Abstract
Staggering amounts of food waste are produced in Australia, and this review provides food waste based biorefinery opportunities in moving towards a circular economy in Australia. The current food waste scenario in Australia including an overview of primary food waste sources, government regulation, and current management practices is presented. The major food waste streams include fruit and vegetable (waste from wine grapes, citrus, apple, potato, and tomato), nuts (almond processing waste), seafood (Fish waste), dairy whey, sugarcane bagasse, and household and businesses. The composition of these waste streams indicated their potential for use in biorefineries to produce value-added products via various pathways combining direct extraction and biological and thermochemical conversion. Finally, the efforts made in Australia to utilize food waste as a resource, as well as the challenges and future directions to promote the development of concrete and commercially viable technologies for food waste biorefinery, are described.

Abstract
Increased urbanization and industrialization accelerated demand for energy, large-scale waste output, and negative environmental consequences. Therefore, the implementation of an effective solid-waste-management (SWM) policy for the handling of food waste is of great importance. The global food waste generation is estimated at about 1.6 gigatons/yr which attributes to an economic revenue of 750 billion USD. It can be converted into high-value enzymes, surfactants, Poly-hydroxybutyrate, biofuels, etc. However, the heterogeneous composition of food with high organic load and varying moisture content makes their transformation into value-added products difficult. This review aims to bring forth the possibilities and repercussions of food waste management. The socio-economic challenges related to SWM are comprehensively discussed particularly in terms of environmental concern. The engineering aspect in the collection, storage, and biotransformation of food waste into useful value-added products such as biofuels, advanced biomaterials, bioactive compounds, and platform chemicals are critically reviewed for efficient food waste management.

Abstract
Rapid urbanization has increased the demand for food, feed, and chemicals that have in turn augmented the use of fossil-based resources and generation of organic waste. Owning to the characteristics like high abundance, renewability, and ease of accessibility, valorization of organic wastes serves as a potential solution for waste management issues. Several industrial wastes, due to their organic and nutrient-rich composition, have been utilized as a resource for the production of value-added products such as biofuels, biopesticides, biohydrogen, enzymes, and bioplastics via microbial fermentation processes. The process consists of pre-treatment of the waste biomass, production of value-added product in reactors and downstream processing for product's recovery. The integration of new comprehensive technologies for organic waste utilization will also stimulate the transition towards a circular economy. Therefore, the feasibility and sustainability of the production of various value-added products from biowastes and byproduct streams will be discussed in the present review.

Abstract
The primary objective of this research is to study ways to increase the potential of energy production from food waste by co-production of bioethanol and biomethane. In the first step, the food waste was hydrolysed with an enzyme at different concentrations. By increasing the concentration of enzyme, the amount of reducing sugar produced increased, reaching a maximum amount of 0.49 g/g food waste. After 120 h of fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, nearly all reducing sugars in the hydrolysate were converted to ethanol, yielding 0.43–0.50 g ethanol/g reducing sugar, or 84.3–99.6% of theoretical yield. The solid residue from fermentation was subsequently subjected to anaerobic digestion, allowing the production of biomethane, which reached a maximum yield of 264.53 ± 2.3 mL/g VS. This results in a gross energy output of 9.57 GJ, which is considered a nearly 58% increase in total energy obtained, compared to ethanol production alone. This study shows that food waste is a raw material with high energy production potential that could be further developed into a promising energy source. Not only does this benefit energy production, but it also lowers the cost of food waste disposal, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and is a sustainable energy production approach.

Abstract
With the increase in the cognizance toward the wide and abundant lignocellulosic biomass, a great interest has been garnered toward the production of value-added products from the biomass. Hence, by capitalizing the Casuarina equisetifolia biomass, the current work developed a simultaneous pre-treatment and saccharification (SPS) process using transgenic Trichoderma atroviride. The ability of T. atroviride to produce lignolytic and cellulolytic enzymes was enhanced by optimizing key process parameters. Under the optimized conditions, a maximum of 1245.6 U/kg of cellulase and 1203.36 U/kg of xylanase, 183.2 U/kg of laccase along with 392.36 g/kg of fermentable sugars were obtained. On comparing with acid and alkaline pre-treatment methods, the T. atroviride -mediated SPS process exhibited trace formation of fermentative inhibitors, which resulted in a minimal inhibition of Escherichia coli. Overall, the current work implements the biorefinery concept on Casuarina equisetifolia biomass by advocating circular economy. Implications: Valorization of lignocellulosic waste biomass into value added compound and as biofuel is considered as a promising alternative resource, owing to its availability and low production cost. However, the presence of chemically resistant lignin demands an intensive treatment process, which sometimes leads to the formation of fermentative inhibitors. Casuarina equisetifolia is a deciduous commercial plant, and an average of 125 tonnes/hector of waste is generated annually in India. By considering the demerit of delignification and the wide availability of Casuarina equisetifolia biomass (CB), the current work aimed at the development of a single-pot simultaneous pre-treatment and saccharification (SPS) of CB by transgenic Trichoderma atroviride.

Abstract
Efficient and sustainable biochemical production using low-cost waste assumes considerable industrial and ecological importance. Solid organic wastes (SOWs) are inexpensive, abundantly available resources and their bioconversion to volatile fatty acids, especially acetate, aids in relieving the requirements of pure sugars for microbial biochemical productions in industries. Acetate production from SOW that utilizes the organic carbon of these wastes is used as an efficient solid waste reduction strategy if the environmental factors are optimized. This study screens and optimizes influential factors (physical and chemical) for acetate production by a thermophilic acetogenic consortium using two SOWs-cafeteria wastes and corn stover. The screening experiment revealed significant effects of temperature, bromoethane sulfonate, and shaking on acetate production. Temperature, medium pH, and C:N ratio were further optimized using statistical optimization with response surface methodology. The maximum acetate concentration of 8061 mg L-1 (>200% improvement) was achieved at temperature, pH, and C:N ratio of 60 °C, 6, 25, respectively, and acetate accounted for more than 85% of metabolites. This study also demonstrated the feasibility of using acetate-rich fermentate (obtained from SOWs) as a substrate for the growth of industrially relevant yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, which can convert acetate into higher-value biochemicals.

Abstract
Food and kitchen waste - omnipresent in every corner of the world serve as an excellent source of value added products owing to high organic content. Regardless of existence of various traditional methods of land filling or biogas production used to harness food waste energy, effective conversion of food to valuable resources is often challenged by its heterogenous nature and high moisture content. The current paper tries to lay down the prospects and consequences associated with food waste management. The various social, economical and environmental concerns associated with food waste management especially in terms of green house gas emission and extended rate of leachate generation also has been discussed. The difficulties in proper collection, storage and bioconversion of food waste to valuable by-products are pointed as a big hurdle in proper waste management. Finally, the wide array of value added products developed from food waste after pretreatment are also enlisted to emphasis the prospects of food waste management.

Abstract
Residual solid and liquid streams from the one-pot CRUDE (Conversion of Raw and Untreated Disposal into Ethanol) process were treated with two separate biochemical routes for renewable energy transformation. The solid residual stream was subjected to thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD), which produced 95 ± 7 L methane kg-1 volatile solid with an overall energy efficiency of 12.9 ± 1.7%. A methanotroph, Methyloferula sp., was deployed for oxidation of mixed TAD biogas into methanol. The residual liquid stream from CRUDE process was used in a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) to produce electricity. Material balance calculations confirmed the integration of biochemical routes (i.e. CRUDE, TAD, and MFC) for developing a sustainable approach of energy regeneration. The current work demonstrates the utilization of different residual streams originated after food waste processing to release minimal organic load to the environment.
