm genes including CLOCK, PER, and CRY have been reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of mood disorders. CONCLUSION Further translational work is needed to identify the causal relationship between circadian physiology abnormalities and mental disorders and related psychopathology, and to develop sound pharmacologic interventions.

Abstract
Lignanamides are natural plant secondary metabolites derived from oxidative coupling mechanism with hydroxycinnamic acid amides as intermediates. These compounds display powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-hyperlipidemic capacities in vitro, cell culture and in vivo studies. With strong potential to be utilized as protective agents against human chronic diseases, these compounds have attracted the interest of researchers. This review aims to discuss current understanding on the sources, classification, biosynthesis of lignanamides in plants, and importantly their biological activity and potential health benefits. The general biosynthesis pathway for lignanamides is comprehensively summarized, though some details in molecular regulation of the coupling process have yet to be elucidated. Lignanamides deserves additional clinical studies involving animal and human subjects, to prove its health benefits.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to systematically investigate whether, and to what extent, the detection of thyroid autoimmunity during pregnancy and in the weeks after childbirth is associated with an increased risk of developing post-partum depression (PPD), a condition associated with possible adverse outcomes for both mother and offspring. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies, assessing the incidence of PPD in women with and without anti-thyroperoxidase antibody (TPOAb) positivity. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL. Methodological quality of the studies was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. In the presence of even modest between-studies heterogeneity, assessed by Cochrane Q and I2 tests, risk ratios (RRs) for PPD were combined using a random effects model. Funnel plot and trim-and-fill analysis were used to assess publication bias. RESULTS Five included studies provided information on 449 women with TPOAb-positive and 2483 TPOAb-negative women. Pooled RR indicated a significantly increased risk to develop PPD in TPOAb-positive group (RR 1.49, 95% CI 1.11-2.00; P = 0.008; I2 = 47%, Pfor heterogeneity = 0.11). Consistent with a possible publication bias, the trim-and-fill test detected two putative missing studies in the funnel plot. Nevertheless, the adjustment for publication bias produced a negligible effect on the pooled estimate (adjusted RR 1.41, 95% CI 1.18-1.68, P = 0.0002). CONCLUSIONS Thyroid autoimmunity during pregnancy and in the weeks after childbirth is associated with an increased risk of developing PPD. Further well-designed studies are warranted to confirm this association and elucidate underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. PROSPERO REGISTRATION CRD42019129643.
