Enhanced adsorption of cesium on PVA-alginate encapsulated Prussian blue-graphene oxide hydrogel beads in a fixed-bed column system

Constructing porous ZnFC-PA/PSF composite spheres for highly efficient Cs+ removal

Radioisotope leaking from nuclear waste has become an intractable problem due to its gamma radiation and strong water solubility. In this work, a novel porous ZnFC-PA/PSF composite sphere was fabricated by immobilization of ferrocyanides modified zinc phytate into polysulfone (PSF) substrate for the treatment of Cs-contaminated water. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZnFC-PA/PSF was 305.38 mg/g, and the removal efficiency of Cs+ was reached 94.27% within 2 hr. The ZnFC-PA/PSF presented favorable stability with negligible dissolution loss of Zn2+ and Fe2+ (< 2%). The ZnFC-PA/PSF achieved high-selectivity towards Cs+ (Kd = 2.24×104 mL/g) even in actual geothermal water. The adsorption mechanism was inferred to be the ion-exchange between Cs+ and K+. What's more, ZnFC-PA/PSF worked well in the fixed-bed adsorption (E = 91.92%), indicating the application potential for the hazardous Cs+ removal from wastewater.

Graphene-based nanomaterials for the removal of emerging contaminants of concern from water and their potential adaptation for point-of-use applications

Considering the plethora of work on the exceptional environmental performance of 2D nanomaterials, there is still a missing link in addressing their practical application in point-of-use (POU) water treatment. By reviewing the exceptional environmental performance of 2D nanomaterials with specific emphasis on graphene and its derivatives, this review aims at inspiring further discussions and research in graphene-based POU water treatment with particular focus on the removal of emerging contaminants of concern (ECCs), which is largely missing in the literature. We outlined the prevalence of ECCs in the environment, their health effects both on humans and marine life, and the potential of efficiently removing them from water using three-dimensional graphene-based macrostructures to ensure ease of adsorbent recovery and reuse compared to nanostructures. Given various successful studies showing superior adsorption capacity of graphene nanosheets, we give an account of the recent developments in graphene-based adsorbents. Moreover, several cost-effective materials which can be easily self-assembled with nanosheets to improve their environmental performance and safety for POU water treatment purposes were highlighted. We highlighted the strategy to overcome challenges of adsorbent regeneration and contaminant degradation; and concluded by noting the need for policy makers to act decisively considering the conservative nature of the water treatment industry, and the potential health risks from ingesting ECCs through drinking water. We further justified the need for the development of advanced POU water treatment devices in the face of the growing challenges regarding ECCs in surface water, and the rising cases of drinking water advisories across the world.

Synthesis of Prussian blue-embedded magnetic micro hydrogel for scavenging of cesium from aqueous solutions; Batch and dynamic investigations

A magnetic micro porous structure composite based on alginate and Prussian blue (M-SA-PB) was simply prepared for cesium removal from the aqueous solutions. The gelation and formation of PB proceeded through the same step, which made the PB homogenously distributed and firmly attached to the alginate matrix. The homogenizer was applied to break down the bulky gel structure into micro-ones, and the lyophilizer will provide the porous structure. Batch cesium sorption experiments showed that the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were attributed to the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm. Moreover, the Cs-ion is favorably adsorbed on the M-SA-PB composite surface as a monolayer towards Cs, with a maximum adsorption capacity reach of 191.0 mg/g. Furthermore, the M-SA-PB adsorbent showed excellent adsorption selectivity of Cs from multiple-ion solutions. Our work was extended to use the M-SA-PB composite in dynamic cesium sorption. The column studies showed that the removal efficiency of Cs+ increased with increasing bed depth as well as the initial cesium concentration. Finally, as previously mentioned, the M-SA-PB could be considered an excellent Cs+ scavenger employing both batch and dynamic approaches, which makes it a promising adsorbent for practical investigations.

Performance and cell toxicity studies for the use of graphene oxide-bimetallic oxide hybrids in the absorptive removal of Pb(II) from wastewater: fixed-bed column study with regeneration

The current study involves the removal of Pb(II) ions from an aqueous solution using GO/Mn-Fe hybrids in a fixed bed column study. The capability of the hybrid in the Pb removal was examined using a continuous flow fixed bed column which revealed that the hybrid had the maximum adsorption capacity of 172.768 mg/g at a flow rate of 2 mL/min, bed height of 1 cm, and influent concentration of 200 mg/L. The breakthrough curves obtained from the experiments were examined using three different models, i.e., Bohart-Adams model, Thomas Model, and Yoon-Nelson model, wherein all the models showed high correlation coefficient values. Three consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles in the column yielded regeneration efficiencies of 91.71%, 88.31%, and 85.41%. The column life factor indicated that the fixed bed would have enough capacity to avoid a zero breakthrough time for up to 9 cycles, implying that GO/Mn-Fe could be used as a cheap and efficient adsorbent in the removal of Pb(II) from contaminated water. The adsorption mechanism was postulated based on the characterization of the spent adsorbent by FTIR and SEM. The phenomenon of the adsorption process can be described in accordance with the surface complex formation theory, which suggests that an increase in pH decreases the competition between metal ions and protons, favoring metal ion adsorption. The toxicity of the synthesized hybrid was evaluated on HeLa cells and compared to the toxicity of GO. Increasing the concentration of GO/Mn-Fe hybrid from 50 to 250 g/mL resulted in a decrease in cell viability from 91.90 to 56.52%, whereas increasing the concentration of GO resulted in a decrease in cell viability from 61.59 to 37.19%. The study clearly demonstrates the use of GO/Mn-Fe hybrid as an adsorbent for efficient sequestration of Pb(II) ions with lower environmental toxicity.

Effective triclosan removal by using porous aromatic frameworks in continuous fixed-bed column studies

Triclosan (TCS) has been regarded as an emerging contaminant in aquatic systems, making its efficient removal of great significance. In this study, NPVMo@iPAF-1, with a specific surface area of 665 m2/g, was prepared by incorporating (NH4)5H6PV8Mo4O40 into porous aromatic frameworks (PAF). The maximum adsorption capacity of TCS on NPVMo@iPAF-1 reached 917.1 mg/g, as calculated from the Langmuir model. Fixed-bed columns packed with NPVMo@iPAF-1 were employed for TCS removal; the experiment data strongly correlated with the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models under different operational conditions. Pore preservation, electrostatic effects, and the synergistic effect of π-π interactions contributed to the effective adsorption of TCS onto NPVMo@iPAF-1. The NPVMo@iPAF-1 fixed-bed column could be effectively regenerated through in-situ ozonation for more than 10 regeneration cycles. NPVMo@iPAF-1 turned out to be a promising adsorbent for removing TCS not only from pure water but also from reclaimed water and surface water samples.

Removal of organic micropollutants from water by adsorption on thermo-plasma expanded graphite encapsulated into calcium alginate

Nowadays, public concern is focused on the degradation of water quality. For this reason, the development of innovative technologies for water treatment in view of (micro)pollutant removal is important. Indeed, organic (micro)pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides and plasticizers at concentration levels of μg L-1 or even ng L-1 are hardly removed during conventional wastewater treatment. In view of this, thermo-plasma expanded graphite, a light-weight innovative material in the form of a powder, was encapsulated into calcium alginate to obtain a granular form useful as filtration and adsorption material for removal of different pollutants. The produced material was used to remove atrazine, bisphenol-A, 17-α-ethinylestradiol and carbamazepine (at concentration levels of 125, 250 and 500 µg L-1) by top-down filtration. The effect of flow rate, bed depth and adsorbent composition was evaluated based on breakthrough curves. The experimental data was analysed with the Adams-Bohart model in view of scale-up. Under optimal conditions, removal and adsorption capacity of respectively about 21%, 21%, 38%,42%, 43 µg g-1, 44 µg g-1, 37 µg g-1 and 87 µg g-1 were obtained for atrazine, bisphenol, 17-α ethinylestradiol and carbamazepine when using 0.12 g of thermo-plasma expanded graphite to treat 200 mL at 500 µg L-1 (for each compound) of solution obtaining at contact time of 20 min. The granular form of TPEG obtained (GTPEG) by entrapping in calcium alginate results to have a good adsorbent property for the removal of carbamazepine, atrazine, bisphenol A and 17-α ethinylestradiol from water at concentration levels between 250 and 500 μg L-1. Promising results confirm the adsorbent properties of TPEG and push-up us to investigate on its application and improve of its performance by evaluating different entrapping materials.

Graphene hydrogel improves S. putrefaciens' biological treatment of dye wastewater: Impacts of extracellular electron transfer and function of c-type cytochromes

Biocompatible materials and biocarriers have attracted great attention in biological wastewater treatment owing to their excellent performance in improving pollutant removal. Graphene-based material, a biocarrier candidate, with excellent adsorbability and conductivity was increasingly applied in anaerobic digestion due to its exceptional potential in the adsorption and electron transfer process. Nevertheless, the green approach for the formation of bio-graphene complexes and their mechanism in dye removal is limited. The aim of this study is to investigate and assess the performance of biological graphene hydrogel (BGH) formed by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 on the removal of methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB). The results showed that the formation of BGH is determined by the physicochemical characteristics of graphene oxide, including sheet size, oxidation degree, and interlayer distance. BGHs significantly increased the removal efficiency of dyes in comparison to non-graphene samples, with a 24-h removal rate of MO and MB reaching 92.9% and 91%, respectively. The synergetic mechanism of BGH on the enhanced removal rate of organic dye can be ascribed to GO's ability in accelerating extracellular electron transfer and stimulating biodegradation pathways relating to c-type cytochromes, including MtrA and MtrC. These findings provided an understanding of the relationship between graphene-based nanomaterials and Shewanella, which facilitated their future application in environmental biotechnology.

Hydrogel Applicability for the Industrial Effluent Treatment: A Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis

In recent decades, hydrogels, as adsorption materials, have received important attention due to their characteristics and properties, such as mechanical strength, biocompatibility, biodegradability, swellability, and stimuli sensitivity. In the actual framework of sustainable development, it has been imperative to develop practical studies of hydrogels in the treatment of actual industrial effluents. Accordingly, the current work has, as its objective, to make evident hydrogels' applicability in the treatment of actual industrial effluents. For this purpose, a bibliometric analysis and systematic review based on the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method were conducted. The relevant articles were selected from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Some important findings were that: (1) China is the leading country when it comes to hydrogel application in actual industrial effluents, (2) the motor studies are focalized on the treatment of wastewater by hydrogels, (3) the fixed-bed columns are suitable unit equipment for the treatment of industrial effluents of using hydrogels, and (4) the hydrogels show excellent adsorption capacities of ion and dye contaminants present in industrial effluents. In summary, since the implementation of sustainable development in 2015, the progress of practical hydrogel applications in the treatment of industrial effluent has been receiving more attention, and the selected studies demonstrate the implementation viability of these materials.

Synergistic adsorption and oxidation of trivalent antimony from groundwater using biochar supported magnesium ferrite: Performances and mechanisms

Antimony (Sb) pollution is considered an environmental problem, since Sb is toxic and carcinogenic to humans. Here, a novel biochar supported magnesium ferrite (BC@MF) was adopted for Sb(III) removal from groundwater. The maximum adsorption capacity was 77.44 mg g^-1. Together with characterization, batch experiments, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic analyses suggested that inner-sphere complexation, H-bonding, and electrostatic interactions were the primary mechanisms. C-C/CC, C-O, and O-CO groups and Fe/Mg oxides might have acted as adsorption sites. The adsorbed Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V). The generation of reactive oxygen species, iron redox reaction, and oxidizing functional groups all contributed to Sb(III) oxidation. Furthermore, the fixed-bed column system demonstrated a satisfactory Sb removal performance; BC@MF could treat ∼6060 BV of simulated Sb-polluted groundwater. This research provides a promising approach to sufficiently remove Sb(III) from contaminated groundwater, providing new insights for the development of innovative strategies for heavy metal removal.

Ceramsite made from drinking water treatment residue for water treatment: A critical review in association with typical ceramsite making

The use of ceramsite to construct filtration systems (e.g., biofilters) is a common method for water treatment. To promote such applications, the development of low-cost, high-performance, and environmentally friendly ceramsites has received increasing attention from scientists, and a critical step in the development is the preparation of raw materials. As an inevitable and non-hazardous by-product during potable water production, drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) is typically recycled to make water treatment ceramsite to promote recycling in filtration systems. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap regarding DWTR in making ceramsites for water treatment. The results suggest that the fabrication methods for DWTR-based ceramsite can be generally classified into sintering and non-sintering procedures. For the sintering method, owing to the heterogeneous properties (especially aluminum, iron, and calcium), DWTR has been applied as various sub-ingredients for raw materials preparations. In contrast, for the non-sintering method, DWTR is commonly applied as the main ingredient, and natural curing, physical crosslinking, and thermal treatment methods have been typically adopted to make ceramsite. However, DWTR-based ceramsites tend to have a high adsorption capability and favorable microbial effects to control different kinds of pollution (e.g., phosphorus, nitrogen, and organic matter). Future work is typically recommended to thoroughly evaluate the performance of DWTR-based ceramsite-constructed filtration systems to control water pollution concerning the making procedures, the potential to control pollution, the stability, and the safety of raw DWTR-based ceramsite, providing systematic information to design more proper planning for beneficial recycling.

Multiscale structural control of thiostannate chalcogels with two-dimensional crystalline constituents

Chalcogenide aerogels (chalcogels) are amorphous structures widely known for their lack of localized structural control. This study, however, demonstrates a precise multiscale structural control through a thiostannate motif ([Sn₂S₆]^4-)-transformation-induced self-assembly, yielding Na-Mn-Sn-S, Na-Mg-Sn-S, and Na-Sn(II)-Sn(IV)-S aerogels. The aerogels exhibited [Sn₂S₆]^4-:Mn²⁺ stoichiometric-variation-induced-control of average specific surface areas (95-226 m² g^-1), thiostannate coordination networks (octahedral to tetrahedral), phase crystallinity (crystalline to amorphous), and hierarchical porous structures (micropore-intensive to mixed-pore state). In addition, these chalcogels successfully adopted the structural motifs and ion-exchange principles of two-dimensional layered metal sulfides (K_2xMn_xSn_3-xS₆, KMS-1), featuring a layer-by-layer stacking structure and effective radionuclide (Cs⁺, Sr²⁺)-control functionality. The thiostannate cluster-based gelation principle can be extended to afford Na-Mg-Sn-S and Na-Sn(II)-Sn(IV)-S chalcogels with the same structural features as the Na-Mn-Sn-S chalcogels (NMSCs). The study of NMSCs and their chalcogel family proves that the self-assembly principle of two-dimensional chalcogenide clusters can be used to design unique chalcogels with unprecedented structural hierarchy.

Adaptation of selected models for describing competitive per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances breakthrough curves in groundwater treated by granular activated carbon

Granular activated carbon (GAC) has proven to be a successful technology for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) removal from contaminated drinking water supplies. Proper design of GAC treatment relies upon characterization of media service-life, which can change significantly depending on the PFAS contamination, treatment media, and water quality, and is often determined by fitting descriptive models to breakthrough curves. However, while common descriptive breakthrough models are favored for their ease-of-use, they have a significant shortcoming in that they are not able to properly fit PFAS desorption in competitive sorption scenarios. The present work adapts three common descriptive models to fit competitive PFAS breakthrough curves from a GAC pilot study. The adapted and original models were fit to the experimental breakthrough curves for 12 common PFAS and evaluated using adjusted R² and reduced χ² values. This study found that the novel adaptation of the common descriptive models successfully accounted for desorption of PFAS compounds from the GAC, accurately describing increased exposure risks due to elevated effluent levels during desorption without significantly increasing the complexity of implementing the models.

Poly (vinyl alcohol)-alginate as potential matrix for various applications: A focused review

Advances in polymers have made significant contribution in diverse application oriented fields. Multidisciplinary applicability of polymers generates a range of strategies, which is pertinent in a wide range of fields. Blends of natural and synthetic polymers have spawned a different class of materials with synergistic effects. Specifically, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and alginate (AG) blends (PVAG) have demonstrated some promising results in almost every segment, ranging from biomedical to industrial sector. Combination of PVAG with other materials, immobilization with specific moieties and physical and chemical crosslinking could result in amendments in the structure and properties of the PVAG matrices. Here, we provide an overview of the recent developments in designing PVAG based matrix and complexes with their structural and functional properties. The article also provides a comprehensive outline on the applicability of PVAG matrix in wastewater treatment, biomedical, photocatalysis, food packaging, and fuel cells and sheds light on the challenges that need to be addressed. Finally, the review elaborates the future prospective of PVAG matrices in other unexplored fields like aircraft industry, nuclear science and space exploration.

Artificial neural network (ANN) approach for prediction and modeling of breakthrough curve analysis of fixed-bed adsorption of iron ions from aqueous solution by activated carbon from Limonia acidissima shell

The present research article explored the potential of activated carbon prepared from Limonia acidissima shell to adsorb total Fe ions from aqueous solution in a packed bed up-flow column. The effect of essential factors such as bed height (3–5 cm), initial concentration (30–50 mg/L), and flow rate (3.32–5.4 mL/min) on the performance of the column bed was investigated. The adsorption capacity augmented with an increase in bed height and initial adsorbate concentration but declined with an increase in flow rate. The maximum uptake capacity of 209.6 mg/g was achieved at 5 cm bed height, 3.32 mL/min, and 50 mg/L initial concentration. The bed depth service time (BDST) model was used to analyze the experimental data and determine the characteristic parameters of the packed bed reactor suitable for designing large-scale column studies. The Adams–Bohart, Thomas, and Yoon–Nelson models were applied to the experimental data to predict breakthrough curves using non-linear regression. The artificial neural network (ANN) based model was able to efficaciously predict the column performance using the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm. A comparison between the experimental data and model results contributed to a high degree of correlation, specifying that the preliminary information was in good agreement with the ANN predicted data.

Development of a continuous fixed-bed column to eliminate cadmium(II) ions by starch-g-poly(acrylic acid)/cellulose nanofiber bio-nanocomposite hydrogel

This paper presents an experimental study on continuous adsorptive removal of Cd²⁺ from the water body using a bio-nanocomposite hydrogel within a fixed-bed column (FBC) system. The bio-nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized based on starch grafted poly(acrylic acid) (St-g-PAA) reinforced by cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The effects of processing conditions including pH, flow rate, and initial concentration of Cd²⁺ on adsorption efficiency were examined. Based on the results, the highest removal efficiency was achieved to be 82.5% at pH of 5, initial concentration of 10 mg L^-1, and flow rate of 5 mL min^-1. Furthermore, by applying isotherm models, it was uncovered that the Langmuir isotherm model was the most appropriate one, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 40.65 mg g^-1. Also, an adsorption process was carried out using the FBC system, and the outcome data were processed using Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models to find the characteristics of the column. In this study, the recovering capacity of the exhausted hydrogel was evaluated. Desorption process efficiencies of batch and continuous operations were obtained to be 91.9% and 90%, respectively.

Decontamination of radioactive cesium-contaminated soil/concrete with washing and washing supernatant- critical review

We reviewed washing of radioactive Cs-contaminated concrete and soil based on the fate of Cs in concrete and soil, including sorption materials for treatment of supernatant solution. In non-aged cement materials (the calcium silicate hydration (C-S-H) phase), it was possible to decontaminate Cs using ion exchange with monovalent cations, such as NH₄⁺. The clay components in the soil and aggregates were important factors in optimization of the efficiency and mechanism for Cs decontamination with washing solution. The parameters (reagent component, pH, and temperature) of the washing solution should be determined considering soil mineral type (here, weathered biotite (WB) with vermiculite), since monovalent cations such as NH₄⁺ and K⁺ can inhibit Cs decontamination due to collapse of the hydrated and expanded interlayer regions with cation exchange. In this case, hydrothermal treatment or H₂O₂ dosing was necessary to expand the collapsed interlayer region for Cs removal by washing with cation exchange or organic acids. Acid and a chelating agent significantly enhanced Cs-release with dissolution of the adsorbent layer containing iron and aluminum oxides. The important characteristics of important and emerging sorption materials for treatment of the radioactive Cs-contaminated supernatant after washing treatment are discussed. Sorbents for treatment of washing supernatant are divided in to two main categories. Clay minerals, metal hexacyanoferrates, and ammonium molybdophosphates are discussed in the inorganic class of materials. Hypercrosslinked polymers, supramolecular sorbents, carbon nanotubes, and graphene oxide are covered in the carbon-based sorbents for Cs removal from water.

Oxygen Plasma Technology-Assisted Preparation of Three-Dimensional Reduced Graphene Oxide/Polypyrrole/Strontium Composite Scaffold for Repair of Bone Defects Caused by Osteoporosis

Repairs of bone defects caused by osteoporosis have always relied on bone tissue engineering. However, the preparation of composite tissue engineering scaffolds with a three-dimensional (3D) macroporous structure poses huge challenges in achieving osteoconduction and osteoinduction for repairing bone defects caused by osteoporosis. In the current study, a three-dimensional macroporous (150-300 μm) reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole composite scaffold modified by strontium (Sr) (3D rGO/PPY/Sr) was successfully prepared using the oxygen plasma technology-assisted method, which is simple, safe, and inexpensive. The findings of the MTT assay and AO/EB fluorescence double staining showed that 3D rGO/PPY/Sr has a good biocompatibility and effectively promoted MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation. Furthermore, the ALP assay and alizarin red staining showed that 3D rGO/PPY/Sr increased the expression levels of ALP activity and the formation of calcified nodules. The desirable biocompatibility, osteoconduction, and osteoinduction abilities, assure that the 3D macroporous rGO/PPY/Sr composite scaffold offers promising potential for use in the repair of bone defects caused by osteoporosis in bone tissue engineering.

Removal of PAHs at high concentrations in a soil washing solution containing TX-100 via simultaneous sorption and biodegradation processes by immobilized degrading bacteria in PVA-SA hydrogel beads

Soil washing process enhanced by surfactants is a promising technique in removing organic pollutants from soil. In this work, a simultaneous sorption and biodegradation technique was used to remove 16 PAHs from a soil washing solution (SWS) obtained by rinsing a heavily contaminated soil from a coking plant with Triton X-100 (TX-100). This was done by immobilizing a pyrene-degrading bacterial strain in polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate (PVA-SA) hydrogel beads. Removal performance of free bacteria, blank PVA-SA beads and beads with immobilized degrading bacteria at a low, medium and high initial concentration was evaluated. The recycling and removal performance of the used beads were also examined. Our findings showed that hydrogel beads with immobilized bacteria at a medium concentration can remove around 77% ∑16PAHs from SWS in 96 h. The beads can be recycled and reused to treat a new SWS; 32-55% ∑16PAHs was removed in 24 h. The bead provided protection for bacteria against the co-existing substances such as TX-100. The bacteria-immobilized beads are more efficient and sustainable than free bacteria and blank beads due to simultaneous sorption and biodegradation processes, thus providing a solid reference for possible industrial application of bacteria immobilization technique to deal with SWSs with complex composition.

Removal of diclofenac from aqueous solutions by adsorption on thermo-plasma expanded graphite

The adsorption of diclofenac on thermo-plasma expanded graphite (a commercial product) from water solutions was investigated. The adsorbent material was characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, Raman and X-ray diffraction analyses. Typical diffractogram and Raman spectrum of graphitic material, dimension of 24.02 nm as crystallite dimension and a surface area of 47 m² g^-1 were obtained. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity was evaluated in the range 1-7 and the adsorption mechanism was described by kinetic and isothermal studies. Pseudo-second order and Dubinin-Radushkevich models agreed with theoretical values of adsorption capacity (i.e. 400 and 433 mg g^-1, respectively) and resulted to be the best fit for kinetics and isothermal experimental data. The thermodynamics of the process was evaluated by plotting the adsorption capacity/concentration ratio at the equilibrium as a function of different values of the multiplicative inverse of temperature. Moreover, the adsorbent regeneration was also investigated, comparing two different remediation techniques. Solvent washing performed with NaOH 0.2 M and thermo-treatment carried out by heating in an oven at 105 °C for 2 h and then at 200 °C for 4 h. The thermo-treatment was the best technique to regenerate the adsorbent, ensuring same performance after 4 cycles of use and regeneration.

A comparative study of immobilizing ammonium molybdophosphate onto cellulose microsphere by radiation post-grafting and hybrid grafting for cesium removal

Ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) exhibits high selectivity towards Cs but it cannot be directly applied in column packing, so it is necessary to prepare AMP-based adsorbents into an available form to improve its practicality. This work provided two AMP immobilized cellulose microspheres (MCC@AMP and MCC-g-AMP) as adsorbents for Cs removal by radiation grafting technique. MCC-g-AMP was prepared by radiation graft polymerization of GMA on microcrystalline cellulose microspheres (MCC) followed by reaction with AMP suspension, and MCC@AMP was synthesized by radiation hybrid grafting of AMP and GMA onto MCC through one step. The different structures and morphologies of two adsorbents were characterized by FTIR and SEM. The adsorption properties of two adsorbents against Cs were investigated and compared in batch and column experiments under different conditions. Both adsorbents were better obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. MCC-g-AMP presented faster adsorption kinetic and more stable structure, whereas MCC@AMP presented more facile synthesis and higher adsorption capacity. MCC@AMP was pH independent in the range of pH 1-12 but MCC-g-AMP was sensitive to pH for Cs removal. The saturated column adsorption capacities of MCC@AMP and MCC-g-AMP were 5.4 g-Cs/L-ad and 0.75 g-Cs/L-ad in column adsorption experiments at SV 10 h-1. Both adsorbents exhibited very high radiation stability and can maintain an adsorption capacity of >85% even after 1000 kGy γ-irradiation. On the basis, two AMP-loaded adsorbents possessed promising application in removal of Cs from actual contaminated groundwater. These findings provided two efficient adsorbents for treatment of Cs in radioactive waste disposal.

Bio-Inspired Preparation of Clay-Hexacyanoferrate Composite Hydrogels as Super Adsorbents for Cs. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2020;12:33173-33185. [PMID: 32531151 DOI: 10.1021/acsami.0c06598]

A facile and low-cost fabrication route, inspired by the adhesive proteins secreted by mussels, has been developed to prepare a clay-based composite hydrogel (DHG(Cu)) containing hexacyanoferrate (HCF) nanoparticles for the selective removal of Cs⁺ from contaminated water. Initially, montmorillonite was exfoliated prior to coating with a thin layer of polydopamine (PDOPA) via the self-polymerization of dopamine. Mixing the composite (D-clay) with the HCF precursor, followed by the addition of copper ions, led to the self-assembly of the polymer-coated exfoliated clay nanosheets into a three-dimensional network and in situ growth of KCuHCF nanoparticles embedded within the gel structure. Analytical characterization verified the fabrication route and KCuHCF immobilization by a copper-ligand complexation. Rheology testing revealed the composite hydrogel to be elastic under low strain and exhibited reversible, self-healing behavior following high strain deformation, providing a good retention of KCuHCF nanoparticles in the membrane. The adsorbent DHG(Cu) showed a superior Cs⁺ adsorption capacity (∼173 mg/g), with the performance maintained over a wide pH range, and an excellent selectivity for Cs⁺ when dispersed in seawater at low concentrations of 0.2 ppm. On the basis of its excellent mechanico-chemical properties, the fabricated hydrogel was tested as a membrane in column filtration, showing excellent removal of Cs⁺ from Milli-Q water and seawater, with the performance only limited by the fluid residence time. For comparison, the study also considered other composite hydrogels, which were fabricated as intermediates of DHG(Cu) or fabricated with Fe³⁺ as the cross-linker and reactant for HCF nanoparticle synthesis.

Nickel-metal-organic framework nanobelt based composite membranes for efficient Sr2+ removal from aqueous solution

The sorption removal of radionuclides Sr²⁺ using a freestanding functional membrane is an interesting and significant research area in the remediation of radioactive wastes. Herein, a novel self-assembled membrane consisting of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanobelts and graphene oxides (GOs) are synthesized through a simple and facile filtration method. The membrane possesses a unique interwove morphology as evidenced from SEM images. Batch experiments suggest that the GO/Ni-MOF composite membrane could remove Sr²⁺ ions from aqueous solutions and the Sr²⁺ adsorption capacity and efficiency of the GO/Ni-MOF composite membrane is relevant to the MOF content in the composite. Thus, the dominant interaction mechanism was interface or surface complexation, electrostatic interaction as well as ion substitution. The maximum effective sorption of Sr²⁺ over GO/Ni-MOF membrane is 32.99% with 2 mg composite membrane containing a high content of Ni-MOF at 299 K in 100 mg/L Sr²⁺ aqueous solution. The FT-IR and XPS results suggest that the synergistic effect between GO and Ni-MOF is determinant in the sorption Sr²⁺ process. The GO/Ni-MOF composite membrane is demonstrated to have the advantages of efficient removal of Sr²⁺, low cost and simple synthesis route, which is promising in the elimination of radionuclide contamination.

Field technical applicability and cost analysis for microwave based regenerating permeable reactive barriers (MW-PRBs) operating in Cs-contaminated groundwater treatment

The present study tests the potentiality of a novel microwave based regenerating permeable reactive barrier (MW-PRB) system as combined treatment for Cs-contaminated groundwater. Granular activated carbon (GAC) was selected as adsorptive materials in batch and column MW-regeneration experiments. Experimental and modeling data were elaborated for technical and economic considerations in order to assess the MW-PRB feasibility jointly with essential information regarding its real field applicability. Batch experiments investigated the effects of 10 adsorption-MW regeneration cycles under different MW irradiation conditions (applied electric field = 200-460 V m^-1; irradiation times = 1-15 min) by assessing GAC variation properties in term of regeneration yield (δ), specific area and weight loss (WL) variation. Column tests were carried using a dedicated setup essentially including a column filled with GAC implanted in a MW oven cavity (MW electric field of 385 V m^-1, irradiation times 5-15 min). Lab-scale results shown the ability of MW in Cs removal from GAC as demonstrated by regeneration yield (δ = 79-110%) and WL (6.78% for 10 cycles) values. This was confirmed in dynamic conditions by data from MW-column tests highlighting the highest Cs removal of ~80% when the maximum regeneration time was applied. Residual Cs concentration in breakthrough curves fitted well with the proposed Yoon and Nelson model (R² = ~0.97). Results from techno-economic analysis revealed the MW-PRB viability and its advantages also in comparison with conventional PRB systems, demonstrating the concept of combined MW-PRB treatment. Saved cost obtained demonstrated in fact the potential cost effectiveness of MW-PRB system and, consequently, the implementation of novel approach is encouraged. Calculated PRB longevity vs groundwater velocity curves are useful in order to predict long-term PRB performance and the response of the remediation activities, as well as for guiding the design and the scaling-up of MW-PRB treatment.

Potential of siltstone and its composites with biochar and magnetite nanoparticles for the removal of cadmium from contaminated aqueous solutions: Batch and column scale studies

The present study is the first attempt to evaluate the pilot and batch scale adsorption potential of siltstone (SS) and its nanocomposites with biochar (EDB/SS), magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs/SS) and MNPs/EDB/SS for Cd removal from contaminated water. The SS, EDB/SS, MNPs/SS and MNPs/EDB/SS were characterized with FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, TGA and point of zero charge (PZC). The effects of adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial Cd concentration, pH and presence of competing ions were evaluated on the Cd removal and its adsorption. The order for Cd removal was: MNPs/EDB/SS > MNPs/SS > EDB/SS > SS (95.86-99.72% > 93.10-98.5% > 89.66.98-98.40% > 74.90-90%). Column scale experiments yielded maximum retention (95%) of Cd even after 2 h of injection at 100 mg Cd/L. The exhausted SS, EDB/SS, MNPs/SS and MNPs/EDB/SS were reused without losing significant adsorption potential. Similarly, maximum Cd adsorption (117.38 mg/g) was obtained with MNPs/EDB/SS at dose 1.0 g/L. The results revealed that coexisting cations reduced the Cd removal due to competition with Cd ions. The experimental results were better explained with Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo 2nd order kinetic models. The results revealed that SS and its composites can be used efficiently for the removal of Cd from contaminated water.

Rapid and efficient removal of acetochlor from environmental water using Cr-MIL-101 sorbent modified with 3, 5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl isocyanate

The excessive use of acetochlor (ACT), a commonly used herbicide with latent endocrine disrupting functions, causes surface water pollution. The efficient removal of ACT from contaminated water supplies is of paramount importance. In the current work, 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl isocyanate (BTP) was successfully anchored onto Cr-MIL-101 walls via covalent incorporation to afford Cr-MIL-101-BTP as a novel adsorbent for the high-efficiency removal of ACT in aqueous solutions. The kinetic adsorption process, adsorption isotherms, adsorbent regeneration, and key parameters, such as adsorbent dosage, pH value, and ionic strength, for the adsorption of ACT were studied. Results showed that a pseudo-second-order rate equation effectively describes the adsorption kinetics. The Langmuir model exhibited a better fit to adsorption isotherm than the Freundlich model. Given the π-π stacking and hydrogen bond interaction, the adsorption capacity in Cr-MIL-101-BTP approached a maximum of 312.5 mg/g for ACT, which was considerably higher than the adsorption capacities of many other reported adsorbents. The excellent adsorption characteristics of Cr-MIL-101-BTP toward ACT were preserved in a wide pH range and high concentration of background electrolytes. In addition, the result showed that partition coefficient (PC) of Cr-MIL-101-BTP was 356.14 mg/g/μM at 5 mg/L of ACT concentration, which was found as the outperformer in all tested subjects. The ACT adsorption capacity of Cr-MIL-101-BTP at the breakthrough point was greatly influenced by initial concentration, and could be described by the Thomas model. Regeneration experiments indicated that the Cr-MIL-101-BTP was recycled at least six times without significant loss of adsorption capacity. Moreover, Cr-MIL-101-BTP did not show cytotoxic activity against the tested HepG2 cell lines and did not pose serious risks to Daphnia carinata survival (48 h LC₅₀ = 446.6 μg/mL). These results prefigured the promising potential of Cr-MIL-101-BTP as a novel adsorbent for the efficient removal of ACT from aqueous solutions.

Prussian blue-embedded carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibril membranes for removing radioactive cesium from aqueous solution

In this study, we synthesized a Prussian blue (PB)-embedded macroporous carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibril (CMCNF) membrane for facile cesium (Cs) removal. The PB was formed in situ at Fe³⁺ sites on a CMCNF framework cross-linked using FeCl₃ as a cross-linking agent. Cubic PB particles of size 5-20 nm were observed on the macroporous CMCNF membrane surface. The PB-CMCNF membrane showed 2.5-fold greater Cs adsorption capacity (130 mg/g_PB-CMCNF) than commercial PB nanoparticles, even though the PB loading of the PB-CMCNF membrane was less than 100 mg/g_PB-CMCNF. The macroporous structure of the CMCNF membrane led to improved diffusion in the solution, thereby increasing the Cs adsorption capacity. The Cs adsorption behavior was systematically investigated in different solution chemistry. Finally, ¹³⁷Cs removal using a semicontinuous adsorption module was demonstrated in real seawater. The results showed that the PB-CMCNF membrane is a highly effective, practical material for the removal of ¹³⁷Cs from aqueous environments.

Enhanced immobilization of Prussian blue through hydrogel formation by polymerization of acrylic acid for radioactive cesium adsorption

In this study, a hydrogel impregnated with powder activated carbon (PAC), MAA-PAC, was synthesized through the polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and PB was immobilized using the carboxyl group of AA. In this process, an adsorbent with an enhancement of PB content and stability of immobilization was developed through the additional supply of Fe3+ ions by the layer by layer (LBL) assembly. XRD, FT-IR, SEM (EDS), TEM (EDS, mapping), and TG analyzes of the LBL and non-LBL groups were performed to confirm the change of PB content in the adsorbent as the LBL assembly was applied. The stability of PB immobilization was confirmed during the washing process after the synthesis of the adsorbent. When the LBL assembly process was applied as a PB immobilization strategy, the PB content in the adsorbent was improved and PB leakage was not observed during the washing process. The maximum adsorption (qm) for cesium in the MAA-PAC-PB LBL group that showed high PB content was 40.03 mg/g, and the adsorption isotherm was more suitable for the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model. The LBL group showed a high removal efficiency of 99.81% and a high DF value (525.88) for radioactive cesium (120 Bq/g). These results demonstrate the potential efficiency of the MAA-PAC-PB LBL group for the decontamination of radioactive cesium-contaminated water systems. Furthermore, it was verified that the LBL group of MAA-PAC-PB could be used as an adsorbent without an additional design of the existing water treatment facility. This can an economical decontamination method for removing radioactive cesium.

Activated Carbon/Transition Metal (Ni, In, Cu) Hexacyanoferrate Nanocomposites for Cesium Adsorption

Transition metal hexacyanoferrate/microporous activated carbon composites were obtained using a simple successive impregnation approach. The effect of metal type (nickel, indium, or copper), and the carbon oxidation on the composite characteristics (porosity, metal structure, and particle size), as well as on the removal efficiency of cesium from aqueous solution was investigated. Successful formation of the desired metal hexacyanoferrate phase was achieved and the size of the metallic nanoparticles and their dispersion in the carbon network was found to depend on the metal type, with the indium and nickel-based materials exhibiting the smallest particle size distribution (< 10 nm). Adsorption tests performed under batch conditions demonstrate that the copper hexacyanoferrate/activated carbon composite present the highest cesium removal capacity from aqueous solution (74.7 mg·g⁻¹) among the three studied metal-based nanocomposites. The carbon oxidation treatment leads to the increase in the number of functional groups to the detriment of the porosity but allows for an improvement in the Cs adsorption capacity. This indicates that the Cs adsorption process is governed by the carbon surface chemistry and not its porosity. Moreover, combining oxidized carbon support with copper hexacyanoferrate induces the highest cesium adsorption capacity (101.5 mg·g⁻¹). This could be related to synergistic effects through two absorption mechanisms, i.e., a cation exchange mechanism of Cs with the metallic hexacyanoferrate phase and Cs adsorption via carbon oxygen surface groups, as demonstrated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses.
