Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) serves as a widely used platform compound and has received significant attention as a raw material for synthesis of biodegradable polylactic acid. Currently, LA is mainly produced through microbial fermentation, but its high costs undermine its competitive advantage against other materials, necessitating the development of novel production routes. Methanol bioconversion represents an emerging low-carbon circular economy, where LA could become an outstanding representative product. This study successfully established an efficient methanol-based LA synthesis route in Pichia pastoris. Through systematic metabolic engineering strategies, including screening lactate dehydrogenase, modification of cofactor preference, blocking LA consumption pathway, and mitochondrial LA synthesis compartmentalization, 4.2 g/L L-LA was produced in fed-batch fermentation by using methanol as the sole carbon source. Through multi-dimensional and spatial engineering of enzyme, a cell factory was developed for efficient synthesis of L-LA, highlights the significant potential of the low-carbon synthesis route for L-LA via methanol bioconversion.

Abstract
Maize comes in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, red, blue, and purple, which is due to the presence of phytochemicals such as carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, phytosterols, and some hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives. In Mexico, maize is primarily grown for human consumption; however, maize residues comprise 51-58% of the total maize plant weight (stalks, leaves, ears, and husks) and are mainly used as livestock feed. These residues contain numerous bioactive compounds that interest the industry for their potential health benefits in preventing or treating degenerative diseases. This review explores the current knowledge and highlights key aspects related to the extraction methods and different techniques for identifying the bioactive compounds found in maize by-products.

Abstract
Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was utilized for efficiently producing optically pure D-(-)-lactate by Klebsiella oxytoca KIS004-91T strain. Cellulase (15 U/g NaOH-treated SCB) sufficiently liberated high sugars with saccharifications of 79.8 % cellulose and 52.5 % hemicellulose. For separated hydrolysis and fermentation, D-(-)-lactate was produced at 53.5 ± 2.1 g/L (0.98 ± 0.01 g/g sugar utilized or 0.71 ± 0.01 g/g total sugars) while D-(-)-lactate at 47.2 ± 1.8 g/L (0.78 ± 0.03 g/g sugar used or 0.69 ± 0.01 g/g total sugars) was obtained under simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). D-(-)-lactate at 99.9 ± 0.9 g/L (0.97 ± 0.01 g/g sugar utilized or 0.78 ± 0.01 g/g total sugars) was improved via fed-batch SSF. Based on mass balance, raw SCB of 7 kg is required to produce 1 kg D-(-)-lactate. Unlike others, D-(-)-lactate production was performed in low-cost salt medium without requirements of rich nutrients. Costs regarding medium, purification, and waste disposal may be reduced. This unlocks economic capability of SCB bioconversion or agricultural and agro-industrial wastes into high valuable D-(-)-lactate.

Abstract
Straw biorefinery offers economical and sustainable production of chemicals. The merits of cell immobilization technology have become the key technology to meet D-lactic acid production from non- detoxified corn stover. In this paper, Low acyl gellan gum (LA-GAGR) was employed first time for Lactobacillus bulgaricus T15 immobilization and applied in D-lactic acid (D-LA) production from non-detoxified corn stover hydrolysate. Compared with the conventional calcium alginate (E404), LA-GAGR has a hencky stress of 82.09 kPa and excellent tolerance to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), ferulic acid (FA), and vanillin. These features make LA-GAGR immobilized T15 work for 50 days via cell-recycle fermentation with D-LA yield of 2.77 ± 0.27 g/L h, while E404 immobilized T15 can only work for 30 days. The production of D-LA from non-detoxified corn stover hydrolysate with LA-GAGR immobilized T15 was also higher than that of free T15 fermentation and E404 immobilized T15 fermentation. In conclusion, LA-GAGR is an excellent cell immobilization material with great potential for industrial application in straw biorefinery industry.

Abstract
Lignin of high purity and structural integrity was isolated from the enzymatic residue of corn stover. Degradation of the lignin by laccase, lignin peroxidase, and manganese peroxidase was investigated. Structural changes in the lignin after degradation were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the enzymatic products were systematically analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The highest percentage of lignin degradation was obtained with a mixture of three enzymes (25.79%): laccase (Lac), the starting enzyme of the mixed enzyme reaction, worked with lignin peroxidase (LiP), and manganese peroxidase (MnP) to further degrade lignin. This degradation destroyed the macromolecular structure of lignin, broke its key chemical bonds, and opened benzene rings, thus producing more acidic compounds. This study elucidated the concept of degrading lignin from corn stover using the Lac, LiP and MnP enzymes synergistically, thus providing a theoretical basis for the biodegradation of lignin.

Abstract
Growing demand for agricultural production means a higher quantity of residues produced. The reuse and recycling of agro-industrial wastes reduce worldwide greenhouse emissions. New opportunities are derived from this kind of residuals in the biotechnological field generating valuable products in growing sectors such as transportation, bioenergy, food, and feedstock. The use of natural macromolecules towards biocatalysts offers numerous advantages over free enzymes and friendliness with the environment. Enzyme immobilization improves enzyme properties (stability and reusability), and three types of supports are discussed: inorganic, organic, and hybrid. Several examples of agro-industrial wastes such as coconut wastes, rice husks, corn residues and brewers spent grains (BSG), their properties and potential as supports for enzyme immobilization are described in this work. Before the immobilization, biological and non-biological pretreatments could be performed to enhance the waste potential as a carrier. Additionally, immobilization methods such as covalent binding, adsorption, cross-linking and entrapment are compared to provide high efficiency. Enzymes and biocatalysts for industrial applications offer advantages over traditional chemical processes with respect to sustainability and process efficiency in food, energy, and bioremediation fields. The wastes reviewed in this work demonstrated a high affinity for lipases and laccases and might be used in biodiesel production and textile wastewater treatment, among other applications.

Abstract
Lactate, a hydroxycarboxylic acid commercially produced by microbial fermentation, is widely applied in diverse industrial fields. Lactate exists in two stereoisomeric forms (d-lactate and l-lactate). d-Lactate and l-lactate are often simultaneously present in many biological samples. Therefore, a biosensor able to detect both d- and l-lactate is required but previously unavailable. Herein, an allosteric transcription factor LldR from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, which responds to both d-lactate and l-lactate, was combined with amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay technology to develop a d,l-lactate biosensor. The proposed biosensor was optimized by mutation of DNA sequence in binding site of LldR. The optimized biosensor BLac-6 can accurately detect the concentration of lactate independent on ratio of the two isomers in pending test samples. The biosensor was also tentatively used in quantitative analysis of d-lactate, l-lactate, or d,l-lactate in fermentation samples produced by three recombinant strains of Klebsiella oxytoca. With its desirable properties, the biosensor BLac-6 may be a potential choice for monitoring the concentration of lactate during industrial fermentation.

Abstract
Background d-Lactic acid played an important role in the establishment of PLA as a substitute for petrochemical plastics. But, so far, the d-lactic acid production was limited in only pilot scale, which was definitely unable to meet the fast growing market demand. To achieve industrial scale d-lactic acid production, the cost-associated problems such as high-cost feedstock, expensive nutrient sources and fermentation technology need to be resolved to establish an economical fermentation process. Results In the present study, the combined effect of B vitamin supplementation and membrane integrated continuous fermentation on d-lactic acid production from agricultural lignocellulosic biomass by Lactobacillus delbrueckii was investigated. The results indicated the specific addition of vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B5 (VB1, VB2, VB3 and VB5) could reduce the yeast extract (YE) addition from 10 to 3 g/l without obvious influence on fermentation efficiency. By employing cell recycling system in 350 h continuous fermentation with B vitamin supplementation, YE addition was further reduced to 0.5 g/l, which resulted in nutrient source cost reduction of 86%. A maximum d-lactate productivity of 18.56 g/l/h and optical purity of 99.5% were achieved and higher than most recent reports. Conclusion These findings suggested the novel fermentation strategy proposed could effectively reduce the production cost and improve fermentation efficiency, thus exhibiting great potential in promoting industrial scale d-lactic acid production from lignocellulosic biomass. Abstract
Despite a growing preference for second-generation (2G) ethanol in industries, its application is severely restricted owing to a major obstacle of developing a suitable yeast strain for fermentation using feedstock biomasses. In this study, a yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae A31Z, for 2G bioethanol production was developed from an industrial strain, Angel, using metabolic engineering by the incorporation of gene clusters involved in the xylose metabolism combined with adaptive evolution for evolving its anti-inhibitory properties. This strain outcompeted its ancestors in xylose utilization and subsequent ethanol production and manifested higher tolerance against common inhibitors from lignocellulosic hydrolysates, and also it lowered the production of glycerol by-product. Furthermore, A31Z outperformed in ethanol production using industrial hydrolysate from dried distillers grains with solubles and whole corn. Overall, this study provided a promising path for improving 2G bioethanol production in industries using S. cerevisiae.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the use of isobutanol as organic solvent for the efficient delignification and fractionation of beechwood through the OxiOrganosolv process in the absence of any catalyst. The results demonstrate that cellulose-rich solid pulp produced after pretreatment is a source of fermentable sugars that can be easily hydrolyzed and serve as a carbon source in microbial fermentations for the production of omega-3 fatty acids and D-lactic acid. The C5 sugars are recovered in the aqueous liquid fractions and comprise a fraction rich in xylo-oligosaccharides with prebiotic potential. The maximum production of optically pure D-lactic from Lactobacillus delbrueckii sp. bulgaricus reached 51.6 g/L (0.57 g/gbiomass), following a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation strategy. Crypthecodenium cohnii accumulated up to 52.1 wt% lipids with a DHA content of 54.1 %, while up to 43.3 % hemicellulose recovery in form of oligosaccharides was achieved in the liquid fraction.

Abstract
This research aims to study the wet torrefaction (WT) and saccharification of sorghum distillery residue (SDR) towards hydrochar and bioethanol production. The experiments are designed by Box-Behnken design from response surface methodology where the operating conditions include sulfuric acid concentration (0, 0.01, and 0.02 M), amyloglucosidase concentration (36, 51, and 66 IU), and saccharification time (120, 180, and 240 min). Compared to conventional dry torrefaction, the hydrochar yield is between 13.24 and 14.73%, which is much lower than dry torrefaction biochar (yield >50%). The calorific value of the raw SDR is 17.15 MJ/kg, which is significantly enhanced to 22.36-23.37 MJ/kg after WT. When the sulfuric acid concentration increases from 0 to 0.02 M, the glucose concentration in the product increases from 5.59 g/L to 13.05 g/L. The prediction of analysis of variance suggests that the best combination to maximum glucose production is 0.02 M H2SO4, 66 IU enzyme concentration, and 120 min saccharification time, and the glucose concentration is 30.85 g/L. The maximum bioethanol concentration of 19.21 g/L is obtained, which is higher than those from wheat straw (18.1 g/L) and sweet sorghum residue (16.2 g/L). A large amount of SDR is generated in the kaoliang liquor production process, which may cause environmental problems if it is not appropriately treated. This study fulfills SDR valorization for hydrochar and bioenergy to lower environmental pollution and even achieve a circular economy.

Influence of Nitrogen Sources on D-Lactic Acid Biosynthesis by Sporolactobacillus laevolacticus DSM 442 Strain. FERMENTATION 2021. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of replacing an expensive yeast extract contained in the fermentation medium for D-lactic acid (D-LA, R-lactic acid) biosynthesis with an alternative nitrogen source. The screening studies were conducted under stationary conditions and showed that pea seed hydrolysate was the most beneficial substrate in the process of D-LA biosynthesis by the strain Sporolactobacillus laevolacticus DSM 442 among the used inorganic and organic nitrogen sources, waste materials, food and agricultural products. After 96 h, 75.5 g/L D-LA was obtained in batch cultures in a medium containing pea seed hydrolysate, with an average productivity of 0.79 g/L/h, yield of 75.5%, and optical purity of 99.4%. In batch cultures fed once, in a medium with an analogous composition, 122.6 g/L D-LA was obtained after 120 h, and the average yield, productivity and optical purity were 87.6%, 1.021 g/L/h, and 99.6%, respectively. Moreover, the amount of D-LA obtained in the fermentation medium enriched with the above-mentioned cheap agricultural product was similar to the amounts obtained in the medium containing yeast extract in both stationary and bioreactor cultures. Our research shows that hydrolyzed pea seeds, which belong to the legume family, may be a promising nitrogen source for the production of D-LA on an industrial scale.

Abstract
Lignocellulose is the primary component of many biomasses, including corn straw. Herein, lignocellulose in corn straw was disassembled into the individual polymers, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin via a mild and facile method. Subsequently, three porous carbon materials were prepared by carbonization and chemical activation of cellulose (PCCC), hemicellulose (PCHC), and lignin (PCLC). The three materials showed higher specific surface areas (2565.7, 2996.1, and 2590.3 m2 g-1) and higher porosities (1.4261, 1.5876, and 1.2406 cm3 g-1) than that of PCCS, a porous carbon material derived from raw corn straw (1993 m2 g-1 and 1.19 cm3 g-1). Of note, PCCC and PCHC exhibited higher adsorption (1025.5 and 950.1 mg g-1) of brilliant green (BG), than PCCS (876.7 mg g-1). Besides, the BG adsorption capacities of the designed materials were higher than that of most adsorbents, and 2-2.5 times higher than that of graphite oxide (416.7 mg g-1). These study results indicate that the disassembly of lignocellulosic biomass into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin is an effective strategy for preparing various porous carbon materials with enhanced performances.

Abstract
Food waste and byproducts are generated along the entire food processing and storage chain. The large amount of waste deriving from the whole process represents not only a great economic loss but also an important ethical and environmental issue in terms of failure to recycle potentially reusable materials. New, clear strategies are needed to limit the amount of waste produced and, at the same time, promote its enhancement for further conversion and application to different industrial fields. This review gives an overview of the biological approaches used so far to exploit agri-food wastes and byproducts. The application of solid-state fermentation by different microorganisms (fungi, yeasts, bacteria) to produce several value-added products was analyzed, focusing on the exploitation of lactic acid bacteria as workhorses for the production of flavoring compounds.

Abstract
The reported haploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain F106 can utilize xylose for ethanol production. After a series of XR and/or XDH mutations were introduced into F106, the XR-K270R mutant was found to outperform others. The corresponding haploid, diploid, and triploid strains were then constructed and their fermentation performance was compared. Strains F106-KR and the diploid produced an ethanol yield of 0.45 and 0.48 g/g total sugars, respectively, in simulated corn hydrolysates within 36 h. Using non-detoxicated corncob hydrolysate as the substrate, the ethanol yield with the triploid was approximately sevenfold than that of the diploid at 40°C. After a comprehensive evaluation of growth on corn stover hydrolysates pretreated with diluted acid or alkali and different substrate concentrations, ethanol yields of the triploid strain were consistently higher than those of the diploid using acid-pretreatment. These results demonstrate that the yeast chromosomal copy number is positively correlated with increased ethanol production under our experimental conditions.

Abstract
The difficulties in the process of cellulose cascade conversion based on immobilization technology lies in the recycling enzymes from rich solid-containing straw hydrolysate and the incompatibility of conventional immobilization with this process. In this study, three types of enzyme (cellulase, glucose oxidase and catalase) were successfully immobilized on a reversible soluble Eudragit L-100. Through the determination of the preparation conditions, enzymatic properties and catalytic conditions, the co-immobilized enzyme was applied to the catalytic reaction of one-pot conversion of corn straw to gluconic acid. The yield of gluconic acid achieved 0.28 mg/mg, conversion rate of cellulose in corn straw to gluconic acid reached 61.41%. The recovery of co-immobilized enzyme from solid substrate was achieved by using reversible and soluble characteristics of the carrier. After 6 times of recycling, the activity of co-immobilized enzyme was maintained at 52.38%, confirming the feasibility of multi-enzyme immobilization strategy using reversible soluble carrier in cascade reactions.

Abstract
Lignocellulose is a promising raw material for the production of second-generation biofuels. In this study, the effects of acid-catalyzed liquid hot water (LHW) on pretreatment of corn stover (CS) for subsequent hydrolysis and conversion to ethanol were studied. The effects of reaction temperature, acid concentration, and residence time on glucose yield were evaluated using a response surface methodology. The optimal condition was 162.4 °C for 29.5 min with 0.45% v/v of sulfuric acid, leading to the maximum glucose yield of 91.05% from enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose-enriched fraction. Conversion of the solid fraction to ethanol by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation resulted in a theoretical ethanol yield of 93.91% based on digestible glucose. Scanning electron microscopy revealed disruption on the microstructure of the pretreated CS. Increases of crystallinity index and surface area of the pretreated biomass were observed along with alteration in the functional group profiles, as demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This work provides an insight into the effects of LHW on the enzymatic susceptibility and modification of the physicochemical properties of CS for further application on bioethanol production in biorefinery.

Abstract
Lactic acid is an organic compound produced via fermentation by different microorganisms that are able to use different carbohydrate sources. Lactic acid bacteria are the main bacteria used to produce lactic acid and among these, Lactobacillus spp. have been showing interesting fermentation capacities. The use of Bacillus spp. revealed good possibilities to reduce the fermentative costs. Interestingly, lactic acid high productivity was achieved by Corynebacterium glutamicum and E. coli, mainly after engineering genetic modification. Fungi, like Rhizopus spp. can metabolize different renewable carbon resources, with advantageously amylolytic properties to produce lactic acid. Additionally, yeasts can tolerate environmental restrictions (for example acidic conditions), being the wild-type low lactic acid producers that have been improved by genetic manipulation. Microalgae and cyanobacteria, as photosynthetic microorganisms can be an alternative lactic acid producer without carbohydrate feed costs. For lactic acid production, it is necessary to have substrates in the fermentation medium. Different carbohydrate sources can be used, from plant waste as molasses, starchy, lignocellulosic materials as agricultural and forestry residues. Dairy waste also can be used by the addition of supplementary components with a nitrogen source.

Abstract
Because of the abundance and renewability of lignocellulosic biomass, lignocellulose-derived biofuels and chemicals are promising alternatives to fossil resources. In this study, we developed a strategy for pretreating lignocellulose (corn stover) using a sodium hydroxide-urea solution (SUs) and evaluated changes in the efficiency and structure. The results showed that treatment with 6% NaOH/12% urea at 80 °C for 20 min gave a glucose yield of 0.54 g/g corn stover. Recycling of the NaOH/urea was also explored, and the average glucose yield over four pretreatment cycles was 0.44 g/g corn stover. The structural characteristics of corn stover were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Compared with untreated corn stover, NaOH/urea-pretreated corn stover had more micropores, mesopores, and macropores, higher crystallinity, and a higher cellulose content. This pretreatment process is economical and efficient and has good application prospects for lignocellulose biorefinery.

Abstract
The degradation of alkali lignin was studied using three types of pure enzyme, Lac, LiP, and MnP, using alkali lignin as substrate. The alkali lignin removal rate was found to be 28.98% when Lac, LiP, and MnP were cultured together for alkali lignin degradation. Changes in the structure and composition before and after degradation were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The degradation product pathways were analyzed. The enzyme was proven to degrade alkali lignin, resulting in destruction of the alkali lignin structure, ring-opening of the macromolecular benzene ring structure and groups in alkali lignin, and chemical bond cleavage. This study explains the principle of alkali lignin enzymatic hydrolysis and provides a theoretical basis for the biodegradation of lignin.

Abstract
Membrane-assisted β-poly(L-malic acid) (PMLA) production from bagasse hydrolysates was developed. For the first time, it was found that mixing the acid and enzyme hydrolysates was unfavorable for PMLA production because too high hexose: pentose ratio and glucose concentration in the mixed sugar could inhibit the assimilation of pentose. 120 g/L sugar concentrations in the acid hydrolysate was suitable for PMLA production with 23.2 g/L PMLA and 34.7 g/L biomass. Moreover, an integrated membrane process consisting of ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes could concentrate sugars and adjust acetic acid concentration prior to fermentation of lignocellulosic sugars. Meanwhile, it was found that 1.46 g/L acetic acid was preferred for PMLA production from enzyme hydrolysate or sole glucose which respectively increased PMLA production and cell growth by 25.4% and 5.9% from sole glucose, while it showed no significant enhancement in PMLA production with a higher cell growth and productivity from acid hydrolysate.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have a long history in industrial processes as food starters and biocontrol agents, and also as producers of high-value compounds. Lactic acid, their main product, is among the most requested chemicals because of its multiple applications, including the synthesis of biodegradable plastic polymers. Moreover, LAB are attractive candidates for the production of ethanol, polyhydroalkanoates, sweeteners and exopolysaccharides. LAB generally have complex nutritional requirements. Furthermore, they cannot directly ferment inexpensive feedstocks such as lignocellulose. This significantly increases the cost of LAB fermentation and hinders its application in the production of high volumes of low-cost chemicals. Different strategies have been explored to extend LAB fermentation to lignocellulosic biomass. Fermentation of lignocellulose hydrolysates by LAB has been frequently reported and is the most mature technology. However, current economic constraints of this strategy have driven research for alternative approaches. Co-cultivation of LAB with native cellulolytic microorganisms may reduce the high cost of exogenous cellulase supplementation. Special attention is given in this review to the construction of recombinant cellulolytic LAB by metabolic engineering, which may generate strains able to directly ferment plant biomass. The state of the art of these strategies is illustrated along with perspectives of their applications to industrial second generation biorefinery processes.

Abstract
Lactic acid is an important industrial product and the production from inexpensive and renewable lignocellulose can reduce the cost and environmental pollution. In this study, a Kluyveromyces marxianus strain which produced lactic acid efficiently from corncob was constructed. Firstly, two of six different lactate dehydrogenases, which from Plasmodium falciparum and Bacillus subtilis, respectively, were proved to be effective for l-lactic acid production. Then, five single genetic modifications were conducted. The overexpression of Saccharomyces cerevisiae proton-coupled monocarboxylate transporter, K. marxianus 6-phosphofructokinase, or disruption of K. marxianus putative d-lactate dehydrogenase enhanced the l-lactic acid accumulation. Finally, the strain YKX071, obtained via combination of above effective genetic engineering, produced 103.00 g/L l-lactic acid at 42 °C with optical purity of 99.5% from corncob residue via simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation. This study first developed an effective platform for high optical purity l-lactic acid production from lignocellulose using yeast with inexpensive nitrogen sources.

Abstract
The production of biodegradable polymers as alternatives to petroleum-based plastics has gained significant attention in the past years. To this end, polylactic acid (PLA) constitutes a promising alternative, finding various applications from food packaging to pharmaceuticals. Recent studies have shown that d-lactic acid plays a vital role in the production of heat-resistant PLA. At the same time, the utilization of renewable resources is imperative in order to decrease the production cost. This review aims to provide a synopsis of the current state of the art regarding d-lactic acid production via fermentation, focusing on the exploitation of waste and byproduct streams. An overview of potential downstream separation schemes is also given. Additionally, three case studies are presented and discussed, reporting the obtained results utilizing acid whey, coffee mucilage and hydrolysate from rice husks as alternative feedstocks for d-lactic acid production.

Abstract
The biotransformation of agricultural waste into valuable chemicals represents a promising approach in the field of biorefining. Herein, a general but highly efficient and robust process is reported for the production of organic acid from kimchi cabbage waste using lactic acid bacteria. The organic acid produced was tested for efficacy as a biological control agent. Lactobacillus sakei WiKim31 and L. curvatus WiKim38 could efficiently produce organic acids including lactic acid (12.1 and 12.7 g/L), fumaric acid (7.4 and 7.1 g/L), and acetic acid (4.5 and 4.6 g/L) from kimchi cabbage waste (3% substrate loading, w/v) by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation processes for 48 h, and the culture filtrate induced complete mortality of J2s Meloidogyne incognita at 2.5% concentration. These results suggested that lactic acid bacteria L. sakei WiKim31 and L. curvatus WiKim38 can efficiently produce organic acids, and the culture filtrate can be applied as a microbial nematicide.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of utilizing different lignocellulosic hydrolysates with various hexose versus pentose (H:P) ratios to produce lactic acid (LA) from Bacillus coagulans IPE22 by fermentations with single and mixed sugar. In single sugar utilization, glucose tended to promote LA production, and xylose preferred to enhance cell growth. In mixed sugar utilization, glucose and pentose were consumed simultaneously when glucose concentration was lower than 20 g/L, and almost the same concentration of LA (50 g/L) was obtained regardless of the differences of H:P values. Finally, LA production from corn cob hydrolysates (CCH) contained 60 g/L mixed sugar verified the mechanisms found in the fermentations with simulated sugar mixture. Comparing with single glucose utilization, CCH utilization was faster and the yield of LA was not significantly affected. Therefore, the great potential of producing LA with lignocellulosic materials by B. coagulans was proved.
