Abstract
Solid-state fermentation (SSF) and extrusion are effective methods to improve the nutritional and sensory quality of rice bran. The effect of the processing sequence of SSF and extrusion and microbial strains on the quality of rice bran was studied. The results showed that the first SSF followed by extrusion increased the contents of phenolic, flavonoid and γ-oryzanol, but the color changed to brown. The first extrusion followed by SSF caused damage to bioactive components and antioxidant activity, but significantly increased the content of arabinoxylans. The difference between the two processing sequences may be related to the process time and the effect of substrate on microbial induction. Aspergillus oryzae and Neurospora sitophila were suitable for increasing the bioactive components of rice bran, while Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was suitable for increasing water-extractable arabinoxylan content. Different processing sequences and microbial strains have their advantages, and these results can provide reference for rice bran processing.

Abstract
Gamma-oryzanol (ORY), found in rice (Oryza sativa L.), is a mixture of ferulic acid esters with triterpene alcohols, well-known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Our past research demonstrated its positive impact on cognitive function in adult mice, influencing synaptic plasticity and neuroprotection. In this study, we explored whether ORY can exert neuro-differentiating effects by using different experimental models. For this purpose, chemical characterization identified four components that are most abundant in ORY. In human neuroblastoma cells, we showed ORY's ability to stimulate neurite outgrowth, upregulating the expression of GAP43, BDNF, and TrkB genes. In addition, ORY was found to guide adult mouse hippocampal neural progenitor cells (NPCs) toward a neuronal commitment. Microinjection of ORY in zebrafish Tg (-3.1 neurog1:GFP) amplified neurog1-GFP signal, islet1, and bdnf mRNA levels. Zebrafish nrf2a and nrf2b morphants (MOs) were utilized to assess ORY effects in the presence or absence of Nrf2. Notably, ORY's ability to activate bdnf was nullified in nrf2a-MO and nrf2b-MO. Furthermore, computational analysis suggested ORY's single components have different affinities for the Keap1-Kelch domain. In conclusion, although more in-depth studies are needed, our findings position ORY as a potential source of bioactive molecules with neuro-differentiating potential involving the Nrf2 pathway.

Abstract
Rice bran, recognized for its rich lipids and health-beneficial bioactive compounds, holds considerable promise in applications such as rice bran oil production. However, its susceptibility to lipid hydrolysis and oxidation during storage presents a significant challenge. In response, we conducted an in-depth metabolic profiling of rice bran over a storage period of 14 days. We focused on the identification of bioactive compounds and functional lipid species (25 acylglycerols and 53 phospholipids), closely tracking their dynamic changes over time. Our findings revealed significant reductions in these lipid molecular species, highlighting the impact of rancidity processes. Furthermore, we identified 19 characteristic lipid markers and elucidated that phospholipid and glycerolipid metabolism were key metabolic pathways involved. By shedding light on the mechanisms driving lipid degradation in stored rice bran, our study significantly advanced the understanding of lipid stability. These information provided valuable insights for countering rancidity and optimizing rice bran preservation strategies.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Rice (Oryza sativa L.), a staple food for a significant portion of the global population, has been recognized for its traditional medicinal properties for centuries. Rice bran, a by-product of rice milling, contains many bioactive compounds with potential pharmaceutical and therapeutic benefits. In recent years, research has highlighted the anti-inflammatory potential of rice bran, contributed by the bioactive components concentrated in their bran but, unfortunately, entrapped in the bran matrix, with limited bioavailability. Previous studies have reported that the enzymatic treatment of rice bran improves the bran's bioactive compound profile but did not investigate its impact on chronic conditions such as inflammation. AIM OF THE STUDY This study investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of endo-1,4-β-xylanase (ERB) and Viscozyme (VRB) treated red rice bran extracts against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 macrophages in comparison with non-enzyme-treated bran (CRB). Further established their efficacy with known anti-inflammatory compounds-ferulic acid (FA), catechin (CAT), γ-tocopherol (GTP), and γ-oryzanol (ORZ). MATERIALS AND METHODS The RAW 264.7 macrophage cells were pre-treated with non-toxic concentrations (10-200 μg/mL) of FA, CAT, GTP, ORZ, CRB, ERB, and VRB, followed by inflammatory stimulation with LPS for 24 h. Further, the cell supernatant and pellets were harvested to study the anti-inflammatory effects by evaluating and measuring their efficacy in inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, IL-1β) and mediators (ROS, NO, PGE2, COX2, iNOS) through biochemical, ELISA, and mRNA expression studies. RESULTS The findings showed that both ERB and VRB effectively inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-6) and mediators (ROS, NO, PGE2) by downregulating mRNA expressions of inflammatory genes (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, COX2, iNOS) and demonstrated anti-inflammatory efficacy higher than CRB. On comparison, ERB demonstrated exceptional efficacy by causing a reduction of 48% in ROS, 20% in TNF-α, and 23% in PGE2 at 10 μg/mL, surpassing the anti-inflammatory capabilities of all the bioactive compounds, FA and ORZ, respectively. At the same time, VRB exhibited remarkable efficacy by reducing NO production by 52% at 200 μg/mL and IL-6 by 66% at 10 μg/mL, surpassing FA, CAT, ORZ, and GTP. Further, ERB downregulated the mRNA expression of IL-10 and iNOS, while VRB downregulated TNF-α, IL-1β, and COX2 expression. Both extracts equally downregulated IL-6 expression at 10 μg/mL, demonstrating the efficacy more remarkable/on par with established anti-inflammatory compounds. CONCLUSIONS Overall, enzyme-treated rice bran/extract, particularly ERB, possesses excellent anti-inflammatory properties, making them promising agents for alternatives to contemporary nutraceuticals/functional food against inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Various endogenous and exogenous stimuli can result in an inflammatory response and collagen deposition in the liver, which affect liver function and increase the risk of developing liver cirrhosis and cancer. Rice bran, the main by-product of rice milling, contains various nutrients which possess hepatoprotective activities. In this study, we investigated the effects of rice bran on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. Mice were fed a rice-bran-containing diet (10% rice bran w/w) or a standard diet with or without an injection of 20% CCl4 to induce liver fibrosis. Our results showed that feeding a rice-bran-containing diet could alleviate CCl4-induced liver damage, collagen deposition, and expressions of fibrosis-related genes, including α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen 1a2 (COL1A2), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in liver tissues. Moreover, consumption of rice bran enhanced phase II detoxification and antioxidant gene expressions, including Gsta3, Gstp1, Catalase, SOD1, SOD2, and SOD3. Treatment with γ-oryzanol, the major bioactive compound in rice bran, decreased the sensitivity of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to TGF-β1-induced α-SMA, COL1A2, and phosphorylated smad2 expressions. In conclusion, a rice-bran-containing diet may have beneficial effects on liver fibrogenesis through increased antioxidant and detoxification activities. γ-Oryzanol, the major bioactive compound of rice bran, can inhibit activation of HSCs.

Abstract
The incidence of neurodegenerative diseases is increasing exponentially worldwide. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by factors like oxidative stress, gene mutation, mitochondrial dysfunction, neurotoxins, activation of microglial inflammatory mediators, deposition of Lewy's bodies, and α- synuclein proteins in the neurons leading to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra. Hence the development of efficacious neuro-therapy is in demand which can prevent neurodegeneration and protect the nigrostriatal pathway. One of the approaches for managing PD is reducing oxidative stress due to aging and other co-morbid diseased conditions. The phytomolecules are reported as safe and efficacious antioxidants as they contain different secondary metabolites. However, the limitations of low solubility restricted permeability through the blood-brain barrier, and low bioavailability limits their clinical evaluation and application. This review discusses the therapeutic efficacy of phytomolecules in PD and different nanotechnological approaches to improve their brain permeability.

Abstract
Rice bran, a by-product of rice milling, is abundant in bioactive molecules and is highly recognized for its health-promoting properties, particularly in improving metabolic conditions. Building on this knowledge, we aimed to optimize the extraction conditions to maximize the functional efficacy of rice bran extract (RBE) and further validate its impact on lipid metabolism. We found that the optimized RBE (ORBE) significantly suppressed high-fat diet-induced weight gain, hyperlipidemia, and hepatosteatosis in mouse models. ORBE treatment not only suppressed lipid uptake in vivo, but also reduced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells. Importantly, we discovered that ORBE administration resulted in activation of AMPK and inhibition of STAT3, which are both crucial players in lipid metabolism in the liver. Collectively, ORBE potentially offers promise as a dietary intervention strategy against hyperlipidemia and hepatosteatosis. This study underlines the value of optimized extraction conditions in enhancing the functional efficacy of rice bran.

Abstract
Heavy ethanol consumption during adolescence has been linked to neuroimmune response dysregulation and cognitive deficits in the developing adolescent brain. During adolescence, the brain is particularly susceptible to the pharmacological effects of ethanol that are induced by acute and chronic bouts of exposure. Numerous preclinical rodent model studies have used different ethanol administration techniques, such as intragastric gavage, self-administration, vapor, intraperitoneal, and free access, and while most models indicated proinflammatory neuroimmune responses in the adolescent brain, there are various factors that appear to influence this observation. This review synthesizes the most recent findings of the effects of adolescent alcohol use on toll-like receptors, cytokines, and chemokines, as well as the activation of astrocytes and microglia with an emphasis on differences associated with the duration of ethanol exposure (acute vs. chronic), the amount of exposure (e.g., dose or blood ethanol concentrations), sex differences, and the timing of the neuroimmune observation (immediate vs. persistent). Finally, this review discusses new therapeutics and interventions that may ameliorate the dysregulation of neuroimmune maladaptations after ethanol exposure.

Abstract
The incidence and prevalence of age-related neurodegenerative dementias have been increasing. There is no curative therapy and conventional drug treatment can cause problems for patients. Medicinal plants traditionally used for problems associated with ageing are emerging as a therapeutic resource. The main aim is to give a proposal for use and future research based on scientific knowledge and tradition. A literature search was conducted in several searchable databases. The keywords used were related to neurodegenerative dementias, ageing and medicinal plants. Boolean operators and filters were used to focus the search. As a result, there is current clinical and preclinical scientific information on 49 species used in traditional medicine for ageing-related problems, including neurodegenerative dementias. There are preclinical and clinical scientific evidences on their properties against protein aggregates in the central nervous system and their effects on neuroinflammation, apoptosis dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, gabaergic, glutamatergic and dopaminergic systems alterations, monoamine oxidase alterations, serotonin depletion and oestrogenic protection. In conclusion, the potential therapeutic effect of the different medicinal plants depends on the type of neurodegenerative dementia and its stage of development, but more clinical and preclinical research is needed to find better, safer and more effective treatments.

Rice-memolin, a novel peptide derived from rice bran, improves cognitive function after oral administration in mice. Sci Rep 2023; 13:2887. Abstract
Many people eat polished rice, while rice bran, a by-product known to be rich in protein and expected to have potential functions for health benefits, has not been effectively utilized. In this study, we determined that orally administered Val-Tyr-Thr-Pro-Gly (VYTPG) derived from rice bran protein improved cognitive decline in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). It was demonstrated that VYTPG was released from model peptides corresponding to fragment sequences of original rice proteins (Os01g0941500, Os01g0872700, and allergenic protein) after treatment with thermolysin, a microorganism-derived enzyme often used in industrial scale processes. The thermolysin digest also improved cognitive decline after oral administration in mice. Because VYTPG (1.0 mg/kg) potently improved cognitive decline and is enzymatically produced from the rice bran, we named it rice-memolin. Next, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the cognitive decline improvement associated with rice-memolin. Methyllycaconitine, an antagonist for α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, suppressed the rice-memolin-induced effect, suggesting that rice-memolin improved cognitive decline coupled to the acetylcholine system. Rice-memolin increased the number of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-positive cells and promoted the mRNA expression of EGF and FGF-2 in the hippocampus, implying that these neurotropic factors play a role in hippocampal neurogenesis after rice-memolin administration. Epidemiologic studies demonstrated that diabetes is a risk factor for dementia; therefore, we also examined the effect of rice-memolin on glucose metabolism. Rice-memolin improved glucose intolerance. In conclusion, we identified a novel rice-derived peptide that can improve cognitive decline. The mechanisms are associated with acetylcholine and hippocampal neurogenesis. Rice-memolin is the first rice-brain-derived peptide able to improve cognitive decline.

Abstract
We investigated the changes in the oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease risk biomarkers, including the activity of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, in older adults with prehypertension following Riceberry rice bran oil supplementation. A total of 35 women aged 60 to 76 years with prehypertension were randomly allocated to two groups, one of which was supplemented with rice bran oil (n=18) and the other with Riceberry rice bran oil (n=17) at 1,000 mg daily for 8 weeks. Prior to and after the supplementation, oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk biomarkers (primary outcomes), heart rate variability, and blood pressure (secondary outcomes) were investigated. Results showed that plasma malondialdehyde, blood glutathione disulfide, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels were significantly decreased, and the ratio of reduced glutathione to glutathione disulfide significantly increased in both groups after supplementation (all P<0.05). No significant differences were observed between groups. Heart rate variability and blood pressure did not statistically significantly change subsequent to supplementation in either group and did not differ between groups. In conclusion, Riceberry rice bran oil supplementation for 8 weeks alleviates oxidative stress and inflammation in older adults with prehypertension to a similar extent as rice bran oil supplementation.

Abstract
Purple rice has gained attention for its health promoting potential due to a high content of bioactive phytochemicals. The heat generated during cooking alters the quality and quantity of nutrients and phytochemicals in food. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical profile and chemopreventive properties of cooked glutinous purple rice using cell-based assays and a rat model. Purple rice was cooked in a rice cooker and was then further extracted with solvents to obtain dichloromethane and methanol extracts. The methanol extracts of glutinous purple rice contained great amounts of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Protocatechuic acid (2.26–5.40 mg/g extract) and cyanidin 3-glucoside (34.3–65.7 mg/g extract) were the major phenolic acid and anthocyanin contents, respectively. After cooking, the content of anthocyanins, γ-oryzanols, and phytosterols decreased, while the amount of some phenolic acid and tocol contents increased. Methanol extracts of glutinous purple rice inhibited reactive oxygen species production about 60% in PMA-treated peripheral blood mononuclear cells, reduced nitric oxide formation in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells (26–39% inhibition), and exhibited antimutagenicity against several mutagens using the Ames test, but dichloromethane extracts presented only mild anti-inflammatory activities. Although methanol extracts induced mild mutagenicity (mutagenic index 2.0–2.5), they did not induce micronucleated hepatocyte formation and certain hepatic CYP450 isozyme activities in rats. However, the mutagenicity of the methanol extract significantly declined after cooking. In summary, the methanol extract of the cooked glutinous purple rice might be a promising cancer chemopreventive fraction, which was neither genotoxic nor posing adverse effects on phytochemical–drug interaction in rats.

Abstract
Adequate therapeutic intervention performed in the case of extradural spinal AVM and an inten-sive recovery program allow the amelioration of neurological manifestations in a very high percentage. With the ultimate goal of practicing a trade, a good biological recovery is needed for social recovery. The effectiveness of strategies for professional integration and reintegration de-pends largely on the patient’s experiences before the onset of the disease. The paper aims to re-view the treatment, the evolution of patients with extradural spinal AV and the possibilities of socio-professional reintegration. Methods and analysis. A case presentation of a patient diag-nosed with extradural spinal AV fistula is proposed, along with a review of the current literature on the treatment of this pathology, the evolution and the possibilities of vocational recovery. The studies will be analysed and selected in two stages, in the first stage the titles and abstracts, in the second stage, the articles with full text will be analysed, selected and a narrative synthesis of the included studies will be made. Summary case. The 51-year-old urban patient, a profes-sional driving instructor who underwent endovascular and surgical treatment for extradural spinal AV fistula, is hospitalized for a moderate motor deficit, such as paraparesis, back pain, mechanical pain in the knees and gait disorders. The objectives of recovery are represented by neuromotor recovery and socio-professional reintegration. Conclusions. Spinal EAVFs are rare lesions with a low risk of bleeding; the clinical manifestations are determined by the compres-sion of the bone marrow; these being significantly improved after the endovascular and surgical treatment. Studies show a good long-term prognosis, which is determined by the absence of re-currences. An essential role in the integration of patients with disabilities in the socio-professional life is the identification of their deficiencies and their reorientation according to the outstanding abilities, the stimulation of the preserved skills.
